S5 Ep 183183. Flash Gordon with special guest Seán Ferrick

E

"Flash, Flash, I love you, but we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth!" We invited over Trek Culture's Seán Ferrick back on the podcast to watch the camp extraveganza Flash Gordon (1980). Like the renegade cousin strung out on psychedelics to George Lucas's more successful Star Wars Flash, Gordon is one of our favorite cult classics to come out of the early 1980s. Nobody knew how to put on a show like Italian movie mogul Dino De Laurentiis, and Flash Gordon has it all. Playgirl coverboy Sam J. Jones as our sincere beefcake protagonist, the wooden tour de force performance of Melody Anderson as Dale, Max von Sydow chewing the scenery as Emperor Ming the Merciless (culturally insenstive is an understatement here). All political correctness aside, Flash Gordon is still a good time. We talk about Timothy Dalton doing the most with the least amount of character of the bunch, Brian Blessed playing his performance to the back row with his army of harness clad Winged Hawk-Men. Not to mention the rocking score by Queen. This movie went onto be a huge inspiration to Seth McFarland, Taika Waititi, and Edgar Wright for it's insanly fun imagry. S5 Ep 182182. Annie with special guest Brad Liberti

E

Leapin' Lizards! We watched Annie (1982) with our friend Brad Liberti and I think we're gonna like it here! Whether you like it or not, this movie holds a place in our collective consciousness. The story of the little orphan girl who made it out of the slums and into the mansion of a misanthropic oligarch is deeply entrenched in our early movie watching memories. Some of us fantasized about being Annie and going off to live in an estate the size of the Mall of America with a staff peppered with racial stereotypes. Others dreamt of making bathtub gin, while wearing costume jewelry and lingerie. Either way, this movie is iconic. The trio of Carol Burnett, Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters is what gay rights are made of. The opening number of Hard Knock Life featuring orphan girls flipping, stomping and bucking across Miss Hannigan's orphanage give us life (Matilda could never). And I don't care what your orientation is, who didn't fall in love with Ann Reinking as Daddy Warbucks' secretary/love interest Grace? Maybe the movie buried the lead and underplayed "Tomorrow" and maybe the movie differs a little too much from the stage production. This musical might be better in your memory as a child, but it still brings out a smile in the cynic in all of us. Bonus Episode: Oscar 2023 with special guest Harper Thomson

E

The Oscars are Sunday, and we sat down after our Black Swan recording to talk about this year's nominees with friend of the pod Harper Thomson. Does Everything Everywhere All At Once have the major categories in the bag? Is Austin Butler secretly the front runner in the photo finish Best Actor race? Who exactly is going to win supporting actress here? Will Angela Bassett win for an MCU movie? Or will Jamie Lee Curtis or Kerry Condon swoop in after their SAG and BAFTA wins? We talk about all these, plus the below the line categories. Warning on episode: This was recorded in two sittings, so that would be why our some thoughts on categories have changed towards end of the episode.

S5 Ep 181181. Black Swan with Harper from Hawkeyes Podcast

E

"What happened to my sweet girl?" "She's gone!" We watched Black Swan (2010) with our friend Harper, cohost of Hawkeyes Podcast and you'll have to excuse us, we have a lipstick mirror message to wipe off. We're closing out our mini Oscar series with the one that gave Natalie Portman her Best Actress win. Sure she's on the verge of tears the entire movie but you can't deny Natatlie and costar Mila Kunis put in the work to make this movie happen. Director Darren Aronofsky got some stellar performances from the two of them playing differnt sides of the same coin in an edgy, moody, tense package. Don't worry, we talk about the kerfuffle over Natalie's dance double and her getting adequate credit, give our dubious plot description of the ballet Swan Lake and we break down the eternal question; is Natalie Portman actually a good actress? Regardless of our thoughts on that last one, she's got a little gold statue on her mantle that speaks for itself. Grab your legwarmers, scuff up your brand new toe shoes and get ready to eat no food while we talk everything Black Swan! S5 Ep 180180. The Devil Wears Prada with special guest Paul from That Aged Well

E

"By all means move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me." We watched The Devil Wears Prada (2006) with our friend Paul from That Aged Well podcast and we need 10 or 15 skirts from Calvin Klein. Rigt NOW. We're not here to weigh the likeability of one miss Anne Hathaway. (We're her for her. Deal with it.) We are here to discuss Miranda Priestly as she is expertly inhabited by the incomparable Meryl Streep. Miranda may be the boss from hell but let's be real, we would all throw our grandma down the stairs for the opportunity to work for her. The fact that she would read us to filth on a daily basis is just a bonus. The movie may be giving us mixed messages about how it wants us to feel about Andy (Hathaway) and the choices she makes during her time at Runway magazine but we can all agree on one thing... her boyfriend and rotted friend group are the real villains. Let's be real here - we would have gotten out of the limo and stayed with Miranda in Paris. Oh and the supporting cast? Emily Blunt's garage door eye shadow is a serve and Stanley Tucci starts a career defining arc of the put upon second banana. Is he playing the actual twin brother of his character in Burlesque? This movie spawned a thousand memes and we quote it on the regular, proving once again - Meryl is gay rights. Thats all.

