James is a deeply experienced wisdom holder and expert facilitator whose leadership has been a critical force driving the growth and success of programs at both Folsom State Prison and San Quentin State Prison. S1 Ep 353Francis Weller - Initiation (And Society Without It)

In this episode, Francis and I discuss the role of community in processing grief, the cult of specialness, our addiction to progress, using beauty and ritual to stay mentally healthy, and how obsession with individualism has crippled our ability to feel like we belong. That’s just the tip of the iceberg with a man like Francis, and it’s a great honor to hear him speak with such depth and clarity on these complex subjects. Francis Weller, MFT, is a psychotherapist, writer, and soul activist. He is a master of synthesizing diverse streams of thought from psychology, anthropology, mythology, alchemy, indigenous cultures, and poetic traditions. Author of The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief, The Threshold Between Loss and Revelation, (with Rashani Réa), and In the Absence of the Ordinary: Essays in a Time of Uncertainty, he has introduced the healing work of ritual to thousands of people. He founded and directs WisdomBridge, an organization that offers educational programs that seek to integrate the wisdom from indigenous cultures with the insights and knowledge gathered from western poetic, psychological, and spiritual traditions. As a gifted therapist and teacher, Francis has been described as a jazz artist, improvising and moving fluidly in and out of deep emotional territories with groups and individuals, bringing imagination and attention to places often held with judgment and shame. Francis received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay and two Master’s Degrees from John F. Kennedy University in Clinical Psychology and Transpersonal Psychology. His writings have appeared in anthologies and journals exploring the confluence between psyche, nature, and culture. His work was featured in The Sun magazine (October 2015) the Utne Reader (Fall 2016) and the Kosmos Journal. (Winter 20201) He is a frequent presenter and keynote speaker at conferences, bringing insight, poetry and a breath of humor to his talks. Francis is currently on staff at Commonweal Cancer Help Program, co-leading their week-long retreats with Michael Lerner. He has taught at Sonoma State University, the Sophia Center in Oakland, and has been the featured teacher at the Minnesota Men's Conference. He is currently completing his third book, A Trail on the Ground: The Geography of Soul. He has created three CD sets, two focusing on healing shame and one on “Restoring the Soul of the World.” His latest offerings are a 10-session audio series on "Living a Soulful Life and Why It Matters." and "The Alchemy of Initiation: Soul Work and the Art of Ripening." S1 Ep 350Dr. Kenneth Adams - Man And His Mother

Creating a healthy relationship as an adult requires a fine balance of intimacy and sovereignty. This can be really tough for men who grew up with maternal enmeshment issues—they've got to untangle a maladaptive relationship with their mother. Dr. Kenneth Adams is an expert on helping people do exactly this. We dive deep into what enmeshment looks like, the kinds of confusion and chaos it creates in relationships, and how to break free. Dr. Kenneth M. Adams began his professional career in 1981 treating children, adolescents, and their families. In 1985 he began private practice with the Children of Alcoholic Parents program, an outpatient program for the treatment of adults who had grown up in alcoholic families. It was there that he began to notice that many of these clients had addictions and enmeshment issues, two of his primary specialties today. He wrote his first professional article in 1987 on covert incest and sex addiction in alcoholic families and has since written three books and numerous peer-reviewed articles. He is a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), a CSAT supervisor, and CSAT training facilitator as well as an EMDR practitioner. Ep 348Jason Wilson - Breaking Free From Emotional Incarceration

This is a long-awaited reunion! Jason has been a guiding light and inspiration to multitudes of boys and men, and it's an honor to reconnect with him. We talk about the struggles men face in silence, the culture of "grind", intergenerational trauma, and the need for men to develop a comprehensive masculinity. Jason Wilson is the founder and CEO of the Yunion (pronounced union), a non-profit youth development organization in Detroit Michigan. Since 2003, the Yunion has effectively reached more than 15,000 youth and young adults through innovative prevention programming, trauma-informed care, parental engagement, and counseling. In 2008, Mr. Wilson’s heart for fatherless and misguided black boys inspired him to create and direct the Cave of Adullam Transformational Training Academy (CATTA).As an expert in Emotional Stability Training®, Wilson’s leadership has garnered the CATTA numerous acknowledgments and awards for his work teaching males how to introspectively confront and conquer their negative emotions with composure. In 2016, one of the CATTA’s videos went viral with over 80 million views worldwide. As a result, Mr. Wilson was invited to be a guest on the Dr. Oz Show and to present the CATTA at President Obama’s ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ Showcase at the White House. Later that year, NBC’s hit TV show ‘This Is Us’ was so inspired by Wilson’s work, that they featured the CATTA’s initiation ceremony in one of their most viewed and award winning episodes. In 2018, Mr. Wilson signed with actor/producer Laurence Fishburne’s film company Cinema Gypsy to produce a documentary film on Jason’s work with the CATTA. It is scheduled to be released in 2021. Mr. Wilson has over 25 years of martial arts experience, in addition to over 16 years of training and developing young black males. S1 Ep 347Balazs Bercsényi and Kjartan Rumpsfeld - Art And Personal Transformation

