Women Don't Want To Validate Your Feelings
bonusI'm a firm believer that we as men need to develop the capacity to validate and regulate ourselves, especially in the realm of emotionality. AKA: not offload emotional regulation onto our partners, girlfriends, wives, etc. In this vid, I look into where this (often) comes from, and how it leads straight to codependency. S1 Ep 339Rupert Spira - The Nature Of Consciousness & Time
How to truly uncover lasting happiness can seem like a lofty or impossible goal. But somehow, Rupert Spira makes it seem not just possible, but as clear as glacier water. I’ve wanted him on the show for a long time now, and I’m excited to share this incredible conversation. We dig into non-duality, the nature of time, the beauty of simple awareness, and what all the great spiritual traditions of the world were pointing to. Rupert Spira is an English teacher of the "direct path", a method of spiritual self-inquiry through talks and writing, and a notable English studio potter with work in public and private collections. Spira was deeply interested in the nature of reality from an early age. By age 17 he was studying meditation and practicing a classic Indian method of spiritual inquiry called Advaita Vedanta. He has studied with Dr. Francis Roles, Shantananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya in, and is steeped in the wisdom of thinkers and mystics such as P. D. Ouspensky, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Rumi, Sri Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta, and Robert Adams. In 1997, Francis Lucille trained Rupert in the Direct Path teachings of Atmanada Krishna Menon and the Tantric approach of Kashmir Shaivism, which he had received from his teacher, Jean Klein. Rupert regularly holds meetings and retreats worldwide, exploring non-dual teachings from a diverse array of sources: Advaita Vedanta, Kashmir Shaivism, Hinduism, Buddhism, mystical Christianity, Sufism, and Zen. He is the author of 8 books, including The Transparency of Things – Contemplating the Nature of Experience, The Ashes of Love, The Nature of Consciousness and The Essence of Meditation. The Key To Dating Wild Women
bonusYou ask, I answer. I've recently had a lot of questions on this topic. From women, it's something like, "Men keep telling me that I'm intimidating. I seem to date men that I walk all over. How do I navigate this?" And then from men, it's "She's intense. She's chaotic sometimes. She can be really overly direct or assertive or combative. What do I do? How do I navigate that?" Tell me what you'd add, if you disagree, or if you've got any questions! And don't forget to share this with someone you feel will benefit. Did you enjoy the podcast? Create Order In Your Relationship
bonusOrder in a man’s life is a tricky subject, and something many men have a tumultuous relationship with. The title of this episode alone will probably raise a few eyebrows, but I wanted to take an honest look at the meaning of order, because it’s through order that we can create coherence, freedom, and direction. So let’s look at why order is important for a man, and how to create generative—instead of disruptive—order in your relationship. Did you enjoy the podcast? S1 Ep 337Andrew Reiner - Better Boys, Better Men
There’s no question in my mind that boys these days are navigating some incredible challenges. More and more boys are dropping out of school and college, suicide rates among younger men appear to be spiking, and it’s critical that we as a culture—and we as men specifically—look at what we can do better. Andrew Reiner and I discuss his fantastic book, what led him to this path, and how we can begin to embody a more generative, emotionally honest masculinity for the next generation. Andrew Reiner is a professor at Towson University, where he offers the seminar “The Changing Face of Masculinity.” He has written on masculinity and men’s issues for the New York Times, Italy’s la Republica, and The Washington Post Magazine, and his work has been featured on NPR and the CBC, and in The Guardian, Men’s Health magazine, and Forbes. He speaks about masculinity regularly at schools and conferences nationally and internationally. Beware The Male Apologist
bonusIt's my opinion that a huge part of a man's journey is being able to have real conversations about the struggles we have with maleness. Some men respond by disowning as much of their maleness as they can, but leave a lot of disconnection, pain, and anger unhealed. The end result is a personality type that (in my opinion) does more harm than good. Did you enjoy the podcast? If so, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser. S1 Ep 336Kristin Du Mez - Understanding Militant Evangelical Christianity
EUnless you’re living in total media blackout, you’ve got at least an awareness of the effect Christianity has on every aspect of America. What you might not know is how deep that rabbit hole goes. The brilliant history professor Kristin Du Mez does, though, so I brought her on for an exploration of evangelical Christianity, its obsession with “warrior Christ”, the contortion and cherry-picking of doctrine, and how it ties into politics and the military. Kristin Kobes Du Mez is a Professor of History and Gender Studies at Calvin University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame and her research focuses on the intersection of gender, religion, and politics. She has written for the Washington Post, NBC News, Religion News Service, Christianity Today, and The Daily Beast, and has been interviewed on NPR, CBS, and the BBC, among other outlets. Her most recent book is Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation. S1 Ep 335Ethan Nichtern - Buddhism: A Cure For A Time Of Chaos?