S5 Ep 179179. Brokeback Mountain with special guest Drew Stanley

E

"You know friend, this is a god damn bitch of an unsatifsactory situation." In honor of MTMUG season five we talk about the tragic gay couple to end all gay couples, Brokeback Mountain! I wish we knew how to quit Ang Lee's dramatic masterpiece that made an indent in mainstream queer cinema back in 2005. Brokeback Mountain nominated both of its leads Heath Ledger, and our Jakey Poo for Oscars. They convincingly play these roles for the 20-year span of Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist relationship. Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway are doing equally solid work as their sidelined wives. Sure Michelle's big "Jack Nasty" kitchen scene cemented her first nomination, but our Annie's rodeo queen is just as great. Her big phonecall scene with Heath is a masterclass, that should have at least been nominated for best supporting wig at least! Topics discussed in the episode are rural America Grindr culture, its iconique classic cowboy costumes, the brief apperance by bear icon David Harbor, and the very controversal best picture loss to Crash. Has Oscar loss ever sung more? Put on your pearl and snap western shirt, black cowboy hat, and play your favorite Emmylou Harris song on the truck radio. It's a love that will never grow old, Brokeback Mountain.

Season 4 Finale: Listener Mailbag Episode

E

Season 4 is coming to a close and we couldn't have gotten this far without our listeners! We asked you to ask us anything and you didn't disappoint. We go deep into the origins of the show as well as the origins of Scott & Pete. No we didn't fall into matching vats of toxic waste only to emerge hideously deformed and twisted into the wicked podcast hosts you listen to today. It was industrial waste. We also got some amazing "FMK" (f#ck, marry, kill) suggestions and as it turns out, our listeners are just as messed up as we had hoped. We're taking a short break in the new year to gather our thoughts, but not to worry - MTMUG will be back before you know it with a fresh crop of episodes for Season 5! S4 Ep 178178. The Family Stone with special guest Jackson Cooper

E

"What's so good about you guys?" We watched The Family Stone (2005) with our friend Jackson Cooper and listeners, you owe us one. Nothing says "sentimental holiday classic" like judgemental, mean-spirited WASPs terrorizing Sarah Jessica Parker for 90 minutes. Being the odd-man-out at a family gathering can be intimidating - like starting at a new job where everyone as been working there for years, you feel like a new character added middway through a long-running sitcom. It can be even harder when the family members team up against your for the sin of wearing business attire at home. Listen, there are some fun performances here - God bless Luke Wilson in gray sweatpants, and Elizabeth Reaser is also there. Okay okay, we won't fault the actors performances for the characters being rotted. Maybe we can forgive Diane Keaton for being, shall we say, irritable - since her character is terminally ill - but you have to admit, sometimes she comes off as just plain mean. Now, Christmas movies have an effect on us and this one is no different. We won't begrudge you an annual re-watch of The Family Stone if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy. Just know we're judging you as harshly as the Stone family judges Meredith Morton (SJP) for being so horrible as to wear high heels and a bun outside of business hours. S4 Ep 177177. Less Than Zero with special guest Ben Cheaves

E

It's Christmas in LA, and remember to payback your drug dealer for the 50K you own him! We're rounding out our Bret Easton Ellis discussion on the podcast just in time for the holidays, and watched Less Than Zero with our friend Ben Cheaves from TCM Slumberground. It's a home for the holidays tale as old as time. Clay (Andrew McCarthy) comes back home from his preppy east coast college at the request of his coked out ex-girlfriend Blair (Jami Gertz) to find his out control friend Julian (Robert Downey Jr.) on a drug spiral. Part portrait of 80s excess, and cautionary drug tale, this movie is a fasinating rewatch decades later. We talk about the polarizing sex appeal of Andrew McCarthy, how Jami Gertz is acting in a completely different movie than the rest of the cast. (And we're oddly enough here for it) And how the bisexualness of its source material is heavily toned down from page to screen. Despite all this movies faults (and there are a lot) were still here for it as a perfect time capsule of the mid-1980s from the stacked TVs, Jami's teased hair, to its girl rock anthem Hazy Shade of Winter by the Bangles on its soundtrack. S4 Ep 176176. Anastasia with special guest Donovan Marcotte

E

Move over Prince Eric there's a hunkier animated dream boat in town. We watched Anastasia (1997) with our friend Donovan Marcotte and we would seriously consider giving up royalty for a shot at animated John Cusack. Anastasia was the 1990's animated princess *not* brought to you by the house of mouse, but rather thorn in Disney's side Don Bluth and Gary Goldman - the team behind The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail and The Land Before Time. America's Sweetheart and '90s Icon Meg Ryan is charming as Anastasia and Cusack was making girls and little gay boys feel some type of way as hunky Dimitri. The tragic real-life story of the Romanov Royal Family and the ooky-spooky Rasputin somehow fit in this children's tale of lost love, and reuniting with family (Don Bluth certainly has a thing for families getting separated). Throw in amnesia, a talking bat sidekick and a touch of magic and no, we didn't forget the soundtrack (it's Everything). Don't sleep on the pop version of Journey to the Past sung by none other than Aaliyah. Iconic. S4 Ep 175175. Young Adult with special guest Kelly Hardy

E

"Love conquers all, have you not seen the Graduate? Or like, I don't know, anything?" We're rounding out our Diablo Cody joints this year and invited over the hilarious Kelly Hardy to watch Young Adult. Seeing Charlize Theron as a "psychotic prom queen bitch" who takes on her hometown to rescue to her old beau Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson) from his wife (Elizabeth Reaser) and new born, is dare we say the most refreshing way beautiful people have ever been portrayed in film. This very anti-Hollywood movie rubbed certain people the wrong way when it came out in 2011, but just like Jennifer's Body's we're here to tell you this movie is incredible, and Theron's tour de force performance should have been Oscar nominated. Topics discussed are why gay men might gravitate towards a character as awful, beautiful, and complex as Mavis Gary. Complicated relationships with hometowns, and Patrick Wilson always being cast as the "Dumb Hot Dad" in movies. Grab your room tempeature Diet Coke, and breakout your Teenage Fanclub mixtape, it's Young Adult!

