The constantly changing world of NIL with states AGs now suing the NCAA

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio following up on their conversation with USC athletic director Jen Cohen about the Trojans NIL efforts. The guys talk about the current state of NIL for the Trojans and the ever changing landscape Cohen talked about in our interview, with the attorney generals from Virginia and Tennessee now suing the NCAA alleging that their restrictions on high school or NCAA Transfer Portal players receiving compensation from collectives is illegal. The NCAA has attempted to put "guardrails" around NIL compensation and players ability to transfer and every time it does the courts have got involved. This latest lawsuit would allow schools to use NIL as an inducement for recruits and transfers, a practice currently not allowed according to the NCAA. USC is one of the programs that has followed all of the NCAA rules when it comes to NIL compensation being used as an inducement in the recruiting process. If these lawsuits are successful and the NCAA drops the inducement rule, it would open up the door for the Trojans to attempt to play the same game some of their rivals are playing. The guys also talk about the Trojan football coaches hitting the recruiting trail hard with the new defensive staff really picking things up quickly. USC Triple-Double Podcast: Fiery Lindsay Gottlieb on Women of Troy bouncing back after lackluster showing

The USC Triple-Double Podcast returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) breaking down the Women of Troy's home split against the Washington schools where the Trojans looked good for a half, terrible for two halves, good for a quarter and then not good enough for a final quarter. They also look at USC men's basketball's trying to break free from a five-game losing streak. The Women of Troy remain slid four spots to No. 15 in the Associated Press top 25 poll after their loss to Washington. It is the lowest ranking for the Trojans since the first in-season poll was released. The struggles for the men's team continued as the Trojans lost the first iteration of the Crosstown Showdown to a UCLA team that has had similar woes as USC but seems to be improving as the stretch run of the season nears. Shotgun and Connor break down all the latest action for both teams, including looking closely at JuJu Watkins' shooting and efficiency, discussing the possibility of Isaiah Collier sitting out longer than anticipated and focusing the spotlight on Bronny James who did not start for the first time in three weeks with Boogie Ellis returning to the starting lineup. The podcasting duo also look at the positives and negatives of the recent USC basketball action from both squads and look forward to the next week to preview what lies ahead. For the men, they prepare the Galen Center for battles with Oregon and Oregon State, who both defeated the Trojans earlier this season, while the Women of Troy get ready for a huge road trip. USC women's head coach Lindsay Gottlieb joins the show to discuss the road trip to her old stomping grounds as the Trojans take on her former rival, Stanford and Tara VanDerveer, and her former squad at Cal, but more importantly, a fired-up Gottlieb discusses what the Women of Troy have to do to bounce back after a lackluster performance against Washington led to a disappointing loss. She discusses how the offense gets back on track and what the coaching staff is doing to monitor star freshman JuJu Watkins' usage levels. USC Triple-Double Podcast: Previewing rivalry matchup; assistant Kurt Karis talks about his rise from walk-on to Trojans coach

The USC Triple-Double Podcast returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) previewing USC men's basketball's upcoming rivalry game against UCLA this weekend and breaking down a tough road trip for the USC women's basketball, which lost back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Women of Troy slid out of the top 10 to No. 11 in the Associated Press top 25 poll after losing to No. 20 Utah and No. 3 Colorado on the road. The disappointing campaign for the men's team continued with the Trojans losing their fourth game in a row, falling at Arizona State after turning the ball over 22 times in the game, including 15 times in the first half -- the most by any Power Five team in any half this season. Shotgun and Connor break down all the latest action for both teams, including looking closely at JuJu Watkins and her fouling out with 5:50 remaining at Colorado, focusing the spotlight on Bronny James and looking at exactly where the Trojans stand statistically and in the standings. The podcasting duo also look at the positives and negatives of the recent USC basketball action from both squads and look forward to the next week to preview what lies ahead. For the men, they prepare for the Galen Center iteration of the Crosstown Showdown against UCLA while the Women of Troy host Washington and Washington State. USC men's assistant coach Kurt Karis also joins the show to discuss the Crosstown Showdown rivalry and his favorite moments going against the baby blues during his nine years with the Trojans. USC Triple-Double Podcast: Assistant Courtney Jaco joins the show after Women of Troy knock off No. 2 UCLA

