The Heart of the Spark with Jonathan Fields
As I get older there's a lot less fear around being myself. I've become conscious of my truest nature and don't feel the need to seek approval from others. This has allowed me to feed my curiosity for learning while also being present for my kids, Tiger and Ocean. My guest, the very humble Jonathan Fields, is talking about this exact change in self-perception, something he refers to as your Sparketype. He believes that we change in depth, quality, and self-awareness as we get older—a shift that he talks about in his new book, SPARKED: Discover Your Unique Imprint for Work That Makes You Come Alive. Jonathan is a speaker, award-winning author, and creator of multiple businesses. Today he takes a deep dive into our states of mind and shows us how we can come alive at work and at home. Jonathan shares his thoughts on identity, his organic life lessons, and helps us balance the spectrum of fulfillment—something that we all struggle with as entrepreneurial dads. Tune in to this amazing conversation that I know will spark your inspiration. Jonathan Fields Podcast Highlights Part 1 Does the context matter in how you're seen or witnessed? What's the identity you wear versus the identity that you are? Can it be bad to feel centered? How do we create ideas, practices, and tools around the context of work? How to become intentional in all the roles in your life. The dark side to figuring out what you're supposed to do, and getting absorbed with the work that you're doing. What is the spectrum of fulfillment? Having the conversation with your partner to make sure you have a circuit breaker in place from your pursuits. Ep 300Honoring Boundaries and Breaking Rules with Andrew Kuhn & Matt Drinkhahn - Part 1
A friend of mine reached out to chat the other day. And as much as I love to chat, I really just wanted to tell them that I had no time. Absolutely none. And that's hard for me. I don't know about you, but time management and scheduling in my calendar really kicks my ass sometimes. How do we actually get everything done in our schedules and then have time to be dads? How do we learn to set boundaries around saying no to certain things? Luckily, we have Andrew Kuhn and 'Coach' Matt Drinkhahn on today's two part episode talking to us about what's proven to be effective in our calendars, where we fail, and how we learn from that. These two family men are successful business owners, and members of Front Row Dads. Matt is a coach for recovering perfectionists and highly functioning workaholics, while Andrew is the owner of a real estate investment company—and they're absolutely killing it. They teach us about integrity in keeping our commitments, and knowing when to break the rules surrounding the boundaries you've made for yourself if something just isn't working. You can't buy time and what takes up that time is important. If you've ever struggled with figuring out the ebb and flow of work-life integration, you won't want to miss today's episode! Ep 298Cultivating Curiosity with Consent Based Learning with Philip Mott - Part 1
What if… Instead of helping your kids see the world differently, you try to see your kids' world differently? This idea comes from my two-part episode with Philip Mott, which is all about homeschooling and consent based learning. Philip Mott is the author of Principles of the Patient Parent, and elementary teacher turned homeschooling father. He shares his struggles with school growing up, and how he started to associate learning with pain, frustration, and being looked down on— something I never want my kids to feel while learning. As someone who never quite vibed with the educational system myself, the topic of alternative education is one I want to consistently explore. Philip and I cover lots of ground, including — curiosity, consent, and recognizing the storyline of your kids. Philip teaches us that there shouldn't be a difference between learning and living and wants to shift your mindset around how to educate your kids. If you've ever considered a different approach to your kids schooling, I promise you won't want to miss this 2-part episode! Philip Mott Podcast Part 1 Highlights How do you approach learning for you and your kids? What's the main principle behind unschooling and what is consent based learning? Avoid letting microaggressions ruin your day! Why parenting books might be giving you the wrong advice. How your children feel in their learning environment can equal a massive shift in the outcome. Ep 297In a World Addicted to Speed, Slowness is Your Superpower with Carl Honoré
Lately I've been wanting to wake up and have the first 10 minutes of my day to be full of nothing. Whether it's refraining from opening my phone, making a to-do list, or sending off an email, I'd really prefer a moment to sit on the couch, or snuggle with my kids and listen to a children's audiobook. And maybe we're all moving a little too fast. As fathers, especially ambitious entrepreneurial dads, it's easy to put speed into your family life; having a workaholic approach to parenting. But that's not how it should be. What if we stopped trying to fill up that time, slowed down, and just experienced being in the moment? On today's episode, we have the very inspirational Carl Honoré, who talks about exactly that. Author of four books, a two-time TED speaker, broadcaster, journalist, and voice of the Slow Movement, Carl has delivered his insight on the benefits of being slow to millions across the globe. A free-range child of the 80's, Carl had a slow childhood, and tries hard to give that same upbringing to his two kids. In a time when life is so fast, that's easier said than done. He shares his thoughts on how in a world of speedoholics, we should be connecting with our inner tortoise so that we can live our lives and be present for our family. Carl wants us to know that being slow isn't just about taking forever to do something. It's about the right speed. It's about finding your tempo and being present in the moment. It's about how you bring balance to your family. Carl tackles the topic of societal pressures put on parents to deal with their child's boredom, and argues that the point of unstructured time is exactly when they learn how to be creative and do things that form their identity—which is critical to their development. As a dad who has felt those same pressures to find something to do, instead of letting my kids figure out how to fill that space, I can tell you this conversation was an eye opening experience. If you're like me and have been feeling like you're racing to the finish line but missing out on those small moments with your kids, I promise you that you won't want to miss out on today's episode. Ep 288Raising Unspoiled Kids, Money for Practice & Views on Investing in College with Ron Lieber
How do we give our kids what they need, while teaching them the value of what they have? My son, Ocean, has recently expressed his new business idea, Front Row Kids. He has a goal to "work to get money" because he "only has ten dollars, and he owes me five." 😂 I'm super proud of him, but it also made me wonder: if he's bringing up money, is it time to have the conversation about it's value? I feel like I'm not the only one who worries about how to raise their kids without spoiling them rotten, while also letting them thrive. What time is the right time to even talk to your kids about the practice of money? Today's guest, Ron Lieber, covers all this in his new book, The Price You Pay for College: An Entirely New Road Map for the Biggest Financial Decision Your Family Will Ever Make Ron explains that if you've never talked about money with your kids, they just won't have context. He also shares how to raise your kids to be grounded while not spoiling them. He cautions us on how important it is to be able and willing to have the conversation early and help our kids understand why you won't prioritize their wants, just because you have the money. Ron also tackles the approach of setting emotional and financial boundaries for your family. He shares advice on parental guilt, fear, why most parents fail to talk about money and what makes these topics so uncomfortable in the first place—things I sometimes struggle with myself with my own parenting. Luckily, Ron helps us navigate all of these difficult topics on today's episode! Ron Lieber Podcast Highlights How do you raise your kids to be grounded without being spoiled? What is the definition of success and how much is enough? Overthinking how to have a healthy relationship with your spouse and how to be a good dad. Don't think about financial boundaries as deprivation. Spend as safely as you can on what brings you joy, and cut out everything else. Setting emotional and financial boundaries with our families. Helping your kids understand the financial and educational systems. The silence around money that's hurting your children. How you can overcome your fear and guilt as a Dad around doing it wrong. How much do we give to our kids versus letting them pay/work for it on their own. How to help your child thrive in a creative way and encourage them to help themselves. Ep 287Reach Your Full Financial Potential and Be Present for Your Kids with Scott Jarred
