S4 Ep 277#277: Growing and Building Legacy Businesses with Chantal Gatien

#277: Growing and Building Legacy Businesses with Chantal Gatien Today we are speaking with Marketing & Web Strategist Chantal Gatien. Chantal has run a successful digital marketing agency for the last 5 years. Through this time, she realized she was taking the power away from women who were wanting to run an online business. She was doing all the right things for them to grow their business but she soon realized that she wasn't empowering them to understand their own business. She now focuses on teaching women the technical side of running and scaling her online business through Designed to Scale with her partner Cora-Lynn Hazelwood. In this episode we discuss: 1) We talk about all things ownership, owning our choices and how powerful our stories are to share. "If we are not the problem then there is no solution because it's not ours to own", as Chantal so beautifully says. We can all shift from victim to ownership because that is when it all changes. 2) Chantal shares her story from being a recovering addict, to not finishing high school, to excelling in college and running a successful marketing agency. Where we start is not where we have to finish. We can truly change our story at any time. 3) Growth is about finding ourselves, elevating ourselves and about creating change. What was once attractive becomes something not as important and when that happens it is easier to let it go. S4 Ep 276#276: Are You Searching for Effortless?

In this "Monday mindset'' episode, I am sharing some thoughts on effortlessness. I am currently listening to the book, Effortless on Audible by Greg McKeown. He is also the author of Essentialism. This book is already hitting home for me and I wanted to share some concepts with you. In today's episode we discuss:1) So many times we get frustrated with something that takes so much repetition to learn before it even becomes effortless that we then stop long before we give it a chance to become easier. What habits in your life are effortless now? Are they the ones that serve you in moving forward in your life? 2) The steps to making something easier requires putting in the work to become less impossible, then easier, the easy and then ultimately effortless. How long does this take? Depends on how hard you want to work at it and how committed you are to doing the work? 3) What is something you want to become effortless? Write it down, commit to doing the work with it and then notice and see the changes happening. It is always you vs. you and it will never move forward if you don't stay committed in the process. S4 Ep 275#275: Overcoming Childhood Sibling Sexual Abuse with Jane Epstein

Today we are speaking with Advocate and Author, Jane Epstein. Jane is an advocate, educator, and sibling sexual abuse survivor. She educates public about the prevalence of child-on-child sexual abuse so parents understand why it is important we have body safety discussions with our children. Jane speaks publicly about the taboo subject of SSA (Sibling Sexual Abuse) and the devastating effects left behind for entire families. Jane spent 40 years in a continual state of dissociation, she was in and out of therapy, and despite marrying and being blessed with two children, she became depressed and suicidal. Sobriety and self-reflection led her to write her story, and that is where she encountered the answers. As she began, she googled "sibling sexual abuse," only to find one or two outdated sites, leading her to believe she was alone. In this episode we discuss: 1) What happens when we disassociate from our emotions, pain and trauma and how that can lead to so many other emotional and physical responses in our bodies. Even though these mechanisms are how we cope for the time being, it is never a long term solution. 2) The ongoing traumas and challenges that she experienced and how she had to break the patterns and turn to her faith to help her deal with her traumas. 3) The importance of forgiveness and how it can be healing in all areas of our lives. Forgiveness became such a beautiful gift to herself and that it overflowed into other areas of her life. S4 Ep 274#274: Building Unshakable Confidence with Shay Haddow

Today we are speaking with Confidence & Mental Performance Coach, Shay Haddow. Shay Haddow is an expert coach and speaker on confidence and mindset for female athletes. Having worked with hundreds of female athletes, parents, and coaches from across the country, she's empowering girl athletes to build unshakable confidence so they can live and play to their fullest potential. After overcoming her own struggles with confidence throughout her childhood and athletic career, Shay knew that it was her life's purpose to provide female athletes with the mentorship that she wished she had when she was younger. Shay has dedicated her life to empowering female athletes of all ages to uncover their greatest superpower of all, allowing them to break free from their limitations and live a confident, empowered life. In this episode we discuss: 1) Steps to improve our confidence, by being aware of the way we talk to ourselves, changing the words and replacing the negative words with more empowering words, and taking messy action to see results and learn as we grow. This allows us to improve our confidence. 2) The importance of supporting, listening and encouraging our young athletes and parents at this time especially during the pandemic. Their voices need to be heard and valued as their typical outlets such as sports are not as easily accessible for them. 3) The more we can pour into our youth to help them build their confidence, which also includes letting them fail, the more we can potentially build confident leaders for the future. 4) We can all move from reluctant to resilient in our lives and continue to pay it forward and impact others to show them what is possible. S4 Ep 273#273: Am I Doing Enough?

