Pac-12 moves quickly to eliminate divisions for championship game purposes

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to discuss the breaking news that the Pac-12 will no longer send the two division winners to the conference championship game and will now select the teams with the top-2 winning percentages to play for the title, regardless of which division they play in. That ruling could have a significant impact on Lincoln Riley and the Trojans considering Utah, a division rival with USC, returns most everyone from their Pac-12 championship team in 2022 and the Trojans face the Utes in Salt Lake City this season. Couple that with the North being much more wide open with half of the teams (Oregon, Washington and Washington State) having new head coaches and there is a very probable scenario that has Utah and USC processing the two best records in the Pac-12, allowing them to rematch in Las Vegas with the conference championship on the line. The guys also talk about the new CBS/247Sports poll that ranked the top college football coaches at the Power Five level, with USC's Lincoln Riley coming in at No. 4 behind Nick Saban, Kirby Smart and Dabo Swinney. They talk about the top-10 coaches and Chris tests Ryan to see how many of them he could name (he got 9 out of the 10 right) with Utah's Kyle Whittingham being the only other Pac-12 coach to make the top-10. The USC roster continues to get reworked with a couple more additions from the NCAA Transfer Portal, JUCO offensive lineman Cooper Lovelace and Washington defensive back Jacboe Covington. The guys talk about what those two players bring to the table and where they can fit in on the Trojans roster. They also discuss the biggest name yet to decide where he will transfer, former Pittsburgh wide receiver Jordan Addison. Will Addison head west and finish his college career at USC or head to Texas or Alabama? The guys debate it on the show. Transfer Portal-Palooza Tracker and spring game recap

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to put a bow on USC's spring football game in front of a Coliseum spring game record crowd of over 33,000 that was shown live nationally on ESPN. Head coach Lincoln Riley wanted to showcase all of the work the players and coaches put in over the past five weeks and in our opinion they accomplished that objective. The entire atmosphere around the Coliseum was extremely welcoming with events for all of the fans in attendance and the product on the field was also intriguing, with two live 15-minute halves of football that gave the feeling of an actual game. The new players were finally introduced to Trojan fans (and the media) and everyone came away from the game with a better understanding of who those players are and how this team could potentially look when they kick off against Rice on September 3. Quarterback Caleb Williams came in with a lot of hype and he delivered, throwing a pair of touchdown passes to his former Oklahoma teammate Mario Williams. Former SEC linebackers Shane Lee and Romello Height also made positive impressions with their play on the field and leadership off of it. Former Pac-12 stars like former Oregon running back Travis Dye, former Stanford running back Austin Jones, former Colorado wide receiver Brenden Rice and former Washington receiver Terrell Bynum all looked good wearing Cardinal and Gold, giving the Trojans more weapons and more depth while draining some of the talent from the rest of the conference. The guys also dig into the pending NCAA Transfer Portal deadline of May 1, looking at some of the players Riley could potentially add before fall camp starts and how fast and furious things could get over the coming weeks and months. Trojan spring football rolls on with first Coliseum practice of the Lincoln Riley era

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to discuss the Trojans first Coliseum spring practice of the Lincoln Riley era, giving all of the new coaches and players their first taste of football in USC's historic home. They discuss what Riley and the other coaches and players said about being able to practice in that environment and how Riley wants to see the Coliseum full for the spring game and of course when football season starts in September. The Trojans are now done with 10 of their allotted 15 spring practices and Riley wants to focus on the team finishing strong. "Losers coast, average programs coast," Riley said. There will be no coasting to the finish for the Trojans as they have one more practice and scrimmage in the Coliseum before the spring game in front of fans on April 23 at noon, shown live in ESPN. Tuesday's Coliseum practice also held live periods where the team scrimmaged. We were unable to watch those portions of practice but afterwards Riley said that it was back-and-forth between the offense and the defense with the offense getting the early jump, the defense finishing strong and overall he said the defense won the day. The guys also talk about a bunch of new names that have been gold-plated, given their Trojan logo helmet sticker for the work they have put in on the practice field and meeting rooms. Former USC quarterback J.T. Daniels has found a new home, reuniting with former USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell at West Virginia. Daniels had visited Oregon State which would have given him the opportunity to play against the Trojans in 2022, but with his commitment to WVU he will now get to play against the player that replaced him in 2019 following his knee injury, new Pitt quarterback Kedon Slovis. Such is the soap opera that is college football. With the loss of five-star OT Josh Conerly to Oregon, USC will now have to look to the NCAA Transfer Portal to shore up the offensive line after spring ball. On Wednesday another potential option entered the portal, Texas A&M lineman Derick Hunter who played for USC offensive line coach Josh Henson. Ryan and Chris will be doing regular podcasts together going forward, so make sure you send in your questions addressed to them at [email protected]. Coach Harvey Hyde on USC's more physical spring and the gold-plated incentive for players

