Tunnel Vision: USC takes care of business against Notre Dame, fill face Utah for Pac-12 Championship
Sunday night Tunnel Vision is back with USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino along with intern Jack Smith in studio talking about this incredible run by Lincoln Riley and the Trojans, capping off an 11-1 regular season with wins over both rivals including Saturday night's controlling 38-27 victory over the Notre Dame. Quarterback Caleb Williams had four more touchdowns, including three on the ground, and set USC's season record for TDs by a quarterback with 44. His huge performance on a national stage has made him an overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman Trophy heading into the Pac-12 Championship game. Speaking of the conference title game, the Trojans now know they will get an opportunity to revenge their only loss of the season by playing Utah (9-3, 7-2 in the Pac-12) in Las Vegas Friday night. The Utes needed to beat Colorado, UCLA to beat Cal, Oregon State to beat Oregon and finally Washington to win the Apple Cup. All of that transpired over the weekend so Utah will have an opportunity to win back-to-back Pac-12 titles and knock the Trojans out of the College Football Playoffs. The guys talk about USC's huge win over the Fighting Irish, discuss their now very clear path to the school's first appearance in the CFP, what Caleb Williams needs to do (or not do) in order to win the Heisman and lots more. USC has already punched its ticket to Las Vegas but the Notre Dame game still looms large
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the highly emotional 48-45 win for No. 5 USC over UCLA in the Rose Bowl, a result that punched the Trojans ticket to Las Vegas for a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game against an opponent that has yet to be determined. But sitting at 10-1 USC still has a lot to play for in the final weekend of the regular season with No. 13 Notre Dame coming to town. A win against the Irish keeps USC alive in the College Football Playoff race and if that is followed by a conference championship the chances of making the four-team playoff field would be extremely high. The guys give their thoughts on what it was like Saturday night in Pasadena with players, coaches and fans showing an outpouring of emotions, talk about who the potential opponents could be in Las Vegas, look ahead to Notre Dame and the extra implications a win against the Irish would bring into play and lots more. Tunnel Vision: Trojans clinch Pac-12 Championship berth with an epic 48-45 win over rival UCLA
Sunday night Tunnel Vision is back with USCFootball.com's Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino along with intern Jack Smith in studio talking about one of the most memorable and exciting football games in USC history, a 48-45 Trojan victory over UCLA in the Rose Bowl that secured a trip to Las Vegas to play for the Pac-12 Championship in Lincoln Riley's first season. The 10-1 Trojans, now ranked No. 5 in the latest AP Poll, also keep their College Football Playoff hope alive with an opportunity to play two more ranked teams to end the season, No. 13 Notre Dame on Saturday followed by either No. 10 Oregon, No. 12 Utah or No. 14 Washington in the conference championship the following Friday. Two wins and the Trojans have an excellent chance at making the first College Football Playoff appearance in program history. The team talks about how crazy of a game this was, giving their perspective from being on the field at the Rose Bowl. A record performance for quarterback Caleb Williams who is front and center in the Heisman race and another huge turnover night for the USC defense including a game clinching interception for Korey Foreman. Where Coach Harvey Hyde ranks USC's 48-45 win over UCLA in Mount Rushmore of Rose Bowl games
This week on the Peristyle Podcast Coach Harvey Hyde and Ryan Abraham give their thoughts on a very special game for the USC football team, not just for the young Lincoln Riley era, but for the history of the Trojan football program and the Rose Bowl itself. After falling behind 14-0 early on, Riley and the Trojans fought back thanks to the arm of Caleb Williams, the legs of Austin Jones and the turnovers forced by USC's opportunistic defense, none bigger than former five-star Korey Foreman's interception of Dorian Thompson-Robinson during UCLA's last minute comeback attempt. The guys also talk about how injuries impacted the game with the loss of one very important player, running back Travis Dye, and the return of what turned into another very important player, wide receiver Jordan Addison. With Dye out for the remainder of the season Jones knew he would have to step up and he used Dye as inspiration, writing the No. 26 on his wrist in tribute to his fallen teammate. Jones didn't disappoint, rushing 21 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns and adding four catches on as many targets for 57 yards. And after a quiet return against Colorado last week Addison broke out big time, catching 11 passes on 13 targets for 178 yards and a 35-yard touchdown that Williams dropped perfectly into his arms down the right sideline. After the game the rush of emotions from players and coaches out on the field were tangible. The Trojans took the high road during the week and didn't make any comments about their hatred towards UCLA or what they planned to do, unlike DTR, who declared they would put up 60 on USC like they did last year. The guys took all of that in and let their play speak for itself Saturday night and when it was over there was an outpouring of emotion everywhere you looked. Players gathered around the Victory Bell taking their turns to ring it, putting up four's-down