Tunnel Vision: After USC falls to Washington for loss No. 5, 2024 is officially a wasted season
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Chris Trevino and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back from Seattle where they will once again discuss everything that made the road trip a nightmare for the Trojan football team and their fans. After the 26-21 loss to Washington, USC falls to 4-5 on the season, 0-4 on the road and has lost four of its last five games heading into the bye week. Head coach Lincoln Riley has as many losses (10) in his last 16 games at USC than he had in his entire Oklahoma career (55-10). After the game Riley continued with his message that the team is doing a lot of great things and they are simply one play away from turning a loss into a victory. While that is technically true, the common dominator is that being close to winning isn't good enough, especially when the schedule was favorable and some of those losses shouldn't have been close enough to go either way. The guys talk about what they saw and heard up in Seattle and try to make sense of this team fighting for bowl eligibility instead of a berth in the expanded College Football Playoffs. What is left for USC to play for? Wins over Nebraska plus rivals UCLA and Notre Dame would be nice, but it wouldn't erase another (at least) five-loss season in year three of Riley's tenure. This campaign started with great promise after beating LSU in Las Vegas, but four losses in the last five weeks officially makes USC football 2024 another wasted season. USC Triple-Double: Previewing the 2024-25 USC men's and women's hoops season & special interview with Beth Burns
The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the Peristyle Podcast's basketball-focused podcast -- returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) previewing the upcoming season for the USC men's and women's basketball teams with the Women of Troy a national championship contender and the men's team coming off an exhibition win over a top 10 Gonzaga team. But first, a special guest joins the show as USC women’s associate head coach Beth Burns comes on to discuss what she expects this season after the Trojans revamped the roster with the additions of the No. 1 transfer in the nation, Kiki Iriafen, and fellow Pac-12 transfer Talia von Oelhoffen along with the No. 1 high school recruiting class in the nation, led by Etiwanda (Calif.) guard Kennedy Smith. Burns also talks about how different preparation was leading into this season with the addition of seven freshmen compared to last year having three Ivy League graduate transfers that already had a ton of collegiate experience. Shotgun and Connor then break down the Women of Troy seeking a trip to their first Final Four since 1986 along with a completely new USC men's roster with 13 incoming transfers/freshmen under new head coach Eric Musselman. The podcasting duo give three things they are looking forward to from both squads and two things they still have concerns about as the season is about to begin. They also look forward to Monday's upcoming season openers with the Women of Troy playing in the Aflac Oui-Play event in Paris, France against No. 20 Ole Miss while the men will host SoCon contender Chattanooga at the Galen Center in Musselman's USC debut. Tunnel Vision: USC is looking for its first road win of the season, taking on the Washington Huskies
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio for a Halloween edition of the show, previewing the extremely important game between the USC Trojans and the Washington Huskies. Both programs are 4-4 and both need a victory for a realistic shot at making a bowl game and finishing the season on a high note. The Trojans will have their hands full trying to play in Husky Stadium, where UW has an 18-game winning streak going. USC hasn't won a true road game in over a year and would love to finally secure a Big Ten road win, even if it comes against a familiar Pac-12 foe. Washington's strength lies in its pass defense, ranked No. 1 in the FBS. USC likes to throw the ball with Miller Moss but Lincoln Riley could find more success with Woody Marks and the ground game up in Seattle. The Trojans could get some of their injured defensive players back for this game as they try to keep the Huskies offense at bay. UW is one of the top teams in FBS in terms of total offense, but for some reason Washington struggles in the red zone, making point production much lower. The Dawgs are also terrible on special teams, which could provide an opportunity for Zachariah Branch and Makai Lemon in the return game. Can the Trojans build on that Rutgers win heading into the Washington trip?
