Ep 285E285: You Know Everything Until You Don’t” – Mary McGuigan Interview
Mary’s and my conversation was unexpected and informative. She decided to change her career after she’d had children, when she realized that she wanted to feel more noticed in her life, both by others and by herself. She had always had a passion for color and adventure and followed her heart into starting a new business as an image and wardrobe consultant. While she tapped into the psychology behind dressing well, there is a presence in her, an authenticity and attitude of service towards her clients, that sets her apart. I hope you’ll join us. KEY TAKEAWAYS- It’s good to know the rules, but it’s also good to know when to toss the rules and go by your instincts. You learn the difference through practice. Dress for the life that you want, not the life that you have. It’s a well-known adage for a reason – it helps to reset your self-confidence on a subliminal level. Vibrationally, visibility is opportunity. When someone comes and taps your shoulder…that all has to do with visibility.” There is no timeline for any part of your life. You realize things when you realize things. BEST MOMENTS “Every client that I’ve had, I’ve always had something in common with them, we’ve always been aligned in some way.” “Colors help other people see you at your best.” “Your loved ones know when you’ve made (an effort). It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing, they can see when the effort is being made.” “I don’t think there are enough Madonnas in the world. You can change that name to Beyonces, Nicki Minajs, whatever you want to change that name to. Culturally, women are shyer, they’re more withdrawn, they don’t boast about their achievements. I wanted to help more women be seen in the world.” ABOUT THE GUEST Mary is a former accountant who realized that she needed to change careers because she had always felt invisible. When she looked through her journal, she realized that two words kept recurring in her writing: colour, and image. Given her experience in hospitality and other parts of the service industry, and her desire to help women gain confidence in their lives, she found her fit (pun intended) as a personal stylist and wardrobe consultant. She lives in Northern Ireland with her family. Ep 284E284: “Dreaming about Swimming” – With Ryan Rae Harbuck
The thing with life-changing accidents is that they change you, forever. And when you’re a teenager and are paralysed after a head-on car crash, if you are lucky enough to wake up, you find yourself at a crossroadMy guest for this episode, Ryan Rae Harbuck, found herself at this exact place. And whether it’s because she describes herself as having a “stubborn” personality, or being a lifelong athlete, she made the decision early on that she would do what she could to get back to the life that she wanted to live, to do the things she had always wanted to do. She has been insistent about creating meaning from what others may characterise as her “worst moments”, and has lived a focused, intentional life full of personal meaning. As an adult, she’s had a career as a teacher – first as a high school sciences teacher, then as a swim coach – personally, I think this helps her distill the lessons she’s learned into perfectly-contained stories. Please join me and get to know Ryan, who is one of the funniest, determined, most optimistic people I’ve ever met. KEY TAKEAWAYS- to be free, you need to find a way to accept that you can’t change the way others perceive you. You are worthy of the life that you want; just through your lived experience, you have something to teach others. The meaning that you make out of the things that happen to you doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else. If you’re doing something that you really want to do – it won’t matter if you fail. If the regret is taken out of it, all that can come out of it is joy. BEST MOMENTS - “My body is different, so I need to swim differently. I would say that it took about a dozen years -- that I needed to change things in the pool if I wanted to get more out of it.” “We shouldn’t have to have bad things happen to us in order to do good things.” “Being a mom means a lot of yourself…it doesn’t get taken away, but it evolves a little bit, and so I don’t think I have a lot of things that I would call my own.” “Everything that we have is (really) precious; that comes down to the people in our lives, the days that we’re given, the nature – every single piece of it. And wanting to be the best for every bit of it.” ABOUT THE GUEST Ryan was born and raised in Colorado. She recently completed and self-published her memoir, “When I Grow Up, I Want to Be a Chair”. When she was 16 years old, she was involved in a serious car accident that left her paralyzed from the chest down. As she began the recovery process, she realized had an advantage as an athlete – she was used to practicing something and improving over time. She faced her physical recovery the same way -- practicing her rehabilitation until she was able to get back to the things she loved to do, and the life she wanted to lead. From that moment, she understood she could focus on building an intentional life. Ryan is a wife and mother, a swim coach, a teacher, a motivational speaker, and an outdoor enthusiast. Ep 283E283: “Life is a Michelin-Starred Buffet” – Payman Lorenzo Interview
This week’s guest is passionate – about life, about the role of business in creating positive change in the world, about making every day an adventure. Payman seems like he’s done everything. He has lived in several countries, speaks several languages, is self-employed, and is excited about being alive. We talk about life being a series of spiritual lessons, what you can and can’t control, about making your life impactful in the ways it can be. KEY TAKEAWAYS- Inspiration can happen anywhere including in the most “regular” occurrences like washing dishes; you need to be willing to follow it whenever it calls. - Happiness is nobody’s responsibility but our own. We have a responsibility to our own souls to find and create our own. Your dreams are often a long-term investment. It’s like a baby, you must feed it and care for it before it begins to pay off. Keep the goal in sight. BEST MOMENTS “I see life as a buffet…I want to try as many dishes as possible.” “Follow your heart, follow something that…keeps it alive, makes it stronger day by day and minute by minute. That’s where the magic happens.” “We all need to make money, but let’s do it in a way that’s meaningful, impactful and purposeful.” “I’m not afraid of dying. I’m not saying that I want to die today, but that I know when this life is over, it’s not game over.” ABOUT THE GUEST Payman is a serial entrepreneur who has lived in 10 countries on four continents. He speaks six languages. He is the founder of a movement called Leaders with a Heart and the podcast of the same name. He fully believes that capitalism can be a force for good and helps his clients build their businesses with a heart, a mission, and a purpose. Payman’s specialty is in e-commerce, but he is also launching a brand of products made from sustainable leather. He has made a commitment to donate one pair of eyeglasses to a person in need for each unit sold. He has an associate degree in international business from Seneca College in Ontario Canada and is self-employed as a marketing consultant. Ep 282E282: “Give Yourself Permission” Nic Aguirre of Apex Mind Coaching
Nic calls himself the “high performance hypnotist”. In our conversation we talk about his quest for a deeper meaning and how an inner restlessness took him into the halls of academia. One day, he was invited to go see a hypnotist at a show and became so fascinated by what he watched that he began to study it in every spare minute. Slowly he began to transition to his true calling, coaching others to achieve their personal and professional goals – wherever they are feeling stuck – and helping them to blast through the rock of their habits. KEY TAKEAWAYS- there are concrete, measurable steps you can take to achieve your dreams – take notes from people who have already achieved what you want, see what they are doing differently than you, and plan to close that gap. Hypnosis helps to relax you to go layers below the conscious, critical mind so that new “programming” can be set and help you overcome the obstacles that have been in your way. To become the person you want to be, think about other times you’ve solved other problems for yourself. What are the qualities you have that helped you solve that past problem? How could those same qualities help you cross the next bridge? BEST MOMENTS - “A big part of what I do is ‘see it, believe it, become it’.” “I’m human, you’re human, I do have those holes in me, I talked about the career void and that purpose hole that’s in there…but what happens when you finally fill that hole is you discover that there was another hole next to or underneath that one…the difference now I now feel equipped to handle it.” “Consider the advice but then check your gut…. does your body align with it, do you vibe with that?” “What is the challenge that makes you who you are and who are you on the other side of that?” ABOUT THE GUEST Nic Aguirre, aka Nic Nosis, lives in Austin Texas. He has a background in academia, but for the past several years has concentrated on becoming a certified hypnotherapist. Ep 281E281: The Door We Call God – Jeffery C. Olsen Interview
I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that Jeffery is one of the most humbling guests we’ve ever had on the show. He has taken one of the most tragic things that can happen to a fellow human – the death of half of his family in a devastating car crash – and let him lead him on a journey of healing and trying to help the world. In our conversation, he goes into detail about his experiences after the accident, and how he realised that we might be living heaven on earth. Jeffery has a sense of humour and humility and beyond that, he is a shining example of radical hope and acceptance in action. KEY TAKEAWAYS- if we could consider each other as part of the human family and aim to care for one another and work through our disagreements rather than shutting each other out, we could heal so much of what feels so disconnected in the world. - choosing joy is just that: a choice. It might be difficult at first and feel very counter-intuitive, but joy is like a muscle. It gets stronger with practice. - listening can be one of the most spiritual experiences and services you can do. It requires complete presence to be with another person and not be fast-forwarding until the point where you get to talk. - replace the word “devil” with “ego”. “Get behind me, ego.” BEST MOMENTS (Jeffrey’s personal mantra) “I am a powerful, loving manifestation of the divine creator”. “Wisdom is intelligence applied. I have the knowing, but have I done anything about it?” “I don’t claim that I can go about healing people with cancer…but I do claim to go about and love them and walk with them as they go and deal with whatever their journey is, which is perfect, even if it looks completely different than mine or anyone else’s.” “I don’t know if anything is out of order; I think there is a divine order to all of it, if I’m willing to see it, open my eyes and see it.” ABOUT THE GUEST Jeffery was born and raised in the Rocky Mountains of Utah. He is an author, a speaker, a creative director, a spiritual keeper, and a shaman. Most importantly, he considers himself a man, a human being, who tries to be of service in the ways he can. In 1997, Jeff and his whole family (his wife and two young boys) were in a car accident. His wife and one of his children were killed on impact, and Jeff himself was seriously injured – a small selection of what he dealt with was a broken back, his left leg needing to be amputated above the knee, and a collapsed lung. But before he knew what his road to recovery would entail, he left his body and crossed over to the other side, where he was told he had to go back. From that moment, Jeffery was set on a spiritual path. He studied every tradition he could think of, and in his speeches and one-on-one mentoring work, he tries to help people cross over to the other side of their own obstacles. Beyond his public speaking and his individual coaching, Jeff is a best-selling author of several books. He has spent his life in the pursuit of joy and spiritual freedom. He has remarried and enjoys being a family man. Ep 280E280: “Listen to Those What Ifs ” – Ani Rich Interview
