32 - The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

E

Too much Morgan Freeman voice, we agree. Much like the rest of society, we love Frank Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption. And yet, we start the episode by talking about Dr. Strange and The Green Mile. Also in this episode: bottles of suds, cartoon skunks, and the pilot of our new show Episode I On One Get weekly episodes and request movies on our Patreon: https://patreon.com/kingmepod Email us at: [email protected] Letterboxd https://letterboxd.com/kingmepod/ Subscribe/rate/review on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/king-me/id1071620322?mt=2 Subscribe & rate on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5fWr5bSjFLtCDRda6oCeIW?si=84c3c8b55a294467

31 - The Stand (1994)

E

Most Stephen King fans agree that his post-apocalyptic epic novel THE STAND is his magnum opus. We will not be discussing that, as we are forbidden from doing so. Instead, we're parsing through all six hours of the miniseries that aired in 1994 and stars Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, and Bill Fagerbakke (the voice of Patrick Star on Nickelodeon's SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS). But the true star of this movie is stereotypes we can't believe were acceptable only twenty years ago. Also in this episode: Rob self-medicates, and Dan dreams of mattresses smaller than a minifridge. 30 - Needful Things (1993) w/ Brock Wilbur

E

The voice of Brock Wilbur stops by for a loving discussion of this hand-picked sorta-Faustian, sorta-monkey's paw, sorta-Rolling Stones classic. NEEDFUL THINGS is the story of what happens when the devil comes to Castle Rock (he opens an antique shop). Also in this episode: how to spot a forgery, and the devil's nickname for Jesus becomes King Me canon. You can follow Brock on twitter @brockwilbur Check out his stand up albums, NIGHTMARE FUEL, 28 YEARS LATER, and CRIME TRAVEL on iTunes. 29 - The Tommyknockers (1993)

E

Shoot a pickle? THE TOMMYKNOCKERS was originally aired in 1993 as a two-part miniseries, but we're swilling it all down at once like a fine gin and tonic (hold the tonic). Both parts were adapted by Stephen King himself from the novel of same name, and it shows in the signature broad comedic beats throughout--including one of the best pratfalls ever put on film. It's a weird one, though. Traci Lords plays the villain and seduces a cop named Jingles, but not before a police officer is murdered by the hundreds of dolls she keeps on display at the station. Also in this episode: An episode-long Townie Profile, references to Earwolf podcasts, NO MORE TALKING HEADS PARODIES Get weekly episodes and request movies on our Patreon: https://patreon.com/kingmepod Email us at: [email protected] Letterboxd https://letterboxd.com/kingmepod/ Subscribe/rate/review on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/king-me/id1071620322?mt=2 Subscribe & rate on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5fWr5bSjFLtCDRda6oCeIW?si=84c3c8b55a294467

28 - The Dark Half (1993) w/ Mike Levine

E

Mike Levine, author of ALL THE FEELINGS: HELLA DRAMATIC MONOLOGUES FOR THESPIANS OF A TEEN AGE (Devastator Press), stops by to discuss the 1993 George Romero-Stephen King team-up THE DARK HALF. More accurately, Rob and Dan stop by to visit Mike at Sarah Lawrence College. After Dan finishes mispronouncing "Levine," we get into the how the DARK HALF is basically a more on-the-nose version of MISERY's addiction tale, and a weird digression in George Romero's oeuvre. Then we fawn over the alpha-townie Homer Gamash. Also in this episode: Head Krangs, barfing rookie cops, and the finer points of bird lore. 27 - Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice (1992)

E

CORN KIDZ BABY We are so excited to have arrived back in Gatlin, Nebraska, at the second installment in the unlikely franchise of CHILDREN OF THE CORN movies. Although we're without our resident corn kid expert, Sean Thomason, we'll do our best to figure out what makes these little maize faces tick. Between its weird allusions to much better movies and wheelchair-bound mannequins fucking up bingo games, CHILDREN OF THE CORN II: THE FINAL SACRIFICE is a sequel that rivals the likes of PET SEMATARY 2 and A RETURN TO SALEM'S LOT. Also in this episode: Dan spends about as much time talking about MOULIN ROUGE and KANGAROO JACK he does CORN KIDZ 2, Rob debuts his new song "A Hard Day's Night," Javier Bardem drops in to teach proper pronunciation in the Spanish language, aka Spanish. 26 - Pet Sematary 2 (1992) w/ Tony Wilson

E

We're back, baby! And we're joined by Tony Wilson as he returns to discuss the movie he thought was Pet Sematary One: Pet Sematary Two. Tony retells his harrowing Sizzler story, and maybe finds some closure, as we break down this good-ass movie. Sure it's got its flaws, like wild tonal inconsistencies, and it's yet another obvious candidate for Oh That Hurts My Parts, but we love it. We love it a lot. Also in this episode: A David Byrne deep cut intro, Eddie Furlong performs his signature scream "The Furlong Curdler," all cats are girls, and all dogs are boys. Except for the one dog that has titties. That dog is maybe a girl. 25 - Sleepwalkers (1992) w/ Jack Steiger