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about the Trojans ending their 3-game losing streak with a 42-20 victory over Rutgers on Friday night. The Scarlet Knights aren't a great team, but USC was desperate for a win and needed to get back to .500 with a chance to build on that in the final third of the season. This weekend we will see if the Trojans can keep the momentum of that win going, heading to Seattle to take on the 4-4 Washington Huskies in the final real road trip of the season. It should be an interesting matchup with UW sporting the best pass defense in the country to try and counter Miller Moss and SC's receiver corps. The Huskies play much better at home than on the road and will be looking to shake off their own two-game losing streak with a win over a former Pac-12 foe. The guys also talk about why head coach Lincoln Riley's decision to close practices the remainder of the season is concerning, as this team has plenty of problems that need to be addressed and having reporters watching 10 minutes of stretching isn't one of them. Coach Harvey Hyde talks about USC's performance against Rutgers and how important it was for the Trojans to get back into the win column
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde have a chance to talk about a Trojan football victory after USC took care of business by beating Rutgers 42-20 Friday night in the Coliseum. Coach feels like the Men of Troy needed this win badly after losing three straight and sporting a losing record for the first time in Lincoln Riley's head coaching career. The Scarlet Knights were an overmatched opponents and both teams were dealing with significant injuries, but USC did what it needed to do and put up good numbers that the program can build upon heading into the final four games of the regular season. It was a unique Friday sports night in Los Angeles with just a few miles of freeway separating USC hosting Rutgers, the Lakers hosting the Phoenix Suns and the Dodgers hosting the New York Yankees. Coach talks about all that was going on in the City of Angels and the part the Trojans played in the historic night. Coming out of that game, players were smiling again and that is very important for the psyche of a young student athlete. They could go to class on Monday with their heads up and there is more joy in the locker room and at the football facilities knowing that the team got an important victory. Following the win, the fans seem a little more subdued and less enthusiastic, likely a combination of the caliber of opponent, the late Friday kickoff and the lost expectations of what could have been a promising season after USC beat LSU in the opener. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Chris Trevino and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio giving their thoughts on the Trojans 42-20 victory over Rutgers Friday night in the Coliseum. After enduring a tough three-game losing streak, USC finally got back on the winning side thanks to over 300 yards passing for Miller Moss and three rushing touchdowns by Woody Marks. Before the guys give their thoughts on the game they welcome in the aforementioned Woody Marks, who had 94 yards rushing on just 15 attempts with a long of 22 and that trio of touchdowns that got the Trojans going early. Woody joins the show to talk about his progress this season, catching the ball out of the backfield, how important it was to get that win Friday and lots more. The interview with Woods was conducted in conjunction with House of Victory, an alumni-backed nonprofit collective dedicated to providing a competitive edge in the NIL space for University of Southern California student-athletes. Coach Harvey Hyde feels a combination of past errors is now catching up with this Trojan football team
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are once again trying to make sense of this USC football program that continues to find unique ways to lose a football game. This week the Trojans had a struggling Maryland squad on the ropes with a 14-point lead in the 3rd quarter and USC driving to put the game away. But as we have seen in all of the Trojans four losses this season, things went bad late and the Terrapins were able to pull off the upset and the fans that were left in the stadium stormed the field. Coach Hyde talks about some of the questionable decisions head coach Lincoln Riley has made over his two and a half years and how those errors are coming back to bite the Trojans and contribute to all of these losses. His first major issue is the lack of recruiting in Southern California and how that has contributed to the depth issues for this team. Coach Hyde knows that some of the top high school programs and prospects are right in USC's back yard and he wants to see Riley and his staff be much more active showing their faces on campus and doing their best to keep all of this top talent at home, similar to what Pete Carroll did. Coach also wants to see USC run the ball more and really impose their will with a physical ground attack. After going up 14 points against Maryland, that was time for the Trojans to start lining up and running to take control of the game, run clock and destroy the will of the opposition. Instead USC threw the ball 9 out of 10 times and relied on receivers making miracle catches, allowing the Terps to get back in the game. And he would like to see Riley be more of a head coach and less of an offensive coordinator. At this stage he needs to oversee all aspects of this team, offense, defense and special teams, to make sure the program finishes games the right away. With so much emphasis on the offensive play calling, Coach Hyde feels there isn't enough time dedicated to all of his other head coaching duties. Tunnel Vision: Another blown 14-point lead leaves Lincoln Riley & the Trojans looking for answers