Ani and I have a fascinating conversation about life, purpose, and honesty. She will be the first to tell you that she wants to get better at certain things, but truly she is incredibly focused, loving, and real about her path and the ways she wants to connect with other humans. She has an easy gentleness about her, a joy, and an energy that fills the room. This conversation will fill your cup. KEY TAKEAWAYS Finding out the things that makes you feel balanced and at ease, even if they’re not shared by anyone else you know, you need to hang on to those and nurture them. If I don’t accept that I have certain triggers, then I’m not truly seeing myself. When we are going through emotional pain, why do we think we can bounce back the next day? Our children are our mirrors. Other humans are our mirrors. BEST MOMENTS “I can have compassion (for someone), but still be detached from their pain. And because I am detached from their pain, I can create a safe space for them….so then, it’s about them and not me.” “Pema Chodron says every time you catch (yourself) judging someone, just say ‘just like me’. ...it removes the judgment. You have to fully let it go and try to see it from their eyes.” “We need to balance being and becoming.” “At some point I wanted to believe my own life, so I became curious.” ABOUT THE GUEST Ani Rich is a mother, a wife, a yoga teacher and author and a life coach. Ep 279E279: “Have Compassion for What it Means to Be a Human Being” – Nadjeschda Taranczewski Interview
Nadja is not your run-of-the-mill life coach. She has a gritty optimism, a determination to take all the things that have happened to her clients and show them ways to work through it, one by one changing the world. Her background as half German, a quarter Russian, and a quarter Polish, has made her want to shine lights on the traumatized parts of our human emotions so that they can fully heal. Our conversation encompasses the energetic power of money, how our subconscious fears control our emotions and how we can break free, and how remaining hopeful can be the most rebellious act of them all. Please join us. KEY TAKEAWAYS Build habits until it becomes second nature. Be present enough to really listen to someone else’s story. Go deeper than the surface level and watch how the person you’re listening to responds – find the place that they are trying to hide from themselves and from you. There is something about supporting people in their inner work process that has changed in the past generation; it can be a benefit to employers because you can show them improved productivity if their employees’ mental health is taken care of. What are some of your core needs that weren’t met in childhood that you could look at and be mindful of to give yourself freedom? BEST MOMENTS “If people are not in connection with themselves, if they can’t feel themselves, if there is no self-compassion, then there cannot be any compassion with another human being, not really. People who are so disconnected from themselves and others are capable of the most atrocious things. What people have done to each other over the course of history is just mindboggling. The only way to prevent that from happening is to make people more conscious, to help people feel.” “Part of human evolution means we keep on telling the same stories.” “Ultimately I don’t think humans are as complicated as we think we are…. your brain gets so fast at picking up the right pieces of information that it then boils down to you feeling that it’s an immediate reaction I had to it.” “I’m delighted to see that there is a generational jump in consciousness that I can very clearly see. Connection to self, the rejection of the patterns and demands of patriarchy, the rejection of all definitions of success, that ‘rejection of more is always better.’” ABOUT THE GUEST Nadjeschda Taranczewski (Nadja) has a master’s in psychology and is a master certified Coach with a 20-year track record as a coach, author, and keynote speaker. She is the author of the book “Conscious You: Become the Hero of Your Own Story” and is currently working on her second, “The Conscious Tribe Playbook”. Ep 278E278: “What if There’s Nothing Wrong?” Speaking with Dr. Alison J Kay
Alison is a fascinating person to spend an hour with. She has spent a lot of her life abroad, studying different religions and along the way learning yoga and meditation. She has been an energy healer with a specific understanding about how chakras play a role in our physical, emotional, and spiritual health. We chat about her travels, how to live a life of authentic adventure, and how to be the most potent and fierce version of ourselves. Please join us. KEY TAKEAWAYS- we must be careful of the messages we tell ourselves because so much of what we do embeds itself in our subconscious, which then directs our decisions. Sometimes, in life, people won’t be ready for you, and that’s okay. As human beings the world wants us to know who we are, to be fully realized versions of ourselves, and to succeed. The best healing can happen in silence. BEST MOMENTS “It is our consciousness that’s going to change everything.”“I like a balance between rationalism and heart and rationalism…I don’t spend a lot of time distinguishing between the spirit, soul, and higher self.” “When we know the answer to something, we get that kudos – so we live in that paradigm; but for ourselves to come out of our habits or our routines that aren’t healthy for us, asking questions, not knowing, and allowing ourselves to be wrong are key tools.”“95% of our daily choices are made from the back-of-the-house consciousness. We don’t say, once we learn how to drive, “put the car into reverse”, we just do it. It gets lodged into the subconscious once we learn. We are making 95% of our choices from this habituated, non-conscious mind place. The more we can clear out that unconscious, locked-down energy that happens from belief…the more mindful we can be about our choices, the more choices we have.” ABOUT THE GUEST Alison J Kay is a pioneer in the field of energy medicine, who has spent most of her life living abroad from the U.S., studying various spiritual traditions. She has been internationally recognized for her work as an energy healer, and for the past 25 years, has been a master mind/body energy medicine practitioner, and a yoga and meditation teacher. She is the creator and founder of the Vibration UPgrade™️ system of spiritual coaching on top of providing one-on-one coaching sessions to clients living all over the world. Beyond that, she has been the host of “Create Your Best Life Ever”, which was ranked in the top-5 of shows on Voice America’s Empowerment channel, as well as the best-selling author of three books – so far. John is also an author and created the G & G Holistic Addiction Treatment in North Miami Beach, Florida. They talk about John’s journey to recovery, when he decided it was his purpose to help others and what his plans are for the future. KEY TAKEAWAYS It was by no accident that John Giordano chose addiction treatment as his life’s work. Growing up the son of a heroin dealer and trying to cope with the trauma of being molested as a young boy, he fell hard into drugs and alcohol. Over thirty-five years ago, at the urging of his family, John entered rehab. He emerged a changed man - committed to helping others afflicted by this hideous disease. There is such a thing as an ‘addiction’ gene. This doesn’t mean that if you have it you will become an addict but it does highly influence the likelihood it will be triggered, especially if you have a difficult life. John started practicing martial arts and it changed his life completely. He left the gang life he had slipped into and put all of his trauma and anger into martial arts. It taught him discipline, focus and how to direct his energy. After having a difficult start to recovery in rehab, John eventually broke down. This is when his road to recovery truly started. He then decided he wanted to become a counselor himself so he went back to high school to get his GED and the rest is history. John truly believes that no matter what has happened to you in life or where you came from you can find happiness and success. You just have to never give up. Listen to yourself and your inner voice. John has done everything he has just to help others. It’s never been about money or notoriety, he just wants to help people live the lives they deserve. He doesn’t take credit when people manage to get clean as he recognises it is them that have done the work to do so, he has just offered guidance. BEST MOMENTS “No matter where you come from, no matter what education, no matter what happened to you in life, what family you had, you can be successful as long as you never give up” “I never chased the money, all I wanted to do was help people and it changed my life, it changed a lot of peoples lives” ABOUT THE GUEST John GiordanoAddiction, Trauma and Recovery Expert - MAC, DHL, CAP, Certified Hypnotherapist, Author, Entrepreneur John Giordano, who himself is in long-term recovery, is an addiction expert whose career spans over thirty-years. John’s passion for helping people shined through early in life as a Karate instructor – and continued later as he helped literally thousands of addicts find their path of recovery at his former treatment center. He is considered by his peers to be a pioneer in holistic addiction treatment. John developed innovative new therapies early in his career that have been proven effective and gone on to become standard care in most modern treatment centers. He continues to play a pivotal role in the ongoing effort to usher evidenced-based and scientifically proven holistic modalities into the mainstream of addiction medicine. Ep 276E276: “Mentorship is Empowerment” – EA Csolkovits Interview
