"You are forgiven! Peace Be With You!" Quasimodo Geniti 2022
Jesus hasn’t stopped breathing the Spirit upon all of selfish, rebellious humanity. He breathed the Spirit upon you in your Baptism. The Spirit continues to breathe on you, the once slain but now alive army of God. The Spirit gives you to listen to Jesus, to hear His Word, and receive the gifts that Word gives. Jesus tells you to touch His flesh in the Holy Sacrament. He gives you to hunger and thirst for His righteousness, drinking deeply from the well of His forgiveness. “Peace be with you” is proclaimed to you in the forgiveness of sins in His body and blood of His Supper.

"Have all of Jesus" - The Resurrection of Our Lord - April 17, 2022
You either have all of Jesus or you have none of Him at all. The resurrection witnesses knew what they had shared. The accusation that they had made it all up they could endure. And they had to face persecution, they were beaten, crucified, and stoned. Why would they do that for a lie, a hoax, or even under some mass delusion. But they could not be silenced. St. Peter and John themselves confessed before the Sanhedrin, "For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:20)

“Free among the dead" Good Friday Tenebrœ 2022
This Lententide, we have been learning to lament from the Psalms. Our final Psalm is possibly the most difficult to pray. It is arguably the darkest. It even stands among the most somber compositions in all of Holy Scripture, comparable to the overcast pages of Job and Ecclesiastes. It’s hard to imagine how to reconcile such dark tones with evangelical hope. The Gospel must predominate in Christian preaching, even on this night as Christ lay dead in the tomb. Some might even think the sentiments of this psalm too dismal for it to serve as a Christian prayer at all. The hymnal committee saw no place for it in Lutheran worship and left it out.

"A clean conscience is yours!" Good Friday Chief Service 2022
Moses and the Prophets preached to reform their conscience, call them to repentance, and amend their life. But they refused to listen and double-downed in error and foolishness. That’s why they enlisted the help of Rome and stirred up a mob of people with bad consciences to cry out for Jesus’ death. They “shot the messenger” and crucified Jesus.

"When you listen to the Words of Institution, listen real close" Holy Thursday 2022
God is only present for you where Jesus' body is presented to you. God goes so deep into the flesh that he gives his weight to sinful men and women, boys and girls with such reckless, loving abandon that you're embarrassed for him. His love is so great that He lays down His life for you, offering that divine love and life to even you. He lays His body and blood down on this altar abundantly and without a hint of frugality for you to receive as your manna in the wilderness, or the Passover Lamb roasted over the fire of God’s wrath, giving you escape.

“His disciples did not understand these things at first" Palmarum 2022
Have some sympathy for the disciples, the women, the crowds, and even the religious and political leaders responsible for abandoning, mocking, condemning, and crucifying Jesus. You have the benefit of the 40,000 view, where he can see from horizon to horizon, from Adam to the new Adam, from Creation to the New Heavens and New Earth. But at the moment, it was hard to make sense of it all, even if you knew the Scriptures as intimately as the disciples did.

"Naming our enemies as we pray against them" Lent 5 Midweek 2022
Don’t be afraid to speak directly and clearly to God in prayer. Name your enemies. And if you’re wrong and they will be converted, thanks be to God. Pray God to defeat them and repent them. And if not, pray that He destroy them. Your life and faith depend on Him ending the foul reign of enemies physically and spiritually.

"The Gospel is the power of God that saves all who believe in Him" Judica 2022
Be honest with yourself. Jesus is offensive. He says things you don’t like. He tells you to do something you don’t want to do. Each time you come to church, you hope this is the Sunday you get by without Him noticing you and your sin. You have a good thing going, and you don’t want Jesus to upend your day, week, or year. You don’t want Him to expose your lust for power and endless pursuit of wealth. But even worse, you don’t want Him exposing your lies and your following after liars. You prefer the out-of-context Bible verse memes to deep study. You choose the easy to the difficult, the life of “I’m okay” to the life of “I’m a poor, miserable sinner.” But here you are. And here Jesus speaks. And in His speaking, He exposes you for the fraud that you are according to the flesh. But that’s not His last Word, and that’s not what He calls you. In Baptism, He no longer sees you as anything but His forgiven brother, a coheir of heaven, and a child of God. And as Karson, so for you, too. You have the Holy Spirit who repents you daily, coverts you again, restores you to faithfulness, and gives you to live in Christ today and always.

"Restore us, O God of hosts; Cause Your face to shine, And we shall be saved!” Lent 4 Midweek 2022
The situation in Psalm 80 is pretty rough. The problem in this psalm is not private, so to speak; it has to do with afflictions brought upon the Church. Asaph, the Psalmist, describes in vivid detail the common experience of the Christian congregation. She is often given to be in contention with her neighbors. Those who hate her seek her ruin and destruction. Worse yet, it seems that the good planting of God is now being broken down by God Himself. It seems that she’s being plundered by the world and false faiths around her. The remedy we ask against this plight is the revelation of God's glory, a theme that appears early in our psalm: “You who sit upon the Cherubim, reveal Yourself to Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh; stir up Your might and come to save us." Then, three times comes the refrain that makes the same prayer: "Restore us, O God of hosts; Cause Your face to shine, And we shall be saved!” This is the desperate plea of the Church which is assaulted within and without and is doubting the perseverance God has promised.

"On the mountain, Jesus has gathered His church" Laetare 2022
This world is a wilderness of despair, hopelessness, and need. It is governed by power and greed, poverty and want. This world is governed by laws of economics, like supply and demand. But the communion of the saints of God, His holy church has no scarcity, but She lives in the abundance of the Gospel. You have been gathered today to God’s holy mountain Zion. Here you are given to sit down in green pastures. You are fed with bread from heaven, God’s Word, and feast at the Holy Supper of the Lamb. So great a number surrounds you, an assembly of God’s holy people too great to even number. Not even 12 x 12 x 1000 is enough to describe the saints and angels with you this day. And you are filled with good things, Christ’s forgiveness, and drink from a well that springs to eternal life. There’s always enough and even more.