In a culture that seems to be fraying and coming apart at the seams, does Buddhism have any possibilities? Last week I got to chat with celebrated Buddhist teacher and mentor Ethan Nichtern, and hear a bit about Buddhist psychology, Tantric Buddhism, and how the Middle Path can help us navigate not just our own minds but the world around us. I really appreciated Ethan's expertise; he effortlessly explains complex Buddhist ideas (and Western misconceptions). Dig in, friends. Ethan Nichtern is, as Sally Vogler of Vogue put it, “a supercool, deeply kind brainiac—imagine a very chilled-out blend of Pauls Auster and Rudd—who is also to-the-cushion born. A Buddhist teacher for over 19 years, Ethan has taught meditation and Buddhist psychology classes and workshops around New York City, North America, and Europe, along with working with students privately. He has primarily studied in the Shambhala and other Tibetan traditions, but has also studied Theravadan and Soto Zen Buddhism. He is also an avid yoga practitioner. He served as Shastri, or Senior Teacher-In-Residence, for the Shambhala Meditation Center of New York, from 2010-2018. He was formerly on the part-time faculty at Eugene Lang College at New School University and has lectured at Brown, Wesleyan, Yale, NYU, FIT, Antioch, and other universities, and as well as at many other meditation/yoga centers and conferences around the country and world. He is the author of the acclaimed book The Road Home: A Contemporary Exploration of the Buddhist Path. His most recent book, The Dharma of The Princess Bride: What The Coolest Fairy Tale of Our Time Can Teach Us About Buddhism and Relationships was in 2017. He is also the author of One City: A Declaration of Interdependence and the Novella/poetry collection, Your Emoticons Won’t Save You. Reveal and Recognize Your Shadow
bonusThis week's mini-episode is part 3 of 4 for Mental Health Awareness Month. A look at something we all carry: a shadow. The amalgamation of everything we avoid, deny, or disown about ourselves. Despite the fact that it can be, uh, highly confronting, recognizing and revealing your shadow is (in my opinion) one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. Did you enjoy the podcast? S1 Ep 334Dr. Zach Bush - A Biological Understanding Of Our Troubled Times
Agriculture. Capitalism. Controversy. Biology. Viruses. This is a heavy one, my friends, and requires a bit of a preface on the cultural risks of meme-ifying the “other side”, which you’ll hear. I really hope you listen, but more than that, I hope you begin engaging in dialogue. I’ve wanted Zach on the show for a while now, and have been following his work with interest, and I’d be happy to hear your take. Zach Bush MD is a physician specializing in internal medicine, endocrinology, and hospice care. He is an internationally recognized educator and thought leader on the microbiome as it relates to health, disease, and food systems. Dr. Zach founded *Seraphic Group and the nonprofit Farmer’s Footprint to develop root-cause solutions for human and ecological health. His passion for education reaches across many disciplines, including topics such as the role of soil and water ecosystems in human genomics, immunity, and gut/brain health. His education has highlighted the need for a radical departure from chemical farming and pharmacy, and his ongoing efforts are providing a path for consumers, farmers, and mega-industries to work together for a healthy future for people and the planet. S1 Ep 333Vienna Pharaon - How We Navigate BIG Decisions
The first few months of having a child turn your world upside down. Full stop. This week, I had my incredible wife Vienna on the show to cover all the angles of our recent entry into parenting—my experience, her experience, our experiences of each other. Our joys, concerns, projections, and all the other things we had to navigate surrounding (as Stephen Jenkinson puts it) becoming “parent-lings”. Full disclosure: This. Is. Real. Talk. Rigorous Self-Acceptance and Compassion
