Ep 444Men's Work Session - Healing The Relationship To Anger
ETalking points: anger, inner critic, passive aggressiveness, shame Haven't done one of these in a while! Every so often I'll have an anonymous guest on the show to give listeners a glimpse into what men's work at ManTalks is actually like. This time, my guest is already familiar with what we do, so I dive right in. If you're the kind of person who has difficulty standing up for themselves, or can't seem to control negative self-talk, this may be a helpful episode to dig into. We talk a lot about something I call "implosive anger", aka when instead of having a healthy relationship with the anger you feel, you suppress and direct it back at yourself. Why Fewer Men Are Going To College (And Why That's A Huge Opportunity)
bonusFirst off, why is this happening? Second, is there any kind of silver lining? These are the two major questions on my mind this mini-episode, plus why I think there's a growing number of people (men especially) searching for more hands-on, apprenticeship style training. Ep 442Katherine Ann Cantrell - Is Healing Decades Of Trauma Even Possible?
ETalking points: trauma, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, trauma culture, therapy I was connected to Katherine Ann through my own mentor, the incredible gestalt therapist Duey Freeman. Her story is intense, powerful, and most importantly, it's shows the importance and possibilities inherent in trauma work and group work. I applaud Katherine Ann for coming forward and sharing her story. [00:01:12] - Katherine Ann's defining moment [00:08:50] - the role Katherine Ann's father played in her life [00:15:12] - Were you believed about what was happening, and how did your trauma start manifesting? [00:26:44] - How did what happened shape your perception of men, and how has that evolved since doing trauma excavation? [00:40:16] - What would you say to people who struggle with forgiving what's happened? [00:45:27] - What is trauma excavation? [00:54:44] - Do you get the sense that trauma work has become so mainstream it's been watered down? Katherine Ann is a mother of five grown children – 2 daughters and 3 stepsons. She resides in Boulder, CO with her beloved husband. After years of abuse and trauma, followed by 30 years (thus far) of healing, she recently released her website – see KatherineAnn.com – and is sharing her life story and experiences in hopes of helping others heal from trauma and abuse, and transform from a place of just surviving to thriving in life. The connection Katherine Ann has with (Connor) is through Duey Freeman, who has been a therapist for almost 50 years with about 80,000 contact hours with clients. Katherine Ann has worked with Duey individually and collectively with her siblings. Recently, Duey stated on Traver Boehm’s podcast that, Katherine Ann, and her brother and her sister, “were involved in probably the most bizarre and intense situation of abuse – both physical and sexual – that I’ve seen.” In 2008, in a letter of promotion for the three siblings when they planned to write a book together, Duey wrote about the abuse as, “the most intense, insidious, and malicious case of abuse and incest I have ever known. It is a story of love and hate, of physical and sexual abuse, of incredible humiliation and manipulation. A story that makes you cry and then pray for both forgiveness and healing.” Katherine Ann’s book will be published later this year. Ep 440Traver Boehm - How Do Men Stay Anchored In Modern Times?
ETalking points: AI, gender wars, masculinity, culture, relationships, dating, archetypes, myth All I can tell you is: this is a big one! Traver and I did an episode exchange for this one, and we always (I mean always) have great, wide-ranging conversations. It’s one of the bes gifts that comes from having old friends. This is the episode to listen to if you want to hear directly from two men’s coaches who have hands on experience with what men are undergoing these days, and some of the ways we can regulate and manage what seems to be ever-increasing chaos. He’s a two-time TEDx speaker, men’s coach, and the founder of the UNcivilized Men’s Movement. The Weaponization Of Psychology
bonusEThis is something I'm seeing a lot on social media, but also in everyday dialogue and even some clients: labeling someone with a definitive psychological term to shut down dialogue or shame someone else, usually without really knowing what's being talked about. This only speeds up our polarization and harms our ability to connect. How about we...stop doing that? Note: the article in the NYT I mentioned was written by Dr. Tara Isabella Burton, not Bayo Akomolafe. I'll link it below, along with his interview on the Emerald Podcast. Ep 439Dan Cnossen - Navy SEAL To Paralympic Athlete —One Day At A Time