The role and power of art in self-healing, initiation, and actualization is (putting it lightly) huge. To that end, I sat down with the incredibly skilled Balazs Bercsényi and his colleague-in-healing, belief coach Kjartan Rumpsfeld. We get into the two bridge art and healing in the form of ritualistic “tattoo retreats”, how Balazs and Kjartan met, the artistic process, and how to change the transactional nature of modern art. Balazs Bercsényi is a multidimensional tattoo artist from Pécs, Hungary, with a distinct, identifiable, and meticulous style. His artistic work is heavily influenced by ancestral practices and ritual, spirituality, sacred geometry, the occult, and sculpture. He leads the industry as an expert in single needle and fine line black and grey talisman tattoos, which have become his trademark signature for independent art projects. Informed by an apprenticeship and subsequent artistic residency in London, England, at the age of 20 and subsequent international artistic study, his work received true international acclaim and recognition in the world-renowned Bang Bang art studios in New York City, United States. Balazs demonstrates a continuing passion for traveling and tattooing around the world, and his constantly-evolving artistic aspirations and professional practice have expanded into the exploration of illustration and fashion design as new mediums to bridge the gap between ancient tradition and modern elegance. Kjartan Rumpsfeld is a Norway-based consultant and teacher utilizing NLP, energy work, and other modalities to people weed out limiting beliefs and experience transformation and healing in their lives, from the psychological and spiritual to the professional and social. Beginning with years of training in a Utah monastery, Kjartan is committed to helping others identify and let go of anything that might be holding them back. S1 Ep 346Robert Greene - Define Your Relationship To Power

I've been looking forward to this one for a long time. This is a wide ranging discussion on how power (and the desire for it) shapes everything we do—from how we use social media to how we shape our identities. We get into how power is used and misused, misinterpreted, and of course, why we need to define our relationship to power. Robert Greene is the author of several New York Times bestsellers, including The 48 Laws of Power, Mastery, The 33 Strategies of War, and The Laws of Human Nature. Greene grew up in Los Angeles and attended the University of California, Berkeley before finishing his degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.A. in classical studies. Greene estimates he's worked about 80 jobs, including construction worker, translator, magazine editor, and Hollywood movie writer. His first book, The 48 Laws of Power, catapulted him to fame at age 36. His works are widely praised by a diverse array of sources, from politicians and war historians to musicians, executives, and actors. S1 Ep 345Bayo Akomolafe - Change Your Story, Change The World

Easily one of my favorite conversations this year. The depth of Bayo Akomolafe's wisdom is pretty much limitless. Listen in and be blown away. Bayo and I cover a lot of ground here, digging into the importance of ritual, the role of stories in our growth and how those stories are influenced by what's around us, the "atmosphere" of trauma, the microbiome, cripestimology, and looking for (as he calls it) the cracks in human agency. Dr. Bayo Akomolafe is a globally acclaimed lecturer, speaker, and proud diaper-changer, and considers his most sacred work to be learning how to be with his daughter, his son, and his wife Ijeoma. “To learn the importance of insignificance” is the way he frames a desire to reacquaint himself with a world that is irretrievably entangled, preposterously alive, and completely partial. After losing his diplomat father to a sudden heart complication, Bayo became a reclusive teenager, seeking to get to the “heart of the matter” as a response to his painful loss. He sought to apply himself to the extremes of his social conditioning, his faith, and his eventual training as a clinical psychologist, graduating summa cum laude from Covenant University in Nigeria. Largely nurtured and trained in a world that increasingly fell short of his deepest desires for justice, Bayo’s doctoral research involved meeting with traditional healers as part of his quest to understand trauma, mental wellbeing, and healing in new ways. His deep questions and concerns for decolonized landscapes has congealed into a life devoted to exploring the nuances of a “magical” world “too promiscuous to fit neatly into our fondest notions of it.” Connect with Bayo: -Website: https://bayoakomolafe.net/ -Twitter: https://twitter.com/bayoakomolafe -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bayoakomolafeampersand/ -LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bayoakomolafe/ Did you enjoy the podcast? S1 Ep 344Sophie Zhang - Misinformation And Social Media Manipulation