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Chris Trevino and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back from Maryland and ready to talk about USC's latest baffling defeat, this time at the hands of the Maryland Terrapins. This was the third long road trip for the Trojans and the third time this program and their travelling fans had to endure a disappointing plane ride back to Los Angeles, thinking about everything that went wrong and all of the missed opportunities that could have secured a victory. After building up a comfortable 21-7 lead at the halftime break, USC got a stop and had the ball near midfield with a chance to put the game away. A Miller Moss interception turned the tide and the familiar late game collapse unfolded, with the Terps making all of the right moves and the Trojans making all of the key mistakes to let the game slip away. The guys talk about everything they saw and heard in College Park, the quotes (or lack thereof) from players and coaches after the game and what their thoughts on what this loss means for the rest of the season and the Lincoln Riley era. Both the Trojans and the Terps are desperate for a conference victory, with USC coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to Penn State and Maryland licking its wounds from a blowout loss at home to Northwestern. The guys talk about how important this weekend is for the Trojans to pick up their first road victory in the Big Ten and make a statement that this team is still good and has a lot to play for despite the 3-3 start. They also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this Terps program that has one of the more prolific passing games in the B1G and creates turnovers as good as anyone. Trojans down two top defenders heading into the Maryland road trip
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio with lots to talk about in the USC football world, following the heartbreaking overtime loss to Penn State. The guys take one quick look back at what went wrong late in the game against the Nittany Lions before turning the page and taking a look ahead at the long road trip to take on Maryland. The Trojans are still looking for their first road victory in Big Ten conference play and the Terps are a desperate squad after getting blown out at home at the hands of Northwestern, despite being a two-score favorite. Maryland is 3-3 and haven't notched a conference victory, so this could be another field storming opportunity if the Trojans once again can't figure out a way to win. They also discuss the breaking news that both defensive end Anthony Lucas and linebacker Eric Gentry will be out for the rest of the season and what impact that could have on that side of the ball going forward. They also discuss the Penn State fan that paid to run out of the tunnel with the Trojans, Lincoln Riley announcing that the team would be leaving later than normal on Friday for the long trip to Maryland, the basketball team's first exhibition game and lots more. Helium Boys: USC improved in loss to Penn State? Maryland preview and Trevino homecoming
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys return to break down USC's heartbreaking 33-30 overtime loss to No. 4 Penn State as a potential turn-the-season-around win eluded the Trojans in another tight game. Shotgun and Chris also look forward to USC's upcoming matchup and a final cross-country road trip this weekend as the Trojans take on struggling Maryland, the alma mater of one Chris Trevino. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' where Chris spends half of his time on his initial thoughts of the Penn State game before dedicating his final minute to what Maryland football meant to him growing up and how it helped lead him to this point in his life where he gets to cover a USC-Maryland football game. Shotgun then takes the 'Two-Minute Drill' reins to again talk about the inconsistency of Big Ten officiating and discusses why he's bullish on the Trojans' chances to go on a run in the second half of the season. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip over the last week. A couple of bounce-back performances earned Quinten Joyner and Jaylin Smith spots on the Stock Up side. The young defensive depth is also on the rise as Devan Thompkins got his first career start and led the team with four pressures while Desman Stephens II's fourth-ever snap with the first team saw him intercept Drew Allar and return it 42 yards. On the flip side, the Trojans' pass rush struggles and inability to defend Tyler Warren are featured prominently in the Stock Down portion. The Helium Boys then preview the upcoming road trip to Chris Trevino Country for the Trojans, taking a look at the key storyline, player and matchup before positing scenarios that would cause USC to win and scenarios that would cause USC to lose Saturday afternoon's game. There are a couple consensus picks among the podcasting duo as both are looking for Miller Moss to have a big impact and are keeping a watchful eye on the Trojans' pass rush against a porous Terrapin offensive line. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing all manner of items from the USC coaching staff's preparedness, Big Ten officials, what next season holds and learning how to win close games. The episode concludes with a role reversal as Shotgun quizzes Trevino with some Take It or Leave Its about the Trojans, including if Eric Gentry can continue to lead the team in some defensive categories even if he doesn't return this season. Shotgun then puts Chris through the Overtime ringer with Maryland-related Take It or Leave Its. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Coach Harvey Hyde breaks down another disappointing loss where USC got away from what was working against Penn State