How do we make time to live the life that we want while reaching our full financial potential? I was putting my 6 year old, Ocean, to bed the other night. He asked me for one more Gerald and Piggie story, his personal favorite works of fiction by Mo Williams. I'm going to be honest. I was really tired, and so close to saying no because of that. But then I asked myself, how long will he want me to read one more story? How long will I have this opportunity? Do I choose the pleasure of sleeping or the happiness of hanging out with my son? In the end, I read that 5 minute book, and it gave me a lot of joy. It's hard sometimes being a Dad and figuring out how to balance work, your family, and all the extra things that come in life, especially when you're exhausted at the end of the day. This is what I'm talking about with Scott Jarred, author of FutureHack!: How To Reach Your Full Financial Potential. Scott explains how to make your money work harder for you, so you have more time to put into chalking up your driveway, reading that bedtime story, or simply being able to play with your kids and be present with your family! He explains that there are two people in this world: people who live in scarcity, and people who are abundant thinkers, a frame of mind he says is a huge game changer for helping you get out of a rut. It also translates into being a better Dad. He also touches on the importance of having a family constitution, a way to raise your kids and pass down core values that hold true to you as a father. Ep 286The Power of the Beginner's Mindset with Pieter Geldenhuys
Gentlemen, what if I told you that there was someone out there who could take you on a journey to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro, hike the Camino de Santiago, or navigate the Inca Trail–and discover more about yourself, the people around you, and all of humanity along the way? Well, that someone is Pieter Geldenhuys–and as soon as I learned about him, I was fascinated. Pieter is a husband and father of two boys. He's also built, scaled, and merged a number of companies, including Shoshin Walks, where he takes people on incredible journeys both around the world and within themselves. His mission is so in alignment with what we do at Front Row Dads that I knew I needed to talk to him. In this great conversation, we explore what shoshin is—the Zen buddhist term for a beginner's mindset. You'll also hear how a talented entrepreneur who is focused on tourism survived the chaos of 2020, and why walking is such a great way to learn and grow! Pieter Geldenhuys Podcast Highlights What is the relationship between anger and curiosity? How does the beginner's mindset keep us open to learning? How can the outdoors help us connect to our spirituality? Pieter's favorite trip in the world. How Pieter hacked meditation. How Pieter used intention setting to write his first novel this year. How do you cultivate and keep a beginner's mindset, both at work and at home? Why not being seen sets Pieter off. The value of taking a business meeting as a walk instead of grabbing coffee or beer. To help answer these questions, my special guest today is Mike Miller. He's a family man with three adult daughters, COO at Advisors Excel, creator of the First Habits System, and the author of First Habits Win: Prime Your Children for a Lifetime of Financial Success with This Simple System. Ep 284Protecting Kids From Porn with Sean Clifford
Guys, we all have a story about the first time we saw pornography. For me (and maybe you too), it involved finding a Playboy in the woods. Or someone snagged one of their dad's or uncle's magazines and brought it to guys' night when you were in high school. It might've felt pretty harmless at the time–but for our kids, things are VERY different. How different? I read recently that 50% of kids have seen pornography by the time they're between the ages of 11 and 13, and that twice as many adolescents have seen porn of some kind than their parents realize. Of those kids, more than half saw pornography unintentionally. As someone with a 12 year old boy, this is a topic I've been thinking about a lot–and it's why I needed to chat with Sean Clifford. Sean's the CEO of Canopy, an online parenting app designed to help kids lead a safer existence online. Installed on over 2 million devices worldwide, it uses AI to identify nudity and pornography, can help prevent sexting, and makes it easier for parents to keep tabs on their kids' screen time without rendering the internet unusable. He's also a father of four, so he's deeply invested in all of this. In our chat today, Sean and I talk not just about protecting our kids from pornography, but how to raise children who can make sense of (and resist) all the addictive content out there in our modern world. Sean Clifford Podcast Highlights What is Canopy, and why should parents care about it? Why is content (including pornography) more addictive than ever before–and only getting more addictive? Why Sean mostly doesn't let his kids use devices as home–and how he and his wife are trying to model acceptable device usage. At what age should we start talking about pornography and problematic content with our kids? Why is it so dangerous to completely disengage from what our kids do online? Why Canopy is not a silver bullet–and why that's okay. What happens when you take screens away from your kids? What we learned from taking screens away on our six week road trip. How do we deal with dopamine hits, serotonin, and feeling fulfilled? How can you do a digital reset for yourself and your family? Ep 283RV Life: The Ups and Downs of Being on the Road
"I wouldn't take the trip back for anything, but boy it kicked my ass!" Gents, in this episode we're talking all about RV life — extended road trips, trailers, camping, and year round travel with the entire family. In case you missed it, I bought a 17-foot trailer and embarked on one of the most challenging family trips of my life. We made some incredible memories, but it wasn't exactly sunshine and rainbows either. Since returning home from the Vroman's big RV adventure (earlier than anticipated), I've been getting A LOT of questions… What should I plan for when it comes to RVing with my family? What type of rig do I need to get across the country in one piece? Can I work from the road AND enjoy the adventure at the same time? How do you have sex with your wife when your kids are 6 feet away?! Today, we dive into all of this and more. I'm speaking with my friends Aaron Amuchastegui and Jason Shinpaugh who have both travelled extensively with their families. You'll get a high level look at what to expect, how to plan for the worst, food considerations, gadgets to buy, preparation tips, and more. You'll hear our most epic moments, as well as our biggest failures. If you're considering a trip like this for the first time, there's a ton of insight from this conversation to set you up for success. Trust me, you don't want to "wing it" like I did :) RV Life Podcast Highlights Am I selling my RV? You'll have to listen to find out ;) RV, Camper, Motor Home, Trailer, 5th Wheel, Class A, Class C — what's the difference and which one is right for you? Why tough family moments only get tougher when you're on the road. Showing your kids that you're not perfect. Aaron shares what it was like driving through 17 states in 3 months. Is it possible to manage work while on the road? Jason's experience after selling his possessions and travelling full time for the past 5 years. Why unmet expectations are the #1 cause of stress while living on the road. How much time should you spend in one location before moving onto the next destination? I completely underestimated transition time when coming and going. Healthy eating hacks you can use when travelling. Why planning is so crucial to a successful RV trip — and the importance of doing a trial run before committing to a longer expedition. Should your kids wear seatbelts when the RV is being driven? The moment I was most ashamed of during the trip — and what I did about it. The best memory from our entire trip — a moment I would have never have expected. Saying no to luxury, and yes to adventure. A funny story about sex in the RV. RVing is not a vacation… It's life! Ep 282Dad's 17 Year Old Son Helps Create SudShare, the Uber for Laundry