For someone so successful on paper, EA Csolkovits is an incredibly humble human being, who ascribes most of his success to his mentors being generous with their knowledge in the beginning. He is a wonderful storyteller and shares with us how he realised early that he “wanted more from life” and did not know how to get it. Through paying attention to the advice he was given as a teenager, he had made his first million by the time he was 23, and has made giving back – financially, to his community – a key part of his success. He has a unique perspective on what success is and how you can become both spiritually and materially successful. KEY TAKEAWAYS1) Before becoming his advisor, and as a condition of doing so, one of his mentors made him promise that once he was able to, he would begin to give to others. get yourself a mentor. A coach is removed from “the scene” and therefore has a better view of what’s happening and how you can improve. Be responsible about how you react. For example: If you’re in the hospital and you’re given medication and it isn’t working, they say ‘the patient is reacting”. If the medication is working, they’ll say ‘the patient is responsive’. Be responsive to challenges. If people take advantage of you when you’re a giver, *they* are diminished, not you. BEST MOMENTS “You’ll never have a money problem; you’ll have an idea problem.” “(Don’t worry about getting the answers to your life’s biggest questions), focus on asking the right questions, and you’ll get the right answers.” “Don’t say the word failure. Supplant it. Use the (phrase) ‘temporary defeat’. Even the word has an internal ring….When you use the word ‘failure’, you’re throwing yourself out of the game. Stay in the game.” “Teach discernment in relationships. We don’t label people, we label deeds….And that distinction, I’ve seen have a huge impact on people’s lives.” ABOUT THE GUEST E.A. Csolkovits is the son of a milkman. When he was 16, he had a job as a janitor, and ended up working for the first person who would become a mentor to him, a relationship that would shape and guide the rest of his life. He made his first million by the time he was 23. He has spent most of his business career learning from mentors and teaching others what he was taught. He also founded Givers University. Ep 275E275: “Capable, Powerful, Possible” -Jaclyn Gallo Interview
This is an incredible conversation with someone who is completely grounded and clear in her passion and her purpose. Jaclyn runs her own coaching business, hosts the Spark Your Light podcast, is a powerful speaker, and is zeroed in on the intersection of spirituality, manifestation, and psychology. Come along with me on this ride of an episode where we get to meet Jaclyn and get inspired by her inimitable perspective on life. KEY TAKEAWAYS- Start where you are: if you want to become a millionaire but you’re $50,000 in debt, Jaclyn might suggest to working with an affirmation where you notice how easily money finds you, and then noting it down on an “evidence list” so that your brain can start noticing and attuning its filters for abundance. - Creators need silence to produce their best ideas. Sometimes the only person who will believe in your idea is you. But if you keep with it, soon that number will increase to two. Create your own story for your life by leaving behind stories that people say is the way it should be or it is supposed to be. BEST MOMENTS “It seems (to me) is that a lot of people become an overnight success after decades of work…. I have this feeling that I’m just going to reach this tipping point where growth is exponential.” “Happiness is an emotion, while positivity is a state of being.” “Please allow yourself to change your mind. Allow yourself to figure out what your true desires are, to figure out what is in alignment for you and go for it and know that you are supposed to go on that path, you’re meant to go on that path…your desires will always evolve as you see more.” “I value the feeling of expansion, more, going against the idea of what people believe the way it has to be.” ABOUT THE GUEST Jaclyn is a modern-day polymath. At the age of 21, she realized she wanted to start her own business. Success didn’t come immediately, but after a few resets and a few pivots, she began to dig more into psychology, manifestation, and understanding that she needed to follow her own heart. Five years later, she has a six-figure coaching business. She’s been a TedX speaker, written two books, has designed courses and conferences around the key aspects of self-empowerment, and has a purpose to help other women realize their own dreams. Although she may be “young” in terms of numbers, she is an old soul. She lives with her husband in Pennsylvania. Ep 274E274: “The Point of Life is Freedom” – Bill Fairman Interview
Join us for today’s guest, Bill Fairman, for a conversation about money, debt, and how you can make those things work for you instead of you working for it. Bill has had a long career in finance, having worked in the mortgage industry for over 30 years. His experiences being mostly self-employed for most of his adult life, and living through the 2008 crash and recession, has sharpened his focus and passion about helping people become financially independent. KEY TAKEAWAYS (When talking about Mastermind, a peer support group for marketing professionals) 1. Don’t go to (any networking event) where you’re the smartest person in the room, because you’re not getting any benefit from it. The point of networking is to give knowledge, and then to receive it as well. No matter how low things get, if you keep your head up, and keep working, things will get better. The tortoise always wins the race, because it is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Make sure your business does more than one thing, so that if something goes sideways, you can diversify and pivot appropriately. BEST MOMENTS “One of the things we do with our business is that we are regional, so we understand our market, where we are – we’re not trying to be a national company. …We understand our footprint, and when things change, we adjust. That’s the great thing about being small-ish, we’re not like the big cruise ship that takes a couple days to turn around. We can be very nimble and take care of market situations as they come up.” “At the point you retire, you’re hoping you die before you run out of money. It should never be that way.” “This is why I’m so passionate about turning active income into passive income, because once you have that passive income, based on solid assets, there’s no-one or no market condition that is going to take that away from you. You are truly independent and free.” “There’s nothing wrong with debt as long as the debt is on an investment, because then the debt becomes an asset.” ABOUT THE GUEST Bill is the owner and founder of Carolina Capital Management, LLC. His company helps to finance real estate investors who are buying property at a discount, then add value to them by constructing updates, and reselling them or holding onto them for future rental properties. In layperson’s terms, he founded a bank, but without the same regulations, and occupies a private money sector space. Prior to that, he was in the mortgage business for 30+ years. Ep 273E273: “Find Your Blooper Reel” – Mo Barrett Interview
Mo was a riot to connect with. She is a public speaker and author of book “Pardon My Quirk”, and a TEDx speaker. She shares a bit of her journey with me, from being a queer woman joining the Air Force as a pilot, to finding her true purpose coaching others to find happiness in the everyday moments of life. Her motto in life is “laugh, learn, think”, which we do throughout this episode. I can’t wait to share it with you. KEY TAKEAWAYS Have confidence in your weaknesses (that’s what differentiates you and knowing truly who you are makes you stronger) Magic doesn’t take place in big, cinematic moments. It can be the smallest gesture, like someone wanting to hold your hand. Laughter can help move you forward into a place of action. Be weird – let people know your weirdness and you’ll be surprised the connections you can make. BEST MOMENTS “When I’m down in the dumps…if I watch this blooper reel, it makes me laugh, and once I’m laughing, then I can start…getting away from that moment where I think the world is ending.” “If you’re having this experience that I was the catalyst for, and I don’t know about it, share it with me…. It’s powerful.” “I don’t think my stories are extraordinary…they’re about…finding the magic in the mundane.” “A lot of times we overthink things and as we overthink things, we lose the opportunity to act.” ABOUT THE GUEST Mo Barrett was a career Air Force pilot, and since her “retirement” has reinvented herself as a public speaker and mentor, and an author. Her work has taken her to the TEDx stage, and all over the world to work with people and show them that magic is in the smallest moment. Mo was born and raised in Virginia, and she is currently back in her home state. She is married to the love of her life and is raising four “fur babies”. Ep 272E272: “You Help Me Be the Best Me I Can Be” – Tara Wyatt-Treslove Interview
This conversation with Tara Wyatt-Treslove is tender, emotional, and vulnerable in all the best ways. Tara shares with us how she had a self-defining moment in a swimming pool changeroom when she was a child, and how that moment set her on the path to being the body freedom advocate she is today. After years in the teaching field and then obtaining her personal training certification, she has put it all on the line to start her own personal training business. Through online workouts and a supportive online community, individualized courses, and other offerings that are taking shape every day, Tara wants to reach all women who might be struggling with their body issues and give them the keys to their own sense of freedom. KEY TAKEAWAYS Discover the joy and freedom in movement that feels good to you. The size of your body should be the least interesting thing about you. Everyone’s voice is valuable and yours is needed in the world. We can do more in community than by ourselves. There is support and love and feedback in community. Everything that you need, that you are looking for, is already inside of you. BEST MOMENTS “I thought if I could be fit, then I would be happy. If I could be fit, I could be the mom that my kids deserved, the wife that my husband deserved, the person that the world deserved.” “I feel like we need more of a sense of freedom than anything else. All the time and money and energy we spend on this container and trying to change it could be so much better used elsewhere. I still have good body days and bad body days, but I no longer let them consume me.” “I think that my journey with body freedom and my body image issues are very common, and I think that ultimately, we all have a feeling of lack, a feeling of not-enough-ness, and that is where our connection piece is, in terms of that emotion.” ABOUT THE GUEST Tara is an advocate for other people who struggle with body image issues and want to be set free. That was the impetus for her beginning her personal training journey, and what led to her create her strength workshops and “Transform with Tara”. Beyond that, she is a schoolteacher, a mother, and a wife. She makes her home in Calgary Alberta. Ep 271E271: “The Depth of Surrender” – Christian de la Huerta Interview
