King Me Babies: Beachworld
EGrab your your board and your best girl(s) - we’re going to Beachworld! Adapted in 2019 from a story of same name, Jackie Perez’s Beachworld tells the story of two members of a spaceship crew marooned on a desert planet. There’s only sand as far as the eye can see, and yet the sand itself seems to hold a certain…allure…yes… After the break we take a look at the source material, which was first published in Weird Tales in 1984 and then again the following year as part of the Skeleton Crew collection. King Me Babies: Here There Be Tygers
EHere there be a King Me Baby about a story written by a Baby King! No, not the Christ Child in his manger, but Stephen King circa high school. At the risk of spoiling this story, let's just say there are scarier things that can happen in a bathroom than finding a bobcat. Our adaptation from 2017 is brief without really sacrificing any plot elements...and still it feels thin. Maybe this says more about the source material than anything. Who can say. 105 - Mr. Mercedes Season Two (2018) Part 2
EHere it is. The end of season 2 of MR. MERCEDES. Brady's been in a coma controlling people through telepathy and he become a lawnmower man. These are wild swings. King Me Babies - Paranoid: A Chant
ETucked away in the middle of Stephen King's short story collection Skeleton Crew is "Paranoid: A Chant," a 100-line poem from the point of view of a narrator who has fully given over his brain to conspiracy theories involving shadowy government agencies. This poem - this poem - was adapted into a short film in 2000, and in the most 2000 way possible. Lots of browns and yellows in the color palate, and the star of the short is inexplicably in her underwear. 104 - Mr. Mercedes Season Two (2018) Part 1
ESomething is amiss in Bridgton, Ohio. Relatively straightforward cat-and-mouse detective stories are vanishing at a troubling rate. Season two of MR. MERCEDES is a departure from season one - mostly not for the better. Still, we find ourselves relishing any opportunity to get our Glees on. King Me Babies - The Moving Finger
EWhat a silly idea for a story. What if a finger was poking out of your sink drain? This week’s baby is from the series MONSTERS. It features Tom Noonan being driven insane by one little finger in the drain. It’s very silly and you know how we feel about that. 103 - Castle Rock Season One (2018) Part 2
EDoes this series pay off everything it's been setting up? Of course not. This week on King Me, it's one of the most boring things we've ever covered, CASTLE ROCK SEASON 1 PART 2. 102 - Castle Rock Season One (2018) Part 1
EThis week's episode is for the die hard King Me fans. The ones that like to hear Dan and Rob go off on every tangent. This week we're "discussing" the Hulu original series CASTLE ROCK (2018). It was a show marketed as sort of a Stephen King shared universe. What it turned out to be was a boring waste of time. This show is so boring, Rob took an edible before recording because he just wanted to feel something. Enjoy! UNLOCKED: King Me Babies - The Lawnmower Man (1987)
EOut from behind the paywall is the first episode of our new weekly series, King Me Babies, in which we discuss short films produced as part of Stephen King's Dollar Baby program. You've probably heard us mention the Dollar Babies on the show: since the late '70s, Stephen King has allowed independent filmmakers to produce non-commercial adaptations of select works of his for the low, low price of one dollar. In addition to giving us the opportunity to discuss Frank Darabont's first-ever film (available now on Patreon), we also get to reassess some stories already produced as commercial films. In the most technical sense, The Lawnmower Man is one such story. 98 - It (2017)
E27 years after we recorded our episode about IT (1990), we return to talk about IT (2017), which we feel has more heart than the original, and we’re certain has more clown drool. Plus, our old friend, the kooky old Iberian lethario himself, Javier Bardem stops by to talk in an ever-evolving accent about his recent project, COVID-diecinueve. 97 - Mr. Mercedes: Season 1 (2017) Part 2
ELike so many Brady Hartsfelds before us, we have become unraveled by thinking about Brendan Gleeson for too long. Dante Speak - 2 - Gremlins (1984) Preview
EGRAMLINS?! The second episode of our Joe Dante miniseries covers an absolute masterpiece in the canon of both of our favorite genres: kids’ horror comedy and live action cartoon genre. This ep is all about heaping praise on a perfect movie, and a bit of Old-Man-Yells-At-Cloud lamentation about the current state of the studio comedy feature film. More important than anything we have to say about the movie, though, is the introduction of our new segment: Grandpa Go To Bathroom Watch. 95 - The Dark Tower (2017)