S4 Ep 174174. Clue with special guest Hiko Mitsuzuka

E

"We're trying to find out who killed him, where, and with what!" It's our Black Friday weekend episode, and we watched Clue (1985) with pop culture aficionado Hiko Mitsuzuka @thefirstecho. I hope you recieved your letter, because this is one of our favorite comedies, like ever. This film is instantly quotable (Flames Flames from the sides of my face), and everyone in the cast is bringing their A-game. We talk about the wild range of Tim Curry who did the Worst Witch, and Legend, the same year he played the butler Wadswroth. How Mr. Green (Michael Mckean) made us feel a certain type of way, and discuss the fasinating legacy of this once panned film that's now championed as a comedy classic from an entire generation of children that grew up on it from cable and video rentals. We're all here for the high camp, and glamour of Madeline Kahn's Mrs. White, and Leslie Ann Warren selling sex in every line reading as Miss Scarlett. We hope you like monkey's brains because dinner will be served at 7:30. S4 Ep 173173. Mary Poppins with special guest Daniel Franzese

E

"Winds in the east, mist coming in. Like somethin' a brewin' and 'bout to begin." We watched Mary Poppins (1964) with extra special guest Daniel Franzese and we're ready to join an all chimney sweep dance crew. This movie is a classic, and we're not here to dissect a classic - we're here to sing songs, question parenting skills and thirst over Dick Van Dyke. Listen if we were raising a family in Edwardian London I'm sure I'd use all my resources to hire a governess/nanny to watch the kids so I could march with the suffragettes. Let's be real, we'd probably be old crones selling seeds for tuppence a bag instead of wealthy bankers but either way we'd still write poems about wanting a beautiful nanny to make our beds. And if you're wondering if we immediately watched the classic Simpsons episode that parodies this movie - yes. Yes we did. Come along children. You know the words. S4 Ep 172172. Ghost with special guest Joshua Clement

E

"Molly you in danger girl." We watched the blockbuster romantic fantasy film Ghost directed by Jerry Zucker with our friend Joshua Clement, and all the sudden we feel the urge to take up pottery as a hobby. Ghost made over 500 million dollars in its theatrical run, and was one of the highest grossing romances of the 90s. After 32 years what's not to still love here. It has our forever movie hunk Patrick Swayze, prime Demi Moore as the most beautiful cryer in cinema history, Tony Goldwyn as one of the hottest villians ever, and let's not forget Whoopi Goldberg's Academy Award winning performance as Oda Mae Brown. We still quote, "Damn baby! What did you do to your hair?" and "Do you wanna kiss my butt", on the reg. We talk about what was in the water of the movies of the year 1990 (Pretty Woman, Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves Goodfellas, Misery), the intimidating supporting actress catagory Whoopi was up against, and everyone's favorite Hollywood power couple Bruce and Demi. This movie may not have been meant for gay children in the 90s, but we're here to tell you this movie had a lasting effect on us. Stay away from the shadow demons, and bring your Demi pixie cut reference photo to your Regis it's Ghost! S4 Ep 171171. Hedwig and the Angry Inch with special guest Amber Shaw

E

"When it comes to huge openings, a lot of people think of me." We watched Hedwig and the Angry Inch with our friend Amber Shaw and we're ready for a car wash! We talk about our introduction to this queer classic through the stage production, various versions of the soundtrack and the still-rockin' after 20 years movie. John Cameron Mitchell's snappy dialogue is hilarious and the music by Stephen Trask is face-melting rock and roll that can bring you to tears. We also have to talk about the Glamour - my goodness, the glamour! The wigs, the makeup, the costumes! Any drag queen worth her wig glue owes a debt to Hedwig just like Hedwig owes a bit of her look to certain legends of drag *cough* Jackie Beat *cough cough*. Pour yourself a vermouth on the rocks, grab your wig in a box and get ready for some Eastern bloc Rock! S4 Ep 170170. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors with special guests Tim Murdock and Matt Emert

E

"In my dreams I'm beautiful... and Baaad." We watched A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) with our friends Tim Murdock and Matt Emert from the podcast Happy Horror Time and we need to get some sleep - Ándale! We covered "the gay one"(NOES2) and "the MTV one" (NOES4) and now we're here to talk about the critically aclaimed one. The start of the "dream trilogy" brings back Freddy's original Final Girl Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) as a hot-shot grad student who studies dreams. Kristen Parker (Patricia Arquette) and her fellow troubled teens are the last of the Elm Street Kids and are fighting for their lives (literally) as Freddy is taking them down one by one. We get some radical 80's dream-logic sequences featuring punk rock chicks, D&D wizardry and bodacious nurses - all set to a hair metal soundtrack lead by Dokken and their title track Dream Warriors (which still slaps). The first in the Nightmare "Dream trilogy" is by far the best and quite possibly the most quotable of the entire franchise. "Welcome to prime time, bitch!" S4 Ep 169169. Ed Wood with special guest Jackson Cooper

