167. When you just don't want to do it anymore with Greg from the Sunshine Coast.
In this episode I chat with Greg from the Sunny Coast in Australia. Greg was an almost every day drinker, the life of the party and probably the drunkest guy at the party. We talked about his relationship with alcohol and how at 54 years of age he decided it was time to change. That change has had a huge impact on physical health, his relationship with his wife, his daughter and even his heavy drinking buddies who have been able to open up to Greg about their own desires to ditch the booze. Greg had tried many times to quit in the past, and finally through educating himself with books and podcasts, finally something clicked and has been able to make it stick. His message is clear "never stop quitting". The books Greg mentioned are Ryan Holiday - The Daily StoicThe Body - Bill Bryson This episode was brought to you by Monday Distillery. Jade practices and instructs yoga, is an author, passionate about mindfulness, sustained mental health, and employee well-being. She was a self-confessed “piss-head” (Australian slang for heavy partier) and was convinced that she could be an “alcoholic yogi” for many years until she began her ethanol-free journey 4 years ago and developed the foundations that enabled her to start stringing together some sizable numbers. Jade turned her first AF year into a Ph.D. in addiction and self-development and had many lessons to share. Jade has a passion for traveling, she loves the great outdoors and met her husband when she was trekking to Everest Base Camp (he was her Sherpa!).https://www.jadelee.com.au/booksThis episode was brought to you by Monday Distillery. Embarrassed but also feeling buoyed by his status Sam continued on the path of self destruction until it led to dangerous and humiliating territory and he decided it was time to stop.Sam, an incredibly beautiful piano player, found that removing booze gave him the time, clarity and inspiration to spend more time writing music and he has written some hauntingly beautiful new pieces based on his journey. To check out Sam or his music check him out here.https://open.spotify.com/artist/4HD7hByFwk6X8b5pBMJOzu?si=oMQYy2VeTaK4dTzlp1jaFQInstagram @spcooperpiano This episode was brought to you by Monday Distillery. 150. From 3 bottles of wine a day, to freedom and teaching people how to talk to kids about alcohol with Isabella Ferguson
A must listen to for all parents of teenagers. In this episode I catch up with coach Isabella Furgeson. Growing up in Canberra in the 80's. Isabella found that alcohol gave her a voice, that sense of confidence turned into serious binge drinking. Fast forward to motherhood, the binge drinking continued to the point where Isabella found herself becoming the drunkest person at gatherings and parties. As the shame increased so did her drinking, where she began hiding her drinking from her husband. One particular night Isabella got so drunk she had to be rushed to hospital which was essentially her rock bottom, from there she detoxed and went into rehab. We chat about untangling your beliefs about yourself, how trying moderation led to more sneaking after rehab. Eventually Isabella found This Naked Mind course and was able to kick the habit, she know coaches others in sobriety and runs courses on How To Talk To Your Kids About Alcohol. To reach out to Isabella follow the link below.https://isabellaferguson.com.auhttp://kidsandalcohol.comhttps://resources.isabellaferguson.com.au/kidsandalcoholsalesInsta: @letstalkalcoholaustraliaResearch links:https://darta.net.auhttps://fare.org.auThe book I mentioned in the episode was Hold Onto Your Kids by Dr Gabor MateThis episode was brought to you by Monday Distillery. 149. Feeling ok on the inside with Mark Purser
In this episode I catch up with my good mate and mentor Mark Purser. We chat about how as humans all we want to do is feel ok on the inside and when we don't feel ok on the inside we usually go to externals to make us ok. But there is that sweet spot, between the stimulus and the response. When we can recognise that we are not ok, we can respond in a way that is more nurturing rather than reacting and creating more suffering. We can rely on ourselves to get us through when we have the tools from a daily practice. One good thing about removing alcohol is that we can start to recognise our emotional responses we can start to have a relationship with what is showing up rather than ignoring it or pushing it away. It can be an opportunity for deep healing.Mark and I have a retreat in Bali coming up where we will be diving deep into self healing and nurturing. 145. The undeniable life changing freedom of waking up without shame and regret with Lisa from Sydney
How many times do we have to wake up hating ourselves? Feeling incongruent, out of alignment with our values, ashamed, worried, embarrassed, your body demanding attention "please stop poisoning me"... Yet we ignore it, blame ourselves, tell ourselves we will learn to be better and repeat the exact same cycle a few days or weeks later? I know I did and so did this wonderful guest Lisa. Lisa and I have been working together for 12 months or so and she is the epitome of digging deep and doing the work. A true example of how it's not always easy, that sobriety will challenge you, uncover things about yourself you didn't know where there and make you deal head on with raw emotions but the flip-side is true freedom. This episode was brought to you by Monday Distillery. Luke says authentic change begins with silence, stillness, and the courage to look inward. We may not like what we find there, but getting into our body is where the real work of change is done. 130. When the Sneaky Bitch comes calling with Jacinta from Sydney
In this episode I catch up with Jacinta from Sydney. Growing up with an alcohol Mum, Jacinta knows too well the dangers of alcoholism, it's destruction and how sly and powerful she can be. Like so many of us that grow up with addicted parents, even though we see the fall out we can also find ourselves in similar patterns. While their stories are very different the parallels between Jacinta and her Mum show the power of the Sneaky Bitch. Her Mum after years and years of alcohol abuse which had led to all sorts of destructive behaviours, Jacinta's Mum gave up the booze for 10 years. Jacinta, like her Mum had found herself also under the spell of alcohol and gave it up for some time. After 10 years of abstinence and after the death of her Husband, Jacinta's Mum took up drinking again and spiralled right back to where she started. Jacinta like her Mum, after months without booze found herself having "just one" with her hubby and also ended up right back where she started. In this episode we talk about the Sneaky Bitch and how she still hangs around even after years of no alcohol. It happens to me from time to time, it happens to us all and something we need to be aware of and be prepared for.We also chat about the difficulties of asking for help if you work in the medical or health sector.Jacinta is a HIQA grad for the second time, is 10 months sober now and going strong. This episode was brought to you by Monday Distillery. In this episode I chat with spirit medium, Charmaine Wilson. Charmaine is a survivor of child sexual abuse, domestic violence, addiction and went through the tragic loss of a child. Charmaine is very direct and to the point and certainly doesn't mince her words and some people may find the content of this episode triggering.
