Rewatching the USC win over LSU and looking ahead to Utah State
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio taking a look back at USC's incredible season opening win over LSU in Las Vegas. In the days after the victory the guys have been able to rewatch the game plus hear from Lincoln Riley on Trojans Live and following Tuesday's practice. On the show they share their thoughts on what else they have learned since coming back from Las Vegas. Going into the game the guys talked about the defense needing to get better and the offense needing to not take a step back with the departure of Caleb Williams. Coming out of it they talk about what they liked about this Trojan offense, defense and special teams and what they saw that could be areas of concern going forward into the Big Ten schedule. The celebration on the field was glorious, but after a day off the Trojans were back to work getting ready for Utah State on a short week. Riley talked about the challenges of getting the team ready with one less day of preparation and how there were areas USC needed to get better in to build on that LSU victory. Ryan and Connor talk discuss what they know about the Aggies and if there is any concern about a post-victory "hangover" Saturday night in the Coliseum. Helium Boys: Trojans win Vegas Kickoff Classic in electric battle with LSU
The Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football prodcast, returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino breaking down USC's 27-20 victory in the final seconds of the Vegas Kickoff Classic over No. 13 LSU and look forward to this week's matchup against Utah State. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill.' Chris compares the atmosphere at Allegiant Stadium and the gameplay between two good teams to a College Football Playoff game while Shotgun talks about how quickly the game seemed to flash by with so many quality plays being made similarly to the previous CFP game he's covered -- the 2018 Rose Bowl between a Lincoln Riley-led Oklahoma team that fell to Georgia in overtime -- but he points out how that game ended with more than 100 points being scored compared to basically half of that output Sunday night. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their stocks in Stock Up/Stock Down looking at what players or elements were elevated or took a hit based on initial expectations. Chris mentions the improved special teams efforts that helped flip the field for USC while Shotgun brings up how preconceived notions of this team and its ceiling this season have to be thrown out after the way Miller Moss connected with his playmakers and the defense showed it's on a completely different level than it has been in recent years. Both Helium Boys also show some love for the tight ends and talk about the amount of joy being had by both players and fans in cardinal and gold. After a break, the podcast duo look forward to the Trojans' home opener this week previewing the key storyline, player and matchup for the Utah State game. The Helium Boys also answer your mailbag questions primarily about the defensive play calling of D'Anton Lynn with some mention of recruiting and what the win over LSU means for the Trojans' future. The episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its around rankings and player performances. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Re-ranking USCfootball.com's Top 30 Most Important Trojans for 2024
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back together for a special behind-the-scenes edition of the Helium Boys Podcast. The Helium Boys work through the process of compiling and debating a post-fall camp re-rank of USCfootball.com's Top 30 Most Important Trojans' list. For the last five seasons, the USCfootball.com staff has counted down the Top 30 Most Important Trojans in a series of offseason articles leading up to the kickoff of fall camp. Each year under Lincoln Riley, the USC roster has seen significant turnover each year making it a bit of a guessing game trying to figure our who is going to play and how valuable they are going to be toward the team's success, so we've incorporated a re-rank when the Trojans' football team makes the transition from fall camp to game preparation in the week leading up to the season opener. Each USCfootball.com staff member submits his own list of whom he/she believes will be the most important Trojans. Considerations for the rankings take in a wide range of factors including positional depth, 2023 stats, overall talent, departures from the previous season, projected development and expectations. The only guidance we try to follow is that the most important factor for placement is if this particular player was lost for the season, how detrimental would it be to the team and the overall success of the season. The individual lists are submitted and compiled before Shotgun and Chris come together to sift through the information, debate and assemble the official USCfootball.com rankings. In this podcast, the Helium Boys give you a peek behind the curtain, allowing you to listen in on the re-rankings discussion as we sift, sort and come up with the final preseason rankings. The re-rank includes several risers on the defensive side of the ball, including Gavin Meyer and Anthony Lucas, as well as players whose importance declined whether through an inability to lock up a starting role or the emergence of other players. Tunnel Vision: Previewing the No. 23 USC Trojans and the No. 13 LSU Tigers in Las Vegas
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are finally back in studio to give a detailed preview of USC's first game of the 2024 college football season, a neutral site matchup against the No. 13 LSU Tigers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. All three hosts (along with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino) will be in Vegas for the game and they are excited as anyone to watch and talk about real football after a long off-season of quiet rebuilding for the Trojans. There is a lot of doubt about this USC squad that needs to replace Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams and somehow get significantly better on defense, but head coach Lincoln Riley made a lot of moves, including a stacked defensive staff, and he appears to be ready to jump in and make the first year in the Big Ten a successful one. The guys talk about some of those improvements that were made and how that can help USC get off to a fast start to the season with a potential win over a top-15 opponent from the SEC. They also discuss what they know about the Tigers, who have a lot of similarities to the Trojans, having to replace a Heisman winner and make vast improvements on the defensive side of the ball. Helium Boys: LSU vs. USC preview, key matchups in Las Vegas
