Ep 156How Do You Celebrate Good News with Your Partner? [Encore]
Patrick Cullinane is a serial entrepreneur who has started and sold multiple businesses and developed several software applications in the logistics and supply chain industries. Patrick also serves on the board of 1Life Fully Lived, a non-profit geared towards helping young people find their passion through the entrepreneurial spirit and to dream, plan and live their best lives. Sam Cullinane began her career climbing corporate ladders to achieve the rank of Chief of Staff to the President of an international five billion dollar company. Eventually, she also took to entrepreneurial endeavors – starting a few businesses and then joining Patrick to build and sell his largest business. Sam completely switched gears in 20 15 and is now a National iTunes charting songwriter and recording artist who has been invited to open for Jewel and has a song in a film released October 2017. Sam also serves as the President of a women's mastermind, Symmetry7. Sam and Patrick have been married for over twenty years and they would tell you they are one of the happiest couples they know. But they weren't always this happy. In fact, after ten years of marriage, they were ready to sign the divorce papers. During the first ten years of their marriage, they struggled through like most people do: trying to navigate life together without any real tools, realizing they were in many ways opposites, fighting often, having sex less and less, distrust and jealousy rearing their ugly heads, and what they believed was falling out of love. They were under tremendous pressure, as many families are these days, raising their two children and each of them pursuing their rigorous careers. In their tenth year of marriage, they decided to call it quits and filed for divorce. After a year apart, against all odds, they decided to get back together. This time they came with new insights including recognition of the things each of them brought to the relationship – good and bad. Both made the necessary changes to successfully start their next chapter. For the last ten years they've grown their love, their bond, and created an amazing life together. They became students of love and they never looked back. Their book, released July 2017, Bigger Love – is their story along with tips, tools, and tricks for taking your relationship to a higher, deeper, more satisfying level. Today, Pat & Sam join the podcast to talk about what makes your relationships stronger, happier, and sexier! Ep 150Community is Our Greatest Survival Tool
Calm & Prepared There is an order to the life priorities we carry as survivalists, and they apply whether or not we are in a "survival situation" or not. I think sharing this information with everyone can help organize thoughts and priorities for people in a way that makes them less stressful to think through. It is important that we solve problems related to these issues in this order. Circumstances don't change these priorities, although in certain situations some of them may not be fully available to achieve. Let's go down the list and see what needs to be done to check these boxes. *Trigger Warning* The purpose of sharing this information is to aid people in organizing their thoughts and to stay calm, not to be alarmist or sensational. Mike and I were educated as survivalists so much of this information is framed around not dying. Please do not take that as a sign that Mike or I are under the impression that civilization is about to collapse. We both believe strongly that that is not the case, and that sharing information like this can serve to provide confidence to our community. Remember that community is our greatest survival tool, if we take care of eachother during difficult times, we will all be fine.

