Weekly Training: Your Shadow & Relationships
bonusI continue to be blown away by what people are discovering in The Shadow Course, which I released recently. The questions and insights people are bringing to the table are leaving me so grateful and excited. This week, someone brought up an amazing question on how the shadow affects relationships, and I wanted to do a bit of a deep dive on it: how the shadow shows up in relationships, how it actually helps us pick partners, and how some of the relationships we enter into are the shadow made manifest. I hope you enjoy! Did you enjoy the podcast? If so, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser. S1 Ep 321Cinema Therapy - Marvel, Archetypes, and Masculinity in Movies
What makes villians like Thanos and Killmonger so compelling? Is there a trend in how our culture looks at heroes? What's the modern idea of a hero even look like? I connected with Cinema Therapy over Zoom, and we nerd out on the intersection of psychology, film, and culture. We cover masculinity in movies and its history, what Marvel is doing right, Heath Ledger’s Joker versus Joaquin Phoenix’s, and why superheroes are so important right now. This was a fun, compelling interview. Alan and Jonathan are brilliant, funny, and genuinely wholesome people. There’s also a recipe for a mean chocolate smoothie if you listen in close. Cinema Therapy is hosted by licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright. They discuss how movies can be used to improve your life, and how to watch movies with your brain turned on. Also, there are jokes. Weekly Training: How To Heal From Being Cheated On
bonusSeven pieces of honest, practical, and actionable advice for what to do after being cheated on, because—contrary to popular belief—the aftermath isn't always clear-cut. Being cheated on can be devastating, freeing, confronting, an incredible learning experience, and everything in between. Whatever it is, it always needs processing, and it always needs healing. If you've ever been cheated on, have a listen. Or if you know someone who's trying to recover, maybe send this their way. And as always, feel free to send me a DM on insta @mantalks, or leave a rating and review so this reaches further. Did you enjoy the podcast? Weekly Training: The Ultimate Guide To Coping Mechanisms
bonusThe title says it all. After getting a few questions from folks in the Shadow Course and some others on Insta, I wanted to break down coping mechanisms in multiple ways, because the concept can be extremely broad. For example, what’s the difference between defense mechanisms and coping mechanisms? What’s the difference between adaptive and maladaptive? And maybe most importantly, how do we set boundaries on these? Did you enjoy the podcast? If so, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser. Weekly Training: The Secret To Discipline
bonusFriends, we need to talk about discipline, but not in a clickbaity way. Discipline is way too often presented as this monolithic, punishing thing, and that’s an illusion. It’s also—especially these days—an endpoint. That’s also an illusion. Discipline is a daily practice and deepening the connection to your own self-worth and self-respect. Listen in. S1 Ep 318Makoto Fujimura - Culture, Art, Faith, and the Theology of Making
In this ep, I sit down with acclaimed, New York-based artist Makoto Fujimura. Makoto is a fascinating man: someone who's perfectly balanced the "border stalking" (his words) nature of artists with a deep and abiding faith. We talk about how to mends trauma and end cultural divides, the nature of God, and the role of artists as healers and integrators. Makoto Fujimura is a leading contemporary artist whose process-driven, refractive “slow art” has been described by David Brooks of New York Times as “a small rebellion against the quickening of time”. Robert Kushner, in the mid 90’s, spoke of Fujimura’s art this way: “The idea of forging a new kind of art, about hope, healing, redemption, refuge, while maintaining visual sophistication and intellectual integrity is a growing movement, one which finds Makoto Fujimura’s work at the vanguard.” Fujimura’s art is collected and featured widely in galleries and museums around the world, including The Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, The Huntington Library, the Tikotin Museum in Israel, Dillon Gallery and Waterfall Mansion in New York, Sato Museum in Tokyo, The Tokyo National University of Fine Arts Museum, Bentley Gallery in Arizona, Gallery Exit and Oxford House at Taikoo Place in Hong Kong, Vienna’s Belvedere Museum, and Shusaku Endo Museum in Nagasaki. He is one of the first artists to paint live on stage at New York City’s legendary Carnegie Hall as part of an ongoing collaboration with composer and percussionist, Susie Ibarra. Fujimura is also an arts advocate, writer, and speaker who is recognized worldwide as a cultural influencer. A Presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts from 2003-2009, Fujimura served as an international advocate for the arts, speaking with decision makers and advising governmental policies on the arts. His books have won numerous awards, including the Aldersgate Prize for “Silence and Beauty”. Fujimura's highly anticipated book Art+Faith: A Theology of Making (Yale Press, with foreword by N.T. Wright, 2021) has been described by poet Christian Wiman as "a real tonic for our atomized time". Weekly Training: What Is The Cost of Freedom?
