Contrary to conventional wisdom, it isn't just money. But it's not exactly joy either. It seems that most of us thrive by making constant progress and feeling a sense of purpose. Behavioral economist Dan Ariely presents two eye-opening experiments that reveal our unexpected and nuanced attitudes toward meaning in our work." Dan Ariely (https://www.linkedin.com/in/danariely/) is a professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University and a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight. Through his research and his (often amusing and unorthodox) experiments, he questions the forces that influence human behavior and the irrational ways in which we often all behave. Ep 25S8E25 - Inspiring TED Talks - Dare to Disagree, with Margaret Heffernan
As part of our "Inspiring TED Talks" series, spotlighting can't-miss TED Talks and their key takeaways, Dr. Westover explores Margaret Heffernan's famous 2012 TED Talk, "Dare to Disagree." See the video and details here: https://www.ted.com/talks/margaret_heffernan_dare_to_disagree. "Most people instinctively avoid conflict, but as Margaret Heffernan shows us, good disagreement is central to progress. She illustrates (sometimes counterintuitively) how the best partners aren’t echo chambers -- and how great research teams, relationships and businesses allow people to deeply disagree." When it comes to forming your dream team, the last thing you should do is surround yourself with what Heffernan calls “echo chambers” who only tell you what they think you want to hear. Mastering the art of disagreement is essential to effective leadership. Leaders must also be willing to cope with others disagreeing with them. Only through disagreement are ideas challenged. Hefferman outlines a rubric for avoiding echo chambers and allowing ourselves to experience what she calls constructive conflict. She says, “So what does that kind of constructive conflict require? Well, first of all, it requires that we find people who are very different from ourselves. That means we have to resist the neurobiological drive, which means that we really prefer people mostly like ourselves, and it means we have to seek out people with different backgrounds, different disciplines, different ways of thinking and different experience, and find ways to engage with them. That requires a lot of patience and a lot of energy.” Margaret Heffernan (https://www.linkedin.com/in/margaret-heffernan-ab5205/) has run 5 different businesses in the U.S. and U.K. All but one have been media companies. She now writes, speaks and blogs about business leadership, management, innovation and creativity. She also teaches at several business schools in the US and UK and sit on the boards of three organizations. She has published five books: The Naked Truth: A Working Woman's Manifesto about Business and What Really Matters, How She Does It and Willful Blindness, which was a finalist for the FT Best Business Book award. In 2014, A Bigger Prize was published. Reviewing it, The New York Times called it "an important call to build more collaborative, trustworthy and enduring institutions." The most recent book is Beyond Measure, a book commissioned by TED for which she has done 2 talks, seen by millions of people. She speaks at conferences and organizations around the world, from Britain's National Health Service to the police to banks, charities, schools and governments. Ep 16S8E16 - HBR Minute - The Culture of Overwork Hurts Everyone, with Robin Ely
As part of our new "HBR Minute" series, spotlighting thought-provoking HBR videos and their key takeaways, Dr. Westover explores Robin Ely's recent HBR video, "The Culture of Overwork Hurts Everyone." See the full video and all of the details here: https://youtu.be/jjRWaMCWs44. Overview of clip: "The standard work/family narrative is an outdated excuse for what holds women back. Ask people to explain why women remain so dramatically underrepresented in the senior ranks of most companies, and you will hear from the vast majority a lament that goes something like this: High-level jobs require extremely long hours, women’s devotion to family makes it impossible to put in those hours, and so their careers inevitably suffer. Not so, say the authors, who spent 18 months working with a global consulting firm that wanted to know why it had so few women in positions of power. Although virtually every employee the authors interviewed related a form of the standard explanation, the firm’s data told a different story. Women weren’t being held back because of trouble balancing work and family; men, too, suffered from that problem and nevertheless advanced. Women were held back because they were encouraged to take accommodations, such as going part-time and shifting to internally facing roles, which derailed their careers. The real culprit in women’s stalled advancement, the authors conclude, is a general culture of overwork that hurts both sexes and locks gender inequality in place. To solve this problem, they argue, we must reconsider what we’re willing to allow the workplace to demand of all employees." Robin Ely (https://www.linkedin.com/in/robinjely/) is the Diane Doerge Wilson Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. She conducts research on race and gender relations in organizations with a focus on leadership, identity, and organizational culture change. Examples of her past research include studies of men and masculinity on offshore oil platforms; the impact of racial diversity on retail bank performance; and how organizational narratives about gender, work, and family limit both men’s and women’s ability to thrive personally and professionally. Her work is published in academic journals, such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, and Academy of Management Review, and, for practitioners, in Harvard Business Review. Professor Ely is presently conducting research on organizational culture change aimed at reducing workplace inequality, strategies for women leaders to navigate gender stereotypes, and HBS alumni career and life decisions. She is founder and faculty chair of the HBS Gender Initiative whose mission is to accelerate the advancement of women leaders and promote gender and other forms of equity in business and society through research, education, and knowledge dissemination. She teaches MBA courses in leadership, diversity, and teams as well as doctoral courses in field research methods and executive education courses designed specifically for women leaders. Ep 5S8E5 - Succeeding as a Women Executive in a Male-Dominated Industry, with Laurina Esposito
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Westover talks with Laurina Esposito about succeeding as a women executive in a male-dominated industry. See the video here: https://youtu.be/bDg0K3Tr-3Y. Laurina has a background is in the fashion world, as well as in music performance- living a jet-setting life and career in the high end fashion industry prior to working with Porsche Cars, and also spent six years as a professional singer on the Las Vegas Strip. About five years ago she decided to return home to work with her dad in his business, Espo Resto, choosing to leave behind the hectic life of retail management to apply her skills in business in a more personal way. Laurina’s father is the renowned Porsche restoration expert John Esposito, so despite a career that led elsewhere initially, she grew up learning all about automobiles and specifically everything Porsche. Early memories include riding in classic speedsters/356s for trips to Taco Bell while her dad told her all the ins and outs, ups and downs about this amazing vehicle. In 2016, when she returned to work with her father, she found herself unexpectedly having to take over and run their restoration business on her own due to her fathers sudden illness (and near death!). Laurina is now the CEO of EspoResto, and has also started the organization Women in Porsche, Inc. which has nearly 30 independent chapters nationwide and internationally! Women in Porsche seeks to serve the under represented community of women in the Motorsport world, sharing the stories and connecting the women who Love, Work With and/or Drive Porsche. Her quest in this endeavor has led to connections with men and women in the Porsche family, worldwide, and proudly- has opened up doors for women to be more readily accepted and included in what is often seen as a male only pastime.