The USC Triple-Double Podcast returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) breaking down the Women of Troy's big rivalry win over UCLA in a top 10 matchup at a sold out Galen Center and looking at the recent skid of a banged-up men's team. The Women of Troy remain jumped up to No. 6 in the Associated Press top 25 poll after their big Crosstown Showdown victory, but have no time to rest on their laurels with another huge Pac-12 week coming up. The cursed season for the men's team continued as the Trojans followed their first winning streak since November with more injuries and more losses, dropping three starters and three straight games. Shotgun and Connor break down all the latest action for both teams, including looking closely at former No. 1 overall recruits JuJu Watkins and Isaiah Collier, focusing the spotlight on Bronny James and looking at exactly where the Trojans stand statistically and in the standings. The podcasting duo also look at the positives and negatives of the recent USC basketball action from both squads and look forward to the next week to preview what lies ahead. For the men, they complete their three-game stretch away from home this weekend when they take on Arizona State while the Women of Troy prepare for the second-toughest road trip in the Pac-12 this season, going to No. 20 Utah and No. 3 Colorado. USC women's assistant coach Courtney Jaco also joins the show to discuss the Crosstown Showdown win and what the Trojans improved upon to be able to take the victory in the second matchup against the No. 2 Bruins in two weeks. Jaco talks about her experience this season watching the interest in the team grow, culminating in Sunday's packed house at Galen where she couldn't even communicate with the players on the court at times. USC's career three-point percentage leader also chats about what advice she gives shooters when they get into a slump. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! USC Triple-Double Podcast: Assistant Jay Morris joins the show after recent surge for Trojan men; Women of Troy prepare for rematch with UCLA

The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the first basketball-only podcast to be a part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows -- returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) breaking down an undefeated week for the USC men's and women's basketball teams. USC men's assistant coach Jay Morris joins the show to discuss what has led to the Trojans' recent surge and what they will have to do to continue playing well. He also discusses his path to becoming an assistant at USC and how his Southern California roots are used on the recruiting trail. The Women of Troy remain ranked No. 9 after a pair of wins over the Oregon schools last week. They were able to hold off three last-second attempts from Oregon State to win 56-54, handing the Beavers their first loss of the season, and then USC was able to finish on an 18-5 run against Oregon to pull away for a 14-point win. The men's team has its first winning streak since November after defeating both of the Bay Area schools last week at the Galen Center. The Trojans played some of their best offensive basketball of their season, sharing the basketball for high assist totals whilst rarely turning the ball over. Coincidentally, Kobe Johnson and Isaiah Collier seemed to break out of some winter malaise that had struck both guards. For the men, they complete their three-game home swing on Wednesday against Washington State before taking off on a potentially make-or-break road trip to Colorado and the Arizona schools while the Women of Troy prepare for their Sunday rematch with the No. 2 UCLA two weeks after falling to the Bruins at Pauley Pavilion. Helium Boys: USC 2023 season awards, Jonah Monheim and Golden Globes

The Helium Boys Podcast is back once more with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino returning behind the mics to wrap up the 2023 USC football season with end-of-season awards following the Trojans' 8-5 campaign that started with so much promise and a 6-0 start before a stunning decline in the second half of the season saw them lose five of six to end the regular season. Before getting to the 2023 honorees, the episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' as each Helium Boy goes off the cuff for two minutes about the national championship game after Michigan was able to defeat Washington in the College Football Playoff finale to conclude the 2023 college football season. The duo then discusses the biggest news of the week for the Trojans as fourth-year junior offensive lineman Jonah Monheim is set to return to USC after having thoughts and considerations about entering the pool of 2024 NFL Draft talents. They break down what Monheim's return means for the offensive line in 2024 and why that gives offensive line coach Josh Henson a lot more options. The Helium Boys then wrap up the 2023 season with the end-of-season awards labeling not only the MVP and offensive/defensive players of the year but also the top freshman, lineman, coach and a number of other categories of season superlatives. Shotgun and Chris also answer your questions from Twitter discussing the cornerback group the Trojans will have during the 2024 season, college football video games, alien encounters and the Trojans' early enrollees that just arrived on campus this week. USC Triple-Double Podcast: Women of Troy suffer first loss; Trojan men at critical juncture

The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the first basketball-only podcast to be a part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows -- returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) breaking down the the last couple of weeks action from the USC men's and women's basketball teams. The Women of Troy are ranked No. 9 after suffering their first loss of the season, having too many cold stretches against No. 2 UCLA in the first iteration of the Crosstown Showdown this season. The Trojans entered the game undefeated despite missing multiple key players each of the previous couple of games. The men's team has finally got to full strength with the addition of Bronny James back to the mix after he missed the team's first eight games as he continued to recover and rehab following a cardiac arrest this summer. However, the addition of James hasn't been an automatic fix for the ills of the 7-7 Trojans. Shotgun and Connor break down all the latest action for both teams, including the impact James has made as he shakes off the rust, before looking at where the Trojan squads stand both record and stat wise through the first two months of the season. The podcasting duo also look at the positives and negatives of the recent USC basketball action from both squads and look forward to the next week to preview what lies ahead. Helium Boys: Miller Moss & Holiday Bowl, nicknames and Pop Tarts

