Ep 408Wim Hof - Breathe, Motherf***er
EThere are moments in the podcast life that aren't just a highlight, they straight-up blow your mind. Wim Hof has been an inspiration for me and many friends and men I've worked with for years now. I finally got him on the show to talk about what led to him discovering cold immersion therapy and breathwork, what happens to the body and the nervous system during breathwork or when you're feeling fear, its effects on inflammation, and the ultimate purpose of men. Do. Not. Miss. This. Also, in honor of this episode, I partnered up with TheColdPlunge.com, whose work I love. I use mine daily and the simplicity is an absolute game changer. Ep 407Danielle LaPorte - Leading With Love
Forgiveness doesn't often come easy, but it's a big part of being human. And self-forgiveness? This is something many, many men come to me with questions about. Danielle is an old friend and I'm deeply grateful to have sat down with her on this topic. We also cover what it looks like to actually deal with our fears—to compassionately work with them and other patterns that may hold us back. Danielle LaPorte is a member of Oprah’s SuperSoul 100 a group who, in Oprah Winfrey’s words, “is uniquely connecting the world together with a spiritual energy that matters.” The former director of a future studies think tank in Washington, DC, where she managed a team creating global scenarios. She now speaks about the intelligence of the heart. Her most recent book, How To Be Loving…when your heart is breaking open and the world is waking up, is also an Audiobook + ebook, with a companion deck and journal. Danielle is also the author of The Fire Starter Sessions, The Desire Map, White Hot Truth, and producer of dozens of meditation kits and online programs for spiritual support. Danielle is the creator of the Heart Centered Membership and the Heart Centered Leadership Program with 400+ leaders in 30 countries hosting conversation circles, retreats, and workshops in all kinds of communities and businesses. Her podcast, With Love, Danielle, often ranks in iTunes’ top 10 for wellness. Most of her offerings—from the Heart Centered Membership to her online classes—are on a pay what you choose basis. Named one of the Top 100 Websites for Women by Forbes, millions of people a month visit DanielleLaPorte.com. Marianne Williamson refers to Danielle “as a bright light.” V (formerly known as Eve Ensler) calls her “a force field of energy, wonder, humour, and love.” Her charities of choice are Ally Global Foundation, helping survivors of human trafficking to rebuild their lives (@allyglobal), Trees Sisters’ reforestation projects (@treesisters_official), and VDay, a movement to end violence against women and girls (vdayorg). Should Men Get Better Or Women Lower Their Expectations?
bonusYou work in coaching and stick around on social media for five minutes and you'll see variations of these questions. And a lot of vitriol alongside. It's not that simple. It never is. Ep 406Dr. Marisa Franco - The Profound Science Of Friendship
Seriously, this was a fantastic and mind-opening conversation. I get asked a lot about how to make—and keep—friends, and in a world that increasingly tries to isolate us, it's more important than ever to cultivate the SKILL of making friends. Dr. Franco and I lean into how friendship impacts depression and purpose, her NYT bestselling book (which is @#$%ing good), how attachment style impacts how you perceive friends, and of course, why you should build your friend circle consciously and deliberately. Dr. Marisa Franco is a New York Times bestselling author, professor, and psychologist. She communicates the science of connection in digestible ways and is passionate about sharing research with the people it could help the most. Franco holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Maryland and works as a professor there currently. She writes for Psychology Today and has been a featured psychologist in The New York Times, NPR, and Good Morning America. Dr. Franco delivers talks about connection and belonging all over the country to private companies, universities, and non-profit organizations. Sexless Marriages, Divorce, And The Insanity Of Modern Relationships
bonusIt's a jungle out there. No, seriously. It doesn't take a lot of googling to discover that the modern dating and relationship scene is hard. On everyone. So we're going to dig into some of stats, research, and things I've been hearing directly from men about what they're experiencing, what they're seeing, and why things don't look too good right now. Tell Her What The !@#$ You Want