bonusIt’s a simple question, but with a pretty uncomfortable answer for some of us. S1 Ep 317Francis Weller - The Death of the Hero and The Importance of Mythology
It’s difficult for me to describe how much I value Francis Weller and his work, and I wanted him on because of his expertise on grief, something that is—inevitably—a part of every human life. We dig into Western culture's obsession with "the Hero", where we truly find redemption and healing, and the inherent emptiness of individualism. Heavy stuff, and incredibly powerful. This is also a part of a new series I’ve titled Living Through an Age of Crisis. Episodes in this series are dedicated to helping listeners navigate the confusion and chaos of our times. I’ll be bringing on experts in psychology, spirituality, history, propaganda, and culture to offer their insights on what the real situation is and how we can move through it. Francis Weller, MFT, is a psychotherapist, writer, and soul activist. He is a master of synthesizing diverse streams of thought from psychology, anthropology, mythology, alchemy, indigenous cultures, and poetic traditions. Author of The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief; The Threshold Between Loss and Revelation, (with Rashani Réa) and In the Absence of the Ordinary: Essays in a Time of Uncertainty, he has introduced the healing work of ritual to thousands of people. He founded and directs WisdomBridge, an organization that offers educational programs that seek to integrate the wisdom from indigenous cultures with the insights and knowledge gathered from western poetic, psychological, and spiritual traditions. As a gifted therapist and teacher, Francis has been described as a jazz artist, improvising and moving fluidly in and out of deep emotional territories with groups and individuals, bringing imagination and attention to places often held with judgment and shame. Francis received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay and two Master’s Degrees from John F. Kennedy University in Clinical Psychology and Transpersonal Psychology. His writings have appeared in anthologies and journals exploring the confluence between psyche, nature, and culture. His work was featured in The Sun magazine (October 2015) the Utne Reader (Fall 2016) and the Kosmos Journal. (Winter 20201) He is a frequent presenter and keynote speaker at conferences, bringing insight, poetry and a breath of humor to his talks. Francis is currently on staff at Commonweal Cancer Help Program, co-leading their week-long retreats with Michael Lerner. He has taught at Sonoma State University, the Sophia Center in Oakland, and has been the featured teacher at the Minnesota Men's Conference. He is currently completing his third book, A Trail on the Ground: The Geography of Soul. He has created three CD sets, two focusing on healing shame and one on “Restoring the Soul of the World.” His latest offerings are a 10-session audio series on "Living a Soulful Life and Why It Matters." and "The Alchemy of Initiation: Soul Work and the Art of Ripening." Are You Caught In Codependent Masculinity?
