Ep 392Figs O'Sullivan - Breaking Free Of Repeat Conflict In Relationships
Preaching the obvious here, but romantic relationships are complex, and WHY something becomes a conflict can be incredibly hard to map—unless you're Figs O'Sullivan. This was such an enjoyable interview. Figs brings a sense of playfulness and humor to the tough stuff, and helps open up new ways of looking at conflict in relationships, why it happens, why reoccurring arguments happen, how to move through those arguments differently. Have a listen to this alongside your partner! Figs O’Sullivan was bred and emboldened in Dublin, Ireland and immigrated to the Marin County and San Francisco area in 1994. He was drawn to psychotherapy and self-exploration to better open to, move through, and heal his own emotional pain and suffering, and the last of his family to do so. Figs’ father is an experiential therapist in Ireland, his mother a social worker/probation officer, and his sister is also a psychotherapist in the Bay Area. He received a BA and MA in Economics from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland before moving to the States and working as a stockbroker, employee stock options specialist, and executive. He quit the corporate world and attended Esalen in Big Sur, immersing himself in the study of existential psychotherapies, spirituality, body-oriented/somatic modalities, and the therapeutic expressive arts such as drama and dance as ways to uncage life, access inner wisdom, and build capacities for growth and transformation. Figs went on to receive an MA in Counseling Psychology from Meridian University in Petaluma. He is also extensively studied Gestalt Awareness Practice, Emotionally Focused Therapy (a highly effective form of marriage counseling), Imago, Collaborative Couples Therapy, Experiential Psychotherapy for Couples, Gottman’s work, and more. Ep 390Tim Corcoran - The Nature Of Purpose, The Language Of Soul, And Vision Quests
Discovering a sense of purpose in life can feel frustrating and ambiguous at times, and with the mountain of books and guides out there, it's also easy to dismiss the simple act of letting purpose find you, so to speak. Tim Corcoran specializes in helping people cut through the complexity and return to nature, so I sat down with him to dig into the nature and definition of purpose, the point of things like vision quests, and how nature speaks to us. Tim Corcoran is the founder of Purpose Mountain, where he serves as a certified Nature-Based Purpose Guide to support people who hear the call from wild nature to discover their purpose, those with a burning desire to live their vision and a willingness to work with resistance and fears through the Ecology of Self and Voice Dialogue. Tim also serves as co-Director of Twin Eagles Wilderness School, an organization he co-founded with his wife, Jeannine Tidwell, in Sandpoint, Idaho in 2005 dedicated to facilitating deep nature connection mentoring, cultural restoration, and inner tracking. Tim is a leader of men’s groups and holistic rites of passage for males, guiding and initiating men and boys into the new paradigm of the mature masculine. Since 1999, Tim has dedicated his life towards consciously furthering this vision of living in balance with the Earth, community, family, self, spirit, and soul. Healing the cultural rift between the mainstream and indigenous cultures, transformational consciousness work, the spiritual journey, ancestral work, deep nature connection, family and holistic health are all deep commitments in his life. Tim is a heart-centered father of two brilliant boys and husband to a magnificent wife and lives in pristine Sandpoint, Idaho. Ask Her This
bonusAt the start of a relationship, a lot of men dive headfirst into meeting every need the other person has. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but when you combine it with cultural messaging that seems to say men shouldn't express (or even have) their own needs in a relationship, it prevents both parties from getting to really know each other. So here's one way to break through that! Did you enjoy the podcast? If so, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser. How To Handle Chronic Complainers
bonusYears ago I put out a mini-episode on this topic, and on a whim decided to put it on the YouTube channel too. Clearly, complainers were a hot-button issue, because it became one of the top-performing videos on my channel, even though it was just audio. I wanted to revisit the issue, because I don't think ghosting them, ripping into them, or enabling them are solid ways of helping them (or ourselves). Here are my thoughts; I'd love to hear yours. Do Women Really Want Vulnerable Men?