Christian has been on a full-time spiritual path for at least the past 30 years. He has a gentle, but incredibly focused energy about him – he knows that his mission is to reach people and help them along their own paths of transformation. He shares his story of coming into his own as a gay Cuban immigrant to the U.S., his unshakeable faith in an all-knowing and all-loving creator, and what he thinks is the destiny of every human on earth. KEY TAKEAWAYS - If you are constantly running away from the things about yourself or your life that scare you, you can never be free. - Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the stuck door. - Trust the people in your life who can cut through the noise for you. - You can dream big dreams. Once you have the big dreams, divide them into smaller and smaller parts until you have a size that you can act on. Achieve the small goals, and watch them add up to the dream you never thought you could have. BEST MOMENTS “I wouldn’t undo any of it. The pain and the alienation that I went through…is being used for good. (That) allowed me to understand and empathize with somebody else’s pain. The details may be different, but I *get* existential pain. I know how to get out of self-hatred and self-doubt, and morph that into self-confidence and self-acceptance and self-love. Because I went through it.” “The single most important thing that needs to happen in the world is the empowerment of women. …When women are in 50% of power in the world, we’re going to have a very different relationship to war and poverty and hunger and social justice and how we treat the environment to all of it.” “I see the book as a means to an end. I don’t think the book supported me in my own process of transformation, I think it was just a way of getting out there what I’ve been living and what’s been living inside of my head and inside of my soul. Writing for me…is more work. I resist writing. And yet for me, it was part of my sense of mission. For me, writing the book was a way of reaching more people so I could support them in their process of transformation and empowerment.” “You cannot ‘namaste’ your shadow away.” ABOUT THE GUEST Christian was born and raised in a large, close-knit family in Havana Cuba, and when he was still a young boy, his parents left Cuba and immigrated to Milledgeville Georgia, a few years later relocating to Miami Florida. He was always a student of both spirituality and humanity. He achieved his degree in psychology and one of his first dreams was wanting to join the Catholic priesthood. He has felt the sharp loneliness of being “other”: when he moved to the United States and didn’t speak English; when he began to realize he was gay and struggled to reconcile that with his faith. He had his first experience with breathwork in his 20s and that precipitated a spiritual journey, and gradually he began to share his experiences with others through speeches and coursework. Christian has given TedX talks, created group and individual coaching sessions, and written two best-selling books that aim to help people create their own paths of devastating, healing transformation. Ep 270E270: “Throw Petals Downhill” – Amanda Barrientez Interview
Amanda Barrientez was studying for a Ph.D. in Sociology when she listened to the little voice inside herself that told her she wasn’t living in full alignment with her goals. Her marriage had broken up, the next relationship she was in had also failed, and she was a parent who could barely afford rent. The study of sociology makes her highly attuned to how humans behaved, and that period of personal upheaval made her realize that she had several limiting beliefs about her worth, which then affected what she thought she should earn. She began to take certification towards being a financial and lifecoach, and now works with other entrepreneurs to help them work through the obstacles that are in the way between them and their best lives. “Throwing Petals Downhill” is a philosophy about work that she developed. Running a business and becoming your best self is work, but it should feel like throwing petals down a hill, rather than pushing a boulder up. KEY TAKEAWAYS Getting unstuck around your limiting beliefs about money is a question of working on self-esteem issues. It’s a spiritual journey. There is no such thing as “bad” or “good”. If you can see situations as opportunities to grow and learn, to try and separate from that binary thinking, you start to live more in the present moment, which helps you live in gratitude and can rewire your thinking. She wants to help people learn how to transform themselves into the best version of themselves. The money will follow. Think of the word “healing”. It evokes nurturing, rest, space, care. Amanda has been called “The Money Healer” and she truly embodies this approach to her business and how she helps her clients. BEST MOMENTS - “My mantra for 2021 was ‘work less, make more, have fun.’” “Fear and shame are really low energies, and most people feel a lot of that about money. I’ve worked with people of all different incomes and class levels, and I can’t think of a person I’ve met yet who feels 100% good about money. … How can you get into alignment in your soul to feel good in this body in this life?” “I’m curious about the human puzzle and for the reason of conscious evolution – consciousness evolution.” “You are whole as you are.” ABOUT THE GUEST Amanda is passionate about helping other entrepreneurs heal their relationships with money so they can achieve their professional goals. She is grounded in the certainty that your questions about financial worth have spiritual answers. Her approach to working with clients is a combination of mindfulness techniques, goal setting, and helping them dream their big dreams – and her formula is so successful in a few short years she has grown NFA into a six-figure consulting business. She is Colorado born and raised, a mother to three children, and a lifelong student of human nature. Ep 269E269: “We Meet Ourselves by Becoming Vulnerable” – Nikki Wetherell Interview
Nikki Wetherell found her way to becoming a somatic sex and life coach after a life-defining moment in 2010. She was a young mother and wife, dealing with the effects of a repressed sexual trauma, which landed her in a hospital after admitting to suicidal tendencies. It was her fierce commitment to her own healing, as well as the healing of her family, that inspired her to want to share those lessons with the world to help others heal and move past their own trauma. Nikki is someone whose commitment to honesty and vulnerability about her own life is hugely inspirational. She uses this inspiration to galvanize others to begin their own healing journeys, which she wants to support in whichever ways she can. KEY TAKEAWAYS Letting go is a huge key to (her) freedom. Getting to a place where she was able to acknowledge that she needed to heal, then allowing herself to process her trauma, and then setting down her past — has released her from a cycle of pain. Vulnerability is terrifying because it involves both trust and rigorous honesty, but it can help you achieve your highest potential. Your pleasure is your own responsibility. Forgiveness is not an essential part of moving forward. BEST MOMENTS “The amount of baggage people are capable of carrying is quite astounding. And then the energy it takes to carry that baggage and what we all do to cover it up is something else.” “To do all that evolution (towards becoming a somatic coach), there’s been this thread of me trying to understand why my body functioned in a certain way, why did I need certain things, why did I struggle with certain aspects of sex and pleasure…as I really healed myself, I would get these stories (from) people.” “It doesn’t matter how many walls I put up, I’m actually deeply vulnerable.” “I had to get to a certain point in my healing and then move away from the place where I’d done that….and then I realized, ‘shit, I’m not even straight.’…If I hadn’t moved, if I hadn’t let go, I wouldn’t have realized it.” ABOUT THE GUEST Nikki is a somatic sex coach — someone who works with the trauma that people can hold in their bodies that may be holding them back from experiencing life to the fullest. Early in life she experienced a trauma that was the catalyst for setting her on the path she is on today. Now she combines the training she received as a personal trainer, with holistic spiritual practices to help other women heal from their own hurts. Ep 268E268: “We Are the Way the Universe Appreciates Itself” - John Lefebvre Interview
John Lefebvre has got boundless energy and freedom for changing the world. Two of his most defining moments came after he was arrested: the first time, he was 17 and sold some LSD to a couple of undercover police officers who looked like hippies. The second was when he was arrested in his mid-50s for conspiring to transfer funds with the intent to promote illegal gambling through a money transfer company he co-founded.Throughout his life, he has experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, and as both a lifelong environmentalist and someone who’s experienced wealth like few others, he has a singular perspective on wealth redistribution, taking care of the earth we all live on, and how to leave a legacy for future generations. This is the conversation of a lifetime. KEY TAKEAWAYS Generosity pays dividends, but you can’t be attached to the outcome of what happens with that money. If you are born into privilege, you didn’t do anything to “earn it” and you have a responsibility to pay it forward, and to share so that others can actualize their full potential. Kindness is priceless. If you start each day with a “beginner’s mindset” you are constantly surprised by what can happen in every day. BEST MOMENTS “We distinguish ourselves by the illusion that we’re special. We become at fault when we forget that luck comes with a cost.” “That part of us that dreams at night doesn’t go to sleep when we wake up.” “We actually get more productive when our human resources are developed.” “My responsibility was to learn how to be wealthy responsibly, and then teach others how to adopt that view.” ABOUT THE GUEST Raised as a (Catholic) altar boy in Calgary Alberta, by a single mom after his dad died when he was three, John has had a fascinating life. He’s been a lawyer, a “recidivist husband”, a single father, a musician, an author, a multi-millionaire, a climate change activist, and a philanthropist. A little bit hippie, a lot salt-of-the-earth, John has a deeply philosophical, whimsical take on the world and humanity’s purpose in it. His entire life has been shaped by the idea that simply by being born in Canada, he’s had immense privilege. He believes he has a sense of responsibility to share his advantages and wealth with others to make the world a better place. Ep 267E267: "It’s Not Failure Unless You Stop” – Annette Houston Interview