E

We're keeping it in the family this week as stand up comedian/co-host of INTRODUCING...THE FIRST APPEARANCE PODCAST Jack Steiger joins us to talk about a film that also keeps it in the family. SLEEPWALKERS (1992) is the story of two big wet vampire cat people--possibly the last of their kind--who need to suck out virgin sparkles to stay alive. They have the power to disguise themselves, automobiles, and ostensibly nothing else. Also in this episode: Jack really doesn't want to tell us how to run our show. 24 - The Lawnmower Man (1992) w/ JC Hendricks

E

THE LAWNMOWER MAN (1992) stars Pierce Brosnan as Larry Angelo, a scientist and recently widowed chimp-friend of five years who's studying the extremely made-up rules of virtual reality technology. His research seems to have plateaued--until he meets Jobe (Jeff Fahey), the cartoonish portrayal of a "simple" man, who is the perfect candidate to receive his brain juice injections. Everything seems to going well--until Uncle Hank substitutes to the good brain juice for the bad brain juice. A classic brain juice swap. Stand up comedian J.C. Hendricks joins us in-studio to try to unpack this THE LAWNMOWER MAN, a movie that swings for the fences while seemingly spitefully refusing to do any kind of research into how virtual reality works. We had so much fun that we almost made it a two-parter, but that's asking a lot of you, the listener. Also in this episode: The '90s finally begin, the Vienna Boys Choir performs, Drivetime King Tropes, and zero Slimers. 23 - Golden Years (1991) w/ Mark Henely

E

Host of INTRODUCING...THE FIRST APPEARANCE PODCAST Mark Henely joins us in studio (!) this week. If you don't remember 1991's GOLDEN YEARS, that's not weird. Besides the David Bowie theme song of same name, there's really not much to latch onto in this seven-part miniseries. The main character is weirdly named Harlan Williams, Felicity Huffman does a proto-Scully, and Ed Lauter's face takes up his whole head. That's it. Also in this episode: week two of a Talking Heads parody intro, the formal establishment of a segment where we gripe about how Slimer (and Lady Slimer) aren't in the movie, and the triumphant return of a certain rugged Spaniard. 22 - Sometimes They Come Back (1991)

E

A veritable cornucopia of King Tropes, the 1991 TV movie SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK tells the story of beige rage monster Jim Norman (Tim Matheson) as he goes toe-to-toe with three dead teenagers. Also in this episode: several dogs, and Rob takes umbrage with this film's utter lack of a certain green hot dog fiend. 21 - Misery (1990)

E

This episode is an absolute lovefest. Rob Reiner goes 2/2 for with Stephen King adaptations with his tight suspense classic starring James Caan and Kathy Bates in her breakout role. Rob and Dan talk about MISERY as an addiction allegory and as an abuse narrative, but also it's funny. Also in this episode: we say "pig" like fifteen times and it's not a sex thing. 20 - It (1990) w/ Amanda Meadows & Geoffrey Golden

E

Come float with us as we explore the confused and confusing world of Stephen King’s IT, starring Tim Curry and a bunch of other schmucks, but who cares about them? They’re not Tim Curry. How could we possibly be expected to learn their names? Dan has some trouble introducing our guests, so let’s try to get it right here: together, Amanda Meadows and Geoffrey Golden are the Editors of The Devastator. Amanda is also a writer of books, her most recent of which is called WE DON’T THINK YOU’RE RACIST, where people of color assure white readers that they’re doing alright. Geoffrey writes Disney Princess comics and hosts the Meltdown Comics podcast TWO PACKS A WEEK, where he and a guest go through a pack of non-sports trading cards. 18 - Tales From The Darkside: The Movie (1990) w/ Alex Firer

E

Alex Firer (The Onion News Network, Splitsider, The Devastator) joins Rob and Dan to talk TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE, directed by John Harrison; written by Stephen King, Michael McDowell, Arthur Conan Doyle, and George Romero; and starring Christian Slater, Debbie Harry, Matthew Lawrence, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, David Johansen, Rae Dawn Chong, and motherfucking James Remar. 17 - Pet Sematary (1990) w/ Tony Wilson

E

This week we're joined by Tony Wilson, creator of the iOS game MAIM STREET, to talk about PET SEMATARY. PET SEMATARY is directed by Mary Lambert (not from the Macklemore song), and stars Fred Gwynne (NOT Ed Wynn, like Dan sort of says at the top) and some other schmucks. Also in this episode: everyone takes a turn doing a Fred Gwynne voice, Dan realizes he loves fire, and Rob performs a George Dalton sneak attack. Do you like Tony? Do you think he's handsome? 16 - The Running Man (1987)

E

Remember last week when we were like, "We'll have one of two exciting guests?" We got one, and recorded with him not long before this episode dropped. When we went to edit the file, we found it had been all jacked up by computer violence far beyond our comprehension, and at that point it was too short notice to try to book our other exciting guest (who will still be joining us for another episode). But you'll hear all about it in gratuitous detail. We're also talking about THE RUNNING MAN (1987), our first story by Stephen King under his pseudonym, Richard Bachmann. This screenplay was written by '80s action master Stephen DeSouza (of DIE HARD and COMMANDO fame) and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Richard Dawson, with feature parts from Jesse Ventura, Mick Fleetwood, and Dweezil Zappa. We love this movie, even if our hearts are broken, although we're kind of excited that we now have a "lost episode." 15 - A Return To Salem's Lot (1987)