bonusIt’s Mental Health Awareness Month, so I’m dedicating this month’s mini-episodes to that topic. The last year has undoubtedly left a mark on the hearts and minds of uncountable millions. I feel those of us with the means and ability have a responsibility to do what they can to create what they can to help. Put another way, the end-stage of the Hero’s Journey is to bring the treasures wrestled from dragons back to the village. So this month, each mini-episode will dive into something that has radically shifted my own mental health in a positive direction. This week, developing the self-acceptance and compassion necessary to combat the Inner Critic. We’re all in this together. S1 Ep 331Kute Blackson - The Practical Approach To Surrender
About a month ago I had the honor of chatting with my friend Kute Blackson on surrender, something that often lands in “woo” territory instead of tactical, actionable advice. That's not the case with Kute, though, who merges passion, wisdom, and practicality here into a message of surrender that hits hard. Be sure to listen to this. Kute Blackson is the author of the national bestselling book You.Are.The.One, and is widely considered the next generation leader in the field of personal development by everyone ranging from Larry King, Jack Canfield, Marianne Williamson, and more. He has been featured on Larry King Now, Fox and Friends, Dr. Drew, as well, Inc magazine calls him ‘The Mindfulness Guru Billionaires Go To For Advice’. In 2019, Kute received a Walden Award in the New Thought Wisdom category that Unity honors once a year to recognize socially conscious leaders who are making the world a better place, past winners in the same category have been Oprah Winfrey and Michael Bernard Beckwith. A charismatic visionary and transformational teacher, Kute Blackson offers a fresh, bold look at spiritual awareness for a whole new generation. Born in Ghana, West Africa, Kute's multicultural upbringing as the child of a Japanese mother and a Ghanaian father has spanned four different continents. His unique lineage lay the foundation for his approach to breaking down barriers and unlocking an individual's true gifts and greatness. For over 20 years, Kute Blackson has been inspiring audiences around the world. From the first time he spoke in front of 3000 people at age 8, to speaking in over 300 venues by age 18, to helping organizations develop authentic leadership and achieve extraordinary performance over the last decade. His electrifying presentations not only offer real-world practical ideas and soul-stirring wisdom, but also ignite the heart and inspire courageous action. His mission is simple: To awaken and inspire people across the planet to access inner freedom, live authentically, and fulfill their true life’s purpose. S1 Ep 330Brian Falduto - The Bridge Between Gay & Straight Men
EIn a culture where polarization feels like it's increasing, understanding each other is a radical act. This week, Brian Falduto and I get into the fear, wounding, and shadow contained within straight men and men in the queer community, and how to create better discourse and understanding. Because while there are differences in experiential content, there's also more overlap than you might think. This was a great conversation, and I’m grateful to have had the chance to listen to Brian’s knowledge and experience. Brian Falduto is a professional actor, country music singer-songwriter, and ICF certified life coach. At the age of 11, director Richard Linklater cast Brian Falduto alongside Jack Black in the film School of Rock as Billy, a.k.a. “Fancy Pants.” He is a dual-degree graduate in Theatre Performance & Arts Administration, and proudly calls himself an alumnus of Wagner College. Brian’s discography includes a 2017 acoustic EP titled “Love One Another,” a 2018 debut studio album titled “Stage Two,” & other singular releases - most notably his recent single, “God Loves Me Too,” which went on to become a final nominee at the 2020 International Independent Music Video Awards & winner of the Fan Favorite category. In addition to garnering support from The Trevor Project, GLAAD, & other LGBTQ-affirming organizations & advocates, the song was chosen as the “Loud & Proud” feature on Apple Country's Proud Radio & also the official theme song for Beloved Arise, a non-profit organization celebrating queer youth of faith. Since re-emerging as an artist, Brian has had some amazing opportunities to share his life story openly & honestly through public speaking engagements, podcast appearances, self-authored content pieces, & media interviews; most notably his now-viral video with Now This News. In 2018, PrideLife Magazine named Brian one of the “20 most influential, outspoken, & optimistic individuals on the planet” in their 20th Anniversary #20intheir20s issue. Brian also works as a life coach serving primarily LGBTQ+ clientele. In 2020, he launched The Gay Life Coach Podcast, The Gay Men's Self-Help Book Club, & The Gay Men's Mindfulness Collective as part of his efforts to create mindful conversation & content surrounding the effects of internalized & externalized homophobia, & how one might heal from those experiences through expanded awareness & a deeper connection to oneself. Why You Can't Forgive Yourself