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino reunite for the Helium Boys Podcast to discuss the gloriousness that is the return of college football with No. 23 USC set to take on No. 13 LSU in the Modelo Vegas Kickoff Classic Sunday at Allegiant Stadium (4:30 p.m. PST; ABC). The Helium Boys preview the 2024 season and the opener against the Bayou Bengals with a new format as well as bringing back a couple of favorite segments from podcasts past Take It or Leave It and the Overtime period. They also answer your questions. But the episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill,' which takes on new meaning this season in college football with the implementation of a two-minute warning stoppage. Shotgun makes sure to get in a quick run of Stock Ups heading into the season during his two minutes while Chris initially has to wait to get the call in his headset as he mimics the new technology that will be allowed on the field for the first time in college football this season. Chris and Shotgun then dive into the approaching season opener and the opportunity that it is for both the Trojans and the Tigers -- two programs that enter as nearly mirror images as the similarities range up and down the gamut of storylines heading into the first game. They look at the key storyline as well as the player that could be a difference maker and the matchup that could determine the outcome. They also play a little 'fill in the blank' with the causation of a USC win and loss. After a break, Chris quizzes Shotgun with Take It or Leave It. The Helium Boys also answer your mailbag questions about a number of topics spanning from the defensive coordinator preferences and how to best assess preseason intrasquad scrimmages before a couple of Vegas themed inquiries. The episode concludes with the Overtime section focused on Olympic sports Chris wants Shotgun to make a determination on. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Helium Boys: Miller Moss named USC starting QB, other position battles & 2024 season Over/Under
The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino back behind the microphones to break down and react to Miller Moss being named the Trojans' starting quarterback after USC announced Lincoln Riley's decision Monday evening. The podcast also features an assessment of other notable position battles for the Trojans as they head into mock game week with the season opener less than two weeks away, and later in the episode, Chris breaks out the Over/Under betting lines to get Shotgun's feel on how the USC team will perform this season. This Helium Boys episode opens in a unique way as Shotgun is too excited about the impending college football season and skips right past the podcast staple opening 'Two-Minute Drill.' Instead the podcast duo jump right into the conversation about the impending season and Riley's decision to name his starting quarterback. Chris nearly gets pinned in the corner when thrown a potential comparison of this year's quarterback battle and decision with the one Clay Helton made in 2016 choosing Max Browne to start over Sam Darnold to open the season. Chris and Shotgun also break down some of the other position battles for the Trojans, including a couple like the right guard and inside linebacker spots that seem as if a decision may have already been made and a couple others on the defensive side that will continue at least for the next two weeks. After a break, Chris quizzes Shotgun with his Over/Under lines. The Helium Boys also answer your mailbag questions about recruiting, quarterbacks and the potential of the Trojans' offense this season. Ranking USCFootball.com's Top 30 Most Important Trojans of 2024, 21-30
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back together for a special behind-the-scenes edition of the Helium Boys Podcast. The Helium Boys work through the process of compiling and debating spots No. 21 through 30 as well as the First Five Out for the initial summer ranking of USCFootball.com's Top 30 Most Important Trojans' list for the 2024 season. For the fifth year in a row, the USCFootball.com staff is counting down the Top 30 Most Important Trojans in a series of offseason articles leading up to the kickoff of fall camp. The series is based off our staff's guesses on the development of returners as well as the value of newcomers as the Trojans' roster comes together after another offseason of turnover under head coach Lincoln Riley. Each USCFootball.com staff member submits his own list of whom he believes will be the most important Trojans. In this podcast, the Helium Boys give you a peek behind the curtain, allowing you to listen in on the first third of the rankings discussion as they debate and settle on the initial summer preseason rankings for No. 21 through No. 30 and the First Five Out (31-35). The USC Triple-Double Podcast returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) talking about the first look at USC men's basketball's completely new roster in action following a pair of practices open to the media. But first, an entertaining and enlightening conversation with new assistant coach Michael Musselman, who isn’t only entering his first year with the Trojans but also his first year as a full-time assistant after spending five years on staff at Arkansas in a variety of roles from director of recruiting to director of basketball operations. Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith return on the Dedeaux Download Podcast to wrap up the 2024 USC baseball season with Trojans' head coach Andy Stankiewicz joining the show to provide insights as we look back at a Trojans' season on the road with USC not having access to their home field on campus. Stankiewicz talks about the Trojans' pain of coming so close to a regional berth for the second year in a row and what he talked about with the players after the Pac-12 Tournament. He also discusses the building blocks the team continues to take as it tries to break through to the postseason and back into the national landscape. After talking with Stankiewicz, Shotgun and Jack take a look towards the future of the USC program. Step one is addressing the names that have already entered the transfer portal after the season's end. Eight rostered players are currently in the transfer portal including one name that caught Jack and Shotgun by surprise mid-recording: Jacob Galloway. After a strong sophomore campaign, the Trojans' stalwart catcher looks to potentially be on the move. To wrap up the episode, Spratling and Smith hand out their end-of-season awards while revisiting their preseason predictions (Hint: there were some incorrect picks). From best hitter and pitcher to most impactful newcomer and the what could've been award, Jack and Shotgun discuss some of the top individual performers and moments of the long season. Dedeaux Download: USC season ends in heartbreaking walk-off defeat in Pac-12 Tournament championship
Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith return on the Dedeaux Download Podcast to wrap up the Pac-12 Tournament, breaking down USC baseball's run to the championship game, battling to make the title game against regular-season champ Arizona. The Trojans needed a win to take the final Pac-12 title and the NCAA tournament automatic bid, but ultimately they ran out of gas, watching a 3-0 lead and a Caden Aoki no-hitter disappear in the final three innings before ultimately falling to the Wildcats on a walk-off winner that featured a bang-bang play at the plate. The Trojans got excellent starting pitching each of their four games, led by Aoki's masterpiece in the championship and William Watson earning himself some money with the best start of his short USC career. They fought through close games, rallying to beat Utah's career saves leader Micah Ashman before having to hold off Oregon and Cal with both getting late opportunities with the tying run at the plate. Shotgun and Jack break down all the action from the week in Scottsdale and take a brief look forward at what USC's final push this season will do for the program in the future. Dedeaux Download: Hot Trojans head to Pac-12 Tournament playing best baseball of season
Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith return on the Dedeaux Download Podcast to wrap up the regular season, breaking down USC baseball's sweep of Utah in the final weekend of the regular season to get above .500 for the first time this season while climbing to 17 Pac-12 Conference wins and the No. 4 seed in this week's Pac-12 Tournament. The Trojans got outstanding pitching all three games, led by the continued excellence of ace Caden Aoki, who threw four scoreless innings as he continues to work his way back to full strength after missing more than a month with a shoulder injury. Shotgun and Jack break down all the action from the weekend before previewing the Pac-12 Tournament, including chatting with USC head coach Andy Stankiewicz as he joins the show from a Scottsdale hotel room after the Trojans' six-hour bus ride. Stankiewicz talks about what the return of Aoki as well as Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek has meant for USC as it moved some other players back into more comfortable roles. He also discusses how things change going into the tournament in desperation win-or-go-home mode this season and what it means for the program to climb up to a fourth-place finish in the Pac-12 for the second year in a row. Dedeaux Download: USC baseball looks to gain momentum heading into Pac-12 Tournament
Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith return with another episode of the Dedeaux Download Podcast to break down the three-week period for USC baseball before the Trojans begin the final weekend of the regular season. During the three weeks, USC saw its at-large hopes officially dashed while going 6-6 with series losses at Arizona State and to California. The Trojans enter the final weekend carrying a three-game win streak after rallying to win a road series at Washington State and taking a midweek road game at Gonzaga. The 25-27 Trojans had been without ace Caden Aoki for a month, which really impacted their pitching, particularly the starting pitching. The weekend rotation has been in flux for most of the season due to performance and/or injuries, which has been one of the primary causes of USC floating around just below .500 rather than being able to ascend to their full potential. Shotgun and Jack break down all the action from the three-week stretch in their 'Three Up, Three Down' segment where they look at both the positives, including William Watson, the return of Aoki and the breakthrough of Ryan Jackson, as well as three negatives from the week, including a lack of come-from-behind success this season, Austin Overn going on a 3-for-33 slump and the Trojans not seeming to be able to pick each other up when a mistake is made. The podcasting duo also take a look at where USC stands, breaking down the Pac-12 standings where the Trojans enter the final weekend in sixth with a chance to climb potentially all the way to No. 3. To do that USC will need to sweep Utah in the Trojans' final home series of the season. Shotgun and Jack look forward to the upcoming action between USC and the Utes. The veteran from Mission Viejo comes to USC after three years as a Beaver where he played in 37 games and had 107 tackles, 6.5 for loss with two sacks and pair of interceptions for OSU last season. The Trojans are desperately looking for production out of the linebacker spot and the addition of Mascarenas-Arnold should go a long way towards that goal. The guys chat with him about the decision to join Lincoln Riley, D'Anton Lynn and Matt Entz on this new-look USC defense, coming to Los Angeles with his brother Akili Arnold, how he felt he performed during the 15 spring football practices, what he wants to improve on and what his goals are for his senior season. After the interview Ryan and Connor recap how the Trojans did in the NFL Draft with the first overall pick being Caleb Williams and six more former USC football players being selected. With seven overall selections the Trojans had the most of any program to finish the 2023 season unranked, a dubious distinction that Riley and company will try and rectify in 2024. The interview with Easton Mascarenas-Arnold was conducted in conjunction with House of Victory, an alumni-backed nonprofit collective dedicated to providing a competitive edge in the NIL space for University of Southern California student-athletes.
