"I will speak of Your testimonies also before kings, And will not be ashamed" Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist
29. August 2021 Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist Mark 6:14-29 John the Baptist couldn’t keep his mouth shut. Within his vocation as prophet, he had to speak. The king was living a lie and left unchecked, one lie would lead to another. For the sake of the king and the kingdom, the last Elijah, John, spoke the truth in love. And what did he get for it? First he was imprisoned by the king and then the bitter adulteress and incestuous queen had him beheaded. Was it worth it? Was John’s witness a waste of time? Look what it got him! The memory of him is forever marked by his end. Two thousand years of church artwork has featured his notorious head on a platter. Was it worth it? Was there another way to overcome over Herod and Herodias’s heart? Perhaps if John had instead preached a more encouraging word or simply looked the other way, those two would have come around eventually?

"Jesus is still going about this world speaking that word, Ephphatha!” Trinity 12 — August 22, 2021
What can Jesus do with the deaf and mute? As with all sin and all that sin has corrupted, Jesus comes to forgive and to restore. Forgiveness and life go together. So, Jesus wastes no time. Taking the man aside, He puts His fingers in His ears and touches His tongue, and sighs “Be opened!” And the deaf-mute man’s ears were opened and he spoke rightly. A great miracle has been given to this man.

"He who is mighty has done great things for me!" St. Mary, Mother of God - August 15, 2021
The child of St. Mary is the Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. We call Mary blessed because the Father blessed her with the Son who would save her. It is said that women will be saved through childbirth (1 Timothy 2:15). The bearing of children is a blessing, one to be received in faith and devotion. St. Mary exemplifies such receptivity despite the scandal of her virgin birth. Even more so, this child is both blessing to her and a blessing to everyone who calls on his holy name.

"The injustice of your world is the example of God’s mercy" (Trinity 9) - August 1, 2021
For this work of Jesus, your heavenly Father commends him for His wisdom, shrewdness. By unjustly dying, rising, and giving the wealth of the Father to those who do not deserve forgiveness, He has won for the Father friends, you, to dwell with Him in the eternal tabernacles. Indeed, while from your perspective you owe your God a great debt, but from His perspective He has forgiven them all completely and fully. And His forgiveness is far greater than the opposite of the unjust steward. He has not forgiven only 20 percent or 50 percent of our debts to Him. But by in utter worldly wastefulness (or Godly forgiveness), He has removed the entire wage for your sin. Balance owed? Zero. Merit needed? Nothing. Worthiness to work on? Zip.

"Jesus never gives any two of us the same" St. James the Elder 2021
It’s James and John, not John and James, the sons of Zebedee. Every family, every congregation, every state, and indeed, all human relationships are defined by hierarchy. It’s an inescapable part of life. There are greater and there are lesser. Some serve and others are served. Some rule and others are ruled. Some work and others enjoy leisure. Some are wealthy and some are poor. It is not humanly possible that all people have equality of status, reputation, income, or occupation. While it is possible to treat all people as equals, it is not possible for all people to enjoy equality in every aspect of life. That’s a utopian pipe dream!
