Helium (Halloween) Boys: USC gets scare in Berkeley, can Trojans beat No. 5 Huskies?

The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino reuniting to react to USC's off-the-rails 50-49 win at California in this Halloween edition of the Helium Boys Podcast. They break down the back-and-forth battle with the Golden Bears that was settled by a defensive stop of a two-point conversion attempt, improving the Trojans to 7-2 on the season. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including the dynamic defensive impact of Eric Gentry, USC actually sticking with the run game for four quarters and how Bear Alexander's presence in the second half completely transformed the defense. Throughout the episode, Chris also plays a game, stopping the action to ask Shotgun to react to a spooky fact or guess the horror film a quote is from. The Helium Boys Halloween episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' as each gives his initial reactions to the Trojans' win over Cal and the biggest things that stood out. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who/what impressed, including USC's fight and the rising expectations being greater than the appreciation for fans. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend such as nickelback Jaylin Smith and the rising number of plays Lincoln Riley says the Trojans need to fix on each side of the ball. Chris and Shotgun also look forward at the "really cool opportunities" the Trojans have in front of them, starting with a matchup against No. 5 Washington Saturday in the Coliseum, featuring a showdown between last season's Heisman Trophy award winner Caleb Williams and the current favorite for the 2024 Heisman Trophy, Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter, email and Instagram discussing Lincoln Riley/Alex Grinch, the defense, Halloween costumes and Halloween candy. Then during the overtime portion of the 'Take It or Leave It' section, Chris questions Shotgun on the top candy in a variety of states. Finally, the podcast concludes with the Helium Boys giving their score predictions for the USC-Washington matchup (4:30 p.m. PDT) in the Coliseum this weekend. Coach Harvey Hyde sees a lack of discipline with this Trojan team coming off the 50-49 squeaker against California

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing what was a fitting end to a longstanding rivalry with Cal, a 50-49 Trojan victory that featured an on-field protest that delayed the start of the game, an untimed down after halftime before the third quarter started and a spectacular two-point conversion pass defense that sealed the victory for USC. Coach Hyde talks about the lack of discipline he has seen on this team, from penalties (11 for 101 yards for USC) to missed assignments to lack of attention to detail, and how that is going to need to change to have a chance at winning any of the remaining three games on the schedule. Players need to perform the assignment they are given and coaches need to stick with what is working and not get away from successful strategies. Coach Hyde wants to see more consistency and concentration from everyone in the program, from the players on the field to everyone on the sidelines. On that untimed down played before the start of the third quarter, Coach Hyde says he has never saw a play like in all his years coaching and watching college football. He also said that USC has the skill players to be a great offense with one of the top running backs in the country in MarShawn Lloyd, of of the top quarterbacks in Caleb Williams and great receivers, but doesn't see any identity in the offense right now. Coach wants to see things be more balanced to make it harder on opposing defenses instead of the Trojans are making it harder on themselves. On defense Coach feels like those turnovers were the key to getting the win. Somehow the defense made Fernando Mendoza look like Aaron Rodgers. There were gaping holes in the first half for the run game with guys taking the long gap. Second half was better with Eric Gentry playing better and Bear Alexander returning. Too many penalties on the secondary players. Coach says that the special teams problems are all about discipline, staying in lanes, when to run it out, not trying to be a star just go by the rules of where you are on the field. All of these mistakes in the kicking game are not acceptable and coach says you will lose games when you can't do those little things on special teams. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Tunnel Vision: The final weekender was anything but boring as USC escapes with a 50-49 win at Cal

On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back together again in studio fresh off their Bay Area trip for what will likely be the very last USC weekender for the foreseeable future, an instant classic where the Trojans narrowly escaped with a 50-49 victory over the Sturdy Golden Bears. USC once again started off the game strong before allowing Cal to jump out to multiple two-score leads, including a 14-point fourth quarter lead that looked like the end for the Trojans. USC regained the lead thanks to a Cal fumble and when the Bears drove to tie the game with under a minute left, head coach Justin Wilcox decided to end it right there with a two-point try. Jaylin Smith made the defensive play of the day, batting away the pass in the end zone to preserve the one point victory for the Men of Troy. The guys talk about this crazy game that started with an on-field protest, had a halftime controversy that allowed USC to attempt a first half field goal right before the start of the third quarter and of course the dramatic ending that kept the Trojans hopes of a Pac-12 title technically alive. Tunnel Vision: Trojans hit the road to take on long-time rival Cal

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio to preview what needs to be USC's get-right game, a road trip to Berkeley to take on the California Golden Bears. This season Cal has actually been sneaky good on offense, especially the ground game, but not as stout on defense. The Trojans have struggled most of the season on defense and lately the offense has been much more pedestrian. Can USC finally turn things around and get a much needed win against this long-time rival? Jack and Connor talk about what a weird week of practice it was, with Lincoln Riley out sick for a couple of days before returning on Wednesday. Riley addressed the media and talked about pushing himself too hard before the Utah game and several other topics. They also discuss what defensive coordinator Alex Grinch had to say about what went wrong in the Utah game. Both hosts will be in the Berkeley for this one and talk about how they think it will play out and give their picks against the spread (Trojans are favored by a 10.5 points). No real answers on USC's defensive struggles plus Lincoln Riley out sick

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about what is turning out to be a strange week around the USC football program, with back-to-back losses and now head coach Lincoln Riley unable to attend practice due to an undisclosed illness. Riley was coughing before he addressed the media after the Utah game and he came out alone instead of with the usual two players alongside him (no players were made available after the game). Riley also didn't make his normal Monday appearance on Trojans Live and then on Tuesday we were informed that Riley was home sick per doctor's orders and there was no timetable given for his return. The guys talk about how practice felt on Tuesday with Riley's absence and outside wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons taking over. They also discuss what defensive coordinator Alex Grinch had to say after the defense's terrible performance against Utah where the Utes had their season high of yards (482) and safety Sione Vaki went off catching 149 yards in passes and two touchdowns. Helium Boys: Utah victorious again, but has the pressure been relieved for 2023 Trojans?