We've talked about how to be family men with businesses many times on this show. But one thing we don't talk about enough is how to run businesses with our families. And this is what Mort Fertel and his family are doing right now, and they're having some pretty incredible success with it. For anyone with large families, it probably goes without saying that the struggle to keep up with the laundry is very real. It's relentless! How many hours each week do you spend doing laundry when you have seven people living under one roof? The answer is too many hours. So, to help lessen the burden, Mort and his wife started including their kids in this household chore. And one day, while having a simple family discussion about the ever-present laundry issue, Mort's teenage son had a wild idea. He said, "I don't want to do this anymore. But I'll make you an app." His thought was, "if Uber can take us to the airport, why can't someone else do our laundry?" And just like that, a new business idea was born. Today, Sudshare is in 300 cities nationwide, helping families all over the country solve their laundry woes and also creating work-from-home jobs in the process with an Uber-style business model. With an app that was fully researched and created by his teenage son, the serial entrepreneur with five children is now running a business with his triplets! When I heard about what Mort's been up to, I knew we needed to reconnect to talk about the art of running a family business. I'm just so impressed by SudShare's incredible growth, and the impact this service is having on families. It's such an amazing story, and I can't wait to share it with you. If you want to learn how to help your kids activate their superpowers, share your family's core values with the world, and build an awesome business together, you're going to love this conversation. Mort Fertel Podcast Highlights What SudShare is all about, and how is it making people's lives better. The importance of keeping your ego in check and giving your kids runway to figure things out. How do you detect, articulate, and share the core values of a business? How can you tell if you've made the right decision in business, even if it's unpopular? How do you create roles (or let your kids create roles) within a family business that play to everyone's strengths How do thriving family businesses avoid unnecessary competition between siblings? How do we direct our kids to the right influences and mentors to shape who they become? Why Mort doesn't advise anyone to start a family business in spite of their success. Ep 281How to Talk with Kids with Ned Johnson and Dr. William R. Stixrud
"I just can't handle you right now." That's how I'm feeling around my kids lately. As many of you know, I've been on a pretty epic family road trip across the country. We've been making some incredible memories and having a ton of fun, but it hasn't been without some serious challenges. My wife has been sick for the past week, the boys are constantly fighting, I'm trying to manage my business (while keeping everyone engaged), and there've been some tragic events with my extended family, to name just a few. To be honest, I feel like I'm reaching my breaking point. I've lost all patience, I'm emotionally drained, and I just don't have the bandwidth to deal with my kids immediate needs. And I can feel the negative impact that my energy is having on my kids—which doesn't sit right with me. I don't want to be the Dad who replies to my kids with the classic "Because I said so…" line. Well, the timing for today's episode of the podcast couldn't be better. Returning guests, Ned Johnson and William Stixrud, join the show to talk all about their new book, What Do You Say?: How to Talk with Kids to Build Motivation, Stress Tolerance, and a Happy Home. Ned and Bill reminded me that nobody gets it right all the time. In fact, perfect parenting just doesn't exist, and my current feelings are completely normal. Thankfully, they shared some pro tips for practicing self-compassion and dealing with the kids when life gets crazy—ones that I know you'll appreciate! If you sometimes find it hard to talk with our kids, you're going to love this conversation. Ned and Bill share some really powerful strategies for creating deeper connections, building empathy, and engaging in respectful and effective dialogue. This is your comprehensive guide to effectively communicating with kids! Ned Johnson Podcast Highlights How to talk to kids (and really listen) in order to build powerful connections. Changing the energy in the way you talk to your children. Letting your kids know when you're having a tough day/week. How to practice non-judgmental self-compassion. Why nobody needs perfect parents. In fact, 'good enough' is better than you may think. The power of spending one-on-one time with your kids. Talking with kids about the pursuit of happiness. Using reflective listening to build empathy with your kids. Helping kids find their own motivation. How does a kid's age impact how you speak to them? Why you should want your kids to solve their own problems as much as possible. Are you accidentally bailing on your kids emotionally? Ep 280Staying Healthy and Standing Up For What Matters Most with Christian Elliot
In a super-divisive world, how do we find common ground, do what's best for our families, and approach things with an open mind? We may not have a clear answer at all times, but sometimes we come across some information that opens our minds to another point of view. And Christian Elliott's article titled, "18 Reasons Why I'm Not Getting a Covid Vaccine" is definitely one of them. A friend of mine told me that I had to read his article, which has now been seen millions of times all over the world, and it really resonated with me. I was struck by how well it was written, the classy approach he took, and his courage in speaking out. And after reading his article, I knew I needed to have him on the podcast to talk about a lot of the questions we've probably all had at one point or another over this past year. Christian is a certified personal trainer, life coach, and a nutrition coach. He's all about living a healthy lifestyle and helping others figure out what inspires them. He has a fascination with the human body, human psychology, and a willingness to have honest discussions with people who may have a different point of view. In today's conversation, Christian and I aren't just talking about how to keep ourselves and our families healthy–we're talking about what it means to stand up for what we really believe in and how to teach our children to do the same. Christian Elliot Podcast Highlights What makes health such a passionate subject for Christian–and how he went from being frequently sick in his late 20s to finding his best health in his 40s. How can we embody the values most important to us every single day? The power of sitting and creating space for your kids' emotions. Why Christian believes "He wasn't really present" is the worst thing our kids could say about us. How to teach kids to be open-minded. Why Christian felt compelled to write his article about COVID-19 vaccines. Why the thought of his kids saying "He didn't stand up for what was right" would be such a dagger to him. Why is the world so bad at talking about our health in practical, meaningful ways? Ep 279HOW You Speak to Your Kids Matters More Than You Think with Krister Ungerböck
