337 episodes — Page 5 of 7

S4 Ep 135135. Pretty Woman with special guest Chris Rosson
E"Well color me happy! There's a sofa in here for two!" We watched Pretty Woman (1990) with our friend Chris Rosson and we want the fairy tale. Julia Roberts and Laura San Giacomo are friendship goals. OK so they're both sex workers and Kit De Luca (San Giacomo) may or may not be a junkie with zero to no money management skills. But they got each other. And Vivian Ward (Roberts) is the original "hooker with a heart of gold." Richard Gere plays Edward Lewis a little tightly wound but hey it was the 90's and he had some sort of vague high pressure job. It's still hard to believe that Disney had their fingerprints anywhere near this movie, but the script is charming and director Garry Marshall turned what could have been a dark cautionary tale into one of the most memorable rom-coms of the 90s. "Welcome to Hollywood. What's your dream?" S4 Ep 134134. Romeo + Juliet with special guest Espie Quintero
ETwo houses, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona, where we lay our scene. We watched William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996) with our friend Espie Quintero and "A Plague on both your houses!" Aesthetically gifted Australian director Baz Luhrmann gifted unto the 1990's this perfect chocolate box of a movie for "The MTV generation." We were just learning about this wunderkind actor Leonardo DiCaprio when this movie exploded into theaters (and our loins) and the rest is history. Romeo and Juliet was standard reading in high school and 90's teens rejoiced when we found out it was getting "updated" with the dreamboat from "The Basketball Diaries" and Angela Chase herself - Claire Danes from "My So-Called Life!" Our little queer hearts (and our loins) burst. The cast absolutely crushes it, the soundtrack is killer and the costumes still make us swoon. This movie is nearly untouched by time and we are so stoked to be talking about it. S4 Ep 133133. Scream 2 with special guest Andy Ur
E"That is so Moral Majority." We watched Scream 2 with our friend Andy Ur and Season 4 of Movies That Made Us Gay is here! It's still Scream Season and we're giving you a FULL episode of the second entry in this hallowed franchise. Sidney (Neve Campbell) and Randy (Jamie Kennedy) are now in college with a fresh crop of victims for a copycat killer(s?) to pick off one by one. Leaning WAY into the sequel-ness of it all - the body count is indeed bigger and the death scenes are in fact more elaborate (poor SMG). The "Stab" film within a film starring Heather Graham, Tori Spelling and Luke Wilson is *chef's kiss* and the now standard opening kill with Jada Pikett Smith and Omar Epps is still terrifying. Oh, and Randy's Film Theory discussion of sequels lives rent free in our brains. "There's no accounting for taste." S3 Ep 132132. Carol with special guest Jackson Cooper
E"Just when you think it can't get any worse, you run out of cigarettes." We watched Carol (2015) with MTMUG Superstar Jackson Cooper and we'll take the train set! Cate Blanchett is giving us EVERYTHING as Carol the bored housewife/secret lesbian in 1950's New York. Rooney Mara's Therese is giving us wide-eyed innocence, even though she really knows exactly what she's doing. The costumes, the hair, the setting all reeled us in (we're once again "transported) but the melodrama, the old timey dialogue and the New England WASPy character names are just the icing on the cake. Let's also give it up for Grand High Lesbian Sarah Paulson as the best friend/ex lover she was born to play and Jake Lacey once again playing America's problematic boyfriend. S3 Ep 131131. Hook wth special guest Joshua Clement
"So, Peter, you've become a pirate." We watched Hook (1991) with MTMUG Superstar Joshua Clement and we've lost our marbles. Steve Spielberg's 1991 continuation of Peter Pan gave us iconic performances and a couple of arguably draggy character pieces. Dame Maggie Smith in Granny Wendy Drag and Dustin Hoffman in Captain Hook High Drag are at the top of the list but Robin Williams and Dante Basco are giving them a run for the money. Robin's 30-something Peter Banning (Pan) goes from executive realness to cosplay queen while Dante as Rufio is serving Mother of the House of Lost Boys in full Road Warrior couture, complete with red Capezio dance shoes. Don't worry - we get to the one and only Julia Roberts giving us ginger Tinkerbell realness. Say it and mean it... "I believe in fairies!" S3 Ep 130130. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas with special guest Ben Cheaves