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together and sounding like a broken record, with USC once again losing a very winnable game in the final seconds, this time in overtime 33-30 at the hands of No. 4 Penn State in the Coliseum. It was another exciting weekend of college football with two games on the West Coast that felt like the Rose Bowl, USC hosting Penn State and Oregon hosting Ohio State in Eugene. The Ducks got their signature win for the season, taking down the Buckeyes and the Trojans had their opportunity to take down a top-5 team and make a statement in the Big Ten, but fell short in the end. Coach Harvey Hyde liked the way the team came out and ran the ball and played good defense against Penn State, allowing only a pair of field goals in the first 30 minutes of the game. But he wasn't sure why head coach Lincoln Riley got away from what was working after halftime, throwing 8 passes through the first 9 plays and allowing the Nittany Lions to come back and tie the game fairly quickly. In a game with two great traditions going at it, USC was not just in a position to win but had a chance to blow PSU out, but the Trojans helped out the Lions by getting away from what was working and helping the Lions in their comeback bid. At the end of the day, Riley is one of the highest paid coaches in the country and Coach Hyde thinks that losing three of your last four games is not acceptable, whether they were all close at the end or not. This team has had many opportunities for someone to make a play down the stretch and in the three losses no one was able to break through and do so. Saturday the players played hard, Coach Hyde could tell they wanted to win, but when it came down to it they just were not able to execute. Coach Hyde was glad to see Riley take responsibility after the game, he just now wants to see them take the next step and figure out how to walk away from winnable games with a victory. Tunnel Vision: Trojans struggling to find answers after yet another last-minute defeat
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith and Shotgun Spratling are back in studio breaking down USC's 33-30 overtime loss to No. 4 Penn State, a game where the Trojans held a 14-point lead at halftime only to see it melt away in the second half. At the halfway mark in the season, USC is sitting at 3-3 and 1-3 in the Big Ten conference, with all three losses coming in the final seconds of the game. While it is true that the Trojans are just a few plays away from being undefeated, you are what your record is and right now USC is a middling team in its new conference and that simply isn't good enough. Head coach Lincoln Riley is in his third season and while he took over a dumpster fire and turned things around quickly, he has lost 8 of his last 13 games Trojan fans want answers. The Trojans put forward much better effort at home against Penn State than they did on the road at Minnesota, but it still wasn't enough to put away the No. 4 Nittany Lions. The guys talk about what they liked from USC's play on Saturday and where they thought the biggest issues were, starting with giving up a record 17 catches to PSU tight end Tyler Warren. It's regroup time for the Trojans with No. 4 Penn State coming to the Coliseum
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio discussing the worst result of the season for this USC football team, an upset loss on the road to Minnesota and the need for a quick turnaround with the No. 4 Nittany Lions coming to town. Connor and Ryan talk about the struggles these Trojans have had in conference play, especially on the road, and what they need to do to get a much needed victory over one of the best teams in the country. The guys have updates from what head coach Lincoln Riley had to say during his media appearances including injury updates, linebacker Eric Gentry potentially shutting it down after multiple concussions and his interaction with the Big Ten conference regarding the questionable calls in the game at Minnesota. As bad as the loss to the Golden Gophers was, USC does have a tremendous opportunity to get things going in the right direction by defeating a top-5 Penn State program on Saturday. The guys talk about this game and some of the strengths and weaknesses of this Nittany Lions squad. They also discuss the Trojans lack of explosive plays, new concerns on tackling, USC being "2 plays away from 5-0," the end of the National Letter of Intent, USC basketball's scrimmage and lots more. Helium Boys: USC stumbles in Minnesota, rematch with No. 4 Penn State and Mall of America
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys are back to break down USC's disappointing 24-17 loss to Michigan in Minneapolis as their first-ever conference Big Ten road win again evaded the Trojans. They also look forward to USC's upcoming matchup against a top five Penn State team in the Coliseum this weekend. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that Shotgun apparently has no regard for any more after blatantly abusing the timer as he rants about the inconsistency of the Big Ten officiating that USC has been subjected to during their tenure in the conference. Chris then takes the 'Two-Minute Drill' reins to talk about his trip to Minnesota Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip this week. Woody Marks continues to be a stock up candidate after another strong performance. Eric Gentry's stock was on the rise despite not playing while youngsters Alani Noa and Jide Abasiri are on the climb as is USC's run blocking. On the flip side, the Trojans' run defense and inability to get off of blocks is discussed heavily in the Stock Down portion. The Helium Boys then preview the upcoming Big Ten home opener against No. 4 Penn State for the Trojans, taking a look at the key storyline, player and matchup before positing scenarios that would cause USC to win and scenarios that would cause USC to lose Saturday afternoon's game. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing the offensive line play and the warmth of offensive line coach Josh Henson's seat, zebra issues and Greedy Vance Jr. The episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its about the upcoming game and the state of Pennsylvania before having him cold rank the eight most American things in the Mall of America. Coach Harvey Hyde thinks USC needs to make adjustments to survive in the Big Ten