Talking points: Navy SEALS, grit, BUD/S, hardship, mindset, rehabilitation, paralympics We had some network issues near the end, so Dan is coming back for round 2 soon! I'm grateful for every single interview I get to do, but it's less often that I'm so deeply humbled. Listening to Dan's story, and his thoughtful and considerate approach to such intense trauma, is something that will stick with me for a long, long time. Listen to this episode for a gripping and honest look into the life of an incredible athlete. (00:00:00) - Welcome and Dan's defining moment (00:06:09) - What was BUD/S like for Dan? What were some the greatest lessons? (00:19:20) - What goes into being a SEAL? (00:27:41) - What was your first deployment like? (00:33:11) - How Dan lost his legs (00:42:00) - The aftermath and the injuries (01:02:51) - Where did the desire to become a paralympic athelete come from? Lieutenant Commander Dan Cnossen was serving as the platoon commander for SEAL Team One in Afghanistan in September 2009 when he stepped on an IED (improvised explosive device) and was wounded in the explosion. The accident caused Cnossen to lose both his legs just above the knee. After over forty surgeries, Cnossen went through rehabilitation at the Bethesda National Naval Medical Center and later at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he learned to walk with his new prosthetics. Dan was awarded both a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with Valor from the Secretary of the Navy for his service in combat. Grew up on a fifth-generation family farm in Kansas, and his hobbies include running, reading, traveling, and surfing. Here's How You Deal With Regret
bonusTalking points: regret, purpose, direction I was recently reminded of a powerful moment I had with an old mentor. At the time, I was having trouble deciding what I wanted to do, where I wanted to go, and I felt directionless and fearful of regret. This is a topic I've covered before, but it's one worth reflecting on. Listen in. This podcast is brought to you by Organifi! Ep 438Coleman Hughes - The Collapse Of Moderate Politics
ETalking point: centrism, politics, social media, racism, censorship, AI, China, CRT Hot on the heels of last week's chat with Amir Odom, Coleman and I dug into a wide range of topics. We mostly focused on political polarization and where that's coming from, but also how AI might play into further issues, his definition of critical race theory, and much more. Listen to this episode if you've been curious about any of the above talking points, don't know where to start, and want a level-headed discussion. Coleman is a smart guy, and (I'd say) mostly center-right in his politics, so this is a good place to begin gaining awareness of the issues. [00:04:33] - Coleman's defining moment [00:10:16] - Do you think we live in a death-phobic culture? [00:14:50] - When you look at the American political landscape, how do you describe what's happening? [00:22:45] - Do you have any hope for the de-polarization of America? [00:31:55] - What are you most concerned about re: American democracy in 2023? [00:41:02] - CRT and education [00:51:50] - Cultural power vs political power [00:57:34] - On victimhood [01:05:31] - Can you define a race-blind society? Coleman Hughes is a writer, podcaster, and opinion columnist who specializes in issues related to race, public policy, and applied ethics. Coleman’s writing has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, National Review, Quillette, The City Journal, and The Spectator. He has appeared on many TV shows and podcasts, including Real Time with Bill Maher, Making Sense with Sam Harris, and The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast. In June 2019, he testified before the U.S. Congress. Born and raised in northern New Jersey, Coleman briefly attended the Juilliard School to study jazz trombone before dropping out to pursue a career as an independent jazz/hip-hop artist. Shortly thereafter, Coleman discovered a passion for applied ethics and public policy at Columbia University, where he graduated with a B.A. in philosophy. What Pornhub Data Says About Men
bonusETalking points: porn, stress, hentai, isolation Every year, Pornhub releases a bunch of stats detailing how long people are watching, top search terms, when people are watching, and more. This data is from Dec 2022, so it's a bit old, but I wanted to share some thoughts on what some of these stats might be implying, particularly for men. This is an episode for anyone curious about porn's implications outside of just "sexual entertainment". I go into how it might be affecting (or a be a response to) other parts of our lives, and offer up some thoughts on what to do. This podcast is brought to you by Organifi! Ep 437Amir Odom - Leaving BLM, And Concerns About The LGBTQ Community
ETalking points: growing up gay, LGBTQ+ issues, trans issues, culture Fair warning, this is a different kind of episode than the ones I usually put out. I encourage you to listen to it fully. Thanks to Amir for his candor and willingness to come on the show. Amir Odom takes time every week to reflect on…well, anything that’s been on his mind that week. Sometimes it’s current events, sometimes it’s a story from 10 years ago, sometimes it’s a conspiracy theory and sometimes it’s his alter ego “Jamal” going on a rant. You never know what you are going to get, but that’s what keeps it interesting. [05:17] - Amir’s defining moment[10:24] - What was life like for Amir growing up?[21:34] - Do Black Americans still face systemic issues?[27:27] - Is the culture most Black men grow up under not conducive? Ep 436Danica Patrick - Where Achievement And Spirituality Meet