Truth, whether in men’s work or politics or science, is crucial. Sophie Zhang was fired from Facebook in 2020, and her farewell memo was leaked to Buzzfeed, went viral on Reddit, and revealed (in her words) “multiple blatant attempts by foreign national governments to abuse our platform on vast scales to mislead their own citizenry, and caused international news on multiple occasions". S1 Ep 339Rupert Spira - The Nature Of Consciousness & Time

How to truly uncover lasting happiness can seem like a lofty or impossible goal. But somehow, Rupert Spira makes it seem not just possible, but as clear as glacier water. I’ve wanted him on the show for a long time now, and I’m excited to share this incredible conversation. Order in a man’s life is a tricky subject, and something many men have a tumultuous relationship with. S1 Ep 337Andrew Reiner - Better Boys, Better Men

There’s no question in my mind that boys these days are navigating some incredible challenges. More and more boys are dropping out of school and college, suicide rates among younger men appear to be spiking, and it’s critical that we as a culture—and we as men specifically—look at what we can do better. Andrew Reiner and I discuss his fantastic book, what led him to this path, and how we can begin to embody a more generative, emotionally honest masculinity for the next generation. Andrew Reiner is a professor at Towson University, where he offers the seminar “The Changing Face of Masculinity.” He has written on masculinity and men’s issues for the New York Times, Italy’s la Republica, and The Washington Post Magazine, and his work has been featured on NPR and the CBC, and in The Guardian, Men’s Health magazine, and Forbes. Beware The Male Apologist

bonus

It's my opinion that a huge part of a man's journey is being able to have real conversations about the struggles we have with maleness. Some men respond by disowning as much of their maleness as they can, but leave a lot of disconnection, pain, and anger unhealed. The end result is a personality type that (in my opinion) does more harm than good. Did you enjoy the podcast? If so, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser. S1 Ep 336Kristin Du Mez - Understanding Militant Evangelical Christianity

E

Unless you’re living in total media blackout, you’ve got at least an awareness of the effect Christianity has on every aspect of America. What you might not know is how deep that rabbit hole goes. The brilliant history professor Kristin Du Mez does, though, so I brought her on for an exploration of evangelical Christianity, its obsession with “warrior Christ”, the contortion and cherry-picking of doctrine, and how it ties into politics and the military. Kristin Kobes Du Mez is a Professor of History and Gender Studies at Calvin University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame and her research focuses on the intersection of gender, religion, and politics. She has written for the Washington Post, NBC News, Religion News Service, Christianity Today, and The Daily Beast, and has been interviewed on NPR, CBS, and the BBC, among other outlets. Her most recent book is Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation. S1 Ep 335Ethan Nichtern - Buddhism: A Cure For A Time Of Chaos?

In a culture that seems to be fraying and coming apart at the seams, does Buddhism have any possibilities? Last week I got to chat with celebrated Buddhist teacher and mentor Ethan Nichtern, and hear a bit about Buddhist psychology, Tantric Buddhism, and how the Middle Path can help us navigate not just our own minds but the world around us. I really appreciated Ethan's expertise; he effortlessly explains complex Buddhist ideas (and Western misconceptions). Dig in, friends. Ethan Nichtern is, as Sally Vogler of Vogue put it, “a supercool, deeply kind brainiac—imagine a very chilled-out blend of Pauls Auster and Rudd—who is also to-the-cushion born. A Buddhist teacher for over 19 years, Ethan has taught meditation and Buddhist psychology classes and workshops around New York City, North America, and Europe, along with working with students privately. He has primarily studied in the Shambhala and other Tibetan traditions, but has also studied Theravadan and Soto Zen Buddhism. He is also an avid yoga practitioner. He served as Shastri, or Senior Teacher-In-Residence, for the Shambhala Meditation Center of New York, from 2010-2018. He was formerly on the part-time faculty at Eugene Lang College at New School University and has lectured at Brown, Wesleyan, Yale, NYU, FIT, Antioch, and other universities, and as well as at many other meditation/yoga centers and conferences around the country and world. He is the author of the acclaimed book The Road Home: A Contemporary Exploration of the Buddhist Path. His most recent book, The Dharma of The Princess Bride: What The Coolest Fairy Tale of Our Time Can Teach Us About Buddhism and Relationships was in 2017. He is also the author of One City: A Declaration of Interdependence and the Novella/poetry collection, Your Emoticons Won’t Save You. Reveal and Recognize Your Shadow

bonus

This week's mini-episode is part 3 of 4 for Mental Health Awareness Month. A look at something we all carry: a shadow. The amalgamation of everything we avoid, deny, or disown about ourselves. Despite the fact that it can be, uh, highly confronting, recognizing and revealing your shadow is (in my opinion) one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. Did you enjoy the podcast? S1 Ep 334Dr. Zach Bush - A Biological Understanding Of Our Troubled Times

