Ep 373Dr. Shy Krug - Navigating A Healthy Sex Life

E

This was such a good conversation! Dr. Krug has to be one of the most engaged and informative guys I've had on when it comes to sexual health. We cover the mind's role in healthy sex, balancing what you can and can't control in your sexual health, the surprisingly critical role of uncertainty and anxiety in sex, the physiology of erections and orgasm, how porn addiction works, the list goes on. Dr. Shy Krug is a Clinical Psychologist and AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He specializes in sex therapy and sexual health in addition to sexual addiction. He also specializes in trauma, depression, anxiety, and couples counseling. His work has also led to a deep understanding of how mental illness can impact changes in arousal or sexual function Dr. Krug mainly utilizes a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness. He is also trained in Gottman’s Method of Couples Counseling, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE). To ensure that an individual’s sexual dysfunction is not being caused by a medical issue, Dr. Krug takes a team-oriented approach and works closely with a team of medical providers. When working with a client who has a history of trauma, he also discusses the challenges of trauma-focused work and lets them know that it is common to feel more distress in the beginning of treatment to ensure they are ready to start talking about their traumatic experience(s). He has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a B.A. in psychology with a minor in biology from Yeshiva University. Ep 372Dr. Carl Erik Fisher - The Complex History Of Addiction

It goes without saying that the more informed you are on the nature of addiction, the easier it is to see and break the patterns that trap you or the people you care about—addiction can be a LOT more subtle and nuanced than you think. So this week, I asked Dr. Carl Erik Fisher to dig into his new book, The Urge: Our History Of Addiction. It's a profoundly empathetic, personal, and intelligent book, and if you like this episode you'll want to check it out. We cover how addiction was perceived by ancient cultures and philosophers, how societies and communities have responded from Ancient Grecians to Native Americans, why community plays a huge role, the difficulty of boundaries and interventions, and a lot more. Carl Erik Fisher is an addiction physician and bioethicist. He is an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University, where he works in the Division of Law, Ethics, and Psychiatry. He also maintains a private psychiatry practice focusing on complementary and integrative approaches to treating addiction. His writing has appeared in Nautilus, Slate, and Scientific American MIND, among other outlets. The Boys Are Not Alright

bonus

We all crave meaning, purpose, and feeling like we're needed. It's deeply important for anyone's mental health. But for a significant number of men, it simply isn't happening. There are all sorts of reasons for this, and there's no easy answer, but it's something that genuinely worries me. This week, I'm thinking out loud about what's going on for younger men and what they can do to find that purpose and meaning for themselves. Did you enjoy the podcast? Ep 371Dr. Martin Shaw - The Depth And Value In Myth

E

How do I sum up this conversation? Because we could have talked for days. Dr. Shaw's work is incredibly powerful, so get ready for a very depth-oriented and intense conversation. For example, Dr. Shaw and I cover the real meaning of blessing and the importance of being defeated—not winning. The power of story and myth, comfort versus shelter, and how it all relates to how we're living now. Martin Shaw is widely regarded as one of the most exciting teachers of the mythic imagination. Author of the award-winning Mythteller trilogy (A Branch from the Lightning Tree, Snowy Tower, Scatterlings), he founded the Oral Tradition and Mythic Life courses at Stanford University, and is director of the Westcountry School of Myth in the UK. He has introduced thousands of people to mythology, and for twenty years, Shaw has been a wilderness rites of passage guide, working with at-risk youth, those who are unwell, returning veterans as well as many women and men seeking a deeper life. His translations of Gaelic poetry and folklore (with Tony Hoagland) have been published in Orion Magazine, Poetry International, and Poetry Magazine. Dr. Shaw's work has received top praise from the likes of Malidoma Somé, Stephen Jenkinson, Coleman Barks, Robert Densmore, and Robert Bly. His essay and conversation with Ai Weiwei on myth and migration was released by the Marciano Arts foundation. S1 Ep 370Traver Boehm - Victimhood, Incels, And Modern Masculine Culture

