What's the difference between an IEP and a 504 plan? While many kids with ADHD do well in school, a much greater percentage struggle to excel. The system is complicated and confusing. The first step is understanding what your options are. In public schools in the US, there are both 504 plans and IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) to help students with disabilities struggle less. Today I'm inviting you into an ADHD coaching call with a mom who asked for help in understanding how to help her son who seems to be doing okay so far… but what about when he doesn't? While we usually focus on you, the mom, in your coaching call, we often we will discuss your kids because they are who made you a mom! It's June, and your kids are either home now or about to be home for the whole summer. That is three unstructured months of chaos ahead of you... cue panic! Wait! It doesn't have to be! You asked; I answered: What does Patricia's summer schedule look like? With a few minutes of planning, you'll create a flexible structure to fit any family during the summer break and all year long. No need to panic nor roll your eyes at me! Having a schedule doesn't mean you're stuck with a minute-by-minute inflexible itinerary sucking the fun out of every hour. Your summer vacation can still be full of fun and freedom and impromptu activities without you losing your sanity on the daily. Having a running list of activities to keep everyone entertained keeps my stress down and decision fatigue low. There's no scrambling around in the morning trying to figure out, "Mom, what are we going to do today?" Or the wasted mornings where I can't figure out what the answer is, and all of a sudden its lunchtime, and I still don't know what we're going to do today, and it's half over! Today we're walking through what the schedule setup looks like, as well as how I have implemented that framework for our family with specifics on time and activities. E135: Discounting Disability and Dismissing Disadvantages: Why We Don't All Have the Same 24 Hours in a Day

True or false: we all have the same 24 hours in a day…? If you said FALSE, you're 100% right, mama. Sure, we have 24 physical hours. But depending on our abilities, circumstances and responsibilities… Those hours look VERY different. To a carefree, neurotypical teenaged boy, an hour might feel like eternity. He can hang out with friends, do some homework, watch a show, eat some food. Leisurely. To a work-at-home mama of 3 with ADHD, dinner on the stove, laundry to fold, an appointment she's late for, keys she can't find (again) and a puppy that needs house training… Not so much. A 500lb barbell is the same weight to an Olympic weightlifting champion as it is to me! But he and I have a unique set of skills and abilities that mean he can lift it, while I just look at it and laugh. Time is the same way, friend. It's measured the same. But we are not all equipped equally in how we spend it. You're putting in double the effort to get half the output than other people can. I see you. E134: Hate Reading and Math? You're Not Stupid! How Irlen Syndrome Affects Your Learning Affects Your Vision and Learning

Do you struggle with reading or math? Do you lose your place easily when working? Is reading sheet music ridiculously hard? Well, it might not be your eyes OR your ADHD, mama. It might be something called Irlen Syndrome. Not only does it tend to go along with ADHD (& autism!), it can lead to misdiagnosis. Irlen Syndrome, also called Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, is a perceptual processing disorder, not a vision problem. For those of us who have it, it can lead to some funky vision impairment and: - Extreme light sensitivity - Wanting/needing to read in dim light - Seeing waves or "rivers" in between the lines of text as we read - Poor depth perception - Bad coordination issues & clumsiness - Low self-esteem or motivation …and more. However, even if you get this diagnosis, there's good news: There are things that can help!
