Ep 101101: From Hiring Challenges to Growth Opportunities with Sarah Martin and Erin Longmoon

If you’ve ever had significant challenges in your business that keep you from growing, you’ll want to listen in for a good dose of inspiration! Dr. Sabrina and her co-host, Mike Bruno, are joined today by their guest, Sarah Martin, who has growth opportunities; yet, faces significant hiring challenges in her business. Also joining the show is a previous guest, Erin Longmoon of Zephyr Recruiting. Together, they will be diving in to generate some ideas for how Sarah can move forward and put a permanent end to her hiring and recruiting challenges. Sarah Martin is the President and co-owner of Cabin Works, a property maintenance and cleaning company located in the rural, mountain town of Granby, Colorado. She and her husband Phill started Cabin Works over 10 years ago with the goal of providing peace of mind to busy and absentee property owners in need of a reliable, professional, and trustworthy property maintenance company. Sarah and her team strive to foster a workplace culture of family involvement and work-life balance at Cabin Works. From company BBQs to family events, such as their annual bus trip to Denver to watch a Colorado Rockies game and participation in the local annual kickball tournament to raise funds for charity, they get excited about involvement in their community and showing appreciation for their team’s hard work. When not working with their team, you can often find Sarah, Phill, and their three young children, Alivia, Mia, and Asher exploring the Colorado mountains on their skis or mountain bikes. Erin Longmoon’s mission in life is to eradicate toxic workplaces. She believes that everyone deserves to love their job and feel like they are contributing to a greater purpose. As the owner of Zephyr Recruiting LLC, she accomplishes this mission by matching great small businesses with their RIGHT FIT™ employees. Erin has more than two decades of experience helping small businesses and has owned five businesses herself. The passion for eradicating toxic workplaces comes from a place a lot of us can resonate with. When Erin was an employee at a company with a toxic workplace, she saw firsthand how the culture impacted everyone on a deep level. The toxic workplace reduced morale and productivity, followed her home, and led good employees to quit. She dreams of changing people’s lives by helping them realize that they are deeply worthy. She also dreams about being the next Stevie Nicks and being friends with the Dalai Lama. Her magic powers are empathy, ability to read people, coming up with new and awesome ideas, and making a perfectly cooked filet mignon. As the owner of Zephyr Recruiting, she oversees an amazing work-at-home team that shares her passion for supporting great places to work. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Sarah details the various reasons she is experiencing her hiring challenges, which impact her ability to experience growth. Social media tips are offered to Sarah in order to generate interest among potential employees. Sara shares that she filters her job applicants based on whether potential hires have secured their housing. Mike suggests helping A-player applicants find affordable housing, or to make it part of a package deal. Dr. Sabrina’s idea is for existing employees to share tips on social media on how they overcame the housing shortage in the area. Dr. Sabrina shares details of the anonymous survey that Tap the Potential’s Better Business, Better Life™ program gives to business owners’ A-players. Erin provides some great tips for Sarah’s hiring challenges from a recruiting perspective. Dr. Sabrina’s book, How to Hire the Best - Contractors Edition, has some great examples of well-written job posts. How to Hire the Best: The Entrepreneurs Ultimate Guide to Attracting Top Performing Employees will be released later this year! Dr. Sabrina suggests that Sarah may be instrumental in not only solving the housing-shortage challenges for her employees, but she may be able to solve it for the community, as well. Ep 9999: The Value of Job Costing in Managing Your Gross Profit Margin with Diane Gilson

Diane Gilson joins Dr. Sabrina and Mike Bruno on today’s episode to discuss the value of using job costing to manage your gross profit margin, which translates into more money that you keep. Although this conversation centers around job costing in the construction industry, there are valuable nuggets of information for those listening who may be in other industries, such as how to be a more effective business owner. Listen in for an inside look at how to design a business that supports the lifestyle you desire. If you are a regular listener of the Profit By Design podcast, you’ll know that it’s not about how much money you make, it’s about how much money you keep! Diane Gilson created Info Plus(+) Accounting® In 1994 to help business owners establish job-cost accounting systems so they can access critical day-to-day operations data using QuickBooks as their primary management accounting tool. Diane’s passion is designing, customizing, and upgrading accounting systems and financial controls for small to mid-sized construction and manufacturing companies. Her online workshops offer job-cost and management accounting training using QuickBooks and Intuit Enterprise Solutions—as well as in-house products—to teach, trouble-shoot, and coach clients and other accounting professionals throughout the United States. As a published author, speaker, and professional QuickBooks trainer with over 30 years of accounting experience, she is viewed as a leader in her fields of expertise. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Diane addresses the impact on business owners who are not aware of their margins. Diane details five ways that job costing dramatically increases your profitability: Locate costs that you haven’t billed out. Spot and eliminate your low-profit and loser jobs. Change your business niche. Review estimate versus actual reports. Use a 3-step combination method to increase your prices: Decrease your costs of goods sold or production costs by 5%. Increase your prices by 5%. This increases your gross profit margin of 10%. Gradually increase volume. Once business owners start seeing numbers that make sense and are set up in a logical format, it can change their lives. Investing 20-40 hours is all it takes to learn the job costing system. This could mean an extra $100,000 a year. If you’re in an industry where job costing is not part of the conversation, Dr. Sabrina encourages you to be curious about what it might look like in your business, how it would empower you to have that information at your fingertips, and what different decisions would you be able to make with that information. Diane covers the hidden costs of hiring people for your team and how that eats away at the gross profit margin. Dr. Sabrina shares the 80/20 principle, which is where 20 percent of clients are responsible for 80 percent of your revenue. Clients with the Tap the Potential and Better Business, Better Life™ programs learn this principle and how to zero in on the best clients to work with. In this way, you do not need as many team members, and those team members you do have tend to be A-players, who are able to focus on how best to serve your clients. Don’t count on somebody else to learn this job costing process for you. The business owner should be responsible for learning the process and then can later decide if this should be assigned to another team member. Ep 9898: Understanding Pricing and Value with Stephen King

On today’s episode, Stephen King, president and CEO of GrowthForce, joins Dr. Sabrina and her co-host, Mike Bruno, for an illuminating conversation around pricing. Should you discount during this economic downturn? Listen in to this discussion to hear compelling reasons why you should NOT discount, and what you should be doing, instead. Top executive at a Fortune 500 company. Bootstrapped CEO. Venture-backed tech startup founder. Non-profit fundraiser. It’s safe to say Stephen King is not your traditional CPA. Stephen is president and CEO of GrowthForce, one of the nation’s largest providers of outsourced bookkeeping and controller services. Regarded as an industry thought leader by AICPA and CPA.com, his ability to visualize the future of accounting has lead GrowthForce to become one of the fastest-growing companies in America. His experience at the forefront of technology development and accounting system design spans nearly three decades. In 1995 he founded Virtual Growth, the nation’s first cloud-based accounting service, and quickly grew it into a market leader. After being acquired by Insperity, Stephen was brought on as president of Insperity’s Financial Management Services division, serving two years before leaving to build GrowthForce. He also spent seven years working at Amnesty International USA—first overseeing 300 percent growth as CFO, then raising over $20M a year as Director of Development. Stephen’s time at Amnesty reinforced his life-long commitment to giving back to the community. As a result, non-profits represent 35 percent of GrowthForce clients. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Business owners are feeling a lot of pressure in this new normal. Pricing is harder if you’re not confident of the value that you’re bringing. Stephen addresses the issues around discounting, then provides the math: If you have a 40 percent gross profit and you give a 10 percent discount, you need 33 percent more sales to generate the same bottom line. If you have a 30 percent margin, you need 50% more sales to generate the same bottom line. If you have a 40 percent gross profit and you ADD 10% to your pricing, you can sell 20 percent less and make the same money. When Stephen let an objective person price his jobs, his fees started going up. Stephen shares some case studies and classic mistakes from clients that allow him to share their data. The accounting industry was designed for compliance. Financial accounting is designed for external users. For example, it is your CPA’s job to help you pay as little in taxes as you’re legally allowed to, to get you through an audit, and to keep the banks happy. Management accounting is about internal users and about understanding your unit economics, the profitability on each job. Stephen explains the benefits of automated activity-based costing and cautions against time-leakage. Things to consider to gain confidence in pricing appropriately: Stephen offers accounting system suggestions to set up reports to show you your “income minus your cost of goods sold equals your gross profit”. Your gross profit percentage is the most important number of every financial statement. This will tell you if you’re pricing right. Which clients should you fire? Which clients should you re-price? How do you spend money to make money in sales and marketing? Dr. Sabrina explains the 80/20 principle: 20 percent of your clients and customers are responsible for 80 percent of your revenue. If you focus on increasing revenue from the top 20 percent by 25 percent, you’re at choice and you can get rid of 80 percent of your clients and customers. One mistake is to think that your biggest account is your best client. When you have the appropriate margin in your pricing you are able to run a much more simplified, streamlined business. Whatever you do, don’t discount your services during this economic downturn. Don’t make decisions based on fear. You need to have an attitude of gratitude. Surround yourself with people who have a positive mindset and who are looking for growth. Links and Resources: Taking care of yourself is important now more than ever. Ep 9696: Done in Five Years: Securing Your Financial Future with Linda Stapf

On today’s show, Dr. Sabrina sits down with Linda Stapf, CPA and Financial Advisor with Stapf Financial Services. Linda is a Breakthroughs on the Bayou Retreat alumna. She has been to several of the Breakthroughs on the Bayou 4 Week Vacation™Retreats. She was very inspired by the activity that the participants did with Sir Steven Wilkinson for their VIP day. As they played “Gator Tank”, Linda observed different business owners getting very excited all of a sudden over the possibility of selling their businesses. Right now, Linda Stapf has set aside tax returns to get curious about business owners who are putting off retirement. She is surveying business owners to get some answers and sharing the story of the extra million dollars. Listen in to this conversation and get ready for some powerful thought-provoking information. You’ll very likely come away with some much bigger ideas for yourself concerning your future. Show Highlights: Linda has been studying her top clients, who are small business owners. What she has noticed is many of them want to sell their businesses within five years. Linda has also noticed that every year, the five-year target resets. Dr. Sabrina provides context about the 2020 Breakthroughs on the Bayou 4 Week Vacation™ Retreat, where Linda saw some business owners getting excited as they were thinking about what they would do with their time after their business sold. Linda shares her observations regarding the game participants, and how it has had a profound effect on what she brings to her own clients. Take one day out of your month, look at your results, and figure out if you would buy your business the way it stood right now. If not, what would you fix about it? Over the course of 10 years and working with 3 clients, she was able to help them save $600,000. They’ve been able to push money into retirement accounts, and there’s an extra million dollars that each one of those business owners now has. The importance of utilizing Profit First principles. Dr. Sabrina discusses the Survival Trap Image and how we can align our actions on an ongoing basis to be a direct path towards our vision. When thinking of your retirement, if you can’t see yourself going to work every day, what do you do with your time? A 4 Week Vacation™ gives you space to explore this. Linda was surprised to find that less than 20 percent of the client base that she has been serving since 1996 was business owners. Answer Linda’s Done in Five Years survey and she’ll send you her story about business survival and the extra million dollars! Linda hopes to understand what is holding business owners back from investing and setting themselves up for a financially secure future. There’s a danger to those who think that their business is their retirement. Take the time to think about who will run your business for you if you don’t have the right systems put in place. When you have your systems in place, you will be able to leave for a 4 Week Vacation™ or for family emergencies with peace of mind. The right clients are out there looking for you, and when they find you, it will give you the confidence to realize you don’t have to take all the jobs/opportunities that present themselves. Andrew relates the peace he feels now that he’s been able to identify his ideal clients through focusing on who he was serving and why he was serving them. Andrew describes the way his personal life has changed over the last couple of years. Immutable laws are protective of you. There’s so much personal growth that happens in identifying our business sweet-spot because we have to claim our strengths. Andrew shares his reaction to a distraught client when asked about the future of his business and his ability to complete her house during this pandemic. His answer will amaze you! Moments happen when you’re tempted to give up, just short of success. Believing in the process and persevering is what took Andrew through those tough moments. Dr. Sabrina explains the psychology behind our struggle with change and how to overcome the self-defeating thoughts that often accompany change. Ep 9494: Stealth Health: Take Back Your Power and Unravel the Mystery of You with Dr. Nancy Trimboli