hand signals and joining in with the Trojan Marching Band as they played Tusk almost on repeat after the game. There were also long embraces between players and coaches including guys who had difficult journeys in their USC playing career to get to a place this high. Foreman stands out for sure, but guys like Kyle Ford and Tuli Tuipulotu and Calen Bullock who were on this 4-8 squad last year and are enjoying every minute of what Tuipulotu called their "revenge tour." Somehow in Riley's first campaign at Troy he has his squad in the Pac-12 Championship game after his 10-1 overall start and 8-1 in conference and there is even more to play for beyond a conference title. His Trojans, with a win over Notre Dame next weekend, will likely be playing for the program's first College Football Playoff berth in Las Vegas. If USC wins out and finishes Pac-12 champions at 12-1, it seems highly unlikely that the committee would leave the Trojans out. There is still a long way to go, but for all of this to be on the table in Riley's first campaign is remarkable. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Trojans gearing up for rivalry week against the Bruins
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the Trojans Friday night 55-17 blowout win over Colorado, the chaos in the Pac-12 that followed on Saturday and what it means for this USC football team that now controls its own destiny in the Pac-12 Championship race. Despite the slow start against the Buffaloes the Trojans found their stride on both sides of the ball, exploding for 24 points in the second quarter and then never looking back. This week the test is tougher and the stakes are higher with a trip up the 110 freeway to take on UCLA at the Rose Bowl. A win and USC is in Las Vegas vying for a conference title in Lincoln Riley's first season. Standing in their way is a Bruins squad that will be licking their wounds following the shocking defeat to Arizona over the weekend. Tunnel Vision: Trojans trounce Buffaloes and are one win away from playing for Pac-12 championship
Sunday night Tunnel Vision is back with USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham along with intern Jack Smith and special contributor Anthony Gharib breaking down the Trojans Friday night victory over the Colorado Buffaloes in the Coliseum. USC started off slow with just 8 yards of offense in the third quarter, trailing CU 3-2 after the first 15 minutes of the game. But the Trojans turned it on, scoring 24 unanswered points heading into halftime en route to a dominating 55-17 win. With the two big rivalry games looming, USC needed to get some momentum going and an overmatched Colorado squad was just what the doctor ordered. Unfortunately for the Trojans the win came at a cost with the team's top running back and emotional leader Travis Dye going down with a leg injury. Dye was mobbed by the entire team on the field before he was carted off and after the game head coach Lincoln Riley confirmed that Dye would be done playing for the season, but would still be contributing to the team in other ways. The guys talk about what Lincoln Riley had to say after the game, how Alex Grinch assessed the defensive performance and what the players talked about including Dye's leadership, Tuli Tuipulotu's production and Calen Bullock's athletic interception. Coach Harvey Hyde on USC's 55-17 win over Colorado and the devastating Travis Dye injury
This week on the Peristyle Podcast Coach Harvey Hyde and Ryan Abraham talk about USC's 55-17 win over Colorado in the Coliseum on Friday night. The Trojans needed to build some momentum heading into the rivalry games and they were able to do that with a 38-point win, but it came with a cost, losing running back Travis Dye for the rest of the season. Dye went down with a leg injury in the second quarter and had to be carted off the field in an air cast. After the injury he was surrounded by every single player on the team, showing their support for one of the unquestioned leaders on this squad. Coach talks about what Dye meant to this program and how they will try and fill the void at running back going forward. Coach also talks about why it is great winning on a Friday night, allowing you to watch the rest of your opponents play on Saturday from the comfort of your own couch. He says it was also a great opportunity for this Trojan defense to play with an overmatched opponent and give that side of the ball some confidence and momentum heading into a tough test against UCLA this coming weekend. Speaking of UCLA, with Oregon's loss head coach Lincoln Riley knows his Trojan squad can make the Pac-12 Championship game if they take care of business Saturday evening in the Rose Bowl. A win over the Bruins guarantees a trip to Las Vegas for USC and an opportunity for a conference championship after last year's 4-8 season. USC looking to make a statement against Colorado
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the Trojans narrow 41-35 win over California and looking ahead to the important Friday night match-up with Colorado. The Buffaloes are not a great program right now and the Trojans are a 34-point favorite, but for Lincoln Riley this game represents the opportunity to potentially get some players back from injury and more importantly try to fix the defensive issues before facing off against UCLA and Notre Dame to close out the season. The guys talk about what was said by Riley, defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and the players during this short week including the latest injury update that could mean USC fans get to see wide receiver Jordan Addison and linebacker Ralen Goforth back out on the field. Tunnel Vision: Trojans secure homecoming win over Cal but defensive concerns loom