When you think back to your own childhood, was there anything your Dad ever said to you (good or bad) that stayed with you forever? I can still vividly recall moments from my upbringing when Dad said something (unintentionally) that really hurt me. And despite having always believed I would never act the same way with my own kids, I've certainly had moments I'm not proud of. HOW you speak to your kids matters more than you think... It could be criticism, a sarcastic comment, blowing your fuse, or maybe not even saying anything at all… I've heard lots of stories of men who just wished their Dad would have told them how proud they were—and sadly, not hearing those words affected everything. So, what's going on here? And how do we show up and be better leaders for our own kids? That's what today's episode with Krister Ungerböck is all about. Krister is a leadership communication expert, keynote speaker, and former CEO of a global tech company. In fact, he sold that company for over $200 million—and it was worth less than $1 million when he joined. During his time there, he learned a lot of lessons about what works (and what doesn't) when it comes to communicating effectively as an employee, an entrepreneur, a husband, and a father—and he's documented all of this wisdom in his bestselling book, 22 Talk SHIFTs: Tools to Transform Leadership in Business, in Partnership, and in Life. Before Krister released his book, he actually sat down and read the manuscript to his father, and this was his response… "I had no idea how my words hurt you." I really loved speaking with Krister about this stuff. We talked about how most problems that families experience can be resolved, simply by changing the words that they use. He outlines some pretty simple (yet highly effective) tools you can immediately start using to improve how you communicate at home with your wife and kids. These practical tools include fill-in-the-blank phrases, powerful questions, and provocative exercises that can break the cycle of strained communication and strained relationships. We also discussed why it's so important for your kids to see you show emotions. SPOILER ALERT: Men who lead, aren't afraid to cry! And don't miss the end of our conversation. Krister shares the one question he asked his Dad at the age of 47 that changed their relationship forever. BTW, as a thank you for listening, I want to gift you a copy of Krister's book! All I ask is that you write an honest review of the podcast on Apple. Be sure to mention the Krister Ungerböck episode in your review, take a screenshot, and email it to [email protected] and I'll mail you a copy of the book. Krister Ungerböck Podcast Highlights Why Krister got no emotional validation from leading a hugely successful business–and the one thing he always wanted to hear from his father. Why is it almost impossible to be a great father without being a great husband? Why saying "That's great" or "good job" meant so much less to Krister than hearing "I'm proud of you." How can we simply change our words to resolve some of our toughest conflicts? What are the most damaging words we accidentally use daily? Why Krister is trying not to use the word "you" in tense conversations at all. Why do our spouses often take coaching from us so poorly? When should we choose not to coach people? The importance of teaching our children to cry like men (and what that means). Why Krister never really hung out with his Dad as friends until he was 47 years old. How can we heal from our relationships with overly critical parents? Ep 278Erik Raschke on Positive Reinforcement and Making Sacrifices for Your Kids
Erik had been told by countless therapists that he was in denial. He'd heard over and over again that his autistic son would never learn to read. But when they found the right program, it took just six days for something to click–and his teenage son was suddenly reading. Erik's family life has been full of little breakthroughs since he made a decision to show up for his oldest son in a big way. You'll learn all about this, as well as his new book To The Mountain–a powerful story inspired by their relationship. We talk about why we make sacrifices, what works (and what doesn't) when showing up for kids with conditions including autism and ADHD, and how to process anger and frustration in healthy ways. BTW, If you'd like to receive a FREE copy of Erik's book, I'll buy you one. Just leave an honest review of this episode at http://FrontRowDads.com/review, and email a screenshot of your review and your address (US addy's only gents) to [email protected], and we'll send you a copy of the book as a thank you! Some of the topics I discuss with Dr. Ian Kerner: What autism looks like for most kids Why positive reinforcement made all the difference with Erik's son. How Erik's father instilled in him a love of reading and writing. What is sacrifice? The difference between a great dad and a terrible one. Why are some dads so much better at being parents when their kids are very young, or when they're teenagers, or even later in life? When do we take on too much responsibility? The common misconceptions about how to show up for and support kids with autism, ADHD, and a wide range of other conditions. Why do kids suffer when they grow up in sterile environments? Ep 277Ian Kerner | Is Predictable Sex Killing Your Marriage?
She called me a sex god. I laughed, but knew I may have earned it! Gents... this show is going to get seriously personal. We're talking oral sex, bedroom routines, easing anxiety, ethical porn and more. A few years ago, my friend Lance Salazar, author of The Miracle Morning for Couples, gave me a copy of Dr. Ian Kerner's book, She Comes First. Long story short: six months later, my wife was telling all our friends that I'd become some sort of sex god (not kidding). It wasn't until I was in my early 40s that I started to learn how to really light up my wife. We cover a lot of ground on the show, including a look into the work behind his new book, So Tell Me About the Last Time You Had Sex: Laying Bare and Learning to Repair Our Love Lives. Some of the topics I discuss with Dr. Ian Kerner: What does variety look like in a healthy sexual relationship? The $2.00 purchase that saved my sex life The one thing that needed to happen, for my wife to beg for sex. Are your routines (sex scripts) killing your love life? What are your core erotic themes? How do you create variety in a sexual relationship? Is there ethical porn and has porn become problematic? Do men need to manage masturbation? If you're kids bust you having sex, is that traumatic? Why our cultural norms surrounding sex leave people dysfunctional, depressed, and without sexual self-esteem. Why dominant cultural narratives fail to honor female sexuality. Why guys should be talking about sex more often. Why do sex scripts fall into predictable patterns or just get boring? The common threads of sex scripts that work. Why anxiety is the enemy of arousal When should we talk to our kids about sex and pornography? Is there more trauma for a child in seeing their parents have sex, or feeling that their parents lived in a sexless marriage? What matters more–providing for our families, or being there for our spouses and our kids while we make incredible memories? When I learned that entrepreneur Tyler Gunter decided to make big changes in his life and retired at the age of 30 to show up for his family first and his business second, I knew I needed to talk to him. Tyler is the founder of Adventure Dads, a group of about a dozen dads that take trips with their children of all ages. They've gone spelunking, rode go-karts, and explored artificial biospheres, to name just a few of their activities. More importantly, they've also helped kids foster incredible friendships and forge connections within their community. In our conversation today, Tyler and I talk about the power of influence and mentorship when it comes to our kids–and how we can be a positive presence in our kids' lives, even when they stop wanting to listen to us. We also talk about what it means to live a balanced and intentional life, and the beauty of learning to let go. Nate Klemp's Podcast Highlights What is Adventure Dads and why did Tyler create it? Who are the people we want to be actively involved in our kids' lives? How can we have serious conversations about real issues with our kids? How do our kids' friends influence them–and how can we have an influence on our kids' friends? What makes going on adventures with our kids so valuable? The moment that taught Tyler and his wife that nothing could make up for lost time together. How do you know who will show up for your family if something happens to you? How can tragedy bring out the best in a family or a community? How can you reverse engineer a life of intention? What Tyler does when he screws up or knows he lost his cool. Ep 275How to Win the Marriage Game Without Keeping Score with Nate Klemp
