"Nothing stands now between you and your loving Friend" Christmas 2 2022
You see how the devil and the world are enemies of the little baby Jesus and His kingdom. They strenuously fight against Him, even as He is a small child. They seek perennially to smother, oppress, and wipe out His Word and work. There will be no lack of sin and trouble in this life because you are a Christian. Your flesh will tempt you daily to great shame and vice. The fallen world will seek to tear down you and especially your faith through persecution and other sufferings. The devil will also be nipping at your heels day and night with his lying and murdering so that you have no peace within or without. Just as Christ himself was tormented in this way, so will you also. While God permits this affliction, He never loses control. Things never get out of hand. Herod’s treachery had its end. God limits evil. He always does. He promises that will never be tempted more than you are able to withstand. He promises to provide you with every strength you need for the carefully measured load. He permits. He promises to bring an end to it in good time. His omnipotent hand is in complete control.

"God has given us a future in the Mystery of the Incarnation" Christmas Midnight 2021
Christmas-time is the bold proclamation that God was born to save sinners; Jesus came to save lost causes like you and me. This is the great mystery at the heart of our Christmas proclamation. That's why we have a future, even as church bells stop ringing across our nation.

"Jesus comes to save a world that's dark, lost, and hopeless" Christmas Eve 2021
“[Mary] will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” And so, in the midst of all that causes you shame and struggles and humiliation, there's Jesus, God's grace and peace. There is always grace and peace with Him for you no matter how great your shame, no matter how difficult the struggle, and no matter how low you sink into humiliation. With Jesus, there is always room for you to come and find rest today and always.

"Like John, the preacher points to Christ in the manager" Advent 4 2021
Every call to repentance and every proclamation of God’s holy Law, by prophet and pastor alike, is preparation to receive Jesus. Like John, our confession of sin and repentance is preparation to receive Christ Jesus. Like John, the preacher points to Christ in the manager, and Christ crucified and declares, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” “Take, eat, the body of Christ for you!” “Take, drink, the blood of Christ shed for you for the forgiveness of sins!” “You are forgiven! Go in peace!” So, the man sent speaks the Word and gets out of the way. The Word by the Holy Spirit does the work.

"Love your neighbor and hate your enemy?" Advent 3 Midweek 2021
But how about, “Hate your enemy?” We ask the catechism question, “Where is this written?” It has a ring of truth being paired with the explicit, “You shall love your neighbor.” It makes sense to us. It’s the best Santa Claus morality. There’s no problem loving those who love us. Of course, we are to hate our enemies! Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, is as true today as then. It’s the kinetic, conservation of energy (the first law of thermodynamics), and the equal and opposite reaction (Newton’s third law.) But you can spend all day looking up “and you shall hate your enemy” and you will not find it.

"Jesus comes to make Himself yours with his Word and gifts" Advent 3 2021
When your bones grow weak, Jesus still loves you. When the blood dries up in your veins, Jesus still loves you. When your love slowly fades away from this earth, and the dirt embraces you, Jesus still loves you. God's love is more than father, mother, friend, or anyone else could love you, even more than you can love yourself... because God is love, and his promises to you are unbreakable, even into eternal life.

"Watch and Pray for His Coming" Advent Midweek 2 2021
As Jesus says, “But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” Even in the midst of the dire warnings, the threatening judgment, and the vigilance of watching and praying, Jesus promises the Gospel of Jesus Christ crucified for our forgiveness and raised for our justification will go out before the day comes. And the new day of his full presence is coming, however, and then it will be sight. So in the midst of our confident faith in his promise, we look for the joy of his return and full presence among us and in the world that belongs to him. Because Jesus has loved us, we love him, and we long for him to return. It is as simple as that.

"The coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord" Advent 2 2021
Do you believe that Christ is your Savior? Then you are counted amongst the elect. Today, you receive God's promise that you are counted amongst His chosen people. You are baptized! You are forgiven! Eat my body and drink My blood for forgiveness, life, and salvation! Go in peace! God loves you in Christ from all eternity. What could be more secure than that? Nothing. Nothing could be more sure for you than the fact that God chose you in Christ as His today and always.

“Behold, the days are coming that I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness" Advent 1 2021
This is the message God has appointed me to proclaim to you today and to announce to the nations and kingdoms of this earth: “To root out and to pull down, To destroy and to throw down, To build and to plant” (Jer 1:10). So listen now, before it's too late. "Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. In a year of drought, it has no worries and never fails to bear fruit” (Jer 17:7-8).