In Episode 7 of this special series on self-care and strategy for entrepreneurs, Dr. Sabrina, The Business Psychologist™, sits down for a conversation with Dr. Nancy Trimboli, a significant person in the Tap the Potential community who has long advocated for entrepreneurial health. It’s imperative that we take care of ourselves during this coronavirus event in order to stay mentally and physically healthy during isolation. This better enables us to make the good decisions now that will help drive our business and move us toward our vision going forward. You’ll also hear tips on how to ease yourself and your team members back into a routine as more and more businesses are starting to open. Dr. Nancy Trimboli drew upon the lessons learned from her Episcopalian priest father and her training to become a black belt in Tae Kwon Do to build her bustling Chiropractic practice. Over the last 25 years, she grew her practice to be a multi-location, multi-doctor, multimillion-dollar business with nearly 40 employees. Recently, she has reduced her office locations and staffing to commit time to create online course work and to write her first adult book. She has a large local patient following, and an ever-expanding online audience who are eager to see what she has in store with new online content due to come out this year. Her most recent book, Stealth Health: Take Back Your Power and Unravel the Mystery of You, takes a fresh look at understanding your own health challenges by asking better questions and recruiting your own health arsenal of trusted sources. Little Squirrel Girl, her first children’s book is a true story about a baby squirrel Dr. Nancy adjusted back to health. Dr. Nancy’s gift is to take complex health topics and reduce them to usable, actionable bites. Making simple life changes will have a profound effect on your strength and resilience, your craft and creativity, your relationships, your work, and your future. Observing social isolation herself, Dr. Nancy created the Stealth Health Isolation Survival Pack: a twelve unit mini-course of practical changes to make now while we have this gift of time in isolation. These small incremental changes added one at a time, will allow her audience to reflect back to this time as one of personal transition and growth. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: While in isolation, Dr. Nancy developed a FREE course for simple, 5-minute fixes to change old habits so people can look back on this time as a time they emerged from their depression, where they started to lose weight, or where their relationships deepened. We’re meant to be social, and social isolation with entrepreneurial burnout is especially not healthy. The lungs are one of the few autonomic organs that we can consciously control, and when we take control of our breathing, we can take ourselves out of an anxious state. If we stay in a state of fight-or-flight anxiety, it can lead to memory loss, dementia, inability to properly digest your food, heart disease, and many other maladies. D. Sabrina’s Veggies First (#veggiesfirst) philosophy and Profit First have a few things in common! In Dr. Nancy’s Stealth Health Isolation Survival Pack, she has a unit called “Add a Big Bowl”. Enjoy a large green salad each day for a nutritional punch. Add some beautiful fruits to your day. Dr. Nancy explains how being mindful when we chew can have a positive impact on our digestion. We must take responsibility for our own health and our own health choices. Ways that we can do this are detailed in Dr. Nancy’s new book, Stealth Health: Take Back Your Power & Unravel the Mystery of YOU. Dr. Nancy shares the difference between a vitalistic viewpoint and a mechanistic viewpoint, and why it matters. “What can I do to help?” and “What can I do to support you?” are great questions to ask when tensions get high, both when isolated at home and among our team members. Dr. Sabrina reviews all of the resources that Tap the Potential offers to its entrepreneurial community. Links and Resources: Taking care of yourself is important now more than ever. Ep 9393: Be Fulfilled with Tony Grebmeier

In Episode 4 of this special series on self-care and strategy for entrepreneurs, Dr. Sabrina, The Business Psychologist™, chats with Tony Grebmeier, Founder of the Be Fulfilled community. Tony shares ways to move us toward our dreams, despite all of the different hardships that we’re experiencing in our personal lives and in our businesses during this coronavirus event. Together, Dr. Sabrina and Tony explore how to determine our need for self-care, ways we can serve others, and new ideas for gratitude. Tony is a husband, father, friend, and serial entrepreneur. His current ventures include ShipOffers, a five year Inc 5000 fastest growing company. His mission to bring fulfillment to the world extends from traditional fulfillment services to personal fulfillment. He's also on a quest to redefine how we all view and define success. Listen in on the BeFulfilled Podcast, which features entrepreneurs coming together to redefine success. It's the perfect show for entrepreneurs who know they can achieve their dreams despite their hardships. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Tony shares why connection and building community are so important to him. Ask yourself, “How can I serve?”, then get out a piece of paper and write down all the things that make you feel good when people do things for you, and start from there. You can serve in both small ways and in large ways. Offer grace to yourself and to others during this time. As Dr. Sabrina explains that many entrepreneurs were already experiencing burnout when the coronavirus event started. This burnout is a setup for depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Being more cynical about the world and isolating are some of the burnout red flags. Remember that you are not alone in your struggle, and ask for help if you need it. Tony details an aspect of his teaching called, “Fantasy / Possibility / Reality”. Be coachable and willing to unlock the greatness that makes you, ‘you’, and remember that one day you will need to reach out and help pull somebody else up. Lose the ‘I have to do this’ mindset in favor of the ‘I get to do this’ mindset. If you keep planting seeds daily, for yourself and for others, you’re going to have a bountiful harvest and a beautiful garden to walk through. You may not see it today but trust the process. Dr. Sabrina is always amazed at what has grown over the course of the year when Tap the Potential does the milestones celebrations with her clients. The BeFulfilled journal provides structure and support for entrepreneurs in making daily choices that move them towards their vision. No matter where you’re at, there are people willing to help you get to places you’ve never gone. Be willing to practice making mistakes. Ep 9292: Fix This Next with Mike Michalowicz

One of our favorite guests, Mike Michalowicz, joins Dr. Sabrina in today’s episode to talk about his latest book Fix This Next. Mike was the very first guest on the Profit By Design Podcast, and today marks his third occasion of being on the show. Listen in to find out what inspired Mike to write his latest book, learn about the Business Hierarchy of Needs as a basis of applying our business fixes, and why we need to be asking our clients what they need from us. Mike Michalowicz (pronounced mi-‘kal-o-wits) is the author of Profit First, Clockwork, Surge, The Pumpkin Plan, and his newest release Fix This Next. By his 35th birthday, Mike had founded and sold two companies - one to private equity and another to a Fortune 500. Today he is running his third multi-million dollar venture, Profit First Professionals. Mike is a former small business columnist for The Wall Street Journal and the former business makeover specialist on MSNBC. Over the years, Mike has traveled the globe speaking with thousands of entrepreneurs and is here today to share the best of what he has learned. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: The biggest challenge business owners have is knowing what their biggest challenge is. The Business Hierarchy of Needs is based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and Mike explains how the five levels of need apply in business: Sales Profit Order Impact Legacy Where you need to apply your fix is always in this hierarchy. Start at the foundation, work your way up, and pinpoint where you’re compromised, where that thing is not adequately satisfied, then fix that and go through the cycle again to find the next fix. Many small businesses try to skip levels. Being profitable is the only way you can be of service to your clients. Dr. Sabrina shares a quote from Mike in his interview in Episode 1 that made a significant impression on her: “Our clients and customers crave for us to be profitable.” Fear and lack of confidence have affected a lot of business owners, especially since the beginning of the coronavirus event. Mike has online training, The Confidence Course, that will help develop what you already have. We should be asking our customers what they need now. Valuable elements from Mike’s prior books, Profit First and Pumpkin Plan are discussed. Understanding the needs of our top 20% clients that are responsible for 80% of our revenue historically in the business is a powerful way to move forward. If we increase revenue from our top 20% by 25% we can replace the revenue from the 80% that we may have lost or we just might not want to do business with because they were not our ideal clients. “Sell the Tell”: The new process to cater to that top 20%. Go to your existing client base and ask what they want, and bring imagination to it. Mike details this project. Fix This Next pulls together Mike’s work. It helps us to understand where we need to focus. His previous books support different levels of the business hierarchy needs. Tap The Potential has 50 copies of Fix This Next to give out! Ep 9191: When Adversity Meets Resiliency with Kieran Lynch

On today’s episode, Dr. Sabrina, The Business Psychologist™, welcomes her guest, Kieran Lynch, back to the podcast. About a year ago in Episode 33, they discussed the power of culture and how that was helping him recruit as an electrical contractor in an industry where he was facing a lot of challenges around recruiting. How different his circumstances are now! Kieran and his business faced an especially difficult challenge that he came through only to be impacted immediately after by the coronavirus. Kieran's strategic thinking and his resiliency are powerfully evident in this encouraging and inspiring conversation that you don’t want to miss. Kieran has over 15 years of experience in the electrical industry and joined the Lynch Power family business part-time in 2004. First helping his father as an apprentice electrician on nights and weekends to becoming an integral part of the company’s growth and success as Principal of the company. Along the way, Kieran has held positions of electrical journeyman, foreman, and project manager. Kieran leads the finance, marketing & strategic planning departments of Lynch Power providing new-age guidance on significant decisions for the company. His broad experience, proven leadership, and hands-on approach ensures client satisfaction. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: As Kieran relates, his business experienced their best year ever, then overnight it became their worst year ever because his largest client, with whom he was doing 80% of his business, went bankrupt. Although there were rumors of trouble, he was being assured that everything was fine. Looking back, these are the five steps he wish he had taken: Relax. Analyze and ask around. Create multiple plans. Forget the past. Learn from it and move forward. Understand and recognize that this made you stronger. It’s really a blessing in disguise. Dr. Sabrina shares the 80/20 principle, which is where 20% of clients are responsible for 80% of your revenue. Kieran replays the date he broke the bad news to his employees and their reactions. Kieran describes the strategies he implemented at this time to pull his team together. He took ownership that it was partially his fault for not seeing it sooner. His business had just recovered from the financial hardship when the coronavirus hit. He did have to make employee cuts but assured them that his intention was to eventually bring them back in. Kieran predicts that in 12 months, his business will be stronger than it has ever been. He shares some of his ideas on leveraging existing clients and partners. Looking at his financials, he found a lot of “fluff” that he could cut. Keep in mind that now is a great time to be on the lookout for A-players for when you’re able to start hiring again. Ep 8989: Pumpkin Plan Your Biz: A New and Stronger Normal with Donna Leyens

