Ep 256Teaching Kids about Money with Adam Stock

Very few kids understand money, investing, charitable giving, or financial literacy by the time they finish high school. As parents, a lot of us learned about money the hard way, through struggles and tough decisions, but our experiences don't always make it easier to teach our kids how to make great financial decisions. When COVID-19 brought in-person schooling to a crashing halt, family wealth manager Adam Stock decided to be part of the solution. Rather than complain about how lousy online education was, he created Money Mondays. Over a series of Zoom calls for kids aged 10-15, he and a number of incredible guests gave presentations on a wide range of financial concepts, including the value of saving, investments, charitable giving, and much more. Today, Adam and I are talking about how formal education fails so many kids when it comes to finances, the issues parents face when we talk about money with our kids, and the power of charitable giving. We also introduce the best of Money Mondays, a condensed, 3-week series of one-hour classes Adam will be hosting in January. If you have kids ages 10-15 who you think would be a great fit for this, please text WEALTH to (512) 379-6952, or email [email protected] to find out how you can enroll today. Gold Nuggets How and why Adam started teaching a group of kids about money when COVID hit. Important topics to focus on when teaching your kids about money. Teaching kids that making money and becoming successful doesn't happen overnight. Teaching kids about philanthropy. Why money equals responsibility. Adam's family rituals around charitable giving and gratitude. Find out how your kid can participate in Money Monday's this January! How to make a donation in your kids' name this holiday season in an impactful way. Big Questions Asked What is Money Monday? Why doesn't school teach our kids about money? What financial topics are important for our kids to learn? How can talking about money help us understand what our kids value and believe in? If your kid had a briefcase full of money, what cause would they give it to? Don't miss the exercise Adam gave to a group of kids that gets them thinking about charitable giving. Should you give money to panhandlers? Adam's answer may surprise you! Will your kids have the same value around money as you do? Ep 255Fight For Together - The Largest Family To Hike the Appalachian Trail

What are you doing to create structure and stay productive as you navigate the chaos of your life, both at home and at work? How do you take a stand when you need to, have tough conversations, and take big risks to truly understand everything that's out there? If you're looking for answers to questions like these, today's conversation - one of my favorites I've had all year - is for you. I'm speaking with my friend Ben Crawford - someone with a truly deep understanding of how to challenge perspectives and push for more. He ran ultramarathons with his young kids, lived intentionally for a year with no rules, and hiked the Appalachian Trail with his wife and their six children - something he wrote about in his newest book, 2,000 Miles Together. Even if you're not quite ready to commit to an odyssey like Ben's, if you want to know what you and your family are truly capable of, this episode is for you. We explore what it means to achieve your family's full potential, the importance of questioning the status quo, and how to stop your ego from defining who you are. Gold Nuggets How to bring the same intentionality and sense of purpose you apply to your work life to your family. What makes writing a book feel so different from writing on social media. How to show your kids that there's more to life than being praised. Why waiting for a dollar amount to prioritize something means you're never going to make that change. How pattern interrupts and dramatic contrasts erase entitlement - and what happened when Ben and his wife hiked the Appalachian Trail. Big Questions Asked Why is it so easy for us to put our home life on autopilot? How do our beliefs reinforce themselves over time, and how do they limit us? What do awards mean, and how should we handle awards when it comes to our kids? How do you get your kids to appreciate what you have in life and adopt a mindset of gratitude, regardless of how you're doing financially? How do we value time over money in both theory and practice? Why does asking someone "What do you need?" actually put more of a burden on that person - and how can we take action instead? How does saying "I love you" become a form of gaslighting in relationships? What can you do this week - not two decades from now - to prioritize your relationships or make your life better? Ep 2542020's Biggest Wins with John Kane and Mike Higgins