bonusAfter a great DM on Instagram and a heavy convo with Mike Campbell on his podcast, Everyday Legends, I wanted to riff on this idea a little more deeply. Tens of millions of men have put their masculinity into a dangerously codependent relationship with certain external institutions and narratives. Many of them do this without even questioning what they lose: the means for self-validation, self-leadership, and—this is a big one—mental and spiritual freedom. Did you enjoy the podcast? In this episode, a previous anon guest is joining me for a second time. Our previous session was powerful, and I wanted to have him on again to look at his long time struggles with body image, weight, and the relationship his father archetype has with all of it. Weekly Training: Practical Steps For Shadow Work
bonusToday I take a look at some of the initial and critical steps of shadow work. You probably know by now I’m a huge proponent of shadow work. For most of us, working on our inner darkness and negative emotions might seem. completely upside-down. So much of modern self-help ideology focus on keeping you “in the light”: feeling good no matter what and never actually dealing with the stuff that hurts and sabotages you. But the more we avoid this side of ourselves and the pain it holds, the black and denser it becomes. Did you enjoy the podcast? Weekly Training: How To Recap Your Year
bonusThe last episode of the year, my friends. I recorded this while outside, so you’ll get some wind and nature sounds alongside. I take a look at the incredible poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling, facing your relationship to paradox, and some ideas on how to effectively recap and learn from this past (and intense) year. Q&A: How To Properly Process A Breakup, Pick Up Culture, and Allowing When We Want To Fight
bonusI find a lot of joy in doing Q&As. It’s a pretty direct connection to someone, it helps me know what folks are curious about, and can help more than just the one person who asked. The last time I asked my followers to send in their questions, I got several hundred questions, so this week we’ll look at how to properly deal with a breakup, my take on pickup artists and that culture, and understanding the art of allowing. S1 Ep 313Adam Andros Aronovich - Meaning-Making, Psychedelics, and Masculinity
This was an incredible conversation. Adam and I spoke over Zoom, and covered a ton of ground, but focused mainly on three major topics: why psychedelics are making such big waves right now, the impact of things like psilocybin and ayahuasca on men and their sense of masculinity, and our growing societal need for new therapies and new modes of thinking. Born in the urban jungles of Mexico City, raised mostly in Israel, and having lived in 7 different countries, Adam naturally embodies interculturalism. A psychologist, cognitive scientist, and medical anthropologist, he has also studied traditional systems of medicine in Mexico, India, and Peru, adopting a dialectical approach that integrates evidence-based science and traditional worldviews. He’s worked extensively in western psychiatric institutions and has spent time learning from a variety of indigenous and traditional healers around the world, trying to understand the diverse manifestations, conceptualizations of, and approaches to mental illness and mental health. Balancing between research and practice, he is an active member of the “Medical Anthropology Research Center” (MARC), and the “Interdisciplinary Psychedelic Studies” (IPS) group, both in Catalunya, while sharing his extensive experience facilitating transformational processes in a variety of psychedelic support and harm-reduction projects around the world, such as the Kosmicare Project in Portugal or the Zendo Project in the United States. Adam is an advocate for cognitive liberty, neurodiversity, and the integration of non-ordinary states of being into our culturally constructed definitions of normalcy and sanity, with a growing interest in the ecological and environmental dimensions of mental health and the importance of reciprocity, mutuality, and interdependence to our well-being. S1 Ep 312Rich Loesing - Movember and De-Stigmatizing Men’s Health

Weekly Traning: Finding Masculine Purpose
bonusI’m a big believer in balance, and I think the dance between yin and yang (or masculine/feminine, or whatever polarity names you like) provides a ton of insight. So, this week’s mini ep is all about giving your masculine energy purpose and direction. Masculine energy can help you structure your life, mind, and career, but—hard truth here—it’ll only get you so far by itself. Without external purpose, left to only serve itself, the masculine can slowly and unconsciously rationalize self-harm. Let me know your take; leave a rating or review! S1 Ep 311Dave M Mayer - The Impact of One-Dimensional Masculinity