EWe…DO talk about the book? Clearly we’ve forgotten the faces of our fathers. Given the stature of the Dark Tower series within Stephen King’s body of work (and given that these are some of the only books Dan’s ever read), we had no choice but to break the King Me Promise and discuss the source material for this one. If it helps at all, Dan seems to only barely remember them. There’s also plenty of discussion of The Dark Tower (2017) in its own right - and buddy, when I tell you we go full Jay Sherman on its ass… Get weekly episodes and request movies on our Patreon: https://patreon.com/kingmepod Email us at: [email protected] Letterboxd https://letterboxd.com/kingmepod/ Subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/king-me/id1071620322?mt=2 Subscribe & rate on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5fWr5bSjFLtCDRda6oCeIW?si=84c3c8b55a294467

Dante Speak - 1 - Piranha (1978) Preview
EThis is easily the most exciting miniseries (for us, at least) since Wall to Wall Carpenter: a review of four selections by the inimitable Joe Dante. We’re starting with Dante’s first-ish feature from 1978, PIRANHA. Despite (or, perhaps, THANKS TO??) the constraints of the Roger Corman school of filmmaking, PIRANHA features many signature Joe Dante elements: swarm of nasty little guys, Looney Tunes-esque climactic setpieces, and Dick Miller. Also coming up in this run will be Gremlins, The ‘Burbs, and Small Soldiers. 94 - The Mist (2017) Part 2
EThus concludes our analysis of a confused and confusing recapitulation of a legitimately very good movie. This series will not be…mist. Lots of low points, but at least it escalates in some weird ways. And, if nothing else, it’s very cool to see the Fisher King from The Fisher King still getting work. 93 - The Mist (2017) Part 1
EAnother from the vault. Our research team (Dan in a Sherlock Holmes hat) dates this one to around December 2021, so just know that when we say "we're back" we don't yet know we're lying. You know what else is back? That old so-and-so, the mist. And this time, the mist is bugs. And this time, we don't really like it (at least so far): they took a nice, straight-ahead Lovecraftian allegory and Lost-ified it beyond all meaning. Stray note: our editing team (Dan in a French beret) noticed that Rob says "wartch" around the 14-minute mark, so enjoy that. If you haven't already, how about you channel the love you have for your boys Dan and Rob into a five-star rating and review on the podcast platform of your choosing? 92 - Cell (2016) w/ Gavin Fischer
EFrom the Fisher King to the king, Fischer. Musician and honest-to-god brother of Rob, Gavin Fischer, joins us to unpack the 2016 techno-zombie turd CELL, starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. Great ep for fans of people talking over each other on purpose. Please enjoy the first of our time capsule episodes, which were recorded sporadically between December 2019 and April 2022 - a span of months which history will remember as “the Dark Times” because of the lack of King Me content and for NO OTHER REASON. 91 - 11.22.63 (2016) Part 2
ESorry for the delay, ancient goblins. Unfortunately, the last four episodes of 11.22.63 were each 16 hours long. This show only got odder as it went on - apparently, had JFK not died, he would have founded nationwide internment camps?? - but we were surprised to find the ending offered some sincere catharsis for Jake and Sadie, allowing Jake to return to the present completely over his divorce. 90 - 11.22.63 (2016) Part 1
EWhat if you could into a diner closet and be transported back in time to release an episode on schedule? Would you? Or would you try to stop the JFK assassination and make some friends along the way? Both of those are equally important! This week on the show we're diving into one of the most boomery boomer fantasies ever. James Franco gets into some wacky adventures as he tries to change history in 11/22/63. BONUS SHOW: Total Recall (Preview)
EThe absolute goddamn king of our hearts, Paul Verhoeven, is back in the fray. 89 - Big Driver (2014) w/ Mark Henely
EOur first LIFETIME movie! This week we're joined by the very funny MARK HENELY to discuss 2014's BIG DRIVER. Despite the movies topic this was a fun episode that gets very silly. WARNING, there is talk about sexual assault so if you don't feel like hear three white guys talk about that, we get it. 88 - Mercy (2014)
EThis week we're talking about a real dud. We're talking MERCY from 2014. It's an insanely accurate title to a movie that was painful to get through. 87 - A Good Marriage (2014) w/ Dana Brereton & Paige Baker
EThis week on the show we're talking A GOOD MARRIAGE. Joining us this week to talk about this movie are DANA BRERETON & PAIGE BAKER, our wives. This was so much fun for us and I think our wives tolerated it too! 86 - Carrie (2013) w/ Melissa Jouben
EThis week we're joined by MELISSA JOUBEN to discussed the third (we must include the porn parody) remake of the classic horror film CARRIE. Starring the miscast Chloe Grace Moretz as Carrie White, the weirdest girl in school. You know, the outcast, picked on for being awkward and no guy would ever even think of asking out because she's so repellent. Chloe Grace Moretz. It's like She's All That with a higher body count. 85 - Bag of Bones (2011)