Dr. Sabrina welcomes Donna Leyens to the show to discuss reimagining what’s possible for our businesses as we come through the coronavirus pandemic and transition from surviving to thriving, creating a new and stronger normal. Listen in to this conversation and prepare to be inspired as Dr. Sabrina and Donna take on several powerful questions themselves. Donna is the President and co-founder of Pumpkin Plan Your Biz. She is on a mission to save small businesses from extinction by providing business tools, strategy, training, and support to business professionals who want to make a big impact as small business growth strategists. Most business coaches and consultants find themselves reinventing the wheel with each client, producing inconsistent results for their clients, and mental burnout for the coach. That’s why Donna, who experienced these issues herself in her early years as a business coach, partnered with Mike Michalowicz in 2012 to create a repeatable business growth program based on the strategies in Mike’s book, The Pumpkin Plan. Today, she spearheads the training, certification, and continued development of their proven business growth program, so that their certified Pumpkin Plan Strategists can easily and consistently deliver high value to more clients. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Donna shares a compelling story she heard recently about a restaurant owner who mortgaged her house to buy the business, and due to the current events, she may lose both. Many businesses who were doing relatively well a few months ago now are just hanging in there by a thread. However, business owners who have been doing Profit First in addition to The Pumpkin Plan seem to be the businesses that are doing relatively well and are making it through this coronavirus pandemic. Questions to consider while reimagining: What would your business look like if you were starting your business today? What is the opportunity that you have today? How can you create a business that lights you up again? Business owners have a lot on their minds in addition to making money again. They’re thinking of ways they can help their employees and communities, as well. The Pumpkin Plan is about that intersection of top clients, our strengths, how we’re going to innovate, and then how we’re going to systemize that. Identifying our top clients and talking to them about what they want is one of our best opportunities, as Dr. Sabrina explains. Donna emphasizes the importance of strategy. If you’ve never taken the time to create an underlying, foundational strategy for your business, now is the time to do it. Strategies can be re-evaluated and tweaked as needed. Clarify your vision for how you want to experience life over the next few years. Dr. Sabrina shares additional questions that will help you to clarify your vision. Some of Donna’s clients don’t understand the relationship between life vision and work vision until she poses the following: How does your life intersect with your business? How does your business support your lifestyle and your vision for your lifestyle? Strategy programs are life-changing, not only in your business life but in your personal life, as well. Tap the Potential will be hosting a FREE webinar on The Pumpkin Plan for those curious about the NEW Introduction to Pumpkin Planning Course. Check it out here: https://www.tapthepotential.com/pumpkinwebinar/ and note the special COVID19 pricing and bring your business to the next level! The Better Business, Better Life™ strategists run a series that helps entrepreneurs to understand their vision, mission, and purpose. Ep 8888: Your Tele-Presence is Your Leadership Presence

In Episode 3 of this special series on self-care and strategy for entrepreneurs, Dr. Sabrina, The Business Psychologist™, addresses what we are going through as business leaders and entrepreneurs and reminds us of why self-care is so important during this time. Today’s guest, John Bates, joins her to discuss leadership in a virtual age. We’ve all been thrown into virtual leadership recently due to the COVID-19 event, and this presents its own unique challenges, such as how we are going to connect emotionally with the people whom we are trying to lead. John’s “why” is to unleash what is great in all of us so that it can live in the world. John lives that “why”, and he has a lot to share. Stay tuned for this insightful conversation! John Bates has spoken, hosted, and coached for over 35 different worldwide TED and TEDx events. He’s been privileged to get to know some of the top leaders in the world, the NASA astronauts, the leaders at Johnson & Johnson, JLABS, Accenture, Boston Scientific, Coca-Cola, and many others, including many Tap the Potential clients. He works with people on a very deep, personal level. The amount of vulnerability, openness, self-reflection, and honesty that a well-done TED-format talk requires is second to none. The insights into leadership, success, and fulfillment in life that John has gained from his years of experience with this allow him to share some of the biggest, most powerful secrets of truly successful leadership that exists. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: John shares his successful, earlier days of entrepreneurship and his deadly struggle with an autoimmune disease, which seemed to be triggered by stress and a lack of sleep. To get out of the hole he found himself in, he had to really learn how to take care of himself. There is no greater time than the present to be paying more attention to self-care so that we are able to share ourselves with others. Assess your entrepreneurial burnout for FREE HERE. You will get feedback that shows your current risk for burnout and if you have more than 3 symptoms, you are at high risk and will need to look at self-care measures to put in place. Dr. Sabrina details her self-care strategies: Sleep - at least 8 hours per night Only check social media and major news sources once per day, preferably mid-day Exercise Meditation (Dr. Sabrina enjoys the Calm App!) Journaling John expounds on Dr. Sabrina’s self-care strategies and offers his own tips: Self-care is for men, too! It’s necessary to stay in the fight. Box breathing John also loves the Calm App! Ep 8787: Protecting Your Greatest Assets: Your Mindset and Your Business with Sir Steven Wilkinson

In Episode 2 of this special series on self-care and strategy for entrepreneurs, Dr. Sabrina, The Business Psychologist™, addresses being very protective of your headspace. Her guest, Sir Steven Wilkinson, joins her to discuss protecting another very important asset: our businesses. We all have a lot of extra stress in our lives today, and Dr. Sabrina’s intention is to take care of the international entrepreneurial community during this crisis by sharing ideas to help us cope. Self-care for us all is extremely important during this time, so please share this information with your team members, who may also be feeling unsafe during this coronavirus event. Sir Steven Wilkinson is the Founder of Good & Prosper. He was also the VIP Speaker of the Tap the Potential 2020 Breakthroughs on the Bayou retreat. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Look two years into your future and picture what you want your life and your business to look like. Avoid the “Survival Trap ”, which is a short-term decision that gets us through today, next week, or the next two months; but can take us far off course. Are there options that can move you CLOSER to your vision? If we keep in mind how we want to be and how we want our business to come out of this, we will make better short-term decisions that better serve our future goals. Sir Steven weighs in on current events and on how we should be minimizing fallout, as governments are recognizing that small business owners are the true backbone of this entire economy. Dr. Sabrina’s personal philosophy when it comes to government programs is that it’s great if it’s available, but she wants to build her life and business in such a way that she does not need to rely on it. One of the positive things that have come out of this crisis is the return to community, and community is everything in these times. Dr. Sabrina’s tip of the week on self-care is to implement a daily huddle with your team for the sake of morale. This can be via zoom or phone, if necessary. Focus on providing updates, wins and successes, and gratitude. Allow team members to express their fears and encourage team members to respond in a supportive way. Ask your team members what support they need and look for ways that other team members can show up and support and be a gift during that time. A team topic for discussion: What random acts of kindness have you given, experienced, or witnessed lately? Dr. Sabrina shares some more self-care tips: Protect your mindset by being very careful about the information you take in. Sleep is critical in a number of ways. Daily exercise is important. Think strategically and surrounding yourself with like-minded, supportive entrepreneurs. Listen to the Profit By Design Podcast. Episodes are made up of positive conversation and sound strategies to help keep your business sustainable. Assess your entrepreneurial burnout through our free assessment HERE. This will help you look at self-care measures that you need to put in place so that entrepreneurial burnout does not get out of hand. Sir Steven discusses the creation of a FREE eBook titled "Leadership in the Time of COVID-19” that you can download on his Website. There’s a humorous title for it when you download it! He designed the e-book with two action items in mind: The urgent need for restructuring; and How do I turn this to my advantage? Since we don’t know when this crisis will end, Sir Steven offers tips and ideas that we can be working on every day. This is a great time to step back and determine how you should be caring for yourself in order to be the leader you need to be. The Q-Storming process is a useful tool that bypasses tunnel vision. Ep 8686: Mindset and Mental Health Framework for Entrepreneurs

In Episode 1 of this special series on self-care and strategy for entrepreneurs, Dr. Sabrina lays down a framework regarding the importance of our mindset and mental health. She encourages us to acknowledge that the current pandemic has changed life as we know it, and explores ways to help us think more strategically about how this situation can help prepare us and our business for any future adversity. Listen in to hear Dr. Sabrina’s tips and resources that will help you cope so that you can not just survive, but thrive. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: In studying entrepreneurs and assessing their levels of entrepreneurial burnout, Dr. Sabrina is seeing a very strong correlation between burnout and gaps that exist in our business. Many entrepreneurs in the Tap the Potential community have been practicing Profit First, which is a great way to strengthen your business foundation and provide you with cash reserves to help get you through whatever might be happening in your business. Burnout leaves us in a constant state of chronic stress, with stress hormones coursing continuously through our bodies. This kind of stress significantly raises our risk for depression and suicide. Tunnel vision causes us to miss the opportunities around us. Dr. Sabrina explains “survival trap” decisions and how Tap the Potential shows you how to avoid these traps by helping you to create a business plan that supports your life vision. Our survival instincts are great at helping us to survive but they’re not great at moving us closer to our vision. Make sure that any decisions that you’re making to get through the immediate situation are in alignment with your life vision. Dr. Sabrina provides her ideas for sharing the protocol plans with her small group clients, those in the Better Business, Better Life™ program, and the retreat alumni. She also has something to offer those who are not current clients of Tap the Potential. What is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and its relevance to entrepreneurial burnout? If you haven’t already, get a baseline of your entrepreneurial burnout by taking the FREE assessment here https://www.tapthepotential.com/assessment. Dr. Sabrina shares the “Veggies First” philosophy: It is critical that you take care of yourself first. Here are some tips, which Dr. Sabrina explains in detail: Get adequate sleep Maintain a healthy mindset Practice Mindfulness (Dr. Sabrina enjoys the Calm App!) Exercise Limit your media consumption and make it off-limits in the morning. Your thinking is the average of the five people with whom we spend the most time, so surround yourself with people who think in a healthy, positive way. Tap the Potential’s resources to help support you: The Profit By Design Podcast airs each Thursday covering healthy conversations that are good for your mindset. Ep 8585: Seizing Opportunities in Anticipation of an Economic Turn-Around with Erin Longmoon

In light of the Corona Virus event that is currently going on, many companies are finding it necessary to downsize during this economic slump and have unanswered questions about what might be coming next. There is another side to this situation, however: This may actually be the perfect time to recruit and hire your A-players. On today’s show, Sabrina, Mike, and their guest, Erin Longmoon, owner of Zephyr Recruiting, LLC, discuss seizing opportunities in anticipation of an economic turn-around. Listen in to learn how you can use this uncertain time to your advantage! The passion to eradicating toxic workplaces comes from a place a lot of us can resonate with. Show Highlights: This is an opportunity to rebuild the employee brand of the company. This is also an opportunity to find new A-players that would be an asset to your team. Erin addresses various reasons why the hiring market currently has a healthy supply of A-players. Many of the Tap the Potential clients have been doing Profit First so they are in a very strong cash position. It takes around 40 hours to recruit per role, according to Erin. Some of Zephyr’s clients are hiring people on a contingency basis. They make an offer to the one A-player they don’t want to lose. When you’re hiring, present an offer that is a little higher than the going rate, and then over time show them how you’re going to get them to the 90th percentile for pay over the next year or two, assuming they hit certain benchmarks. Some states are allowing employees to come on board for a limited number of hours per week for on-boarding and training without it affecting their unemployment. Dr. Sabrina shares how her clients in the construction industry say business is booming. Traditionally, certain positions have been very hard to fill but now it is an employee market. Erin explains “Employee Brand Marketing”. Dr. Sabrina explains how this Profit By Design podcast always encourages the building of sustainably profitable businesses and shares hiring tips from her book, How to Hire the Best. Erin and Dr. Sabrina discuss the importance of wording job descriptions. Zephyr differentiates itself from other recruiting companies in a number of ways. There are two places where the interview process can go awry: the interview and failure to check references. Zephyr puts in some extra steps here to avoid the snafus. Ep 8484: The Importance of Creating a Sustainable Business

Natural selection: What does this mean for us as entrepreneurs? Many businesses are in a constant state of survival, and that’s never been more apparent than observing the current impact of the coronavirus and its impact on business. Some businesses will not make it through this time; some will come out battered and bruised—but stronger; and some will come out absolutely thriving. On today’s show, Dr. Sabrina and Mike explore the importance of creating a sustainable business from Day One. They discuss what we can do to get our businesses through this time and come out stronger. Listen in for some strategies that can help you weather this (and any) storm. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Mike shares the definition of “natural selection” and applies it to the business world. Dr. Sabrina shares acceptable modes of competition, the danger of competing on price, and the importance of building margins into pricing. Traditional thinking advised setting aside three months of cash reserves, but current thinking is that six months is probably safer. You should be able to answer “YES” to each of these questions: Are you bringing in work from your top clients? Are you doing work that aligns with your strengths? Is it work that can be systematized? Does this work align with your immutable laws? Does it move you closer to your vision? Some businesses are going through a “creative destruction” right now, letting go of team members that are not a good fit, creating a culture that they want to implement going forward, etc. Dr. Sabrina explains the 80/20 principle, which involves focusing on increasing business from our top 20 percent of our clients that are responsible for 80 percent of the revenue in the business, and the financial impact it can have. There are a lot of business owners who incorporate Profit First, who have been in a good cash position coming into this crisis. As business slows down, they may find it tempting to stop Profit First until after the crisis has passed, but now is the time to ramp up your good habit, NOT stop it. Dr. Sabrina addresses business owners who entered this pandemic crisis with debt and have added more debt. Dr. Sabrina and Mike discuss options for struggling business owners. Powerful questions to consider when projecting into the future: What do we think is going to be happening four months from now? Which competitors of mine will be gone four months from now? What opportunities does that create for us as a team? What kind of clients would we want to go after that our competitors served, but we could serve better? What team members would we need to go after that kind of business? After this crisis, people will not want to go back to grinding it out. They will want to be much more intentional about quality time with family and integrating that time with work better. Businesses will also implement virtual work more readily than ever before. Maintain good habits, pay attention to getting clarity around sustainability, and stay focused. Links and Resources: Taking care of yourself is important more now than ever. Ep 8383: Getting the Most from Business Coaching with Barb Wade