This week isn't so much an interview. Instead, a long-ranging conversation with an old friend focused around some of the more, uh, volatile aspects of modern masculine culture. The functionality of incel ideology, redpill rhetoric, the rise of victimhood narratives on all sides. In short, we're talking about some heavy stuff. Expect an open dialogue and frank opinions. Traver Boehm knows men. How they think, what’s behind their behavior, and most importantly — their unique challenges in the modern landscape. Traver is the the founder of the UNcivilized Men’s Movement, the fastest growing men’s movement in the world. He is the author of Today I Rise, and Man UNcivilized as well as a two time TEDx speaker, men’s coach and podcaster. Every Man Needs To Develop This One Skill

Yes, that is a borderline clickbait title, and it's for good reason. S1 Ep 369Dr. Anthony Balduzzi - Building Muscle, Fasting, And How The Male Body Ages

Tons of men know how their body changes, adapts, or grows throughout their teenage years and their 20s. Not so many know how the natural aging process affects things in the late 30s and onward into their 50s. Speaking as a new father myself, I've got a lot to learn about how to maintain my fitness while being a parent and heading quickly towards 40, which is why I brought back Dr. Anthony Balduzzi. Anthony's an expert at providing pragmatic, actionable advice for men of all stripes and fitness levels. We covered building muscle, the effects of fasting, hormonal changes as men age, the effects of stress and working from home, insulin resistance and its effects on our brains, and just how easy it is to become very unhealthy very quickly. Dr. Anthony Balduzzi is a naturopathic doctor, national champion bodybuilder, and founder of the Fit Father Project and Fit Mother Project – online health and fitness communities aimed at empowering busy parents to get healthy, lose weight, and build muscle through practical nutrition and exercise plans. S1 Ep 368Initiation: What Makes You A Man?

Why do men of all kinds say (or do) the most insane things for validation? Why do so many men abuse their power? Why are there so few decent male role models? My guess is a lack of initiation. S1 Ep 367Lara Aknin - The Science Of Happiness

It's more important than ever to ground healing work with expertise, careful research, and study. Otherwise, it's basically just cheerleading. This is why I brought on one of Canada's best social psychologists, Lara Aknin. Lara's work centers on not just what makes people happy, but what keeps them happy: gratitude, reminding yourself and others of shared connections and community, and more. Obviously, the pandemic shut out a lot of ways we cultivate connection and community—at least physically. So I wanted Lara to share some scientific grounding on how covid has affected anxiety and depression rates, stress levels, and mental resiliency in general. Lara Beth Aknin is a Canadian social psychologist. She is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Simon Fraser University and a Distinguished University Professor. After earning her Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Aknin joined the faculty of psychology at Simon Fraser University in 2012. That year, she published Giving Leads to Happiness in Young Children with J. Kiley Hamlin and Elizabeth Dunn, which supported the idea that humans may have evolved to find giving rewarding. In 2014, Lara and her colleagues Michael Norton and Elizabeth Dunn co-published a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and CIHR funded review of whether spending money had a positive effect on people's happiness. The following year, her contributions to the field of social psychology earned her the President’s New Researcher Award from the Canadian Psychological Association and a fellowship at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. By 2019, she received an SSHRC grant for her project, Can Repeated and Reflective Giving Nurture Canada's Next Generation of Philanthropists? She was also honored by the university for her research and contributions to social Psychology with the title of Distinguished SFU Professor. During the pandemic, she has served as Chair of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Task Force of the Lancet COVID-19 Commission. She also serves as an associate editor of the World Happiness Report. What an honor (and what great timing) to have Peter Crone—the Mind Architect himself—on the show for my final conversation of 2021. This was such an engaging and enjoyable conversation! We delve into the nature of language and the subconscious, how to tackle things like anxiety, and some of the strategies Peter has used to help athletes with the same. Peter Crone is a thought leader in human potential and performance as well as an Ayurveda practitioner and the Founder/Chief Inspirer of Be Alive, Inc. Peter devotes his life to sharing deep insights, distinctions, and strategies for people to live an inspired life and thrive by awakening new levels of awareness that transcend old and limiting mental constructs. He helps reveal the subconscious narratives that drive behavior, and ultimately all results, and he uses the wisdom of Ayurveda to help people find balance through diet and lifestyle. Whilst most people go through life as prisoners of their own mind, Peter helps dissolve the mental shackles that hold us back so that we can experience true freedom and discover an entirely new experience of being human. S1 Ep 363Nick Carmody - Psychology, Politics, And Masculine Consciousness