E"It's always a business doing pleasure with you!" We watched The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) with our friend Ben Cheaves and we need to pick up one of them Japanese sling shots. Dolly Parton and Mr. Burt Reynolds boot scoot and boogie their way across the screen in this country fried musical from the director of "9 to 5", Colin Higgins. Burt's sheriff drag and Dolly's saloon madame couture are pretty queer but you are not truly gay until you have seen a room full of 1980's male ballet dancers having a hoedown in a football locker room in nothing but jock straps and cowboy boots. The ladies of The Chicken Ranch are equally fabulous sporting looks as varied as classic country lady of the evening, disco diva and Pat Benatar realness. Truly a sight to behold. Move over "The Bodyguard" because this movie closes out with I Will Always Love You as sung by the original Dolly Parton herself. "It was the nicest little whorehouse you ever saw!" S3 Ep 129129. The Rules of Attraction with special guest Mike Toscano
E"No one ever knows anyone. You're not ever gonna know me." We watched The Rules of Attraction (2002) with MTMUG Superstar Mike Toscano and we always knew it would be like this. We're taking another trip into Bret Easton Ellis territory with this slick entry from director Roger Avery. The cast is filled to the brim with beautiful up and comers and even one or two teen soap stars trying to break the mold. Released during the Golden Age of the Special Edition DVD - we talk about all FIVE commentary tracks and even the infamous deleted scene that was left off the DVD featuring Casper Van Dien taking on the role of American Psycho's Patrick Bateman (apparently Christian Bale was busy). Our teenage gay selves showed up for the college boys dancing in their underwear but our adult gay selves keep coming back for Swoosie Kurtz and Faye Dunaway popping pills over martinis. Rock and Roll. S3 Ep 128128. But I'm A Cheerleader with special guest Zoë Secrest
E"Foreplay is for sissies! Real men go in, unload, and pull out!" We watched "But I'm a Cheerleader" with our friend Zoë Secrest, and like its heroine Megan (Natasha Lyonne) we might or might not have been eating tofu and had a giant Melissa Etheridge poster in our bedrooms growing up. A staple of queer cinema of the early 00s, we love this razor sharp and hilarious satire by writer/director Jamie Babbit Join us as we follow Megan as she falls down the rabbit hole of gay conversion camp at 'New Directions' lead by Cathy Moriarty and RuPaul Charles. We want to be best friends with lesbian icon Clea Duvall, and can agree that Moriarty screaming sexual positions over a megaphone is a mood. S3 Ep 127127. The Ice Storm with special guest Stanley Jacobus
E"Libbets? What sort of a name is Libbets?" We watched The Ice Storm (1997) with our friend Stanley Jacobus and I think it's time to refill our waterbeds. This family drama is full of killer performances - Joan Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Christina Ricci own this movie. The 1970's art direction and costume design truly transports us every time we watch. Sigourney Weaver's bountiful hair and gorgeous makeup is enough to keep us revisiting, but her icy (pun intended) performance is the real star here. We all agree Christina Ricci's little red riding hood knit poncho is wardrobe goals but at the end of the day we want to be Sigourney when we grow up. S3 Ep 126126. Purple Rain (1984) with special guest Christian Turner
EDearly beloved... we watched Purple Rain (1984) with our friend Christian Turner and we need to purify ourselves in the waters or Lake Minnetonka. There never has been and never will be another like Prince Rogers Nelson and there is no other movie like Purple Rain. This movie is so bananas it has to be seen to be believed. Prince and The Revolution, Morris Day and The Time and Apollonia all play fictionalized versions of themselves in a fantasyland Minneapolis where nightclub acts reign supreme, leather and lace are worn freely (during the day) and people make their way TO Minnesota to make it in the biz. You may finish the movie with more questions than answers but watching nearly the entire Purple Rain album performed in a packed club full of 1984 Central Casting extras makes it all worth while. S3 Ep 125125. Legend (1985) Directed by Ridley Scott
E"What is light without dark?" We watched Legend (1985) directed by Ridley Scott and what we wouldn't give to run around the forest hugging woodland creatures and get wine drunk with fairies. This movie is HIGH fantasy and we are here for it. Baby Tom Cruise is prancing around without any pants, Mia Sara is serving high-fashion face, face, beauty, face and Tim Curry is giving us CAMP as gym-bunny muscle-queen Lord of Darkness. This movie is peak 80's fantasy up there with any Henson or Lucasfilm classic and definitely not to be missed. S3 Ep 124124. Madonna: Truth or Dare with special guest Marlene Stang
E"Why would you say something if it's off-camera? What point is there existing?" We watched Madonna: Truth or Dare with our friend Marlene Stang and anybody who says our show is "neat" has got to go. Part documentary, part concert film, part reality show, this revolutionary movie knocked our socks off and sparked a sexual awakening in an entire generation. The biggest pop star on Earth was incorporating dance moves from black gay clubs, using ethnically diverse flamboyantly homosexual dancers and beaming it into YOUR living room whether you liked it or not. Madonna famously says it is her job to push peoples buttons and push she did. Truth or Dare showcased gay people in such a matter of fact way you couldn't help but fall in love with these queens in her cavalcade of show biz shenanigans. S3 Ep 123123. Rosemary's Baby with special guest Muffy Bolding
