How much has the USC defense improved?

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and new USCFootball.com senior staff writer Connor Morrissette are in studio LIVE talking about what USC head coach Lincoln Riley and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch had to say following the Trojans 56-28 victory over the San Jose State Spartans. Heading into the game all eyes were on the new-look defense with high expectations for significant improvement over last season. The results were a mixed bag, with four three-and-out drives on the good side and defensive breakdowns leading to four touchdowns on the bad side. We heard from Riley on Trojans Live Monday night and then both Riley and Grinch after practice on Tuesday. The guys talk about what the coaches had to say about the extensive rotation used in the game as well as the good and the bad from the defensive side of the ball. They also discuss the freshman breakout player for the Trojans (and potentially all of college football), former five-star wide receiver Zachariah Branch who shined as a pass catcher, punt returner and of course kickoff returner with his electric 96-yard touchdown. USC has Nevada up next so Ryan and Connor give their thoughts on the game and what they would like to see from the Trojan offense, defense and special teams against an overmatched opponent. Helium Boys: Reacting to overreactions of USC's win vs. San Jose State & answering your questions

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return for the first in-season Helium Boys Podcast to react to the overreactions of USC's 56-28 win over San Jose State in the season opener. The Helium Boys discuss what should be the big takeaways from the blowout victory and what things should be taken with a grain of salt...at least for now. Shotgun and Chris break down the victory with Stock Up/Stock Down, discussing who impressed, including the obvious -- Zachariah Branch -- and those that might have flown a bit under the radar -- Branch's fellow freshman Elijah Hughes. The boys also take a look at the bigger themes that took a first step towards being developed in the opener and what has to be cleaned up in the next couple weeks to keep the pitchforks at bay. They preview this week's matchup against Nevada, who the Trojans have not played since 1929. Despite the nearly 100-year span between matchups, there should be some familiarity with several known faces on the other side from former Colorado quarterback Brendon Lewis, former Oregon running back Sean Dollars and most notably former Trojans wide receiver John Jackson III and edge rusher Elijah Winston. A podcast of the people, the Helium Boys also answer your USC mailbag questions about a number of topics spanning from the offensive line rotations to the top linebacker pairings and who were their standouts on the defensive side of the ball. Finally, the podcast concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some "Take It or Leave It" prompts both from the Trojans' Week 0 win over the Spartans and inventions that debuted in the year the Wolf Pack and Trojans last played. Tunnel Vision: Recapping USC's 56-28 victory over San Jose State

For this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Chris Trevino, Jack Smith and Shotgun Spratling are back in studio to talk about this USC football team's season opening 56-28 victory over San Jose State. The Trojans had some lapses on both sides of the ball but were still able to pull away from the Spartans, extending the lead to 35 points before giving up a late garbage time touchdown with backup defenders in the game. The guys talk about what they liked, including an absolute explosive performance by true freshman wide receiver Zachariah Branch, and what they didn't like, including the defense giving up a long touchdown pass late just before halftime that cut the score to 21-14. Coach Harvey Hyde breaking down the good and the bad from USC's win over San Jose State

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC's season opening 56-28 win against San Jose State Saturday night in the Coliseum. The Trojans came in as a heavy favorite and finished up with a 28-point margin of victory, but there was still a lot of room for improvement, especially along both lines and the overall defensive effort as a whole. Coach and Ryan don't pull any punches and share exactly what they though of the job head coach Lincoln Riley and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch did against the Spartans. The coach starts off talking about it being an opening game and you really don’t know what to expect. As a coach, you hoped that you covered all scenarios and get the guys ready to play. One of the ways Riley tried to get everyone ready to play, and ready to play the rest of the season, was using mass substitutions throughout the game. We saw three different offensive line combinations in the first four drives and just about everyone on defense was rotating in and out. Coach Hyde thinks that this is great to get more film on guys and see how they perform, but it is also tough for units to get into a rhythm with the personnel changes every drive. Offensively the coach felt it was hard to get a feeling for the run game with the carries being spread out among several backs. He also wouldn’t like to see Caleb Williams running around with run/pass option plays where he can get hit and potentially injured. Overall the balance was good with 33 runs and 33 passes, he just felt like the timing and rhythm was off with so many different personnel packages coming in and out. Defensively the tackling was much better and the players that were playing looked bigger, stronger, faster and more athletic than what was on the field last season. Coach Hyde isn’t as down on this defense as some fans are, and wants everyone to get it a little time. His philosophy is you can’t coach a kid that can’t play and while that was the case last year, it isn’t this season. USC has players that can play and he feels that will show as the season progresses. They also discuss the special player that Zachariah Branch is, with his 232 all purpose yards with a receiving touchdown and a kickoff return for a touchdown. The bad part is Coach Hyde says teams won’t even be kicking to him going forward, he is just too good with the ball in his hands. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Re-ranking USCfootball.com's Top 30 Most Important Trojans