USCFootball.com's Helium Boys, Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino, were reunited over the weekend and are back together to try to break down and make sense of USC's 34-32 loss to Utah in this edition of the Helium Boys Podcast. They react to the Trojans' first loss at the Coliseum under Lincoln Riley, a defeat to dreaded Utah on a field goal as time expired, that drops them to 6-2 on the season and all but guarantees USC will not be able to make the College Football Playoff in the final season of the four-team era. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including USC's refusal to lean heavily on its run game, the emotions that poured from Bear Alexander after his late targeting penalty, whether or not the Trojans should have gone down at the 1-yard line and the decision by Lincoln Riley to not make any players available to the media. The Helium Boys open with the 'Two-Minute Drill' giving their initial reactions to the Trojans' loss to Utah and the biggest things that stood out to each of them. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who impressed, including Romello Height, the Branch brothers and the revamped offensive line. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend like the trust in the run game and the two-point conversion play calling, including the attempted use of cut blocking by the offensive line. They also look at how the collapse of College Football Playoff goals will affect the team going forward and whether this could be a situation that releases the pressure from players, allowing them to go out and have fun and play to their potential going forward. Chris and Shotgun also look at the upcoming matchup against California and the Golden Bears grab bag of quarterbacks. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter, email and Instagram discussing the defense and the overall vibe of the team. Then during the overtime portion of the 'Take It or Leave It' section, Chris questions Shotgun on the top five and bottom five fruits. Finally, the podcast concludes with the Helium Boys giving their score predictions for the USC-Cal matchup (1 p.m. PDT) in Berkeley this weekend. Coach Harvey Hyde is not seeing a product out on the field that Trojan football fans can be proud of

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing what was an inexcusable Trojan loss to the Utes in the Coliseum. Utah came in without their star quarterback or best pass catcher and still was able to put up 482 yards of offense on the USC defense, the Utes highest total of the season. Safety Sione Vaki got whatever he wanted in the passing game, torching the Trojans for nearly 150 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Bryson Barnes had his best game of the season including a 26-yard run that set up the game winning field goal. Coach Hyde and Ryan talk about how week after week this USC defense allows opponents to accomplish new heights and achieve high water marks, something that simply shouldn't be happening to a team with championship aspirations. Coach Hyde thinks this team is simply unsound on defense and they are asking players to do impossible tasks like having rush end Braylan Shelby to rush the passer but also cover the speedy Vaki on a wheel route of of the backfield. That is not sound football. Hyde says there is always a breakdown somewhere and it is due to bad discipline not only on defense, but from what he's seeing throughout the football program. You never want to beat yourself and with bad discipline USC did exactly that on the final drive for Utah. Coach Hyde thinks Lincoln Riley is a great playcaller with an amazing track record but right now quarterback Caleb Williams isn't making the plays he was last season. Coach thinks that defenses have adjusted and that Riley needs to as well to help Williams have the kind of success he had last season. He doesn't think Riley believes in the run game and he wants this team to be more physical to become a championship level team. Overall Coach Hyde feels bad for the fan base, a group of loyal Trojans who want to be proud of, not embarrassed because of, the product out on the field. With all of the problems on this USC football team, its hard for fans to be proud of what they are seeing. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Tunnel Vision: Lincoln Riley loses in the Coliseum for the first time and falls to 0-3 against Utah

On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith are in studio discussing the first ever loss in the Coliseum during the Lincoln Riley era, a 34-32 heartbreaker at the hands of Utah. After the game winning field goal as time expired, Riley and quarterback Caleb Williams are now 0-3 against the Utes over the past two seasons. After getting blown out on the road against Notre Dame, USC was looking to bounce back and get some revenge against a Utah squad that was extremely banged up. Backup quarterback Bryson Barnes stepped up his game, completing 14 of his 23 passes for three touchdowns and one interception and safety Sione Vaki dominated on offense with 9 rushes for 68 yards and 5 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns. The Utes had 482 yards of offense, their highest total of the season. The Trojans offense had success running the ball with MarShawn Lloyd and Austin Jones rushing for nearly 10 yards a pop, but the duo only got 12 carries which limited their impact. Williams was 24 of 34 for 256 and didn't have a touchdown but did have the go-ahead TD scramble late in the fourth quarter. Tunnel Vision: Trojans return to the Coliseum for an all-important clash with Utah

