"The deliberate vigil of a man who is fighting sleep" Lent 3 Midweek 2022
As the church prayed for Peter, chained in prison by Herod, the afflicted and saddened church spent that night remembering the God who brought forth His people from the oppression and bondage of Pharaoh and thus inspired she prayed for the renewal of God's wonders. Even today, the church gathers on the night that begins the Paschal feast for the Easter Vigil. Like the church of Acts, we continue to keep vigil in readings, psalms, and prayers. We celebrate our deliverance through Red Sea waters in our Baptism and our Passover lamb, Christ’s body, and blood.

"A real battle, not some pre-modern myth" Oculi 2022
Is it more reasonable not to believe that there is a devil? Whence then comes all the evil in the world? From whence comes all that really deserves to be called diabolical and satanic? How can people act as they do? And who knows more about these things than Jesus? Jesus says of His cross, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” And, “Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.”

"The Light of the World who rescues us from the chaos, the darkness, the void" Lent 2 Midweek 2022
As Asaph laments, however, he remembers that the very act of Creation was a deed of deliverance. Making things from nothing, the Lord did battle. Nothingness is not neutral. Existence is not natural to nothingness. Nihilism rejects all reality as without meaning and purpose, neither created nor formed. That’s the religion of the post-modern man, confessing that we have killed God, and with His death His Word has been silenced. But that is a lie. The most ardent nihilist believer in nothing will question why live at all.

"Jesus speaking and you listening is not child’s play" Reminiscere 2022
Jesus’ interaction with the Syro-Phoenecian woman is a lovely picture of how He interacts with you. What He spoke was as much for her and His disciples as it is for you. In the struggle between what you experience and what He says, Jesus builds trust. He exposes truths that the sinner hates. He ruins misplaced beliefs and false hopes. He devastates selfish esteem and pride. Anything and anyone who gets in His way to saving you are leveled and destroyed. Jesus doesn’t want trust that falters when you don’t get the answer you want right away. He doesn’t want trust that is dependent on your legacy or ancestry. He doesn’t want trust that claims to deserve or have earned His favor. These are the categories of false hope that talking heads, actors, and puppets wish you to believe. Sit at His feet, listen to what He says, and do whatever He tells you.

"The Holy Spirit leads you or even drives you to gather today" Invocavit 2022
Being baptized, you can call a sin, death, evil, and demonic possession what they are. You don’t have to hide them. You can’t ignore them. You see them and you can’t unsee them. Once Jesus has opened your eyes to see what was once hidden, you won’t be able to ignore these mortal enemies anymore. You can try but it will lead you only into misery, shame, and despair. Or you can follow Christ Jesus into the battle fray, armed to the teeth and shielded with the impenetrable armor of His Word and faith. That’s where the Spirit is leading you and even driving you: acknowledging your sin, renouncing the world, and rebuking the Evil One and all his fallen host.

"First comes the Word, and we see through hearing" Quinquagesima 2022
(The Sunday on the Way to Jerusalem) - February 27, 2022 Blind Bartimaeus is the prototypical example. First comes the Word, then the confession of faith, and then the seeing. “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Blind Bart knows the Scriptures and the promises of God attached to the Messiah-King after David. So, in faith worked by the Spirit, he confesses the truth when Jesus comes near. He can’t see Jesus but trusts Him anyway because He has the Word of promise. And confessing Jesus, He receives what Jesus alone can give: “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.”

"Jesus never stops sowing His sweet Word of forgiveness" Sexagesima 2022
That which is different about God's word, as over against all human words, is its authority. God’s Word does what it says. And He often gives others to speak with His authority, so He acted also through the prophetic word. He sent his word forth in the mouths of the holy prophets to "pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.” (Jeremiah 1:10) It is written that the Lord “has sent a word against Jacob" and that, "it will light upon Israel.” (Isaiah 9:8) When God speaks, His purpose and motive is clear. He tears down whatever is getting in the way of faith in Him. He builds and plants trust in Him which receives forgiveness in Jesus.