E

"It's not a monster movie. It's a supernatural thriller." We watched Ed Wood (1994) with our friend and MTUG SuperStar Jackson Cooper and we don't need coverage - the first take was perfect! Ed Wood is often hailed as the worst director of all time and we're here to tell you - "Glen or Glenda" and "Plan 9 From Outer Space" are pretty terrible, but his story is fascinating. Johnny Depp plays Wood as optimistic, a little naive but driven in his quest to make the perfect movie. He doesnt let a little thing like knowing how to direct get in his way. Martin Laundau gives a hilarious and Oscar winning performance as Bela Lugosi and the rest of the cast really shines. We love the Lisa Marie years of Tim Burton's repertoire and she does not disappoint as Vampira aka Maila Nurmi. Burton really captures the rural look and feel of Hollywood in the 50's and if you're like us, the fun of this movie is heading to Youtube to compare the footage to Ed Wood's actual movies - most of which are in the public domain and fully available to stream leagally and for free. 1950's B movies are camp fun and Ed's cross dressing storyline is handled delicately and holds up well for a movie from the 90's about the 50's. You can't get anymore queer than Vampira's BDSM waistline, Ed Wood directing in angora and a room full of cross dressers. S4 Ep 168168. The Craft with special guest Matthew Ownby

E

"We are the weirdos, mister." We call on the four corners with TCM Slumberground's Matthew Ownby, and watched the Craft. As youngins we had this movie checked out more than Justin Theroux during grey sweatpants season. Why do all young gays want to be witches? How do these teenage girls keep getting away with all these dress code violations? Why is Robin Tunney wearing a wig? We unpack all these questions, and much more as we discuss this cult classic. This coven remains just as memorable now as they were when we first watched. As the "bad" witch Nancy, Fairuza Balk slays. And Robin Tunney's "Good Witch" Sarah is our forever witchy goal. We can't forget MTMUG favorites Rachel True, and Neve Cambell who fill out this stacked 90s cast. Hit play on your favorite Connie Francis song on Nancy's mom's jukebox, the witching hour is about to begin. S4 Ep 167167. Night of the Comet with special guest Rudy Bleu

E

It's the apocalypse, and lets go to the mall! We watched Night of the Comet with returning guest Rudy Bleu. When a mysterious comet whipes out most of the life on Earth two valley girls Reggie and Sam find Los Angeles all to themsleves. In this clever blend of horror, sci-fi, comedy these sisters kick butt, ride motorcyles, play videogames, take over an abandoned radio station, shoot uzis, and then hit the mall. Night of the Comet truly checks all the boxes for cult films, and it's why it's one of our favorites. We wouldn't have Buffy Summers if it weren't for Catherine Mary Stewart, and Kelli Maroney. We discuss our apocalypse playlists, where we'd go if we had LA all to ourselves, and hot department store stock boys who might or might not be zombies. www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

S4 Ep 166166. Lifeguard with special guest Love Connie

E

What do you say to 90 minutes of primo late-'70s Sam Elliot parading around in short-shorts and being an all-around macho stud? We say "Gimme, gimme, gimme!" We watched Lifeguard (1976) with the amazing Love Connie and we're trying to grow out our mustaches by sheer will power. Sam Elliot plays career lifeguard Rick and he's our hero. He's got a swinging bachelor pad, a sweet car and pretty much lives the life of a gay man... only you know, with women. If you're not familiar with Sam Elliot's earlier work - you're welcome. This movie is so horny we need a moment to collect ourselves. We talk with Connie about seeing this movie way too young and Sam making us all feel some type of way, and Connie spills the tea on her time on set of the iconique comedy Legally Blonde! Speedos, mustaches and Bend 'n Snap origin stories - oh my! S4 Ep 165165. Y tu mamá también with special guest Sandra Espinoza

E

"Life is like the surf, so give yourself away like the sea." We watched Y tu mamá también (2001) with our friend Sandra Espinoza and we're packing the station wagon for a roadtrip to Boca del Cielo. Time is a hell of a concept and man did it do a number on us when we re-watched this classic of Mexican cinema. As young lads first introduced to this film, we were struck by the beauty of its cast, its locations and its story, but as aged queens of the 2020's we've really changed who we identify with. Of course as teens coming to grips with our queerness we sided with the beautiful Julio (Gael García Bernal) and Tenoch (Diego Luna) and their spontaneous beach trip. Now that we're grown - it's fully team Luisa (Maribel Verdú) who feels like she's babysitting without getting paid. Masterfully directed by Alfonso Cuarón and shot by Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki - it captures the beauty of Mexico in a way not often seen in American movies. No yellow filter to be found - just 2 boys, a girl, a lot of tequila and colorful translations of Mexican slang. No mames guey! S4 Ep 164164. Beautiful Thing with special guest Jesse Krempel

