In this episode I catch up with legendary Australian musician Dan Sultan. Dan and I have a really candid discussion about his life with alcohol and his recovery. Dan talks about the moment he got really honest in rehab which was the turning point for him and his sobriety. Dan points out how if you don't get there at first, you are not failing. We don't always get sobriety the first time. Dan is a wonderful Dad, husband and musician and is proud to say that he has never been drunk in front of his kids. 196. From IV drug use and alcohol abuse to changing lives with Jack Nagle
I was so blown away to have this incredible soul on the podcast, Jack Nagle from the Real Drug Talk podcast. Playing basketball at a high level being coached by Andrew Gaze, Jack went from being fit and healthy young man dabbling in drugs until alcohol and drug addiction took over and completely derailed Jack’s life. After becoming homeless, suicide attempts, psychosis, living a life of crime and hitting complete rock bottom Jack got into rehab and did the word to free himself. He studied drug and alcohol counselling and is now running outreach programs to help kids and adults free themselves from the hold of addiction. Using his own experiences, Jack is passionate about using the destruction of his past as his greatest asset to give the hope of freedom to people suffering with addiction, and educating the community with the reality of addiction. Working at the coal face of addiction treatment with various leading addiction treatment centres in Australia, appearing on national television, regularly commenting in broadcast media and print, working with government and being in and around addiction for over a decade, he has positively impacted thousands of lives. The difference between PTSD and CPTSDOften times a lot of people think they need to have had a big T trauma to have CPTSD, but often complex trauma is not an event that happened but rather a continually CPTSD when a child grows up in an environment where the emotional needs of a child are continually not met. Jeanie talks about Flashback Flashbacks and what they look like. When we have a bigger emotional reaction than what seems warranted for the situation which can often lead to feelings of shame or guilt, or even needing to drink to cope with the situation. Jeannie refers to the work of Pete Walker and his book CPTSD from Surviving To Thriving and how we can soothe ourselves when we get into a place of emotional flashback. We also hear some shares with the group, Jeannie address parentification or role reversal with parents. We also address the 13 steps to managing an emotional flashback. 189. Seeking freedom through alcohol and then finding it with sobriety with Emily Walter
In today's episode, I catch up with Emily Walter. Emily is a drum teacher from Melbourne who had just recently gone over 500 days alcohol free, which is her first time in over 20 years with no intention of stopping. From the age of 16, she started drinking regularly on most weekends up until the age of 40. She used alcohol as a way of fitting in and feeling comfortable in her own skin.Fast forward to her mid 20's, she began drinking on her own, thinking that alcohol was giving her a sense of freedom. It was until she let alcohol go, learned to sit with the uncomfortable, and started changing her life that she has found true freedom.Emily went on her alcohol free journey on her own, without a community other than listening to the stories on this podcast, and using the tools she picked up on the podcast to help her through, which highlights the importance of sharing our stories. To reach out to Emily or to enquire about her drum workshops go toInstagram @boomshop_drumming Or email her on [email protected] for Ash show www.ashgrunwald.comThis episode was brought to you by Monday Distillery. In 2022 Katherine Dunell lost her husband Brett after a long battle with melanoma. In this beautiful chat we talk about-Dealing with the reality that her husband was leaving, -Dealing with her grief and how staying off alcohol helped her process the grief and to be there for her kids as they navigate this huge change. -Having an alcohol free funeral and how that created a boundary for her and the kids. Kat had a strong practice of "musts" which included remembering to have gratitude, and the most basic things like sleep, or remembering to eat. As Kat says there is not right or wrong way to grieve. We hope that by sharing her story that it may offer some hope and support for people that are going through grief. Kat created a fundraising page for the Melanoma Institute Australia in Brett's name after he died to raise funds for research into melanoma instead of receiving flowers. The page has so far raised 28k. She also raised a further 8k by organising the first Melanoma March in Geelong, link below.https://inmemory.melanoma.org.au/page/BrettAndrewSmithAnother charity Kat would like to support is a local Geelong based charity Wombats Wish they run bereavement camps for families after the death of a parent in Victoria. https://wombatswish.org.au/donate/The book I mentioned by Zenith Virago, The Intimacy Of Death And Dying. https://www.amazon.com.au/Intimacy-Death-Dying-guidance-through/dp/1741758947The book I mention at the endThe Smell of Rain on Dust, Grief and Praise - by Martin Prechtel Hosted on Acast. Lyndal introduces the concept of the "safety trap", and becoming aware of feeling so good that we start to neglect the ongoing work required to maintain sobriety. We chat about the significance of sticking to your daily practice to stay on track. Even when you are on holidays!!!Recognising warning signs is crucial in preventing a potential relapse. Lyndal provides insights into being aware of shifts in mood, behaviour, or thought patterns. By taking action early on, individuals can prevent a full-blown relapse and get back on track towards recovery. We also discuss the importance of leaning on friends, family, support groups and your sober gang to stay connected. We touch upon the need for a mindset shift - viewing recovery as a continuous process rather than an endpoint. 169. Do I really want a drink or is there more to it? Learning from the wobbles with Naomi from NSW
In this episode I catch up with one of the HIQA grads Naomi from NSW, Naomi suffered huge blackouts and would go to huge lengths to try to jog her memory from the night before. We also chat about navigating the waters of figuring out who you are and rediscovering your identity without alcohol. Taking the time to notice what you are really craving if you get wobbly. Often times when we have a strong craving there is generally a lot more to the craving than just wanting alcohol.
