69 - Orgy University (2013)

E

We're back! And what makes more sense than taking a long break, coming back and talking about porn. Seriously. For episode 69 we watched ORGY UNIVERSITY (Carrie XXX Porn Parody). This should go without saying but this gets explicit. More than usual. We also talk about 9/11 more than usual. 68 - Nightmares & Dreamscapes Ep 1, "Battlefield" (2006) w/ Mark Henely

E

As we kick off our soon-to-be-postponed series on NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES, we're joined by friend of the show Mark Henely for what we're shocked to learn is his third appearance on King Me. Mark's with us to discuss the episode "Battleground" wherein William Hurt silently fights toys for one hour's time. However, our guest is far more interested in trying to sic our hoards of rabid fans on himself by giving out his address. There are hoards of you folks, right? 65 - Kingdom Hospital (2004) Part 2

E

We’re going back to the Kingdom for another week of McCarthyism—Andrew McCarthyism, that is—and red scares—blood red scares, that is. In the back half of Kingdom Hospital, the Stephen King-Lars Von Trier team-up that lasted one season, the loose ends that should be tied up just end up fraying further, but it all gets explained away with some time-travel/multiverse stuff. Also, Dan apologizes for his intro. 63 - Riding the Bullet (2004)

E

HEY EVERYONE! The audio problems on this episode have been fixed. The content quality is unfortunately the same. So if you didn't listen before check it out. If you did listen before, thank you. You're a real trooper. This week we watched RIDING THE BULLET. This was actually a lot better than we thought it would be. It's all about death and how you deal with it as you age and mature. This movie didn't have too many scares but there are some really good creepy performances. And we have fun with the music of the 60's. 62 - Salem's Lot (2004)

E

Vampires! This week we watched SALEM'S LOT from 2004. Starring Rob Lowe, Donald Sutherland (as Santa), and some other people. The original Salem's Lot was long, slow and boring. A Return to Salem's Lot was a great time at the cinema. This falls somewhere in between. While it's not as fun as RTSL, it does have some real scares. Enjoy! 61 - Secret Window (2004)

E

This is not my beautiful house. This is not my beautiful wife. This IS my steaming bowl of corn. This week on King Me we watched a movie about a writer who's alter ego comes to life to torment him and murder the people around him. No, not The Dark Half. This week we watched SECRET WINDOW. We get into adult braces, John Turturro's one accent, and our favorite topic, corn. 60 - The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer (2003)

E

Oh man. This was probably the hardest one we've done so far. There's very little going on in this weeks movie, THE DIARY OF ELLEN RIMBAUER. If you saw Rose Red and thought to yourself, "I wish all these flashback scene were compiled into it's own movie without adding anything new", you're in luck. It's crazy that this even got made. But it's ok cause we talk about Toto's Africa for quite a bit. 59 - Dreamcatcher (2003) w/ Melissa Jouben

E

I Duddits! This week we're joined by Melissa Jouben to talk about the insane DREAMCATCHER. This is based on a book that Stephen king himself doesn't like. There's a group of kids with powers and aliens that come out of peoples butts and everyone farts real loud and everyone loves Mighty Mouse and Scooby Doo. This movie is just a run on sentence by an 8 year old from 1965. 58 - Carrie (2002)

E

We're going back to our roots for the first of two Carrie remakes coming up. This Carrie from 2002 is a TV movie that seemingly goes out of its way to flatten the symbolism of the original--which is weird, considering it's written by Bryan Fuller of American Gods, Pushing Daisies, and Hannibal fame. (Fucking Hannibal!) To its credit, TV Carrie avoids the mistake Brian De Palma made of spinning the camera around and spending, like, three hours on unfunny teen boys trying on tuxedos. 56 - Mangler 2 (2002) w/ JC Hendricks

E

This ain't your grandpa's mangler. This week we're joined by JC HENDRICKS to talk about the MANGLER 2. This really is one of the dumbest movies we've watched but it was a lot of fun to talk about. Dan thinks it's right up there with Shawshank as being one of the best King movies ever. With off screen kills and plot points that go nowhere, this truly is a Mangler for the ages. We got shirts! 55 - Rose Red (2002)

E

Another goddamn miniseries. Rose Red is the story of a house that is mean. If you try to go in it, you'll get some bees on you. We follow a ragtag team of psychic misfits, one of whom is Emily Deschanel, as they try to help a professor preserve her academic integrity by engaging in a ghost hunt. We learned a lot from this one--most notably, that Gavin Belson from Silicon Valley used to be fat. ALSO IN THIS EPISODE: Fun with Rimbauer We got shirts! POP OF THE KING - Michael Jackson's Ghosts (1997)

