The left-hander was recently released by the Chicago White Sox after having a 2-5 record with a 7.88 ERA through eight starts. He was in the final season of a $55 million, three-year deal. The 34-year-old Keuchel won the AL Cy Young Award with the Houston Astros in 2015 and is also a two-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner. General manager Don Sweeney says the search for a replacement will begin immediately. Boston made the playoffs in each of Cassidy’s six seasons behind the bench. He coached the Bruins within one victory of the Stanley Cup in 2019. Cassidy immediately becomes a top candidate for vacancies in Philadelphia, Chicago, Winnipeg, Vegas and Detroit and any others that may now come open. The Bruins are expected to be without first-line left winger Brad Marchand and top defenseman Charlie McAvoy for at least the first two months of next season. NHL – Jets’ Kyle Connor wins Lady Byng for gentlemanly conduct Winnipeg Jets forward Kyle Connor has won the Lady Byng Trophy, given to the NHL’s most gentlemanly player. Connor tied for the second-fewest number of minor penalties during the regular season. He was penalized just twice in over 1,700 minutes of ice time that included regular short-handed shifts and matchups against top offensive opponents. It’s his first Lady Byng honor. The left-hander was recently released by the Chicago White Sox after having a 2-5 record with a 7.88 ERA through eight starts. He was in the final season of a $55 million, three-year deal. The 34-year-old Keuchel won the AL Cy Young Award with the Houston Astros in 2015 and is also a two-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner. It extended the Blue Jays’ streak to six games., Kevin Gausman pitched five innings to win his second straight start. Kirk hit both home runs off of White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito, who got the loss. Giolito allowed season-highs of six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Toronto is 15-7 in one-run games, the best such record in the majors. Cubs 8, Brewers 7 – Wisdom homers in 8th inning, Cubs beat Brewers 8-7 Patrick Wisdom hit a tie-breaking solo home run in the eighth inning, Willson Contreras and P.J. Higgins also went deep, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-7. Wisdom’s 11th home run came on a 3-2 pitch from Brad Boxberger, who got the loss. Contreras now has eight homers to lead all MLB catchers. Christopher Morel continued a hot start to his career with a walk and a triple, setting a club record by reaching base in his first 14 major-league games. Compher scored twice, Cale Makar had a goal and two assists and the Colorado Avalanche held off the Edmonton Oilers 8-6 in Game 1 of the Western Conference final. The Avalanche’s eight goals were tied for the most in a playoff game in franchise history. Both teams needed to use backup goaltenders. Edmonton’s Mike Smith was pulled after giving up six goals and Darcy Kuemper left with an upper-body injury. Twelve Avs recorded at least a point and six had multi-point games. Tonight Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers, 8:00 p.m. (Game 1) WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Last Night Washington Mystics 87, Indiana Fever 75 Chicago Sky 73, Phoenix Mercury 70 Mystics 87, Fever 75 – Atkins scores 28, Mystics beat Fever 87-75 Ariel Atkins scored a season-high 28 points, Elena Delle Donne scored 13 of her 19 points in the first half and the Washington Mystics beat the Indiana Fever 87-75. Elizabeth Williams led Washington’s defensive effort with 15 rebounds and six blocks, while also scoring 10 points for her first double-double with the Mystics. Natasha Cloud also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists. Washington trailed 46-38 at halftime before outscoring Indiana 49-29 in the second half. The Mystics finished with a 44-32 advantage on the glass. Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Sky 73, Mercury 70 – Vandersloot leads Sky past Mercury in WNBA Finals rematch Courtney Vandersloot had 18 points and six assists, Candace Parker grabbed 11 rebounds and the Chicago Sky beat the short-handed Phoenix Mercury 73-70 in a WNBA Finals rematch. Phoenix star Diana Taurasi was ejected with 3:43 left in the second quarter for arguing a no-call with an official. Golf – Champions – Alker shoots 63 and rallies to win Senior PGA for 1st major Steven Alker is on a roll and now has his first senior major. Alker rallied from four shots behind with a 63 to win the Senior PGA Championship. That’s his third victory this year on the PGA Tour Champions and his first major. The 50-year-old from New Zealand was part of a three-way tie involving Stephen Ames and Bernhard Langer. They all made bogeys at some point on the back nine. Alker made a pair of key birdies that allowed him to take control. The win gets Alker into his first PGA Championship next year at Oak Hill. Detroit recalled the infielder/outfielder from Triple-A Toledo of the International League and put outfielder Robbie Grossman on the 10-day injured list because of a strained neck. A third round pick in the 2018 amateur draft, Clemens was hitting .283 at Toledo with eight homers and 31 RBIs in 45 games. Drafted as a second baseman, he has played first, second, third and left this season. Detroit needed depth because of Grossman’s injury and Miguel Cabrera’s bad back. MLB – Sox waive Keuchel, put Cease, Graveman on restricted list The Chicago White Sox put right-handers Dylan Cease and Kendall Graveman on the restricted list ahead of a three-game series at the Toronto Blue Jays that begins Tuesday night. To enter Canada, the Canadian government requires a person must have received a second vaccine dose or one dose of Johnson & Johnson at least 14 days prior to entry. MLB – Cubs place Seiya Suzuki on 10-day IL, cut Robert Gsellman The Chicago Cubs placed rookie outfielder Seiya Suzuki on the 10-day injured list with a left ring finger sprain prior. Suzuki was injured in Thursday’s game against the Reds in Cincinnati when he he stole second in the third inning and jammed his hand on the bag. He left the contest and has not played since. Suzuki is batting .245 with four homers and 21 RBIs in 41 games. The roster move was retroactive to Friday. The Cubs also designated right-hander Robert Gsellman for assignment and selected the contract of left-hander Brandon Hughes from Triple-A Iowa. The 50-year-old New Zealander, who already has won twice and leads the PGA Tour Champions money list with almost $1.2 million, started his round with a 25-foot downhill eagle putt on the 539-yard, par-5 10th hole after a 240-yard approach with a 5-wood. He then finished his afternoon round with his sixth birdie of the day to shoot a 7-under 64, which was tied late in the day by 56-year-old Bob Estes. Stricker revealed his positive test Tuesday on Twitter. He says he was “super bummed” and that it was “just a small setback.” Stricker was out of competition for six months because of a virus that he says doctors never fully identified. He became ill last fall about a month after leading the Americans to a record blowout over Europe at Whistling Straits. The Broward County Medical Examiner said in its report released Monday that Haskins’ blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal level for driving when he was struck April 9. The 24-year-old former Ohio State star had run out of gas on Interstate 595 near Fort Lauderdale about dawn. He told a companion he was going to find a gas station. The dump truck driver told investigators Haskins stepped in front of him as he traveled in the center lane.