bonusI've seen it happen too often. Men get this idea that they shouldn't have (or express) any needs. Then they lose sight of those needs and they and their partner are left guessing, reactive, and confused. This is a particular problem for Nice Guys. Did you enjoy the podcast? Ep 403Tim Corcoran - The Purpose Crisis
This has got to be the soonest I've had a guest return for a "part 2" conversation. Tim is an expert at connecting people their purpose, something he considers soul-based. Our last conversation was powerful, but I felt we'd just scratched the surface. So dig in with us here on why so many men feel purposeless, the role nature plays in that, how technology alters how we connect, and much, much more. Tim Corcoran is the founder of Purpose Mountain, where he serves as a certified Nature-Based Purpose Guide to support people who hear the call from wild nature to discover their purpose, those with a burning desire to live their vision and a willingness to work with resistance and fears through the Ecology of Self and Voice Dialogue. Tim is a leader of men’s groups and holistic rites of passage for males, guiding and initiating men and boys into the new paradigm of the mature masculine. Since 1999, Tim has dedicated his life towards consciously furthering this vision of living in balance with the Earth, community, family, self, spirit, and soul. Healing the cultural rift between the mainstream and indigenous cultures, transformational consciousness work, the spiritual journey, ancestral work, deep nature connection, family and holistic health are all deep commitments in his life. Why You're Not Happy With Your Relationship

How To Create Direction In Your Relationship
bonusGetting clear on where you'd like a relationship to go isn't always easy, and I think a lot of us men simply weren't given any skills on how to do this. Seriously, it's always a pleasure to speak with Rainier, whose passionate wonder never fails to fire me up. Rainier and I get into some fuller questions in here, ones that we'll definitely be revisiting soon. Listen in for thoughts on how to practice self-acceptance, what these times are asking of us (and men, specifically), the psyche's earliest and most potent defense mechanism, and more. Why She Won't Let You Lead
bonusLeadership in the context of your relationship is a tricky subject, but it's something I'm asked about daily by both men and women. So naturally, I've dedicated a lot of time lately to the subject. When it comes to questions like "why won't she let me take the lead", there are all sorts of reasons—and all sorts of responses. I share some of those here, including responses to my own content that have surprised me. What would you add to this? Anything I miss? DM me @mantalks on Instagram. Did you enjoy the podcast? Ep 399Men's Work Session - Healing Your Relationship To Anger
(Apologies in advance, something was up with the audio for this one) Now and then, I put out the call and feature a session with someone I’ve never worked with before. This work took place over the course of an hour or so, and we've shorted it here for easier listening. My guest today is someone who grew up in a hostile environment, and his end result as an adult was a feeling of numbness and a hard time recognizing the emotions he felt. We work to identify and give voice to what he's feeling, particularly his anger and sadness. I've wrestled with numbness too, and I'm sure there are a lot of guys out there in similar situations. So listen in and don't forget to share with someone you feel might benefit from this kind of work. Did you enjoy the podcast? How To Lead Yourself Effectively
bonusThis month I've been talking a lot about leading in the context of relationship, and how you're influencing and guiding yourself is one of the more important parts of the equation. There's a lot of advice that frames leadership as something you "do" to other people, but it often skips and important questions: how are you leading YOU? Ep 398Robert Breedlove - The Future Of Bitcoin, Money, And Inflation
Cryptocurrency has been an interest of mine for a long time now, so naturally I asked Robert to come on the show to give some high-level insight into what's happened, happening, and might happen in the future. We cover the foundational aspects of money and why gold was the "standard" for so long, the differences between gold, fiat currency, and bitcoin, and a lot more. Listen in! What Does Relational Leadership Look Like?