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about another disturbing loss for the Trojans, falling on the road to 24-17 to Minnesota. Coach Hyde has a lot of thoughts on this game, one that USC needed to and should have won if it had any belief that this team was capable of competing for a spot in the College Football Playoffs. Coach Hyde thinks that this team needs to make adjustments to survive in the world of Big Ten football, as there are many differences from what USC is seeing now as opposed to what it saw back in the Pac-12. It starts with being more physical in every aspect of the game, and while the Trojans have improved in that area, there is still a lot more work to do. There are more ‘bring your lunch pail to work’ games in this conference and USC needs to be ready for contests turning into a rock fight, with fewer possessions and blocking and tackling taking precedence over a finesse passing game. Tunnel Vision: Previewing No. 11 USC heading back out on the road to take on Minnesota
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio previewing the No. 11 USC's road trip to Minnesota, with the Trojans facing off against a desperate Golden Gophers squad that is 2-3 on the season and looking for its first Big Ten conference win of the season. The game will be on live at 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time and 6:30 p.m. Central Time and shown on the Big Ten Network. The guys talk about some of the matchups for this game including the highly ranked defense for Minnesota including a secondary that has eight interceptions on the season. The Gophers have been more pedestrian on offense and the offensive line already has 15 penalties on the season, but as we saw against Michigan they can put together some good drives and should be a tough test for D'Anton Lynn's defense. Both teams have had some up and down plays from their special teams units and it could come down to which side avoids the huge mistake or makes the game changing play in the kicking game. The guys also discuss USC's injury situation, the progress of the offensive line, what it will take for the Trojans to get their first Big Ten road victory and lots more. Trojans trying to follow up first Big Ten victory with road win at Minnesota
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio discussing the Trojans second half comeback over Wisconsin and the upcoming road trip against Minnesota. After some time to digest what went down Saturday in the Coliseum the guys share their thoughts on the game, including what they heard from Lincoln Riley on Trojans Live and following Tuesday's practice. Riley was able to provide some injury updates including safety Akili Arnold and linebacker Eric Gentry being listed as questionable for the road trip to Minnesota. As expected, there was no sight of Bear Alexander at practice and no further update on his status with the team. We they have discussed since Connor broke the news last week, we don't expect to see Bear around the team for the rest of the season. Linebacker Raesjon Davis also appears to be a redshirt candidate as he was wearing a scout team jersey during Tuesday's practice. There was also a lot of talk about the offensive line focusing on the fundamentals coming off of that Michigan loss. The front five played better against Wisconsin, but there was still a lot of pressure on Miller Moss and they need to keep developing and improving as the season goes on. Looking ahead the guys talk about this extremely important business trip to Minneapolis where the Trojans will try to secure their first road win in Big Ten conference play. The Golden Gophers are 2-3 on the season but gave Michigan all it could handle last weekend in the Big House, so USC will need to come to play if it wants to improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Helium Boys: USC readies for Minnesota road test, Wisconsin comeback and muffin talk
The Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast, returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino behind the microphones for another episode. The Helium Boys are back to break down USC's come-from-behind 38-21 victory over Wisconsin in the Trojans' first-ever Big Ten game in the Coliseum and look forward to a trip to Minnesota to take on a stingy Golden Gophers team that has struggled to put together a complete game. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that includes Chris thanking the staff for filling in for him after missing the game for a wedding while Shotgun initially goes off the rails talking about MLB's final day of the regular season before discussing the potential of road weariness starting to play a factor for the Trojans as they travel back and forth across the country. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip this week. Ja'Kobi Lane and the carousel of receiving targets taking first billing are discussed as well as the Trojans' defense getting repeated stops on third and fourth down. Quinten Joyner, Kamari Ramsey and second-half adjustments also make the cut. But on the flip side, USC's lack of intensity coming out of the gates the last two weeks was discussed heavily in the Stock Down portion. After a break, the Helium Boys preview the Trojans' upcoming Big Ten road trip to Minnesota, taking a look at the key storyline, player and matchup before positing scenarios that would cause USC to win and scenarios that would cause USC to lose Saturday evening's game. The podcast duo then answer your mailbag questions discussing primarily offensive line concerns and defensive pressure issues of the Trojans. Coach Harvey Hyde on how he feels the Trojans just need to avoid beating themselves