E"Witches... All of them witches!" We watched Rosemary's Baby (1968) with our friend the very funny Muffy Bolding and this is no dream - this is really happening! We're not saying we'd make a deal with the devil but a Pre-War 3 bedroom in The Bramford on Central Park West is nothing to scoff at. We always pictured ourselves as Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow); a wisp of a girl with the mod haircut and babydoll wardrobe. Then reality sets in and we realize we're more like Minnie Castevet, played by the incomparable Ruth Gordon, the busybody neighbor with no filter and zero F*cks given. Have we signed away our undying souls to Satan? No... but again - have you seen that apartment? S3 Ep 122122. Friday the 13th Part 2 with special guests Jackson Cooper and Pickens Barringer
E"These kids smoke better dope than I do." We watched Friday the 13th Part 2 with our friends Jackson Cooper and Pickens Barringer and the body count continues! Clocking in at a brisk 87 minutes (shorter than the length of this episode!) this quickie sequel cranks up the scares, the gore and the casual nudity - not to mention the wall-to-wall cute boys. Pretty-boy Scott (Russel Todd), sensitive Mark (Tom McBride), oversexed Jeff (Bill Randolph), even prankster Ted (Stuart Charno) can all hit it six ways to Sunday. Even square head-counselor Paul (John Furey) is serving up major 80's hottie vibes. At the end of the day, final-girl Ginny played by Amy Steel is the real MVP of this one. Donning full Mrs. Voorhees drag, she goops and gags Jason to take the crown and make it out of Camp Crystal Lake alive... barely. S3 Ep 121121. Misery (1990) Directed by Rob Reiner
E"I'm gonna get my Liberace records!" We watched Misery (1990) and we still feel all oogie. From master horror author Stephen King, Misery give us absolute lunatic Annie Wilkes brought to us in an Academy Award winning performance by Kathy Bates. The ultimate super-fan, Wilkes takes obsession to new heights when she holds romance novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) hostage after a near fatal car accident. This movie is so well acted we even buy Sonny Corleone as a romance novelist! Do we all have a little Annie Wilkes in us? Hopefully not too much. But I'll be damned if I'm watching a movie with a less than cohesive plot and I want to just scream... HE DIDN'T GET OUT OF THE COCK - A - DOODIE CAR! S3 Ep 120120. Sleepy Hollow with special guest Billy Roach
EHow's your head? We watched Sleepy Hollow (1999) with our friend and MTMUG Superstar Billy Roach and tonight the horseman comes for you! This movie is peak Tim Burton - we're talking dramatic American-Gothic scenery, Johnny Depp putting on a silly voice, and Lisa Marie scaring the ever loving heck out of us. Not to mention Miranda Richardson in a drag-worthy dual role and Christina Ricci looking like a living Margaret Keen painting. It's funny, scary, definitely campy and at times a straight up gore-fest. Do yourself a favor and revisit Sleepy Hollow. And don't forget… watch your head. S3 Ep 119119. Donnie Darko with special guest Michael Morgan
E"Donnie Darko. What the hell kind of name is that? It's like some sort of superhero or something." We watched Donnie Darko with MTMUG Superstar Michael Morgan and we have serious doubts about your commitment to Sparkle Motion! It's our first Jake Gyllenhaal review and this movie does not disappoint. Remember when the gays would constantly claim Jake as one of our own? We just couldn't resist that doe-eyed stare. Donnie Darko really put Jake on the mainstream radar. First of all can we talk about this cast? Drew Barrymore's Flower Films production company went to bat to get this movie made and and Drew herself plays Donnie's too-cool English teacher. America's hipster girlfriend and Jakes real-life sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, absolute icon Patrick Swayze and the Legendary Beth Grant, to name a few, round out this stellar ensemble. Is there really an answer to what this movie is actually about? Maybe not - but we try to get to the bottom of it. We'll leave you with this... Cellar Door. S3 Ep 118118. Sleeping Beauty with special guest Devin Lotfi
E"You're living in the past, this is the 14th century." We watched Sleeping Beauty (1959) with our friend Devin Lotfi (I Don't Want To Hear That! Podcast) and we could use some beauty sleep. The last of the Disney Classic fairy tales - until The Little Mermaid was released 30 years later. Nothing comes close to Eleanor Audley's ICONIC performance as Maleficent. We all can agree the Mistress of Evil has got some style! I mean who hasn't let their petty side come out after realizing you weren't invited to the party? Princess Aurora is serving some 1950's Barbie proportions and Prince Phillip is BAE! I mean he fought off all the powers of HELL!! S3 Ep 117117. The Little Mermaid with special guest Allison Levitan