This year, practically everyone experienced some form of failure. A lot of things that didn't work, didn't take hold, or set us back as we navigated extraordinary challenges in our personal health, our marriages, and our ability to parent. But why fixate on that? Why not explore what did work? Today, Front Row Dad members Mike Higgins, John Kane and I are getting together for an honest conversation about our biggest wins. With the intention of helping you win at home, at work, and in the areas of life most important to you, we're digging in on what worked in our community, how our pillars evolved, how our teammates and friends show up for us, and the powerful decisions we were able to make in 2020. Gold Nuggets The importance of building teams where people are complementary and able to support each other. How to define your values and get clarity about what you do and don't want. How to tighten bonds and strengthen connection as you build and grow groups. How to adapt your operations in the face of challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. Big Questions Asked How do challenges help us stay accountable and make breakthrough achievements? What can we do to show gratitude and reward people? When is it time to make adjustments in your world or end relationships that don't serve us? How do we make the transfer of wisdom more available within groups? How can we (and our pillars) evolve as the world evolves? Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? With all that's going on in the world and the challenges we're facing as husbands, parents, and entrepreneurs, how do we make the time this year to meaningfully celebrate? We're exploring how to navigate a world full of more challenges (and information) than ever before, how to have impactful conversations during tough times, and how to not just be grateful, but to grow throughout them. How meeting people in the middle allows us to rise together. How to talk to your family about diversity. Big Questions Asked How does personal development help us evolve as men over time? Why is emotional intelligence and learning to manage our internal condition so important? How do you stay empathetic when addressing conflict or simply while having important conversations with people in your life? Ep 250Creating Morning Routines with Your Kids

Nov 20, 202015 min

Ep 249Building Family Businesses at Any Age with Ryan and Carter Waugh

So many parents who own businesses want to help their children dream big. We want our kids to be able to turn their visions into reality, no matter what they want to do. However, it isn't always easy to teach those skills. You may not be able to tell if your kids are serious when they come to you with an idea. You also may not know how to help them get the clarity they need to take that idea seriously. If you're wondering how to teach problem solving, encourage your kids, and instill the spirit of entrepreneurship along the way, you're going to love today's conversation. I'm speaking not just with Ryan Waugh — a winemaker, entrepreneur, and father of two — but also his son Carter. Carter came to Ryan with the idea for his product, Critts shoes, when he was eight years old. Instead of being dismissive or thinking of it as a pipe dream, Ryan helped Carter create his first business plan and file his first patent. Two years later, they've run a successful Kickstarter and raised over $40,000, manufactured products that will be shipping soon, and recently got picked up by Nordstrom. It's an incredible story, and a must-listen not just for dads, but your kids too! Gold Nuggets Why you don't have a million things to do - just the thing you have to do right now. How a family is a microcosm of a community - and how stronger families can create stronger communities. How to teach your children to create business plans. Why it's so important to treat your kids' ideas as more than just white noise. The powerful ripple effect of young entrepreneurship. Big Questions Asked How do you run a successful business, show up for your family, and have time for it all? How do you show your kids that their biggest, brightest, and best ideas can become reality? What can parents do to create loving, positive relationships between siblings? How does entrepreneurship help us push forward and address our toughest challenges as a species and a society? Ep 248The Lessons Kids Learn Through Daily Chores

Today is our preview clip of the week, which is basically a short 10 min clip that we pulled from the full length interview. If you like what you hear in this bite sized segment, you may want to check out the full length episode on Wednesday at FrontRowDads.com/249 About Today's Guest The story of Waugh Family Wines is one of Hopes, Dreams, Fate, Passion and True Love! Ryan Waugh was born and raised in Newberg, Oregon and Crystal (Kettle) Waugh was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Ryan had aspirations to be a surgeon and followed that dream to Santa Clara University where he graduated with degrees in Biology and Chemistry. Crystal enjoyed business and fashion and attended Texas A&M where she achieved a bachelor degree in Marketing and Business Administration. After graduating Crystal entered the Executive Training program at Neiman Marcus. Quickly climbing the ladder, soon Crystal was in charge of the college recruiting program. During Ryan's freshman year at Santa Clara, a friend's father shared a bottle of wine with Ryan from the year he was born. The bottle was a 1976 Stags Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Lot 2, which hangs in a shadow box in the Waugh's living room. This wine sparked an intense passion within Ryan who found a job working in a vineyard near Santa Clara University. During his sophomore year, Ryan attended a career fair at UC Davis and landed a part time job at a Napa Valley Winery, Chateau Potelle. After graduating, Ryan moved to Napa and became the full time cellar master at Chateau Potelle. As fate would have it, Crystal was recruiting Santa Clara students on the campus in the late 90s for Neiman Marcus while Ryan was still attending the University. They were not destined to meet quite yet. It was not until March 5 of 2004 where their paths would finally cross. A girlfriend of Crystal had her bachelorette party in Napa Valley. The group of 10 girls checked into their hotel in Yountville, The Villagio. Ryan was pouring his "boutique" wines in the lobby of the hotel. Crystal walked up to Ryan and asked for some Zinfandel, they were engaged to be married a year later. Together, Ryan and Crystal have grown their Waugh Family Wines business from the 100 cases and one label produced out of Ryan's garage starting in 2000 to 4000 cases produced, consisting of 3 different labels, a sparkling wine called Crystal and grapes grown from 17 different vineyards between Napa and Sonoma. They also built a custom crush winery called The Caves at Soda Canyon, located on 41 acres in the Napa Valley which is the home to 4 first generation winemaking families. The Caves is where Waugh Family Wines produces their wines. Access the Full Interview Want access to the full interview, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? Ep 246The Power of Mentorship with Wayne Herring