In this "Monday mindset'' episode, I am sharing some vulnerable thoughts on something that circles in my brain every single day, "Am I Doing Enough". Whether it is as a mom, parent, friend, family member, or entrepreneur, we tend to find ourselves in a continuous loop of wondering if we're doing enough. This means our mind is stuck in the cycle of "should" instead of remembering and focusing on what we are doing or completing. This is where we need to keep our mind, in the present moments and this takes a lot of practice, repetition and training. In today's episode we discuss:1) What is enough? The definition is "as much or as many of something as required." I would encourage you to ask yourself what is deemed as enough? Is there anything that you could define here and if so do it clearly to give yourself a benchmark to focus on. When you make a to-do list do you make it to have 100 items instead of your top 3 things? 2) Where can you delegate, hire someone else, ask for help or take it off your list altogether? What really matters? What activities will move you closer to where you want to be? What are your top values, your non-negotiables or what do you need to be your best self and do you have those activities in your calendar on a daily basis? 3) Where can you give yourself more grace, compassion or kindness? If you aren't sure, then ask yourself what you would tell a friend who is doing what you are doing on a daily basis? S4 Ep 272#272: Are you Reacting or Responding?

In this Friday Facts episode, I am sharing my thoughts on the difference between reacting and responding. There's a big difference between the two and without boundaries, self-care and being clear on your own values it's easy to find yourself in a constant state of reaction. When you react to everything you are using your energy to manage, control or fix someone else's behaviour. That is energy that you could be using to create change in your own life. In today's episode we discuss:1) Reaction is defined as a behaviour in a particular way in response to something else. It can be with hostility, opposition or a contrary course of action. This is not always a conscious choice, more like a subconscious reaction, yet it tends to be a pattern that we are stuck in or repeating. Parenting teens who are yelling back is a great example of this. Saying less is always more powerful and impactful. These reactions can also be adverse physiological or psychological reactions that literally take away from you and definitely don't create change in your life. 2) Responding is still technically a reaction, the difference is that it takes into consideration the desired outcome of the interaction. It takes into account your boundaries, self-care and the direction that you want the conversation or event to go. This tends to be an intentional or a conscious response. 3) A reaction may result in a positive or a negative outcome whereas a response is engineered to produce a positive or a negative outcome. Reacting is emotional and responding is emotional intelligence. Scripting is an incredible exercise that I am opening up for the month of June. I offered this exercise in December and after speaking with clients and listeners and based on the year we have had, I decided to open up the scripting workshop on June 23rd with a link to join. https://www.marshavanw.com/offers/ribbMmY8 Storytelling Bootcamp (we start in June)https://www.marshavanw.com/offers/sQ8UMqdY?coupon_code=EARLYBIRDSTORYBOOTCAMP Marsha Vanwynsberghe — Author, Speaker and Life CoachMarsha is the 6-time Bestselling Author of "When She Stopped Asking Why". S4 Ep 270#270: Your Comfort Zone is Not a Benchmark

In this "Monday mindset'' episode, I am sharing a message from a recent post I shared on social media. It hit home for so many people, myself included. Our comfort zone is a place so many of us stay in even though it feels so uncomfortable. Our soul is begging us to move, shift and sometimes even run because we know we are meant for something more. Yet we are using our comfort zone as a benchmark and not moving because everything feels foreign and new. Our comfort zone can never be a benchmark because everything outside of this space will feel new. Instead we need to embrace that all growth will feel different until we show up for it consistently and once we do that, then it is time to grow again. In today's episode we discuss:1) Every emotion you experience will be different outside of your comfort zone. When you are not used to being confident, then confidence feels like arrogance. When you are used to being passive, being assertive feels like you're being aggressive. 2) If you aren't used to prioritizing your own self care needs or respecting your boundaries, then as soon as you try to do this it will feel selfish. 3) This will also hit home if you are continuously comparing yourself to someone else and the success they are having in their own business or life. Everytime you tell yourself that "it's easy for them because x,y,z," then you completely negate your own ability and you have to be honest with yourself. Instead of judging them, hire them or ask them what they did to create those results. Don't judge someone else's results if you are not willing to do the work to get there. Your comfort zone is lying to you and you're choosing to buy it. S4 Ep 269#269: The How Isn't Up to You