This is a heavy and fascinating ep, my friends. Our workplace can be one of the single greatest factors in our mental health, so I wanted to sit down with one of America's leaders in business ethics and masculine psychology, Dave M Mayer. We dive deep into the research to discuss the ways "one-dimensional" masculinity impacts the work we do, the language we use, and the backlash men might get when they stray from it (for example, losing a promotion if they take paternity leave). How do we do better—not just for men and women, but for our culture? Listen in. Dave Mayer is the John H. Mitchell Professor of Business Ethics at University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. An award-winning researcher and highly rated and sought after teacher and speaker, he is an expert on helping people and organizations lead ethically, inclusively, and positively. He is a regular contributor to the Harvard Business Review and Fast Company, and his research and ideas have been covered in Bloomberg, Forbes, Fortune, Newsweek, NPR, Psychology Today, Slate, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. In his research and teaching, Dave examines how to help men adapt to a healthier form of masculinity that benefits not only themselves, but all people in their lives. Weekly Training: Gratitude In Times Of Crisis
bonusThis was inspired by a conversation I had with a client of mine. When you're living in a time of crisis, how in the world do you maintain gratitude? When the faith in our abilities as individuals, communities, even as a species is shaken, it's easy to gorge on the soup of fear and leave any idea of thankfulness behind. The way out? We need to (myself included!) build a relationship with the fear within ourselves, because that will lead us to what we truly, deeply value. I hope you listen in. S1 Ep 310Dr. Nicole LePera - What It Means to Self-Heal
What if you could change your patterns—permanently? What if there’s more to you than just a body or just a mind? These are just two of the questions that ignited Dr. Nicole LePera’s (aka the hugely popular @the.holistic.psychologist) pursuit of a more holistic style of healing. It was an honor to sit down with her and share journeys of healing, how important it is to face your unhealthy patterns outside of the therapist’s office, how to bring healing and awareness into your online interactions, and so much more. Dr. Nicole LePera was trained in clinical psychology at Cornell University and the New School for Social Research. She also studied at the Philadelphia School of Psychoanalysis. As a clinical psychologist in private practice, Dr. Nicole LePera often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients—and for herself—she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical, and spiritual health that equips people with the tools necessary to heal themselves. Nothing short of a paradigm shift, Dr. Nicole LePera’s teachings empower the individual to break free from trauma cycles and create who they want to become. Thinking Out Loud: Why Is The Internet So Triggering?
bonusThe internet is an ocean. Just like our actual oceans, there’s incredible diversity and beauty. There’s also a solid and growing amount of garbage. Why is it like this, and why does online discourse often leave us exhausted and angry? This week, I propose this: What if the internet is an expression of humanity’s collective unconscious? S1 Ep 309Dr. Alan K Davis - Psychedelics, Depression, and Healing the Mind
I’m excited for this one! On November 4th, JAMA Psychiatry published a study with an impressive claim: psilocybin was (get this) at least 4 times more effective on major depression than the usual antidepressants. Plant medicine is a big fascination for me, so it was so rewarding to speak with one of the authors that study, Dr. Alan K Davis. Alan is on the bleeding edge of both the research and the practical treatment at Johns Hopkins, and we talk about how the study was set up, the barriers involved, the effects on the patients, and some of the upcoming (and promising) studies in the pipeline. Dr. Alan K Davis is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at The Ohio State University and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Davis’s clinical experience includes working with people diagnosed with trauma-based psychological problems such as addiction, PTSD, depression, and anxiety. His clinical expertise includes providing evidenced-based treatments such as motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy. Consistent with his clinical interests, his research interests and expertise focus on contributing to the knowledge of and ability to help those suffering with substance use and mental health problems, understanding how to improve clinical outcomes through examining new treatments, and developing ways to conceptualize substance use and mental health problems through a strengths-based approach. He recently completed a clinical trial of psilocybin therapy for major depressive disorder and current trials include exploring this treatment for patients with co-occurring alcohol use disorder and depression and patients with anorexia. He actively explores topics related to naturalistic psychedelic use among several populations including people of color who have experienced racial trauma, Spanish-speaking people, and people who use novel psychedelics such as 5-MeO-DMT. Weekly Training: Unpacking The Female Narcissist
