Ep 6S7E6 - COVID-19, Virtual Labor, and Economic and Employee Well-being in the Future of Work
In this HCI Podcast episode, we share Dr. Westover's recent presentation at the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies Annual Conference, titled: "COVID-19, Virtual Labor, and Economic and Employee Well-being in the Future of Work." See the video here: https://youtu.be/V5u5mRV3We0. Consider how the nature of work has shifted over the past 50 years. With increased globalization, rapid technological advancement, and a shift in economic composition, the average jobs today look very little like the average jobs 50 years ago. These jobs were largely industrial and agricultural in nature, with a relatively small percentage of service sector jobs as a proportion of the overall economy. While we do not have a crystal ball and cannot predict, with any assurance, what the next 50 years will look like, past trends provide us with clues for the coming decades as we move headlong into the 4th Industrial Revolution. This revolution will be characterized by rapid technological progress where the application of new technologies will cause sudden change. As such, it seems clear that the technology of the future is changing the business of today and tomorrow. Apart from tracing historical trends to make predictions, unexpected global events, such as COVID-19 and their impact on the world of work and the economy, must be carefully considered. Such events may accelerate current trends or establish new directions. In this presentation, I will explore: (1) An Overview of COVID-19 Global Impact on Work and Economies, (2) Technological Innovations Influencing Shifting Work Conditions, (3) COVID-19 Accelerating the Shift to a New Normal in the Workplace and the Future of Work in the Post-Pandemic World, and (4) Policy Questions and Implications Related to Economic and Employee Well-being. Ep 5S7E5 - Cognitive Dominance, Dealing with Stress, and Improved Decision Making, with Dr. Mark McLaughlin
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Westover talks with Dr. Mark McLaughlin about cognitive dominance, dealing with stress, and improved decision making. See the video here: https://youtu.be/aEqjeA7RlYc. Dr. Mark McLaughlin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mmclaughlinmd/) is no stranger to fear. A practicing board-certified neurosurgeon, he has helmed countless high-stakes surgeries in which any miscalculation could mean life or death. But decades performing under immense pressure in the operating room led Dr. McLaughlin to a surprising discovery: the secret to success isn’t just conquering fear – it’s engaging with it more productively. In his new book, Cognitive Dominance: A Brain Surgeons Quest to Out-Think Fear (Black Irish Books, Nov. 5., 2019), Dr. McLaughlin shares a new framework for dealing with fear to think and perform at the top of your game during stressful situations. He combines philosophy, psychology, neuroscience and his own experiences to provide unique insight on how the brain processes fear and how we can change our mindset about this universal condition. “Cognitive Dominance is a way of thinking, a methodology, to get better and better at quickly performing at the limits of your mental and physical capacity under maximum pressure with the highest probability of success,” says Dr. McLaughlin, who first discovered the concept while teaching in military circles. Dr. McLaughlin credits Cognitive Dominance with helping himself move past the common “Fear Freak Out” problem – that “deer-in-the-headlights” feeling under pressure – that holds us all back from high performance. Ep 6S6E6 - Agile Strategy and Emerging Opportunities During the Pandemic, with Jeremy Brown
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Westover talks with Jeremy Brown about agile strategy and emerging opportunities during the pandemic. See the video here: https://youtu.be/DviJgxrQ9lk. Jeremy Brown (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeremyryanbrown/) is a veteran of strategy development and change management. He is equal parts introvert, where he totally digs analyzing complex data to spot patterns – and extrovert, where he would enjoy a day at an executive offsite facilitating strategy decisions and team alignment. One of his biggest challenges in life was finding something that equally balanced both sides – you know, getting a little high off of the extroverted dopamine, as well as the introverted acetylchlorine. Helping organizations transition to strategic agility is exactly in this sweet spot for Jeremy. After several years working in traditional strategy shops, he became frustrated at the typical lack of execution of the beautifully-designed and well-researched strategies that he helped develop. That led him to start digging into change management, adult learning, behavioral psychology, and agile methodologies – and he slowly began experimenting with these principles in his strategy work to further execution. The result? He loved the results and wanted to take it a step further. Not wanting to be constrained with the limited business model and political challenges of an established consulting company, he launched strategyNow with the mission of supporting his clients transition to an agile strategy approach and achieve 100% ROI of their strategy portfolios. Jeremy also enjoys raising two courageous daughters, traveling, and spending time in the majestic Utah outdoors.