Sunday night Tunnel Vision is back with USCFootball.com's Shotgun Spratling and Ryan Abraham along with intern Jack Smith breaking down the Trojans homecoming victory over the California Golden Bears Saturday night in the Coliseum. USC was one again without the services of wide receivers Jordan Addison and Mario Williams and linebackers Eric Gentry and Ralen Goforth but did see the return of Korey Foreman and offensive lineman Andrew Vorhees. The USC offense punted five times, but still was able to put up 41 points behind 100-yard receiving games by Tahj Washington and Michael Jackson III. But the defense started poorly and finished worse, allowing Cal QB Jack Plummer to throw for over 400 yards, 128 more yards than his season high. The guys talk about what Lincoln Riley had to say after the game about being very proud of getting win No. 8 and how hard victories are to come by, while also acknowledging that they didn't play their best on offense, defense or special teams. This week on the Peristyle Podcast Coach Harvey Hyde and Ryan Abraham are back together again talking USC's 41-35 home win over California. Coach Hyde talks about not really being able to put a finger on what is going on with this team despite the obvious improving going from 4-8 last year to an 8-1 start this season. For the second week in a row the Trojans played an overmatched opponent and failed to put them away, with both Arizona and Cal having onside kick opportunities at the end of the game to pull off the upset. Coach Harvey Hyde gives his Halloween takes on USC's win over Arizona
This week on the Peristyle Podcast Coach Harvey Hyde and Ryan Abraham are back together again talking USC's 45-37 road win over Arizona. It was another impressive performance for the Trojan offense including quarterback Caleb Williams who had a personal best 411 passing yards and five more touchdown passes, giving him 10 over the past two road games. The defense was another story with over 500 yards surrendered yet again, but Coach Hyde thinks a lot of that had to do with great Arizona offense as opposed to poor USC defense. Tunnel Vision: Recapping the Trojans 45-37 win over the Wildcats in Tucson
Sunday night Tunnel Vision is back with USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino along with intern Jack Smith breaking down the Trojans bounce-back victory over the Wildcats in Tucson. USC had a bye week to heal up after the physical road loss to Utah but was still without the services of wide receivers Jordan Addison and Mario Williams, linebackers Eric Gentry and Ralen Goforth, rush end Korey Foreman and offensive lineman Andrew Vorhees. Even though Arizona is an overmatched opponent on paper, losing your top-two receivers, top offensive lineman and top linebacker on the road would be challenging for most teams. The guys talk about how Lincoln Riley and his squad were able to overcome those losses (plus some extra adversity courtesy of the Pac-12 officials) and still secure what he called his most proud victory of the season. Quarterback Caleb Williams had yet another All-American like performance with a career high 411 passing yards and 5 more touchdowns to give him 10 TDs over the past two road contests. They also discuss what was another rough outing for the defense, giving up over 500 yards yet again including 141 yards and three touchdowns to Wildcat receiver Dorian Singer. Trojans survive in Tucson, defeat the Wildcats 45-37
In this special airport edition of the Peristyle Podcast host Ryan Abraham chats with Chris Trevino following USC's 45-37 road victory over Arizona. Chris was in Wildcat Stadium to witness the game in person and he chats with Ryan from the Tucson airport about everything he saw and heard from the Trojans victory. The guys discuss what was a record-breaking night for quarterback Caleb Williams who threw for a career best 411 yards and 5 touchdowns, giving him 10 touchdown passes over the last two games (both on the road). He put up those crazy numbers despite not having his top-two receivers in the lineup with him as both Jordan Addison and Mario Williams made the trip but did not play against Arizona. Williams also had a shuffled offensive line protecting him with Andrew Vorhees out, Justin Dedich moved to his spot at left guard, Jonah Monheim moved from right tackle to Dedich's place at right guard and Mason Murphy making his first start at right tackle. Defensively it was yet another game giving up over 500 yards, something defensive coordinator Alex Grinch can't be happy about. USC was without linebackers Eric Gentry and Ralen Goforth and rush end Korey Foreman and the defense wasn't able to overcome the losses, allowing 7.9 yards per play to the Wildcats. And of course the guys discuss another horrendous call by Pac-12 officials that caused head coach Lincoln Riley to go on a tirade, yelling at the officials as the team was heading into the locker room for halftime. Tunnel Vision: Previewing the No. 10 USC Trojans at the Arizona Wildcats
Thursday night Tunnel Vision returns with USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, R.J. Abeytia and intern Jack Smith previewing USC's game against Arizona. Both teams are coming off losses over the bye week with USC falling to Utah 43-42 in Salt Lake City and Arizona coming up short at Washington 49-39. The Wildcats have one of the most explosive offenses in the conference with Washington State transfer quarterback Jayden de Laura pulling getting the ball to a host of great receivers, but on defense the Wildcats are one of the worst units in the Pac-12 and will have to try and slow down Caleb Williams, Travis Dye and an extremely potent USC offense. Can the Trojans stumble in Salt Lake City propel this team to a Pac-12 Championship run?