bonusI get a large number of requests from men, women, and clients to discuss this topic. Surprisingly, a number of people have also asked, “Can a woman actually be a narcissist too?” So I dug into the research, consulted some therapist and coach friends of mine, and decided to tackle the topic gently but directly. The word “narcissist” gets used as a label way, way too often, and waters down the issues faced by people who have actually dealt with clinical narcissism. Let's unpack and get some insight. If you (or someone you know) think you may have encountered abuse by a narcissist, there’s a great collection of resources and support you can find on Reddit here. Note, this is a support subreddit, not a replacement for therapy or counseling. S1 Ep 308The Magician Archetype - Exploring The Origins Of Wisdom (Re-release)
bonusEI recorded this ep last spring--part of a miniseries on Jungian archetypes and the fantastic book, King, Warrior, Magician, Lover. Considering the need for healing and wisdom in the face of so much uncertainty and change, it felt like a good time to pull it out of the archives. This is a deep dive into the archetype known as The Magician. An integrated, healthy one heals, transforms, enlightens, and creates. But his shadow…well, listen in and see. Weekly Training: What Now? Staying Grounded in Ambiguity
bonusI recorded this yesterday, after election day, and wanted to both weigh in on things and also zoom out a bit and take a look at one of the more pervasive aspects of 2020: ambiguity. At the end, I give some helpful tips and some hard-hitting prompts to help you navigate. When there are so many possibilities and so many variables, the mist of ambiguity is obviously the result. When we combine that with (as the science has shown) our inherent negativity bias, our rational mind can feel completely uprooted and react in unhealthy ways. So how do you manage ambiguity? How do you move into an intuition-based form of decision-making? If anything resonates, let me know! Leave a rating or review, or hit me up @mantalks on Instagram. S1 Ep 307Anonymous Guest Session - Healing From Family Addiction
EWe dug into several things in this session, but at the core were the aftereffects of a family member’s struggle with alcoholism. Thinking Out Loud: Desire vs Seeking and The Hardest Thing
bonusThis week’s mini-ep is just me thinking out loud on what desire really means. It seems like our culture has built a massive framework around desire, or more accurately, built it to imply your lack of something, and therefore need to “get it”. But the big secret is the final source of contentment--the satisfaction we’ve been outsourcing for years--is only found within. To be clear, I’m not denying external hardships--particularly for people who have been oppressed by that same framework that always leaves us wanting more. What I’m saying is: whether it’s a million dollars, retweets, likes, sex partners, or [insert desire here], it’s not going to “solve” desire. Only self-compassion, silence, and awareness can do that. I hope this resonates with you. If it does, let me know on Instagram @mantalks, or better yet, leave me a rating or review! S1 Ep 306Oren Jay Sofer - Nonviolent Communication, Behaviour vs Character, and “Lifting Up The Goodness”
How do we understand each other, especially when we disagree? This week, I sat down with one of the leaders in nonviolent communication, or NVC, Oren Jay Sofer. If you're unsure of what nonviolent communication actually is, you'll have a solid grasp after this! For Oren, language runs deep. It’s intimately connected to universal, fundamental human drives, social structures, and even our physicality. We chat about the basic framework of mindful and nonviolent communication, our current “attack based” online culture, and some of Oren’s personal journey and defining moments. Oren was an incredible guest. The word that came up for me was “sincere”. He’s incredibly well-read, intelligent, honest, and his desire to create a world where everyone is respected and in harmony rings clear in everything we spoke about that. Oren Jay Sofer teaches Buddhist meditation, mindfulness, and Nonviolent Communication nationally. A member of the Spirit Rock Teachers Council, he holds a degree in Comparative Religion from Columbia University, is the author of Say What You Mean: A Mindful Approach to Nonviolent Communication, and co-author of Teaching Mindfulness to Empower Adolescents. Oren is co-founder of Mindful Healthcare and the founder of Next Step Dharma, an innovative online program that helps meditators integrate their retreat experiences into daily life. Weekly Training: Practicing Memento Mori - The Awareness of Death