ETalking points: masculinity, femininity, achievement, dating, psychedelics, competition, culture, truth, what men and women want (and what they get wrong) Wow. Danica and I covered a LOT of territory in this conversation. Like, top 3 widest-ranging conversations I’ve had on the podcast. Listen in for everything from masculine/feminine dynamics, to the nature of truth, to sharing psychedelic stories, to what men get wrong about women (and vice versa). This is a brilliant episode to dig into if you’re looking less for answers and more for wonder. Much of what we discussed is better served by not forcing solutions, but simply wondering about viewpoints. Plus, you get a little of everything in this one! [00:03:54] - Danica’s defining moment [00:11:41] - Women and the masculine [00:17:49] - How did masculine energy show up in Danica’s career? [00:23:47] - How does it feel to be told, as a woman, “You’re more masculine than I am”? [00:37:17] - The intersection of achievement and spirituality [00:44:52] - Psychedelic experiences [00:54:24] - How has your imagination and curiosity shaped your life? [01:08:28] - How do you view the masculine and feminine culturally? [01:30:18] - What do women get wrong about men, and vice versa? About Danica Patrick At just 10 years old, Danica’s racing career began after her parents bought her a go-kart. After winning numerous regional and national go-kart titles, Danica left the Midwest at 16 years old to compete in the cutthroat world of European road racing. As a racecar driver, Danica Patrick broke barriers and set records with her on-track performance. With her racing career behind her, Danica looks to her next chapter as she focuses on her passions: good food, great wine, fitness and helping others achieve their goals. Moving into her next chapter, retired from racing, Danica’s focus has shifted to her role as an entrepreneur and business owner. Danica has launched the clothing line – Warrior by Danica Patrick, authored a book Pretty Intense, and is the sole proprietor of Somnium, a vineyard in Napa Valley, California. In addition to these passion projects, Danica also continues to do inspirational speaking engagements and she plans to build upon these initiatives in the coming years. Ten Ways Men Destroy Their Lives
ETalking points: masculinity, discipline, purpose How's that for a spicy title? This is a look at some common behaviors and patterns I've seen in men overall, clients I've worked with, and my own life. Patterns that erode our capacity to truly live, lead, and love. 01:31 - We lack impulse control 04:06 - We chase p***y over purpose 08:42 - We don’t clarify our values, and we don’t say no to ourselves 09:35 - We pick the wrong partner 12:26 - We settle for an “okay” career or business 17:10 - We lack like-minded men that our willing to challenge us 21:21 - We haven’t prioritized seeing what our body is capable of 24:23 - We choose domestication over discipline 26:15 - We don’t take money seriously 30:11 - We disconnect from a sense of wonder This podcast is brought to you by Organifi! Ep 433Frans de Waal - Defining Gender Through The Eyes Of A Primatologist
Talking points: gender, gender equality, alpha males, alpha females, violence, culture, psychology I’ve been following Frans’ work for a while, and have admired how dedicated he is to his work and to uncovering the complexity of primates. This was such an enjoyable and fascinating conversation! This episode is a compelling look at just how complex and nuanced something like gender can be, from one of THE world’s top primatologists. With more and more pressure to outsource your opinions, your arguments, and your beliefs to the fastest talking pundit, it’s more important than ever to take a step back, breathe, and check the science. Dr. Frans B. M. de Waal is a Dutch/American biologist and primatologist known for his work on the behavior and social intelligence of primates. His first book, Chimpanzee Politics (1982) compared the schmoozing and scheming of chimpanzees involved in power struggles with that of human politicians. Ever since, de Waal has drawn parallels between primate and human behavior, from peacemaking and morality to culture. His scientific work has been published in hundreds of technical articles in journals such as Science, Nature, Scientific American, and outlets specialized in animal behavior. His popular books — translated into twenty languages — have made him one of the world's most visible primatologists. His latest books are The Age of Empathy (2009), and The Bonobo and the Atheist (2013). Two recent edited volumes are The Primate Mind (2012) and Evolved Morality (2014). De Waal is C. H. Candler Professor in the Psychology Department of Emory University and Director of the Living Links Center at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, in Atlanta, Georgia. Since 2013, he is a Distinguished Professor (Universiteitshoogleraar) at Utrecht University. He has been elected to the (US) National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences. In 2007, he was selected by Time as one of The Worlds' 100 Most Influential People Today, and in 2011 by Discover as among 47 (all time) Great Minds of Science. Being editor-in-chief of the journal Behaviour, de Waal has stepped in the footsteps of Niko Tinbergen, one of the founders of ethology. His latest research concerns empathy and cooperation, inequity aversion and social cognition in chimpanzees, bonobos, and other species. He and his students have pioneered studies on how behavior is culturally transmitted in the primates, whether elephants recognize themselves in mirrors, how primates react to unequal reward divisions, how well primates spontaneously cooperate, and whether bonobo orphans are as emotionally affected by their trauma as human orphans. Why Are 66% Of Young Men Single?