On today’s episode, Dr. Sabrina and Mike chat with Barb Wade, one of Dr. Sabrina’s coaches. You’ll get an in-depth look at the coaching industry: What goes on behind the scenes that a consumer of coaching services should be aware of, as well as how to utilize coaching for yourself to make it a great experience that supports your life vision and where you’re headed. PLUS, Barb dives deep into her career pivot and why she now focuses on margin and profit over top-line revenue to run a business that supports her life vision. Whether you’ve had coaching, or if you have ever considered coaching, you’ll not want to miss this illuminating conversation! Barb Wade, M.A., is a Transformational Coach, Speaker, and Author who works with high-achievers to release the patterns, fears, and obstacles that have been keeping them settling for LESS than what they truly want MOST. Barb helps her clients re-define success based on their authentic values and priorities – not external “should’s” and expectations – and create exceptional real-world results in life and work. Barb speaks frequently at conferences and on industry panels, has been featured on ABC, NBC, CBS News, and FOX, and was the official on-air Life Coach for the Fine Living Channel for 8 years. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Barb shares the pivot she experienced in her coaching business that began after the 2008 economy crash. Social pressure to “grind it out” is prevalent among entrepreneurs. However, it is perfectly ok to choose a different path, one in which our work supports our lifestyle. Work supports life, not the other way around. Why margin and profit are more important than top-line revenue. Pay attention to what feels right to you and don’t lose track of that. There are coaches that you do not want to invest your money and your time with. We make our decisions from a place of love or fear. When we stop to consider where our decisions are coming from, it can bring us to a quicker ‘A-ha!’ moment. Barb has witnessed miraculous things occur following the conviction of mentees’ decisions when the decisions were made from a place of love. What you should look for in a coach: Barb and Dr. Sabrina sound off. A good coaching client is someone who is willing to get vulnerable, own their mistakes, admit that they’re in a hard place, and be willing to think through how they might do things differently going forward. Working on mindset first will have a cascading effect. Mike shares words of wisdom for the entrepreneur who has never had a business coach. Ep 8181: The Power of Mindset in Managing Fear During Troubled Times

On today’s episode, Dr. Sabrina and Mike are joined by Monica Coleman to talk about the power of our mindset and how we manage our energy, especially during a time of disruption such as we are all currently experiencing with the Coronavirus impacting us. Don’t miss this timely and relevant conversation! Monica Coleman is the founder of Inside Information Coaching and Consulting, LLC, and architect of the Limitless Methodology. As an athlete herself, Monica has always been intrigued by the link between mindset, performance and leading a successful, satisfying life. Her work over the past 15 years with athletes and executives created a birds-eye view of the challenges inherent to high achievers in both their professional and personal lives. Monica's natural curiosity, her ability to inspire others, and her commitment to ensure her clients' move from potential to success has made her a pioneer in the field of performance coaching. As a Certified Professional Coach (CPC) since 2009, Monica meets clients wherever they are on their journey, helping them to create a successful pathway to the lives they have thought were unattainable. Monica crafted the Limitless Methodology to apply the principles in a different setting and with a larger scope, enabling more people to unlock the top performer who resides within them. Her dream is for every individual she meets to better understand their true nature. Bearing witness to other's success and watching their transformation is the greatest expression of her true purpose in life. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: We’re going to have emotions and reactions because we weren’t really prepared for the changes we have recently experienced and we didn’t know that the world was going to change this way. We have a lot of fear and most of our emotions are reactionary. One of the first helpful things we can do is acknowledge that whatever we are feeling is normal. What we tell ourselves about what’s going on has a profound impact on the choices we make and the experience we’re going to have. For entrepreneurs, the skills you exhibit during this time in relation to health are the same skills that will serve you as you move back into your businesses when things begin to normalize. Monica shares how her Limitless Methodology is a great class for anyone because when you change fundamentally on the inside, you change across the board, and she illustrates how this applies to current events. Pay attention to the opportunities in front of us and be grateful for the things that you do have. It’s ok to be vulnerable! If you see something you don’t like, don’t go to war with it. Just change it! Our lives and businesses will be different post-Coronavirus but we get to choose what that is going to look like given the circumstances we can’t control. We are not static; we are dynamic, and we have the ability to move forward. Dr. Sabrina offers tools to use in the face of fear. Take this opportunity to build the systems into our business that we haven’t had time to do before because we were so busy putting out the fires. To quiet the harsh inner critic inside ourselves, ask: Would you talk to your child that way? Be mindful that fear drives the inner critic. Remember that this Coronavirus pandemic is an event. Think of your life 3 years from now and figure out how you want to be experiencing life. We want to be making choices in the now that move us closer to the experience we want to be having in the future. Tap the Potential is offering strategy sessions for entrepreneurs who are struggling with the choices they are currently facing and desire to make strategic decisions that will serve them long-term. Ep 8080: Work Supports Life

Letting go of shame: shame over businesses, marriages, kids, and families. That’s what took place recently at The Entrepreneurs’ Retreat Center during the Breakthroughs on the Bayou 4 Week Vacation™ Legacy Retreat. Dr. Sabrina recently spent four days with a group of entrepreneurs who desire to grow and learn, and it was in this setting that they shared their struggles with one another. On today’s show, Dr. Sabrina and Mike will be discussing the healing that takes place when breakthrough happens. Listen in on the inspiring, feel-good, behind-the-scenes experiences that took place at The Breakthroughs On The Bayou, a retreat that teaches entrepreneurs like you how work supports life, not the other way around. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: When we get our mindset right, it is a snowball effect because of all the good flows from that. The retreat’s atmosphere is that of a safe, supported place. There are a lot of introverts in the group and there is no pressure to be anything other than who you are. Dr. Sabrina welcomes 25 retreat participants into her home and she wants every single person to feel special and recognized. Participants took the new assessment to assess their level of entrepreneurial burnout in conjunction with the gaps that exist in their business. The longer we let entrepreneurial burnout go, the less effective we become as entrepreneurs. Sleep deprivation is a significant risk factor for entrepreneurs. Dr. Sabrina explains what happens in our bodies when we do not get enough sleep. What Dr. Sabrina saw happening at the retreat were people who decided they were going to create a business that supports their life and determined to take their life back from their business. We are not designed to work 40 hours a week. Current research suggests that working 20-30 hours a week is optimal for productivity. Do you recognize yourself in any of these stories? Participants divulge some of the most challenging things they have endured as entrepreneurs. Participants also share what they are experiencing in their lives now that they are taking their lives back from their business, as well as what they intend to experience in the next year as they take their lives back from their business. You have an opportunity to draw a line in the sand now! Decide to take your life back in such a way that creates more time for what matters the most to you, where you make more money and have more money in your bank account, all because you’re being more strategic and more effective in the choices you make. Ep 7979: Navigating the Dynamics of Family Business

The majority of small businesses are family-owned. Complex dynamics come into play as family members navigate business decisions while seeking to enjoy leisure time together. Join Dr. Sabrina, Mike, and their guest, Alex Schauer, on today’s episode, as Alex shares her personal story of running a business with her family, what she has learned, and how she uses her personal experience to serve her clients. Alex Schauer works with business leaders to increase their revenue. On the day she married her husband, she also became an integral part of their family’s manufacturing company. She learned firsthand the challenges family business leaders face working with siblings and parents—while also growing a thriving business. Over the past 2 years, she has helped over one hundred businesses create a marketing strategy to increase their revenue. She especially loves working with family businesses to help them communicate their marketing message—without telling the story about how their grandfather started the company! Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: Marrying into a family business, Alex and her husband spent the first year navigating married life and business life. The family business needed help with marketing, so Alex stepped into that role and found creative ways to market their company and product. Using the StoryBrand framework, their revenue increased by 417%. Other businesses saw what Alex’s business had achieved and reached out for more details. This was Alex’s introduction to working with other businesses to create a marketing strategy to help them increase their revenue. Dr. Sabrina explains psychological dynamics at play in family business and ways to successfully communicate as a family working together. Family members are not always a good fit for the business. Balance your client’s needs with your family’s needs. Communication within a family business needs to involve going to each other when there is a problem, because Mom and Dad won’t always be available in day-to-day operations. Personality types and how they affect family dynamics. Alex addresses what business owners may be missing in marketing and branding. Dr. Sabrina shares the importance of consistency in business, and relates one of her favorite YouTube videos from Simon Sinek, “Do You Love Your Wife?”. The point of the video is that there is not a point in time where your wife fell in love with you, but it was because of an accumulation of the small things you did that showed thoughtfulness. It’s the repetition of these things over a period of time that leads to the realization that you love your spouse. This is key and pertains to marketing and leadership, as Dr. Sabrina details. Alex wraps up the conversation by expressing how it is a privilege to be able to work with family members because we don’t have forever. Be each other’s biggest cheerleaders to help them become the people they need to be in this world. Links and Resources: Are You Ready to Take Your Life Back from Your Business? Ep 7878: Veggies First: Doing Good Things on a Daily Basis

Welcome to this episode of Profit by Design, a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group! Today’s subject is a rather juicy one: personal diet and how it can translate into our business life. As someone who has long-struggled with eating healthy and setting time aside for exercise, Mike shares how he has come to understand that a healthy lifestyle is more of a mindset than anything, and how fit people have at least one quality in common: resilience. What he has discovered is that even fit people fall off the health wagon on occasion, but they shake it off and get right back on without using the slip as an excuse to stay in an unhealthy mentality. Join Dr. Sabrina and Mike as they share their personal experiences, and Dr. Sabrina lends professional insight into the correlation between personal and business. Our habits make or break us. Dr. Sabrina teaches how “all or none” thinking sabotages us, as well as how putting Veggies First is critical to our own health and the health of our business. It’s all about consistency. Strive for consistency over perfection. Prepare for a few of your own ‘A-ha!’ moments as you listen in! Show Highlights: Mike draws parallels to how conflict with leading a healthy lifestyle can be similar to how conflict shows up in our business life. Dr. Sabrina illustrates how building good habits apply to both our personal life as well as our business life. We cannot ignore issues that come up in our business. They must be addressed and it doesn’t have to be “all or none”. We can continue our progress forward while working on a solution. Managing our stress level more effectively as entrepreneurs help us to think more from a growth mindset. Dr. Sabrina addresses the difference in success and failure mindsets and cautions us to be careful about what we tell ourselves. Here’s a helpful trick in using the word, ‘yet’! Not taking care of ourselves can lead to unrealistic expectations about what we can physically endure. The mental stress that we experience takes a physical toll. Dr. Sabrina enumerates the health consequences of constant cortisol running through our bodies. “Veggies First” - What are the good things you’re going to do today to help sustain yourself? What are you doing today to make your business stronger? Suggestions on things we can do to sustain our business and make it stronger. Take the Entrepreneurial Burnout Assessment! You will learn if your business is putting you at risk for burnout, and help Dr. Sabrina with research for the 4 Week Vacation book that is publishing at the end of this year. https://www.tapthepotential.com/assessment Links and Resources: Is your business putting you at risk for Entrepreneurial Burnout? Ep 7777: The Iconist: The Art and Science of Standing Out with Jamie Mustard