ECome on you poor unfortunate soul! We watched The Little Mermaid (1989) with our friend Allison Levitan and we want to be part of your world! If you didn't swim like a mermaid in the swimming pool after watching this movie are you even gay? This movie not only started the Disney animation renaissance, but it launched a thousand gay boys life-long mermaid fascination. Throw in the DREAMY Prince Eric and the Drag Queen Ursula and you have one heck of a homosexual experience. Do you remember where you were when you first realized the Disney animators actually and truly used Divine as visual inspiration for one of the best Disney villains (fight me)? Now SING! S3 Ep 116116. Buffy The Vampire Slayer with special guest Jacob Carrillo
E"You ruined my new jacket! Kill him A LOT!" We watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) with our friend Jacob Carrillo and we still just want to marry Christian Slater and die. Back before Sarah Michelle Gellar and the "Scooby gang" were galavanting around Sunnydale trying to close the Hellmouth, there was the Buffy movie with Kristy Swanson and the oh-so-dreamy Luke Perry. Serving as a jumping-off point for the TV series, the movie itself is super charming with its uber 90's cast, wardrobe and overall aesthetic. Luke Perry in a Caesar cut and soul patch? Swoon! We can't help but draw parallels to the TV series, but we try to keep the conversation aimed towards the movie. I mean they're just SO different - movie Buffy is ash blonde, TV Buffy is honey blonde! S3 Ep 115115. Fight Club with special guest Drew Stanley
E"I want brain parasites." We watched Fight Club (1999) with our friend Drew Stanley and we want you to hit us as hard as you can. It's our TENTH movie from 1999 which just proves it really was the best movie year ever. Not to worry - we don't go too hard on the forensic analysis of this often misunderstood movie. We do however touch on themes of toxic masculinity, hyper violence and the acid-goth-rave wardrobe of Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter. Director David Fincher's ahead of their time visuals were immediately ripped off, firmly placing the visual style of the movie into pop culture history. Ok we get it - how could a movie about a group of shirtless men meeting in a dark basement to pound the living hell out each other possibly have gay undertones? Oh wait. S3 Ep 114114. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace with special guest Nikolas Romero
E"The biggest problem in the universe is that nobody helps each other." We watched Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace with Star Wars superfan Nikolas Romero and we have a bad feeling about this. It's a tale as old as time… taxation of trade routes, arguments on the senate floor, you know - kid stuff. The script may have it's problems but we have a special place in our hearts for this endearing, while flawed, scifi classic. Maybe the political intrigue goes on a bit too long but this movie did bestow onto the world Natalie Portman's Queen Amidala and her killer wardrobe, super-dreamy Ewan McGregor as young Obi-Wan Kenobi and Liam Neeson serving in that lace-front as grizzled Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Do we have an extensive Star Wars memorabilia collection? Yes. Is part of that collection numerous Queen Amidala Fashion dolls? Absolutely. Do we agree on who exactly is the Phantom Menace? Not at all. S3 Ep 113113. Thelma & Louise with special guest Joshua Clement
E"Well, darlin', look out, cause my hair is comin' down!" We watched Thelma & Louise (1991) with our friend and special Oscars correspondent Joshua Clement and we'd risk it all for a night with early 90's Brad Pitt any day. We really get into the lore behind the making of this quintessentially American movie. From on-set spontaneous country line-dancing, to the long road to casting Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. Ultimately it had to be those two - but could you see Meryl and Goldie hitting the road and raising hell? Susan and Geena went on to receive dual Academy Award nominations for Best Actress but it was another Southern spitfire who took the gold that year… but that conversation is for another episode (perhaps over some fava beans). Oscar wins or no, Thelma & Louise will be remembered for stunning lead performances, a controversial ending and bestowing Brad Pitt's 8 pack abs unto humanity. S3 Ep 112112. View From the Top with special guest Brad Liberti
EDo you dot your "I"'s with little hearts? Thats so cute. We watched View From the Top (2003) with our friend Brad Liberti and we're ready to fly the friendly skies. This light hearted comedy about a brassy gal who makes her way out of a tacky commuter airline and into the big leagues had a few stumbles on its way to First Class, International. It's Christmas 2001 release was put on hold after 9/11 and its subsequent re-writes and edits hurt the overall tone. It wants to be wackier than it is and other times the wackiness is out of place (Mike Myers' wandering eye!). And let's not forget - no one screams small-town trailer park gal more than Gwyneth Paltrow. The cast is really giving it their all and overall the movie is charming. But we're still trying to imagine the world in which a former flight attendant can become so famous as to become a mogul on the level of Oprah or Martha Stewart. S3 Ep 111111. Robin Hood with special guest Matt Baume