Agriculture. Capitalism. Controversy. Biology. Viruses. This is a heavy one, my friends, and requires a bit of a preface on the cultural risks of meme-ifying the “other side”, which you’ll hear. I really hope you listen, but more than that, I hope you begin engaging in dialogue. I’ve wanted Zach on the show for a while now, and have been following his work with interest, and I’d be happy to hear your take. Zach Bush MD is a physician specializing in internal medicine, endocrinology, and hospice care. He is an internationally recognized educator and thought leader on the microbiome as it relates to health, disease, and food systems. Dr. Zach founded *Seraphic Group and the nonprofit Farmer’s Footprint to develop root-cause solutions for human and ecological health. His passion for education reaches across many disciplines, including topics such as the role of soil and water ecosystems in human genomics, immunity, and gut/brain health. His education has highlighted the need for a radical departure from chemical farming and pharmacy, and his ongoing efforts are providing a path for consumers, farmers, and mega-industries to work together for a healthy future for people and the planet. The first few months of having a child turn your world upside down. Full stop. This week, I had my incredible wife Vienna on the show to cover all the angles of our recent entry into parenting—my experience, her experience, our experiences of each other. Our joys, concerns, projections, and all the other things we had to navigate surrounding (as Stephen Jenkinson puts it) becoming “parent-lings”. Full disclosure: This. Is. Real. Talk. Rigorous Self-Acceptance and Compassion

bonus

It’s Mental Health Awareness Month, so I’m dedicating this month’s mini-episodes to that topic. The last year has undoubtedly left a mark on the hearts and minds of uncountable millions. I feel those of us with the means and ability have a responsibility to do what they can to create what they can to help. Put another way, the end-stage of the Hero’s Journey is to bring the treasures wrestled from dragons back to the village. So this month, each mini-episode will dive into something that has radically shifted my own mental health in a positive direction. This week, developing the self-acceptance and compassion necessary to combat the Inner Critic. We’re all in this together. This week, something unique in the ManTalks podcast's history! Shortly after my son was born, Ian MacKenzie over at The Mythic Masculine proposed we switch chairs; he'd come on the show and interview ME on my recent entry into fatherhood. We cover what it's been like so far, what I've learned, what led me and my wife to the decision of having a child, and much, much more. If you're a new parent or know someone who's "parent-curious", share this one! Ian MacKenzie is a visionary filmmaker and writer who lives on the Salish Sea with his young son. He is the founder of The Mythic Masculine podcast, which features conversations on mythology, culture, and emerging masculinities. How To Definitively Know She's The One

I’m not a huge fan of the idea of “the One” (except Neo, obviously). Nevertheless, I’m often asked, “How did you know your wife was the right one?” So let’s break it down. S1 Ep 331Kute Blackson - The Practical Approach To Surrender

About a month ago I had the honor of chatting with my friend Kute Blackson on surrender, something that often lands in “woo” territory instead of tactical, actionable advice. That's not the case with Kute, though, who merges passion, wisdom, and practicality here into a message of surrender that hits hard. Be sure to listen to this. Kute Blackson is the author of the national bestselling book You.Are.The.One, and is widely considered the next generation leader in the field of personal development by everyone ranging from Larry King, Jack Canfield, Marianne Williamson, and more. He has been featured on Larry King Now, Fox and Friends, Dr. Drew, as well, Inc magazine calls him ‘The Mindfulness Guru Billionaires Go To For Advice’. In 2019, Kute received a Walden Award in the New Thought Wisdom category that Unity honors once a year to recognize socially conscious leaders who are making the world a better place, past winners in the same category have been Oprah Winfrey and Michael Bernard Beckwith. A charismatic visionary and transformational teacher, Kute Blackson offers a fresh, bold look at spiritual awareness for a whole new generation. Born in Ghana, West Africa, Kute's multicultural upbringing as the child of a Japanese mother and a Ghanaian father has spanned four different continents. His unique lineage lay the foundation for his approach to breaking down barriers and unlocking an individual's true gifts and greatness. For over 20 years, Kute Blackson has been inspiring audiences around the world. From the first time he spoke in front of 3000 people at age 8, to speaking in over 300 venues by age 18, to helping organizations develop authentic leadership and achieve extraordinary performance over the last decade. His electrifying presentations not only offer real-world practical ideas and soul-stirring wisdom, but also ignite the heart and inspire courageous action. His mission is simple: To awaken and inspire people across the planet to access inner freedom, live authentically, and fulfill their true life’s purpose.