E

I do my best to bring on guests who have taken their lived experience and transmuted it into unique expertise and insight. Happy to tell you Nick Carmody has done this in some incredible ways. We cover a ton of ground: brain injury, abuse, overcoming false narratives, the impact of fathers, what kills nuance, and the weird ways masculinity gets tangled and hijacked for political gain. Listen in! Nick Carmody’s life shifted dramatically in 2010, when he experienced two life-changing traumatic brain injuries only eight months apart. On top of ending a 12-year relationship with a narcissist. The changes in brain function, personality, and emotional processing as well as navigating the divorce and being bled out financially in courts led Nick to rock bottom and near suicide, but also gave him an intense desire to understand and confirm what he was experiencing and became Nick’s motivation to work in the psychology field. It soon became apparent to Nick that his lived experience—combined with his studied expertise—allowed for unique insight into the modern political climate, and a honed ability to help others who have endured similar trauma. He has a bachelor of arts in criminal justice from Concordia University, a Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, and a Masters of Science degree from Tiffin University in Ohio. He has a private practice based in Denver, and works with children from low-income families who have experienced trauma (many of whom are currently in foster care). Nick is in the process of writing Putting My Worst Foot Forward. Ep 359Reclaiming The Warrior (And Its Shadow)

After some great feedback from October's "Reclaiming the King" episode, I decided to re-release its companion piece about the Warrior archetype. Is the Warrior in us as men to blame for the division we see in today’s society? Yes...and no. This is a dive into the modes and shadow of the Warrior archetype and why—and this might surprise you—it’s one of the best archetypes we have. From the warrior, we can light the fires of focus, develop clean anger instead of unhealthy aggression, set boundaries instead of borders, and leverage our unique capabilities to bring about positive change inside and outside. At the end, I detail several actionable steps you can take to cultivate and reclaim the warrior. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Learn more about your ad choices. S1 Ep 358Elder Nii Gaani Aki Innini - A Return To Spirit, A Return To The Land

This was the last of four incredible conversations in a series titled The Wisdom of Elders. Elder Nii speaks his message with a simplicity that cuts through the rationalizations and justifications we all sometimes hold on to, and he does it with kindness and sincerity. I encourage you to check out the work he’s doing in Canada and globally, and listen in as we discuss the challenges all of us face, the needs of the earth beneath our feet, and role of initiation, elders, women, and men in the days to come. Elder Dr. Dave Courchene — Nii Gaani Aki Innini (Leading Earth Man) — is a respected elder and knowledge keeper of the Anishinaabe Nation who has devoted his life to sharing Indigenous knowledge, carrying a message of hope, peace, and environmental stewardship. From lighting the sacred fire at the United Nations Earth Summit in 1992, to sharing the stage with spiritual leaders including the Dalai Lama, Elder Dr. Courchene’s leadership has had a global influence. In 2002, he founded the Turtle Lodge International Centre for Indigenous Education and Wellness, a sacred lodge recognized internationally and by the Assembly of First Nations and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs as one of the most important gathering places for Indigenous peoples in Canada. Individuals from around the world gather at the Turtle Lodge to facilitate intergenerational knowledge sharing, language revitalization, youth leadership training, and environmental solutions to climate change. Courchene has built alliances with institutions, academics, and policymakers across the Canada. His work has been recognized with many prestigious honours, including the INDSPIRE National Aboriginal Achievement Award in Culture, Heritage, and Spirituality; an Honorary Doctor of Laws by the University of Winnipeg, the Volunteer Manitoba Award for Outstanding Community Leadership; the International Award of Excellence; the Aboriginal Circle of Educators Award; and the International Indigenous Leadership Award. He is a deeply respected elder, known for his ability to inspire dialogue and cross-cultural understanding between Indigenous knowledge keepers and western-trained scientists. His leadership is rooted in generosity, kindness, and a desire for peace and sustainability. S1 Ep 357Reclaiming The King

Leadership, respect, duty, structure, legacy, service, praise. All of these are embodied in the archetype of the King—the foremost (and arguably most difficult) energy to cultivate. But like everything, the King’s got a dark side we need to understand. To celebrate the re-launch of the ManTalks Shadow Course, I’ve been covering all things shadow, including the dark sides of two important archetypes to masculinity: the Warrior and the King. This episode was originally released in 2019, and it was one of my favorites to research and record. As the saying goes, "your pain has its own intelligence". This intelligence is the shadow. S1 Ep 356Stephen Jenkinson - What The F*** Happened?