E"He's so handsome, just like his rewards posters." We watched Robin Hood with the insightful Matt Baume (Matt Baume's Culture Cruise) and oo-de-lally that sly fox had us feeling some type of way. For a family animated film this movie had gay culture down to a science; a thin and boyishly handsome scamp spends his days with his large bear companion dabbling in cross dressing and social justice. The effeminate Prince John and his lisping consort Sir Hiss are the template for the queer coded Disney villain trope (oh we get into it). And let's face it - the busty Lady Cluck is a drag queen. This one was a lot of fun to break down, but we came to a consensus; If having a crush on an anthropomorphic fox is wrong - we don't wanna be right. S3 Ep 110110. My Best Friend's Wedding with special guest Blake Knight
EShe's got exactly four days to break up a wedding and steal the brides fella. We watched My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) with our friend Blake Knight and we suddenly have the urge to spontaneously break out into song. Hot off the heals of a gothic retread of "Frankenstein from the maid's point of view" and that musical Woody Allen movie, America's sweetheart Julia Roberts needed a hit - and boy did this movie deliver. On paper Julia is clearly the villain but she's just so stinkin' cute we give her a pass. Dermot Mulroney is adorable as the titular best friend and our girl Cammie Diaz just steals our hearts as the flighty fiancé we know we should root against, but we can't help but fall in love with. Rupert Everett rounds out the cast as the GBF (long before the term was ever coined). The first in a string of late 90's hits for Julia. If you haven't seen it yet - check out this charming rom-com. S3 Ep 109109. Jumpin' Jack Flash with special guest Ben Cheaves
EI'm a little black woman, in a big silver box! We watched Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986) with our friend Ben Cheaves and we still can't understand a thing Mick Jagger is singing. Whoopi Goldberg as Terry Doolittle is iconic. Her apartment, her workspace and her wardrobe are all #GOALS. Suffice it to say - we still want to be Terry when we grow up. She hates her boss, she's quick with a comeback and she can hold her own against KGB goons - she's just like us! Now we just need to perfect our Diana Ross lip sync for our lives. The Cold War era espionage and pre-AIM instant messaging may date the movie but we don't care! After all the cloak and dagger shenanigans is Jonathan Pryce a bit of a boobie prize? Was young Jon Lovitz sort of a cutie? Did Terry get a reward for extraditing a government agent? Find out in this weeks episode of Movies That Made Us Gay! S3 Ep 108108. Can't Stop the Music with special guest Jackson Cooper
EIt's like Spice World for the Village People. We watched Can't Stop the Music (1980) with our friend Jackson Cooper and we want to stay at the YMCA! Producer Allan Carr was at the top of his game after the success of Grease (1978) and the next story bursting forth was the pseudo-biography of disco's greatest novelty act - the Village People. This movie takes place in a theme park version of Manhattan where go-go boys roam the streets in a full Native American headdress, a man can roller skate down 5th avenue without being actively murdered and a leatherman can belt out "Danny Boy" standing on a piano and not be the weirdest thing in the room. The filmmakers missed the mark when they predicted disco to be the sound the 80's would be remembered for, but they wisely called multi-million dollar marketing campaigns backed by big-milk. S3 Ep 107107. Psycho (1998) Directed by Gus Van Sant
EA boy's best friend is his mother. We watched Psycho (1998) directed by Gus Van Sant no we won't apologize. Hot on the heels of the success of Good Will Hunting, Gus Van Sant was given a blank check by Hollywood and he took a gamble on a shot for shot remake of the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho. Ravaged by critics and fellow filmmakers, this version of Psycho has a long and sordid history - and we are here to tell you... its not THAT bad! In fact we enjoy the dang thing. Anne Heche is giving us a dizzy Marion Crane who makes one wrong decision after another. Viggo Mortnesen is serving himbo-daddy realness. Julianne Moore creates a character FAR beyond what was presented on the page and Vince Vaughn delivers a solid Norman Bates. This movie is pretty queer and we are here to tell you - give it a chance! S3 Ep 106106. Matilda with special guest Petey Gibson