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith, RJ Abeytia and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio to preview USC's most important game of the entire regular season, a conference home matchup against Utah, the team that defeated the Trojans twice last season including the Pac-12 Championship game. The No. 18 Trojans of course had a rough go of it at Notre Dame while the No. 14 Utes pulled away from California in Salt Lake City. The guys talk about this pivotal game for head coach Lincoln Riley and give their thoughts on USC's struggling offense against what could be an elite Utah defense and a potentially resurgent Trojan defense against heaving injured and mostly one dimensional Utes offense. All three hosts will be in the Coliseum for this one and talk about how they think it will play out and give their picks against the spread (Trojans are favored by a touchdown). Helium Boys: Leprechauns? USC falls flat in South Bend and moving forward to Utah Week

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return with a speed version of the Helium Boys Podcast following USC's trip to South Bend for its annual matchup with intersectional rival Notre Dame. The Helium Boys react to the Trojans' first loss of the season, a 48-20 loss to Notre Dame where the Irish won the turnover battle, 5-0, and were able to win in the trenches. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including the troubles with the offensive line and what possible solutions there are for fixing the issues in front of quarterback Caleb Williams, who threw a career-high three interceptions -- all under duress -- and was sacked six times. Normally, the Helium Boys open with the 'Two-Minute Drill' giving their initial reactions to the Trojans' latest matchup, but this is the speed version. The 'Two-Minute Drill' was shortened to the 'One-Minute Drill' after the show's offensive coordinator called back-to-back running plays and wasted our timeouts. The speed version also incorporates a modified Stock Up/Stock Down section with the podcasting duo discussing who impressed, including Christian Roland-Wallace, the Branch brothers and Tackett Curtis. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend such as the offensive line, the Heisman Trophy winner and the Trojans' special teams. Chris and Shotgun also look at the Trojans' highly anticipated upcoming matchup against nemesis Utah this weekend after the Utes were able to hand Lincoln Riley and Williams two of their three losses last season. The Helium Boys use your submissions during the 'Take It or Leave It' section and then answer your USC mailbag questions, picking a couple to dive into before the timer goes off. Finally, the podcast concludes with the Helium Boys giving their score predictions for the USC-Utah matchup (5 p.m. PDT) from the Coliseum this weekend. Can the Trojans get back on track with Utah coming to town?

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio giving their analysis following USC's 48-20 loss to Notre Dame, looking at what went wrong and if the Trojans can get back on track with an important game against Utah coming up. Both Connor and Ryan were in South Bend for this debacle of a game that generated a wave of concern across the Trojan fan base that knows there are no breaks in this tough back half of the schedule for USC football. They give their thoughts on what they saw and heard and how much this suboptimal Trojan effort impacts their prognosis for the rest of the 2023 college football season. Head coach Lincoln Riley remains optimistic that this is a team that can turn things around, fix the issues and win the Pac-12 conference. The guys talk about what Riley had to say after the game, during his Trojans Live appearance and also after practice on Tuesday and if they agree with his assessment of this 6-1 USC football squad. They also heard from defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and several players and they discuss what everyone else had to say following this tough loss. Looking forward, two-time defending conference champion Utah comes to the Coliseum on Saturday and the guys talk about the level of importance that rests on this contest considering Riley lost to the Utes twice last season and need to bounce back from their worst effort of the season. Coach Harvey Hyde calls USC's 48-20 loss to Notre Dame embarrassing and a difficult one to swallow for Trojan football fans

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing what turned out to be the largest margin of defeat for the Trojans during the Lincoln Riley era, a 48-20 beatdown at the hands of Notre Dame. A huge factor in the loss was the fact that USC turned the ball over five times, including a career high three interceptions for Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Caleb Williams, and surrendered a kickoff return for a touchdown. Coach Harvey Hyde talks about how this was an extremely difficult weekend for USC fans, seeing their team go down hard on a national stage in a historic rivalry with thousands of Trojans making the trip to South Bend. He also said it was embarrassing for fans to watch how this team played, getting dominated in all three phases but especially the offense and special teams units. It was a painful experience and there is no time for the team to lick its wounds with Utah coming into the Coliseum this weekend. The Coach talks about how the USC offense couldn’t get anything going, with the offensive line struggling making Williams look uncomfortable and a run game that just couldn’t generate consistent production. Notre Dame played a lot of man defense and limited the separation for USC’s wide receivers, making it even tougher for Williams to find someone while under pressure. Defensively the squad did play better, but it was against a more limited Fighting Irish offense. Special teams were a major issue and one that doesn’t seem to be improving as the season advances. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Tunnel Vision: Trojans take one on the chin in South Bend against archrival Notre Dame

On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Connor Morrissette, Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are in studio discussing what ultimately became a disastrous road trip for the Trojan football team over the weekend. USC fell 48-20 in a beatdown at the hands of arch rival Notre Dame. USC quarterback Caleb Williams had the worst game of his career throwing three first half interceptions, which all led to Notre Dame touchdowns. The Trojan defense took a step forward, but the unit was unable to bail out a bad night from USC's offense. The Trojans ultimately lost the turnover battle to the Fighting Irish 5-0. EMERGENCY PODCAST - USC's turnover frenzy leads to 48-20 loss at Notre Dame