bonusI recently released some content all about how important it is for men to lead in the context of a relationship. It got a ton of traction, lots of questions, and requests to clarify/dig deeper. So let's truly dig into it! This is the first of four mini-episodes focused entirely on "relational leadership": the way you guide, support, and lead your relationship (and your partner) as necessary. Did you enjoy the podcast? Ep 397Jason Kander - The Invisible Storm Of PTSD
A lot of misunderstanding surrounds Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and yet it's one of most impactful injuries that can happen to a person. So when I heard of Jason Kander, a former Army Captain and political leader who's been decisively honest with his experience, I immediately wanted him on the show to shed some light. It was an honor. Jason provides a more nuanced and experienced definition of what PTSD is and what it feels like, and we cover how PTSD affected Jason's mindset, career, wife, and family. If you're a veteran (or know one) and this show resonates, don't hesitate to call the Veterans Crisis Line; call 988 and then hit 1 to speak with someone (or text 838255). In Canada, call 1-800-268-7708, and in Australia, 1800 011 046. Jason Kander is a former Army Captain and intelligence officer who served in Afghanistan, and was the first millennial ever elected to a statewide office. He is the current president of national expansion at Veterans Community Project, a non-profit providing housing and walk-in services to American veterans, and co-founder of the Afghan Rescue project, a non-profit that has safely gotten over 1700 men, women, and children out of Afghanistan. Kander is also the host of Majority 54, a popular political podcast. Jason’s first book, Outside the Wire was a New York Times bestseller, as is his second book Invisible Storm: A Soldier's Memoir of Politics and PTSD, a brutally honest memoir of his struggle (and healing) with PTSD. He lives in Kansas City with his family. Stop Trying To Figure Her Out
bonusIf you scroll around in the manosphere long enough, you'll come across the idea that all women are understandable in the exact same way, and if you just follow some specific modality (that usually costs an arm and a leg) you'll understand women better than they understand themselves... Uh, that's not how any of this works, so listen in for a different approach and stop doing both women and yourself a disservice. Let me know what you think; hit me up @mantalks on Instagram. Ep 396GS Youngblood - The Art Of Embodiment
I've recently had a lot of men ask me about embodiment. What does it mean? Why does that term get thrown around so much? Hot on the heels of last week's episode with John Wineland (another embodiment coach) comes GS Youngblood, a friend of mine who's been working and coaching embodiment practices for years. This is a great episode if you want to truly get a feel for what embodiment means, how it's practiced, and why it's so effective. GS even takes me through a short, two minute "sample" practice. We also dig into how embodiment can help with sex, desire discrepancy, overwhelm, and more. GS Youngblood coaches men in relationship and how to live, love, and lead from their masculine core. He has been a student and creator in the fields of men's work for over a decade. Through this lens of masculine leadership, he also pulls in principles from a variety of fields: psychology, martial arts, tango, meditation, and BDSM. All of his writings are filtered through the laboratory of his and his clients' real-world, long-term relationships (including both the successes and spectacular failures) to see what actually works and what doesn't. Can You Fail Your Way To Remarkable?
bonusThe answer's yes, but not in the way you might think. I don't mean "failing upwards", and I definitely don't mean spending all your mental energy worrying about what might happen. This is about treating failure as motivation. As fuel. Listen in. Did you enjoy the podcast? If so, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser. Ep 395John Wineland - Integration, Your Masculine Core, And How To Embody It All
Is there anything better than having an old friend on your podcast? John is a brilliant and passionate mind in the realm of masculine wellness, and we cover a ton of ground here. What "integration" actually means, John's new book, why disconnect and fear can be so damaging, the temptation to just layer new knowledge on top of old patterns. This is a big one, so listen in. Known for his groundbreaking work with men, John travels world-wide teaching his vision of embodied men's work and deep relational practice. In 2014, he founded The New Men’s Work Project, which has attracted men from around the world looking to develop as leaders in their relationships and communities. The Project is committed to the staggering goal of creating 1000 men's groups worldwide in the next ten years and has already supported trainings and groups throughout Europe and the U.S. John's clients include entrepreneurs, leading thinkers in the world of personal development and entertainment, Ted speakers and creative leaders in Hollywood. John brings a multi-faceted approach, which is both energetic and highly practical, to his workshops and experiential coaching sessions. John's embodiment-driven teaching draws from not only over 30 years experience of his own Buddhist meditative practice, but from 13 years intensive study and practice with renowned Yogic Intimacy teacher, David Deida. Drawing from Deida's revolutionary framework, as well as the deep lineages of Vajrayana, Tantra, Kundalini yoga, Taoist and Iron Shirt Qigong traditions, John seeks to create a profound experience for men and women longing to express their deepest desires with open, fierce and loving hearts. John's work has been featured on multiple podcast and publications; including Zen Habits, The Elephant Journal, Sex with Emily, Man Talks, The Good Men Project and Love TV. John's first book, The Art of Masculine Leadership, will be available June 2022. He will also be traveling throughout Europe and the U.S. leading workshops on embodied men's work, spiritual intimacy and sexual practice. Ep 394Jack Donovan - The Way Of Men