bonusThis week’s mini-episode is a personal one, and about one of the most ancient and powerful rituals we as humans can practice: memento mori--being mindful of the inevitability of death. I dive into how memento mori works as a contemplative practice, its history, and why it’s more than just some personal development tool. Modern culture works hard to avoid even the idea of death, to the point where we water down some our most compelling stories and ideas. Tons of time is spent on practically forcing light and joy and life. But death helps inform us of how we are living--right here, right now. As always, let me know your take. S1 Ep 305Reggie Hubbard - Weathering Politics, Activism’s Purpose, and Achieving Racial Equality
EThis was a powerful interview, and I’m grateful to have had the chance to listen to Reggie’s peace-oriented mindset and his perspective on a highly divisive period in American history. We dove into understanding the origins of modern activism and activist groups, Black Lives Matter, why discussions fall apart, and how we might repair them. Listen in for an honest, real conversation, and if it resonates, please share! Help us reach more people like you. Reggie Hubbard has held many senior strategic and logistical roles across a variety of fields, ranging from global marketing, digital and community organizing, government relations, international education to Presidential campaigning. He currently serves as a senior political strategist for MoveOn, managing their relationships, impact, and communications with Capitol Hill and among the broader progressive movement. Reggie is also a 500 hour certified yoga teacher and authored a thesis entitled, "Yoga and Spiritual Activism: Serving Humanity from a Sense of Devotion and Love." He has studied extensively with leading teachers such as Faith Hunter, Amy Ippolitti, Yogarupa Rod Stryker, Sri Dharma Mittra as well as many amazing teachers along the way. In July 2020, Reggie helped launch a grassroots campaign along with David Lipsius, Amy Ippoliti, Jack Kornfeld, and Tara Brach called Buddhists and Yogis United. This is an effort to share information and inspire teachers and their respective communities to encourage active civic participation in the upcoming election and beyond. Reggie has taught Members of Congress, Congressional Staff, leading progressive organizations and individuals, sharing techniques for growing peace and ease as a foundation, not an afterthought. The focus of his teaching practice is to bring more peace and balance to activists AND to guide the wellness community toward being more engaged, concerned citizens. S1 Ep 304Lee Chambers - Building a Regenerative Lifestyle, Mindset, Workplace, and Home
EI often tell clients, “say yes to the man you want to be”, and Lee Chambers is someone who decided to shout it! From running a seven-figure business to losing his ability to walk, he’s seen a lot. I was amazed by his struggles, but moreso by his deliberate, intentional reframing of them. Lee’s story is an incredibly powerful example of how mindset and action work together to define who you are and who you want to be. We cover a lot. Lee’s origin story, the big-picture ideas of environmental psychology, how to optimize your home office, and more. Weekly Training: You Ask, I Answer Part 1 - Craving the Extreme and When to Walk Away
bonusI genuinely enjoy getting questions from listeners, so this Q&A will be a two-parter! This week, I touch on three big questions: why some people crave the extreme, how to move on from a relationship full of love but doesn’t meet your needs, and when to walk away from a partner who is ambivalent about the relationship. If you know someone who can relate to these questions, share this with them! We’re all in this together. If you have any questions of your own, hit me up on Instagram (@mantalks). S1 Ep 303Anonymous Guest Session - The Feeling of Not Belonging
I like to occasionally feature a shadow-work session with someone I’ve never worked with before, and this one got powerful fast. My guest came to me wanting to work on the intersection of his sexuality and his religion; he feels fulfilled by being a leader in his community, but he also feels a clash between the pressure to “be religious” and be a sexual being at the same time. This expanded into a deep dive on the feeling of isolation and not belonging. This is a unique opportunity for you to listen to some real-time shadow work, where I guide a man through and into their shadow so they can get at what’s keeping them stuck or sabotaged. Weekly Training - Transition, Change, and Moving Through Crisis (with Vienna Pharaon)
bonusBy the time you listen to this, my incredible wife Vienna and I will be on the road, heading into a new chapter of our lives. It seemed like the perfect time to talk about “moving” through crisis (see what I did there?). Because, like so many of our friends, clients, and listeners, the last several months threw a lot of plans into disarray. So we sat down together to discuss clinging to expectations, navigating “forced change”, and the lessons we’ve learned from transition points in our own lives. S1 Ep 302Monk Yun Rou - Daoism As A Cure For Chaos