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio digesting the Trojans heartbreaking 43-42 loss to Utah in Salt Lake City. The setback certainly stings but the guys talk about whether or not they feel that this USC football team can bounce back and use it as a motivating factor going forward, propelling them to a potential conference championship in Lincoln Riley's first season. They also breakdown what they saw and heard from USC's Tuesday morning BYE week practice and give some early assessments of what USC can expect for the next game, a road trip to Tucson to take on the Arizona Wildcats. Arizona can certainly put points on the board so it could be another difficult task for this struggling Trojan defense, but the offense should flourish against the Wildcats who have surrendered exactly 49 points in each of their three conference losses. Tunnel Vision: Recapping the Trojans tough 43-42 loss to the Utes in Salt Lake City
Sunday night Tunnel Vision is back with USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino along with intern Jack Smith breaking down the Trojans heartbreaking 43-42 loss to the Utes. The USC offense came out of the gate with a bang, scoring touchdowns on its first three drives despite dealing with the intense crowd noise at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The defense was a different story, failing to get stops and having no answers for quarterback Cameron Rising and tight end Dalton Kincaid. The guys talk about what went right and what went wrong in Salt Lake City, how the Pac-12 officiating impacted the game and if head coach Lincoln Riley could have done anything differently down the stretch. Quarterback Caleb Williams had an All-American like performance, completing 25 of 42 passes for 381 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran for 97 positive yards including a 55-yard scamper in the first quarter, but his total rushing yards was 57 because of 40 yards lost in sacks. Jordan Addison and Mario Williams led the way for the receivers, combining for 11 catches for 251 yards and a touchdown. Linebacker Eric Gentry was USC's leading tackler with 9 stops and one forced fumble. This is a podcast version of our video show Tunnel Vision that you can find on our Fac ebook or YouTube pages. Halfway though the season the Trojans sit at 6-0 with tough Utah trip pending
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the Trojans 30-14 victory over Washington State, bringing their record to 6-0 at the halfway mark of the regular season. The guys talk about what went right in the game (defense, run game, special teams) and what wasn't clicking (passing game), injuries and what the players and head coach Lincoln Riley and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch had to say after the win. Defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu has been an absolute beast this season, securing three more sacks and four more tackles for loss against the Cougars over the weekend. Travis Dye also had a monster night on the ground with nearly 150 yards and another touchdown. They also breakdown what they saw and heard from USC's Tuesday morning practice of Utah week and give some early assessments of what USC can expect for a difficult road test in Salt Lake City. Tunnel Vision: Recapping the Trojans 30-14 victory over Washington State
Sunday night Tunnel Vision is back with USCFootball.com's Shotgun Spratling and Austin Green along with intern Jack Smith breaking down the Trojans 30-14 win over the Cougars. With half of the regular college football season in the books the guys talk about USC's 6-0 start under head coach Lincoln Riley including 4-0 in the Pac-12 after sweeping the "state" schools in Oregon State, Arizona State and Washington State. It was another amazing performance by Trojan defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu who picked up four tackles for loss including three sacks. He helped USC's defenders limit the Cougars to just 49 passing yards and zero points after halftime. Offensively the passing game wasn't clicking so the Trojans relied on Travis Dye who ran for nearly 150 yards and a touchdown. Even special teams got into the fun with the best overall performance by the USC kick units of the season. Coach Harvey Hyde impressed with USC's defensive effort