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back together for a special behind-the-scenes edition of the Helium Boys Podcast. The Helium Boys work through the process of compiling and debating a post-fall camp re-rank of USCfootball.com's Top 30 Most Important Trojans' list. For the last four seasons, the USCfootball.com staff has counted down the Top 30 Most Important Trojans in a series of offseason articles leading up to the kickoff of fall camp. The last two seasons the amount of turnover on the USC roster has made it a bit of a guessing game trying to decipher and determine the value of newcomers, so we've incorporated a re-rank when the Trojans' football team makes the transition from fall camp to game preparation in the week leading up to the season opener. Each USCfootball.com staff member submits his own list of whom he/she believes will be the most important Trojans. Considerations for the rankings take in a wide range of factors including positional depth, 2022 stats, overall talent, departures from the previous season, projected development and expectations. The only guidance we try to follow is that the most important factor for placement is if this particular player was lost for the season, how detrimental would it be to the team and the overall success of the season. The individual lists are submitted and compiled before Shotgun and Chris come together to sift through the information, debate and assemble the official USCfootball.com rankings. In this podcast, the Helium Boys give you a peek behind the curtain, allowing you to listen in on the re-rankings discussion as we sift, sort and come up with the final preseason rankings. The re-rank includes risers like the Masons -- Cobb and Murphy -- as well as players whose importance declined whether through an inability to lock up a starting role or the emergence of other players at the position. Coach Harvey Hyde on USC's announced team captains plus his record prediction for the 2023 Trojans

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back talking about the start to the 2023 college football season with the Trojans hosting San Jose State Saturday night in the Coliseum. There is a lot of excitement surrounding the opening of the season and Coach Hyde says it time for the coaches to time everything right so players are fired up for a game on Saturday and not overly hypes so they are game ready on Wednesday. The guys start talking about the newly announced team captains for the season with quarterback Caleb Williams, offensive linemen Justin Dedich and linebacker Shane Lee returning as captains for the second year in a row. They are joined by offensive lineman Jonah Monheim and linebacker Mason Cobb to round out the 2023 captains. Coach Hyde says players know who they have voted for and they know who the leaders are, so it is important that the coaches honor the player’s vote and name their captains accordingly. When the dust settles on Sunday morning what will USC fans be talking about? Coach Hyde feels that this defense is going to make a statement in its first encounter of the season and dominate San Jose State. He feels the defense will show major improvement and the offense will realize that they will be able to rely more on the defense getting stops instead of simply outscoring everyone. Ryan added that he feels the defense needs to generate stops even more so that forcing turnovers, showing that tackling has improved and performances like we saw late last season will be a thing of the past. They finish up the show analyzing USC’s 2023 schedule game by game, talking about where the Trojans could slip up and where they will be challenged and finally what they feel USC’s regular season record will be following the season finale against UCLA. Ryan has the Trojans going 11-1 and Coach Hyde thinks USC can finish the season undefeated. Both feel that to do that Caleb Williams needs to stay healthy and if the defense improves like they both believe it can. Trojan defensive focusing on consistency and coachability plus USC No. 6 in the AP Poll

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and new USCFootball.com senior staff writer Connor Morrissette are in studio LIVE talking about this Trojan football team entering their "mock game week" as they continue preparations for the highly anticipated 2023 college football season. The squad held a scrimmage over the weekend and was back out on the practice field this week, mimicking what they will be doing next week leading up to the week zero opener against San Jose State. The guys start out talking about what they heard and saw from Monday's practice that featured head coach Lincoln Riley, defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and several defensive players addressing the media after the workout. Riley talked about coming off of their weekend scrimmage and some of the injury issues with the team right now, specifically at inside linebacker where Eric Gentry and Shane Lee have both missed practice time, impacting the overall linebacker depth. This is the first time we have heard from Grinch since USC Media Day before camp started and the talked about the need for consistency and coachability from his players. If they are able to play more consistent and continue to be coachable, he feels this will be a much better defensive team in the fourth quarter. Grinch also talked about some of the cross training that is going on between defensive ends and the rush ends on the defense. The preseason AP poll came out on Monday and the Trojans are in the exact same spot (No. 6) as they were when the coaches poll dropped last week. Defensive depth improvement is evident in the second week of USC fall camp