Do you ever feel as though your marketing messages are lost in a sea of digital overwhelm for your clients and customers? If you aren’t being heard, your message dies. This has significant implications for the health of your business. Learn how to harness the primordial laws of human perception to stand out as Dr. Sabrina interviews Jamie Mustard, author of The Iconist. Jamie teaches the science of what causes anything to stand out in the modern world. Through his work, Jamie has observed the primal laws of BLOCKS™, which explain why anything stands out and endures in the mind or fails to. In his book, The Iconist: The Art and Science of Standing Out, through pop stories and comprehensive research, he shows how BLOCKS™ solve the problem of us all being made invisible as we compete for less and less available attention in a messaging and media over-saturated world. He teaches how BLOCKS™ allow anyone in any field to stand out at will based on the natural primordial laws of human perception. As host of a popular RadioActive talk show on KXL101.1 FM in Portland, OR, Jamie interviewed hundreds of designers, innovators, artists, and agents for social change who are having an impact all over the world. An avid consumer of popular culture, Jamie is a graduate of the London School of Economics. He is obsessed with the economics of attention and has consulted for Intel, Cisco, and Symantec. He breaks all this down into why we entrepreneurs need to have a simple way to get our message across in terms of marketing and branding, as well as why this is important for our teams and our overall quality of life as entrepreneurs. Prepare for an eye-opening and fascinating conversation! The Profit by Design Podcast is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: In 1950, a person would be exposed to approximately 250 advertising messages in their day-to-day life. By 1970, the number of advertising messages in a day increased to around 2,000. The last time this was studied was in the late 1990s, and 5,000 - 7,000 advertising messages a day is what a person was exposed to. This was all before the internet hit full stride and before social media. Today, the number of advertising messages we are exposed to on a daily basis is estimated to be 10,000 - 15,000. A person can’t process even 1,000 of these messages, so what this means is that anybody trying to communicate is just one of tens of thousands. Jamie’s book, The Iconist, offers a solution to this very real problem. “Continuous partial attention”, a term coined by Linda Stone, who did some research for Microsoft and Apple, means that we’re being bombarded by so much information that we’re only partially paying attention. As a business owner and entrepreneur, this is a huge thing when you’re trying to get your business noticed. To be iconic is to be the first choice. Anything busy in a world overloaded with content, no matter how good it is, instantly gets discarded. People have to have an idea of who you are and what you’re offering them before they have a chance to think in their lizard-brain. Jamie discusses a chapter in his book called, “Road Signs” and how warning labels work. The book teaches you how to turn some aspect of what you do into something that has the same power as a STOP sign so you get that instant fixation. As long as there’s something behind it that’s genuine and real, people will engage further and remember you. “What is the best thing about myself that intersects with what my customer most cares about?” The answer to that question is what you present in a bold way on your website. Then, they can learn about all of your other strong points that you have to offer. “Drag" is when you’re presenting all of the busy stuff but you haven’t self-identified the best of what you have to offer that your customer is wanting. Some psychological ramifications of too much choice include paralysis, anxiety, dissatisfaction, and depression. These same psychological ramifications happen to apply to feeling like you can’t get noticed because there’s too much content around you. Science and research show that when we present complicated things with big, bold, simple imagery, it changes the way we relate to complicated information. We retain more of the information and appreciate it more. Adults crave this elementary communication even more than children do. A BLOCK™ is the anatomy of what makes something iconic. Dr. Sabrina relates how in Mike Michalowicz’s book, Profit First, the Profit First Equation of Sales - Expenses = Profit is a great example of a BLOCK™ and the way it makes the Profit First concept iconic. BREEED - Blocks Repeated Exhaustively Everywhere Equals Demand. This is the snow-ball effect. Jamie shares his poignant backstory and how he came to be interested in the subject of his book. Ep 7676: Are You Maximizing Your Profit Potential?

Dr. Sabrina invites a valued member of the Tap the Potential team to join her on today’s podcast. As a Tap the Potential strategist, specializing in Profit First and Pumpkin Planning, Stacey Seguin supports Tap the Potential’s efforts in identifying ways for clients to save money, MAKE more money and free up their time. Listen in to this thoughtful conversation! It’s a peek inside the internal discussions of the Tap the Potential Strategist team. Tap the Potential clients have more time for what matters to them and more money in their bank account than they’ve ever had. This conversation offers a fly on the wall glimpse into how our strategists accomplish this with our clients. Show Highlights: Being a business owner and entrepreneur is a lifestyle that can easily lead to burnout. Stacey relates her own compelling story of entrepreneurial burnout. The Tap the Potential team has compassion for what business owners are going through because they’ve all lived that life. Fortunately, there can be great things waiting on the other side of that burnout. A powerful, simple question: What has to change in order to make this possible? Getting sleep and regular downtime is imperative to reducing stress. A comparative advantage (vs. competitive advantage) creates opportunities for an increase in profit. Discover why your industry standard may be your own self-imposed glass ceiling. Tap the Potential focuses on ways to better their clients’ businesses. Stacey and Dr. Sabrina field a question on a business owner’s desire to open a second location. How to know when you are maximizing the profit potential in your business. When we decide to sell our business, we need to be able to show that the business can support a C-suite executive (or several!) and pay appropriate compensation. If we can’t, it’s not sellable. 74: How to Make Your Time Worth $10,000 an Hour

If you’re finding yourself wading through the weeds of your business and finding it difficult to follow through with your intentions, then this episode is for you! Dr. Sabrina shares insight into a mindset that helps you grow your business. She explains the difference between a high-value activity and a low-value activity and introduces tools that help you to stay focused on those highest value activities that grow your business. If you’re needing help with staying on track or if you’re just looking for some fresh inspiration, listen in as Dr. Sabrina provides strategies to get the most out of your time and effort so that you can make your own time as an entrepreneur and as a business owner worth $10,000 an hour. Show Highlights: What are the things going on in your business that you really like, that are going well, and where you really shine? What are the things going on in your business that you don’t like, that you find frustrating, and that make you feel bad? Everything that is going well right now is the result of $10,000 an hour thinking and ON your business actions you have taken in the last few years. Everything that is not going well right now is the result of a gap. This is where there is a need to put focused attention on either the strategy, or the systems, or the people in your business. Strategies, systems, and people fall into the realm of $10,000 an hour activity. What is going on in your life? The fallout of what goes on in the business impacts our life. Creating an asset is an example of $10,000 an hour activity. The return on investment of your time and energy will be realized over the long-term. What’s the most valuable thing that I could do right now that could have the greatest impact? Dr. Sabrina shares a personal story that led her to asking herself this question. It has become the go-to question that helps pull her out of the proverbial weeds. Another powerful question to ask yourself is, “What’s the one thing I can do such that everything else will be easier or unnecessary?” Ask yourself this question at the beginning of the week. The answer is your $10,000 an hour activity for the week. Dr. Sabrina invites you to take her 10-minute assessment to discover gaps in your business plan and the actions to take to close them. Dr. Sabrina explains the 80/20 principle. 20% of our time produces 80% of our results. Low-value activities squeeze out the time and mental space for the high-value activities. Value your time by delegating and systematizing. Work in your zone of strengths. Dr. Sabrina covers the lies we tell ourselves as entrepreneurs. Apply the 80/20 principle to serving your top 20% clients and customers. Here are some distinctions between $10 an hour, $100 an hour, $1,000 an hour, and a $10,000 an hour activities. Team members should look at what they’re doing in the business. Be open to shift activities to the right person to do them. Ep 7272: Little Known Secrets to Building a Profitable Business

In keeping with the theme of “Designing for Profit in 2020”, Dr. Sabrina sits down with her guest, Christine Rico, to shed some light on things that we may not be thinking about in our business that have a pretty significant impact on whether or not we’re building a profitable, sustainable business. Christine Rico is a good friend and colleague of Dr. Sabrina. She is the owner of CFO On Speed Dial and a fellow Profit First Professional. Christine is a financial consultant, business growth expert, and social entrepreneur who got her start in financial management while keeping the books for Cooperative Home Care Associates in the Bronx, NY more than 20 years ago. The Cooperative was then a start-up and is now the country’s largest worker-owned business. At CFO On Speed Dial, Christine and her team help business owners set and reach financial goals and build companies that are making healthy, sustainable food products, installing renewable energy systems, and growing high-impact consulting businesses. Christine works with companies to improve profitability, craft expansion plans grounded in the company’s overall goals and vision, and get the cash that businesses need to grow. She is on a mission to close the gender-revenue gap by helping women-owned companies accelerate growth. Show Highlights: Christine and Dr. Sabrina discuss a recent blog post of Christine’s, which celebrates growth in the number of companies owned by women but highlights the appalling percentage of revenue that these women-owned companies bring in. This is what she calls the “Gender Revenue Gap”. Growing your company in incremental steps for the short term may be reality, but you have to know where you’re going. If you don’t have a big dream that you’re aiming for, it’s really hard to get outside of the day-to-day and what you think you can accomplish next. What is your big dream? What impact would it have if your business is bigger? Christine shares her vision and the impact she hopes for with CFO on Speed Dial. Christine recommends reading Profit First by Mike Michalowicz for structure in how you think about cash in your business and gives an overview of her five fundamentals needed in order to move to the next level in business. Dr. Sabrina shares her own personal story about her introduction to the Profit First philosophy. The distinction between social impact and charitable giving and some ways we might be thinking about these in our business. Ideas on how to measure impact. Christine describes the role of a CFO. 71: Developing Emotional Intelligence as a Business Leader

Developing emotional intelligence as leaders, and specifically the ability to master our thinking, is critical as small business owners. If there’s an area in your business or your life where you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, or just not happy with the results you’re getting, you’ll want to listen to Dr. Sabrina Starling’s fascinating conversation with her guest on today’s podcast. Kim Ades is a good friend and long-standing colleague of Dr. Sabrina’s. She is also President and Founder of Frame of Mind Coaching™ and JournalEngine Software™. Kim is an author, speaker, entrepreneur, coach, and mother of five, and she has 15 years of experience coaching many of North America’s most respected leaders. She is recognized as an expert on performance through thought mastery. She uses her own unique philosophy and quirky coaching style to help her clients deal with core issues and shift their thinking in order to yield extraordinary results. Show Highlights: Kim explains the idea behind “thought mastery”: Every outcome starts with a thought. Both positive and negative thoughts will impact our performance and therefore, our outcomes. It is possible to improve our results by simply changing our behaviors or the actions that we take, but there are many consideration before doing so! When you look at your life today, it’s a result of your thinking yesterday, and the preceding days. The results that we want are usually something tangible, but when we truly master our thoughts, we start to leverage our thinking not to get specific outcomes but to get certain feelings that supersede the idea of specific outcomes. Kim shares her personal story of how she became interested in coaching and thought mastery. When you’re holding on to a thought and cannot let it go, you have to first understand what it is that you’re really holding onto before you can move forward. We often have false beliefs that contradict our key desires. Our behaviors can directly contradict our deepest desires, and yet we continue to do them. We often take actions that take us away from what we really want. Kim describes the key signals that indicate someone’s thinking is not leading them where they want to be going. Pay attention to your emotional state! Kim and Dr. Sabrina reflect on trust within leadership and teams. Kim offers steps to take and questions to ask yourself to start working toward thought mastery. Links and Resources: Get the Book!! 70: Designing for Profit in 2020