E

"It's not natural, is it? A girl at her age being into Mama Cass." We watched the 1996 British film Beautiful Thing with Jesse Krempel from Cult Cinema Circle. As one of the most beloved "gay" movies from the 1990s, Beautiful Thing always feels a little more special than a traditonal "coming out" story. Set around a tower block South-London apartment building we follow Jamie (Glen Berry) and his neighbor Ste (Scott Neal) as they navigate their budding sexuality, and feelings for each other. We love this sweet movie (filled with the hits of Cass Elliot), as well as its supporting cast of characters. First there Jamie's mum Sandra (played with a spit-fire panache by Linda Henry), and her hot hippy boyfriend Tony (Ben Daniels). And we can't forget Tameka Empson scene stealing performance as Leah! We talk about first gay bar adventures, sneaking looks at gay magazines at newstands, and why this movie rises above most mediocre coming-of-age gay movies that would follow it. S4 Ep 163163. La Belle et la Bête (1946)

E

"My Beast! My Beast! Answer me, my Beast! Answer me, my Beast!" We watched the insanely beautiful 1946 Jean Cocteau film La Belle et la Bête, and excuse us as we glide down a windy hallway like were in the It's All Coming Back Me Now video. There's wouldn't be the 1991 Disney animated movie, or power ballad music videos, if it weren't for Cocteau's flamboyant take on the ye old 1757 French fairy tale. We dissect the drag styling of Jean Marais as the Beast. Marvel at how beautiful Josettte Day's Belle is. S4 Ep 162162. The Truth About Cats and Dogs with special guest Oscar Montoya

E

"If you were trapped in Biosphere 2 for three years, who would you bring: Time Magazine's Woman of the Year or Playboy's Playmate of the Year?" We watched our favorite 90s romantic comedy The Truth About Cats and Dogs with our friend Oscar Montoya from HBO Max's Minx. This 90s catfish story by the way of Cyrano de Bergerac is super charming, and classic 'Best Friend Cinema'. Is there anything gay men love more than two women getting along in a movie? We talk about pre-sexting phone sex, 1996's Sexiest Man Alive, 90's movie soundtracks, and why Uma Thurman would win America's Next Top Model. Maybe pitting six foot Uma next to five foot Janeane Garofalo, and having all the men in the movie treat Janeane like a sea hag is a tad misogynistic, but the friendship between the two rings more true with us than the shoe-horned in romance. Janeane and Uma's chemistry can power a small town compared to our two male best friends(?) Ben Chaplin and Jamie Foxx. Don't get us wrong, Ben Chaplin has a 90's sexiness that we try really hard to pinpoint (are we into unibrows now?). Keep your eyes (and ears) pealed for cameos by 90's comedy icons Bob Odenkirk, David Cross and Mary Lynn Rajskub while Scott and Pete take you on a tour of L.A.'s West Side gone-by. S4 Ep 161161. Jennifer's Body with special guest Lauren Ogle

E

"Hell is a teenage girl." We talk about the Karyn Kusama cult horror comedy Jennifer's Body this week with our bestie Lauren Ogle from Keep it Weird, and we can't help but be lesbigay for Megan Fox. As Jennifer Check, the demon possesed boy killer who chows down on the patriarchy, Fox has never been more in her element. The Diablo Cody penned script was sorely overlooked when it came out in 2009, but has since been reassesed as a feminst classic. We love its lead heroine Anita "Needy" Lesnicki played by Amanda Seyfried, and are secret Low Shoulder stans of Adam Brody's Nikolai, the true villian of the movie. We always knew what Kusama, and Cody had with this wonderful movie, and am glad everyone else has finally come around. If you need us we'll be listening to Through the Trees on repeat. S4 Ep 160160. Welcome to the Dollhouse with special guest Seth Shubin

E

Not all girls want to play with dolls. It's been 27 years since Todd Solondz's Welcome to the Dollhouse, and we're here to tell you that it's still savage AF. Seth Subin from @jerkofalltrades joins us again to discuss this pitch black coming-of- age comedy, and we really just want to give Dawn Wiener a hug and tell her it's all going to be alright. We get into the 90s icon that is Heather Matarazzo as the ultimate outsider in us all. Dawn launched her to bigger movies like 54, Princess Diaries, and Saved. Matarazzo's Dawn Wiener is just as potent now as it was when we first got our hands on a copy of this movie. We talk about Brendan Sexton III, as the type of damaged bully we all remember growing up, and the beautiful himbo Steve Rogers (played by Eric Mabius). This movie is essential 90s cinema, and we're not entirely sure if a movie like it could be made today. S4 Ep 159159. Spice World with special guest Courtney Barriger

E

Girl power takes over this week on MTMUG, and we had our friend Courtney Barriger over to watch Spice World (1997). This camp classic Hard Days Night take on the 90s girl group phenomenon "The Spice Girls" took us all back. Ginger, Scary, Baby, Sporty, and Posh. We love all of these empowered women, and their movie is an out of control good time. Name another film that has an alien encounter, a high octane speed boat chase, boot camp choreography, a fashion montage, and live child birth scene! And don't worry, we get into the famous double decker Spice Bus, that looks as spacious as the TARDIS from Dr. Who. Don't believe anyone who says this is bad, it's a blast filled with unexpectedly solid comedic performances. (Seriously, we didn't remember Victoria Beckham getting the most laughs here) You might have to dig through your old VHS collection to get ahold of this one. How is this camp masterpiece nowhere to found on streaming? Blah, Blah, Blah, Girl Power, You know wot I mean? S4 Ep 158158. The Hours with special guest Jackson Cooper