This was an incredibly moving and real conversation to have. Annette has survived some rocky moments in her life, and she shares how, when she was a child, her father’s sudden illness almost caused the family to lose their business and did cause them to lose their home. This potentially traumatic moment turned into one of Annette’s driving forces: she began to help around the business and noticed that her actions were making a difference. She knew from an early age that being someone else’s employee wasn’t for her – she liked being her own boss. Family, hard work, and nostalgia (she loves all things Disney World – yes, it must be Florida) are still driving forces in her life. Settle in for a conversation with a person who knows the value of hard work and entrepreneurship, how to rest, and what giving back to one’s community truly means. KEY TAKEAWAYS The next time you start to feel upset about a particular obstacle, try looking at it as an opportunity instead. Literally say that to yourself. Reframing things in a positive sense helps you to find solutions you might not otherwise. Sometimes the only thing you can do to move your goals forward is to hang on to start another day. Learn to look at the bigger picture if your “failures” are starting to get you down. There is no such thing as a mistake. Have a life outside of your business, even if your business combines both your income and your passion. It is important to know how to rest and be involved with other things. BEST MOMENTS “I caused myself (lost, in our business) and me -- so much trouble by not understanding that I didn’t know it all and not understanding that there were other people who were able to do things more efficiently…whatever role that it was, it wasn’t my strength.” (On being the owner of a business) “What job doesn’t have its challenges? Look at the opportunity you have in front of you to have a positive impact on people, whether its on your clients, your staff, or your own family? There’s opportunities in front of us every day if we choose to look at it that way.” “For anyone who likes to go, there’s a place on the way in to the Magic Kingdom where you come under the arch, go round and you can see the castle…there’s this feeling, you come in, and the sun’s beaming down and you start to smell all the smells: the popcorn and the bakery and the hotdogs…there’s a lot of people who get emotional. You only get that feeling when you leave and when you come back. This is what I work for.” “I love learning. If I’m not doing four courses, I’m not well. I always have something on the go that I’m trying to get my head around.” ABOUT THE GUEST Annette Houston was born and raised in Donegal. She is a wife, a mother, and a huge Disney fan. She is also a business owner -- currently she owns several cleaning companies. She’s gotten a master’s degree in Innovation and Leadership from the Letterkenny Institute of Technology, and prides herself on her curiosity which keeps her learning. Ep 266E266: “Finding that Gift That is in You and Being It” – Jill Thiry Interview
In this episode, Jill Thiry explains to Mighty Pete about her eight steps to realizing her goals, and the process she uses with her coaching clients to get them to realize theirs. Considering Thiry’s passion for her work, you may think her methods would be strict, but one of the cornerstones of her philosophy is kindness and love, with the reasoning that more will grow out of a sense of nourishment. In her coaching practice she uses a combination of visualization, mantra, intention setting and a scientific methodology to ignite a gradual, transformative change in people’s lives. KEY TAKEAWAYS Start big and then narrow down. Have a brainstorming session with yourself and uncover some of your big dreams, then slowly pick out a sentence or a word that pertains to that goal. Then decide on a step you can take to move towards that goal. If things stop being fun, stop doing them. Let your curiosity guide your growth. The more you experiment with goal setting, the louder your ‘heart voice’ will become, and the easier it will become the person you’re spiritually supposed to be. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and show vulnerability. Being vulnerable is a big part of the journey. BEST MOMENTS “If I promise to myself and to you, that I’m going to commit to doing this one thing for the next week or the next month or the next year…but if I speak it, it kind of works to get it out of the spin.” “I’m going to say that there is nothing more (important) than your own health and wellness, because it shows love for yourself. I do believe that it is difficult for you to love other things and other people, and be a great mentor and example, if you don’t love yourself. … Your health and wellness, which for me is wholeness…you do share that love with others.” (Allowing herself to follow her ‘yeses’) “Why am I doing this? What do I get out of it? What do I enjoy out of it, what do I not enjoy?” “One of my gifts I think is making it simple and easy enough that people can practice it without judging themselves, without getting an ego.” ABOUT THE GUEST Jill Thiry is a nomad, both in terms of her career and in her life. After getting her BA at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she followed her passion for teaching and fitness to the local YWCA, where she became the fitness director. After that, she moved to Europe and spent two years teaching skiing and kayaking, and then backpacked through Southeast Asia before heading back to the United States. She got an MBA from the University of San Francisco, and worked in the publicity industry until 2001, when 9/11 was the catalyzing force behind a divorce and a career change. She began to split her time between Mexico and Southern California, working at a spa called Rancho de la Puerta in one and running a coaching business in the other. She has developed a mentoring process which she employs with her clients to this day. She still splits her time between Mexico and San Diego. Ep 265E265: “Once You Start the Fear Falls Away” – Elizabeth Batalla Interview
Elizabeth Batalla has a thoughtful approach to life which shapes and guides who she is today, and how she acts in the world. As a successful corporate star, she learned the tips of what makes people successful, and when she was ready, she made the transition to become a full-time mentor to other women through her own company. In her conversation with Mighty Pete, she shares with him and the audience the small and crucial interactions that changed her life and started her on this new path, her experience in the business world, how she developed her holistic approach to wellness, and how her vision encompasses both the Japanese concept of ikigai as well as common-sense, Western approaches to organization and goal setting. KEY TAKEAWAYS Each person in the world has dreams that are unique to them, and you shouldn’t let anyone talk you out of achieving what you want in life. Small steps forward, being organized about what you want, and working with and not against yourself can get you farther than you realize. Health and success should be measured holistically, but we do not have to hustle to accomplish everything every day. Aim to check in with yourself about your goals a few times a week and you should have both the space and the structure to make real gains. Trust the feedback that people give you when they have nothing to gain from the interaction. Look for those moments in your career and your personal relationships, they don’t have to be momentous. Similarly, you won’t one day just wake up and live the life of your dreams. You can add one new habit to your daily routine and slowly transform yourself over time. BEST MOMENTS “For a truly happy life I do believe in a holistic approach, but I don’t want people to feel ‘oh my goodness, this is so much. How do I get all these areas to line up?’ and what I would say about that is, it’s not that you are doing these things every day…if you have that touch point along all those nine areas for, say, a week, you’ll be okay.” “The inspiration is being able to make a real, real difference in people’s lives. Through the programs that I offer, through interacting with me, just being able to make that difference in someone’s life…I genuinely don’t like to see people in discomfort. … The fuel for me is to help people switch on that ‘a-ha’ moment.” “I had enough savings where I could step away from my corporate world without damaging my standard of living – of course I had to cut back on certain things, because I used the money in my savings to invest in the business and get things started and to give me traction to be able to work full-time on it, but I didn’t just walk away with no plan. I didn’t want to build my business from a place of desperation.” “Just start. I say that because there’s so much out there, there are so many people with amazing talent, and they are either scared to start, or there is always something that prevents them from starting. Small, consistent steps can make a great change in someone’s life. Start where you are, use what you have, and do the best you can, but just start.” ABOUT THE GUEST Elizabeth Batalla worked in the corporate sector for over 30 years, cultivating her niche in consulting until March 2020, when she realized that she was ready to start her own business, helping others to achieve their professional and personal goals. The Institute for Achievement and Excellence was born. Through the Institute, Elizabeth offers one-on-one mentorship and curated courses to help specifically women to identify their goals and create detailed plans to actualize them. Through her experience, she developed a nine-point system of checking in with oneself, in areas such as physical health, career, relationships, and spirituality, with the reason that one is only truly healthy when one is living a balanced, holistic life. Ep 264E264: “Dream Big and Don’t Fear Anything” – Alex Oliveira Interview
Sit down and buckle in and get ready for an inspiring and energizing conversation between Mighty Pete and Alex Oliveira, business mentor, entrepreneur, father, husband, and jack of all trades. Alex has lived and experienced his share of tragedy. He’s seen some of his business ventures fail and has reinvented his path repeatedly. A lifelong learner and student of humanity, these days Alex consults and works with other businesses to help them grow through a process called “lead generation”. In this fascinating discussion, Alex shares his philosophy on life and work, what his true priorities are, and how he can be so successful while doing it all. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you truly enjoy what you’re doing, it never feels like work. It’s not just about work. Fill your life with passion and fun – whatever that means for you – and you will be a well of endless energy. If you find ways to give back in life, it will find a way to come back to you. If you do what you are meant to do, you will make an indelible mark on this world. BEST MOMENTS (If he was stranded on a desert island) “I’d still be sketching workflows…because it excites me, and I’d think about the sales and the commerce and (it makes me) think back to when I was a kid, working at the flea markets with my parents.” “We’re not going to be here forever, so how are you going to run your life? Are you going to let someone else run it for you?” “Teach your workforce to tell their good stories about their life.” “I want to learn more because it gives me joy to open my mind to things that I never thought were possible.” ABOUT THE GUEST Alex redefines the word “passion”. Originally from Brazil, he immigrated to Florida in the U.S. when he was young, and he still lives about an hour outside of Orlando. He is an entrepreneur who specializes in lead generation and trains other business owners to maximize their own profits. Nothing slows him down – besides maintaining several businesses, speaking at conferences, and his consulting work, he hosts his own podcast, Dadpreneur, and is on the board of the YMCA. On the more personal side, Alex is a husband to his college sweetheart, and a father of four. He and his wife homeschool their kids. Ep 263E263: “Measure the Right Things in the Right Way” – Jeff Smith Interview