bonusComplexity and relationships go together like coffee and Sunday morning, and after working with hundreds of couples I've noticed some common threads that deserve a better look, like "vulnerability". How To Lead In Your Relationship
bonusSimple idea, but not easy to execute. Far too often, we mistake being a control freak for leadership, and/or reactivity with decisiveness. Ep 386Doug McKinley - The Shifting Landscape Of Leadership
Does effectively leading a company have anything in common with leading your own personal development? Of course, but what parts? This is why I brought in Doug McKinley, whose career has allowed him to bridge an individual psychological practice with coaching execs and organization heads. We cover adversity and bouncing back from it, the similarities between self-leadership and leadership within an organization, the ways men find success (or hardship) in both, some of the conflicts between what society tells about leadership and what actual effective leading looks like, and how it all. comes. back. to. discipline. Doug McKinley spent the first 15 years of his vocational life serving as a clinical psychologist and founded his own group practice in the early 90s. He was honored to be able to assist clients in the relief of unnecessary suffering and finding a healing path forward. While this was fulfilling in its own right, Doug knew that he wanted to do more; the collective insights of 30 years of investing in people have led him to the conclusion that clarity and culture are not simply “nice to have.” After meeting Pat Williams, renowned leadership coach and author, at a conference on marriage counseling, Doug transitioned from clinical psychology into serving clients as an executive leadership development coach and consultant. Part of this transition included moving on from his clinical practice and founding an executive coaching firm. In 2012, Doug created a successful consulting company with a business partner that they would run together until selling it in late 2017. McKinley currency runs DLM Pathways, an organization dedicated to guiding leaders increase their self-awareness, discover their purpose, and develop their competencies. Doug holds a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from the Adler Professional School of Psychology and a Master's Degree in counseling from Wright State University. He has earned the Master Certified Coach designation from the International Coach Federation and is a practicing member of ICF. Doug is the author of The Resiliency Quest: A Journey of Personal Leadership Development for the Thriving Physician, and the co-author of Go Positive: Lead to Engage. He’s also authored several training program manuals that focus on leadership development. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Learn more about your ad choices. The Real Reason Women Leave Nice Guys
bonusContinuing the discussion of nice guys, I wanted to think out loud a little about a question I get a lot: if women want men who are more open, more vulnerable, more reliable, more caring, why is it they still reject men who are those things? It's a complicated subject, and worth thinking about. Did you enjoy the podcast? If so, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser. Ep 385Angus Fletcher - Change Your Story, Change Your Life
Forgive me while I geek out for the rest of the week about this fantastic conversation! After reading Angus' book Wonderworks: Literary Invention and the Science of Stories, I knew I had to get him on the show. Story, myth, and narrative are incredible tools for change, and knowing how they affect us down to the neurological level is Angus' specialty. Listen in for... -How narrative shifts not just our perspective, but our entire life.-How literature and apology are two of the oldest, most powerful human inventions.-A quick look at why AI will never surpass human intelligence-How we're losing narrative diversity—and why that's leading to polarization.-The function of anger. Angus Fletcher is a professor of story science at Ohio State's Project Narrative, the world's leading academic think-tank for the study of stories. He has dual degrees in neuroscience and literature, received his Ph.D. specializing in Shakespeare from Yale, taught Shakespeare at Stanford, and has published two books and dozens of peer-reviewed academic articles on the scientific workings of novels, poetry, film, and theatre. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He has done story-consulting for projects for Sony, Disney, the BBC, Amazon, PBS, and Universal, and is the author/presenter of the Audible/Great Courses Guide to Screenwriting. Break Free From Nice Guy Syndrome
bonusI've worked with men for almost a decade now, am good friends with Dr. Robert Glover, and we've both witnessed the evolution of Nice Guys over the years. I won't lie to you and say breaking free from being the stereotypical "nice guy" is easy—in fact, it's more difficult than most people imagine. Three Things Every Man Should Do
bonusI don’t always advocate for things men “should” or “must” do, but when I do… It’s taken years of working on myself, working with mentors, and working with other men to really settle on these three things, but I’ve come to cherish them and what they’ve brought me. I’ve also seen what they’ve brought other men, from friends to coworkers to clients of my own. Long story short: they’ll do you good. Did you enjoy the podcast? Ep 383Experts On: Power, Trauma, Failure, Myth, And Addiction