This week on the Peristyle Podcast Coach Harvey Hyde and Ryan Abraham are back together again talking about the Trojans hitting the halfway mark of the season at 6-0 following a 30-14 victory over the Washington State Cougars in the Coliseum. USC is now bowl eligible after missing the postseason last year with a 4-8 record and head coach Lincoln Riley is showing that his squad can win a number of different ways. On Saturday night his Trojans showed they can win with a defensive that doesn't create turnovers, an offense that relies on the ground game and special teams that do the right things and put the team in better field position situations. Tunnel Vision: Recapping the Trojans 42-25 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils
Sunday night Tunnel Vision is back with USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino along with intern Jack Smith breaking down the Trojans 42-25 win over the Sun Devils. It may not have been as clean as some USC football fans would have liked, but it was 17-point victory over a conference foe that brought the team to 5-0 already surpassing the team's win total from a year ago. The guys talk about the offense getting back on track thanks to quarterback Caleb Williams' epic night with four total touchdowns and nearly 400 yards of offense, Travis Dye finding the end zone two more times and receiver Jordan Addison eclipsing the 100-yard mark yet again. The guys also talk about the defensive performance that left a lot to be desired, especially in the first half. But Alex Grinch's squad was able to bounce-back after halftime and really force the issue with pressures, tackles for loss and eventually Calen Bullock's interception that ended the Sun Devils' final threat. Plus nagging special teams concerns have grown into a potential problem with way too many yards of field position being surrendered in the kicking game. Tunnel Vision: Previewing the 4-0 USC Trojans hosting the 1-3 Arizona State Sun Devils
Thursday night Tunnel Vision returns with USCFootball.com reporters Shotgun Spratling and R.J. Abeytia and intern Jack Smith previewing USC's game against Arizona State, the third conference contest and first Pac-12 game in the Coliseum for head coach Lincoln Riley. The guys talk about how the struggling Trojan offense can use this opportunity to get back on track against a reeling ASU squad that recently fired its head coach Herm Edwards. Typically USC has been on the wrong end of games where an interim coach has been involved since the Trojans were typically the team that had recently fired their head coach. This week the role is reversed with Herm Edwards out and Arizona State being run by interim head coach Shaun Aguano. The guys go over how this Arizona State squad has looked so far in 2022 (not good) and where things could get dangerous for USC if the Sun Devils somehow get all of their ducks in a row. Peristyle Podcast - No. 6 Trojans survive Corvallis and return home to "get right" against ASU
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the Trojans narrow 17-14 victory over Oregon State up in Corvallis. It was a bit of a role reversal for Lincoln Riley's squad with the defense leading the charge while the offense sputtered most of the night, getting things going just enough in the final quarter to pull out the victory. On the defensive side Alex Grinch and his squad held OSU to just 14 points and one of those Beaver touchdowns came on an extremely short field when Oregon State started at USC's 22 yard-line in the fourth quarter. The defense again came up with some key stops but also again forced turnovers, this time it was four interceptions including the game sealer by Max Williams with just seconds left on the clock. Remarkedly the Trojans defense have forced a turnover on 33% of opponents drives this season (14 overall turnovers). Offensively everyone is wondering (including us) why quarterback Caleb Williams was struggling so much. The offense looked out of sync with plays breaking down faster than expected and when they didn't Williams seemed to rush anyway. The main highlight was Oregon transfer running back Travis Dye who had his 3rd-straight 100-yard performance as a Trojan. The offense does have an excellent shot at getting back on track this weekend with Pac-12 foe Arizona State coming to the Coliseum. If ever the USC offense needed a "get right" game it was this one and the Sun Devils are so bad they will likely accommodate. They also breakdown what they saw and heard from USC's Tuesday morning practice of Arizona State week and give some early assessments of what USC can expect with ASU in town. This was the first true road test for Lincoln Riley and the Trojans and while it wasn't pretty, it was a hard-fought victory that Coach Hyde calls a "character" win for this football program. The guys talk about what the defense was able to do including four more forced turnovers, why Coach Hyde thinks quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense struggled and what he means by this being a "character" victory.