#269: The How Isn't Up to You In this Friday Facts episode, I am sharing my thoughts on getting stuck on how when we are making decisions in our business or personal lives. The how isn't up to us and in fact believing that it is, means we are actually believing in only our own power. In fact when we buy into the how as the only way possible, we block all of the other possible ways for the magic to unfold. This message has proven itself over and over in my practice of scripting. This keeps my mind focused forward on what it wants to create without staying stuck on the how or the specific details of it. In today's episode we discuss:1) Focusing on the how limits all of the other incredible ways that something can fall together in our lives. The people, the opportunities or experiences that become available once we get into action. We create the opportunities by not limiting it to the how's that we know of. 2) Ask yourself the questions of what you want to create, who do you want to work with, what transformations can you help others create, and how you are open to all of the different ways that it can come to life. 3) Scripting is an incredible exercise that I am opening up for the month of June. S4 Ep 267#267: Vulnerability & Receiving Go Hand in Hand

#267: Vulnerability & Receiving Go Hand in Hand In this "Monday mindset'' episode, I am sharing my thoughts on vulnerability and receiving and how the two truly go hand in hand. Vulnerability is the courage to allow ourselves to be seen. When we are in a constant state of deflection, perfectionism or trying to do it alone, we are literally blocking any opportunity to receive. This is keeping us isolated in our story and not open to receiving and the process of receiving is literally how we expand and grow. In today's episode we discuss:1) Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it's having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome. Vulnerability is not weakness, it is our greatest act of courage...Brene Brown. It involves courage, strength and not being attached to the outcome or the results that we are creating. Being vulnerable means that we are open to asking for help, support or guidance to move ourselves to the next stage in our life or business. 2) When we don't allow ourselves to receive it can be for a number of reasons such as feelings of lack, unworthiness or feeling like there is no one else to support us on our journey. 3) When we fully receive compliments, money or anything, we are allowing ourselves to expand and receive more. At all times we are either growing and expanding or contracting. A huge part of this process is whether we are allowing ourselves to be vulnerable and receive what is available for us. S4 Ep 266#266: Your Calling is Not a Conference Call

#266: Your Calling is Not a Conference Call In this Friday Facts episode, I am sharing my thoughts on our calling and how we forget that it isn't meant to be understood by everyone. It is our calling, after all, not a conference call. It is time to get back to the things we are being called to do and trust that it is our calling for a reason. We are truly the ones to bring it to life. In today's episode, we discuss:1) Our calling is a really big term that people focus a lot of energy on and worry whether they have it right or not. We figure it out as we go and it is always changing or shifting as we learn and add in new experiences. 2) Ask yourself how much time and energy you are using to convince others of your calling and then not acting on it based on the thoughts and opinions of others? 3) What if the people who are meant to be part of the conference call to bring your vision to life are people you haven't even met yet? S4 Ep 264#264: You're Either Expanding or Contracting

#264: You're Either Expanding or Contracting In this "Monday mindset'' episode, I am sharing my thoughts on expansion vs contracting. Expansion is such a big word, it is inviting new people, experiences and situations, yet it is also a potentially scary feeling with so much unknown, fear and uncertainty. This is where growth happens because this is the only place it can happen. Expansion needs space to grow! In today's episode we discuss:1) Make a list with the words expansion on one side of the paper and contraction on the other. Look at all of the different experiences or times in your life where you expanded and what did it lead to? Build your own contrary evidence to disprove your negative or self-limiting thoughts. 2) Be honest and real about what you want to create and what will it require you to do? 3) Receiving allows us to expand even further. It is a process and sometimes it's easier than others. Embrace the fact that there's always room for more. Believe in the possibility of abundance and flow in your life and business. S4 Ep 261#261: I Had to Go First