You’re going to want a comfy chair for this one. This week, my guest is Daoist Monk Yun Rou. Yun Rou is a brilliant interpreter of ancient ideas for a modern ear--if you’ve read his book The Mad Monk Manifesto you’ll know what I’m talking about. We got heavy into social media and how it affects us, why you might know more about Daoism than you think, and how Daoist philosophy can offer us a different, more holistic view of everything; from our own minds to the workings of the universe. If you consider yourself a seeker, this is the episode to listen to. Called the new Alan Watts for his teachings and the Zen Gabriel Garcia Marquez for his writings, Daoist Monk Yun Rou (formerly Arthur Rosenfeld) received his academic education at Yale, Cornell, and the University of California and was ordained a monk in an official ceremony at the Chun Yang Daoist Temple in Guangzhou, China. His work has appeared in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Parade, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, WebMD, Fox Business News, and numerous other websites and newspapers. Weekly Training: Why Men WANT To Hit Rock Bottom
bonusThis is a really important topic for me; it’s one of the reasons I started ManTalks. In this episode, I check out why men seem to only turn things around after everything’s on fire. I dive a bit into the shadow aspects of modern masculine culture, and how they amplify the problem (hint: shame is a big player). Every man’s journey is different, but there’s one thing we all need--and I mean need--to do: challenge the narrative that suppression equals strength. Listen in to hear why, and as always, let me know your take; leave a rating or review. Also, share this with someone you think would benefit! S1 Ep 301John Beede - Cultivating Resiliency, Rites of Passage, and Shifting Your Finish Line
What does resiliency mean? How do you build the ability to bounce back after an event that shakes you to your core? How does it change you? To help answer these I spoke with adventurer, author, entrepreneur, humanitarian, and keynote speaker John Beede, and we dove straight into the hard stuff. It was a real pleasure to chat with John about what drew him to mountains, his struggles and victories, his new book, and the pressure men are often under to either tough it out, nice it out, or numb it out. John Beede has climbed to the top of the tallest mountain on every continent, including Mount Everest. During the 9 year adventure, he somehow survived avalanches, pulmonary edema, tribal warfare, and a whole lot of Clif bars. He’s a worldwide adventurer who has traveled to 65 countries, written 3 books, and given live presentations to nearly 1 million live teen and middle school audience members. His new book is called The Warrior Challenge: 8 Quests for Boys to Grow Up with Kindness, Courage, and Grit. Thinking Out Loud: The Looming Mental Health Crisis
bonusIf you’ve been paying attention, you’ve no doubt seen a spike in mental health issues over the last year. Most reasons are pretty obvious, of course, but there are other aspects you might not have considered. So I wanted to think out loud about what these are, how they work, and what we can do to mitigate the symptoms. In some ways, a mental health crisis is already here, and if we don’t talk about it--if we don’t unplug from our echo chambers and truly connect with other people--the situation is only going to get worse. S1 Ep 300James Nestor - Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art
For our 300th episode, I wanted to cover something so common we take it for granted, and so critical we can’t live without it: breathing. Most of the time, it’s something we do unconsciously, but how we breathe and what we’re taking in are critical. We don’t really give it a lot of thought, but James Nestor is dedicated to changing that. When he and I sat down to talk about the nature of breath, the amount of info and insight he had blew. me. away. We cover the bleeding edge of science on breathing. From the subtle (but chronic) effects of Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome, Jame’s personal experience of how we evolved for nasal breathing (not mouth breathing), to some easy ways you can optimize your own breathing technique. As always, share your takeaways with me! Leave a rating or review! James Nestor is an author and journalist who has written for Scientific American, Outside, The New York Times, The Atlantic, and more. His latest book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, was released May 26, 2020 by Riverhead/Penguin Random House. Breath was an instant New York Times bestseller and will be translated into more than 15 languages in 2021. Nestor’s first book, Deep: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What the Ocean Tells Us About Ourselves, was published in 2014 and was a finalist for the 2015 PEN/ESPN Award For Literary Sports Writing, an Amazon Best Science Book of 2014, and more. Nestor has appeared on dozens of national television shows, including ABC's Nightline and CBS Morning News, and on NPR. He lives and breathes in San Francisco. Weekly Training: Transition Fatigue