The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino behind the microphones to break down and react to USC's stunning showing in a 42-28 win over No. 16 Louisville in the Holiday Bowl for its final game as a Pac-12 team. The episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' as each Helium Boy gives his initial reactions to the Trojans' win over the Cardinals and the biggest things that stood out, including the momentum the program suddenly has heading into the offseason. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who/what impressed, including Miller Moss' outstanding play and how it changes the narrative for the remainder of the offseason. But Moss wasn't the only one impressing as USC's young receivers shined while veterans got to go out with accolades and a victory. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit, such as some 2024 concerns and opponent's yards after contact thanks to some terrific open-field tackling by the Trojans in San Diego The Helium Boys also answer your questions from Twitter discussing why the coaching staff chose not to go all in on some freshmen in the bowl game, the best way to handle the quarterback position for the 2024 season and USC's NIL strategy among other topics. They also break down the merits of an elevated role for the Pop Tarts Bowl mascot in the grand bowl season scheme. Tunnel Vision: Trojans end season on a Holiday High thanks to Miller Moss and his 6 touchdown passes

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham is in studio joined remotely by Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette talking about USC's huge Holiday Bowl win over Louisville with offensive MVP Miller Moss setting a Trojan bowl record with six touchdown passes in the 42-28 victory. With only 52 scholarship players available due to the transfer portal and opt-outs, Lincoln Riley's crew played one of their better games of the season, blocking well, tackling better and airing the ball out with Moss and a host of mostly young receivers. The Trojans scored 42 points on just 52 plays and Moss lit it up completing 23 of his 33 attempts for 372 passing yards, 6 touchdowns and one interception. Tahj Washington in his final game in a USC uniform went over 1,000 yards for the season with his 7 catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns. Freshmen receiver Ja'Kobi Lane had 3 catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns and Kyron Hudson and Duce Robinson each had a touchdown grab. With a secondary that only had 7 scholarship players suited up, Jaylin Smith moved from nickel to safety and ranked up a team high 12 tackles (all solo) and the Holiday Bowl defensive MVP. Helium Boys: Breaking down a hectic USC stretch of transfers, commitments and coaching additions

The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino behind the microphones as USC continues to get ready for next week's Holiday Bowl. But that seems ages away during this time of year when news stories are popping off multiple times every day with the Trojans' roster being overturned with high school and transfer commitments as well as de-commitments, players entering their names into the NCAA transfer portal and coaches on the move in both directions. Shotgun and Chris break down all the latest happenings around the land of Troy with the transfer portal open, the Early Signing Period opening this week and the coaching carousel in full swing. The Helium Boys episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' with each Helium Boy being given the freedom to go in any direction, and they choose to look at the big picture of how hectic the month of December is for the players and coaching staffs that are living the overturned rosters and coaching staffs. The podcasting duo follow with a look at the recent high school recruiting commitment additions, topped off by the recent commitment of four-star Bay Cities (Texas) four-star defensive lineman Carlon Jones. The Helium Boys also discuss the additions of Oregon State transfers Akili Arnold and his brother Easton Mascarenas-Arnold and break down what the departures of Mario Williams, Michael Tarquin, Malachi Nelson, Domani Jackson and Tackett Curtis mean for the Trojans, the Holiday Bowl depth chart and the 2024 roster. After the break, Shotgun and Chris take a look at Donte Williams' move to Georgia and the immediate USC hire of Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk to be the secondary coach for the Trojans. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter discussing who could become WR1 next season for USC, if certain actions show us Lincoln Riley is evolving how he will attack with his playcalling and the impact of NIL on the game of college football. Coach Harvey Hyde on USC's defensive staff hires and major transfer portal additions and departures