E

I’ve been running ManTalks for almost a decade and I’ve met a ton of amazing people who can speak truthfully and bluntly. But no one speaks carries their truth as authentically as Stephen Jenkinson. I find a lot of what Stephen says is medicinal: you might not think it tastes great, but damn if it isn’t what you need to hear. This is a deep dive into why things are the way they are. Fear of submission, love of consumption, death-phobia, the commodification of trauma, endings, what the pandemic tried to tell us, and so much more. This is from a series I produced recently called The Wisdom of Elders, featuring experts on elderhood and culture to discuss what an “elder” actually is, where we are as a species, how we got here, and where we’re headed. Basically, what the f*** happened? Culture activist, teacher, and author, Stephen Jenkinson teaches internationally and is the creator and principal instructor of the Orphan Wisdom School, co-founded with Nathalie Roy in 2010, convening semi-annually in Ontario, and in northern Europe. He has a Masters degree in Theology from Harvard University and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Toronto. Apprenticed to a master storyteller when a young man, he has worked extensively with dying people and their families, was a program director in a major hospital, and an assistant professor in a prominent medical school. He is also a sculptor and traditional canoe builder, whose house won a Governor General’s Award for architecture. Since co-founding Nights of Grief and Mystery with Gregory Hoskins in 2015, he has toured across North America, the U.K., Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. His new book, A Generation’s Worth: Spirit Work While the Crisis Reigns, sets out to learn liveable answers. Dying and death, love and matrimony, money and soul, aging and elderhood, drawn through the eye of a pestilential needle: this is the spirit work, and that is the crisis. https://orphanwisdom.com/a-generations-worth-spirit-work-while-the-crisis-reigns He is also the author of Come of Age: The Case for Elderhood in a Time of Trouble, the award-winning Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul, Homecoming: The Haiku Sessions, How it All Could Be: A Workbook for Dying People and Those Who Love Them (2009), Angel and Executioner: Grief and the Love of Life (a live teaching from 2009), and Money and The Soul’s Desires: A Meditation. He is contributing author to Palliative Care – Core Skills and Clinical Competencies. Stephen Jenkinson is also the subject of the feature-length documentary film Griefwalker, a portrait of his work with dying people, and Lost Nation Road, a shorter documentary on the crafting of the Nights of Grief and Mystery tours. A few months ago I had the privilege of interviewing this incredible man over Zoom, and it's with a lot of thankfulness that I share that conversation with you now. James is a deeply experienced wisdom holder and expert facilitator whose leadership has been a critical force driving the growth and success of programs at both Folsom State Prison and San Quentin State Prison. S1 Ep 353Francis Weller - Initiation (And Society Without It)