EYou chose books - I chose looks. We watched Matilda (1996) with the very funny Petey Gibson and we've loved this movie since we were old enough to xerox. Almost every kid feels like an outsider at some point in their lives - queer kids in particular. Matilda showed us it was ok to be a little different - but we're still holding out for our powers. Maybe director Danny De Vito didnt intend for this movie to have so many queer themes, but we're latching on to them all; chosen family, being surrounded by drag queens who hate children and going to extremes for vintage dolls. We still have anxiety about getting thrown in the chokey and we're unashamed to say we got a little misty at more than a couple scenes. "You can do it Brucey!" Maybe we were just happy to watch someone eat so much cake. S3 Ep 105105. Mean Girls with special guest Tyler Schuelke
EI want to lose three pounds. We watched Mean Girls (2004) with our friend Tyler Schuelke (Ep 40, Saved) and we're not like a regular podcast… we're a cool podcast. We tried our hardest not to sit there and just quote the movie for 90 minutes and we nearly succeeded. The script by Tina Fey from Rosalind Wiseman's "Queen Bees and Wannabes" is damn near perfect and the performances have help up all these years later. This movie has spawned countless memes and pretty much defined a generation. There are a couple of problematic moments (and we're not talking about Regina George's wig) but hey we live and we learn. This movie is so fetch, it's 17 years later and we're still trying to make fetch happen. S3 Ep 104104. I Know What You Did Last Summer with special guest Lex Apro
EWhat are you waiting for HUH?! We watched I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) with our friend Lex Apro and we're taking it to the grave! Suffice it to say we STAN Jennifer Love Hewitt from her days serenading us with her fellow Kids Incorporated to her attempts at pop stardom and her renaissance in hour-long network dramas. But it was her time as a late 90's scream queen that we hold closest to our hearts. Our pal "Love" is joined by some power-house early aughts STARS - Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr and Ryan Phillippe. Let's just say we were obsessed with this entire cast then, and the four of them have aged like fine friggin wine. It's time for a reunion! S3 Ep 103103. What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? With special guest Kelly Hardy
EI didn't bring your breakfast, because you didn't eat your din-din! We watched What Ever Happened to Baby Jane (1962) with our friend Kelly Hardy and we aren't ever gonna leave this house. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are at the top of their game giving us high camp and we're loving every minute of it. Davis and Crawfords capitalize on their feud to create this horror masterpiece that spawned some of the shadiest subgenre names in cinema history. You just know "Psycho-biddy", "Hasploitation", and "Grande Dame Guignol" had to have been coined by a cinefile gay guy! S3 Ep 102102. American Psycho with special guest Mike Toscano
EDo you like Huey Lewis and The News? We watched American Psycho (2000) with MTMUG superstar Mike Toscano and we have to return some videotapes. We try to get decide if the Uber-80's tale of Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) and his descent into madness is a horror movie, a psychological thriller or a dark comedy. Ultimately its up to the viewer. What we can agree on is that gays across the land owe director Mary Harron a debt of gratitude for delivering on those gratuitous body shots of Bale as Bateman working out, tanning and inventing Onlyfans. Was it all in Bateman's head? Maybe. Do we still love author Brett Easton Ellis even though he's a stone cold weirdo? Sure. Do we still pause the movie like giddy middle schoolers at just the right moment. You bet. It's episode 102 of Movies That Made Us Gay! S3 Ep 101101. Grease 2 with special guest Drew Droege
EThere's gotta be more to life than just makin out. We watched Grease 2 with the hilarious Drew Droege and we want more than the boy next door - we want hell on wheels! It's more than just a gender swapped rehash of Grease - it gave the world one miss Michelle Marie Pfeiffer. The amount of gorgeousness when Stephanie Zinoni (Pfeiffer) and Michael Carrington (Maxwell Caulfield) share the screen can power a small town. The new crop of T-Birds fronted by Adrian Zmed are WAY cute and the Pink Ladies are serving Lewks- not the least of which is Lorna Luft giving full drag queen. This movie is full on bananas, with more grown adults playing teens, decidedly un-50's music and the flimsiest secret identity since Clark Kent's horn-rimmed glasses. We still think "Cool Rider" could have been a hit on the radio. S2 Ep 100100. Dirty Dancing with special guest Millie De Chirico
E"I carried a watermelon." We made it to 100 episodes and for this momentous occasion we watched the 80's classic Dirty Dancing (1987) with our friend Millie De Chirico (I Saw What You Did Podcast) and Nobody puts Baby in the corner! This movie can be summed up for the gays and straights alike in two simple words: sexual awakening. Patrick Swayze is strutting around the screen showing off that teeny dancers waist in skintight ballroom slacks while we're all living vicariously through Jennifer Grey as "Baby." We talk about our favorite background dancers showing out, the amazing supporting cast (we Stan Penny!) and the complete and utter disregard for 1960's realism. S2 Ep 9999. The Talented Mr. Ripley with special guest Michael Morgan