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and new USCFootball.com senior staff writer Connor Morrissette were in studio to talking about how this Trojan football team has looked a week and a half into USC fall camp. So far the Trojans have practiced 10 times including their first full pads scrimmage over the weekend. Ryan and Connor talk about what they have seen out on the practice field during the open media windows and what head coach Lincoln Riley and the assistant coaches and players have said following those partially open practices. The guys start out talking about some of the interesting comments Riley had following Tuesday morning's practice, where he focused on how the defensive depth has improved and there are competitive position battles almost everywhere. He said players that saw plenty of playing time last season now find themselves in a real battle to even get on the field now, showing how much deeper a roster (especially on defense) USC has heading into the 2023 college football season. Riley also talked about the first scrimmage of camp (closed to the media) and how it was won by the defense, led by the pass rush of the defensive front. Riley said the battles of the offensive and defensive lines have gone back and forth, as have the overall offensive and defensive battles, but over the weekend in the scrimmage it was the defense that won the day led by safety Zion Branch who had a pick-6 and forced a fumble. Next week is "mock game week" and Riley said it would be critical for guys to put themselves on the radar if they want to play this season. Guys who are playing well next week have a chance separate themselves and earn their spot on the depth chart for the opener against San Jose State. Coach Harvey Hyde's USC fall camp observations plus the death of the Pac-12

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back talking about a variety of USC football topics as the highly anticipated start of the 2023 college football season inches closer. The guys start off talking about how the Trojans have looked in fall camp so far, with Coach Hyde making it down to campus last week to check out the team. Coach likes to sit by the gate and eyeball the players as the emerge from the locker room, giving him a chance to size everyone up and compare the new players and see the body changes of the veteran players. He also likes the new vantage point the media has from over on the Dedeaux Field bleachers, giving us a chance to see more of what is happening on the field. It also allows us to see the offensive and defensive linemen up close (and Coach Hyde thinks the offensive line is much bigger than he has seen before). He also really likes the depth USC has for their offensive skill positions and still has some concerns about the inside linebacker spots. Next Coach and Ryan discuss the newly released preseason coaches poll where USC came in at No. 6. Some of the Trojans opponents and programs with tight USC connections are ranked including Washington at No. 11, Notre Dame at No. 13, Utah at No. 14 and Oregon at No. 15. USC’s Cotton Bowl opponent Tulane is ranked No. 23, Steve Sarkisian and Texas are No. 12 and Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss are No. 22. The Trojans don’t play Oregon State (No. 18) in the regular season but could face the Beavers in the final Pac-12 Championship Game. The guys final topic is on the death of the Pac-12 and the over 100 years of tradition ruined in large part by former commissioner Larry Scott and the Pac-12 presidents. Both Coach and Ryan think it is a sad day seeing the conference going down in flames like that (though many USC fans don't agree). The Trojans will be in a better spot for sure in the Big Ten, but losing some of those traditional rivals like Cal and Stanford will take a while to get used to. The Trojans are relatively healthy after first four practices of fall camp 2023

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham, R.J. Abeytia and new USCFootball.com senior staff writer Connor Morrissette will be in studio to recap the first four practices of USC fall camp 2023, two of which were partially open to the media. The Trojans started fall camp early this year because of their week zero game against San Jose State. They held a workout early Friday morning and another early practice on Wednesday, both partially open to the media and both held over on Dedeaux Field (in USC's baseball stadium). The guys talk about what they heard from head coach Lincoln Riley following both workouts, including his thoughts on the health of the overall team. There were a few players that have missed some time early in camp including rush end Romello Height, rush end David Peevy, linebacker Raesjon Davis and defensive back transfer Tre'Quon Fegans. On the offensive line Gino Quinones looked like he moved into one of the starting guard spots with Wyoming transfer Emmanuel Pregnon going back to second team, at least for now. Wide receiver Ja'Kobi Lane doesn't get the pub that some of the other new wide receivers do, but according to some of the defensive players he made the most impressive play in fall camp so far. Arizona defensive back transfer Christian Roland-Wallace has arms like a linebacker and is now playing more inside at the nickel spot. He spent all of his career at corner and said he has played inside some against slot receivers and will go wherever the coaches ask him to. Defensive lineman Korey Foreman wasn't available to the media after Wednesday's practice, but Riley talked about his progress and how he is making strides every practice to become a standout player for the Trojans. Coach Harvey Hyde on the Trojans opening fall camp in preparation for the 2023 football season