I've had the privilege of interviewing some incredibly wise, compelling, and inspiring people. This is a sampling of not just our most downloaded episodes of this past year, but also some of our more profound moments and profound guests: author Robert Greene, men's work expert Jason Wilson, psychiatrist Dr. Anna Lembke, and mythologist Dr. Martin Shaw. There is also some never-before-released material from spiritual activist Stephen Jenkinson, whose work I deeply admire. Francis Bacon said, "Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested". I humbly suggest the same rule applies to podcast episodes. How To Cultivate Direction In Your Life
bonusI've found in my work that cultivating direction is one of the most simple-yet-complex things in a man's life. Without it, most men fall into hopelessness, despair, anger, or worse, a kind of stagnant acceptance that's ultimately harmful to themselves and the world around them. So this week, some straightforward steps in how to first find direction, and then how to cultivate it. As always, let me know what you think! DM me on Instagram @mantalks. Did you enjoy the podcast? Ep 381Michaela Boehm - Grief, Growth, And Staying Grounded
I'm in the thick of editing my book, so I wanted to reconnect with one of our most popular episodes ever. This was such a good conversation! Michaela and I covered a TON of ground; everything from grief's role in relationships to anal sex (yup). This was originally recorded around May 2020, so it's also an interesting sort of time capsule. Michaela Boehm teaches and counsels internationally as an expert in intimacy and sexuality. Born and raised in Austria, Michaela combines her background in psychology and extensive clinical experience with her in-depth training in the yogic arts as a classical Kashmiri Tantric lineage holder into a unique offering of experiential learning. She is passionate about teaching skills that enhance deep intimacy, lasting attraction, and give each participant the tools for full embodiment and capacity. Michaela also traveled and co-taught with David Deida for 13 years. Michaela teaches women’s workshops, intimacy intensives for men and women and offers mentorships and relationship counseling. She lives and teaches on a small organic farm in Ojai, California where her land and animals inspire her clients to reconnect intimately with themselves and others. 7 Skills Every Man Should Master
bonusYou're damn right it's a clickbait title! And for good reason. I put this list together after years of working with men, observing what most of them struggle with, and where their greatest potential lies. However, it's also influenced by what we're going through socially and politically. Listen in, and if it resonates with you, DM me. Let me know what skill you're working on! Or if you think I missed an important one, tell me that too. Would love to hear your thoughts. Did you enjoy the podcast? If so, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser. Ep 380Daniel Kwak - The Economy And Inflation: WTF?
I started off not really knowing much about money, nor did I have any real opinion about it. I made it, I spent it, and that was that. But recently I've taken a much deeper interest, and tried to educate myself about economics in general, especially with all the uncertainty brewing around global markets, supply chains, and the rest. Join me and Daniel Kwak this week to get a primer. Daniel Kwak came to the US in 1999 to Chicago, IL. The son of an immigrant pastor, Daniel comes from a background of financial struggle and grew up having to break through language and cultural barriers constantly. In their early 20s, Sam and his brother Daniel began their real estate investing career, following the sale of their first business, a mobile DJ outfit they started in 2012. After a few years of hard work, they found a financial breakthrough in 2017 going from 0 to 75+ rental units in 1 year. Both Daniel and his brother now travel and consult other entrepreneurs in real estate investment in person as well as on their YouTube channel. The 14-Day No Challenge
bonusI created this challenge a while back, and the traction it got was surprising! So after several requests to revisit it, here we are. The No Challenge is a solid way to develop greater confidence and self-sufficiency, as well as clear out some of those nice guy (or nice girl) behaviors you may be having trouble with. Like most challenges and prompts I offer to listeners, clients, and Alliance members, it's straightforward, but not necessarily simple. Listen in. Did you enjoy the podcast? Ep 379Owen Marcus - What Emotional Intelligence Is, And Why Men Need It