E

"I believe I have the first sentence." We watched The Hours (2002) with MTMUG SuperStar Jackson Cooper and we are ready to get sad! Can you believe this titan of gayness of 20 years old? The sheer star power of Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore is enough to power all of West Hollywood for a month! We talk about where we were when we realized this wasn't just a movie about glamourous and nervous white ladies, but about lesbians through the ages. Nicole Kidman (and to some degree her facial prosthetics) as the salty Virginia Woolf may have won the Oscar, but Julianne Moore as unfulfilled melancholic housewife Laura Brown really stuck with us when we first saw this as baby gays. The big reveal (20 year old spoiler alert) had us all geeked, gagged and gooped and we're still recovering. Even the ultra-dramatic cacophany of the Philip Glass score is somehow super gay. Nic may not have known it yet then but this movie proves that our heroes really do feel like the best parts of us and stories really do feel perfect and powerful. Well, you know the rest. S4 Ep 157157. Who Framed Roger Rabbit with special guest Dax Exclamationpoint

E

"I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way." We watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit with the Queen of all nerds herself, Dax Exclamationpoint and things are about to get real nerdy up in here. This movie was the original Multiverse of Madness for kids in the '80s and '90s. We collectively lost our tiny minds when we saw the titans of Disney and Warner Brothers together on screen for the first time! Jessica Rabbit, voiced to perfection by the amazing Kathleen Turner, may have been a sexual awakening for a generation of straight boys - but for the gays she was a revalation. She introduced gay kids across the land to Glamour with a capital G and we've been chasing that glittery high ever since. Joanna Cassidy ("I'm right on top of that Rose") is doing the lords work delivering the silliest of lines with deadpan drama and looking like a million bucks in these '40s fashions. This movie also collectively traumatized a generation of kids with it's batsh*t villain Judge Doom, played to chilling perfection by Christopher Lloyd. If you're into voluptuous cartoon babes, onscreen murder of cute cartoon characters and plenty of sexual innuendo this is the kids movie for you! S4 Ep 156156. Commando with special guests Ben Cheaves and Millie De Chirico

E

Let's Party! We watched one of the gayest action movies to come out of the 1980s Commando with our TCM friends Ben Cheaves and Millie De Chirico. Y'all this movie is insane, and doesn't get nearly enough credit for making Arnold Schwarzenegger the movie star he is today. Arnold plays an ex-special ops soldier living in the woods with his daughter played by Samantha from Who's the Boss, Alyssa Milano. When his daughter is kidnapped by an evil dictator played by Dan Hedaya he must use his Captain America strength to hunt down the men responsible. We discuss if this movie is actually a love story between Arnold and the International Male clad Vernon Wells from Mad Max 2, its smart talking sidekick played with perfect comic timing by Rae Dawn Chong, and if Arnold in that black swim brief leave us feeling a certain way? S4 Ep 155155. The Royal Tenenbaums with special guest Donovan Marcotte

E

"I always wanted to be a Tenenbaum, you know?" We watched The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) with our friend Donovan Marcotte and we're all of us especially *not* a genius. This "quirky" family dramedy is peak Wes Anderson and quote possibly his best film. Fight us. We all laugh a little too nervously as Gene Hackman's Royal Tenenbaum eviscerates with words everyone in his path - even his children and ex wife (too real?). Are every hipster couple in their Margot and Richie Halloween costumes missing the point of the movie completely? Maybe. Either way we still wish were an inkling as cool as Margot, as smart as Chas and as sensitive as Richie. But at the end of the day maybe we're all just Eli Cash watching from the window across the street. S4 Ep 154154. Terms of Endearment with special guest Darren Stein

E

"Give my daughter the shot!" We watched the James L. Brooks movie Terms of Endearment with the writer/director of Jawbreaker Darren Stein, and we are here to remind you that it's one of the best films to come out of the 1980s. This movie's biggest fans are in the gay community, and can anyone read a queen to filth like Aurora Greenway? "You are not special enough to overcome a bad marriage." And nobody would have played her better than the cinematic treasure that is Shirley MacLaine, and she has the Oscar to prove it. We talk about the "turbulent brilliance" of Debra Winger. The most Jack role Jack Nicholson has ever played. The Patrick Nagel come to life Patsy played by Lisa Hart Carroll, and stealth hottie Jeff Daniels. S4 Ep 153153. Mulholland Drive with special guest Zoë Secret

E

Silencio! We watched Mulholland Drive (2001) with our friend Zoë Secrest and we're still pretty confused. This Hollywood dreamscape from director David Lynch has everything - parking lot hags, amnesiacs in shake-and-go wigs, and Justin Theroux in tinted glasses. We discuss "the secret of Mulholland Drive" and attempt to dissect the mystery behind this puzzlebox of a film. Spoiler alert - we still probably haven't solved it. Do you have to watch the movie before you enjoy this episode - we won't hold it against you, but don't hold our cuckoo theories as cold hard facts. That's what IMDB trivia is for. S4 Ep 152152. In & Out with special guest Chris Gallo

E

"Does anybody here know how many times I had to watch 'Funny Lady'?" We watched In & Out (1997) with our friend Chris (@golden_girls_posters) and Hot damn, what a faboulous window treatment... wait that was a trick! We still have questions about the premise, but you can't beat this cast with a stick. Kevin Kline nails it as an in the closet (?) high school teacher who gets outed by a famous former student. Somehow his mincing and general gayness isnt quite as offensive as a certain soon-to-be-former talk show host and we were still loling at the physical humor. Joan Cusack once again steals every scene she's in and absolutely deserves her Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. I still think Debbie Reynolds dressed as Thelma Harper is a hate crime especially in a movie as gay as this but it was 1997. Times and attitudes have changed but thanks to some knock out comedic performances this movie doesn't need to get cancelled... yet. E