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back after a brief hiatus talking about the USC Trojans getting ready to kick off the highly anticipated 2023 college football season, the second year under head coach Lincoln Riley. The Trojans return Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Caleb Williams, a ton of skill talent and a suspect defense that added a lot of new pieces during the off-season. The guys start off talking about how the Trojans were well represented in Las Vegas for Pac-12 Media Day with Riley, Williams and Oklahoma State transfer linebacker Mason Cobb. Overall Coach Hyde didn't feel like the Pac-12 did a good job of propping up what should be a strong conference this season. He felt like there wasn't any positive news and there was no strong leadership showing that would help produce more Pac-12 pride. Speaking of the Pac-12, there was plenty of "unity" talk coming on media day only to have Colorado bolt for the Big 12 just a few days later. Coach Hyde talks about all of the movement with the CU athletic program in hiring Coach Prime, a complete flip of the roster through the NCAA Transfer Portal and now switching conference affiliations. Coach feels like this Pac-12 is to blame for USC, UCLA and now Colorado leaving, going back to how things were run under Larry Scott and the conference presidents and chancellors. They also discuss last week's USC Media Day that gave everyone an opportunity to interview all of the assistant coaches and a few dozen prominent players about their off-season, getting ready for fall camp and of course the upcoming season. And they talk about what day one of USC fall camp was like, with an early morning workout that was over on Dedeaux Field. Coach Hyde loves to check out the early practices because it gives him an opportunity to eyeball the players up close and get a feel for how they have developed over the off-season. USC is sending Lincoln Riley, Caleb Williams and Mason Cobb to Pac-12 Media Day

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham, Chris Trevino and new USCFootball.com senior staff writer Connor Morrissette will be in studio to preview the upcoming Pac-12 Media Day, the unofficial start to the 2023 college football season. On Friday in Las Vegas USC head coach Lincoln Riley, Heisman winning quarterback Caleb Williams and inside linebacker Mason Cobb will represent the Trojans at Pac-12 Media Day for the final time. The guys talk about what it will be like for both USC and UCLA in Vegas with both teams heading to the Big Ten next season plus they discuss some of the hot topics that impact the Trojans like playing three new head coaches in a row, the health of Utah quarterback Cam Rising and plenty more. They also speculate about the Pac-12 media rights deal and what commissioner George Kliavkoff could say to kick off Media Day. If no deal is announced by Friday is it even possible to get the media focused on the football side of things and not the pending demise of the conference with no television deal in place? Mega mailbag episode plus USC picks up commitment from 4-star ATH Ryan Pellum

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio talking about the the latest USC football commitment from the 2024 recruiting class, Long Beach (Calif.) Millikan four-star wide receiver Ryan Pellum. The 5-foot-11, 170 pound athlete can play on both sides of the ball and initially didn't even have USC in his top-10 schools. But head coach Lincoln Riley and staff put in the work and now the local speedster will be saying home and playing for the Cardinal and Gold in 2024. The guys talk about the impact Pellum can have on this class, what they like about his game and how the Trojans moved up from the No. 57 class in the country at the end of May to now No. 8 in the country, one spot behind No. 7 Oregon in the Pac-12 and behind No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Michigan and No. 6 Penn State in the Big Ten. There was also some breaking news regarding the NCAA's thoughts on NIL collectives, producing their strongest language yet and going after collectives that provide inducements for prospects to attend particular schools or institutions from giving benefits to boosters who donate to NIL collectives. With not much else going on in late June, Chris and Ryan solicited questions on Twitter to fill out the show with a mega mailbag segment. Another huge recruiting weekend upcoming for the Trojans