In modern masculine culture, there can be a lot of pressure to shut down, suppress, or numb out emotions. But just like everything else we can experience, there's tremendous amounts of information in what we're feeling. This is why I'm such a big advocate for somatic practices—really feeling in your body what's going on—and cultivating emotional intelligence. And it's why I sat with EVRYMAN co-founder Owen Marcus; he's an expert on this subject. For more than twenty-five years, Owen Marcus has worked with men’s groups to develop programs that give them the tools and teach them the skills to be successful men, celebrate their strengths, and live their lives fully and with joy. As co-founder of EVRYMAN, he and his support men worldwide. As the New York Times describes it: “CrossFit for emotions.” Owen Marcus overcame challenges such as Asperger’s Syndrome and Dyslexia to pursue his passion of helping others find their out-of-the-box solutions. However, it wasn’t until much later that he understood that in being free to be his own man, he was able to create and fulfill a life he designed. Along the way, he met many incredible men – men who struggled to create the lives they wanted. Owen observed the patterns in his corporate management and Mindfulness Stress Reduction seminars and then began working with groups of men to give them something new: how to be their own man. How To Handle Being Rejected By A Woman
bonusI get asked about this a lot, in various ways: how do I deal with rejection? What do I say (and how do I say it) when she says no? I'm worried about getting rejected, what do I do? Rejection can suck, but it doesn't have to shatter your sense of your own value. In fact, it can help you both recognize and build your worth. Listen in this week for how that works, some actions to take, and questions you can ask yourself in the face of rejection. Did you enjoy the podcast? Honored as always to speak with an old friend of mine, Ben Goresky. As a fellow coach of men, we wanted to take an episode to give each other some thoughts on what we're seeing out there in the world of men's work: how do we better ourselves in the current global situation? Five Building Blocks To Confidence
bonusConfidence. We all want more of it, even though we consume loads of content on it. So does it have to be something so hard to achieve consistently? I don't think so. Ep 377Rabbi Manis Friedman - The Nature Of Intimacy
Last week, Zen. This week, a unique perspective on intimacy, relationships, and marriage from Rabbi Manis Friedman. I've been wanting to hear differing ideas from differing traditions on what it means to really cultivate an intimate relationship, and Rabbi Friedman had some interesting things to say! We cover loving someone versus loving things about them, what it really means to marry someone—from a more mystical frame of mind, how a "performance" mindset around sex destroys intimacy, and a lot more. Rabbi Manis Friedman is a world-renowned author, counselor, lecturer, and philosopher. He combines ancient Torah wisdom with modern wit to captivate audiences around the world. He hosts his own critically acclaimed cable television series, Torah Forum with Manis Friedman, syndicated throughout North America and is known as “Youtube’s Most Popular Rabbi”. Rabbi Friedman’s first book, Doesn’t Anyone Blush Anymore? was widely praised by the media. He has appeared on CNN, A&E Reviews, PBS, and BBC Worldwide, and has been the subject of articles in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Seventeen, Guideposts, Insight, Publisher’s Weekly, and others. The book is currently in its fourth printing. His latest book, The Joy of Intimacy is empowering thousands of couples to replace their loneliness and unfulfilled expectations with a deeply soulful and satisfying relationship. In his private practice, Rabbi Friedman has helped thousands of couples and individuals achieve fulfilling, balanced relationships, through in-person meetings or remote video consultations. Rabbi Friedman is also a noted Biblical scholar, recognized for his grasp of Jewish mysticism. In 1971, he founded Bais Chana Institute of Jewish Studies in Minnesota, the world’s first yeshiva exclusively for women, where he continues to serve as dean. From 1984 to 1990, he served as a simultaneous translator for the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s televised talks. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1946, Rabbi Friedman immigrated with his family to the United States in 1950. He received his rabbinic ordination from the Rabbinical College of Canada in 1969 and is a professionally ranked member of the National Speakers Association. His speaking tours take him to every part of this country as well as Israel, England, The Netherlands, South Africa, Australia, Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, Canada, and Hong Kong. Rabbi Friedman is now using the latest technology to spread morality to a wider audience throughout the world through his books, videos and personal meetings via the launch of itsgoodtoknow.org. He has made it his mission to reach every one of the billion people on Youtube in order to help them improve their relationships and deepen their connection with G-d. The Key To Navigating Crisis
bonusUnderstatement of the decade: there's a lot going on. I wanted to dig a little into how a man can navigate crisis, and one of the most important components to this: community. The simple reality is this: if you as an individual aren’t meant to process the events in your own community by yourself, there's no possible way you can process everything on earth by yourself. We’re built to thrive in a shared network of understanding so that navigating a crisis doesn't crush YOU, it strengthens US. Did you enjoy the podcast? Ep 376Henry Shukman - Zen Awakening: It's Not What You Think