In this EMERGENCY edition of the Peristyle Podcast USCFootball.com's team of Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith, Connor Morrissette, Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino recorded their thoughts about USC's 48-20 loss at Notre Dame in the car on their drive back from South Bend to Chicago (at 2 in the morning). The guys take turns giving their thoughts on what went wrong as the Trojans turned the ball over five times to the Fighting Irish's zero, allowed six sacks and 11 tackles for loss while only generating one TFL and no sacks and the backbreaker, giving up a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that put any chance of a late comeback out of reach. They also discuss what head coach Lincoln Riley and quarterback Caleb Williams had to say after the disappointing loss, the only two players or coaches that spoke to the media after the game. As this was literally recorded in the car driving in the middle of the night, we apologize if the audio quality isn't as high as our usually shows recorded in studio. Tunnel Vision: Previewing USC's Midwest road trip to South Bend to take on Notre Dame

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith, Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio to preview what will be No. 10 USC's toughest test to date, a road trip to South Bend to take on No. 21 Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are playing their fourth ranked team in a row, going 1-2 over that stretch, and desperately need a win against USC to get their season back on track. The Trojans are a perfect 6-0 but the play on the field has been far less than perfect, so a win against a ranked opponent would go a long way to quieting the critics (at least partially). The guys talk about everything they saw and heard from USC practice and media availability this week which featured a lot of talk about the state of the Trojan defense plus injury status for freshman wide receiver Zachariah Branch and the overall health of the cornerback position. All three hosts are heading to Chicago on Friday for this one and they give their thoughts on how they think the game will go. Interestingly enough, through the first six games USC was at least a three touchdown favorite in every contest (covering only twice) and this weekend the Trojans come in as a three point underdog. The great debate about the USC defense heading into the Notre Dame game

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio discussing the hottest topic surrounding the Trojan football team, the performance of the USC defense at the halfway point of the season. From the outside many of the same issues this defense had last year appear to still be there, breakdowns in coverages, poor tackling and the inability to get stops late in games. But hearing from Lincoln Riley and players and coaches, their view is the defense is much improved over last season. Ryan and Connor give their thoughts on how the defense is trending after six games as USC is now heading into its most important and difficult stretch of the season. They also give an injury update including wide receiver Zachariah Branch as well as cornerbacks Domani Jackson and Christian Roland-Wallace. USC head coach Lincoln Riley told reporters that Branch and Roland-Wallace weren't full participants but Jackson was. The guys also look ahead to the biggest game of the season to this point, a tough road trip to archrival Notre Dame. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Helium Boys: USC is 6-0 after 3OT win, but are the Trojans progressing each week?

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return with the Helium Boys Podcast following a wild 3OT battle between USC and Arizona. The Helium Boys react to the Trojans' 43-41 triple overtime win over the Wildcats where a slow start and continued flaws nearly cost USC its pristine record and likely would have if Superman Caleb Williams didn't put the team on his back. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including who is to blame and what needs to be fixed to get USC heading in the right direction after three subpar performances in a row. They open with the 'Two-Minute Drill' giving their initial reactions to the Trojans' late-night victory in the Coliseum. The duo then breaks down the hold-your-breath and hold-your-beer moments with Stock Up/Stock Down, discussing who impressed, including the Heisman Trophy winner making a push for No. 2 by using his legs and a handful of defenders that stood out. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend such as the physicality in the trenches, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Chris and Shotgun also look at the Trojans' upcoming rivalry matchup as they head halfway across the country to take on Notre Dame in South Bend this weekend. The Helium Boys also answer your USC mailbag questions, which cover a number of varied topics from the defense and missed tackles to Caleb Williams and offensive playcalling. Finally, the podcast concludes with the "Take It or Leave It" section centered around things from USC's triple-overtime win, including special teams play and the new overtime format, as well as sugary concoctions that may have to change their formulas in California. The Helium Boys also give their score predictions for the USC-Notre Dame matchup (4:30 p.m. PDT) from Indiana this weekend. Coach Harvey Hyde thinks USC has too much talent for that type of performance against Arizona

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing another clunker of a game for the Trojans, this time a 43-41 triple overtime victory over unranked Arizona at home in the Coliseum. Coach Hyde, as usual, has some strong opinions on how this USC football team performed late Saturday night against the Wildcats. Early in the game when the offense wasn't clicking and wide receivers were not getting open, he wanted to see head coach Lincoln Riley start using the backs and tight ends in the passing game. Coach Hyde also wanted to see the Trojans commit to the run game with Arizona dropping more defenders back into coverage. On the defensive side of the ball Coach Hyde thinks there are still too many rotations going on and he wants to see fewer players coming in and out of the game. He was also concerned that backup quarterback Noah Fifita had so much success against this USC defense, to the tune of 302 yards and five passing touchdowns. In general Coach Hyde doesn't want to see things be so complicated for the Trojans, he wants to see USC get back to basics so there isn't any confusion for the players on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. After the game quarterback Caleb Williams once again said every team that plays USC is giving them their best shot, it is a game that all opponents circle on their calendars. Coach Hyde talks about that and how a blueblood program like the Trojans has to deal with being a target week after week. At the end of the day, the Trojans did just enough to win the game, but he feels that this roster has too much talent stacked up to deliver this type of performance at home against an unranked opponent. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Tunnel Vision: Trojans somehow survive in triple overtime against the Wildcats