EWe've heard of a lot of things, but the 2011 A&E miniseries BAG OF BONES? That we had not heard of! BAG OF BONES stars Pierce Brosnan as Mike Noonan, a novelist who's very busy mourning the death of his wife and becoming the legal guardian of a child he met earlier today. Over the course of the movie, and with the help of his dead wife's spirit, Mike learns important lessons about jazz and desecrating corpses. BAG OF BONES is lousy with King Tropes, and it takes on some very sensitive topics with a degree of nuance usually reserved for Pierce Brosnan's acting. To make matters worse, it's a Mick Garris joint, so it also serves as a cruel reminder of the time Dan pulled his hair. 84 - Children of the Corn Genesis (2011) w/ JC Hendricks
EThis week we're joined by friend of the show and newly inducted CORN KID, JC HENDRICKS, to discuss a prequel to the sprawling CHILDREN OF THE CORN franchise takes us back to where it all started: 20 miles outside of Gatlin, briefly, and then southeastern California. (Sorry, but it's canon now.) With total disregard for its namesake, CHILDREN OF THE CORN: GENESIS joins films like THE MANGLER REBORN and SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK...FOR MORE in the pantheon of movies that were retrofitted into existing franchises for marketing purposes. But even a bastard MANGLER sequel has more dignity than this straight-to-DVD joint, which seems to be comprised of half original footage and half sequences from other projects Dimension owned the rights to. AN ANNOUNCEMENT & The Long Good Friday (1980)
EWe have a quick announcement about the future of KING ME. THINGS ARE HAPPENING! This also includes an episode of the KING ME BONUS show from our patron. We recorded this a long time ago and figured we'd follow this big announcement with a free episode of the patreon show. 83 - Dolan's Cadillac (2009)
EWhat is there to say about Dolan's Cadillac? It's not magic. It doesn't drive the Devil around. It's kinda, just a car. But it does drive Christian "Heartthrob Jack Nicholson" Slater. This week we watch cinematic titans Christian Slater and Wes Bentley go head to head in a story about revenge and roadwork. What're you waiting for? Get in! 82 - Children of the Corn (2009) w/ Sean Thomason
EWhat if they remade the Children of the Corn only this time with a thinner plot and less likable characters? This week on KING ME, it's the triumphant return of the CORN KIDZ and our Corn Kidz expert SEAN THOMASON. There isn't a lot to like about this one. Are our hero's people we can empathize with? No. Is there a way too graphic sex scene? Yes. Nam flashbacks? You know it. 81 - The Mist (2007)
EWhat has eight tentacles and forgot to post the episode on Wednesday? This Cthulu! This week we're talking about the super bleak, Lovecraftian, THE MIST. It's like watching a bunch of King tropes trapped in a super market. That's a lot of fun. 80 - No Smoking (2007)
ENo, where the hell have YOU been? Us? Oh, WE'RE BACK! This week on KING ME we're playing it fast and loose with our first foreign film, NO SMOKING. Seriously though, we watching this movie about 5 months ago and it was barely comprehensible then. Part of the time is spent hitting all the major point in the movie. The rest is just a good time. Hope you enjoy this. It's good to be back. HAPPY HALLOWEEN. 79 - 1408 (2007)
EThis week's episode is just a series of numbers. 1408 is like if the Shining all took place in that one room. It's pretty slow. What's Cusack's deal? 78 - Creepshow 3 (2007) w/ Rob Whisman
EWe're finally done with bad tv shows. On to bad movies. This week we're joined by special guest ROB WHITMAN to talk about the bafflingly created CREEPSHOW 3. It's so bad but there's one good part, so eh. 77 - Nightmares & Dreamscapes Ep 8, "You Know They Got a Hell of a Band" (2006) w/ Ryan Barry
EThis is it! The last episode of NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES. We started from the bottom and now we're here, which is also at the bottom. This week we were joined by special guest and hilarious person Ryan Barry to talk baby boomers, kegel stones, and which Vin Diesel characters would get their asses kicked by Dana Scully. 76 - Nightmares & Dreamscapes Ep 7, "Autopsy Room Four" (2006) w/ JC Hendricks
EAnother dumb episode of NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES. But thankfully our dear friend JC Hendricks and his cavalcade of loose celebrity impressions are here to soften the blow as we discuss AUTOPSY ROOM FOUR, starring King alum Richard "Bill from IT (1990)" Thomas as a man who is either very sexy or kind of doughy, depending on what frame of the show you're watching. Who knew snake venom could cure boners. 75 - Nightmares & Dreamscapes Ep 6, "The Fifth Quarter" (2006)