To put it bluntly, this was quite the conversation. I've found Jack Donovan's work to be both challenging, compelling, and ultimately fascinating—and it's not for the faint of heart. So naturally, I wanted him on the show. Listen in as Jack and I dig into what men of today are facing, modern culture's perspective on masculinity, balancing responsibility and freedom, the role of fathers, and of course, what really are the core tactical and mythic components of "masculinity" as a concept. Jack Donovan has been writing and speaking about masculinity, masculine philosophy and spirituality for over a decade. His foundational book, The Way of Men, has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide and has been translated into French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Polish. His most recent book, Fire in the Dark, presents a primal system of masculine roles and shows how those roles have been repeated again and again throughout the history of myth and religion. Donovan is an occasional speaker and often appears on podcasts to discuss masculinity and the challenges faced by men who want to live masculine lives in the 21st Century. In 2021, he founded CHEST Magazine with Tanner Guzy to create an alternative to mainstream men’s magazines. CHEST features interviews with courageous and important American men who are speaking up for men and standing against the forces of chaos and darkness that threaten freedom. Rules For Friends
bonusWait, huh? Rules? For friends? Yes. This was inspired by a recent talk in the Alliance, ManTalks' private online group. I think it's important to cultivate meaningful, depth-oriented friendships as men, and craft that kind of brotherhood or elevate your current friendships requires a few ground rules. This was one of those interviews that was a blast from the past and a leap into the future at the same time. See, Brian was on episode fifteen of the podcast—that's 374 episodes ago! So clearly, it was high time to have him back on the show. Ep 392Figs O'Sullivan - Breaking Free Of Repeat Conflict In Relationships
Preaching the obvious here, but romantic relationships are complex, and WHY something becomes a conflict can be incredibly hard to map—unless you're Figs O'Sullivan. This was such an enjoyable interview. Figs brings a sense of playfulness and humor to the tough stuff, and helps open up new ways of looking at conflict in relationships, why it happens, why reoccurring arguments happen, how to move through those arguments differently. Have a listen to this alongside your partner! Figs O’Sullivan was bred and emboldened in Dublin, Ireland and immigrated to the Marin County and San Francisco area in 1994. He was drawn to psychotherapy and self-exploration to better open to, move through, and heal his own emotional pain and suffering, and the last of his family to do so. Figs’ father is an experiential therapist in Ireland, his mother a social worker/probation officer, and his sister is also a psychotherapist in the Bay Area. He received a BA and MA in Economics from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland before moving to the States and working as a stockbroker, employee stock options specialist, and executive. He quit the corporate world and attended Esalen in Big Sur, immersing himself in the study of existential psychotherapies, spirituality, body-oriented/somatic modalities, and the therapeutic expressive arts such as drama and dance as ways to uncage life, access inner wisdom, and build capacities for growth and transformation. Figs went on to receive an MA in Counseling Psychology from Meridian University in Petaluma. He is also extensively studied Gestalt Awareness Practice, Emotionally Focused Therapy (a highly effective form of marriage counseling), Imago, Collaborative Couples Therapy, Experiential Psychotherapy for Couples, Gottman’s work, and more. Ep 390Tim Corcoran - The Nature Of Purpose, The Language Of Soul, And Vision Quests
Discovering a sense of purpose in life can feel frustrating and ambiguous at times, and with the mountain of books and guides out there, it's also easy to dismiss the simple act of letting purpose find you, so to speak. Tim Corcoran specializes in helping people cut through the complexity and return to nature, so I sat down with him to dig into the nature and definition of purpose, the point of things like vision quests, and how nature speaks to us. Tim also serves as co-Director of Twin Eagles Wilderness School, an organization he co-founded with his wife, Jeannine Tidwell, in Sandpoint, Idaho in 2005 dedicated to facilitating deep nature connection mentoring, cultural restoration, and inner tracking. Ask Her This
bonusAt the start of a relationship, a lot of men dive headfirst into meeting every need the other person has. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but when you combine it with cultural messaging that seems to say men shouldn't express (or even have) their own needs in a relationship, it prevents both parties from getting to really know each other. How To Handle Chronic Complainers
