S2 Ep 9090. Pathologizing Normal, with Natalie Wilson and Raphael Bender

E

Many, possibly most of the things we think of as “dysfunctions” in Pilates are in fact just normal variations. Things like:Anterior pelvic tiltRounded shouldersAsymmetrical range of motionare highly prevalent in pain-free people and do not predict injury. In fact, 80% of pain-free people have anterior pelvic tilt; so is it really a “tilt” or is it just the shape of the human pelvis?Even hypermobility & scoliosis are arguably not the cause of pain, or increased pain, and don’t need to be (nor can they be) “corrected” or “protected” by exercise.Raph and Natalie talk through:What is the evidence that these things are not pathologies? Why do we pathologize normal? What should we do instead?Resources mentioned in the episode:80% of pain-free people have anterior pelvic tilt hereAnterior pelvic tilt is not related to hip muscle tightness or strength hereSurgery is not more effective than exercise for hip impingement and labral tears hereSubacromial decompression for shoulder impingement is 100% placebo hereIn fact ALL surgeries for musculoskeletal pain are not better than placebo hereEarly MRI causes harm here and the value of MRI for musculoskeletal pain results in more harm than benefit hereStabilization exercise works better if you THINK your back is unstable hereThere is very weak correlation between scoliosis curve magnitude and back pain here and herePain in hypermobile people is not related to joint angle here but is more likely a result of higher pain sensitivity of the central nervous system hereCurrent ACSM guidelines hereConnect with me on Instagram: @the_raphaelbenderDownload a free course guide:Pilates CertificationVisualized AnatomyBecome a Breathe Education Mentor Affiliate: Program infoMentioned in this episode:Get 1:1 coaching with me to grow your studioGet 1:1 coaching with me to grow your studioThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: AdBarker - https://adbarker.com/privacy

S2 Ep 8282. How bodybuilding has influenced Pilates, with Aden O’Sullivan and Raphael Bender

E

We’ve often talked about the influence of dance in Pilates, but the influence of bodybuilding is also important - in fact, it’s so pervasive it’s invisible. Many of the things we take for granted in Pilates in fact are just bodybuilding conventions, not facts of exercise science, and they certainly weren’t part of Joseph Pilates’ original vision.Things like:Isolating musclesThinking about aesthetics as the primary goal of exerciseWorking to fatigue and seeking the burnOvercomplicating our programmingAre all bodybuilding practices, not laws of physics.Resources mentioned in the episode:Strength is Specific book by Chris Beardsley herePumping Iron movie here Intrinsic motivation for exercise is healthier and more sustainable hereHip stance doesn’t affect quad recruitment in a squat hereFemales tend to select loads that are too light to stimulate strength gains here and here--------------------------------About Aden O'SullivanAden is the Co-owner of The Fit Space Australia. S2 Ep 8181. How to help people AND make money, with Dan Baker and Raphael Bender

E

Many people in the Pilates world, and in the movement world, in general, believe you should charge a “fair” price for your services, and that making too much money is a sign you’re doing something morally reprehensible, and that those ill-gotten profits must come at the expense of your poor clients.Quite the reverse is true in Dan’s case and, we argue, in just about all cases. Making lots of profit is not mutually exclusive with profoundly helping people. You can do both. Dan is living proof. In fact, Dan shares his formula for hitting 25% net profit on a $250k annual turnover. That’s AFTER he pays himself. If you have a Pilates studio, listening to this episode will teach you how to increase your profits by $50k THIS YEAR.Resources mentioned in the episode:How to generate more profit in your Pilates business by adding more reformers here--------------------------------------About Dan Baker:Dan Baker is a Breathe Education trainer and owner of “Pilates with Dan” in Canberra.