bonusEYesterday I put out the ask to followers on Instagram: what do you want me to talk about? Within minutes, I had multiple men bring up the topic of self-forgiveness. Questions like, “How do I forgive myself for infidelity? For lying? For a business that I ruined?” Friends, this is a big deal. I break down the reasons why we struggle to forgive ourselves, how we need to change how we look at forgiveness, and how it’s intimately tied to our sense of sovereignty. Did you enjoy the podcast? S1 Ep 329Eddie Capparucci - Porn Addiction and Healing The Inner Child
Grab your notepad for this one. I wanted to have Eddie on the show because it’s somewhat rare to view sexual addiction (porn or otherwise) through the lens of Inner Child work. How we reveal and heal the wounds of our past is how we heal our present, and Inner Child work is an incredibly powerful framework to do that in. Eddie breaks down the Inner Child with nuance and deep intelligence, and it was a pleasure to have him on. If you or someone you know struggles with an addiction to porn or sex, man it forward and share this episode! Eddie Capparucci is a licensed therapist and is certified in the treatment of sexual and pornography addiction. He and his wife, Teri, have a private practice in Marietta, Georgia, working with men struggling with sex/porn addiction, as well as their wives who are dealing with betrayal. Among his many clients, Eddie has worked with professional athletes including NFL and MLB players and television personalities. He is the administrator of the websites www.MenAgainstPorn.org and www.SexuallyPureMen.com. He also has written for the blogs XXXChurch.com, Covenant Eyes, and Kingdom Works. He serves as the clinical director for the National Decency Coalition, an organization working to help limit the access of pornography to minors while educating about the harmful impact of pornography on individuals, relationships, and society. Stop Looking For The Golden Gun
bonusWe as men have often fall into this idea that there’s one big solution—one psychological big bang—that’ll “fix” everything in our personal development journey. I call it the Golden Gun, and just like its namesake, it’s (surprise!) NOT real. Listen in to find out where the real fix is, why we need it, and why it deserves more recognition and respect. S1 Ep 328Stephen Jenkinson - What Patriarchy Really Meant, And Dying Cultural Myths
It’s difficult to really articulate the kind of man Stephen Jenkinson is. I’ve interviewed hundreds of brilliant people and studied many more, but very few approach the same level of profoundly medicinal wisdom as Jenkinson. To say I’m a fan is an understatement. Bear with the occasional rough patch of audio and listen to some challenging depth. Stephen Jenkinson, MTS, MSW is an activist, teacher, author, and farmer. He is the founder of the Orphan Wisdom School in Tramore, Canada, and the author of four books, including Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul, the award-winning book about grief, dying, and the great love of life, and Come Of Age: The Case for Elderhood in a Time of Trouble. In 2015, he created Nights of Grief & Mystery with Canadian singer-songwriter Gregory Hoskins. With a 5-piece band, they have mounted international tours and released three albums, most recently DARK ROADS and ROUGH GODS. Most recently, a four-part livestream speaking series, A Generation’s Worth, was presented in Winter 2020. Orphan Wisdom is the home of Stephen Jenkinson’s writing and teaching work. A Message To My Unborn Son
bonusThis mini-episode is a little different. As some of you might know, I became a dad just over two weeks ago. Not long before his arrival, I found myself contemplating and writing about what I was experiencing. So I wanted to share that, in the hopes that other men—fathers, sons, grandfathers, boys, adults—find their own answers to the question: what can a man say to the son he hasn't met yet? S1 Ep 327Brian Muraresku - The History of Psychedelics in Religion