You hear it all the time: enlightenment, awakening, expansion, liberation. Yadda yadda yadda. But...what is it really? Is it even possible to describe? This week, I sit with acclaimed Zen teacher and poet Henry Shukman to try and get the actual Zen take on things. We dig into his own spiritual journey, how to meditate in the Zen way, and how chasing after something can sometimes prevent you from ever getting it. Henry Shukman is a mindfulness teacher and the spiritual Director of Mountain Cloud Zen Center. He has been trained by Zen several teachers, particularly the roshis Joan Rieck, John Gaynor, Ruben Habito, and Yamada Ryoun Roshi, as well as by teachers and mentors in other traditions. Henry has an MA from Cambridge and an MLitt from St. Andrews, and has written several award-winning books of poetry and fiction. He currently guides a wide range of students from all walks of life. He received dharma transmission (inka shomei) from Yamada Ryoun Roshi, the abbot of Sanbo Zen, and is a Zen Master of the Sanbo Zen lineage of Kamakura, Japan. Henry's struggles as a youth, combined with a spontaneous awakening experience at age 19, paved the way for Henry to develop a well-rounded approach to spirituality and meditation, under the guidance of his teachers – one that includes both compassionate concern for the sufferings of the world and the great liberative power of awakening as its foundations. Ep 373Dr. Shy Krug - Navigating A Healthy Sex Life
EThis was such a good conversation! Dr. Krug has to be one of the most engaged and informative guys I've had on when it comes to sexual health. We cover the mind's role in healthy sex, balancing what you can and can't control in your sexual health, the surprisingly critical role of uncertainty and anxiety in sex, the physiology of erections and orgasm, how porn addiction works, the list goes on. Dr. Shy Krug is a Clinical Psychologist and AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He specializes in sex therapy and sexual health in addition to sexual addiction. He is also trained in Gottman’s Method of Couples Counseling, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE). When working with a client who has a history of trauma, he also discusses the challenges of trauma-focused work and lets them know that it is common to feel more distress in the beginning of treatment to ensure they are ready to start talking about their traumatic experience(s). Ep 372Dr. Carl Erik Fisher - The Complex History Of Addiction
It goes without saying that the more informed you are on the nature of addiction, the easier it is to see and break the patterns that trap you or the people you care about—addiction can be a LOT more subtle and nuanced than you think. So this week, I asked Dr. Carl Erik Fisher to dig into his new book, The Urge: Our History Of Addiction. It's a profoundly empathetic, personal, and intelligent book, and if you like this episode you'll want to check it out. We cover how addiction was perceived by ancient cultures and philosophers, how societies and communities have responded from Ancient Grecians to Native Americans, why community plays a huge role, the difficulty of boundaries and interventions, and a lot more. Carl Erik Fisher is an addiction physician and bioethicist. He is an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University, where he works in the Division of Law, Ethics, and Psychiatry. He also maintains a private psychiatry practice focusing on complementary and integrative approaches to treating addiction. bonusWe all crave meaning, purpose, and feeling like we're needed. It's deeply important for anyone's mental health. But for a significant number of men, it simply isn't happening. There are all sorts of reasons for this, and there's no easy answer, but it's something that genuinely worries me. This week, I'm thinking out loud about what's going on for younger men and what they can do to find that purpose and meaning for themselves. Did you enjoy the podcast? Ep 371Dr. Martin Shaw - The Depth And Value In Myth
EHow do I sum up this conversation? Because we could have talked for days. Dr. Shaw's work is incredibly powerful, so get ready for a very depth-oriented and intense conversation. For example, Dr. Shaw and I cover the real meaning of blessing and the importance of being defeated—not winning. The power of story and myth, comfort versus shelter, and how it all relates to how we're living now. Martin Shaw is widely regarded as one of the most exciting teachers of the mythic imagination. Author of the award-winning Mythteller trilogy (A Branch from the Lightning Tree, Snowy Tower, Scatterlings), he founded the Oral Tradition and Mythic Life courses at Stanford University, and is director of the Westcountry School of Myth in the UK. He has introduced thousands of people to mythology, and for twenty years, Shaw has been a wilderness rites of passage guide, working with at-risk youth, those who are unwell, returning veterans as well as many women and men seeking a deeper life. His translations of Gaelic poetry and folklore (with Tony Hoagland) have been published in Orion Magazine, Poetry International, and Poetry Magazine. Dr. Shaw's work has received top praise from the likes of Malidoma Somé, Stephen Jenkinson, Coleman Barks, Robert Densmore, and Robert Bly. His essay and conversation with Ai Weiwei on myth and migration was released by the Marciano Arts foundation. The Dating Crisis