bonusETalking points: dating apps, selection preferences, statistics, what to do I don't know the specific number of people actually satisfied with the modern dating scene, but given what I've read and researched, it's a VERY small number. What happened, and what can men do? In this mini-ep, I dig into some statistics around modern dating, how it's been a growing shift for a while now, and what young men can do about it instead of giving in to cynicism, misogyny, or victimhood. [00:00] The stats and what women seem to want. [03:58] Women’s selection preferences mean their pool of eligible men is shrinking. [06:27] Even I noticed this back in the day. [08:02] The data can be overwhelming; what are the consequences of that? [11:21] Prioritize male friendships. Go out and do things. Here’s why. [15:33] Don’t allow yourself to read data like this and become the victim. [16:24] How Quinn Mossmacher in White Lotus seems like the epitomization of what many young men are experiencing. Ep 432Darren Silver - The Importance Of Direct Connection To Nature
Talking points: vision quests, initiation, culture, ritual Do things like vision quests and ceremony actually DO anything? Should they? What does it mean to "connect to a place"? What happens to a man when he's immersed in nature—without a phone or a to-do list or even a destination? These are some of the wonderings I had with Mr. Darren Silver in this fascinating and enjoyable conversation. I'm a big believer in getting everything, not just men, out into the wild occasionally to reconnect with the non-human, and Darren shows us just how fruitful that can be. Darren Silver, MA, is a rite of passage guide, Nature-Connected Coach, ceremonialist, and innovative educator. He has over a decade of experience working with ritual, wilderness living skills, and guiding transformational experiences residentially and internationally. A gifted storyteller and apprentice to the old myths, Darren weaves the power of the natural world, vision, and community in devotion to the remembrance of regenerative culture. The Importance Of Myth In Personal Development, Growth, And Healing
bonusOne of biggest traps in anyone's healing journey is the idea that it's linear and rational. Yeah, you need tactics and plans, but if you go in thinking healing of ANY kind is like a recipe for cookies, you're not gonna have a good time. Ep 431Adam Hart - Staying Grounded When Everything Wants Your Attention
Talking points: breath work, balance, burnout, stress and the brain, hustle culture, children, digital detoxing It's a very demanding jungle out there. In a culture that seems to thrive on your being burnt out, how do you fight back? Can you? I sat down with my old friend Adam Hart this week to cover exactly that. Many of Adam's clients compare his work to a finding the “Fountain of Youth” as they regularly break free from self sabotage, fatigue and unhealthy behaviours that they have been stuck in for you years. Adam specializes in helping people ignite their full potential by unlocking themselves from patterns of stress and anxiety and begin to master the mindset necessary for living a fulfilled and purposeful life. With a degree in Sociology and accreditation by the Canadian Mental Health Association, Adam has coached hundreds of people over the past 15+ years as Founder of Clear Impact, established in 2005. When Adam is not coaching, he can be found hanging out with his loving wife and two kids in the mountains of Squamish BC, Canada. Together they enjoy rock climbing, mountain biking, skiing, and foraging in nature. Fun Fact: Adam loves playing hide and seek with his kids. Sometimes he even wins. The Biggest Lie About Self-Sabotage
bonusCue "Sweet Little Lies" by Fleetwood Mac, please. Why DO we self-sabotage? Ep 430Boyd Varty - Lion Tracking, Meaning Making, And Healing Trauma
ETalking points: working in/with the wild, initiation, trauma, what nature teaches you, masculinity This has been one of my most anticipated guests of all time. Like, years. An incredible storyteller, a man with a mighty heart and passion for everything wilderness, this is an episode I encourage you to share with the men in your life. Seriously. The wildlife and literacy activist Boyd Varty, author of the memoir Cathedral of the Wild, had an unconventional upbringing. Born to a family of conservationists, Boyd grew up on Londolozi Game Reserve in the South African wilderness, a place where man and nature strive for balance, where perils exist alongside wonders. Founded more than 90 years ago as a hunting ground, Londolozi was transformed into a nature reserve beginning in 1973 by Varty’s father and uncle, visionaries of the restoration movement. But it wasn’t just a sanctuary for the animals; it was also a place for ravaged land to flourish again and for the human spirit to be restored. When Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years of imprisonment, he came to the reserve to recover. Since childhood, Boyd shared his home with lions, leopards, snakes, and elephants and has spent his life in apprenticeship to the wisdom of nature. Boyd survived a harrowing black mamba encounter, a debilitating bout with malaria, even a vicious crocodile attack, but his biggest challenge was a personal crisis of purpose. As a university student, he studied psychology and ecology, supplementing his education by learning martial arts in Thailand, hiking through the jungles of the Amazon, and apprenticing to a renowned tracker from the Shangaan tribe, deepening his intimate knowledge of the natural world. Boyd grew up speaking the local language and learning the true meaning of coexistence between people and with nature. Ep 424Jeremie Lotemo - Navigating America, Masculinity, And Partnership
Talking points: transition, moving from the Congo to America, equality, masculinity, and relationships. This was a phenomenal conversation. Full stop. Jeremie and I cover a lot of ground, and I'm grateful to have his insight and perspective on men's work. It's nuanced, clear, and deeply authentic. Jeremie Lotemo is a transformation coach helping clients create lasting change by examining the stories and beliefs that influence them on an unconscious level. He works to help them reestablish safety in the body in order to recognize these beliefs and release them completely. Before becoming a coach, Jeremie was an account manager for one of the fastest-growing marketing agencies in Atlanta, eventually developing his own agency. For years, he helped clients use advertising to influence the behavior of their customers. This led him to analyze how much of his own life, choices, and ambitions were a product of someone else’s story. Ep 421Humble The Poet - What Is Love?