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about all of the latest news and notes surrounding the USC football program. It's mid December and the Trojan football team is gearing up for an important Holiday Bowl clash with Louisville from the ACC, but right now most of the focus is on the future with major changes happening to both the coaching staff and the roster. After head coach Lincoln Riley fired defensive coordinator Alex Grinch with two games left in the regular season, the writing was on the wall that this defensive staff was going to get a major makeover. Riley started off with the bold move to hire UCLA DC D'Anton Lynn to come down the 10 Freeway and take over as USC's defensive coordinator. Next Riley targeted Matt Entz, the head coach of North Dakota State who won multiple national championships at the FCS level, to coach linebackers. The latest move was to snag Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk to join the staff and coach the Trojans secondary, taking the place of Donte Williams who is heading to Georgia for the same role. Coach Hyde gives his thoughts on all of these additions to the staff and if he feels these coaches could help make the Trojans a contender heading into the Big Ten next season. There have also been some major attrition on the roster heading into the bowl game with former five-stars like quarterback Malachi Nelson, running back Raleek Brown and cornerback Domani Jackson entering the NCAA Transfer Portal. With Nelson in the portal Riley needs to bring in a quarterback and right now the favorite in the clubhouse appears to be Will Howard from Kansas State, who took an official visit to USC over the weekend. The Trojans also added former Oregon State safety Akili Arnold and linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold to the roster along with Vanderbilt defensive lineman Nate Clifton. Coach Hyde says they need to take the bowl game seriously to end the season on a high note, unlike what happened last year. With opt-outs and transfers, Hyde really wants team players out there who can put the team first so they can play like hell and get a much needed victory. He's also very happy for Miller Moss getting his first start. Moss has been loyal Trojan, he wants to be at USC and deserves this start. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! But first, a special guest joins the show as USC women’s head coach Lindsay Gottlieb comes on to discuss the Trojans' 8-0 start and how they are trying to practice with an eye toward the future as they face off with some lighter opponents than what they will encounter in Pac-12 play. Gottlieb also talks about the impact the three Ivy League grad transfers -- Kayla Padilla, McKenzie Forbes and Kaitlyn Davis -- have had while seamlessly transitioning into new roles than they may have had at their former schools. She also discusses JuJu Watkins' most impressive feat on the court so far this season. Shotgun and Connor then break down the debut of Bronny James, who finished with four points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block in 16 minutes in front of his father LeBron James and a packed Galen Center. The podcasting duo also look at the positives and negatives of the last week of USC basketball action from both squads and look forward to the next week to preview what lies ahead. For the men, they begin a four-game road swing that begins with a potentially make-or-break matchup at Auburn. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Discussing Lincoln Riley's defensive staff makeover as the transfer portal action heats up

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about what head coach Lincoln Riley is doing to upgrade his staff on the defensive side of the ball. Riley's first big move was to poach the defensive coordinator from crosstown rival UCLA, bringing over D'Anton Lynn to run the Trojans defense. Another power move by Riley was snagging North Dakota State head coach Matt Entz to be USC's linebacker coach and associate head coach for the defense. Entz has served as the Bison head coach since 2019, winning two national titles at the FCS level. The NCAA Transfer Portal is wide open and the action has been fast and furious. The guys talk about some of the players that have entered the portal from the USC side, the pickups made by the Trojans and what other players could be targets to improve this roster going forward. Bowl preparation is in full swing with the Trojans ready to face off against Louisville in the Holiday Bowl on December 27 in San Diego. There has only been one practice where players were made available but the guys talk about what new QB1 Miller Moss had to say heading into the game. They also talk about the new buzz around the USC basketball program with Bronny James making his debut in the Galen Center on Sunday. The Trojans fell in overtime to Long Beach State, however, spoiling what was an electric atmosphere with everyone coming out to see the son of the NBA's all-time scoring leader LeBron James play. Helium Boys Podcast: USC hires new LB coach Matt Entz, Holiday Bowl and shameless merch plugs

The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino behind the microphones as USC continues to get ready for the Holiday Bowl, which is now two weeks away. While the Trojans haven't taken the field for a game, that doesn't mean there hasn't been news in the jam-packed month of December with the transfer portal whirring in both directions across the nation, the Early Signing Period coming in a week, coaches on the move and players announcing their intentions to enter the NFL Draft and/or skip their teams' bowl game. Shotgun and Chris break down all the latest happenings around the land of Troy. The Helium Boys episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' with each Helium Boy being given the freedom to go in any direction. Shotgun leads off with the power move of USC hiring away North Dakota State national champion head coach Matt Entz to be its linebacker coach. In the holiday spirit (or because of his slowly recovering vocal cords), Shotgun evens does the improbable and 'gifts' some of his two minutes to his podcasting partner. Chris goes down a different avenue with his two minutes, discussing The Peristyle Shop and the latest addition, Helium Boys merchandise. The podcasting duo follow with a deeper look at the hire of Entz and what it means for the Trojans and the defensive staff going forward. They lay out how it is a beneficial situation for everyone involved and contemplate the culture shock of the move from Fargo, ND to Los Angeles, CA for the Entz family. The Helium Boys then discuss the upcoming Holiday Bowl and debate how the coaching staff should/will approach the game with stars like Caleb Williams, Brenden Rice and MarShawn Lloyd already declaring for the draft and/or announcing their intentions to skip the bowl game. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter discussing how much the USC defense could improve in 2024 under D'Anton Lynn as well as what staff will be helping him try to achieve those improvements. They also answer transfer portal questions, including who better fits for USC: Cam Ward or Will Howard? Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the first basketball-only podcast to be a part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows -- returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) breaking down the most recent action from the USC men's and women's basketball teams as well as taking a deep dive assessment of the men's team after the Trojans fell to 5-3 on the season. The undefeated Women of Troy remain ranked No. 6 this week after obliterating another mid-major opponent. The men's team is currently on an opposite trajectory having lost two of its last three games, including a lackluster performance in a marquee non-conference matchup against No. 11 Gonzaga in Las Vegas. The Trojans lost by 13 points despite shooting 47 percent and having only 10 turnovers. It wasn't enough to overcome a 15-2 deficit to open the game and a defensive effort that saw the Bulldogs shoot 52.3 percent. Shotgun and Connor break down both games from last week before looking at where the Trojan squads stand both record and stat wise through the first month or so of the season. The podcasting duo then turns things over to the fans, allowing them to ask questions about the Trojans and what seems to be holding the men's team back, including what head coach Andy Enfield had to say about the team's deficiencies in an exclusive interview with USCFootball.com. Helium Boys: USC's fizzles in UCLA rivalry, defensive coordinator search and Pop Tart rankings