We've all heard of the mythical 100/100 marriage before — one where both partners give 100% at all times, and everything's always great. But let's take a step back and get real for a second: How often do you feel like you're able to give 100%? How often do you feel like you're getting 100%? If you've ever argued about who is (or isn't) giving enough, did it feel like you were going around in circles while nothing improved? With that in mind, I'd like to ask you one more question: what if the magic number isn't 100%? Nate Klemp — PhD, bestselling author, and founding partner at Mindful, wants you to stop thinking in terms of 100/100. In his new book, The 80/80 Marriage: A New Model for a Happier, Stronger Relationship, he and his wife Kaley pinpoint exactly what doesn't work in modern marriage. They share incredible stories from their own lives and others, as well as practical, powerful solutions designed to transform your relationship and deepen your connection. In our conversation, Nate and I are talking about why even mindfulness junkies can get triggered, why scorekeeping and fairness suck, and how you can break out of unhealthy loops once and for all to transform your marriage for the better. Also, as a thank you for listening, I want to gift a copy of Nate's book to you! All I ask is that you write an honest review of the podcast on Apple. Be sure to mention the Nate Klemp episode in your review, take a screenshot, and email it to [email protected] and I'll mail you a copy of the book. Nate Klemp's Podcast Highlights Why do we still lose our sh*t, even after spending so much time on breathwork, meditation, exercise, and everything else that's supposed to help us stay in check? How do our kids show us everything that we need to be working on as parents? Why is it so easy to fall into fights about what is and isn't fair in relationships–especially when we have kids? The three core components of an 80/80 marriage. The contagious qualities of radical fairness and behaving out of character. Why doesn't 100/100 (or 50/50) work in a relationship? Why is it possible to lose who we are when we try to be generous? Why people think an 80/80 marriage is harder than it actually is–and how leveling up your relationship can take as little as 20 seconds a day. Is there anything we can do to make the 50/50 mindset go away? What couples actively living the 80/80 lifestyle are doing right now. How do we tap into the inherent love and generosity available to us? What happens when we become too calm and collected? How to incorporate breathwork into your daily practice. Ep 274Deeply Knowing Your Kids with Phillip Stutts
Phillip Stutts, my new friend, just published The Undefeated Marketing System. It's a book about how to grow businesses and build audiences. If you want to learn a lot about digital marketing and the tools and techniques that win presidential campaigns, he lays it all out. But I took more from it than that. Phillip's book taught me to learn more about my kids and my wife. Most importantly, it made me ask myself, "How can I connect and deliver as a family man?" Phillip writes about the importance of really listening to people when it comes to reaching them through marketing, yet all the lessons he teaches apply just as much to our families as they do to our companies. In today's conversation with Phillip, we talk about the dramatic changes he's made in the last five years of his life to write a book, show up for his family, own six companies, and fight an extraordinarily rare esophageal disease. You'll learn about his remarkable transformation, the five rules of marketing that every successful campaign follows, and how to become a better listener to improve every relationship in your life. I strongly feel like this is a book that everyone should read right now (in fact, I'm having my entire team read it right now), and as a thank you for listening, I want to gift it to you! All I ask is that you write an honest review of the podcast on Apple. Be sure to mention the Phillip Stutts episode in your review, take a screenshot, and email it to [email protected] and I'll mail you a copy of the book. Phillip Stutts' Podcast Highlights Why do projects like writing books take such a toll on our families? How do we live a life of joy with our families–especially when our own childhoods were not happy? How an illness can make us better parents and entrepreneurs. The importance of gut health. Why is it so easy to become addicted to distraction–and how does this manifest in our lives? When we've made big changes in our lives, how can we show up to help others who we think are just a few steps behind us in their journeys–and should we help at all? What makes so many marketing campaigns so ineffective. How can you build a marketing machine that stays ahead of technology changes? What Phillip learned from absolutely blowing an Instagram ad campaign for what was then the biggest client he'd ever landed. What is both our greatest asset (and flaw) as a business owner? What happens when our kids and spouses really feel seen and heard? Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? Ep 273Addictions, Recovery and Coming Back to Life with Jesse Harless
My friend Johnny Kane didn't just recommend that I read Jesse Harless's book, If Not You, Then Who?–he told me that everybody should read it. And man, was Johnny right. I was blown away by the first 50 pages. It's a raw, shockingly good, honest memoir about addiction and recovery. But it's more than that. Instead of simply sharing his very moving story of struggles with addiction and his road to recovery, Jesse gives his readers the power to take action and change their lives–or provide someone close to them with the help they need. After reading the book, I knew I needed to chat with Jesse, especially as we all work to unpack the collective trauma we faced as a society in 2020. In this conversation, we dig into how he became a thought leader in the world of addiction and recovery, why we're all addicts of some kind, and how to replace the patterns that don't serve us with ones that can make our lives better. I strongly feel like this is a book that everyone should read right now, so as a thank you for listening, I want to gift it to you! All I ask is that you write an honest review of the podcast on Apple. Be sure to mention the Jesse Harless episode in your review, take a screenshot, and email it to [email protected] and I'll mail you a copy of the book. Read it, share it, and let us know how it impacted you–I'm confident you'll love it! Jesse Harless Podcast Highlights What led Jesse to become a leader in the addiction and recovery space. How do cold showers help us fight anxiety? What are people recovering from right now–especially as dads and entrepreneurs? The difference between a habit and an addiction. How do people become aware of their addictions? What are the biggest addictions affecting people right now? What percentage of 30-50 year old men have an addiction of some kind? How to help your kids navigate addictions, including screens and social media. Why the opioid crisis is being swept under the rug in our society. At what age are people exposed to addictive drugs? What is the FEARS model? What does daily recovery from all the trauma we face each day look like, and how can we talk about this with our kids, no matter how old they are? What does long-term recovery from addiction look like? Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? Ep 271Dad Advice: Words of Wisdom From Men Who Love Being Dads with Craig Kessler
