Ep 24S10E24 - HBR Minute - The Explainer: What It Takes to Be a Great Leader
In this "HBR Minute" HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover explores the recent HBR video, "The Explainer: What It Takes to Be a Great Leader." See the video and details here: https://youtu.be/LU84BFFqKvI. Video Overview: "“Level 5” leadership is about combining fierce resolve with personal humility. “Level 5” refers to the highest level in a hierarchy of executive capabilities. Leaders at the other four levels in the hierarchy can produce high degrees of success but not enough to elevate companies from mediocrity to sustained excellence. Level 5 leaders blend extreme personal humility with intense professional will. And while Level 5 leadership is not the only requirement for transforming a good company into a great one — other factors include getting the right people on the bus (and the wrong people off the bus) and creating a culture of discipline — research shows it to be essential. Good-to-great transformations don’t happen without Level 5 leaders at the helm. They just don’t." Ep 11S10E11 - Forbes Feature - How To Find A Supportive Manager Using Ten Important Questions, with Kathy Caprino
As part of our "Forbes Feature" series, spotlighting thought-provoking Forbes videos and their key takeaways, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover explores Kathy Caprino's recent Forbes video, "How To Find A Supportive Manager Using Ten Important Questions." See the video and details here: https://youtu.be/O-rMMQUbByM. Video Overview: "Leadership involves embracing new strategies and approaches that allow managers to make the positive impact they long for and become the best supervisors. Managers must overcome their own power gaps, expand their ability to learn from critique and found new ways to be more inclusive in their leadership approach. They must built more psychological safety in their organizations, and reduced the divisiveness and conflict in their ecosystems and work cultures. Sometimes, leaders struggle with their decision-making processes, unable to make a definitive decision on a direction to pursue or action to take. In many cases, their decision processes have failed them in the past—for instance, they’ve taken the wrong career route, or chosen a terrible job, or followed the wrong leader who wreaked havoc on their life. And these faulty decisions make them feel paralyzed today as to what to do next. Or they haven’t ever really trusted themselves fully so they waffle and waver when needing to put their stake in the ground and decide on a course of action. These questions will help you cut through the noise and clutter, clarify where you really stand, and help you make the correct choice for who you are, focusing on the issues you care about, and the outcomes that matter most to you in your life and work. And these questions will help you not only choose the leader you want to follow, but also determine the way you want to show up in the world. In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover shares his recent presentation as part of the UVU Provost COVID-19 Academic Seminar series. See the video here: https://youtu.be/JsXqMpWTOM4. Consider how the nature of work has shifted over the past 50 years. With increased globalization, rapid technological advancement, and a shift in economic composition, the average jobs today look very little like the average jobs 50 years ago. These jobs were largely industrial and agricultural in nature, with a relatively small percentage of service sector jobs as a proportion of the overall economy. While we do not have a crystal ball and cannot predict, with any assurance, what the next 50 years will look like, past trends provide us with clues for the coming decades as we move headlong into the 4th Industrial Revolution. This revolution will be characterized by rapid technological progress where the application of new technologies will cause sudden change. As such, it seems clear that the technology of the future is changing the business of today and tomorrow. Apart from tracing historical trends to make predictions, unexpected global events, such as COVID-19 and their impact on the world of work and the economy, must be carefully considered. Such events may accelerate current trends or establish new directions. In this presentation, I will explore: (1) An Overview of COVID-19 Global Impact on Work and Economies, (2) Technological Innovations Influencing Shifting Work Conditions, (3) COVID-19 Accelerating the Shift to a New Normal in the Workplace and the Future of Work in the Post-Pandemic World, and (4) Policy Questions and Implications Related to Economic and Employee Well-being. Known for her ability to connect with audiences at every level, Gina has inspired audiences nationwide, from Moss Adams on the West Coast to Deutsche Bank on Wall Street. Ep 18S9E18 - HBR Minute - The Most Engaged Employee in the World, with Marcus Buckingham
In this "HBR Minute" HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Westover explores Marcus Buckingham' recent HBR video, "The Most Engaged Employee in the World." See the video here and details: https://youtu.be/5gtFPVwtnTk. Overview of video: "Barbara is a composite character based on factors that make us feel engaged, and she has a pet python." Internationally renowned and celebrated, Marcus Buckingham (https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcus-buckingham) is the go-to consultant in his field, a sought-after speaker and a New York Times best-selling author. Challenging accepted and entrenched social theory, Buckingham pioneered a revolutionary concept—that people will be dramatically more effective, successful and fulfilled when they play to their strongest skills rather than attempting to improve their weaknesses. He calls his research-based technique the "strengths revolution," and his work has been proven again and again in boardrooms, seminars and individuals' lives around the world. Hailed as a visionary by corporations such as Toyota, Coca-Cola, Master Foods, Wells Fargo, Microsoft and Disney, Buckingham addresses more than 250,000 people in live audiences around the globe each year. He recently led a workshop sponsored by Oprah Winfrey for 30 talented—but unfulfilled and unhappy—women. Acting on his advice, they were able to make immediate significant and positive changes in their lives. More than 1.7 million people downloaded the three-hour workshop video, and more than 100,000 unique contributors came online to post messages when his workshop and its results were featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The extremely successful workshop became the basis for Buckingham's book Find Your Strongest Life: What the Happiest and Most Successful Women Do Differently, to be released in September 2009 by Thomas Nelson. The best-selling author of five books, his landmark titles include First, Break All the Rules (co-authored with Curt Coffman, 1999); Now, Discover Your Strengths (co-authored with Donald O. Clifton, 2001); The One Thing You Need to Know (2005); Go Put Your Strengths to Work (2007) and The Truth About You: Your Secret to Success (2008). There are more than 3.7 million copies of his books in print. Prior to founding TMBC—a company that creates strengths-based management training solutions for organizations worldwide—he used his nearly two decades of experience as a senior researcher at Gallup Organization to break through the preconceptions about achievements and get to the core of what drives success. Buckingham and Gallup developed the StrengthsFinder personality test, which identifies signature themes that help employees quantify their personal strengths in the workplace and at home. Since the StrengthsFinder debuted in 2001, more than 5 million people have accessed this important tool to discover their strengths. Marcus Buckingham has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, NBC's Today, Good Morning America and The View. He has been profiled in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Fortune, Fast Company and Harvard Business Review. A member of the Secretary of State's Advisory Committee on Leadership and Management, Marcus Buckingham graduated from Cambridge University with a master's degree in social and political science.