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio talking about the tremendous football recruiting momentum that this Trojan football team has built up with another weekend of blue chip prospects visiting campus on tap. The guys talk about how this USC football recruiting class of 2024 climbed in the rankings from No. 57 all the way up to No. 19 in the country and No. 2 in the Pac-12 with a lot more room to move up with some more top verbal commitments. Last weekend didn't have a high number of visitors but USC did host another Elite Camp with several top prospect on campus working out in front of the Trojans coaching staff. This weekend its back to more major official visits including an extremely impressive group of wide receivers. This week also features a couple of major recruiting events with the Elite 11 Finals taking place in Redondo Beach and the OT7 Finals taking place in Huntington Beach. If you recall last year at the Elite 11 Finals Ryan and Chris had to leave the event early and come into the studio for an emergency podcast right after the news broke that USC and UCLA were leaving for the Big Ten. Speaking of the Big Ten, we get Chris' take on the 2024 and 2025 Big Ten football schedules for USC including his "back home" road trip to Maryland next year. Coach Harvey Hyde reacts to USC's future Big Ten football schedule for 2024 and 2025

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back breaking down the huge news that was released last week from the Big Ten, their Flex Protect Plus football scheduling model that will allow all 16 of the teams in the new-look B1G to play everyone in the conference at least once every two years and visit all 15 of the other venues at least once every four years. It also allows for protected rivalries that would be played every year and for the USC Trojans the obvious choices was the UCLA Bruins, keeping that long standing rivalry going. Coach Hyde talks about that new model and also what the USC football schedule will look like going forward in 2024 with the Trojans facing off against LSU in Las Vegas, home games against Notre Dame, Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin plus a road test against Penn State. Then 2025 is fun with Georgia Southern (and potentially Clay Helton), Ole Miss, Nebraska and Penn State in the Coliseum with road games against Ohio State, Wisconsin and Notre Dame. These schedules are exciting for the fans, and Coach Hyde thinks the Big Ten did a nice job. He would like to see the conference go one step further and make sure that USC and UCLA were not hosting huge games during the same weekend 20 miles apart. He would like to see that schedule alternate so the Rose Bowl hosts a Big Ten game one weekend then the Coliseum hosts one the following weekend. Overall he thinks these huge games will help both USC and UCLA recruit nationally and generate a lot more exposure for both brands. Coach also gives his thoughts on the shocking departure of Mike Bohn, a move he feels will impact the entire athletic department. Bohn and Brandon Sosna were the guys who brought in Lincoln Riley and now both of them are gone. With the success Riley has already had, is will be up to USC to bring in an athletic director that will work with Riley and get on the same page, not the other way around. Football drives the bus and USC needs to bring in a great leader and administrator, but also one that knows the football program is already rolling in the right direction and can't be derailed. Initial reaction to the 2024/2025 USC Big Ten schedule release

In this special edition of the Peristyle Podcast host Ryan Abraham is joined by Shotgun Spratling to give their initial reaction to the newly released Big Ten football schedule for the 2024/2025 football seasons. The Big Ten announced the removal of divisions and the introduction of the Flex Protect Plus scheduling model that will allow every Big Ten team to play a home and road game against all 15 other conference opponents in a four year period. For the Trojans their protected rival (program you will play every season) is UCLA and in year one USC welcomes Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois to the Coliseum with UCLA, Penn State, Maryland, Northwestern and Purdue on the road (to go along with Notre Dame at home and LSU in Las Vegas). In 2025 USC has Indiana, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State and UCLA at home and Ohio State, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Rutgers on the road. Initially Ryan and Chris Trevino were scheduled to discuss the massive USC recruiting weekend on Tuesday, but Ryan got ill and we had to postpone the show. So now the guys will spend the latter part of the show talking about how USC hosted more than a dozen class of 2024 official visitors to campus, a well attended USC Elite Camp and what seemed like a constant stream of Fight On! emojis signifying player commitments. The list of scholarship pledges included Modesto (Calif.) Central Catholic four-star offensive lineman Manasse Itete, Clearwater (Fla.) High’s 247Sports Composite four-star safety Jarvis Boatwright, Englewood (Colo.) Cherry Creek offensive tackle Hayden Treter, Gardena (Calif.) Serra four-star defensive back Dakoda Fields and Atlanta (Ga.) Booker T. Washington Top247 edge Kameryn Fountain. USC moved up from No. 57 all the way up to No. 21 in the country and No. 2 in the Pac-12. They did so by adding players that should help balance out the class, not only positionally but also geographically. In this edition of the Dedeaux Download podcast, part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows, Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith break down the news of USC baseball being snubbed by the NCAA selection committee despite some compelling metrics that have historically led to teams in the Pac-12 being selected as at-large teams. But before the guys rant and rave about the NCAA selection committee and their explanations for ignoring the West Coast, USC head coach Andy Stankiewicz comes on the Dedeaux Download to talk about how he and the Trojans reacted to Monday's selection show when they watched it together as a team. Stankiewicz discusses what the next steps are for the Trojans to move forward from this painful snub and how it could be motivation for USC's teams going forward. After a great conversation with Stankiewicz as always, Shotgun and Jack break down the final week leading up to the NCAA's Selection Monday reveal, including Austin Overn going off against UCLA in the Pac-12 Tournament to lock up a series win against the Bruins, and how the Trojans played in Scottsdale at the conference tournament, going 1-1 and failing to advance beyond pool play, finishing the season 34-23-1. They look at USC's national RPI and where it ranked compared to some other teams they were vying for to receive one of the final at-large berths. Reaction to the abrupt resignation of USC athletic director Mike Bohn