bonusThis week I wanted to cover something a ton of people are experiencing right now: transition fatigue. Each of us has a natural limit on how much change we can take at once. When we hit that limit, issues can start cropping up that’ll impact you and your relationships in a pretty big way. In my opinion, transition fatigue isn’t talked about enough, so I wanted to cover it here and in my weekly newsletter. Listen in for exactly what transition fatigue is, how it might be affecting you, and steps you can take to recover from it. S1 Ep 299Dr. Kristen Mark - Desire Discrepancy, How Covid Shaped Sexual Behavior, and the Science of Sexual Satisfaction
Sex is (obviously) a big deal for a lot of us, and it has a huge impact on a relationship. So as someone who works hard at providing people tools and perspectives on lasting, genuine wellbeing, it’s SO important to me that we get the best ideas, the real science, and the most beneficial tactics to use in regards to sex. To that end, I brought on Michaela Boehm in June, Dr. Lori Brotto two weeks before, and this week, Dr. Kristen Mark. We had a deep dive into what people in relationships can do to elevate their communication, sexual satisfaction, and tackle “desire discrepancy”. I encourage you to listen in with your partner. There’s a lot of good stuff in here. Let me know your take! Leave a rating and review or connect with on Insta @mantalks. Kristen Mark, PhD, MPH is a sex and relationships researcher, educator, and therapist. She has spent the past 8 years at the University of Kentucky as a faculty member in health promotion and Director of the Sexual Health Promotion Lab. She is currently transitioning to the University of Minnesota Medical School as the Joycelyn Elders Endowed Chair for Sexual Health Education and Professor in Family Medicine and Community Health. She is affiliate faculty at the Kinsey Institute. Her research program centers around sexual well-being, specifically the maintenance of sexual and relationship satisfaction and sexual desire in long-term relationships, sexual function and dysfunction, and sexual desire discrepancy. She also engages in community advocacy around inclusive comprehensive sexual health education that integrates messages of sexual pleasure. Dr. Mark holds degrees in psychology, family science, biostatistics, and public health and her research and therapeutic approaches are as interdisciplinary as her training. She consistently has her scientific research published in the top journals in sexual health and has presented her work at hundreds of conferences nationally and internationally. Additionally, Dr. Mark is regularly relied upon as an expert to digest sex and relationship science to print, radio, and television media. Weekly Training: You Ask, I Answer (Q&A)
bonusI recently did an AMA on Instagram, and I was blown away by the response! I deeply appreciate your engagement, and so for this week’s mini-episode, I wanted to answer as many as I could with as much value as possible. There were hundreds of questions, so I clearly won’t be able to cover all of them in under twenty minutes, but keep your eyes peeled. I and my team wrote them all down, and we’ll be going more in-depth on some in the future! Thank you for listening, and if you like what you hear, leave a rating, review, or hit me up on Instagram @mantalks. S1 Ep 298Ian Urbina - The Outlaw Ocean
Piracy. Gunrunning. Human trafficking. The harvest of endangered animals. Vigilantes pursuing justice. All happening in a world most of us know nothing about: the open ocean. This week, I sat down with Ian Urbina for an episode unique in the ManTalks canon. It’s my belief that cultivating or embodying the healthy masculine (or feminine) has to involve both inner and outer work, and a big part of outer work is being aware of what’s happening in--or happening to--the world. Ian’s expertise, passion, and concern for this darker corner of human life was readily apparent to me. It was an honor to talk to him. Ian Urbina, a former investigative reporter for the New York Times, is the director of The Outlaw Ocean Project, a non-profit journalism organization based in Washington, D.C., that focuses on reporting about environmental and human rights crimes at sea. Listen in to hear about what it was like to chase one of INTERPOL’s most wanted ships, how “labor brokers” kidnap men (and boys) to work on ships, and how shame and pride perpetuate the dangers present on the high seas. Share your takeaways with me! Weekly Training: Should You Break Up With Her
bonusMen, brace for some real talk. I’m asked this question a lot, and it can seem like a straightforward problem to tackle. At first. Any time it involves another person, it’s a big decision, and you owe it to both yourself and the person you’re with to really dig deep and ask the hard questions.Listen in to hear what I ask back and what you need to ask yourself.