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith, Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are in studio discussing one of the wildest USC football games in recent memory, a 43-41 triple overtime victory over Arizona late Saturday night in the Coliseum. Right out of the gate, the Trojans looked out of sorts from the jump on offense, defense and special teams including three-straight 3-and-outs for Caleb Williams and the offense and three-straight scores allowed by the defense. USC, which hadn't trailed at all through the first five games, was down 17-0 early in the second quarter with the game on the verge of being out of hand. When the offense finally started to get on track with a huge pass to Brenden Rice, momentum shifted once again when Williams fumbled on the next play. Jacobe Covington made the play of the day with his interception, giving USC life and more importantly a short field. Williams was able to cut the deficit to a field goal at halftime, keeping the game from getting out of hand. The guys talk about the Trojans comeback in the second half, that included an 8-point lead early in the fourth quarter, including USC's botched field goal attempt to win the game at the end of regulation and Williams winning the game in the third OT on his weird looking quarterback keeper play. More questions than answers about USC's defense heading into the Arizona game

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette are back in studio talking about how the Trojans are undefeated and scoring 40+ points a game, but still have major questions on the defensive side of the ball. After coming out of the game early in the San Jose State, Nevada and Stanford games, quarterback Caleb Williams has had to play until the final whistle on the road at ASU and Colorado because the USC defense hasn't been able to get stops late in the game. We've heard from head coach Lincoln Riley and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch following Tuesday's practice and both coaches addressed the Trojans defensive issues in the second half in Boulder. The guys talk about what the Riley, Grinch and the defensive players had to say about the shortcomings of the defense and the challenges they will face against an very potent Arizona offense. Riley said the focus this week has been on two fronts, tackling better on the perimeter and keeping the quarterback in the pocket. They also talk about the player rotation on the defensive side of the ball including what Riley said about inside linebacker Eric Gentry slowing working his way back into the rotation following his injuries and time away from the field. On the injury front they talk about safety Max Williams and wide receiver Zachariah Branch missing the Colorado game but being on track to play against Arizona according to Riley. Helium Boys: USC survives Colorado and quicksand for 5-0 start

The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino back behind the microphones to react to USC surviving their final trip to the mountains of Boulder, Colo. and the quicksand that nearly consumed the Trojans in the second half of a 48-41 win over the Buffaloes. The duo discuss the notable takeaways, including who is to blame and what needs to be fixed to get USC back on track. Shotgun and Chris open with the 'Two-Minute Drill' giving their initial reactions to the Trojans' win at Colorado, including Chris' take on the atmosphere for the 10 a.m. local kickoff. The duo then breaks down the hold-your-breath victory with Stock Up/Stock Down, discussing who impressed, including the Caleb Williams to Brenden Rice connection and the potential of kissing Heismans as well as multiple USC defenders that showed out despite the foibles of the defense as a whole. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend such as the Trojans' "the longer it goes, the better we get" motto that has been what they have carried with them throughout the offseason.. Chris and Shotgun also look at the Trojans' upcoming matchup with Arizona this weekend, and the troubles the Wildcats could present after pushing USC until the end last year in Tucson. The Helium Boys also try to answer your USC mailbag questions of which there were many! They cover a number of topics, which primarily focus on the defensive side of the ball and the Trojans' deficiencies. Finally, the podcast concludes with the "Take It or Leave It" section centered around things USC can improve going forward and whether the Trojans should be on trap-game alert. Tunnel Vision: After giving up 41 points to Colorado, there is no defense for this Trojan defense

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio breaking down the Trojans near collapse in Boulder, a 48-41 win over Colorado where USC's 27 point lead got wiped away by Shedeur Sanders and the Buffaloes offense. The USC defense actually looked good early on in the game, limiting most of Sanders' passes to underneath routes and forcing the Buffs to methodically move the chains. But towards the end of the first half Sanders orchestrated another slow and effective drive that was capped it off with his 25-yard touchdown run up the middle, making the score a much more respectable 34-14 at halftime and giving Colorado some desperately needed momentum. The Trojans struck first in the second half and at 41-14 halfway through the third quarter the game seemed out of reach, but Colorado scored touchdowns on 4 of its last 5 possessions and USC failed to score in the fourth quarter. What should have been a blowout ended up being an onsides kick away from a Cotton Bowl level implosion in Boulder. Coach Harvey Hyde wants to see Lincoln Riley get more involved in USC's defense

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing the near epic collapse in Boulder where the Trojans had a 41-14 lead and had to hold on and recover an onsides kick to escape with a 48-41 victory. Ryan was at Folsom Field for the game and the 100 year old stadium had some issues trying to accommodate the over 1,000 media requests, the most for a game in CU history. The Coach Prime effect is real and while the Buffaloes media relations people tried their best, the program grew too much and too fast to handle the wave of publicity that Deion Sanders brought to Boulder. The game itself was unsatisfying for everyone, USC fans were upset that the defense failed to slow down Colorado late in the game and Buffs fans saw a chance for victory fall just short. Coach Hyde talks about how winning is the most important thing, but you want to be able to be proud of your performance and it would be hard to do that after this game. Both Coach and Ryan got Cotton Bowl vibes from this one, with Colorado nearly duplicating the improbable comeback Tulane had back in January. Coach feels USC got lucky to get out of there with a win after dominating early before everything went to heck. He also felt it was a shame no one was talking about Caleb Williams and his 403 yard, 6 touchdown performance, because the defense was so bad. Williams through five games has 24 total touchdowns and last season at this time he only had 15. The majority of the episode discusses USC’s defensive struggles and Coach Hyde thinks opposing offenses are doing a good job of exploiting the Trojans weaknesses, luring defenders up before hitting them over the top for explosive plays. There are a lot of areas for concern but Coach specifically talks about the excessive cushion given in the red zone being one of the major flaws. He also thinks tackling is still a big problem as well as the inside linebacker play. He wants to see more people flying around to the football and he sees guys that aren’t and wants to know why others are not in there showing what they can do. Most importantly Coach wants to see Lincoln Riley get more personally involved in this defense and address some of the deficiencies. He would also like to see offensive analyst Kliff Kingsbury get involved and do some self scouting of the defense and tell Alex Grinch where he thinks the holes are and where improvements can be made. At the end of the day with this collection of talent on defense, the whole is less than the sum of its parts and that is on coaching. Both Ryan and Coach Hyde think USC could have a much better defense with the talent assembled, so it's time to make that happen or get someone who can. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Tunnel Vision: Previewing USC's highly anticipated trip to Boulder to face Coach Prime and Colorado