EEverybody should have one talent, what's yours? We watched The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) with our friend Mike Morgan and we wouldn't change anything about this moment. Do you remember where you were when you first saw Jude Law in that bathtub? Back in 1999 seeing this kind of flagrant homoerotic imagery in a mainstream movie blew our teenage minds and we've never recovered. Matt Damon in a chartreuse banana hammock, Jude Law in even less and the one-two punch of Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett in 50's couture... our little queer minds never stood a chance. Philip Seymour Hoffman mincing around the joint sealed the deal. Hows the peeping? Tommy how's the peeping? S2 Ep 9898. Superman II with special guest Billy Roach
EKneel before Zod!! We watched Superman II (1980) with our friend and Superman expert Billy Roach and we believe a man can fly. We take a deep dive into Superman lore and really get into what makes these early superhero movies so special. Christopher Reeve is an absolute dreamboat as Superman and Margot Kidder is adorably kooky as Lois Lane. But the Kryptonian villains are everything! Giving you disco S&M glamour. Terence Stamp's General Zod is serving early Priscilla Queen of the Desert bored-queen while Sarah Douglas is FIERCE as glamorous Ursa. We can't leave out Valerie Perrine as Lex Luthor's (Gene Hackman) ditzy moll Miss Teschemacher. Trust us, this movie is gayer than you remember. S2 Ep 9797. Starship Troopers with special guest Matthew Farris
EYou're some sort of big, fat, smart-bug aren't you? We watched Starship Troopers (1997) with out friend Matthew Farris and we suddenly feel the need for a shower. This socio-political satire disguised as a shoot-em-up scifi movie is packed with hidden homo-tendencies... you just have to know where to look. The cast is so beautiful they all look like they were carved out of cream cheese. The combined hotness of Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and Dina Meyer can power a small city for weeks. Not to mention the infamous co-ed shower scene brought to you by director Paul Verhoeven's (Showgirls, Basic Instinct) egalitarian view on the future of warfare. A twink-ish Neil Patrick Harris as a psychic special forces general, shirtless corporal punishment and army barracks grab-ass round out the scenes that have stayed with us since we were baby gays watching this movie with our oblivious families. Maybe we missed out on the not-so-subtle satire then, but we totally watch for the plot now. Would you like to know more? S2 Ep 9696. Cabaret with special guest Darren Elms
EDoesn't my body drive you wild with desire? We watched Cabaret (1972) with our friend Darren Elms and we're here for the divine decadence darling! We take a deep dive and try to find out where Sally Bowles ends and Liza Minnelli begins. Liza belts out these signature songs like such a pro we don't even care that Sally the character is an untalented hack who can't hold a note. Michael York is dreamy as Brian (stand in for Christopher Isherwood) and Joel Grey is creepily perfect as the Master of Ceremonies. Life IS a cabaret old chum so come to the Cabaret. S2 Ep 9595. Serial Mom with special guest Ricky Diaz
EThe only "serial" I know anything about is Rice Krispies! We watched Serial Mom (1994) with our friend Ricky Diaz and you know how we hate the brown word. John Waters takes on the wholesome American family and gives us some of the most quotable lines of his catalog (are those Pussy Willows?). Kathleen Turner plays Beverly Sutphin with such a sweetness you root for her when she takes people out for the most minor offense. Why can't you wear white shoes after Labor Day? Who cares! Keep your eyes peeled for John Waters mainstays like Mink Stole, Traci Lords and Patty Hearst and peep newcomers to his stable of weirdos (Suzanne Somers!). Sometimes our neighbors drive us crazy... we just don't take a leg of lamb to the side of the heads! Yet. S2 Ep 9494. Notes on a Scandal with special guest Paul from That Aged Well Podcast
EYou know it's rude to read a persons diary, it's private! We watched Notes on a Scandal (2006) with our friend Paul from That Aged Well Podcast and sometimes we all feel like bitter old virgins. New art teacher Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) catches the attention of cynical "battle ax" Barbara Covett (Judy Dench). Sheba's affair with a fifteen-year-old student becomes a tool in Barbara's plot to manipulate and possess Sheba and the antics ensue. The "predatory lesbian" tropes aside, this movie is high-camp melodrama worthy of midnight screenings and drag queen lip syncs. The once mousy Sheba taunting Babs with her own diary entries has us cackling every time. "You think this is a love affair?!" The intense score by Phillip Glass and the tight 92 minute runtime only add to the list of reasons to watch this movie today! S2 Ep 9393. Mermaids (1990)