bonusYears ago I put out a mini-episode on this topic, and on a whim decided to put it on the YouTube channel too. Clearly, complainers were a hot-button issue, because it became one of the top-performing videos on my channel, even though it was just audio. I wanted to revisit the issue, because I don't think ghosting them, ripping into them, or enabling them are solid ways of helping them (or ourselves). Here are my thoughts; I'd love to hear yours. Ep 386Doug McKinley - The Shifting Landscape Of Leadership
Does effectively leading a company have anything in common with leading your own personal development? Of course, but what parts? This is why I brought in Doug McKinley, whose career has allowed him to bridge an individual psychological practice with coaching execs and organization heads. We cover adversity and bouncing back from it, the similarities between self-leadership and leadership within an organization, the ways men find success (or hardship) in both, some of the conflicts between what society tells about leadership and what actual effective leading looks like, and how it all. comes. back. to. discipline. Doug McKinley spent the first 15 years of his vocational life serving as a clinical psychologist and founded his own group practice in the early 90s. He was honored to be able to assist clients in the relief of unnecessary suffering and finding a healing path forward. While this was fulfilling in its own right, Doug knew that he wanted to do more; the collective insights of 30 years of investing in people have led him to the conclusion that clarity and culture are not simply “nice to have.” After meeting Pat Williams, renowned leadership coach and author, at a conference on marriage counseling, Doug transitioned from clinical psychology into serving clients as an executive leadership development coach and consultant. Part of this transition included moving on from his clinical practice and founding an executive coaching firm. In 2012, Doug created a successful consulting company with a business partner that they would run together until selling it in late 2017. McKinley currency runs DLM Pathways, an organization dedicated to guiding leaders increase their self-awareness, discover their purpose, and develop their competencies. Doug holds a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from the Adler Professional School of Psychology and a Master's Degree in counseling from Wright State University. He has earned the Master Certified Coach designation from the International Coach Federation and is a practicing member of ICF. Doug is the author of The Resiliency Quest: A Journey of Personal Leadership Development for the Thriving Physician, and the co-author of Go Positive: Lead to Engage. He’s also authored several training program manuals that focus on leadership development. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Learn more about your ad choices. The Real Reason Women Leave Nice Guys
bonusContinuing the discussion of nice guys, I wanted to think out loud a little about a question I get a lot: if women want men who are more open, more vulnerable, more reliable, more caring, why is it they still reject men who are those things? It's a complicated subject, and worth thinking about. Did you enjoy the podcast? If so, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser. Ep 385Angus Fletcher - Change Your Story, Change Your Life
Forgive me while I geek out for the rest of the week about this fantastic conversation! After reading Angus' book Wonderworks: Literary Invention and the Science of Stories, I knew I had to get him on the show. Story, myth, and narrative are incredible tools for change, and knowing how they affect us down to the neurological level is Angus' specialty. Listen in for... -How narrative shifts not just our perspective, but our entire life.-How literature and apology are two of the oldest, most powerful human inventions.-A quick look at why AI will never surpass human intelligence-How we're losing narrative diversity—and why that's leading to polarization.-The function of anger. Angus Fletcher is a professor of story science at Ohio State's Project Narrative, the world's leading academic think-tank for the study of stories. He has dual degrees in neuroscience and literature, received his Ph.D. specializing in Shakespeare from Yale, taught Shakespeare at Stanford, and has published two books and dozens of peer-reviewed academic articles on the scientific workings of novels, poetry, film, and theatre. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He has done story-consulting for projects for Sony, Disney, the BBC, Amazon, PBS, and Universal, and is the author/presenter of the Audible/Great Courses Guide to Screenwriting. Break Free From Nice Guy Syndrome
bonusI've worked with men for almost a decade now, am good friends with Dr. Robert Glover, and we've both witnessed the evolution of Nice Guys over the years. I won't lie to you and say breaking free from being the stereotypical "nice guy" is easy—in fact, it's more difficult than most people imagine. But there are a few fundamental things to keep in mind that will make it happen. Did you enjoy the podcast? If so, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser. ESex is proof that things can be simple and complex as the same time. Men are no exception, and it's an unhelpful stereotype male sexuality is the same as a light switch: on and off. Three Things Every Man Should Do
bonusI don’t always advocate for things men “should” or “must” do, but when I do… It’s taken years of working on myself, working with mentors, and working with other men to really settle on these three things, but I’ve come to cherish them and what they’ve brought me. I’ve also seen what they’ve brought other men, from friends to coworkers to clients of my own. Long story short: they’ll do you good. Did you enjoy the podcast?