E

As suggested by listener & patreon donor Tyto Pollens, this week is a special detour episode that we're calling POP OF THE KING. In 1997, Stephen King teamed up with his long-time film collaborator Mick Garris--as well as the King of Pop, Michael Jackson--to write an extremely autobiographical haunted house story for Jackson to star in. Special effects legend Stan Winston directs Jackson as he plays dual roles and makes many uncomfortable, overt references to the child abuse allegations that defined public perception of Michael Jackson in the 1990s. The plot eventually takes a back seat in favor of a sort of Six Flags Hallowen show-style extended dance sequence, which is admittedly kinda fun. Still though. Yikes. 54 - Children of the Corn: Revelation (2001)

E

We're seven Children of the Corn movies deep, and once more we find ourselves lacking the guidance of our resident Corn Kidz expert, Sean Thomason. But what we lack in guests, we more than make up for in strippers who get dressed for work at home. Also in this episode: a brief overview of the TV show Orange County Choppers. 53 - Hearts in Atlantis (2001)

E

GET ME MOONFACE! That's right: it's David Morse back up in it with HEARTS IN ATLANTIS. He's not actually in it all that much but it's nice to see his big face. This movie is on the boring side of King movies so we have a hard time staying on topic. But that's fun right? Also Rob is baffled by the most basic hair and makeup disguise. 52 - The Green Mile (1999)

E

This week we watched THE GREEN MILE and we cried and cried. Hanks delivers a fantastic performance both inside and outside of the bedroom. 51 - Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return (1999) w/ Sean Thomason

E

The sixth installment in the CHILDREN OF THE CORN franchise returns the series to its roots...sort of? Inasmuch as a character from the first one is back? Other than that, this one's about as faithful as the other four sequels. There's a prophecy now, it's cool to be an adult, and there's ZERO corn. But there's one other constant: our resident Corn Kidz expert, RiffTrax's Sean Thomason, is [Aerosmith voice] BACK! 50 - Sometimes They Come Back...For More

E

There's no accounting for why SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK spawned two sequels, and there's certainly no explaining why the third installment, SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK...FOR MORE, is a knockoff of John Carpenter's THE THING. But here we are. Something of a spiritual sequel, SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK...FOR MORE takes into account the source material of the first two, and then just mostly ignores it. Now the devil's brother is involved. I don't know, man. ALSO IN THIS EPISODE: Acclaimed film actor Javier Bardem reallllly stops by the studio. 46 - Trucks (1997)

E

They say that horror films reflect the anxiety of the time, and if that's true, people in 1997 must have hated poisonous gas. TRUCKS is the second adaptation of the Stephen King short story that also served as the foundation of the surprisingly uneventful MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE. We'll do a bit of comparison, while also giving TRUCKS its due for being totally unwatchable in its own right. The saving grace? A precocious young hazmat suit. 45 - Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror (1997) w/ Sean Thomason

E

We're on our fifth round of Corn Kid and we're starting to get fatigued. We are once again joined by Rifftrax writer and King Me's resident Corn Kid scholar Sean Thomason to discuss what we all hoped would be a wild romp, but ended up just being five minutes of David Carradine being a beautiful lunatic. That is, until Sean's wifi cuts out three times. What a beautiful mess. HILL OF THE KING - 1 - Horns (2013)

E

We're taking a slight detour to break up the monotony of shoestring budget Stephen King adaptations from the late '90s, and exploring the King family tree. Stephen King's son, Joe Hill, is a novelist and acclaimed comic book writer in his own right, and in 2013 his novel HORNS was adapted for film. An attempt at an Americanized magical realism, HORNS is packed with supernatural goings-on, religious imagery, and flimsy female characters. It is, undeniably, something. Also in this episode: Dan is finally the one who knows the plot points of the movie. 44 - The Night Flier (1997) w/ JC Hendricks

E

Friend of the show and former guest JC Hendricks joins us as we try to justify to ourselves the watching of this movie and guzzle La Croix like vampeers guzzle blood. Miguel Ferrer stars as Richard Dees, a hard-boiled reporter for a Weekly World News-type publication who for some reason has journalistic integrity sometimes, and also has a plane. Then there's a vampire for a while. 43 - The Shining (1997)

E

No, not THAT The Shining. That was The Shining. This is STEPHEN KING'S The Shining. Stephen King was famously displeased with Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of his book about hotels and the souls they devour. Apparently King felt that 17 years was all it took for the public to forget one of the most beloved horror films of all time, and set about EPing a miniseries adaptation of his classic novel. Directed by Mick Garris, and starring Steven Weber and Rebecca de Mornay as Jack and Wendy Torrence, Stephen King's The Shining is a trip into the valley of the uncanny and then the mountain of exposition. Also in this episode: a very earnest, very prolonged bath hag discussion. 42 - Quicksilver Highway (1997)