EDon't do anything I wouldn't do... or don't do anything I WOULD! We watched Mermaids (1990) and we're gonna get in our mermaid car and get the mermaid outta here! This movie is filled with a holy trinity of raven haired gay icons. Mrs. Flax (Cher) is the cha-cha mom of our dreams to daughters Charlotte (Winona Ryder) and Kate (Christina Ricci). Catholic envy (while Jewish), lost virginity to the dreamy Michael Schoeffling (Sixteen Candles) and 60's Halloween costumes abound in this sweet coming of age comedy. And don't forget Bob Hoskins giving us cuddly bear hotness. We would pay real money for his portrait of Cher as Cleopatra. S2 Ep 9292. The Fan with special guest Jeff Nelson
EWe needed hearts, not diamonds! We watched The Fan (1981) with the very funny Jeff Nelson and we could use a warm cup of High Point coffee! Lauren Bacall plays a Broadway actress with an obsessive fan played by Michael Biehn who may, or may not be a closet-case (spoiler alert: he totally is). A pre-Terminator (sexy as hell) Biehn spends the movie typing explicit letters to Sally Ross (Bacall) but is rejected at every turn. Maureen Stapleton as Sally's no-nonsense secretary and James Garner as Sally's would-be love interest round out the cast and when the three of them shared the screen I could smell the second hand smoke from their voices alone. The play within the movie is the most homosexual thing I've seen in a long time - and this is the same movie with Michael Biehn jumping into a YMCA pool in his boxer shorts. In New York City. In 1981. You do the math. S2 Ep 9191. Mommie Dearest with special guest Jackson Cooper
EBarbara please! We watched Mommie Dearest (1981) with the very funny Jackson Cooper and we meet "the biggest Mother of them all!" Faye Dunaway's performance as Joan Crawford is high camp, high drama and we can't look away! This movie cemented itself as a gay camp classic the minute Faye turns around and reveals Joans face in the first scene of the movie. Is Joan a villain or just misunderstood? Whatever the case may be she did what needed to be done! If you know someone who hasn't seen this movie - it is your duty as a gay to sit them down and make sure they watch every moment! S2 Ep 9090. Return to Oz with special guest Goldyn Gunville
ENothing can scare the ever living hell out of you like an 80's kids movie. We watched Return to Oz (1985) with our friend Goldyn Gunville and we're scarred for life. Fairuza Balk is Dorothy in this Disney take on Oz and Auntie Em (Piper Laurie) is hauling her off to electro-shock therapy within the first 10 minutes of the movie. The rest of the film is a fever dream of screaming headless witches, wheeled terrors, sass-mouth talking chickens and cross dressing stop-motion rock people. And we are loving every minute of it. They don't make kids movies like this anymore! S2 Ep 8989. The Parent Trap with special guest Rufino Cabang
EWe watched The Parent Trap (1961) with our friend Rufino Cabang and we're seeing double! We're not saying the original classic from the 60's is superior to the remake 90's remake but... ok yes we are. It's better. Haley Mills is delightful as twins separated by their selfish... I mean misguided recently divorced parents. How this cockamamie plan got past family court is a mystery but it makes for an amazing movie. It's got everything; split-screen movie magic, fabulous mid-century modern ranch style homes and a swinging soundtrack featuring Disney mainstay Annette Funicello. Who wouldn't want to spend summers with Miss Inch and go home to foxy Brian Keith? Sign us up! S2 Ep 8888. Party Girl with special guest Bright Light Bright Light
EYour mother was a woman with no common sense! We watched Party Girl (1995) with Bright Light Bright Light and we want a career in library science! Parker Posey is iconic as our hero Mary. A killer wardrobe, a perfect party apartment and connections in mid-90's NYC nightlife - she is our spirit animal. OK, she needs to work on the casual racism, shoplifting and narcissism - but every hero needs an arc. Mary's world is filled with club kids, DJs, drag queens and insanely hot street vendors. The New York City of the 90's is gone, but we'll always Party Girl. Re-Code it! S2 Ep 8787. The Great Muppet Caper with special guest Lex Apro
EMy name is Miss Piggy, and I would like to be a high-fashion model. We watched The Great Muppet Caper (1981) with our friend Lex Apro and modeling is our destiny... we will accept nothing less. The amount of glamour in this movie is off the charts: The flawless Diana Rigg as fashion designer Lady Holiday; Miss Piggy as her put-upon receptionist with dreams of being a mo-dell;The uber-80's super-models/cat-burglars. Miss Piggy's model look-book alone is worth the price of admission. We also get some great dance numbers including a full on Busby Berkeley style synchronized swimming number with Miss Piggy under water!!