Do you have a great mentor in your life? Were there people in your childhood, at school, or at work who pushed you to new heights and inspired you to dream bigger? When you've faced real challenges, who showed up for you in your moment of need? If you answered yes, you already know that mentors are extraordinary people. They can lead us to new opportunities, help us triumph over the toughest things we face in life, and push us to be better fathers, husbands, and business owners. As I interviewed today's guest, Wayne Herring, it became clear to me just how impactful mentors can be. Wayne is the founder of Business Builder Camp, where he helps guys grow businesses to serve their families more efficiently, but he didn't get there alone. He is living proof that mentors of all kinds help us thrive in good times and survive in bad ones. We're talking about the incredible lessons we've learned from others, and how you can use this wisdom to step up your game as a human being and show up for the people you love, too! Gold Nuggets How to articulate your three-year vision for your life in business and at home — even if you suck at predicting the future. How to rebalance your life when it feels like everything is crashing down. How to support people you love — including yourself — through health crises and conflicts within your family. Taking time away from social media. The personal decision to give up alcohol — does it result in less fun? Big Questions Asked Why do mentors have such powerful impacts upon us at every stage of life? How can we have more positive relationships with social media and our smartphones? What resources are available to men whose children are struggling with eating disorders? When loving on people, when is it right to push, and when is it right to give space and back away? trailer

Today is our preview clip of the week, which is basically a short 10 min clip that we pulled from the full length interview. If you like what you hear in this bite sized segment, you may want to check out the full length episode on Wednesday at FrontRowDads.com/246 About Today's Guest As the founder of Business Builder Camp, Wayne Herring has helped men across the country grow their businesses into successful and thriving enterprises. However, there is so much more to his story than simply "coach" or "consultant." Wayne has worked as a specialty drilling and blasting contractor and an organic farmer. He has run ultra marathons, gone on epic road trips, and is a 1997 Montana state arm wrestling champion. He loves to hunt and farm, but he also enjoys yoga and meditation. Some have described Wayne as a renaissance man, but he thinks that is a strange term for the son of a coal miner. Having grown a business and coached other business owners, Wayne understands we all have times in our lives where we are blocked. He founded Business Builder Camp to help men overcome obstacles in growing their businesses while creating fulfilling and enjoyable lives. He achieves this both through 1:1 coaching and participating in group retreats. Wayne pushes the members of his Camp to see new possibilities, discover new tools, and identify the gifts they didn't know they had. Additionally, Wayne is passionate about gathering his clients together at lodges or his farm for fun, friendship, adventure, and rest. Ep 242Sex Magic, the 3-Minute Game & Relationship Board Meetings with Alexa Martinez