The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino back behind the microphones to react to USC's abysmal showing in a 38-20 rivalry loss to UCLA in the Trojans final Pac-12 game. Over 108 minutes, the Helium Boys break down the lackluster showing in the Crosstown Showdown that left them feeling like parents that are more disappointed than angry after a child's misdeeds and left the Trojans with a 7-5 record. The Helium Boys episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' as each gives his initial reactions to the Trojans' loss to UCLA and the biggest things that stood out, including the continuation of the same story that has been seen throughout the season with an additional subplot of constantly giving the ball back to UCLA. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who/what impressed, including Brenden Rice playing angry and collecting his fifth career 100-yard game, freshman defensive lineman Elijah Hughes getting his most extended run of the season and the Superman efforts of Caleb Williams that we've likely seen for the last time in cardinal and gold. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend with USC continuing to have tackling woes on defense and struggling to block up front on the offensive side. Shotgun also poses the question to Chris of which offseason slogan was the worst between the 2012 team's "Prep, Not Hype" and 2023's "The longer it goes, the better we get." They also get diverted and go down a rabbit hole on the Pop Tart Bowl and end up having to present their favorite flavors. Throughout the show, Chris and Shotgun also look forward at USC's impending hire of a defensive coordinator and some of the things the new coach is going to have to address immediately. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter and Instagram discussing areas/players where USC regressed, how the transfer portal will reshape the Trojans' roster this offseason, preferred offensive systems and whether Jim Leonhard could be "Grinch-like." They also break down their three favorite holidays. Coach Harvey Hyde says the party is over for USC and major changes are needed immediately

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC's 38-20 loss to UCLA in the Coliseum, closing out what was a once promising college football season in the most disappointing way possible. The Trojans were preseason ranked No. 5 and started off winning their first six games and didn't trail for the first five. Since then USC lost to both of its rivals in uncompetitive games, went 1-5 and once again sported one of the worst defenses in the country. There was great anticipation heading into the 2023 college football season, but it ended up being very difficult to endure and ended on a terrible note with an uncompetitive loss to UCLA. Coach Hyde says the party's over now, Santa Claus didn’t bring any gifts and there is no easy way to make sense of it all. He feels major changes are needed and they are needed immediately, not just with the defensive coordinator but how the entire coaching staff is structured, how recruiting is handled, the overall football philosophy, the entire package. Losing to the Bruins and gaining only three rushing yards is inexcusable. It was the last chance for this team to have some positivity heading into the bowl game and while most Trojan fans anticipated a victory over this UCLA squad that had scored 17 points total in its last two games, that didn’t happen. No bragging rights. No Victory Bell. No momentum going into a bowl game. The defense obviously needs fixing but there are issues on offense and special teams as well. Coach feels the team was dominated on both lines and that is where football games are won, in the trenches. Caleb Williams is a special player but there was far too much pressure on him to succeed. He needs help from the line, the skill players and the coaching staff since he isn’t forced to do everything on his own. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Tunnel Vision: Trojans no-show against the Bruins to end the season on a dreadful 1-5 run

On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham and Jack Smith are back in studio trying to make sense of an absolute dreadful performance by the Trojans, falling to their rival Bruins 38-20 in a game where it appeared USC wasn't even interested in playing. UCLA had control from the get-go, taking an early 14-0 lead with USC turning it over on downs, punting, fumbling and throwing an interception on its first four possessions. After starting off the season No 5 in the country and getting out of the gates with a 6-0 start, the Trojans have lost five of their last six games and showed almost no signs of life in the two rivalry games against Notre Dame and UCLA. The USC defense has now allowed 419 points on the season, the most ever in Trojan football history. Once again they allowed opponents to hit high water marks with Ethan Garbers throwing his career high in touchdown passes (3) and T.J. Harden with his career high in rushing attempts and yards (22 for 142). It wasn't just the defense that cracked against UCLA, the offense only had three (3) rushing yards and three turnovers while the special teams missed a short field goal, had a kickoff out of bounds and took a bad penalty on a kickoff return that set up a UCLA touchdown. The guys talk about what a disappointing season it has been, if that was the last we've seen of Caleb Williams, where the Trojans could go bowling and lots more. USC Triple-Double: Lindsay Gottlieb talks JuJu Watkins, Trojan hoops' hot start & top 10 recruiting class