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio and ready to preview one of the more highly anticipated games of the young 2023 college football season, a road trip to Boulder where Lincoln Riley, Caleb Williams and the 4-0 No. 8 ranked USC Trojans will face Deion Sanders, Shedeur Sanders and the 3-1 Colorado Buffaloes. USC is coming off a sloppy 14-point win over Arizona State in Tempe and Colorado is trying to bounce back from an unsuccessful trip to Eugene where the Ducks had their way with the Buffs. The guys will give their thoughts on this game, including the extremely early 9 a.m. PST kickoff time, Big Noon Kickoff pregame show being there and the media circus that surrounds the most talked about figure in college football, Coach Prime. On paper USC's strengths line up pretty well with Colorado's weaknesses, specifically the Trojans can run the ball well where the Buffaloes have a hard to stopping the run plus SC's pass rush has been elite this season and CU has given up the most sacks among Power Five programs. The guys give their thoughts on USC's struggles in the desert and talk about what changes they would like to see heading into another tough road environment in Boulder next weekend. Should USC football fans be concerned heading into Boulder?

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and new USCFootball.com senior staff writer Connor Morrissette are in studio LIVE breaking down the state of the Trojan football program following a less than impressive 42-28 victory over a struggling Arizona State squad in Tempe. Should USC football fans be concerned with a road trip to Boulder to take on one of the most talked about college football programs in the country, the Colorado Buffaloes? Connor and Ryan give their thoughts on what they liked from the Trojans effort in the desert and what gives cause for concern. An "off" day for Caleb Williams still produced five touchdowns and the much maligned defense still generated eight sacks and 14 tackles for loss. The guys talk about all of that plus player rotation, special teams highs and lows, the overall health of the team, playing on the road in back-to-back weeks, the early kickoff time with the Big Noon Kickoff pregame on hand and of course they preview what they expect to see from Coach Prime and Colorado. Helium Boys: Undefeated USC survives first road trip, now prepares for Deion Sanders and Colorado with defensive questions

The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino reuniting to react to USC surviving its first road trip of the season and final trip to the desert for the foreseeable future with a 42-28 win over Arizona State. The duo discuss the notable takeaways from the closer-than-expected victory and assess where the Trojans' defense stands following an unsatisfying performance. Shotgun and Chris open with the 'Two-Minute Drill' giving their initial reactions to the Trojans' win over the Sun Devils and then break down the victory with Stock Up/Stock Down, discussing who impressed, including MarShawn Lloyd electric performance averaging 11 yards per carry and Romello Height making a huge impact with his first two career sacks and a fumble recovery. The boys also give a special shoutout to kicker Denis Lynch after his big game on Saturday was followed by him being awarded a scholarship Monday. They also dive into who and what saw their stock take a dip, most notably the inexplicable absence of Raesjon Davis on defense. The Helium Boys also look at the Trojans' upcoming matchup with Colorado this weekend and the battle between two coaches that are perhaps the biggest villains on the national landscape. Coach Harvey Hyde not happy with what he saw from USC's effort in the desert

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC's 42-28 win over Arizona State in Tempe, the first road game for the Trojans this season and the first time Lincoln Riley and company were not comfortably ahead heading into the fourth quarter. Overall Coach Hyde was not impressed with USC's effort in Tempe, especially when the Trojans were coming off a bye week and the Sun Devils had just laid an egg the week before, falling the Fresno State 29-0 at home. Coach Hyde starts out talking about how surprising that game was to him considering how easily USC handled Stanford at home in the previous game. The Trojans were a five-touchdown favorite and Hyde wanted to see this team come out hungry, chomping at the bit to get back out on the football field after having the week off. He wanted to see this team be prepared and ready to take on a hostile environment and come out of the tunnel showing dominance from the jump. That didn't happen. Hyde feels that USC didn't coach or play a good game, he thought the offense looked out of sync, Caleb Williams didn't look like he was pleased with what was going on and the defense wasn't physical and tackled poorly. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Chris Trevino and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back from Arizona and in studio to recap USC's 42-28 road win over Arizona State. For the first time this season the Trojans didn't have the game securely in hand by the third quarter and had to scratch and claw with a Sun Devils squad that was struggling coming into Saturday night. Quarterback Caleb Williams accounted for all five USC touchdowns, three through the air and two on the ground, and receiver Brenden Rice finished with 7 catches for 133 yards and two TDs. Former Sun Devil Eric Gentry led the Trojans with 9 tackles and the USC defense, while struggling at times, did account for 8 quarterback sacks and 14 tackles for loss. The boys look at what to expect from USC going on the road for the first time this season and what needs to be seen from the Trojans in the desert. They then dive into USC's next opponent, Arizona State, who is suffering through an unbelievable (but not unprecedented as Chris assures) spate of injuries, particularly at the quarterback position where the Sun Devils were down to their fourth-string QB in a 29-0 loss to Fresno State last week. The Helium Boys also discuss the state of college football as a whole and the wide-open national championship landscape in a year of increased parity. Trojans head into the first bye week on a high note