Coach Harvey Hyde returns with Ryan Abraham to breakdown where the Trojans are after three weeks of spring football practices under head coach Lincoln Riley. Coach Hyde likes what he has seen so far, especially the fact that the practices are much more physical and the overall mentality of the team is different. USC is now more than halfway through the spring with just 5 practices left before the spring game on April 23, something Coach Hyde is really looking forward to seeing. The guys also get into a little recruiting talking about the disappointing decision of five-star offensive tackle Josh Conerly picking the Ducks over the Trojans followed by some good news with a four-star linebacker commit from the class of 2024, Long Beach Poly (Calif.) linebacker Dylan Williams, committing to the Trojans. Trojans scrimmage for the first time this spring

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to discuss the Trojans first scrimmage period of spring football, getting the lowdown from the offensive players and coaches after Tuesday's workout. The guys talk about how the offense came out stagnant early in the scrimmage before coming together and turning things around. Quarterback Caleb Williams broke off a long run and tight end Malcolm Epps caught a touchdown in the redzone. Speaking of Williams, he talked to the media on Tuesday and said that he was going to try and focus on taking off and running less, with an emphasis on staying in the pocket and finding the open man. He talked about running too much last season, but also said there were times where he stayed in the pocking waiting for a receiver to break free of the coverage when he should have cut his losses and just ran for whatever yards he could. Williams was also asked about his number, No. 13, that happens to be shared by wide receiver Michael Jackson. Neither player knew what the outcome will be, but we do know at least one of them will have to switch numbers before the season starts because you cannot have two players with the same number on the same side of the ball. The guys also talk about the tight end position after talking to tight ends coach Zach Hanson plus Jude Wolfe and Malcolm Epps following Tuesday's practice. As of now it looks like Epps has been holding down the 'Y' position, playing out wide, while Wolfe has handled the H-back spot (with Epps said he handled that spot like a grown man). We heard from Hanson about how those guys have progressed plus he gives his thoughts on the team coordinating special teams by committee. Quarterback Miller Moss had some interesting things to say about USC's offense this year compared to last year. He said the team currently has been performing well in the red zone as opposed to last year, dropping the nugget that they never really worked on red zone offense before. The guys also talk about the latest players to be "gold-plated" and what receiver Kyle Ford said about the receivers blocking more this spring. Ryan and Chris will be doing regular podcasts together going forward, so make sure you send in your questions addressed to them at [email protected]. Heard It on the Sidelines: Josh Conerly Jr. recruiting decision w/ national editor Brandon Huffman

Shotgun Spratling talks with 247Sports national recruiting editor Brandon Huffman about the upcoming decision and commitment of five-star Seattle (Wash.) Rainier Beach offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. Huffman talks about the type of prospect Conerly is, why he decided to put in a Crystal Ball for USC on the offensive lineman and why he won’t equate Conerly to a Shaun Cody or De’Anthony Thomas type of recruit for the Trojans no matter if Conerly chooses USC or another school. USC spring football - talking offensive line in full pads and new player practice incentives