On the debut episode of the USC Triple-Double -- the first basketball-only podcast to be a part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows -- Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) break down the hot starts of the Trojans' men's and women's basketball teams on the debut episode of the USC Triple-Double Podcast. Both USC hoops squads are ranked with the Women of Troy coming in at No. 10 this week, earning their first top 10 ranking in nearly 30 years, while the men were ranked No. 16 after a 2-0 start to the season but are likely to slide in the next rankings release after losing to UC Irvine, 70-60, on Tuesday. But that loss came with some extenuating circumstances, which the triple-double team break down. But first, a special guest joins the show as USC women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb comes on to talk about her fabulous freshman sensation JuJu Watkins, who is fourth in the nation in scoring averaging 28.3 points per game after the first 10 days of the season. Gottlieb discusses her teams' hot start and how expectations are adjusted after the Trojans defeated then-No. 7 Ohio State in the season opener in Las Vegas. She also talks about the next wave of stars USC landed with a top 10 recruiting class. Shotgun and Connor then recap the start of the season for both Trojan teams, which began with a day-night USC hoops doubleheader sweep in Las Vegas over a pair of Elite Eight teams. Gottlieb's team landed a top 10 upset over the Buckeyes while the men took down a shorthanded Kansas State squad. The triple-double hosts also take a look at Gottlieb's versatile recuiting class. The hosts then look at where the Trojan squads stand both record and stat wise after 10 days. They also discuss the upcoming week of action for the USC teams with the women heading to the Bahamas to participate in an early-season tournament while the men hope for a 'Get Right' game. Last hurrah for USC's football season with UCLA coming to the Coliseum

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about the Trojans failed trip to the Pacific Northwest, falling to Oregon 36 to 27. USC football has now lost 4 of its last 5 games and are looking to take down UCLA on Saturday to salvage the season. There isn't much more to say about the trip to Eugene, just another failure to take down a ranked opponent for USC. The defense was able to make some adjustments and stop the explosive running game, but in doing so it allowed Bo Nix and the Ducks passing attack to go wild and put up historic numbers. Looking ahead to the regular season finale against the Bruins, the Trojans morale cannot be very high coming into this rivalry game, but UCLA's morale could be even lower with the news breaking this week that head coach Chip Kelly will likely be fired after this game, regardless of the outcome. While the difference between 7-5 and 8-4 isn't huge, especially considering this team was ranked No. 5 heading into the season, getting a win over a rival is still important and with the Trojans not having won a bowl game since the 2017 Rose Bowl, getting a better bowl game and playing well in the post season should be a priority. The guys talk about how Lincoln Riley and this team needs to do some major self reflection during the offseason and make sure to fix everything that is broken, including the obvious defensive problems and the less obvious special teams issues (SP+ has USC ranked dead last in FBS in special teams). Having an elite offense can only take a team so far, and when you are historically bad in two of the three phases of the game disappointing seasons like this one are inevitable. They also talk a little USC men's and women's hoops including Connor's newest basketball podcast that will launch this week with Shotgun Spratling and the first episode will feature USC women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. Helium Boys: USC falls in Oregon, UCLA coming to the Coliseum & picking a podcast name

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino have returned from the Pacific Northwest and are on the mics for the Helium Boys Podcast, breaking down USC's 36-27 loss to No. 6 Oregon Saturday night in Autzen Stadium, the final road game of the season for the Trojans. The Helium Boys episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' with both hosts giving their initial reactions to the weekend in Eugene. Naturally, Shotgun avoids talking about the actual game for as long as he can. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including the fact they've seen this game with a couple of different details over and over this season. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who/what impressed, including second-year freshman Tre'Quon Fegans taking advantage of an opportunity as well as the basketball teams' No. 1 recruits being named this season's first Pac-12 Freshman of the Week. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend with Bryson Shaw seeing a noticeable depreciation with former defensive coordinator Alex Grinch no longer around. The podcast quickly previews USC's final regular-season game, the crosstown rivalry with the UCLA Bruins. The Bruins (6-3) are in the midst of a two-game losing streak, falling 17-7 to Arizona State over the weekend. USC won last year's matchup 48-45 in dramatic fashion in the Rose Bowl. “We have one more shot in the Coliseum. We’ve got one more chance to play UCLA, and that’s a big rivalry for us. I think from the locker room, these guys have gone through a lot this year. They have hung in there, and they’ve kept swinging," said head coach Lincoln Riley after the game Saturday night. "There is a lot of unity in this locker room, and I think they very much appreciate one last chance to play the game together, and that’s what you do. It’s a first game that we’ve played here at USC where we’re out of a championship race. You don’t intend on playing anymore like this, but games like this show the character of the program, so that’s what we get a chance to go put on display.” The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter and Instagram discussing among other things the qualities they believe USC should be seeking in their next defensive coordinator. Then during the overtime portion of the 'Take It or Leave It' section, Chris provides Shotgun with some potential podcast names for an upcoming addition to the Peristyle Podcast family of shows. Finally, the podcast concludes with the Helium Boys giving their score predictions for the USC-UCLA matchup (12:30 p.m. PST) in the Coliseum to close out the Trojans' regular season. Coach Harvey Hyde thinks USC needs to look into the mirror after losing 4 of last 5 games