Did psychedelics play a role in mystical insight, human ingenuity, and the development of Western civilization? Is there a secret religion hidden underpinning the most ancient spiritual practices of Greece, Turkey, and elsewhere? Join me and Brain Muraresku for a mind-bending look at our history as a civilization, as spiritual beings, and how psychedelics might be intertwined into it all. This was a deeply fascinating talk; sit back and enjoy! Brian C. Muraresku graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Brown University with a degree in Latin, Greek, and Sanskrit. The Problem With Personal Development
bonusWe get way too caught up in the idea that personal development is always expansion, always growth, always becoming. That, my friends, is not true. In this episode, I break down my main issue with personal development, and what we need to talk about in order to lock in actual growth. To me, personal development has just as much “unbecoming” as it does “becoming”. Did you enjoy the podcast? If so, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser. Thinking Out Loud: Jordan Peterson and the Essence of Patriarchy
bonusAlright. Let me be clear: I am not making a case for or against him. This is me trying to find deeper answers to why Peterson is such a divisive figure, as well as observing the (frankly) dire situation masculine culture is in. When I see people either hyper-pedestal someone or viciously denigrate them, that’s a solid cue to look at both the person and what they might symbolize in the psyche of their fans (and enemies). S1 Ep 325Jenny Sansouci - The Healing Power of Medicinal Mushrooms and CBD
Jenny and I dig into some of the practical applications of things like CBD and functional mushrooms (think Lion’s Mane, Chaga, Turkey Tail, and others). A healthy mind and a healthy body absolutely go hand in hand. If you’re looking to elevate your sleep, cognition, or overall wellbeing, listen to this. Side note: This was recorded some time ago, but I was surprised to find out both Amazon and Instagram have prevented Jenny from advertising her book. Jenny Sansouci is a certified health coach and creator of the wellness blog Healthy Crush, where she's been writing since 2008. She is the author of The Rebel's Apothecary: A Practical Guide to the Healing Magic of Cannabis, CBD, and Mushrooms. Weekly Training: Creating Sexual Polarity and Tension
bonusThis week, I wanted to talk about what sexual polarity is, how you can create sexual tension or sexual charge, and the logistics around that. Based on the research, the last year has really done a number on some people’s sex lives—maintaining sexual desire can obviously be tough in situations like lockdowns. S1 Ep 324Anon Guest - Overcoming Victimhood And Integrating Anger
Every part of our shadow has a lineage. From the way we manage anger to how we react when a friend betrays us. This week, I sit with an anonymous guest and help him break through the hard surface of his anger to discover where it came from; and now that he knows what's up, what to do next. S1 Ep 322Kris Coleman - On Resiliency, Awareness, and Navigating Misinformation
This was recorded in early February. I feel it's important to balance out the theoretical side of things and on-the-ground perspective, so I brought in Kris Coleman, a former CIA Officer and FBI Special Agent. We get into some practical and frank ideas around what we need to do to cultivate resiliency individually and as a community, combating misinformation (spoiler: always check your sources and avoid echo chambers), and how massively important awareness is. Kris Coleman is Founder, President, and CEO of Red Five, where he supports private families, family offices, corporations, and security teams with bespoke solutions to ensure their privacy, security, and resiliency. Before founding Red Five, Coleman served as a CIA Officer where he conducted threat and vulnerability assessments and developed programmatic approaches to counterterrorism and law enforcement for countries across the world. Coleman also served as an FBI Special Agent and a member of the FBI’s enhanced SWAT Team. Coleman holds a B.S. in Public Administration from the University of Arkansas. Weekly Training: Your Shadow & Relationships