What would you learn if you asked 40 amazing guys to write you a letter sharing their best dad advice? Well, Craig Kessler did exactly this — and now he's sharing everything he learned in his new book, The Dad Advice Project: Words of Wisdom From Guys Who Love Being Dad (coming out on June 1). Dad Advice: Words of Wisdom From Men Who Love Being Dads with Craig Kessler As you'll hear in my chat with Craig, his inspiration for the book actually stemmed from not having a great relationship with his own father. In his search for answers, he decided to ask a handful of friends to write him a letter on "how to be a good dad." The responses he received inspired him to compile stories from 40+ dads from all walks of life — including professional athletes, TV personalities, businessmen, civic leaders, military veterans, and more! On our call, Craig shares some of the best insights from the book and provides actionable strategies that you can use to win as a husband and father :) BTW, if you'd like to get a free copy of Craig's book, leave us a review on iTunes, mention this episode and Craig in the review, and take a screenshot. Send it to [email protected], and I'll buy and mail you a copy of the book! Craig Kessler Podcast Highlights What life was like growing up for Craig. How not being able to connect with his own father led Craig to want to connect with other awesome dads about parenting. Why is there so little good content for dads out there that's interesting or engaging? What makes parenting such a sacred rite of passage? Why is it so hard to find the perfect balance when it comes to performing as a parent, as a husband, and at work? The two pieces of advice that came up time and time again in the letters Craig received. Why does Craig's family stand on chairs before dinner? How can we integrate our kids into our work? Why is it so important to leave doors unlocked when we're working? What makes crowdsourcing such an awesome way to learn? Differentiating between comparing and competition. How does being a high-level business leader help - and hurt - our performance as parents and husbands? How can we benefit as a family by taking interest in what our spouses love to do? How and why parents should fight in front of their kids. What should we say to our spouses and our kids after a fight? How do we create opportunities for people to build from scratch, rather than forcing them to fine-tune others' ideas? When everyone in your life tells you to read a book, the world is telling you something. This is exactly what happened with John Eldredge's book, Wild at Heart. Raising Resilient Boys, Being Wild at Heart and Finding Healthy Ways to Fight with John Eldredge In today's conversation with John, you'll learn how he unpacked his family trauma to become the man he is today and raise three sons of his own, how to nurture masculinity without being edgy for the sake of edginess, and what it means to show up with courage when you're needed the most. And if you'd like to get a free copy of Wild at Heart, just leave us a review of this podcast on iTunes, mention this episode and John in the review, and take a screenshot. Ep 269This Letter Changed Everything with Blake Brewer
Guys, as much as we may not want to, we have to think about what will happen to our families after we're gone. I'm not talking about money or an estate here. I'm talking about what our last words to our kids will be, and how we can share our wisdom, our advice, our love, and our memories not just while we're here on earth, but forever. Blake Brewer realized this in the hardest way possible–he lost his father in an accident while on vacation in Hawaii. While enjoying a beautiful day of snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, Blake's father suddenly got caught in a rough spot and was struggling to stay above water. His father literally died in Blake's arms while he was trying to rescue him. Just hours after he passed, Blake had to call his grandparents, his work, and his church to deliver the news. As he sat with his grief, his mother appeared in the doorway. She put some papers in his hand, which started, "Dear Blake, Natalie, and Marcus…" This Letter Changed Everything with Blake Brewer His father had been writing him a letter for several months, and was planning to give it to him on the trip. On a simple sheet of paper, his father shared his thoughts, his wisdom, encouragement, and advice–and 18 years later these words continue to guide Blake through life. Over the course of the next year, Blake saw himself develop more as a person and a leader than ever before–and learned how to live with a newfound sense of purpose. Now, Blake has dedicated his life to helping other dads share legacy letters like the one his father wrote, leading and guiding their children for an entire lifetime. In my conversation with Blake, you'll get to hear the defining moment that would change his life forever and how to write the legacy letter that's inside your heart waiting to be put to paper! Blake Brewer Podcast Highlights Why some fathers are reluctant to reach out for help when it comes to upping their dad game. The most powerful (and painful) words Blake heard between the ages of five and fifteen. How do we teach our kids to be decisive, rather than telling them what to do and how to think? Why is it so important for us as dads to tell our kids what makes us proud? The things children need to hear from you to have a confident life and develop emotional intelligence. Why is it sometimes so hard for us to communicate how we feel? What stops guys from writing a legacy letter? How does writing out our values make us more confident and articulate in business, as well as at home? How do our phones stop us from showing up for the people we love? How can we show up for our families in stressful times, like when we're launching a business in startup mode? Ep 268Sex Potential, Stem Cell Therapy and Male Optimization with Dr. Amy Killen
Ok guys, time to get vulnerable for a minute… Clearly, as we get older our bodies inevitably change, but I never really thought I'd notice a shift in how I "showed up" in the bedroom, until I did. There's a happy ending to this story (Pun intended). A few weeks ago, I met Dr. Amy Killen, who's an expert in maximizing male sexual performance. PERFECT. TIMING. While she openly shared with me all the details about her work, I was on the edge of my seat. Some of the ideas were more complicated, but a few seemed like things I could experiment with over the next week. She mentioned beet root powder and talked about how it produces nitric oxide, and that I found out, is a good thing. A REALLY good thing. Energy. Stamina. Muscles. And yes, a full -- and I'm talking full -- erection. And gents… of course that's not everything, but it's a sign. In fact, Dr. Amy said….penises are like canaries in the coal mine, warning us about our overall cardiovascular health. After a week of taking this stuff (and no, this podcast isn't sponsored by a supplement company selling you the red juice), I noticed that my energy was different in almost every aspect of my life–not just the bedroom. Sex Potential, Stem Cell Therapy and Male Optimization with Dr. Amy Killen After my personal success, I knew I needed to have her on the podcast. Amy Killen is an anti-aging and regenerative medicine specialist focused on aesthetics and sexual medicine, including sexual optimization, skin regeneration, and hair restoration. In today's conversation, we're talking about the signs (both physical AND mental) that you might need someone like Dr. Amy in your life, simple things you can do on a daily basis to mitigate stress levels and improve your sexual performance, and some of the more advanced therapies Amy works with to help men look and perform at their best at any age! Dr. Amy Killen Podcast Highlights What does an optimized sex life look like for a man? How does something as simple as antiseptic mouthwash destroy our ability to perform in the bedroom? Why do as many as 75% of erectile dysfunction cases go untreated? What are the benefits of a healthy sex life outside the bedroom? Why does stress kill sex? What makes medication like Viagra or Cialis not work? How many men suffer from low testosterone in their 40s, and what can be done about it? Does having sex lead to more sex? What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and what is it used for? What are stem cells, and why should we care about them? Why don't we talk about our sexual health in a way that's real? How has shockwave therapy changed the game in terms of treating ED? Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? Ep 267Helping Your Kids Start A Business with Josh Felber
Ok fellas, raise your hand if your kids have come to you with a business idea 🙋🏼♂️ As an entrepreneur myself, having my kids show interest in starting a business is pretty exciting. Of course, I want them to explore whatever makes them happy. But secretly, I love the idea of them running their own thing. Maybe it's because it's something I know I'll be able to connect with them about. Can any of you relate? But how involved should we get? What's the right balance between helping them pursue their idea, and letting them make mistakes/figure things out on their own? Josh Felber - Helping Your Kids Start A Business Today I caught up with serial entrepreneur, Josh Felber, to talk all about it! Josh created his first real business at the age of 14 and has owned 15 more in the 30+ years since. Before the age of 25 he had become a millionaire and today he helps "parent-preneurs" achieve success, while living an integrated lifestyle. We talk about the different businesses his kids have started, including Gratitude Gear and Paleo Pets, and some really great tips for any parents who have a kid entrepreneur in the family :) Brotha James Podcast Highlights Where does religion need improvement? Ep 2665 Things I Learned from my Dad, Before I Lost Him with Brotha James