#261: I Had to Go First In this "Monday mindset'' episode, I am reflecting and sharing my thoughts from writing my upcoming chapter in the Great Canadian Women series, She Moves Mountains. This was a very emotional journey and vulnerable as I dove into my life over the past 15 months and what I have had to overcome to make it to this point in my entrepreneurial journey. I am being real and raw on this episode in the hopes of inspiring you and sparking you to see that you have to choose to go first in your life too. In today's episode we discuss:1) How many times in our lives we have to go first, we have to step forward with no guarantee of what lies ahead for us. We do this because we know that we don't want to stay where we are and we don't want to go backward in our lives. 2) What this past year of the pandemic looked like for us, and how important it is to continue to practice empathy, patience, compassion and kindness with ourselves because everything we do or create in our life, comes from us first. It all stems from the relationship and belief that we have within ourselves. 3) I share the experience of back surgery, my rehabilitation process and how I had to learn how to put my needs, energy, health and wellness first. This was an exercise in trust, empathy and compassion like no other. S4 Ep 260#260: Life is a Blank Canvas with Craig Stanland

#260: Life is a Blank Canvas with Craig Stanland Today we are speaking with Reinvention Architect, Craig Stanland. After hitting rock bottom, Craig was forced to make a choice: give up or rebuild. He thought he had "it all" until he lost sight of what's truly important and made the worst decision of his life, losing everything along the way, including his own self-worth. Through the painful, terrifying process of starting over, Craig ultimately discovered that when you have nothing, anything is possible. Today, Craig is an author, speaker, and Reinvention Architect. He specializes in working with people who want to reinvent themselves so they can create the extraordinary lives they've always wanted. He is celebrating the release of his upcoming book, "Blank Canvas - How I Recreated My Life", releasing on May 25th, 2021. In this episode we discuss: 1) The difference between internal and external fulfillment. External fulfillment comes from outside of us and chasing monetary items or status in order to feel that fulfillment. Internal fulfillment comes from inside of ourselves. This was one of the most powerful lessons that Craig learned during his time in federal prison. 2) We always have a choice and learning how to own and exercise our choices is the path to our freedom. We can choose to change our story at any time. 3) Embracing vulnerability is the path to creating freedom. It can also lead us to the most incredible relationships and people who are meant to make a difference or an impact in our lives. S4 Ep 259#259: It's Always in the Being, Not the Doing with Renee Dineen

#259: It's Always in the Being, Not the Doing with Renee Dineen Today we are speaking with TedX & Keynote Speaker, Best Selling Author, Organizational Psychologist, Leadership & Team Performance Coach Renée Dineen. Renee is a recovering workaholic and "doing" addict who left her executive-level leadership role in biotech to give herself a genuine shot at doing work that mattered most to her heart without sacrificing the rest of her life. What drives her today is the opportunity to reduce human and organizational suffering and equip people from all walks of life, to live with more purpose, joy and grace. As an international thought leader playing at the intersection of business, psychology and well-being, Renée travels around the world coaching and advising leaders and teams how to best navigate risks, challenges and opportunities while fueling the soul of the organizations and cultures they shape. In 2020, Renée took her own story to TedX stage. Her talk titled 'Authentic Inaction™: Undoing the Doing in a Do Crazy World' is an account of her own trials and tribulations as a doing addict. Her talk has already reached over 500K views and supports her mission to revolutionize the way we work, play & relate to one another and our purpose. In this episode we discuss: 1) Authentic inaction - the crippling dependency on 'doing' is triggering burn-out, damaging relationships, and is resulting in a loss of our sense of self. 2) How being busy is honored, encouraged, and expected, so much so that what we do has become the definition of who we are. We put ourselves on a perpetual cycle of burnout until we learn to honour the inaction as being an important part of the process. S4 Ep 258#258: Are You Keeping Shame Alive?

#258: Are You Keeping Shame Alive? In this "Monday mindset'' episode, I am sharing my thoughts on shame, what it is doing to us and how we can literally change the story. Shame according to Brene Brown is, "an intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging." Shame is one of the most powerful emotions that profoundly shapes, controls and dictates the way we interact with the world. In today's episode we discuss:1) We all have shame stories. These are the stories of struggle, the stories we feel mean that we failed or the stories we hope that no one ever actually finds out about us. They have a tremendous hold on us and we continue to feed the story and keep it alive by hiding behind it. The armour we carry represents the shame we feel and feed in our lives. 2) We give shame its power and its hold on us when we don't talk about the difficult things in life. We are feeding it, fueling it and literally giving it all of our power. We are the only ones who can change the story. 3) The only way to change the control shame has is to give it a voice. When we give our story a voice, shame cannot survive. What we don't need in the midst of struggle is shame for being human. You are imperfect, you are wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging. Brene Brown. This co-dependent relationship we have with shame is what is keeping the shame alive and blocking us from the connections, relationships, joy and fulfillment that we are searching for. 4) "Courage gives us a voice and compassion gives us an ear. Without both, there is no opportunity for empathy and connection." "If we can share our story with someone who responds with empathy and understanding, shame can't survive." S4 Ep 257#257: Stop Waiting for Permission