Settle in for a fascinating conversation with Jeff Smith, a person who seems to have done it all: he’s been a professional musician, a pilot, an author, an entrepreneur, a bestselling author. After being in the corporate world for several years, Jeff wanted to help other people with what he’d learned during his career: how setting clear, detailed goals can help others achieve the successes that had previously been outside of their reach. With focus and indefatigable energy, Jeff shares with Mighty Pete his personal definitions of success (which includes rest), and how his journey has landed him in the most interesting, creative places. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you follow your heart in your chosen career, your passion will ignite word-of-mouth, and loyal clientele will find you. KPIs help you redefine your personal or professional goals by showing you how to improve on or refine what you did in the past. “Success is about having something that you want to achieve and being on the journey and moving towards that. … Success is more about striving towards (something) rather than having done it.” Think about all the fears you have in your life. Most of them are not based in fact – they are based in conditioning. If you are dealing with obstacles in your life, work on what your conditioned beliefs are. BEST MOMENTS “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’re like a ship without a rudder.” “I began with the advertisements for my book. Because I decided I wanted to know what people would want – I spent three months defining my goal before I’d even written a word.” (Talking about a Tom Jones interview he listened to that changed his life) “Not having money changes people. When people have money, they become the person who they really are.” “We are born with only two fears: one is loud noises; the other is the fear of falling. Everything else is conditioning.” ABOUT THE GUEST Jeff is from England and is affectionately known as the “KPI Guy”. (Key performance indicators are of course, the quantifiable measure of progress towards an intended goal). Jeff has been a business trainer and coach for over 35 years, and a motivational speaker for over 20. In this capacity, he has travelled the world being the keynote speaker at different conferences. Jeff has written seven best-selling books about KPI and provided expert financial consulting to hundreds of corporate and individual clients. Jeff also has a valid pilot’s license and donates his time and his aeroplane to Civil Air Patrol. He also finds the time to be an Ambassador to the United Nations, registered in both Geneva and New York. Ep 262E262: “Follow the Breadcrumbs Through Life” – Liz Rutledge Interview
Join Mighty Pete for this vulnerable and honest discussion with the Liz Rutledge about mindfulness, success, and achieving one’s dreams. Liz is open about how she’s spent her entire life “following breadcrumbs” from one interest to another (for instance, when she was younger, she didn’t think she would have children, now she has three) but has built a purposeful life just the same. Having just turned 50, she thinks it’s been her best year yet in terms of self-knowledge and understanding. One of Liz’s passions in life is mentoring school-aged children as a mindfulness teacher, and she also is a proponent of living as lightly on the earth as possible to make the biggest impact on climate change. She lives her life by example, filling it with love, presence, and service. KEY TAKEAWAYS Just because you’re on the right path, or doing what you’ve already dreamed of, doesn’t mean you won’t have moments of self-doubt. A lot of the public dialogue around any issue seems quite black and white, because polarization drives profits. If we try to see all sides of an issue it can strengthen our sense of compassion. A benefit of getting older is an understanding of what our true core values are, letting go of any self-consciousness about how we present in the world, and streamline our lives so we can live as aligned to our values as possible. Writing down our goals helps to manifest them. Part of Liz’s daily practice is to write her 17 goals and dreams down every morning, and then letting go of the process. The writing down helps to keep her spiritual energy focused. BEST MOMENTS “When we’re kind to others we get a little kickback of that kindness, because it feels good to do good.” “Every day I choose to be a wife and a mom. Every day I choose to continue to encourage people to be more caring about themselves and the planet. And there’s power in that – recognizing the power of choice. It isn’t always easy, but whether we’re fated or not, I think we do have some control over our path.” “Getting out of our comfort zone, getting out of our home country, helps us understand others better.” “It’s not necessarily about how you make your dream come true, if you still make your dream come true, it still happened.” ABOUT THE GUEST Liz Rutledge is first and foremost a mom, a sister, a wife, and a friend. Beyond raising her three children, she stays very connected with her community: volunteering, and teaching mindfulness programs to middle schoolers. Liz is a graduate of the Harvard Extension School, a writer (of novels, essays, and more) and the founder of SustainableThree.com (a website which teaches its visitors to be mindful of themselves, the planet, and each other). Ep 261E261: “Being Thrown into the Cold Water and Learning to Swim” – Regina Huber Interview
You will want to hear this conversation between Mighty Pete and the one and only Regina Huber: a woman who spent much of her professional life in corporate management, and who has transitioned into being a career coach for women who want to make bigger gains in their own professions. Regina is certified in various training methods, has created, and founded her own training courses, published a best-selling book, and has been the featured speaker at several conferences. Beyond achieving irrefutable career success, she has forged her own path, and understands how important it is for each of us to live the lives that we were destined for. She shares with Mighty Pete how she figured out what life she was supposed to live, how to turn challenges into advantages, and how to fill your life with the passion that will drive you. KEY TAKEAWAYS When she was starting out, Regina did not really have a role model for who she wanted to be, so she found one: herself. She understands that everyone’s goals are different and connects with each of her clients on their level, to adapt her teaching skills to their unique vision. Her business model and public speaking are both very connected to heart. That is the path towards success and a more spiritual fulfillment. Always be learning and have a “beginner’s mindset”. This can be applied to both Huber’s business and personal life (she finds great satisfaction in speaking to in-person audiences, but has had to adapt since Covid; also, she does not consider herself a great dancer but tries to dance four times a week). Being flexible and open-minded attracts joy into your life. She has had a unique and interesting life, led without much of a template – but she wants to change that and provide a formula for those people who may want to live a peripatetic life like hers. Giving back to the community is a big part of personal integrity. BEST MOMENTS “I always tell my coaching clients that…we will be working on situations, specific situations, so in this sense the coaching is situational – but whatever you learn through those situations, as we go through them, that will help you transform, so then you take it with you for the rest of your life.” “I believe when I (lived) my most painful experience, I did not follow my intuition, I did not really listen to my heart. I wanted to do this – the collaboration with that person was probably the easy way out to not doing it on my own.” “The biggest part of leadership is trust-building. We have to be able to build trust in all directions. … (Leaders) need to be transparent, they have to have integrity, they have to be courageous…. They want to lead by example, not by words.” “I think most of us want to make an impact in our own ways. There are so many ways to make an impact, we don’t have to have the spotlight.” ABOUT THE GUEST Regina Huber was born in a small farming town in Germany, but her adventuring spirit has taken her to five different continents through her work in the corporate world. She has lived and worked in the U.S., Spain, Argentina, and Brazil, as well as stints back in Germany. Her transition to becoming a professional career coach was gradual and natural. With a natural flair for public speaking and direct connection with her audience, Regina specializes in helping women in mid-level positions in their own careers achieve their next level of success. Beyond being a career coach, Regina is a best-selling author, nomad, and founder of her own teaching practicum: Transform Your Performance. Although she is back on the road again for now, she and her business are currently based in New York. Ep 260E260: "Live a Life of Design, Not of Default" – Cyrina Bullard Interview
Cyrina Bullard breaks all the rules and stereotypes. As a second-generation certified pharmacist, she has long been interested in helping other people manage their pain and live healthier lives. After two traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), she had to teach herself how to walk, talk, and function again. Then, post-initial recovery, she dealt with daily headaches and had to retire from practicing pharmacy. She describes her second career as a spiritual calling. One night, something compelled her to look up the domain name, “Catching Happiness dot com”. It, for some reason, was free, so she immediately paid the $38 required to register it, and over time realised that she wanted to continue helping people, this time by training them to live more courageously, more mindfully, and more empathetically. Join Mighty Pete and Cyrina for an inspiring conversation about hope, perseverance, and the true definition of success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Resilience skills can be developed over time and through practice. “Whole grain health practices” such as sleep, eating healthy, and meditation can have measurable effects on our bodies. Our communities can be a real resource, as well – ask around what works for others. By sharing information, we become stronger and build connection. We only live one life, so we might as well make it a great one. What are your passions? What lights you on fire? What is holding you back from living the life of your dreams? Believing in science and fact-based knowledge does not preclude believing in miracles and serendipity. We are human beings, meant to experience the world and all it has to offer, but we are also here to be of service to others and be a contributing member of the human community. BEST MOMENTS “How can we empower each other to live our best lives, because we don’t know what tomorrow holds? I (want to) help people be conscious about what activities they introduce to their days, because you can’t control what happens in your life, but you can control how you react to, or respond to what’s happening in your life. We need to be able to adapt to situations and rise.” “I think we learn and grow as we go, but it’s a process, becoming our best.” “I’ve studied a lot about the brain, since I’ve had these two brain injuries: how I can optimize my brain health, and none of it has to do with drugs. A lot has to do with meditation, exercise, the way you eat, do you sleep? … There are so many things we can do naturally to help with our physiology, because our bodies are so intelligent.” “I’m a very resilient person, so I’m capable of allowing myself to move through challenges…I feel like I’m on this path and I’m capable of feeling guided and listening to that inner voice.” ABOUT THE GUEST Cyrina Bullard is a certified HeartMath trainer and a Life Mastery consultant, helping people discover their true vision for their lives and cultivate the courage to pursue it. She is a member of the Continuing Education committee at the College of Pharmacy and at a consumer advisory board at Craig Hospital. She practiced as a pharmacist for many years, until a series of traumatic brain injuries forced her into early retirement; but from that serious setback she realised that she could still help people by sharing her story, and the health and resilience skills she learned along her way back to life. Cyrina loves to travel, have a glass of red wine or some dark chocolate, and tries to live in the present moment as much as possible. Ep 259E259: “Nobody Takes Our Power, We Give It Away” – Gail Rudolph Interview