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC getting its first ever Big Ten conference victory, taking down Wisconsin 38-21 in the Coliseum. After a slow start and the worst half of football of the season that put the Trojans in a 21-10 hole, USC pitched a shutout after halftime and outscored the Badgers 28-0 on its way to a 17-point victory in a game that looked very much in doubt. Coach talked about the need for the Men of Troy to avoid the bad starts like what we saw on Saturday with three first half turnovers, uncharacteristically poor tackling a poor efforts on punt returns. If the Trojans can just avoid beating themselves, the schedule sets up well enough that the wins will come and USC should be in the College Football Playoff picture at the end of the season. After beating themselves in the first half against Wisconsin, Lincoln Riley and his troops cleaned things up and took control of the game. He loves the bend but don't break attitude of the defense that has shut out the opposition in 6 of 12 quarters and only allowed 82 yards in the second half against the Badgers. He feels the pass blocking needs some work and he wants to see some adjustments made to help Moss in this offense that seems more suited for a highly athletic quarterback. He also wants to see better communication on the punt returns, saying the team needs to generate positive yards and be smart with the choice of returning the ball or not. All three guys were in the Coliseum and witnessed the first half to forget followed by a second half that was unforgettable with where the Trojans outscored Wisconsin 28-0 including a game clinching pick-6 by linebacker Mason Cobb. Before the guys give their thoughts on the game they welcome in safety Kamari Ramsey who led the team with four tackles, the only two tackles for loss on the defense including the best hit of the year in the second half. Ramsey joins the show to talk about yet another stellar second half performance by this Trojan defense, how the team dealt with Akili Arnold's absence and getting the first ever Big Ten conference victory. Trojans trying to regroup after the Michigan loss plus Bear social media drama
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio discussing how the Trojans are trying to move on from the heartbreaking loss to Michigan this week and looking ahead to Wisconsin for the first Big Ten game in the Coliseum. The guys talk about what head coach Lincoln Riley had to say on Trojans Live and after Tuesday's practice plus what the offensive players talked about including Woody Marks and his amazing strip of the football that essentially kept the Trojans in the game against Michigan. They also look ahead to an important matchup against Wisconsin and talk about how the Trojans will try to get right on offense and keep the high level defensive play going against the Badgers. If getting pushed around by Michigan's defensive front wasn't enough to light a fire under this Trojan offense, knowing former DC Alex Grinch and former starting linebacker Tackett Curtis are on the opposing sidelines should be all the motivation Miller Moss and company needs. Outside of three plays, the USC defense played extremely well against the Wolverines and a similar effort should be enough to shut down Wisconsin who is without its starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. They also give their thoughts on the Bear Alexander situation with some interesting comments on social media from his camp and former USC football players. On Tuesday Lincoln Riley said, "there's no story there," but the social media posts keep coming. CLICK HERE for 30% OFF an annual VIP membership to USCFootball.com! The Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast, returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino behind the microphones for another episode. The Helium Boys are back to break down USC's heartbreaking 27-24 loss to Michigan in the Big House in their-ever Big Ten game and look forward to the first-ever Big Ten matchup in the Coliseum this weekend when Wisconsin comes to town. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that Chris apparently can't remember the name of. Shotgun talks about the atmosphere and the pageantry of the matchup between USC and Michigan as well as how one play could have changed this entire game. Chris then takes the 'Two-Minute Drill' reins to talk about how close the game was and how the Trojans showed grit to rally to take the lead before ultimately falling. Then he goes on a rant about the term "caddy corner," and it's usage in Ann Arbor on this trip. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip this week. Woody Marks and Miller Moss were two unanimous choices for improving stocks as was the continued elite, wild man play of Eric Gentry on the defensive side. But on the flip side, the offensive line was discussed heavily in the Stock Down portion. The Helium Boys then preview the upcoming Big Ten home opener against Wisconsin for the Trojans, taking a look at the key storyline, player and matchup before positing scenarios that would cause USC to win and scenarios that would cause USC to lose Saturday afternoon's game. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing Zachariah Branch's returns, Gentry's draft stock, offensive line concerns, play calling issues, zebra issues, signs of growth and even future WNBA Draft information. Coach Harvey Hyde gives his thoughts on USC's 27-24 loss at Michigan