bonusI continue to be blown away by what people are discovering in The Shadow Course, which I released recently. The questions and insights people are bringing to the table are leaving me so grateful and excited. This week, someone brought up an amazing question on how the shadow affects relationships, and I wanted to do a bit of a deep dive on it: how the shadow shows up in relationships, how it actually helps us pick partners, and how some of the relationships we enter into are the shadow made manifest. S1 Ep 321Cinema Therapy - Marvel, Archetypes, and Masculinity in Movies
What makes villians like Thanos and Killmonger so compelling? Is there a trend in how our culture looks at heroes? What's the modern idea of a hero even look like? I connected with Cinema Therapy over Zoom, and we nerd out on the intersection of psychology, film, and culture. We cover masculinity in movies and its history, what Marvel is doing right, Heath Ledger’s Joker versus Joaquin Phoenix’s, and why superheroes are so important right now. This was a fun, compelling interview. Alan and Jonathan are brilliant, funny, and genuinely wholesome people. There’s also a recipe for a mean chocolate smoothie if you listen in close. Cinema Therapy is hosted by licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright. They discuss how movies can be used to improve your life, and how to watch movies with your brain turned on. Also, there are jokes. Weekly Training: The Ultimate Guide To Coping Mechanisms
bonusThe title says it all. After getting a few questions from folks in the Shadow Course and some others on Insta, I wanted to break down coping mechanisms in multiple ways, because the concept can be extremely broad. Weekly Training: The Secret To Discipline
bonusFriends, we need to talk about discipline, but not in a clickbaity way. Discipline is way too often presented as this monolithic, punishing thing, and that’s an illusion. It’s also—especially these days—an endpoint. That’s also an illusion. Discipline is a daily practice and deepening the connection to your own self-worth and self-respect. Listen in. S1 Ep 318Makoto Fujimura - Culture, Art, Faith, and the Theology of Making
In this ep, I sit down with acclaimed, New York-based artist Makoto Fujimura. Makoto is a fascinating man: someone who's perfectly balanced the "border stalking" (his words) nature of artists with a deep and abiding faith. We talk about how to mends trauma and end cultural divides, the nature of God, and the role of artists as healers and integrators. Makoto Fujimura is a leading contemporary artist whose process-driven, refractive “slow art” has been described by David Brooks of New York Times as “a small rebellion against the quickening of time”. Robert Kushner, in the mid 90’s, spoke of Fujimura’s art this way: “The idea of forging a new kind of art, about hope, healing, redemption, refuge, while maintaining visual sophistication and intellectual integrity is a growing movement, one which finds Makoto Fujimura’s work at the vanguard.” Fujimura’s art is collected and featured widely in galleries and museums around the world, including The Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, The Huntington Library, the Tikotin Museum in Israel, Dillon Gallery and Waterfall Mansion in New York, Sato Museum in Tokyo, The Tokyo National University of Fine Arts Museum, Bentley Gallery in Arizona, Gallery Exit and Oxford House at Taikoo Place in Hong Kong, Vienna’s Belvedere Museum, and Shusaku Endo Museum in Nagasaki. He is one of the first artists to paint live on stage at New York City’s legendary Carnegie Hall as part of an ongoing collaboration with composer and percussionist, Susie Ibarra. Fujimura is also an arts advocate, writer, and speaker who is recognized worldwide as a cultural influencer. A Presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts from 2003-2009, Fujimura served as an international advocate for the arts, speaking with decision makers and advising governmental policies on the arts. His books have won numerous awards, including the Aldersgate Prize for “Silence and Beauty”. Fujimura's highly anticipated book Art+Faith: A Theology of Making (Yale Press, with foreword by N.T. Wright, 2021) has been described by poet Christian Wiman as "a real tonic for our atomized time". Weekly Training: What Is The Cost of Freedom?