Gail Rudolph has a unique, holistic view of personal power and how it changes the world. She tells Mighty Pete how little tricks of body language and understanding how to stay grounded during any situation can directly affect the outcome. KEY TAKEAWAYS Understanding how ‘power dynamics’ are a give-or-take scenario most of the time, and how you can achieve the outcome you want out of most situations by understanding when to exhibit your ‘active’ versus your ‘passive’ power. The “Scarcity Principle” can increase your ‘value’ and make people more inclined to listen to you, or value what you have to say. The obstacles or challenges you encountered as a child can often lead us to our purpose (for example, how Gail’s position as the youngest child in her family made her want to study how to get people’s voices heard). A negotiation can be curated so that the outcome is beneficial to both people. BEST MOMENTS “Powering up is a choice we make to step into a fuller presence such as making direct eye contact or taking up that space that I talked about. Powering down, on the other hand, is intentionally changing our stance – expressing empathy, or giving others the chance to interrupt you, or using a softer tone of voice. You see, powering down has often been viewed as being very bad, or something we don’t want to do, but I’m here to tell you that powering down can be a very effective tool, as long as we intentionally use it and hold our power to make other people feel at ease.” “The law of power is ‘the only person you have control over is yourself.’ But if you can control your interaction with other people, you can change their experience with you.” “We confuse boundaries with power all the time. … Boundaries are simply the limits that we’ve set around our energy, our money, or our time.” “When we look at life as an opportunity, everything is a learning experience, there’s no failure in life…we have to learn the lessons to get to the next level. We don’t fail.” ABOUT THE GUEST After years in the executive world managing and mediating power dynamics in the office, Gail Rudolph became a Cialdini Method Certified trainer and executive coach who helps businesspeople find their voice and attain a higher level of success. Gail has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a Leadership Certificate from Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a master’s degree in Human Services Administration, and she uses a scientific, results-driven approach to understanding the nuances of communication and human behavior. Ep 258E258: “Plants Don’t Worry if There’s Going to Be Sun Tomorrow.” – Tara Chatzakis Interview
Tara Chatzakis has always been a free spirit. Born in Yorkshire, she was married and raising a family in Greece when she had an epiphany: she could leave her dysfunctional marriage if she wanted and create a new life for herself. She relocated herself and her three daughters to the Isle of Wight, and shortly after, realized she wanted to help other women to empower themselves. She began to take accreditation to become a business coach and entrepreneur; due to her love of people and her extroverted nature, she also found a niche in podcasting and motivational speaking. In this episode of the show, she and Mighty Pete discuss what it’s like to wake up one day and decide to take your life in your own hands. How the smallest of decisions can be pivotal, and how courage can be found along the way. KEY TAKEAWAYS We only have one life, so it’s worth it to take chances on big dreams. Tara can help isolate the root causes of her clients’ insecurities and give them an action plan on how to move through them, thus releasing the obstacles holding them back from achieving their highest potential. The first step in achieving professional or personal goals is to be honest with yourself and what truly is motivating you. There is only one of each of us – so one of our life’s missions must be figuring out who that person is and being brave enough to let that person out – and a life coach can help. We all need mentors and will use them at different points in our lives. Training your brain through neuroplastic techniques and affirmations can help us reset the negative soundtracks we may not even be aware that we are playing. BEST MOMENTS “Everyone has so much potential within them to do great things, but you just get used to living every single day like the Groundhog Day movie, every single day is exactly the same (but it doesn’t have to be).” “The more you speak about what you’re doing, the clearer you become on what you’re doing.” “The ego, bless it, is there to protect you, isn’t it? It wants to keep you safe. If it’s unknown, it’s going to question whether you need it, whether you it’s important, whether it’s expensive, whether it’s right for you, and all these things because it doesn’t understand what the outcome is going to be because it’s new and it’s scary. But you must let that go, and trust.” “You could spend your whole day worrying about something, and worrying that you’re not going to be able to do something, and then when you get to that point it’s all well and good anyway, so why did you waste all that time getting anxious about it?” ABOUT THE GUEST Tara is a certified Law of Attraction practitioner and Robbins-Madanes coach, who works with women entrepreneurs who want to manifest their careers and lives into the next level. She has been working in this field for over a decade, and recently has also started her own podcast, (Happy, Inspired, Motivated) which is in the top 5% of motivational podcasts globally. Ep 257E257: “How Do I Want to Show Up?” – Jeffrey Scott Miller Interview
Scott Jeffrey Miller is a whirlwind: a whirlwind of energy, of focus and motivation, of passion. He sits down with Mighty Pete for an intimate conversation about what makes him tick, how he’s been able to become so successful in his professional career, and the moment in his life where everything changed. From Florida to Utah, from Disney to Franklin Covey, from project manager to author, Miller is the epitome of “if you fall down seven times, get up eight.’ He is not shy about discussing his failures or the many life lessons he’s learned along the way to the top of the game. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being honest about one’s failures takes away the mystique of success: it is a lot of trial and error, a lot of practice, a lot of hard work. A key to career success is organization: making a detailed plan of approach and being disciplined to hit each of the goals on the way. Be ready to pivot. Miller was not a father or husband until his 40s, but then he met his now-wife, fell deeply in love, took a leap and now his family is the most fulfilling part of his life and a large part of his legacy. Sacrifice to have the life that you want. Miller rises at 4 a.m. every morning to do a little work before his family gets up. BEST MOMENTS “I live my life from the lens of, not ‘I have to’, not ‘I ought to’, but ‘I get to.’” “I don’t live my life enslaved by my detractors.” “Successful people are fairly willing to do what unsuccessful people aren’t.” “The more people you know, the more you realize how fragile life is.” ABOUT THE GUEST Scott Jeffrey Miller is the entrepreneur who successful entrepreneurs look up to. He was hired in his mid 20s by the Walt Disney Company and helped design Celebrationn City (Walt Disney’s original version of The Epcot Center). After he left Disney, he was hired by Franklin Covey and rose through the ranks to become first their chief marketing officer, and then the vice president of thought leadership. After a 25-year career, Miller is now (semi) retired and a four-time best selling author, motivational speaker, business coach, husband and father. He lives in Utah with his family. Ep 256E256: “Midlife Wake-Up Call” – Phil Barth Interview
Mighty Pete sits down with motivational speaker and author Phil Barth for a conversation about how, often, humans can fool themselves into believing they are invincible. Before 2015, Phil was a man addicted to stress. He worked 60-hour weeks, drank pots of coffee every day to keep going, and survived on very little sleep. Then he had a heart attack which landed him in the hospital. As part of his recovery, his doctors suggested that he take a week off work every three months. It was during one of those weeks off when he began to write a daily gratitude list, which provided the seed for his second book, Great Things Happen Every Day: Finding Joy with Family, Friends, and Banana Milkshakes. Phil is a deeply spiritual person whose goals post-2015 have become spending more time with his family, being of service in the ways he can, and continuing to cheer for all Cleveland sports teams. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gratitude is a muscle, or a practice that can be grown and strengthened over time. He has trained himself to look for the great things in life. Often, the moments that we appreciate in our lives are small and revolve around the people in our lives – the human connections we have. Barth faced his own mortality more than once, but it was only after he had a health crisis that he nurtured his spirituality and truly questioned the foundations of his life. Just like how our “best moments” can be small, we can reconnect with our loved ones over time, through small and meaningful gestures. BEST MOMENTS “When I started looking for what was positive in my life, when I started looking for what was positive around me – people, places, etc., my stress just lowered because I wasn’t focused on what was going wrong.” “What is important to me (now) is a healthy, happy family…(and) to give back.” “Is this the place I’m supposed to be right now? Is this the thing I’m supposed to be doing? You better believe it.” “I’m so lucky for so many reasons, not the least of which is: I survived.” ABOUT THE GUEST Phil Barth was born and raised in Ohio and attended Bowling Green University, where he graduated with a degree in Computer Science. He has had more than a few brushes with fame: as a contestant on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, he won $32,000 in prizes, and he was also a Top 10 finalist in the Toastmasters’ World Championship in 2011. In 2015 everything changed for him when he landed in the hospital due to a “minor” heart attack (although it did not feel minor), which led him to reassess and redesign his life so that it was more in line with his core beliefs. Thankfully, Phil is still alive and lives with his wife and three sons in Ohio. He maintains a busy public speaking schedule and may be working on his next book. Ep 255E255: “Have A Vision for Your Life” – Joey Drolshagen Interview