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to discuss the first open to the media full-pads spring football practice for the Trojans. After two practices in helmets and jerseys, the USC football team was in full pads for their Saturday (closed) and Tuesday (partially open) workouts. With offensive players and coaches available on Tuesday, the focus moved away from the skill players and honed in on the big guys up front, the offensive line. Head coach Lincoln Riley went in depth about his thoughts on the offensive line, a group with a lot of experience that still has a way to go to learn the new offensive system brought in by Riley and company. We also discuss what offensive line coach Josh Henson had to say about his unit, including who the current starting five players are, and we hear from several of those starters to get their thoughts on adjusting to a new offense. The guys also dive into some of the other topics from USC spring practice like Riley talking about adding double-digit players to the roster after spring football ends. USC currently has 76 players on scholarship and with more defections probable, it gives Riley more room to add players from the NCAA Transfer Portal. Ryan and Chris were each able to talk to a new assistant coach for the first time this spring, interim inside wide receivers coach Luke Huard and tight ends coach Zach Hanson. They also discuss some of the candid comments made by running back Darwin Barlow, comparing the complexity of last year's offensive system to this year's. Lastly the guys share an interesting tidbit they learned from talking to offensive lineman Courtland Ford, a new practice incentive program for USC football players. According to Ford, if a player performs well at practice he will get a "gold plate" for his helmet. We originally thought he meant some sort of helmet sticker system like other programs use, but apparently it is a type of enhancement to the current USC Trojan logo on the side of the player's helmet. The guys talk about breaking away from tradition here and if implementing a system like this would be a positive or a negative. Ryan and Chris will be doing regular podcasts together going forward, so make sure you send in your questions addressed to them at [email protected]. Recapping the Trojans first day of spring football plus USC Pro Day

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to break down all of the news and notes from the highly anticipated first day of USC spring football. New head coach Lincoln Riley has been at the helm about 100 days and on Tuesday he got his first opportunity to see his new squad practicing officially on Howard Jones Field. Riley called his roster one of the most unique in college football history with tons of turnover and new additions out of the NCAA Transfer Portal. The guys talk about what Riley had to say about not being finished with his retooling of the roster, with 10 or more players to be added between now and the start of fall camp in August. The guys also talk about the offensive position groups, starting with the quarterbacks and highly touted Oklahoma quarterback transfer Caleb Williams. The media was able to talk to Williams for the very first time in a USC jersey and the true sophomore did not disappoint, holding court in front of a large group of reports. Williams showed off his infectious personality and showed why he was able to come in and establish himself as a leader on this team despite only being on campus for a little over a month. They also talk about the running back room that is down to three scholarship backs at the moment and the wide receivers where several high profile transfers came in, including Mario Williams from Oklahoma. They also talk about the USC Pro Day which featured 15 former Trojan football players including potential first rounder Drake Jackson (who looked much bigger than he did just a few months ago). There was still no Drake London due to his injury, but he plans on doing his own workout on campus in early April. USC spring football schedule revealed plus running back Brandon Campbell hits the transfer portal

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to discuss the details of the newly released USC spring football practice schedule that includes more media availability than they thought, but certainly less access than they have seen in year's past. The media will be able to watch the first 20 minutes of 10 of the 15 spring practices and then after the workout some players and coaches will be available to interview. On the closed Saturday practices head coach Lincoln Riley will talk to the media via Zoom, answering questions about how practice went. USC spring practices start on March 22 and run through the ESPN live televised spring game on Saturday, April 23. Fans will be permitted to attend the spring game in the Coliseum, but they will not be allowed to view any of the other practices this spring. The Trojans will also hold a closed Pro Day on Wednesday, March 23. The guys also talk about the latest Trojan football player to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, redshirt freshman running back Brandon Campbell. With the departure of Campbell USC will only have three scholarship running backs available this spring, all of which are transfers from other programs. Campbell came in with a group of Texas players and coaches, many of whom are no longer with the program. We felt he may stick it out and see where he stands after five weeks of spring football practices, but he decided to pull the trigger early, enter the portal and try to find a new home to continue his college career. Chris Trevino and Ryan Abraham project what USC's 2022 depth chart will look like for the spring

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back again breaking down USC's roster position by position and projecting what the football depth chart will look like heading into spring football 2022. There are several new faces from high school and the NCAA Transfer Portal that will be making a splash for the Trojans and in many cases replacing players that moved on to the NFL or transferred out of the program. Ryan and Chris go up and down the roster giving their thoughts on which players will start and compete for playing time in Lincoln Riley's first year as head coach. The guys also discuss the breaking news that Trojan quarterback Mo Hasan, after fully recovering from knee surgery, injured his Achilles and will not be able to compete during spring practice. The unfortunate injury to Hasan likely means more surgery and rehab for the transfer from Vanderbilt and leaves the Trojans with just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster at the moment. They also discuss the huge recruiting weekend for the Trojans with high profile prospects from all over the country coming to Los Angeles for Junior Day and the USC basketball team getting beat by Arizona (with Riley and quarterback Caleb Williams in attendance).