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back together talking about the rather abrupt resignation of USC athletic director Mike Bohn. Friday seemed like it would be a relatively slow news day in the world of college football until the LA Times reported that Bohn has sent his his resignation letter and would stepping down immediately as head of the Trojans athletic department. That was followed shortly after by an acceptance of the resignation letter by USC president Carol Folt, stating that he would no longer be the athletic director as of that day and they would put together a temporary leadership plan while they kick off a national search for a new AD. The guys talk about what both Bohn and Folt said in their statements as well as supportive statements from head football coach Lincoln Riley and head basketball coach Andy Enfield. They also discuss what they have heard about this major shift in the USC athletic department and talk about why Bohn left the job and the department in a much, much better place than he found it when he was hired in 2019. As far as replacement candidates go, the guys would like to see someone with athletic director experience at a major college program this time around. Four years ago USC's athletic department was in shambles with all of the bad hires and scandals and it would have been tough to hire any sitting Power Five AD. Now the department is in amazing shape with most of the sports excelling and the program moving to the greener pastures of the Big Ten, so getting a sitting Power Five AD shouldn't be a problem. Blanton talks about how he relied on several freshmen along with a few graduate transfers to help win the championship this season as well as coming into this final tournament as an underdog to No. 1 ranked UCLA. The championship match was an exciting one with USC up 2-0 after the first two matches and then UCLA had a furious comeback to tie things up at 2-2. It came down to the No. 3 pairs and USC's senior twins, Audrey and Nicole Nourse. Blanton talks about when the pressure is on, the Nourse twins always deliver and last weekend they did for the Women of Troy, securing a 2-1 victory and the USC three-peat. Dedeaux Download: USC baseball still in the hunt after series win vs. Oregon; hitting coach Travis Jewett joins the show

In this edition of the Dedeaux Download podcast, part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows, Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith break down USC baseball's big series win against No. 17 Oregon despite Friday starter Tyler Stromsborg initially being pushed back to Sunday and then ultimately being scratched altogether. But before the guys discuss the Trojans to rallying for a big Pac-12 series win against Oregon to breathe a little life back into their postseason hopes, a special guest joins the podcast. USC hitting coach and recruiting coordinator Travis Jewett comes on the Dedeaux Download to talk about how the Trojans were able to bounce back after struggling at Washington last weekend and losing a pair of midweek games for their longest losing streak of the season (five games). Jewett also talks a lot about the Trojans' hitting philosophy of getting back to the midline and what type of adjustments they do and do not make in two-strike and/or two-out situations. He breaks down how USC was able to handle a stretch where it got a lot of hits but struggled to come through with the clutch hits with runners on base. After a hearty conversation with Jewett, Shotgun and Jack break down all the action from the last two weeks of play, including looking at where the 27-20-1 Trojans stand in the Pac-12, sitting in third place with two regular-season weekends remaining. They also look at USC's national RPI and what the Trojans chances of making the NCAA tournament are looking like. Shotgun and Jack also discuss the upcoming week with the Trojans taking on Cal State Bakersfield at Dedeaux Field on Tuesday before welcoming in Arizona State for a crucial weekend series for both teams. Tunnel Vision: Wild weekend for Trojan athletics with major commitments & a national championship