E

A RETURN TO SALEM'S LOT, directed by Larry Cohen, is a bad movie. It's a really bad movie. The opening scene is set in the rainforest, and by the end of it an elderly man is hunting Nazis. Its only tie to Stephen King is that its characters are "based on characters created by Stephen King." Beyond that, King had zero involvement. Also in this episode: child marriages and Chico Marx. 14 - Creepshow 2 (1987)

E

Stephen King and George Romero team up once again for CREEPSHOW 2. This time around, King wrote the stories, Romero adapted them for the screenplay, and Michael Gornick directs. They also trim down to three stories instead of the five of the first CREEPSHOW film. One of them is really good, one is pretty racist, and the third is such a misfire that you'll be sure you're seeing things (bitch). Also in this episode: we design a t-shirt, furries are put on blast, and Dan gets scared. MINI EPISODE #1: The Trailer For CELL (2016)

E

From master of horror Stephen King comes a harrowing new tale of what happens when people are zombies because cell phones is people. The 1408 power-duo, John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, are reunited to shoot popcorn junkies in the head in CELL, which will be in theaters soon. Rob and Dan called an emergency meeting to review the trailer. They also ordered pizza. 13 - Stand By Me (1986)

E

Cheers, leechdicks! We've finally arrived at STAND BY ME, the film debut of Connie Palermo, the chick who won't even let disgusting teenage greaser boys do anything more than feel her tits. STAND BY ME stars Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell. And Keifer Sutherland. And John Cusack. And then also Rob Reiner directed it. Also in this episode: we have our first disagreement about the degree to which Chris Chambers and Gordie Lachance are gay for each other, but since Dan writes the episode descriptions, he's going to call it definitively and say that they were both feelin it so hard. Sorry Rob, but these are two boys who were feelin it. Moreover, they were feelin it so hard. 12 - Maximum Overdrive (1986)

E

MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE is a cocaine film written and directed by Stephen King and cocaine. It stars Emilio Estevez and features the drug cocaine. The whole movie is scored by AC/DC, who was no doubt high on cocaine at the time. Also in this episode: Rob holds the show hostage with a multitude of new soundboard drops, and the boys spend a minute trying to find Bruce Willis's music on Spotify. 11 - Silver Bullet (1985)

E

This is it. This is the entire reason we started doing this show. 1985's SILVER BULLET stars Gary Busey as the alcoholic hero Uncle Red, and Corey Haim as the fidgety-legged paraplegic Marty Coslaw, in a harrowing tale of the big fair getting canceled. 10 - Cat's Eye (1985)

E

It's week two of a Drew Barrymore double-header as we talk about CAT'S EYE, an anthology film that inexplicably ties its three stories together with The Police's "Every Breath You Take." CAT'S EYE is written by Stephen King and directed by King-iverse alumnus Lewis Teague (CUJO). Also in this episode: Rob and Dan trot out their new morning zoo format, Two Douchebags In The Morning, then Dan rebrands as Mike Milligan from FARGO season 2. 9 - Firestarter (1984)

E

Drew Barrymore, George C. Scott, and Art Carney team up at long last for 1984's FIRESTARTER. This movie is ripe with Stephen King tropes, casual racism, and exactly one slow-moving golf cart. Our cross-over episode with the nonexistent John Carpenter podcast WALL TO WALL CARPENTER. Christine is the harrowing story of a big-dicked nerd who wants to fuck a vintage car. Rob and Dan agree that this is a very good movie, and that it's very silly movie. (NOTE: the sound is not optimal. We apologize. Good sound will return next week.) 5 - Cujo (1983)

E

Cujo is a movie about a boy and his dog. This is the first episode we recorded after we started releasing episodes, and we're very regretful about how we've neglected dumb catchphrases that could have blossomed into insufferable recurring bits. 4 - Creepshow (1982)

E

Rob is very excited to talk about our first anthology movie, for Rob is a boy who loves anthology movies, Dan gets a bit activated by a young Ed Harris, and both the boys are giddy over some Prime Time Barbeau. 3 - The Shining (1980)

E

We've got a golden goose this week. Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING is a benchmark of the horror genre, and a classic within the broader scope of cinema. So naturally, we talk about David Lynch's MULHOLLAND DRIVE. We also shit on Stephen King's problems with THE SHINING, and Dan reveals that he has part of a bachelor's degree by trying to talk about feminist and post-colonialist themes in the film. 2 - Salem's Lot (1979)

E

Our second episode is also our first miniseries, and what a poorly-paced slog it was. Arguably the most famous Stephen King vampire story, Salem's Lot is the story of what happens when you let a little boy in your window. The Snells will not be flying so freely this go-around. CARRIE is good. Improvised tuxedo fitting scenes, on the other hand? We're all going to laugh at those.