If we aren’t designing our businesses and our lives in the direction that we want to go in, it’s too easy to let the business run everything. If this is a rut you’ve fallen into, or a rut you wish to avoid, listen in to Part 4 of 4 in the Strategic Planning Series as Dr. Sabrina and Mike hash out money and cash flow in both the business and personal life, and the concept of “break-even to thrive”. If you missed the first 3 parts, be sure to go back and listen to them so you have all the tools and direction you need to make your vision for 2020 a reality. Show Highlights: The concept of “break even to thrive" includes so much more than covering expenses, employees, and costs of goods sold. It also includes appropriate budgets for growing the business, budgets for investing in efficiency, proper compensation for the owner and the A-player team members, and investing into the business. Clients that have been doing “Profit First” for 12-18 months discover they have more money in their compensation account than they’ve ever seen before, and often feel guilt. It’s hard to find money to attract A-players when you have tight cash flow. You must learn what you really need to feel good and for your team to be healthy and for this to be a great place to work. Don’t forget to budget for your own coaching, training, and the development of the team. Dr. Sabrina and Mike offer suggestions on how much to allocate and where to find that budget. Budgets for traveling to conferences often get overlooked, as do retreats. Retreats should not be treated as a luxury. Dr. Sabrina explains why she doesn’t suggest investing in all team members until you’ve really analyzed who you have on your team as A-player’s. It’s critical as business owners to invest in ourselves to get that higher level support. Investments in training and development should be bringing a return on the investment and it’s that return where the business starts to grow, you get better team members, and the whole business operation becomes more efficient through the investments in training and development. Mike discusses the wisdom of having a mindset shift if you’re prone to having the “shiny object” syndrome. Investing in things that you think will take you to the next level is not as important as investing in yourself and your employees. Dr. Sabrina shares her personal headspace when she first started investing in coaching. There’s a big “gulp factor” as you move from “break even” to “break even to thrive”. What did your business do for you in 2019? What do you want it to do for you in 2020? Where did our businesses fail us in 2019? Dr. Sabrina and Mike take turns being in the hot seat! Profit by Design Podcast is about designing businesses to support the lifestyle we desire. Mike shares his excitement about reading Jeffrey Gitomer’s latest book, Get Sh*t Done: The Ultimate Guide to Productivity, Procrastination, and Profitability and how he plans to implement the tools and tips to carve out the time he needs to push things forward. Dr. Sabrina and Mike share some tips about what has worked for them in reaching their goals. Links and Resources: Get the Book!! 69: 2020 Strategic Planning, Part 3

Welcome back to Dr. Sabrina’s end-of-year strategic planning series! This episode is all about your life! At Tap the Potential, we believe work supports life and not the other way around. Going into 2020 we need to be strategic about our life and how we set our business up to support the lifestyle that we want to have. What has your business done for you lately? Go ahead and grab a notebook or journal and a pen, and be sure to write your answers down. Show Highlights: Dr. Sabrina invites you to download the Wheel of Life tool to use during this episode and explains the concept behind it. How are you growing yourself as a person? Completing the old process - this is an exercise shared by Dr. Sabrina from her first coach, Lisa Kramer. This gift-to-yourself is a powerful end-of-year exercise ritual that Dr. Sabrina has participated in for about 15 years. Step 1: Look at all the different areas of your life that are reflected on the Wheel of Life and list out your wins, successes, and breakthroughs during 2019. Conversely, list out your losses, disappointments, and breakdowns in each area of the Wheel of Life. Step 2: Create the new. Write out your list of wins, successes, and breakthroughs that you want to have for 2020. Be very specific and write them as if they’ve already happened. Step 3: Go through each area on the Wheel and rate your current satisfaction in that area. Lower numbers reflect lower satisfaction, higher numbers reflect higher satisfaction. Step 4: After rating each area of the Wheel, shade in your ratings. This gives you a visual image of your current experience in your life. If we think about the Wheel as a tire on the unicycle of life, if we have areas on our wheel that are not fully inflated, we’ll be in for a bumpy ride on this road of life. If we have low ratings across the Wheel, we’re having to go through life with a deflated tire. Consider picking out one area on the Wheel that you’ll be very intentional about improving in 2020. What is it in your life that you’ll choose to focus on? Think through the actions that you need to take to increase your satisfaction with that area in your life. Dr. Sabrina discusses high-quality leisure time versus low-quality leisure time. In the book Digital Minimalism, author Cal Newport goes into all the different ways that we become addicted to social media, and the things that happen within social media that feed that addiction. Newport suggests that we get as strategic with our leisure time as we do with the way we plan our businesses. What is it that you’ve wanted more time for in your life in 2020? Start using that time that you intentionally carve out from your business to support your interest in those endeavors. Dr. Sabrina shares a few things that has set herself up for success on her current 4 Week Vacation™: She deleted all of her social media apps from her phone so that she does not have access. She has given thought to the leisure time activities that she wants to be intentional about pursuing. She has committed to being more strategic with her leisure time while on sabbatical. Creating a vision board for 2020 can be a profound activity in terms of insights and ‘A-ha’ moments. Start with old magazines and cut out the pictures that speak to you. Put those images on the vision board. Also, look for pictures that support your vision for 2020. You can design this board any way you wish. The more we hold our vision in front of us, the more likely we are to spot opportunities that will help bring that vision to fruition. Links and Resources: Get the Book!! 68: 2020 Strategic Planning, Part 2

Too many small businesses are suffering due to a lack of strategy. Too many small business owners are working way too hard due to a lack of strategy. It’s easy as business owners to get bogged down in the weeds of business, doing the doing, and neglecting the why of what we’re doing and how we’re going to be more effective and more strategic. Join Dr. Sabrina on this end-of-year strategic planning journey to set yourself and your business up for greater success in 2020. Go ahead and grab a notebook or journal and a pen, and let’s get started! Show Highlights: Vision 2020 for yourself: How do you want to experience it? Dr. Sabrina asks a powerful question. Take notes during the coming week on the thoughts and ‘A-ha!’ moments you experience around this question. Start the question with your personal life, rather than your business. Consider pausing the show, and write down your answers right now and see what comes up. Be sure to write in present tense. Dr. Sabrina suggests different aspects of your business that need to be considered. Now think about the different aspects that will support your business in being healthier, stronger, and that will give you a better quality of life. Think through profitability. Imagine that it’s December 31, 2020, and you have really strong systems in place in your business. Every team member, including the owner, deserves the opportunity to be away from the business and their role be covered. You need to design your business that can operate independently of any one team member, including the business owner. Business owners who have strong systems and a great team in place are well-positioned to take a 4 Week Vacation™, or simply be away from the business to pursue other interests or take care of things in the family that needs attention. Look at your leadership. In small business, our culture is a direct reflection of us as a business owner. Imagine again that it’s December 31, 2020, and you have built a top-performing team. You no longer feel like you’re having to scramble to cover open positions. You have A-players who are working together to create a highly profitable, great place to work. You have highly-engaged team members in the right seats in the business working from their strengths. They know and support the team’s goals. Allow yourself to embrace that vision and experience what it would feel like. What do you want to move forward and accomplish? Zero in on what would have the greatest impact for you on the experience that you want to be having as the owner of the business. Dr. Sabrina shares some of her own vision for 2020. 67: 2020 Strategic Planning, Part 1

You’re invited to join Dr. Sabrina on a strategic planning journey on the podcast over the course of the next 4 weeks. Dr. Sabrina and Mike have an episode lined up for January around “Designing for Profit in 2020. Leading up to that, Dr. Sabrina will be taking us through a process of reflecting on what we have learned during 2019, focusing on wins and successes and using insights from that to set us up for even more success in 2020. You’ll want to grab a notebook or journal and a pen to capture your insights. You’ll also want to hear her explain the science behind why it’s so important to write your answers down! Show Highlights: As you reflect on 2019, consider these questions as a way to own your wins and successes: How did you improve the profitability of your business this year? Did you increase the revenue in your business this year? What did you do to improve your service delivery, particularly with respect to your top clients and customers? What did you do with respect to your hiring? Did you fire anybody this year? Did you release any team members who were not a good fit and help them find opportunities elsewhere? Did you hire some A-players? Did you improve your systems for attracting and hiring A-players? Did you improve your team? Did you do anything to help your employees grow and support them in their personal development? Did you do anything this year to increase your emotional intelligence as leader? What did you do to make your marketing more effective and more efficient? How did you make better use of your marketing dollars? Have you taken more time off in 2019 than you have in the past? What have you already put in place that you want to do more with in 2020? What are the projects you’ve been working on, that are almost done, but not quite there? What do you need to complete? Identify the things that you have put in place this year that are working exceptionally well. Identify the things that did not work so well or did not bring the expected results, and consider cutting those things. What could you stop doing in 2020? Think about the lessons you learned as you conducted business in 2019. What insights did you have that you can take forward and build on? What were the breakdowns? What didn’t go well? What did you put in place to improve it? If you haven’t put anything in place, consider this as part of your strategic planning for 2020. Dr. Sabrina discusses why and how to identify your top clients. Links and Resources: Get Ready for 2020!! 66: Fiercely Loyal: Retaining A-Players with Dov Baron

What are the secrets to retaining A-Players? It comes down to loyalty. In today’s episode, Dr. Sabrina interviews loyalty expert Dov Baron to uncover the keys to building loyalty among our most valued team members. Some of these insights will surprise you! Dov Baron has been twice cited as one of Inc. Magazine’s “Top 100 Leadership Speakers to Hire”, also cited in the “Meeting and Event Professionals Guide to the Top 100 Motivational Speakers”, and he’s been named as one of the “Top 30 Global Leadership Gurus”. Dov is a man with a finger on the pulse of the evolving world of NextGen Leadership. He’s a best-selling author of several books. His latest book is Fiercely Loyal: How High Performing Companies Develop and Retain Top Talent. He is the host of the National US TV show, “Pursuing Deep Greatness with Dov Baron” on Roku TV, and the host of the number one podcast for Fortune 500 listeners globally, “Dov Baron’s Leadership and Loyalty Show” on iTunes. It’s also carried by FM and AM radio stations across the United States. Dov also writes for, and has been featured in, many industry magazines, including being featured on CNN, CBS Small Business Pulse, SHRM, Yahoo Finance, Boston Globe, Business in Vancouver, USA Today, CEO, Entrepreneur, and many more. Show Highlights: The biggest mistake leaders often make is assuming millennials are not loyal. The biggest part of communication is listening. You have to listen! Millennials stay in a job for 1.2-1.5 years, so you need to retain them in order to get your investment back. Salary no longer buys loyalty. Something you need to know: Many top-talent millennials would rather work for you than a large corporation. Dov explains why. How moving employees around based on their interests and new opportunities can be beneficial. Today’s young people learn differently than we did, and that impacts training. Dov explains why every business needs a “Chief Relationship Officer”. You must invest in your people-learning, emotional intelligence, and how to communicate better. Building relationships are crucial. When AI takes over a lot of jobs, you’ll be out of business very fast if you don’t learn to build relationships with the people who run the AI. Dr. Sabrina and Dov discuss employees that are a good fit, and those that are not. It’s important and compassionate to help someone along to their next opportunity if they are not a good fit in your business. They will respect this and have good things to say about you and your business once they have moved on. They become evangelists for your organization. Dov addresses the root of the fear of conflict, which is rejection. There’s nothing wrong with conflict, it’s the framework that is wrong. We often learn unhealthy models of conflict. You have to learn healthy models of conflict, and that requires listening, and hearing the other context. Conflict resolution is the ability to hear the context of the other person. Context isn’t present tense, it’s always history, and they may not know it in that moment. Dov describes an exercise to trigger the release of oxytocin that doesn’t involve touch, and why oxytocin is important. You don’t have reciprocal vulnerability with an acquaintance, but you do have it with a friend. It’s the willingness to confront where you disagree. Conflict has such negative connotations, so changing the word to “dialogue” or “narrative” can help create a safe space for team members to come forward and address points of disagreement. Encourage intelligence in your organization. Rebrand a conflict as an “intelligence exercise”. Dov shares a compelling story and discusses the importance of vulnerability. Show up, be real, and be authentic. Links and Resources: Get the Book!! Ep 6565: The Self-Reliant Entrepreneur with John Jantsch