Today, I'm talking with my close friend Jeremy Reisig, a.k.a. Brotha James. He's been a hugely influential member of the Front Row Dads community. Why? It's simple: Jeremy has legendary relationships with his family. In our conversations over the years, I've been deeply moved by the stories he's shared–especially when he talks about the ways his dad, who recently passed away, showed up for him. 5 Things I Learned from my Dad, Before I Lost Him If you want to connect more deeply with your father (or any father figure in your life), as well as your kids (and who doesn't?), this episode is for you. Brotha James not only shares brilliant music, but what made his relationship with his dad so special. You'll learn about their traditions, how his dad treated his mother, and which actions spoke louder than words–up until the very end of his life. Brotha James Podcast Highlights The value of looking for fulfillment in every aspect of your life. How seeing other people's pain at a Tony Robbins event helped Brotha James truly appreciate and acknowledge how his father made him feel psychologically safe, loved, and important. How can we show up and be compassionate for people we love as they navigate pain, fear, and uncertainty? How Jeremy's father's kind, respectful, and acceptive approach to dying set the family up to survive it with less pain. What Jeremy's dad, a massive Beatles fan, learned from George Harrison and John Lennon's perspectives on life and death. The many ways we can look at adversity - including death. The value of having rituals with your children. How can we unlock love in the sadness of losing someone? How do we numb our sadness (or other feelings) in both unhealthy and healthy ways? What does a trap of avoidance look like, and how do we accidentally manipulate ourselves? How Jeremy's father pushed him to do better without ever being hypercritical. How can we show up for and support our kids, even when they get really into an activity you don't want to do (or aren't really that interested in)? How Jeremy's mom created incredible opportunities for his dad and made him feel loved. A question you can ask instead of "How was your day at school?" What makes someone a great listener? The times Jeremy was afraid of his dad–and how he reckoned with being disrespectful as a child in his adult life. Why Jeremy is so grateful that his dad taught him how to see the good in others, to listen more than speak, and to be a great partner. The importance of practicing being a good partner on a daily basis. Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? Ep 265Score Yourself in These 4 Areas (Spouse, Kids, Work, Health) with Dane Espegard
Fellas, here's an interesting one for you… How would your wife rate you on a scale from 1 to 10 in the areas of Work, Health, Kids and Marriage? That's one of the big questions during today's conversation with my buddy, Dane Espegard. Dane's a member of Front Row Dads, rock star relationship builder, and someone who is continuously improving in all 4 of these buckets. I know for me, it's pretty tough to nail all of these areas, all of the time... So, I wanted to know, what makes Dane's relationship with his wife and kids so strong - and how does he manage to play at such a high level in his personal and professional life at the same time? Dane drops a ton of wisdom on what does/doesn't work for him and his family. We talk about the importance of being attuned with your wife's emotional needs, the benefits of therapy, healthy forms of fighting, and much more! Dane Espegard Podcast Highlights Dane's experience with his parents getting divorced when he was in his 20s. Why my dog stands ON the table while we have dinner. The positive and negative sides of COVID. Why his family is going on vacation with horses. When Dane and his wife fight -- why, and what does his wife need more of in order to feel loved. How would your wife rate you in Work, Health, Kids, and Marriage? What do you and your wife need in order to feel intimately connected to one another? My goal to talk how I would if a therapist was watching. Why do Dane and his wife have such a great relationship? Why my 6 year old son started having nightmares after I had a big fight with Tatyana and what adjustments we had to make in our house. What are clarity breaks? Why community is your greatest survival tool. Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? Ep 264How to Identify Your Blind Spots as a Husband and Father with Nathanael Chawkin
Can you think back to a moment when you lost your cool with your wife or kids? What's going on when our emotions get the best of us? What if instead of defaulting to anger, judgement, defensiveness and frustration, we could better understand the feelings of everyone involved, and empathize more effectively with others' perspectives? Helping me answer these questions is Nathanael Chawkin, who specializes in interpersonal communication dynamics for both executive teams and families alike. I first started working with Nathanael one-on-one so that I could better understand my triggers; the things that really set me off. He's helped me tackle some of the toughest communication challenges in my life, and has given me the necessary tools and strategies to identify my biggest emotional blind spots as a husband and father. His approach to coaching leans on The Work of Byron Katie. If you aren't yet familiar with The Work, it consists of four questions that allow you to look at specific problems and see exactly what is bothering you in a whole new light. In today's conversation, we touch on a wide variety of topics, including Nathanael's unique upbringing in what he calls a "human potential experiment," how he masterfully uses self-inquiry in his coaching practice (and with me), and some of the breakthroughs we've achieved in our sessions together. You'll even get to hear us talk through a scenario in real-time, so you can get a taste of what it's really like to work with Nathanael! Gold Nuggets The benefits of a multi-spiritual upbringing. How he lived in a karate dojo for 2 years. The importance of owning your problems instead of trying to meditate or transcend them away. Why it's so easy to think people are judgmental when you're the one doing the judging. Ways people misinterpret The Work of Byron Katie. The 80/20 Rule to help you drop in to your own inner wisdom. A framework you can use to better understand what triggers you and transform feelings through inquiry. How to stop being your worst critic. How The Work is used in a real-life inquiry session. How The Work helps create safe places for the people we love. Big Questions Asked How can coaching help us get perspective and see all the different arguments around an issue? How can we use The Work of Byron Katie in our everyday lives? What are our basic defense mechanisms–and how can we defuse them when they don't serve us? Why can't we see our own blind spots without help? Where does healing come from, and how do we end patterns of trauma? Why do we have more control when it's us that needs to change, not our spouse or our children? Why is it so easy to stop treating ourselves like someone who is worthy of respect? Why is it so hard for us to ask for what we really want? Why do we need to practice the basics of inquiry when we're not in the moment? Where does transformation really come from? Ep 263Gifts to Win Your Spouse's Heart All Year Long with John Ruhlin
For a lot of guys, gift giving oftentimes lacks true meaning. How many holidays have you made a last minute purchase the night before, or decided to buy something just because it has an impressive sticker price? As if a more expensive gift will show your wife just how much you love her lol. Gifts should make your loved ones feel valued and appreciated, not forgotten and misunderstood. It's something we should do because we want to, not because we have to. And hey, I'll be the first to admit, I've definitely screwed it up on multiple occasions — so you're not in this alone! Gifts don't need to be bought, but they do need thought. Joining me today to talk all about it is my good friend John Ruhlin — a master at building relationships and winning hearts using his unique approach to strategic gifting. We hit on a bunch of topics, including intentional gifting, gifting fails, winning at Mother's Day, making your wife feel special, balancing business & family, and more! Gold Nuggets Why gifting alone can't save a sucky business and adds insult to injury in a struggling marriage. Why the bar is so low in business gift giving - and how to give much more intentional gifts in every area of life. The value of facilitating gift giving within your family. Childhood wounds that stick with us into adulthood. Big Questions Asked How can we better pick up on hints and clues when it comes to the intangible gifts that our partners want? Why is it so much harder to pick a great gift for our spouse than it is for a business partner or a client? What happens when we bring other people within families into our gift giving, thanks, and gratitude? How can we use the traumas we faced in childhood as we show up for our kids? Ep 262How to Play Off Your Partner's Parenting Strengths with Brandon Miller