E

The first plot twist of Quicksilver Highway is learning that there's a movie called Quicksilver Highway. Another "horror titan" team-up anthology, Quicksilver Highway takes stories from both Stephen King and Clive The Hellraiser Guy Barker. For the second time in a short time, Mick Garris is steering the ship to tell the story of the bizarrely named Aaron Quicksilver (Christopher Lloyd), who then in turn tells the stories of America's dark underbelly. His words, not ours. It's cartoony horror from start to finish, and it's barely fine. Also in this episode: Javier Bardem is back to ring in the new year. 41 - The Best of 2016

E

We take a look back at the first year of King Me (and try to figure out if auld acquaintance should be forgot), counting down our Dirty Doz' of best movies we've covered thus far. Plus the best miniseries. Plus the best anthology. We take time to make fun of Adrian Brody's weird rasta character from SNL though. 40 - Thinner (1996) w/ Taylor Allen

E

When comedian/host of Callin' the Shots Taylor Allen chose to come on the show for the THINNER episode, he might have known the movie itself would be good, but he probably didn't know how badly Rob and Dan needed it after the past few weeks of schlock. Thinner is everything we're looking for in a Stephen King movie: scenery-chewing performances, the state of Maine, a Stephen King cameo, and no bloated mythology that tries to justify the movie's existence. Just some good old-fashioned *Romani* hexing and a cheap-ass fat suit. Also in this episode: we brought pie. 39 - Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering (1996) w/ Sean Thomason

E

The '90s was truly a boom era from corn horror, and so our resident Corn Kid expert Sean Thomason (Rifftracks) is back for the second time in a month to learn us a thing or two about these damned kids. As the Corn Kidz franchise expands, so does the scope and vagueness of Corn Kid properties and abilities. Naomi Watts stars as a fake doctor being mentored by another fake sleepover doctor in this straight-to-video romp. Also in this episode: water is bugs now. 38 - Sometimes They Come Back...Again (1996)

E

SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK...AGAIN marks round three of two of our favorite King Tropes--evil greasers and hot rod lawnmowers--as well a cornucopia of others. And without a guest around to make them feel like there's any accountability for time or effort (no offense, King Me listeners), Rob and Dan embark on a free-wheelin' romp through a direct-to-video sequel of a made-for-TV movie. But if you're worried we won't find time to talk about Kirk Cameron's weird religiousness, don't worry. We find like five uninterrupted minutes for that. Also in this episode: Snells, demons with lil' tiny butts, and recording artist Ben E. King stops by the studio. 37 - Lawnmower Man 2: Jobe's War (1996) w/ Melissa Jouben & JC Hendricks

E

Beyond cyberspace, there are green screens. Depending on who you ask, this movie is either called LAWNMOWER MAN 2: BEYOND CYBERSPACE or LAWNMOWER MAN 2: JOBE'S WAR. We're joined by comedian Melissa Jouben (Warm Things Comedy, Pop-Break.com) and comedian/friend of the show JC Hendricks to pick our favorite title, and to try to get even a tenuous grasp on this deeply perplexing movie. Also in this episode: human jellies, post-coital chicken wings, security guard dirt humiliation. 36 - Children of the Corn 3: Urban Harvest (1995) w/ Sean Thomason

E

Our resident Corn Kid expert Sean Thomas (Rifftrax) has returned from his sabbatical to help us understand the third installment in the Children of the Corn franchise, Children of the Corn 3: Urban Harvest. Sadly, Dan might have sent him the wrong link to the movie, but he's happy to discuss what he watched instead. And if you're asking yourself if Sean has an on-air meltdown, the answer, my dude, is yes. Also in this episode: the politics of drinking at work, a new "profile" segment, and nunchuck hoodlums. 35 - The Langoliers (1995)

E

What if I told you that all of reality is just snacks for meatballs? THE LANGOLIERS is a 1995 miniseries starring no one, but Bronson Pinchot is in it, screaming relentlessly. It's three hours long, and nothing happens. At one point a soda is flat, but then it's not anymore, and that's honestly almost everything. Join us, won't you? 34 - Dolores Claiborne (1995) w/ Ryan Sandoval

E

The bone-chilling death of an old woman begins DOLORES CLAIBORNE, setting the stage for two hours of pure, nonstop character development. Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Christopher Plummer star in a movie that's truly unlike any other we've covered on this show, because it features strong, complex female characters. And who better to talk about that than two men? How about THREE men? Our guest this week is TV critic and author of the hilarious satirical novel THE D.A.D.D.Y. COMPLEX, Ryan Sandoval. We three lads tackle a townie profile, the geography of Upper Buttcrack, and a whoooooooole lot of domestic issues. Also in this episode: pap schmears. 33 - The Mangler (1995) w/ JC Hendricks

E

What happens when Robert Englund, Tobe Hooper, and (to a much lesser extent) Stephen King team up to make a film? Somehow, not that much. Much of THE MANGLER is set in an industrial laundry factory, and that's about as exciting as it gets. Luckily, comedian/friend of the show JC Hendricks returns to help tackle THE MANGLER, and he's got reams of notes. Also in this episode: Hard Left Turns, Hard Right Turns.