Author of several entrepreneurial classics, John Jantsch joins Dr. Sabrina on today’s show to discuss his latest book, The Self-Reliant Entrepreneur. This book reflects on John’s own entrepreneurial journey and the sources of inspiration that he found along the way. The Self-Reliant Entrepreneur: 366 Daily Meditations to Feed Your Soul and Grow Your Business taps into the wisdom of 19th-century transcendentalist literature to provide daily encouragement and powerful questions to support us in remaining fiercely self-reliant while chasing our own versions of success. Get ready for a fun and deep conversation, during which Dr. Sabrina and John ask each other powerful questions from The Self-Reliant Entrepreneur. You’ll get an inside glimpse into their respective worlds, their entrepreneurial journeys and what each is working on for the coming year. John Jantsch is a marketing consultant, speaker, and author of Duct Tape Marketing, The Referral Engine, Duct Tape Selling, The Commitment Engine, and SEO for Growth. In addition to his own writing, speaking and consulting career Jantsch is a podcasting pioneer, with a continuous string of weekly podcast episodes dating back to the summer of 2005. He has interviewed thousands of guests and appeared on the other side of the mic, as a guest, hundreds of times. Dr. Sabrina was a recent guest on John’s Duct Tape Marketing podcast. Show Highlights: John’s previous books were “how-to’s”, but he had a desire to write a book that was more of a “why-to”. His mission has always been to bring life back into being an entrepreneur. John describes the basis for his book, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, and how the 1850s was one of the first counter-culture periods in America. We have to develop a level of trust and stop letting outside and subconscious voices control us. This level of trust allows us to focus on the things we can control, which is how we show up and how we respond to everything that happens. A great deal of stress comes about by trying to control those things that aren’t in our control. Dr. Sabrina shares how we can develop self-trust and the two practices in her life that taught her to listen to her own voice: journaling and meditation. The Self-Reliant Entrepreneur ends each daily passage with a powerful question and provides us with an opportunity to think about life and circumstances from a different perspective. This can allow us to shift our mindset and yield new insights and opportunities for us. John reads the passage and question that corresponds with Dr. Sabrina’s birthday. What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? Dr. Sabrina divulges her next book: The 4 Week Vacation John’s answer is that every time he answers that question, he goes ahead and does it. Therefore, his answer is constantly evolving. He also relates that the next big challenge is to figure out a way to maximize his assets. Duct Tape Marketing is For Sale! A surprising challenge is figuring out who we are when we step away from the business that is so much a part of our identity. It’s important to have clarity around your mission. According to John, when people understand their true core values and they release the need to have a perfectly-refined purpose, the purpose will find them. Listening to her clients' needs is a way that helped Dr. Sabrina discover her gifts to share in the world. Stepping outside his comfort zone has enabled John to stretch and grow. Staying at the top of the mountain is beautiful scenery, but not much learning and growth happens there. Links and Resources: Get Ready for 2020!! 64: Finding Success with the Unconventional Pumpkin Plan Strategies with Steve Dale

Steve Dale has a story that you very likely will be able to relate to. Steve had mentors but easily admits that none taught him how to run a profitable business. He missed out on hours of family time and vacation because he knew how to bring in work. The only problem...the work consumed his life. When Steve discovered The Pumpkin Plan and Profit First, he recognized a different, more effective way to run a business. Steve is a Pumpkin Plan strategist and a big ambassador for How to Hire the Best - Contractors Edition. It’s important to Steve to show other contractors a better, more sustainable path as an entrepreneur. Will they listen? Steve Dale is the owner/operator of Angle Contracting, LLC in Idaho. After college, he worked as a truck dispatcher and then tried a cubicle with no windows for a short time. He quickly realized working for others was not his cup of tea. After marrying and purchasing a home, he dove into home projects. He merged his love of construction projects with his business skills to build Angle Contracting. Listen in to discover the realizations that moved Steve from working too many hours, missing time with his family, and unable to juggle his workload, to learning some lessons and becoming a firm believer in the unconventional strategies offered in Profit First, The Pumpkin Plan, Clockwork and How to Hire the Best. Show Highlights: How the “Special Sauce” in the Pumpkin Plan changed Steve’s business and family dynamics. Steve lists the negative health effects of working too hard and too long and not enjoying family time. There is a better way! Dr. Sabrina, Mike, and Steve discuss what to do when you have the desire to share these tools with family, friends, and business associates, and they aren’t seeing the opportunity. Steve shares a compelling story about letting go of a customer who would never become a “big pumpkin” and how he was able to retain that friendship. Respect and confidence are natural outcomes of this system. Burning out is whole-body: physical, mental, and spiritual. It is not sustainable to run a business that repeatedly burns us out. Steve plans to coach and also work on his remodeling business to where he can have somebody run it for him. We must keep craft alive. There are a lot of people getting out of the trades because they’re aging out, and there are not enough people coming in. Dr. Sabrina shares a personal story about hope and the appreciation for the kids wanting to have a career in the trades. Mike addresses how bad companies generally produce bad employees, and how great places to work generally produce great employees. Being deliberate and intentional about the clientele you work with is a big part of creating a great place to work. When a business owner is not stressed out over dealing with a client that is not a good fit for your company, that frees up energy to focus on developing your team. Having both A-player team members and A-player clients is important in creating a great place to work. 63: The Insider’s Guide to Writing a Book with Paul Brodie

If you’ve ever wanted to write a book, you’ll want to listen in as Dr. Sabrina and Mike give the inside scoop of the back-end of the book publication process, sharing an inside peek into what actually goes into writing a book, getting it published, and what you need to know about after it’s published. This is going to be fun! Dr. Sabrina’s guest today is Paul Brodie, the CEO of Brodie Consulting Group. As a book publisher, he helps coaches, consultants, speakers, and business owners share their story with a proven system. What makes Paul’s books different is his ability to explain complex ideas and strategies in a simple, accessible way that you can implement immediately. Paul is a lifelong learner and earned an MA in teaching from Louisiana College and a BBA in Management from the University of Texas at Arlington. In his spare time he loves to read and write books, to travel, especially to Maui and Las Vegas, and he’s an avid sports fan. Paul is also a proud Rotarian and a member of the Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce. Show Highlights: Paul shares the compelling story of how he came to be a publisher. There’s more to writing and publishing a book; you have to market it. When writing, you need to stop overthinking everything. The book doesn’t have to be huge, but you need at least ten key talking points, especially if the book is a business-type non-fiction. There’s an app where you can speak your book out if you prefer not to write it out. You would need to speak 10-12 minutes of audio for each chapter. If you can focus on one talking point a day for two weeks, you can crank out a book. The main thing that readers want is something direct and to-the-point. They all want to connect with you. Remember though, that it’s not all about the front-end. The front-end gives you credibility. The back-end makes you money. Writing a book is not about a pitch or a script, it’s about genuinely caring about people. That comes across and you don’t have to be sales-y. Paul discusses the meaningful legacy-type books that he also publishes. Dr. Sabrina and Mike offer insight into writing as a therapeutic process. Paul has written a variety of different books and provides a moving example of a book he wrote that was especially therapeutic for him. “The Imposter Syndrome” For a final proofread of your book, one of the best things you can do is to speak your book out loud or record an audio version so that you can catch any final mistakes. Paul covers the different forms of publishing, leveraging your services, the investment and recouping your investment. Links and Resources: Get the Book!! Ep 6262: The Secrets to Tapping Into the A-Player Network with David Burkus

When it comes to attracting A-Players to your business, tapping into the networks of A-Players is key. But, what if you have exhausted your contacts? Then what? In her latest edition in the How to Hire the Best Series, Dr. Sabrina shares David Burkus’ insights on how to network based on human behavior and psychology, and not rote networking advice that we frequently hear. David joins Dr. Sabrina to on today’s show to challenge our outdated notions about how we “should” network. These insights will be powerful in helping you attract A-Players to your team. Plus, Dr. Sabrina digs into radical management practices from David’s other book, Under New Management, that the Tap the Potential team and some of our clients are experiencing great success with. David Burkus is a best-selling author, a sought-after keynote speaker, and an Associate Professor of Leadership and Innovation. His newest book, Friend of a Friend, offers readers a new perspective on how to grow their networks and build key connections, one based on the science of human behavior, not rote networking advice. He’s delivered keynotes to the leaders of Fortune 500 companies and the future leaders of the United States Naval Academy. His TED Talk has been viewed over two million times and he is a regular contributor to Harvard Business Review. Show Highlights: David’s inspiration for writing Friend of a Friend was from two different ideas: 1) New studies from the world of network science, which are fascinating but not always practical; and 2) Annoyance at the networking advice books, which tend to be autobiographical. Dr. Sabrina covers a challenge business owners encounter with networking to attract A-players, and how she discovered the answers in one of David’s books. When people think they’ve asked everyone they know when searching for an A-player, most of the time they have only asked people they feel comfortable asking. The subtitle of David’s book is the Hidden Network and describes those people that you already know, but you’re forgetting. Most people would benefit from a system where they’re constantly pinging those people, reaching out to them whenever a thought of them is triggered, such as by reading a news article or seeing something on social media that brings them to mind. This move is beneficial for not only when you’re looking to hire, but looking to be hired, as well. David explains the concept of tapping into networks through brokers, and the key to finding out if you’re already a broker or relying on brokers. It’s not enough to just build a diverse team because the team, the longer it works together, will be less and less diverse. The longer they work together, the more they are going to think alike. Be mindful of constant refreshing. Dr. Sabrina and David discuss the concept of “no email”, and how it can be doable and beneficial. David delves into the science of oxytocin and what happens to us in our bodies when trust is extended and how we reciprocate around that. Don’t cater to C-and-D-players when designing policies and procedures. In North America, we brag about how much we work. We need to flip this and senior leaders need to be showy about how little they’re around and be gone so that other team members get the message that taking time off is actually Ok. Dr. Sabrina and David discuss the 4-Week Vacation™ Challenge and David research backing up how important it is to fully unplug for an extended period of time. Can you really get rid of the annual performance review? David says ditch it! Instead, invest time in training your managers on how to coach team members. Get Ready for 2020!! 61: Building a Team that Works from their Strengths

Chasing top-line revenue can be a path to self-destruction for entrepreneurs. What happens when you lose sight of your business sweet spot to chase revenue? On today’s episode, Darren Virassammy from 34 Strong joins Dr. Sabrina to share his previous work experiences as a team member in a company that had a tight sweet spot, then lost it. Darren and Dr. Sabrina share a mission to create great places to work and on today’s episode they dive deep into how Pumpkin Planning to define the business sweet spot is foundational to creating a highly profitable, great place to work. A tightly defined sweet spot makes it possible for team members to work from their strengths. Dr. Sabrina and Darren will be partnering again in the coming months to deliver “Leading Your Organization From Your Strengths” through Tap the Potential. Consider joining them as it is powerful training for your team! Darren is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of 34 Strong, comprised of a team that believes everyone deserves a great place to work and that any workplace can be great. A leading expert in the global employee-engagement community, the 34 Strong team leverages the strengths-based approach to human development to create massive shifts within organizations, both culturally and on the bottom line. He and his team have created sustainable change in small micro-businesses all the way up to large, organizational teams at the FDA, Bank of America, and the California Department of Public Health. Recently Darren has keynoted for Hitachi Global Women’s Conference, the Rotary World Peace Conference, the Professional Grounds Management Society, and author Mike Michalowicz’s ProfitCon. Darren’s 34 Strong business partner, Brandon Miller, is the co-author with his wife, Analyn Miller, of a strengths-based parenting book titled Play to Their Strengths, which was published in July 2019. Show Highlights: Darren shares how he worked for a company that unintentionally built teams that played to their strengths, and how smoothly their projects went. Then everything shifted. The owner of the company decided that job descriptions were going to be combined, and no longer would the team be able to play to their strengths. This eroded the sense of accountability. Darren relates how this transition negatively affected the team dynamics, and how team members experienced trust issues, clarity, and self-doubt. They went from engaged to highly disengaged. Although the company grew in revenue over the next year, the bottom line was massively threatened. The company grew, but the team didn’t. This was incredibly painful. Darren provides some examples of having to push back on a client trying to force him to violate the company’s immutable laws. In the construction industry, the idea is that you’ll be able to make it up in volume. This is a myth! Being set up for failure: Darren describes being a fire-fighter having to put out “fires” on other projects because an estimator was trying to manage a job. He questioned why more time wasn’t being spent training the estimators so they could be more successful in their projects. “Controlled burns” would have been spending the time to align talent and deciding which roles people stayed best in. Dr. Sabrina summarizes the Tap the Potential Solution for creating a highly profitable, great place to work. Dr. Sabrina and Darren discuss his experience with “Pumpkin Planning”, how Pumpkin Planning is not a “once and done” event, and how Darren’s team is looking at “Pumpkin Clients”, as well as “Pumpkin Fields”. Considering the quality of your revenue. What is the cost to acquire it? Ep 6060: Being the Leader Who Creates a Great Place to Work