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and new USCFootball.com senior staff writer Connor Morrissette are in studio LIVE talking about USC's 3-0 start in which the Trojans put up at least 50 points in their first three games for the first time in program history. Of course Lincoln Riley and company got blowout wins against San Jose State and Nevada before cruising by Stanford on Saturday for the first conference win of the season. The guys talk a little bit about the blowout victory over Stanford before shifting forward to what the Trojans are trying to accomplish during this rare early bye week. With no game on Saturday, the USC football team still has a "normal" week of preparation only a slightly tweaked (earlier) practice schedule and the same media availability. On Tuesday we heard from Riley plus defensive coordinator Alex Grinch talking about what they have seen from the first few games of the season plus some of the defensive standouts. Two of the hot topics highlighted were trying to cut down on the unnecessary penalties and limit explosive plays on defense. There was also some discussion on the new interview that Riley did with Graham Bensinger in which he revealed that when he decided to leave Oklahoma there were attempts to break into his house, his desire to retire by age 50 and how his original parking spot at USC was too far away from the football facilities. Helium Boys: USC destroys Stanford in display of dominance

The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino reuniting to react to USC's thoroughly dominant 56-10 blowout of Stanford that moves the Trojans to 3-0 on the season. The Helium Boys discuss the notable takeaways from the blowout win and the conclusion, for all intents and purposes for now at least, of a nearly 120-year rivalry. Shotgun and Chris open with the 'Two-Minute Drill' giving their initial reactions to the Trojans' destruction of the Cardinal and then break down the victory with Stock Up/Stock Down, discussing who impressed, including Bear Alexander's continued mauling in the interior of the defensive line and pressure off the edges helping to create multiple turnovers for a defense that had only one entering its third game. The boys also take a look at the bigger themes that are being developed like the lightning strikes that are popping off across the Coliseum every time the Trojans take the field. They also dive into who and what saw their stock take a dip. The Helium Boys also preview what the Trojans will do with their bye week and what should be the primary focuses with an open weekend so early in the season. A podcast of the people, the Helium Boys also answer your USC mailbag questions about topics spanning from Zachariah Branch's total touchdown total and what it would take for him to be a Heisman finalist to who have been the biggest defensive playmakers through the first quarter of the season. Tunnel Vision: USC shows absolutely no mercy to longtime rival Stanford

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio discussing what was a merciless beatdown of longtime rival Stanford. The Trojans scored early and often and built up a 49-3 halftime lead that included seven different Trojans finding the end zone and over 400 yards of offense. With the backups in for the third and fourth quarters USC cruised to a demonstrative 56-10 victory over the Cardinal. Stanford was USC's longest running series and with the Trojans off to the Big Ten next season and the Cardinal heading to the ACC, Saturday night's matchup will likely be the last time these two programs play for years to come. Ryan talks about the sad ending to the rivalry with no Stanford band halftime show making fun of the Trojans, no Stanford tree bouncing around the sidelines, essentially no Cardinal fans in the stands, no "Stanford countermarch" performance by the Trojan Marching Band and no Cardinal players on the field that good enough to even keep it close. The guys also talk about how Lincoln Riley and his squad showed the killer mentality through the first three games heading into the bye week and how he was pleased with all three phases of the game in the first half Blitzkrieg against Stanford. Coach Harvey Hyde is still waiting for this USC team to be tested

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC's third-straight blowout win of the season, a 56-10 destruction of the Stanford Cardinal Saturday night in the Coliseum. Once again the Trojans were a heavy favorite and as was the case last week they were able to easily cover the 29-point spread, winning eventually by 46 points including a 49-3 edge at halftime. Coach Hyde starts out talking about how far this Stanford Cardinal program has fallen and why they are so bad. He thinks it is embarrassing for those who follow the team and those legends of the game that were associated with it, guys like Andrew Luck and Christian McCaffrey to John Elway and Bill Walsh. Coach Hyde feels that there is no way for a program to fall this far this fast unless there was a plan in place to do so or someone in power didn’t care. College football is changing and it doesn’t appear that anyone in the Stanford athletic department is willing to change along with it. Stanford’s fall isn’t USC’s concern and Coach Hyde would give the Trojans an ‘A’ grade after the 56-10 humiliation. USC could do anything it wanted in the first half and sometimes you face an opponent that isn’t capable of putting up any opposition and when that happens, it isn’t your fault. Coach liked that the Trojans just plowed ahead and ran their plans and continued to play their game. The only thing he would have changed was he would have kept the starters in longer, not because he wanted to pile on Stanford, he just doesn’t want to see the team let its guard down and lose momentum, something that happened for the Trojans in the second half. Coach Hyde thinks that is a way to lose your edge so he would have kept the starters in a little longer into the third quarter before taking everyone out. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Tunnel Vision: Trojans to open conference play against their oldest rival, the Stanford Cardinal