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about what was an extremely disappointing loss for the Trojans first every Big Ten conference game, a 27-24 defeat at the hands of Michigan in the Big House. Coach loved the setting for this USC vs. Michigan game, reminding of some of the classic Rose Bowls of the past between these two blueblood programs. The weather was great, there were 110 thousand people in the stands and it was an absolute perfect setting for the Trojans first ever Big Ten conference game. Tunnel Vision: Recapping USC's frustrating 27-24 loss to Michigan in the Big House
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Chris Trevino and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back from Michigan where they witnessed what was a very frustrating loss for the Trojans, falling to Michigan 27-24 in front of over 110,000 souls in the Big House. The Wolverines were completely one-dimensional on offense with Alex Orji throwing for just 32 yards in his first career start, but Michigan ran for 290 yards including three explosive runs and that ended up being just enough offense for the boys in blue to take down USC. The Trojans couldn't have started worse on offense with the run blocking and pass protection equally bad in the first half. Lincoln Riley switched things up with his front five and that worked well after halftime, but USC just didn't play a clean enough game to take control of a game that was certainly within its reach. The guys talk about everything they saw and heard in Ann Arbor, the quotes (or lack thereof) from players and coaches after the game and what their thoughts on what this loss means for the rest of the Big Ten schedule. When USC and UCLA announced they were leaving the Pac-12 for the B1G, no one could have anticipated that the Trojans very first Big Ten conference game would be as historic as this one, facing off against the Wolverines in the regular season for the first time since the 1950s. USC and Michigan are used to meeting up in the Rose Bowl, so Saturday's contest will be a unique early season clash between college football blue bloods. Helium Boys Special: Interview with USC LB Eric Gentry on regaining confidence, film study and Wawa
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return for a special Tunnel Vision takeover episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football prodcast. The Helium Boys are back with a special guest interview with USC linebacker Eric Gentry where he talks about regaining his confidence, his passion for film study, the Trojans' defensive turnaround and his affinity for Wawa. Gentry discusses how he's been able to get off to a great start to the season, leading the team with 14 tackles, including a team-best 3.5 tackles for loss, through the first two games. He credits the new coaching staff for helping him take his game to another level, including linebackers coach Matt Entz helping him decipher presnap indicators that have helped him play a step faster. A lot of that comes from his work in the film room, which is something Gentry has taken very seriously since now-Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce helped show him the importance during their time together at Arizona State. The 6-foot-6 linebacker also talks about the freedom he has in the new defense, how defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn asks for and uses his feedback from the field and discusses when he realized the Trojans could have a good defense this year. He tries to define what his role in USC's defense is, and Gentry even looks back and opens up about the school he wanted an offer from growing up that never came. After a break, Shotgun and Chris delve into Gentry's personality, which has an on-field/off-field duality. Gentry also talks about the role his faith plays as a Muslim football player and why music is so important to him, particularly on game days. The episode concludes with the podcasting duo quizzing the Philadelphia native about his home city with Chris throwing some Take It or Leave Its about the iconic elements of Philly at Gentry. Chris and Shotgun then dive into a preview of the upcoming Michigan game for the Trojans, taking a look at the key storyline, player and matchup before positing scenarios that would cause USC to win and scenarios that would cause USC to lose Saturday afternoon's game. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore unveiling his starting quarterback five days before kickoff, how the Michigan offensive line is looking compared to last year and how much concern there should be about Bear Alexander's lack of production through the first two games. Men's hoops coach Eric Musselman joins the USC Triple-Double Podcast