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC's 36-27 loss to Oregon in Eugene, another disappointing effort against a tough opponent. The Trojans were outgained 552 to 379 and Ducks quarterback Bo Nix went bananas, throwing for 412 yards and four touchdowns while completing 74% of his passes. Oregon was able to pressure Caleb Williams early and often, generating three sacks and one turnover while USC seemingly couldn't get close to Nix with no sacks and only two tackles for loss in the game. With the Trojans having lost an incredible four of their last five games, Coach Hyde thinks head coach Lincoln Riley needs to look into the mirror and see what changes need to be made in order for this program to eventually be championship caliber. This is the first time in Riley and Williams' careers that they are out of championship contention during the regular season, so how the team responds to that against rival UCLA this weekend will be interesting for sure. Coach Hyde saw Oregon play at a high intensity level and that combined with the amount of talent the Ducks had on the field is hard to beat. He wants to USC get there both with talent, toughness and intensity, but he just isn't seeing it right now. He is seeing more "me" attitude than "team" attitude and that has an impact on the entire program. Trojan fans are not happy right now and Coach Hyde thinks the players and coaches are not as well. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Tunnel Vision: Trojans fall to the Ducks and again can't put it together against tough a opponent

On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Connor Morrissette and Chris Trevino are back in studio fresh off their trip to the Pacific Northwest where they witnessed USC falling short against Oregon, 36-27 in Autzen Stadium. The Ducks took control of the game early thanks to a pair of 70+ yard touchdown passes and several long scoring drives. The Trojans fought back and tried to make it a game in the second half but it was too little and too late to have a realistic shot of getting the upset win. Our crew talks about what the defense looked like without defensive coordinator Alex Grinch running the show, the struggles of the USC offensive line against the Ducks front seven, how this team just can't seem to put it all together against quality opponents and lots more. Helium Boys: DC Alex Grinch fired, regrouping for Oregon and cartoon theme songs

The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino back to react to USC head coach Lincoln Riley's decision to make a change at the defensive coordinator position, firing Alex Grinch after the Trojans lost for the third time in four games, falling to Washington 52-42 in the Coliseum. They also break down the explosive offensive night of action from Saturday that sent the Trojans home with a 7-3 record on the season. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including how despite being ahead early and then later the score being even, it never really felt like USC was going to win the game because the Trojans defense wasn't going to be able to get a stop to give the USC offense the requisite opportunity to win the game. The Helium Boys episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' as each gives his initial reactions to the Trojans' loss to Washington and the biggest things that stood out. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who/what impressed, including veteran running back Darwin Barlow finally getting an opportunity and wasting no time at all to make an impact, second-year freshman Tre'Quon Fegans taking advantage of an opportunity and Lincoln Riley having the correct mentality when it comes to defense, saying "We’re going to play great defense here." The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend with Alex Grinch being at the top of the list followed by a failing pass rush and Riley claiming the Trojans are two plays away from being undefeated in conference play. Chris and Shotgun also look forward at the Trojans trip to Eugene this weekend for a matchup against No. 6 Oregon Saturday in Autzen Stadium, featuring a showdown between last season's Heisman Trophy award winner Caleb Williams and one of the frontrunners for the 2024 Heisman Trophy, Ducks quarterback Bo Nix. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter and email discussing the desired defense scheme as well as some of the USC players saying they didn't watch the film of the Washington game afterwards. Then during the overtime portion of the 'Take It or Leave It' section, Chris questions Shotgun on some of the top cartoon theme songs. Finally, the podcast concludes with the Helium Boys giving their score predictions for the USC-Oregon matchup (7:30 p.m. PST) on the road this weekend. Catching up with USC safety Zion Branch and wide receiver Zachariah Branch