Ep 144The Messed Up Relationship between Boys and Their Feelings with Dr. Kelly Flanagan
It's below zero in Chicago, and none of the boys are wearing coats. I'm driving the middle school carpool—two boys, two girls. The girls are each dressed in heavy winter coats, thick gloves, and knitted stocking caps. Both boys are wearing hoodies, with no outerwear. They're not abnormal amongst their peers. When we arrive at the school, almost every other boy will be dressed the same way. So, I ask them, "Why are the girls wearing coats, but you're not?" One of them responds with an answer that makes no sense. "It's not that cold out today." I decide to teach a little science. "The temperature is a constant in this experiment," I say, "you and the girls are feeling the same temperatures. Yet they are wearing coats, and you're not. So, what variable does explain why you aren't wearing coats?" There's a long pause. Then one of them says something that makes even less sense. "Because the lockers are small and it's hard to get coats into them?" There's a question mark at the end of his statement, as if he knows he's making it up. "Oh," I say in mock surprise, "the girls have larger lockers than the boys?" They are half-smiling and half-cringing now. My son Quinn makes the decision to get this thing over with as quickly possible, by telling the truth. "Dad, boys aren't supposed to admit they feel cold." For a middle school boy in the year 2020, it's okay to feel cold so long as you don't admit it. We've made great progress with our younger boys. We are increasingly aware that little boys have feelings and need to be able to express them just like girls. So, these days, most little boys are allowed to cry when wounded and to be scared when threatened. We give them that. However, by the time they reach middle school, they are apparently still expected to bury their most vulnerable emotions. Its okay to feel angry and aggressive, or tough and competitive, but it's not okay to feel weak or wounded. So, boys start cutting themselves off from much of their emotional data. They do what they have to do to not feel it, from drinking to drugging to gaming. To freezing. However, a winter coat is a public confession of vulnerability they are still not allowed to make. Is it any wonder boys are struggling so much right now? Their numbers are dwindling on college campuses. They are less and less inclined to get into long-term romantic relationships. They are exponentially more likely to fail to launch from their parents' homes. They are struggling to find vocations, but they report being happy anyway, as long as they have a screen in front of them. They are more anxious and depressed than ever, but they have trouble admitting it, until they are in such despair they can't hide it anymore. Like frostbite of the heart. As we approach the school, I tell the boys about a conversation I had with a man at a retreat I led a couple of years ago. We were talking about how, when he was growing up, you were only considered to be a "real" man if you weren't afraid of anything around you. In other words, you were only a real man if you didn't feel the cold. I told the boys in my carpool that I have a different definition of what it means to be a real man. A real man isn't afraid of anything within him. A real man can have the whole human experience going on within him. He can feel shame and sorrow and fear and anxiety. He can feel hurt. He can feel rejected. He can feel lonely. He can feel doubt and uncertainty and confusion. He can feel tender. He can feel love and gratitude and joy and grace. He can feel ordinary and lost and hopeful and hopeless. A real man can feel cold. He can feel it all. The whole human thing. A real man can feel all of that and not be afraid of it, which is to say, instead of resisting it or hiding it or running away from it, he can approach it and name it and show it. He can advertise it, whether by wearing his heart on his sleeve, or a coat on his back. The relationship between boys and their feelings has been messed up for too long. We're doing better with our younger boys. We must do better with our adolescent boys. The outerwear industry is depending upon us.

Ep 129Army Men Meditate
For several months now, my 5-year old has been playing with Army Men characters. We set up epic battles together, and then he typically tells me something like, "My guy is going to snipe your guy!" His army always seems to win — by a long shot! I've loved this time with him. And then I saw a dark side. Let me begin by saying... I have no problem with my sons playing "Good guy, bad buy" games. I have no problem with my sons talking about, or acting out fighting scenes, as they often do with toy sticks, swords or other weapons they manufacture. I have no problem with my sons learning how to protect themselves and others, figuratively and literally. I have no problem with any child learning about the warrior that lives within them, and all of us. As a kid, I got tremendous value from studying martial arts. I loved the karate kid movie. I played cops and robbers. In church I learned about evil, and the forces that stood against it. What I do have a problem with is... Senseless violence. I do have a problem when fighting has no moral compass. I have a problem with attacking others from a place of anger or revenge. "An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind." ― Mahatma Gandhi I see a problem when fighting becomes an addiction, an identity, and the only place to feel and fuel power. "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster." ― Friedrich Nietzsche I have a problem if peace isn't part of the conversation. "Dad, how do soldiers killing each other solve the world's problems?" ― Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes As Ocean played more and more with the army men, I realized there was only one conversation happening. That conversation was about dominating and destroying me. He had only one story in his mind -- win at all costs. While I want my son feel like a winner, in this case, I felt the story he was living out daily needed some expansion. To add texture and open his awareness around this subject, my wife and I decided to add some new characters to the story. For Christmas, one of his presents were army men who instead of carrying bazookas, were doing yoga :) *Click here to see how Ocean reacted! It's priceless.