"L.A is like… nowhere. Everyone who lives here is lost." We put some gas in the VCR this week to talk about the Gregg Araki film Nowhere with guest Seth Shubin @jerkofalltrades. Described in the marketing as "90210 was on Acid" this cast is a who's who of up and coming Hollywood. With early appearances by Ryan Phillippe, Heather Graham, Scott Caan, Mena Suvari, Denise Richards, as well as Araki staple James Duval, Nowhere is one of the hidden gems of the 90s. We talk about the once again genius castings of his films (Christina Applegate, Guillermo Diaz, Kathleen Robertson), the more insane celebrity cameos, and terrific soundtrack that's still a staple of our car CD player. S4 Ep 150150. The Doom Generation with special guest Rudy Bleu

E

We made it to episode 150, and we finally got to the long awaited "Heterosexual Movie by Gregg Araki", The Doom Generation with our friend Rudy Bleu. The anti-Clueless, this movie was every alternative young person's bible. Following two troubled teen lovers (James Duval and Rose McGowan) who pick up a mysterious drifter named Xavier (Jonathan Schaech) and run wild through the slums of the San Fernando Valley. The Doom Generation is quintessential 90s viewings. We talk about the sexual charge of Jonathan Schaech's eyebrows, James Duval's puppy dog delivery, the wild celebrity cameos by the likes of Eve Plumb, Amanda Bearse, Heidi Fleiss, and how iconic Rose McGowan is in that black bob. We're not just talking candle wax on the nipples or witchcraft, or chip, dips, chain n whips, we're talking about the renegade John Hughes movie "Weird Science" (1985) with our favorite straight brother Dylan Hay-Chapman. Kelly LaBrock is insanely fierce as Lisa, the Marry Poppins for teenage boys. The gays want to be her, and the straights well you know… We talk about all the iconique Lisa costume changes, '80s bad boy cuties Robert Downey Jr and Robert Rusler, a scene stealing Bill Paxton, and the two teenage boys (Anthony Michael Hall, and Ilan Mitchell-Smith) at the center of one of the horniest teen movies ever made. With guest Drew Stanley @nameverb we talk about Ripley, the rest of the Nostromo Crew (humm Daddy Tom Skerritt), and yes the titular Alien aka Xenoporph queen herself. E

"Slick your hair and wear your buckle shoes… And all that jazz." We watched the 2002 Rob Marshall directed musical 'Chicago' with our buddy Pickens Barringer, and all a sudden we are overcome with belting THAT JAZZZ while dancing to Bob Fosse choreo. Twenty years later it's still one of the best stage to screen musicals ever. We talk about the casting perfection going on here. That Oscar was in the clear for Catherine Zeta Jones in the first number alone. Everything going on here is seamlessly staged by Marshell, and we talk about the multiverse of Roxie and Velma casting possiblities. "Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!" We watched Auntie Mame (1958) with our friend Darren Elms and someone get us a Dr. Pepper! There's just something about a glamorous woman of a certain age that gay boys just gravitate towards. We all want to be as fabulous as Auntie Mame someday, even though we may be more like Agnes Gooch. Rosalind Russel's iconic performance as Mame is truly living life like a gay man, or a drag queen. E

"It's like MTV but with an edge." We watched Reality Bites (1994) directed by Ben Stiller and we're gonna go grab a couple of Big Gulps. We're back with the winner of our Janeane Garofalo mini challenge and we're jumping in the way-back machine to take a trip to the 90's! Generation X, irony-loving, thrift store-shopping, 70's sitcom-quoting slackers abound in this comic coming of age story. Recent college grad Lelaina (Winona Ryder) and her pals are trying to navigate life, love and work in the real world. Constant pop culture references and wall to wall nostalgia really paved the way for sitcom writing for years to come. Snappy dialogue, great clothes, cute boys and not to mention a killer soundtrack keep us coming back to re-live the 90's. E

"Turn Back, Sarah. Turn back before it's too late." We watched Labyrinth (1986) with our good-Judy Jared Anderson and we wish the Goblin King would come and take you away… right now. Sixteen-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelley) faces off against Jareth the Goblin King (David Bowie) and a generation's sexual awakening began. Bowie is giving androgynous ren-faire realness and Connelley is giving ethereal drama-kid/teen model. And you can trust and believe we get into that cod-piece. Is it icky that the Goblin King is so actively seducing this young girl? A little, but it's all fantasy and (spoiler alert) Sarah finds her way back to her kick ass bedroom in her dad and stepmoms sweet Victorian house in Portland. The puppet work by Jim Henson's Creature Shop will transport you to another world, the costumes will make you want to head over to Party City right now, and the MUSIC! Don't get us started on the soundtrack by David Bowie. It's FIRE. Grab a cold mug of mead, break out your tights and lets get theatrical! Say it with us… "You have no power over me!" E