Baby don't hurt me for the cheesy (but very appropriate) title. You'll just have to listen in. Talking points: love, family, growing up as an immigrant, community, vulnerability, business, self-love vs self-respect vs self-esteem Huge honor to sit down with Humble the Poet last month. This was a fascinating and engaging conversation. I deeply appreciate his creative, spiritual, and energetic approach to one of biggest human questions: what is love, really? Kanwer Singh aka Humble The Poet is a Toronto-bred MC/Spoken word artist with an aura that embodies the diversity and resiliency of one of the world’s most unique cities. With tattoos, beard, head wrap, and a silly smile, Humble commands attention. He stimulates audiences with ideas that challenge conventional wisdom and go against the grain, with dynamic live sets that shake conventions and minds at the same time. Humble's distinctive style and point of view have also been featured on popular television program CBC's Canada Reads, and took home top prize. He was also featured in Apple's first Canadian ad spot for their #ShotOnIphone campaign. Humble's latest EP titled Righteous/Ratchet features the first single H.A.I.R, a celebration of women of all shapes, sizes, hair, and walks of life. His self-directed video for H.A.I.R has amassed almost 2 million views since its release. The video features YouTube sensation and longtime collaborator Lilly Singh. Humble's first book, Unlearn: 101 Simple Truths For A Better Life, was published through Indigo Press in October 2017. It became a Heather's Pick and has stayed on the Globe & Mail Bestsellers list since its release. Unlearn was re-released with Harper Collins Publishing in April 2019. Humble's next book: Things No One Else Can Teach Us was released in the fall of 2019. His latest book is titled HOW TO BE LOVE(d): Simple Truths For Going Easier On Yourself, Embracing Imperfection & Loving Your Way To A Better Life. Humble offers insightful stories from his own deeply personal experience with love and down-to-earth advice on the most important lesson he’s ever learned: love isn’t found or earned, it’s realized. The Myth Of Male Vulnerability
bonusOne of the bigger asks of men these days can be summed up as "be more vulnerable". But what does that mean? Specifically, what does that mean for men in real life, not just online? Like so many things, the issue is so much more complex. This podcast is brought to you by Organifi! Plant-based nutrition that's science-backed, high quality, and something I use literally every day. Ryan Michler - What Is Masculinity And Why It Matters
Ryan was one of the very first guests I had on the show, so this has been a long overdue conversation! As per the title, this is a simple but charged interview; we dig deep into Ryan's take on the question "what is masculinity?" Ryan Michler is a husband, father, Iraqi Combat Veteran, and the Founder of Order of Man. Ryan grew up without a permanent father figure and has seen first-hand how a lack of strong, ambitious, self-sufficient men has impacted society today. He believes many of the world’s most complicated problems could be solved if men everywhere learned how to be better husbands, fathers, businessmen, and community leaders. It has now become his life’s mission to help men across the planet step more fully into their roles as protectors, providers, and presiders over themselves, their families, their businesses, and their communities. You can find him blogging and podcasting at Order of Man where he is working to help men become all they were meant to be. New Year's Resolutions Don't Work. Try This Instead.
bonusIf you've been listening for a while, you know full well I'm not a fan of New Year's Resolutions. Back in my early thirties, after countless attempts at getting into the next gym habit or productivity hack, I practiced something else that had a lot more impact. This is what it was.