How's your sex life? 1-10 scale, if 10 means you're totally on fire! How would you wife rate it? When was the last time you had a totally honest chat about it? Many guys think it's great (and their partner may or may not agree), while other guys wish it were 10x better. A few years ago, for me personally, my wife and I were lacking something -- spoken clearly, things were predictable, routine and boring. Like anything in life, having an extraordinary sex life takes focus, learning, experimenting and making adjustments along the way. I decided it was time to up my game. I started putting in the work, learning as much as I could, and having open conversations about it. I read books, listened to podcasts, talked with friends and guess what -- I didn't know everything. Go figure. Since then, our sex life has caught fire. True intimacy, on every level, is such an important part of a happy marriage, yet there are very few men who are having honest conversations about it, which is why I've invited sex and relationship coach, Alexa Martinez, on the podcast. We're talking about why sex falls out of alignment between couples and the steps you can take to start transforming your sex life right now! Gold Nuggets The four buckets of sex, and why they're so important to have in every relationship. How to create - and why to create - a sex magic practice. The benefit of having as many difficult conversations as possible at the beginning of a relationship, rather than when issues arise. How to host a relationship board meeting. How to bring the positive energy from a killer sex life into other aspects of your life. Big Questions Asked What is tantra, and how can you incorporate it into your practice, sexual or otherwise? What steps can you take if you realize that your sex life isn't satisfactory, and how do you bring your partner on this journey? Why is it so common for a powerful sex life to fall out of alignment? What does it look like when a couple's communication is off the charts? Why is it so hard for people to talk about sex, and how does this complicate our lives? Ep 240Awakening Ourselves To A New Regeneration with Ryland Engelhart

Over seven years ago, food activist, entrepreneur, filmmaker, and Café Gratitude founder Ryland Engelhart took a trip to New Zealand, where he saw a panel presentation that moved him to tears. He was convinced that there was simply too much carbon in the atmosphere. Even if humanity successfully reduced its emissions and decarbonized transportation, he likened the experience to slowly driving off a cliff. But after this presentation, he saw another - and it helped him truly understand the connection between nature and humanity. He finally saw a way forward, a way to make the world better in seven generations, and could envision a pathway to the future that didn't end in catastrophe. Over the next seven years, Ryland put together the Kiss The Ground documentary to share this discovery with as many people as possible, and I've been excited about this film for a long time. Narrated by Woody Harrelson and now streaming worldwide on Netflix, the film has been called "The key to combating climate change" by Forbes and lauded for inspiring "A rare feeling of hope" by the New York Times. My family and I watched the film twice in the last week, and I'm astounded by what Ryland has achieved. In our conversation today, Ryland and I discuss the incredible journey that led to him making the movie, and how to consciously think about the deep connection between the health of our bodies and the planet in your daily practice. We explore how to use these concepts in your life, in nature, in your business, and in your family to create sustainable growth. As Dads and entrepreneurs, it's on us to protect and heal our families and the planet, and Ryland is issuing a call to arms in service of our planet. Gold Nuggets What Ryland learned over the seven years he spent making Kiss The Ground. How a presentation about carbon emissions and symbiosis helped Ryland connect the dots between the health of our bodies, our environment, and our planet and inspired his mission. How Ryland is paying homage to an urgent, pressing story with ancient roots through his work as an activist. Why we are all waking up to the fact that things aren't going well in our food system - and why this is a powerful opportunity for change. Big Questions Asked How can we use the principles of regeneration to heal ourselves and our planet? What can we do to make ourselves more effective storytellers? How can we help others make a commitment to their own health and the health of our planet? Is learning imprinted upon us, or are we enlightened by wisdom when we hear, see, or feel something? Why should regeneration matter to a Dad who hears this and says to himself, "I'm not a farmer," and what roles can they take to protect and provide for their families and the planet? How much time do we have left to prevent the sixth mass extinction? Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? If you're like many high achieving Dads, you probably know a thing or two about setting goals. But where a lot of guys struggle, is when it comes to creating and developing goals as a couple. What happens if you're a goal setter, but your partner isn't? This can be a big point of contention in a relationship. But when you and your spouse are able to fully understand each other's core values, even when they don't totally match, it can allow your relationship to thrive. Joining me today to talk about this is my good friend Geoff Woods. Geoff is the Vice President of The ONE Thing and the host of The ONE Thing podcast. He's on a mission to help people better invest their time and get better results – in all areas of life. And if they're not, well, he knows how to get you back on track. Today's conversation is a great one. We're discussing the importance of goal setting as a couple and the impact it can make in your life. Last year, Tatyana and I attended a couples' goal setting retreat led by Geoff and his business partner Jay Papasan, and we experienced MAJOR breakthroughs. Ep 224How to Watch Porn with Your Partner with Vanessa Marin [Encore]

