The Shameless girls on shame and coming clean
Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews are no strangers to the backlash that often comes with working and, to a point, living your life online. Their pop culture podcast Shameless consistently tops the Australian podcast charts, but it’s when they speak openly about their personal struggles with topics that are often kept quiet - like endometriosis, vaginismus and mental health - that they receive the most attention. Their advice on finding the courage to speak up (even when it’s the last thing you feel like doing), and side-stepping shame, is not to be missed. This is part two of our chat, so please be sure to go back and listen to yesterday’s episode with these bright sparks, too. The Shameless girls on finding purpose amongst the mess
Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews are something of a two-woman media empire. After leaving their roles at a mass digital publishing company, the journalist friends decided to go it alone and launch a podcast that their ex-employee didn’t want. The fact that said podcast, called Shameless, is one of the most downloaded in Australia - and has gone on to spawn merchandise, live events and now a book - called The Space Between: Chaos. Questions. Magic. Welcome to your twenties - speaks volumes about the ease at which these two have tapped into Australia's millennial psyche. But their success hasn’t come without drawbacks. Michelle and Zara have been propelled into the buzzing but also brutal world of online commentary and, as they share, it’s had a huge effect on their mental health, their sense of confidence and also their friendship. This is part one, of a two-part chat, so please be sure to tune into to the follow-up tomorrow. Should I be drinking my collagen?
Turns out slapping collagen on your face will NOT help to keep your skin looking youthful… but there are a slew of ingestible beauty supplements on the market that are promising to help boost collagen production from the inside. Magdalena Roze's #1 gift to any new mum is so, so simple
This former TV presenter swapped the bright city lights for a quieter existence in Byron Bay, but that doesn’t mean her life is idyllic. Magdalena suffered from a little-known but widely experienced thing called postnatal depletion and it inspired her to get back to basics when it came to many things - but mostly food. She shares why our culture doesn’t give new mums the time and space they need, but also shares the absolute best gift you can give anyone who’s just given birth. And no, it doesn’t involve flowers, bunny-print onesies or even wine. You can find Magdalena on Instagram at @magdalena_roze, and more of her recipes online here. The DIY facial trick that costs ZERO dollars
At-home facials have some a long way since your Ten-O-Six toners and Biore pore strips (although, fun). But even with the best skincare products at home, it’s hard to get that post-facial glow that you get from an in-salon treatment. Renowned Sydney facialist Diandra Pilitano dialled in to share her advice for recreating the magic at home, and her biggest tip, surprisingly, costs exactly zero dollars. Sjarna Elise Earp on why everybody is a yoga body
Sjarna Elise Earp has an Instagram following that is hard to fathom. 1.6 million people look to her feed for yoga, travel and holistic health inspiration. Sjarna (pronounced See-ar-nah) seems oddly unaffected however by her social media fame, as we found after speaking to her from her on the eve of her first book’s debut, in her childhood home on the central coast of New South Wales. Sjarna makes a case for shrugging off the body-shamers, and finding inner calm on the yoga mat. And according to her, anyone can benefit from yoga… because it’s more about the mind than about the body. You can find Sjarna on Instagram at @sjarnaelise and or online here. WTF is niacinamide, and does my face need it?
Some skincare ingredients gain what seems like cult status pretty quickly… but what does it all mean? And what will the products that slap these buzzy words on their bottles actually do for your face? Kelsey and Ali dissect one of the buzziest on the block, niacinamide and ask Instagram’s favourite skin scientist Lab Muffin to weigh in with her thoughts, too. In this first of our two-part series with Jesinta, she speaks frankly (see what we did there?) about how her once strict exercise and nutrition habits has been thrown out the window, and the ‘huge journey’ she’s been on with her sleep, and why it’s ok to say you’re not coping. Elsa Pataky on the joy and the chaos
Elsa Pataky may be known in Australia as the wife of national treasure/our greatest export, actor Chris Hemsworth. But she’s actually more famous than her Thor-star husband in her home country of Spain. And we think the more that Australian gets to know this horseback-riding, yoga-loving mum of three, the more we’ll think of Chris as ‘Elsa Pataky’s husband’. We caught up with Elsa on set for her Body+Soul cover shoot in Byron Bay’s hinterland, and she was surprisingly candid about the chaos of motherhood, the realities of ageing, what self-care means to her now, and what the silver linings of COVID have been for herself, Chris, and her family.