#257: Stop Waiting for Permission In this "Friday Facts'' episode, I am sharing my thoughts on permission and how we get stuck waiting for permission to act in our lives. There is no one who can give you permission to create change, as it truly only comes from inside of us. We can't ask and wait for permission to show up as ourselves. Whether it is about creating a small shift, a massive change in our lives, leaving something that isn't working for us or choosing something different, we are the only one who can step up and decide what step to take next. In today's episode we discuss:1) We tend to wait for permission because we don't want to disappoint others, yet we end up disappointing ourselves or living in resentment or blame when we don't take responsibility for our own choices. 2) This action alone gives others the power in our lives and this can keep us in a space of resentment or frustration as well. It is these actions that make us feel like we don't have any power in our lives. 3) This tends to come from years of people pleasing and working hard to live up to the expectations of others. If you were not encouraged to fail or told that you don't have to please everyone, this could be an easy trap to fall into. If you live this way it can be very hard to learn to listen and honour what your body needs because you are judging yourself or you feel like the act of "resting" is not "enough". 4) What is the one thing you haven't been acting on that you know deep down you want to give yourself permission to do. If there is anything this last year has taught us it's that we can't wait any longer. Don't make waiting an option to follow through with what you are wanting to do, create or be in your life. S4 Ep 254#254: Your Mission Doesn't Wait for You

#254: Your Mission Doesn't Wait for You In this Friday Facts episode, I am sharing my thoughts on our life mission and how it doesn't wait for you. This one might hit home for you. There is this continuous loop of clients and people in general waiting for things to line up perfectly before they get started. Waiting for the timing to be right, to be ready, and to have it all set up perfectly to avoid failing. This is not the way it works. We are meant to get started and learn as we go and to let it unfold as it is meant to. We are actually the ones who will open up the doors of opportunity, by getting into action. Don't make your mission wait for you, because it won't. In today's episode we discuss:1) Every single person has a mission or a purpose that they are here to fulfill. Everyone has a purpose. Don't get so wrapped up in finding your purpose or understanding the meaning of it, because while you are waiting, you are not allowing it to come to life. 2) Waiting is wasting time, energy and resources. We aren't meant to start with a plan all laid out because even if we did, that is not how it unfolds. Life doesn't go according to plan, that is the normal. Life unfolds in the most surprising ways when we get into action and let it unfold. 3) Your mission is a phone call on your heart that screams louder than anything else. It is already speaking to you. If you listen, you can hear it. It doesn't wait for you to figure it all out.4) Your mission will continue to evolve and you become a living embodiment of it as you continue to show up for it. S4 Ep 252#252: Why Storytelling?

#252: Why Storytelling? In this "Monday mindset'' episode, I am sharing my thoughts on storytelling and why I am now calling myself a Storytelling and Business Coach. Storytelling encompasses everything I embrace about our stories, how they shape us into who we are, how they teach us lessons that we are meant to share with others, and how powerful our stories are. Our stories can help us to support, impact and make a difference in the lives of others. In today's episode we discuss:1) Storytelling is so important because it is how we see and recognize each other, through our pain, experience and emotions. It is also how we realize that we are more alike than different, and it is how we connect with others, and build relationships as well as learning how to share our stories through vulnerability is the birthplace of joy, fulfillment, belonging, authenticity and relationships. It is how we find our people. 2) Storytelling is learning how to objectively look at your stories, your life experiences, and then pull the lessons out of your story to understand how it shaped you to be who you are now. It is also looking at the stories and understanding that you wouldn't be the person you are today without those stories. Through this process you learn how to stand ON your story instead of IN it. This is where you see the impact of your story in helping others, and serving a much bigger purpose. 3) We go through this process, by revisiting and breaking down our life stories, then looking for the repeated patterns or stories, and then looking at the 4 - 5 lessons or themes that you have lived through. These are the key things in your wheelhouse that make you who you are, the expert of your life and the main areas that you could stand up and speak without any notes. It is also important to learn how to build yourself to share your story. 4) What if diving into your story helps you to see your story and your circumstances differently, and what if this is the path to actually turning your pain into your purpose to help you to create the impact that only you are here to make?