How are you showing up as a leader today? Ronda Conger calls us to be the leader we wish we had and challenges us to be intentional about how we are leading. Ronda Conger is Vice President of CBH Homes, Idaho’s largest homebuilder. CBH Homes has been named a Best Place to Work in Idaho repeatedly and ranked 10th in the Nation for Productivity. Dr. Sabrina’s interview with Ronda is featured prominently in Dr. Sabrina’s book, How to Hire the Best: The Contractor’s Ultimate Guide to Attracting Top Performing Employees. On today’s episode, Ronda shares how “Love Wins” is the backbone of CBH’s culture. She reveals leadership practices that make CBH a great place to work, and talks about the gauntlet candidates go through to get to work at CBH. Plus, she digs into the surprising reason why 70% of their team is comprised of women in this male dominated industry.  Ronda leads the CBH troops daily, and has overseen all areas of the company for the past 16 years. Last year, the Idaho Business Review named Ronda “2018 Woman of the Year”. On top of that, she also received the “2018 St. Luke's Children's Hospital Luke Award”, the “2017 Women in Construction” award, and the “2017 Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Community Impact” award. Ronda is a business woman, professional speaker, and author.  She is on a mission to spread a movement with her three books: Better Human: It’s a Full-Time Job, Better Thinking: Think Better. Be Better, and her newest book, You Go First: Become the Leader Your Team Needs. Show Highlights:  Ronda shares her poignant and moving background, and how she came to understand that before she could lead others, she must first learn to lead herself. Be grateful for what you have in the moment, while you’re rising and reaching for more. The “Love Wins” philosophy: You have to love yourself. When you love yourself, then you give out love with everyone you come in contact with. When they feel it, they give love to everyone. It makes your families, friends, team members, and communities better. CBH Homes received Entrepreneur Magazine’s “Top Company Culture” award. CBH Homes has also received “Best Places to Work” awards for the last 7 years.  Ronda relates how CBH Homes surveys their employees to make sure their team loves them. Ask yourself if you were the employee, would you want to go and spend your day at the company? Would you enjoy it? Ronda’s leadership team created a list of 12 attributes that they wanted their team members to have. Some examples she provided: be a high producer, be coachable, strive for greatness, be a team player, communicate, be grateful, have an attractive attitude, have fun, and be fun. This is how they hire like-minded people.  Dr. Sabrina points out how you must have a lean and mighty team to be profitable in a tight labor market. Ronda mentions the importance of taking very good care of those team members. A-players need help in slowing down and having fun so they don’t burn out. Make the time for weekly one-on-one conversations with your employees. Consider asking your employees if there’s anything you can do to make their lives better. Dr. Sabrina and Ronda chat about the importance of staying curious. Women make up 70% of CBH Homes work force. This is mostly because men typically do not make it through the pre-interview gauntlet. “Mutually invested relationships” are what business owners should strive for. Run your ranch high and tight! Ronda explains what this means to her. Individual goals have to align with the team goals. Team goals have to align with the company goals. Regular check-ins and performance measurement makes sure this is happening.   Links and Resources: Get How to Hire the Best on Amazon www.TapThePotential.com/Amazon How to Hire the Best MasterclassReady to become an Employer of Choice to attract a steady stream of A-Players chomping at the bit for the opportunity to work with you? Ep 5959: Book Launch Day: The Tap the Potential Solution

It’s LAUNCH DAY for Dr. Sabrina’s new book, How to Hire the Best Contractor’s Edition!! Listen in as Dr. Sabrina gives Mike Bruno the inside scoop about the inspiration behind the book, how she’s happy to have the writing part behind her now, and how thankful she is to have the Ambassador Group on Facebook to help get the word out. Don’t miss out as Dr. Sabrina breaks down all the elements of the book that work together to help you transform your business into a highly profitable, great place to work! Show Highlights: Hiring is the #1 challenge for entrepreneurs. When we keep hiring someone and they don’t work out, we tend to take it personally. It is the hardest part of being an entrepreneur, and Dr. Sabrina’s book series, How to Hire the Best, puts an end to this common difficulty. Another common challenge is the disconnect between business owners who have a genuine heart to create a great place to work, yet have trouble executing on that intention. Through How to Hire the Best, and the coaching delivered at Tap the Potential, Dr. Sabrina and her team are helping business owners align their mindset, intentions and actions to create great workplace cultures. We will be able to grow regardless of what’s going on with the labor market. Designing a sustainably profitable business is such an important point that Dr. Sabrina and Mike devote an entire podcast to it -- it’s the “why” behind the Profit by Design Podcast. Dr. Sabrina details the 5 Key Strategies in the Tap the Potential Solution. You want to be the business owner whose team members are out on the street singing your praises. 58: How to Implement Hire the Best™ Strategies

The Contractor’s Edition of How To Hire The Best is just a week away from launch and is now available for pre-sale on Amazon! Dr. Sabrina and Mike sit down with Chad and Diane Hatfield, owners of Hatfield Builders and Remodelers in Plano, TX to discuss insights they’ve had as they implemented the How To Hire The Best System™, things that they’ve learned, and things they do differently now to create a great place to work. Chad, Diane, and Mike are featured prominently in Dr. Sabrina’s new book, so join in as they share their stories, and don’t miss the discussion on The Choice Map™, a powerful mindset tool that Dr. Sabrina shares with clients at Tap the Potential. Show Highlights: Control is just fear. We can only control ourselves, we can’t control how other people receive things. Diane observed that over the last 15 years of business, Chad has filled every role possible. As other people stepped into those positions, he found it very stressful that they weren’t doing as good a job as he was, and he felt as if he had to do it all by himself. Mike recalls how, before he started working with Dr. Sabrina, he was very frustrated and angry because he felt he always had to fix things. His employees felt this, and it drifted over into his family life, as well. Once he was able to work on changing his mindset, he was able to rebuild himself foundationally. It was at this point that he observed that the way he was acting was directly impacting everything around him. When we find ourselves constantly blaming our employees, we have to look at ourselves first and look at how we can become the leader we need to be to have this team that we want to have. Chad shares the encouraging and painful words that a peer from shared with him: “Build others up while learning humility and reach your true potential.” These words have a profound impact on his life. If you’re blaming others, then you’re a victim, and you’re not responsible for it. It’s not your fault, other people are doing it. Building others up and learning humility is the antithesis of that. It’s accepting responsibility for everything that occurs around you, and everything you control yourself. It takes a lot of courage to face your inner demons. When something goes wrong, ask yourself what was your responsibility? What was your role in it? Think about it from the other side. Determine how to communicate better and how best to solve the problem. Chad notes how similar he and Mike were, and witnessing the profound shift that Mike made. This inspired him to make his own changes. The Choice Map™ is a tool that has immediate impact. Dr. Sabrina explains how to avoid The Judger Pit. The questions we ask determine the solutions we find. If you focus on blame, everyone is going to go down that path and nobody wins. Dr. Sabrina explains that respect is often cited by A-players as an attribute that makes a company a great place to work. Nobody wants to be yelled at or belittled on job sites or in front of team members, as this is very humiliating. If you have a bad reputation as a bad boss on the street, you’re not going to be able to attract A-players. Mindset is at the heart of a respectful culture. Surround yourself with people who remind you of your better self. Ep 5757: The WHY Behind How to Hire the Best with Mike and Dr. Sabrina

Dr. Sabrina is in the hot seat in today’s episode! Her co-host, Mike Bruno, interviews her about her BIG NEWS, and that’s the upcoming release of her new book, How to Hire the Best Contractors, which will be published October 24, 2019. As you will hear Dr. Sabrina explain, she had written the first edition of How to Hire the Best for rural business owners, but as soon as that was published, she started getting calls from entrepreneurs not in rural areas, but from large metropolitan areas all around the country. The more she talked with these entrepreneurs, who were asking for her help, the more she began to see that hiring and attracting top-performing employees in small business wasn’t just a problem for her and her clients, who were mostly rural. It was a problem for small business owners all over the country. Dr. Sabrina began to see a pattern among the callers who were seeking her help and discovered that most of them belonged in the same industry: construction. Once she started researching more about this, she found that out of all industries out there, construction has the greatest labor shortage. Stay tuned to find out more about her personal “why” for writing this book, and what it has to offer you! Show Highlights: Mike shares his own personal story about the struggle to find the right people. Dr. Sabrina shares the impact on entrepreneurs and the entrepreneurial spirit when you don’t have a good system in place for recruiting and hiring. Working 80-90 hours a week with no time off is not sustainable. You might be able to do it for a few years, but that’s taking a huge toll on your health. As a psychologist, Dr. Sabrina wants to help business owners have a better quality of life and work-life balance. It’s not that we don’t WANT a better work-life balance, we just don’t often have the SKILLS and the SYSTEMS for attracting A-player team members to our businesses. When she started writing her first book, she knew she wanted to address these issues. Dr. Sabrina is passionate about getting this book into the hands of the construction industry’s business owners. When we have the team members and systems in place, it opens up more freedom in our lives to do what we want to do, and pursue the opportunities we want to pursue. The price of life when you don’t have the appropriate systems and people in place. How the book is structured: Dr. Sabrina took what she learned from the first edition of How to Hire the Best, and as she began to teach the material, she observed what worked all of the time and what worked some of the time. In this new edition, she focused on the things that worked 90% of the time, and that were the most doable, and that get the best results. She “Pumpkin Planned” the content of the book, and took out the 20% of the first edition that got the greatest impact and put that into this current edition. Then she made it even more specific by focusing on contractors. Early feedback on her book was that despite it having “Contractors” in the title, it was actually a valuable book for any small business owner or entrepreneur. Dr. Sabrina thinks this is because she has front-loaded the book with her “Tap the Potential Solution™ for creating highly profitable, great places to work”. If you’re struggling with hiring right now, something to consider: everything you think you should be doing is most likely setting you up to mis-hire. Using traditional hiring practices, you will mis-hire 75% of the time. The hiring process is very frustrating for entrepreneurs who think they’re doing the right things to hire people, only to see failure over and over, because they tend to internalize that and think there’s something wrong with themselves. Forgive yourself for all your mis-hires, and recognize it’s not your fault. In the next podcast episodes, Dr. Sabrina is going to pull portions of the book and do some teaching around the Tap the Potential method for Creating a Highly Profitable Great Place to Work, which will help you position your business, in a very tight labor market, no matter the industry, to be an employer of choice, and to operate in a lean way that allows you to have that high profit built in to your business. She will also be teaching skills around hiring. After the book launch, Dr. Sabrina will be doing a completely updated LIVE on-line course on How to Hire the Best. SPECIAL INVITATION FROM DR. SABRINA If you would like to help entrepreneurs and contractors with their ability to hire the best, Dr. Sabrina invites you to be an ambassador for the book launch.