The USC Triple-Double Podcast returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) talking about USC men's basketball's non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2024-25 season, the first under new head coach Eric Musselman, as well as the Trojans' recruiting efforts for future classes. Shotgun and Connor also answer some of your questions, taking user-submitted questions from social media and The Peristyle. They discuss the potential pace USC may try to play with this season as it goes to the Big Ten, knowing Musselman has played at a quicker tempo in the past but not in the rugged midwestern conference that is known for physical battles and swallowed whistles. But then everything the podcasting duo says is overshadowed as new USC head coach Eric Musselman joins the show for the first time. The energetic Musselman talks about how he's constantly learning and taking lessons from other sports and other coaches. He also discusses how learning his new roster is coming along as the Trojans pull together 15 previously-unknown-to-each-other pieces and try to mesh into a cohesive unite. The head coach talks about the lessons he learned in the transfer portal, particularly from last year's cycle when Arkansas netted a talented roster that could beat the best teams in the country but never melded together into a consistent, cohesive unit. Musselman also reveals why versatility was such an important element in their recruiting efforts this offseason. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Helium Boys: Trojan defense lights out in shutout of Utah State and bye week momentum
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football prodcast. The Helium Boys are back to break down USC's 48-0 thrashing of Utah State in the Trojans' home opener and discuss how the Trojans should be evaluated entering their bye week before a huge showdown with Michigan. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill.' Shotgun raves about how good the Trojan defense has looked under the defensive staff of D'Anton Lynn, Eric Henderson, Matt Entz and Doug Belk after USC notched its first shutout in 13 years. Chris then takes the 'Two-Minute Drill' reins to talk about how important blowout victories are for the development of a program because of the opportunities it allows young players to get on the field, get their feet wet and get adjusted to the speed and physicality of the college game.. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their stocks in Stock Up/Stock Down looking at what players or elements were elevated or took a hit based on preseason expectations and the first game of the season. Both Helium Boys gush about the play of linebacker Eric Gentry, who seems to be having more fun than anyone in the stadium on game days and who is having a huge impact on a play-in, play-out basis. Shotgun goes as far as to put Gentry on All-American watch with the way he has shined through the first two games. There is plenty of stocks on the rise after a 48-0 win with Miller Moss, the running back group, young defenders and Lake McRee's surgeon all getting some love. The Stock Down section is much shorter as is to be expected, but one element Shotgun harps on is the receivers catching. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing among other things what it will take for the Trojans to be able to keep Lynn around for more than one season and what kind of adjustments Lynn can make against a Michigan offense that has struggled thus far. They also give their suggestions for an improved Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and talk about Lincoln Riley's red zone passing game play calling. The episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its around rankings and player performances. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Coach Harvey Hyde thinks USC's tackling is the most improved after the 48-0 shutout of Utah State
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about this Trojan football team improving to 2-0 on the young season following the 48-0 home opening victory over Utah State late Saturday night in the Coliseum. The Coach talks about what he liked on the offensive side of the ball, especially how the run game finally got going. On defense he thinks the No. 1 thing is how improved the tackling has been and that was a major part in the Trojans pitching a shutout against the Aggies. The guys also take a look at what USC needs to do during the bye week to get prepared for the Trojans first Big Ten conference game, a tough road trip to a Michigan squad that is licking its wounds this week after getting pushed around by Texas. This game looks much more winnable than it did just a couple of weeks ago, so Lincoln Riley and his staff need to prepare this team for a business trip to Ann Arbor. Tunnel Vision: Previewing No. 13 USC hosting Utah State plus linebacker Mason Cobb joins the show
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio previewing the home opener for the No. 13 USC Trojans, who face off against Utah State from the Mountain West. The guys talk about what they know from the Aggies who won their opener against Robert Morris and how the Trojan defenders could face off against a familiar face at quarterback with former Utah signal caller Bryson Barnes (aka the "Pig Farmer") potentially starting for the injured Spencer Petras. Before the crew gets into their detailed preview of Saturday night's contest in the Coliseum they welcome in linebacker Mason Cobb who sealed the victory over LSU with his last second interception. Cobb had four tackles, the aforementioned interception and one pass breakup and was part of a linebacker crew that performed extremely well against the Tigers Sunday night in Las Vegas. The guys also talk about Caleb Williams getting his No. 13 retired (the same number Mason Cobb wears incidentally) and his jersey along with the No. 5 jersey of Reggie Bush being put up under the Peristyle in the Coliseum. The interview with Cobb was conducted in conjunction with House of Victory, an alumni-backed nonprofit collective dedicated to providing a competitive edge in the NIL space for University of Southern California student-athletes.