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio taking a look ahead at the last ever Pac-12 conference opener for the Trojans, a Saturday night showdown with the Stanford Cardinal. Stanford is USC's longest running rivalry and with the move to the Big Ten along with the Cardinal heading to the ACC, this is the last time these two teams will play for the foreseeable future. The guys talk about what they have seen from Stanford in their road victory over Hawaii and some of the Cardinal players that have the potential to make big plays against the Trojans. They also discuss what USC players and coaches were talking about this week after practice, including how important the rivalry with Stanford, slowing down the pass rush of David Bailey and the new-look Stanford offense that still utilizes the tight end at a high level. USC's offensive line depth takes a hit with Gino Quinones out for the season

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and new USCFootball.com senior staff writer Connor Morrissette are in studio LIVE talking about the unfortunate injury to USC offensive guard Gino Quinones. After Tuesday's practice of Stanford week head coach Lincoln Riley told the media that Quinones suffered a lower leg injury and was going to be out for the season. The guys talk about Quinones not only being on the short list to start at one of the guard spots but also his important role as the backup center to veteran Justin Dedich. They also discuss what the players and coaches had to say about facing this new-look Stanford team led by new head coach Troy Taylor and how this is potentially the last time these two rivals play for a long time with USC heading to the Big Ten and Stanford going off to the ACC in 2024. Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch also spoke on Tuesday and the guys talk about some of the defensive improvements they have seen and some of the standout players that Grinch talked about. They also talk about how linebackers Shane Lee and Raesjon Davis stepped up and what Grinch wants to see freshman linebacker Tackett Curtis do differently after being ejected for targeting. Looking ahead to Stanford, Ryan and Connor give their initial thoughts on the Trojans first conference game of the season, facing a potentially dangerous opponent that just got a road win at Hawaii last weekend. Helium Boys: USC defense shows improvements against Nevada; Trojans ready to start Pac-12 play

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return with the Helium Boys Podcast to react to USC's defensive improvements in a 66-14 victory over Nevada that moves the Trojans to 2-0 on the season. The Helium Boys discuss the notable takeaways from the blowout win and why what we've seen in the first two games should still be taken with a bit of skepticism and a grain of salt. Shotgun and Chris introduce a new 'biggest takeaway' segment called the 'Two-Minute Drill' and then break down the victory with Stock Up/Stock Down, discussing who impressed, including a number of offensive players that contributed to an eight-touchdown outing as well as the defense that produced a touchdown of its own. The boys also take a look at the bigger themes that took a step towards being developed in the opener and what has to be cleaned up in Pac-12 play, which starts this weekend for the Trojans when they take on their oldest 'rival,' Stanford. The Helium Boys also preview this week's matchup against the Cardinal, who the Trojans could be playing for the last time in the foreseeable future thanks to conference realignment with USC moving to the Big Ten next July and Stanford recently having announced it is heading to the Atlantic Coast Conference with California and SMU. This Cardinal team won't resemble the Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw teams that focused on pounding opponents with a downhill, old-school rushing attack and big-bodied wide receivers and tight ends, but Stanford still does have some of those weapons with 6-foot-5 receiver John Humphreys and dynamic 6-foot-4 tight end Benjamin Yurosek. A podcast of the people, the Helium Boys also answer your USC mailbag questions about a number of topics spanning from the defending elite tight ends to the future impact of freshman pass rushers Braylan Shelby and Elijah Hughes as well as discussing the insane workload Colorado's Travis Hunter had in the Buffaloes' upset of TCU. Finally, the podcast concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some "Take It or Leave It" prompts both from the Trojans' win over the Wolf Pack, including touchdown celebrations, as well as around college football in Week 1 with grilling and weather phenomena both featured. Coach Harvey Hyde loves seeing the USC defense having fun during the 66-14 dismantling of Nevada

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC's second blowout win of the season, a 66-14 beatdown of the Nevada Wolf Pack Saturday afternoon in the Coliseum. Again the Trojans were a heavy favorite and this time they were able to easily cover the 38-point spread, winning eventually by 52 points. Coach Harvey Hyde starts out talking about the impressive weekend the Pac-12 had, going 12-0 with some huge road wins like Colorado over TCU, Oregon State over San Jose State, Washington State winning at Colorado State and Stanford, USC’s next opponent, getting a win at Hawaii. With the entire conference looking better, it should make the Trojans drive to become Pac-12 champions a little more challenging. Offensively Coach really liked what he saw, saying that that side of the ball looked much improved and in rhythm. He didn’t feel that Caleb Williams was all that happy after the San Jose State game and he was able to do just about anything he wanted as USC gained 668 yards on just 54 plays. MarShawn Lloyd caught the coach's eye and he loved to see him excel as a runner and as a receiver. He also felt the offensive line played well and for the most part kept Caleb safe from being hit. On the defensive side coach loved to see a defense that was having fun out there, playing disciplined, hard and loose. He felt the pass rush was generating much more pressure and they were able to fight off blocks and get into their tackling space quickly. He really liked what he saw from the linebackers, especially Shane Lee and Raesjon Davis who had to play a lot of minutes in this game due to injuries at the position and the targeting ejection of Tackett Curtis. Coach also feels that Nevada was trying to test USC’s corners and how much speed they had with deep throws, including that one early in the game that was a huge play for the Wolf Pack. That is something to watch going forward, other teams really wanting to test these cornerbacks with deep sideline passes. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts!