As entrepreneurs and business owners, we've all taken tests like Myers-Briggs, DISC, and Core Values Index to better understand who we are and where we naturally shine. But so few of us have used tools like these to understand our strengths as parents, even though it's one of the most important roles in our lives! Today's guest, my friend Brandon Miller, is the co-author of Incredible Family: Discover Your Parenting Strengths and Raise Your Kids with Confidence. Not only is the book packed with great information, but it also includes a powerful parenting assessment tool to help you and your partner uncover what makes you uniquely great as parents. Brandon's really hit on something big with this book, as proven by the fact that he was voted Most Influential by the Front Row Dads Brotherhood after presenting this material at our last retreat. Also joining us is fellow Front Row Dad, Les McDaniel, who trains coaches that help parents and their children become stronger, more loving, and more peaceful. So what exactly does it mean to build an "incredible family" and how do we make it happen? That's what this discussion is all about. If you want to bring the joy back into your parenting and shift from being frustrated to fascinated, and from conflict to cooperation, this episode is a must-listen! PS: Want 2 free copies of Incredible Family? Write an honest review of the podcast, send a screenshot of your review to [email protected], and I'll send you and your spouse a copy in the mail. It's my way of thanking you for your support, and I know it'll make a big difference for you and your family. Gold Nuggets What readers can expect from Incredible Family. How understanding our strengths as parents can help us identify patterns and resolve conflicts. How Brandon's entrepreneurial experience informed his methodology as a parent. The value of raising kids who grow up confident (not arrogant). The importance of being more passionate about our families than our businesses. How reaffirming strengths amplifies them. Why inherent negativity bias constantly reaffirms what we're not - and the power of shifting away from this mindset. Why Brandon and Les said yes to Front Row Dads and why they're still in the Brotherhood. Big Questions Asked How do we partner with someone to give our children the five things they need? Do many parents have overlapping strengths? How do I make sense of my parenting assessment? Why don't our priorities as parents always align? How can we look for the shine in our kids' eyes to understand what's working and what isn't, in our families Why do so many parents lack confidence? Why aren't men leading the way on unity right now? What happens when we play to our partners strengths and show up as a true leader? Why does everyone need a coach? How can strengths assessments help us solve society's toughest challenges? How do we amplify what's good to silence what's not? Why can it be so hard for us to identify our true strengths? How does gratitude uncover strengths in other people? Ep 258Finding Financial Freedom, Lifestyle Investing & Family Cashflow with Justin Donald
For many of us, the money we make is directly related to the amount of time we put into something. When we are directly responsible for growing our businesses, writing books, or traveling to speaking events - to name just a few examples - we are putting time in to get money out. As we all know, this comes at a cost, and every hour we grind is an hour spent not focused on our families. My friend Justin Donald didn't just challenge this framework - he broke it, giving him the power to live the life he wants on his terms. Dubbed "The Warren Buffett of Lifestyle Investing" by Entrepreneur, he is a master of low-risk cash flow investments. 21 months before his 40th birthday, he drove enough passive income for him and his wife to both leave their jobs. In his new book, The Lifestyle Investor, he shares exactly how he negotiated deals with 100 companies and hit an eight-figure net worth while keeping his family at the center of everything. Today, Justin joins the podcast to talk about the meaning of money, share some of his biggest wins (and what he learned from some real failures), unique ways to invest, and what it truly means to achieve financial freedom. Gold Nuggets Justin's 10 commandments of investing Why you don't have to be at a certain level of financial success to become a lifestyle investor Why you don't always need to invest your own money to create cash flow and scale a business The value of taking someone's success and making it your own Why Justin opens his book with a story about losing a lot of money How to tell if a deal is a win-win The dangers of emotional investing The importance of health and community to living the life you want Big Questions Asked How do you balance needing to be all-in at times with honoring the lifestyle you want to live with your family? What happens when you separate your time from money? How do you live in congruence with what you're most passionate about? Where do you find unconventional investing opportunities? How did investing change in 2020? If you have $10,000 to invest right now, where should you put it? If you have $100,000 to invest right now, what should you do? Ep 257Growing Up Mormon, Rapid Business Growth & Saving The American Dream with Brock Blake
For high achieving Dads, it's far too common to get sucked into cycles of success. When we're addicted to being busy, it's easy to let ourselves think that we just need to write one more book or do one more round of speaking events – and providing for our families becomes our excuse to keep going. So, how do we get the job done AND show up for our families? Earlier this year, Brock Blake had to answer this question for himself like never before. After COVID-19 hit, his company Lendio became a massively valuable resource for small business owners, many of whom couldn't get access to PPP loans through their banks. This required Brock to pull 20-hour days for six straight weeks and proved to be ten times harder than anything else he'd ever done in his career. As Brock put it, "We changed our mission from fueling the American dream to saving the American dream." But how did he manage all of this, without sacrificing his family in the process? Today, Brock joins the podcast to talk about his journey, and to bust the myth that it's impossible to build a great business, while also having a great relationship with your wife and kids! Gold Nuggets The value of missionary work. The influence a Dad's behavior has on their kids. What a religious upbringing can teach you about life and business. How Brock scaled his company and onboarded hundreds of employees, while maintaining balance at home. How to navigate the stress and strain of long workdays. Brock's 3-part playbook for being a Dad that wins in business AND life. The importance of being present at work and at home. Ways to involve your kids in your business. Big Questions Asked What does the Blake family name mean to you? In what ways do our fathers influence us? Why should we expose our kids to discomfort at early ages? What did you learn from growing up as a Mormon? Tell us about the genesis story of Lendio and how that ties in to your mission trip to Uruguay? Why is the busy season so addictive? Is it possible to be both a great Dad AND a great businessman? What does your morning routine look like? How can we get better sleep, more often? Why is one-on-one time with our kids so important? When you look at what happened in 2020 as a dad and as a business owner, what's one thing you would like to make an improvement in when it comes to your family life?