bonusIt’s a simple question, but with a pretty uncomfortable answer for some of us. In this mini-ep, I look at what we actually need to do—to admit—as individuals and as a society to experience true freedom. Did you enjoy the podcast? S1 Ep 317Francis Weller - The Death of the Hero and The Importance of Mythology
It’s difficult for me to describe how much I value Francis Weller and his work, and I wanted him on because of his expertise on grief, something that is—inevitably—a part of every human life. We dig into Western culture's obsession with "the Hero", where we truly find redemption and healing, and the inherent emptiness of individualism. Heavy stuff, and incredibly powerful. This is also a part of a new series I’ve titled Living Through an Age of Crisis. Episodes in this series are dedicated to helping listeners navigate the confusion and chaos of our times. I’ll be bringing on experts in psychology, spirituality, history, propaganda, and culture to offer their insights on what the real situation is and how we can move through it. Francis Weller, MFT, is a psychotherapist, writer, and soul activist. He is a master of synthesizing diverse streams of thought from psychology, anthropology, mythology, alchemy, indigenous cultures, and poetic traditions. Author of The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief; The Threshold Between Loss and Revelation, (with Rashani Réa) and In the Absence of the Ordinary: Essays in a Time of Uncertainty, he has introduced the healing work of ritual to thousands of people. He founded and directs WisdomBridge, an organization that offers educational programs that seek to integrate the wisdom from indigenous cultures with the insights and knowledge gathered from western poetic, psychological, and spiritual traditions. As a gifted therapist and teacher, Francis has been described as a jazz artist, improvising and moving fluidly in and out of deep emotional territories with groups and individuals, bringing imagination and attention to places often held with judgment and shame. Francis received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay and two Master’s Degrees from John F. Kennedy University in Clinical Psychology and Transpersonal Psychology. His writings have appeared in anthologies and journals exploring the confluence between psyche, nature, and culture. His work was featured in The Sun magazine (October 2015) the Utne Reader (Fall 2016) and the Kosmos Journal. (Winter 20201) He is a frequent presenter and keynote speaker at conferences, bringing insight, poetry and a breath of humor to his talks. Francis is currently on staff at Commonweal Cancer Help Program, co-leading their week-long retreats with Michael Lerner. He has taught at Sonoma State University, the Sophia Center in Oakland, and has been the featured teacher at the Minnesota Men's Conference. He is currently completing his third book, A Trail on the Ground: The Geography of Soul. He has created three CD sets, two focusing on healing shame and one on “Restoring the Soul of the World.” His latest offerings are a 10-session audio series on "Living a Soulful Life and Why It Matters." and "The Alchemy of Initiation: Soul Work and the Art of Ripening." Are You Caught In Codependent Masculinity?
bonusAfter a great DM on Instagram and a heavy convo with Mike Campbell on his podcast, Everyday Legends, I wanted to riff on this idea a little more deeply. Tens of millions of men have put their masculinity into a dangerously codependent relationship with certain external institutions and narratives. Many of them do this without even questioning what they lose: the means for self-validation, self-leadership, and—this is a big one—mental and spiritual freedom. Did you enjoy the podcast? S1 Ep 316Anonymous Guest Session - Body Image, Weight, and the Father
In this episode, a previous anon guest is joining me for a second time. Our previous session was powerful, and I wanted to have him on again to look at his long time struggles with body image, weight, and the relationship his father archetype has with all of it. This is a great opportunity to get a feel for what 1-on-1 shadow work is actually like, so I encourage you to listen in. For our first session, check out the episode "Healing From Family Addiction" released November 2nd. Weekly Training: Practical Steps For Shadow Work
bonusToday I take a look at some of the initial and critical steps of shadow work. You probably know by now I’m a huge proponent of shadow work. For most of us, working on our inner darkness and negative emotions might seem. completely upside-down. So much of modern self-help ideology focus on keeping you “in the light”: feeling good no matter what and never actually dealing with the stuff that hurts and sabotages you. But the more we avoid this side of ourselves and the pain it holds, the black and denser it becomes. Did you enjoy the podcast?