E

Are you wondering what it's like to watch porn with your partner? Vanessa and Xander Marin explain how to! I'm a fan of sex. So is my wife. But I wish we were more insync. I go to bed early. She goes to bed late. I work during the day when she's ready to play. Sound familiar? When Tatyana and I are turned on at the exact same moment, it's fireworks, and it's also rare. Let me be honest, lately our sex life has been bonkers. It's been passionate, fun and sexy as hell (this is after 14 years together). In the past decade, there have been many times when I felt "This is probably the best it'll ever be." How ignorant of me. To think I knew everything. To think we'd explored the depths of our marriage to it's fullest extent, to think I had somehow mastered sex. WTF. Boy was I wrong. The last couple years I've been learning about things that prove the proves -- I know what I don't know (I've heard about Tantra, but what the hell is it), but mostly, most stuff I don't know what I don't know (Wait...what did just say, this is the first time I'm hearing about this!) The latter happens so often, I'm both frustrated by it (because I feel ignorant) and inspired by it (because there's so much I can do). So...in the spirit of constant and never ending improvement, let's talk about sex. Let's talk about it, because when sex is amazing, your marriage is better, and that is at the core of being a great dad to your kids. Happy dad, happy mom, happy kids. So without further ado, here's a little preview to what's covered in my chat with the sex expert Vanessa Marin and her husband Xander… Dealing with mismatched sex drives Who's supposed to initiate? How can we bring adventure into the bedroom? The impact of porn (and how much could be good for you) And lots more… Enjoy the show! And if you dig it, please leave a rating/review -- it means the world to our team, and our guests. QUOTE "Every single couple has mismatched sex drives. There's not a single couple out there where both partners want sex at the same time or way." - Vanessa Marin "There is no such thing as being universally good at sex." - Vanessa Marin PEOPLE MENTIONED Vanessa Marin Xander Marin EPISODE RESOURCES VM Theraphy Insta , Facebook, Twitter ABOUT OUR GUESTS Vanessa is a licensed psychotherapist with bachelor's degrees in human sexuality and sociology from Brown University, a master's degree in counseling psychology, and two decades of experience working with thousands of couples. Ep 207Unlock Your Love for Your Family

Yesterday, my family interrupted my work countless times. For months, it has been this way. The kids schooled from home during the lockdown. Now they're mostly summering at home, too, as most of their typical summer programs are still on lockdown. Every few minutes, there is something they need. "Dad, where is the soft bread?" "Can you log me on to the computer?" "What's for lunch?" "Do I really have to go outside?" "Can we come back in and watch a movie?" "I've only been outside for thirty minutes?" "Can I come back in after thirty-five minutes?" "Daddy, lookit!" Yesterday, I interrupted my work for them begrudgingly. I tried to hide it. I tried to be patiently responsive. I didn't yell. I didn't shame. I didn't tell them how much I wanted to be left alone. After all, they didn't ask to be a child in the age of coronavirus. So, I thought I did a pretty good job not punishing them for their circumstance. I subtly gritted my teeth, smiled a little tightly, and got through it without doing anything that might warrant a therapy appointment somewhere down the road. This morning, though, during my meditation, I saw something else. I saw that yesterday I'd been on autopilot, prioritizing my work over my family. Yes, some days this absolutely has to happen—boundaries are a good and necessary thing sometimes. However, yesterday wasn't one of those days for me. Yesterday, my work was interruptible, but I'd absentmindedly chosen to see them as the interruption of my work life, rather than seeing my work as an interruption of my family life. So, today, I set the intention of interrupting my work for them gladly. When they interrupted me, I chose to see it as an opportunity to attend to the people l care about most. Several "interruptions" in, my wife looked at me with a grateful smile and said, "You love us this morning, don't you?" The truth is, I don't love them any more than yesterday. I've simply set the intention of responding to them so that my love can actually be seen and felt. In the end, intentionality is as important as love, because it's the key that unlocks our affection for our people. There are lots of ways to be intentional about loving our people better. Meditation. Reading. Therapy. But I can't think of a better way to be intentional about this most important of endeavors than the upcoming "Evolve as a Father" Front Row Dads Online Summit. Every time I've met in person with a Front Row Dad, I've come away a more intentionally loving father and husband. I've come away unlocked. And I know a few thousand pixels between us isn't going to change that. I'll be there on August 20. I hope you will be too. Let's get unlocked.