The landscape men and women are facing in the world of sex and relationships is always shifting, and can leave you more than a little frustrated. So this week, I'm sharing a compelling article from David M. Buss: "The Mating Crisis Among Educated Women". There is a growing discrepancy here that deserves our full attention. S1 Ep 370Traver Boehm - Victimhood, Incels, And Modern Masculine Culture
This week isn't so much an interview. Instead, a long-ranging conversation with an old friend focused around some of the more, uh, volatile aspects of modern masculine culture. The functionality of incel ideology, redpill rhetoric, the rise of victimhood narratives on all sides. In short, we're talking about some heavy stuff. Expect an open dialogue and frank opinions. Traver Boehm knows men. How they think, what’s behind their behavior, and most importantly — their unique challenges in the modern landscape. Traver is the the founder of the UNcivilized Men’s Movement, the fastest growing men’s movement in the world. He is the author of Today I Rise, and Man UNcivilized as well as a two time TEDx speaker, men’s coach and podcaster. Every Man Needs To Develop This One Skill
bonusYes, that is a borderline clickbait title, and it's for good reason. It's easy to learn but takes years to master, and so many things in a man's life build off and are enhanced by this one crucial practice, even though it's something you're not really taught anymore in school. S1 Ep 369Dr. Anthony Balduzzi - Building Muscle, Fasting, And How The Male Body Ages
Tons of men know how their body changes, adapts, or grows throughout their teenage years and their 20s. Not so many know how the natural aging process affects things in the late 30s and onward into their 50s. Speaking as a new father myself, I've got a lot to learn about how to maintain my fitness while being a parent and heading quickly towards 40, which is why I brought back Dr. Anthony Balduzzi. Anthony's an expert at providing pragmatic, actionable advice for men of all stripes and fitness levels. S1 Ep 368Initiation: What Makes You A Man?
Why do men of all kinds say (or do) the most insane things for validation? Why do so many men abuse their power? Why are there so few decent male role models? My guess is a lack of initiation. But what is "initiation"? How does it work? This week, a deep dive into the what, how, why, and consequences of initiation for men. Did you enjoy the podcast? Are You A Domesticated Man?
bonusComing to you from the comfort of my car, some thoughts on how current cultural trends push men away from what actually matters to them and towards the means and ends of others. It's imperative that each of us takes time to notice the things, thoughts, and practices we're attached to that maybe aren't serving us anymore. Did you enjoy the podcast? S1 Ep 367Lara Aknin - The Science Of Happiness
It's more important than ever to ground healing work with expertise, careful research, and study. Otherwise, it's basically just cheerleading. This is why I brought on one of Canada's best social psychologists, Lara Aknin. Lara's work centers on not just what makes people happy, but what keeps them happy: gratitude, reminding yourself and others of shared connections and community, and more. Obviously, the pandemic shut out a lot of ways we cultivate connection and community—at least physically. So I wanted Lara to share some scientific grounding on how covid has affected anxiety and depression rates, stress levels, and mental resiliency in general. Lara Beth Aknin is a Canadian social psychologist. She is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Simon Fraser University and a Distinguished University Professor. After earning her Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Aknin joined the faculty of psychology at Simon Fraser University in 2012. That year, she published Giving Leads to Happiness in Young Children with J. Kiley Hamlin and Elizabeth Dunn, which supported the idea that humans may have evolved to find giving rewarding. In 2014, Lara and her colleagues Michael Norton and Elizabeth Dunn co-published a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and CIHR funded review of whether spending money had a positive effect on people's happiness. The following year, her contributions to the field of social psychology earned her the President’s New Researcher Award from the Canadian Psychological Association and a fellowship at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. By 2019, she received an SSHRC grant for her project, Can Repeated and Reflective Giving Nurture Canada's Next Generation of Philanthropists? She was also honored by the university for her research and contributions to social Psychology with the title of Distinguished SFU Professor. During the pandemic, she has served as Chair of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Task Force of the Lancet COVID-19 Commission. She also serves as an associate editor of the World Happiness Report.