On this edition of Sunday night Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Chris Trevino and Shotgun Spratling team up to talk about what was a very eventful weekend for the USC athletics department. On the football front head coach Lincoln Riley landed another highly ranked player out of the NCAA Transfer Portal in former Alabama four-star defensive back Tre'Quon Fegans. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Fegans took an official visit to USC over the weekend and announced his commitment Sunday morning over social media. Fegans was rated as a cornerback out of high school but he brings the versatility to play safety or the nickel position for USC's defense. Soon after the elder Fegans committed to USC his younger brother Lott Trophy luncheon also picked the Trojans. Anquon Fegans is the top ranked safety in the 2025 recruiting class. The Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson product comes in at 6-foot-1 and 180-pounds and is Riley's first commitment for 2025. On the basketball side head coach Andy Enfield landed one of the biggest name prospects out there when Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon Bronny James announced he would be attending USC. The son of NBA all-time scoring leader LeBron James is the No. 26 ranked prospect in the class of 2023 and picked the Trojans over Ohio State and Oregon. The 6-foot-3 combo guard joins a recruiting class that includes the No. 1 prospect in the country, Isaiah Collier of Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler. USC baseball had been in a bit of a slump but got a great series win over a nationally ranked Oregon squad, keeping their postseason hopes alive. The USC women's beach volleyball squad won an exciting 3-2 match against rival UCLA to win the national championship. The Bruins were the No. 1 seed and had defeated the Women of Troy at the Pac-12 Championships last week. But head coach Dain Blanton's squad came to play on Sunday, earning the upset win and completing the three-peat with their third-straight national championship. Coach Harvey Hyde on the Trojans in the NFL Draft and the NCAA Transfer Portal window closing

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back breaking down how the former Trojan football players fared in the 2023 NFL Draft. Day one of the draft was an exciting one for sure with three quarterbacks selected in the first four picks and two running backs going before the first wide receiver was selected. At pick No. 20 Seattle selected Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, starting a historic 4-pick run of wide receivers that included Minnesota snagging USC wide receiver Jordan Addison with the 23rd pick. With the selection of Addison, USC has had a first-round pick in the last four drafts and in six of the last seven years. This is the 22nd consecutive year -- the longest active streak for any college -- a Trojan has been selected in the top three rounds. On the second day of the draft two more former USC football players came off the board. In the second round with the 54th selection the Los Angeles Chargers picked defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu, allowing the nation's sack leader to stay home in LA to start his NFL career. Standout USC cornerback Mekhi Blackmon was taken with the No. 102 overall pick to close out the third round. He joins former teammate Jordan Addison in Minnesota. The third day of the draft had one more Trojan go off the board. The Baltimore Ravens selected Andrew Vorhees No. 229 overall, using their seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on the powerful offensive lineman who tore his ACL during the NFL Combine. Several players also signed as undrafted free agents after the draft. Defensive lineman Brandon Pili signed with the Miami Dolphins, offensive lineman Bobby Haskins signed with the Chicago Bears, wide receiver Terrell Bynum signed with the Los Angeles Chargers and running back Travis Dye signed with the New York Jets. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler also reported that tight end Josh Falo was invited to Jets rookie minicamp. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Trojans add a monster from the portal, former five-star DT Bear Alexander

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the huge news for the Trojans that broke over the weekend with former five-star defensive tackle Bear Alexander announcing that he will become a Trojan. Coming off a national championship season at Georgia, Alexander recently entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and from the jump USC was one of the top schools he was considering. On Sunday Trojan football fans got the good news that the next stop for Bear would be Los Angeles, helping to bolster a position of need for head coach Lincoln Riley and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. Alexander took an official visit to USC and apparently that was enough to convince the 6-foot-3, 315 pound defensive lineman to become a Trojan. He is the No. 12 player in the portal and the No. 1 defensive lineman according to 247Sports transfer rankings. He is also the fourth defensive lineman added to the roster this off-season, following Anthony Lucas (Texas A&M), Kyon Barrs (Arizona) and Jack Sullivan (Purdue). The guys also discuss what Riley had to say in his post spring Zoom call with the media late last week. He goes over the backup quarterback situation, the depth situation on the defensive line, what he liked about the run game, the ups and downs he saw from the defense, the rush end spot and lots more. They will also talk about the college football rule changes and how that could impact the Trojans, a new commitment for the 2024 recruiting class and the hype around the Colorado spring game with Coach Prime.