In this episode, Francis and I discuss the role of community in processing grief, the cult of specialness, our addiction to progress, using beauty and ritual to stay mentally healthy, and how obsession with individualism has crippled our ability to feel like we belong. That’s just the tip of the iceberg with a man like Francis, and it’s a great honor to hear him speak with such depth and clarity on these complex subjects. Francis Weller, MFT, is a psychotherapist, writer, and soul activist. He is a master of synthesizing diverse streams of thought from psychology, anthropology, mythology, alchemy, indigenous cultures, and poetic traditions. Author of The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief, The Threshold Between Loss and Revelation, (with Rashani Réa), and In the Absence of the Ordinary: Essays in a Time of Uncertainty, he has introduced the healing work of ritual to thousands of people. He founded and directs WisdomBridge, an organization that offers educational programs that seek to integrate the wisdom from indigenous cultures with the insights and knowledge gathered from western poetic, psychological, and spiritual traditions. As a gifted therapist and teacher, Francis has been described as a jazz artist, improvising and moving fluidly in and out of deep emotional territories with groups and individuals, bringing imagination and attention to places often held with judgment and shame. Francis received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay and two Master’s Degrees from John F. Kennedy University in Clinical Psychology and Transpersonal Psychology. His writings have appeared in anthologies and journals exploring the confluence between psyche, nature, and culture. His work was featured in The Sun magazine (October 2015) the Utne Reader (Fall 2016) and the Kosmos Journal. (Winter 20201) He is a frequent presenter and keynote speaker at conferences, bringing insight, poetry and a breath of humor to his talks. Francis is currently on staff at Commonweal Cancer Help Program, co-leading their week-long retreats with Michael Lerner. He has taught at Sonoma State University, the Sophia Center in Oakland, and has been the featured teacher at the Minnesota Men's Conference. He is currently completing his third book, A Trail on the Ground: The Geography of Soul. He has created three CD sets, two focusing on healing shame and one on “Restoring the Soul of the World.” His latest offerings are a 10-session audio series on "Living a Soulful Life and Why It Matters." and "The Alchemy of Initiation: Soul Work and the Art of Ripening." bonus

One of the most popular questions I get from both men and women revolves around intimidation. Women ask me why men perceive them as intimidating, and men ask me how to handle an intimidating woman. If you want to know what to do, start by reading the title of this episode, and listen in. We’ve got a lot to talk about: the responsibilities, the challenges, and what might be underneath it all. S1 Ep 350Dr. Kenneth Adams - Man And His Mother

Creating a healthy relationship as an adult requires a fine balance of intimacy and sovereignty. This can be really tough for men who grew up with maternal enmeshment issues—they've got to untangle a maladaptive relationship with their mother. Dr. Kenneth Adams is an expert on helping people do exactly this. We dive deep into what enmeshment looks like, the kinds of confusion and chaos it creates in relationships, and how to break free. Dr. Kenneth M. Adams began his professional career in 1981 treating children, adolescents, and their families. In 1985 he began private practice with the Children of Alcoholic Parents program, an outpatient program for the treatment of adults who had grown up in alcoholic families. It was there that he began to notice that many of these clients had addictions and enmeshment issues, two of his primary specialties today. He wrote his first professional article in 1987 on covert incest and sex addiction in alcoholic families and has since written three books and numerous peer-reviewed articles. He is a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), a CSAT supervisor, and CSAT training facilitator as well as an EMDR practitioner. Ep 348Jason Wilson - Breaking Free From Emotional Incarceration

This is a long-awaited reunion! Jason has been a guiding light and inspiration to multitudes of boys and men, and it's an honor to reconnect with him. We talk about the struggles men face in silence, the culture of "grind", intergenerational trauma, and the need for men to develop a comprehensive masculinity. Jason Wilson is the founder and CEO of the Yunion (pronounced union), a non-profit youth development organization in Detroit Michigan. Since 2003, the Yunion has effectively reached more than 15,000 youth and young adults through innovative prevention programming, trauma-informed care, parental engagement, and counseling. In 2008, Mr. Wilson’s heart for fatherless and misguided black boys inspired him to create and direct the Cave of Adullam Transformational Training Academy (CATTA).As an expert in Emotional Stability Training®, Wilson’s leadership has garnered the CATTA numerous acknowledgments and awards for his work teaching males how to introspectively confront and conquer their negative emotions with composure. In 2016, one of the CATTA’s videos went viral with over 80 million views worldwide. As a result, Mr. Wilson was invited to be a guest on the Dr. Oz Show and to present the CATTA at President Obama’s ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ Showcase at the White House. Later that year, NBC’s hit TV show ‘This Is Us’ was so inspired by Wilson’s work, that they featured the CATTA’s initiation ceremony in one of their most viewed and award winning episodes. In 2018, Mr. Wilson signed with actor/producer Laurence Fishburne’s film company Cinema Gypsy to produce a documentary film on Jason’s work with the CATTA. It is scheduled to be released in 2021. Mr. Wilson has over 25 years of martial arts experience, in addition to over 16 years of training and developing young black males.