Trojan redshirt freshman safety Zion Branch and freshman wide receiver Zachariah Branch are two of the young stars on the USC football team. Tunnel Vision hosts Ryan Abraham and Shotgun Spratling were joined in studio by the Branch brothers, talking about Zion's unfortunate season-ending knee injury and his road to recovery plus Zachariah's electric start to his college football career including being part of the flea-flicker touchdown pass from Caleb Williams to Tahj Washington. The interview was conducted in conjunction with House of Victory, an alumni-backed nonprofit collective dedicated to providing a competitive edge in the NIL space for University of Southern California student-athletes. Tunnel Vision: USC falls to Washington 52-42 leading to Lincoln Riley firing DC Alex Grinch

On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith are back in studio talking about the huge breaking news that head coach Lincoln Riley has pulled the trigger and fired his longtime defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. The guys give their initial reaction to the news that Trojan football fans have been longing for since the end of last season and if they feel it can make a difference with only two games left in the regular season. USC's 52-42 loss to Washington Saturday night in the Coliseum was a defensive nightmare and apparently was the final straw for Riley, who brought Grinch with him from Oklahoma. Riley took a lot of heat when he made the decision to keep his entire staff intact even after the embarrassing loss to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl. Fans wanted Grinch gone and Riley's gamble on the importance of staff continuity simply did not pay off. Our crew talks about all of the good (mostly offense) and bad (mostly defense) from the game against the Huskies and some of the historic marks that were set including the most points Washington has ever scored against USC (achieved in the first half alone) and the Trojan defense giving up 34+ points in six straight games for the first time in program history. Coach Harvey Hyde on USC pulling the trigger and firing defensive coordinator Alex Grinch

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing yet another disappointing defensive effort for the Trojans, this time a 52-42 loss to No. 5 Washington in the Coliseum. During the show as Ryan and Coach talked about the poor defensive performance news broke that defensive coordinator Alex Grinch had been fired, so they talk about that breaking news at the end of the episode. The Huskies were able to score on 8 of their 10 drives including 7 touchdowns for a ridiculous average of 5.2 points per drive. Coach Hyde feels it was a great crowd there for Homecoming and the offense scored enough to win the game, but the defense was questionable in every aspect of the game. Coach wants to know if this defense is even capable of getting a stop. He doesn't think all of the best players are playing and by now you should know which players can play and which cant. He's questioning the defensive philosophy where they can't even line up correctly or respond to offensive shifts, leaving the defense confused with huge gaps outside for opposing backs to run through. Coach would love to see head coach Lincoln Riley step in and start coaching on the defensive side and allow Kliff Kingsbury to take over and run the offense. The defense keeps doing the same thing and nothing changes and there are so many gaps in coverage that Coach said it looks like they are only playing with 9 guys out there. Coach says the kids are playing hard but with the combination of everything that is going wrong, the defense is simply horrible. With the loss the Trojans fell out of the AP Poll top-25 for the first time in the Riley era. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Tunnel Vision: Previewing No. 20 USC's monster matchup with No. 5 Washington in the Coliseum

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio to preview what could be a pivotal game for the Trojans, a matchup with the only undefeated team in the Pac-12, No. 5 Washington Huskies. With USC's loss to Utah two weeks ago the margin for error in the race to win the conference is essentially gone, especially with the gauntlet of a schedule the Trojans have left. For Lincoln Riley to have any shot at winning the Pac-12 in its final year of existence, his squad will need to take care of business against the Huskies on Saturday. Jack and Connor talk about what the players and coaches said this week during practice as they get ready for this important contest and discuss the news and notes including the unfortunately season ending injury for safety Zion Branch. They also break down the newly released Big Ten schedule with dates for 2024 where the Trojans travel to Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland, Washington and UCLA and host Penn State, Wisconsin, Rutgers and Nebraska. Both hosts will be in the Coliseum for this one and they give their thoughts on how it will turn out including their picks against the spread (Trojans are a 3 point underdog to Washington). Trojans about to start final gauntlet of the 2023 college football season

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about USC's narrow escape from Berkeley keeping their hopes of a Pac-12 title hope alive. The Trojans reward is a very tough Washington squad that is undefeated on the season and will head to Los Angeles this weekend in what is an absolutely pivotal game for Lincoln Riley and his squad. With the team back out on the practice field Tuesday, Ryan and Connor talk about what Riley, defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and the players had to say about that Cal win and facing the Huskies this weekend. The guys also talk about the initial College Football Playoff rankings where the Trojans ended up at No. 20 and will finish the season by facing No. 5 Washington, No. 6 Oregon and No. 19 UCLA over the next three weeks. Quarterback Caleb Williams talked about USC's playoff hopes still being alive even with two losses because of the tough games left on the schedule and the opportunity to get four-straight quality wins (including the Pac-12 Championship Game). No one is expecting the Trojans to make a run, so that actually can take a little bit of the pressure off heading into this final stretch of the season.