"That was a thirty-two dollar sweater, missy, and you dyed it black, didn't you?" We watched Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael (1990) with the always outrageous Michael Morgan and I could use an Almond Roca. Gen-X Queen Winona Ryder is at it again, this time playing strange and unusual all-black-wearing loner Dinkey Bossetti. Dinky is obsessed with the cute boy in her class, feeding stray animals and the town legend, the mysterious Roxy Carmichael. We never picked up on the Sapphic under (and over) tones in this movie until this watching, but man - this movie is gay! From the Melissa Etheridge soundtrack, the over-sexed townies waking up to post coital brunch, and don't get us started on the guidance counselor. Are the fleeting images of Roxy in her L.A. manse all in Dinky's head? And if they are - why is she always naked?! And most importantly, we answer the age old question - is Jeff Daniels hot? E

"I'm glad to be here with you Samwise Gamgee. Here at the end of all things." We watched The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King all by our damn selves and we're ready for second breakfast. OK let's be real, these movies aren't exactly passing the Bechtel Test but when the ladies are finally trotted out they're serving fragrance commercial Eleganza and we're loving every fleeting minute of it. Orlando Bloom as Legolas the Elf ignited many a sexual awakening and the Hobbits are really giving us a lot to work with in this episode. Did Frodo and Sam get gay Hobbit married on the side of that mountain? We like to think so. Once circuit-gay Gollum gets thrown into the volcano and destroys the Ring Frodo goes through his emo phase, Sam marries a lady-Hobbit and they both act like their mountain-top wedding never happened. A likely story. "What's the point of doing anything worthwhile if nobody's watching? And if people are watching, it makes you a better person." We watched To Die For (1995) with our good bestie Ashley from Keep It Weird Podcast!! It's Oscar season and we are here for our Nic! Enough time has passed that we can honestly say Nicole Kidman was ROBBED of an Oscar nomination for her bat-S crazy performance in this film. Joaquin Phoenix is serving teenage dirtbag who doesn't know any better but bless him, he's so cute. Suzanne Stone is officially the best stage name on earth and she had a dream of being on TV but if Matt Dillon wanted to run an Italian restaurant and we could stay home and be a kept wife… props to ya momma. S4 Ep 139139. Star Trek with Seán Ferrick

E

We talk ALL things Star Trek with ultimate Trek encyclopedia Seán Ferrick (TrekCulture) and we're boldly going… you know the rest. Why are queer people so drawn to Star Trek? That's like asking why gays love horror - no one knows! Well some people know. Star Trek promised us a vision of the future free from poverty, sexism and prejudice (just don't look too deep into the origins of the Klingons) and us gays long for a place where we can just be ourselves right? Star Trek also promises us a future filled with metallic non-stretch fabrics, pointy sideburns and catsuits for everyone! This episode we take a deep dive into the Star Trek The Next Generation episode "The Outcast" from 1992 which takes a veiled look at homosexuality and gender when Riker (Jonathan Frakes) falls for a member of a non-binary alien species (played by a cis-female actor). We talk about what lured us into Star Trek, what we still love about the franchise all these years later and how we would make a living in the Star Trek universe. Guinan has gotta need a bar back right? In the Trek universe the men are macho, the women are fabulous and the gays can't get enough of it. Live long, and prosper!

"Mothers, lock up your sons!" We watched Thirteen (2003) with our friend Donovan Marcotte and we're still clutching our pearls. Your wanna feel like a granny, out of touch with the kids these days? Watch this movie. Catherine Hardwicke directed this groundbreaking indie from a script she co-wrote with then teenage Nikki Reed (The Twilight Saga). Evan Rachel Wood and Reed play best friends wrapped up in the unparalleled drama of teenage friendship - where every decision you made was life or death. And some of these outfits are to die for. We're talking early Avril Lavigne levels of safety pins, cutouts and stripes. Holly Hunter knocks it out of the park (per usual) as Wood's put upon mom and Jeremy Sisto is dreamy as ever. We must be getting old - we're rooting for the parents and just want to shake these girls and tell em to SNAP OUT OF IT! S4 Ep 137137. Terminator 2: Judgment Day with special guest Lucas Hazlitt

E

"I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle." We watched Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) with the very funny Lucas Hazlett and man do we love this movie. It's a known fact that we Stan Jim Cameron, but this episode goes deep into why. The man knows how to write a screenplay. T2 is the sequel to a low budget scifi indie and it has gone down as one of the most influential movies of the 90s. Aside from being a SOLID script - the copious amount of buns, the two daddy's vying for the attention of the kid, the Village People aesthetic - it all ads up to a gay boys dreams. Throw in Linda Hamilton butching is up - we can't give this movie enough love. Oh and we get into some really critical thinking about the time travel in this one! Hasta la vista babies! S4 Ep 136136. Jawbreaker with special guest Thomas Dekker

E

"Never send a rose unless dyed black as a warning." We watched Jawbreaker (1999) with the fablous Thomas Dekker and we killed the teen dream. Deal with it. Darren Stein wrote and directed this candy colored fantasy and we are all the gayer for it. Rose McGowan absolutely devours every line she delivers (and there are some doozys) with Rebecca Gayheart and Julie Benz giving us prototype mean girls. Judy Greer kills it as Fern Mayo/Vylette and the supporting cast of Pam Grier, Carol Kane, Jeff Conaway (and a couple of "Carrie" cameos) are *chefs kiss*. Jawbreaker is inconic and if you ever said Rose McGowan was your crush - you're gay now. We don't make the rules. "Lifes a bitch, then you die."