With passion and enthusiasm, business coach Joey Drolshagen shares with Mighty Pete how, after a successful 28-year career in the corporate sector, he finally had the courage to step into his dreams of helping others. In a catastrophically short amount of time, both of his parents died, his 19-year marriage ended, he was living apart from his son, and his retirement savings had been gutted due to the divorce. With literally nothing left to lose, Joey, always the entrepreneur, began to coach other professionals on how to take their business to the next level by looking at each of his clients’ mental blocks and showing them step-by-step how to break them down. His success has been astonishing, and he credits this to his bedrock of spirituality, hard work, and being aligned with his true purpose. KEY TAKEAWAYS One of Joey’s missions is to help other people find their life’s purpose quickly, without going through the hardships he did. He points out that adapting to and living with pain is habit forming and means that we often don’t step out into the discomfort of changing our circumstances. His faith and belief in something greater have strengthened his resolve to take risks If you love what you do it will never feel like work. Joey’s approach is to help each client with unique counsel, so that each of his solutions is different. BEST MOMENTS “Where are you exactly right now and where do you want to be?” “Putting effort into what we want to do is actually energizing to us.” “To experience uncommon results, we have to take uncommon action. We’re going against our knowing, we’re even going against our feeling.” “Life happens *for* me and not *to* me. Clarity is power.” ABOUT THE GUEST Joey Drolshagen spent close to 30 years in corporate, cultivating the skills he now uses to coach other professionals to greater heights in their own businesses. It has apparently worked, because in 2021, he was named one of the top 20 business coaches by Disruptor magazine. Joey works intimately with each of his clients to devise a unique action plan based on their needs and provides measurable results within a matter of weeks. Ep 254E254: “Find Your Talent and Practice, Practice, Practice” – Tyler Foley Interview
Mighty Pete and Tyler Foley sit down to talk about talent and how to nurture it. Tyler has a very specific lived experience in that he’s been working as an actor from the age of six – and so has an important perspective on how to grow and improve the skills we have naturally. He humbly shares the setbacks he has gone through on the way to his current success, to show the Fire in the Belly listeners how “failures” are more often disguised gifts. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hone your talents and show up to make your dreams happen, but also leave space for the universe to guide you on a different path. We don’t “possess” any of our talents or material things. The best way to make use of anything is to use it in service to others. Find something that excites you and do it every day. Trust who you are (can you work a 9-5? Are you more an entrepreneur who prefers making their own hours?) and don’t needlessly drain your energy. BEST MOMENTS “Talent is such a weird and finicky thing. I feel that everyone who has a chance to audition (for something) has talent, but your specific talent may not be what you need for that role.” “I am definitely metric-driven, too … I am pleasure-driven (as opposed to pain-driven). If I am not succeeding…currently, I know that I can get there. So, I’m driven for the reward at the end of the tunnel.” “(My setbacks) were necessary because they really focused (my) message. I will give this up, I will give that up – but I’m not giving up on this.” “There is nothing significantly different between a person who feels they are lucky versus a person who feels that they are unlucky, but the people who feel that they are lucky have a wider field of perception…so they are constantly looking for opportunities, (positive biases) over negative biases.” ABOUT THE GUEST Sean Tyler Foley is many things: first and foremost, a father and husband, but also a bestselling author, a public speaker, an outdoor enthusiast, entrepreneur, and a former child actor who “retired” from acting at the age of 25. Ep 253E253: “Wake Up to Who You Are” – Indra Rinzler Interview
In this fascinating deep-dive conversation with one of the Western hemisphere’s leading spiritual teachers, Mighty Pete talks with Indra Rinzler about his extraordinary path to “enlightenment”. Full of laughter and light-heartedness, Rinzler shares how he began to study spirituality in his 20s, finding a particular resonance with Hindu teachings, and how that shaped the rest of his life. He has spent a lot of time in India and has travelled over 56 countries to embrace different cultures and make that a part of his spiritual offering. He is a sought-out Vedic astrologer, public speaker, and intuitive, who has clients all over the world. KEY TAKEAWAYS We can all get to a state of flow, which is being aligned with the universe. It is a state of being, of not asking, but knowing. A lot of getting into flow happens through silence, which Rinzler believes has a higher vibration than words. Once we learn our enneagram, we can observe our behavior and the stories we tell ourselves, so that we can let them go. According to the ancient Hindu Yugas, we are about 120 years into a new cycle of energy, called the “Dwapara Yuga”, (or Energy Age), which will last 2,000 years. If we are only 120 years in, we can ascribe the chaos of the outside world to the “growing pains”, or adolescence of this new era. Finding out about ourselves and the way we function is learning about the universe. We are always connected to the universe, even though we can sometimes feel separated from the flow. BEST MOMENTS “I help people wake up to who they are.” “When the mind, when the ego quiets down then you find more comfort in and relevance for the silence.” “I just rebel against any question. What I’m attracted to is the answers, not the questions. I don’t think we need to know ‘why’. I read in a book recently that ‘you don’t need to know why; you just need to release.’ … So, the process now is releasing.” When I first got into spirituality, I was in my 20s… (I realized) when you can walk into a room and feel the energy that’s more than the physical plane of the room; you walk into a party, or you walk into a place and you can feel energy beyond what you know, it opens up every possibility.” ABOUT THE GUEST Indra Rinzler has been walking his spiritual path for over 50 years. He spent part of his life as a book publisher, specializing in children’s books on nature, and lived for 20 years in an ashram, where he raised his children. Prior to the pandemic, he had spent every winter since 1998 in India. He is a Vedic astrologer who studies the Yugas, an ancient part of Hindu knowledge. He has combined his knowledge of astrology with the Enneagram theory and works with his clients on a deeply intuitive level, providing individual readings to help others achieve spiritual freedom. Indra Rinzler lives with his wife in California, close to the Sierra Nevada mountains. Ep 252E252: "Navigating Your Path with Intention” – Dr. Ian D. Brooks Interview
In this one-on-one with Mighty Pete, Dr. Ian D. Brooks discusses how we can live with intention and purpose, by being our authentic selves one day, and one decision, at a time. Dr. Brooks’ career path, taking him through a Bachelor of Science and two graduate degrees in psychology, imbued him with intense curiosity and interest in how our thinking informs our actions. Over the past 25 years he has gone from being a practicing psychologist to helping leaders who are already successful in their chosen fields to become even better. Tune in to get inspired and transformed. KEY TAKEAWAYS -If you’re not sure of your life’s purpose, there are actual steps you can take to uncover this in yourself. -Start small. Start with the one thing you can do. Keep doing what you can do until more becomes illuminated. -Ask for help when you need it. Mentorship can be key in personal growth. - When you’re uncomfortable is when the most growth happens. BEST MOMENTS “Our characters are who we show up as every day, and our characters show up at different times in our lives.”“My superpower is, specifically, having a voice. A voice of purpose, a voice of change and transformation…to help people down a path to their own transformation.” “I struggle with ‘good’ and ‘bad’ when we are defined by it. We have to use our failures and successes as a reference, not as a place of residence.” “(Living with intention is) I’m moving forward with purpose and with knowledge of myself.” ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Ian D. Brooks has a master’s in Clinical Psychology from Auburn University and a Ph. D in Organizational/Industrial Psychology from Alliant. As a licensed clinician, author, public speaker, and motivational coach, he has helped hundreds of clients overcome their obstacles to success and forge new paths for themselves out of intention and purpose. Ep 251E251: “Stepping into the Fear” – Michelle Donnelly Interview
In this episode, Mighty Pete sits down with Michelle Donnelly, the owner of the bakery Sweet Momma Simon, co-host of the After Hours show on Clubhouse, meditation coach, and professional photographer. They discuss her international move from the U.S. to Ireland 24 years ago, and how she’s built a life and a family there. She shares how she felt lost for many years, and through the process of finding herself, wants to light a fire under other people. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes, even your family won’t be the first people to understand you. You must keep looking until you find the people that truly understand your heart. She would not be where or who she is if she hadn’t taken a huge step into the unknown. That has become a guiding principle in her life. Two words to describe Michelle Donnelly are family (the most important thing to her) and gratitude. Once you truly know and trust yourself, you care a lot less about what people think and you are able to forge the life that you are meant to have. BEST MOMENTS “When you find your purpose, you light up like a big furnace.” “Make your own decisions and believe in yourself. Believe, believe, believe.” “I’m not ahead of myself, I’m not behind myself, I’m just where I’m supposed to be.” “I know that on the other side of the fear of ‘what are other people thinking?’ I look at all the things that I’ve started to do, all of the accomplishments that I’ve been able to do, and all of the amazing things that have come into my life because I got rid of that fear.” ABOUT THE GUEST Michelle Donnelly is a fiercely independent entrepreneur: a trained baker, a photographer, a meditation coach, and a podcast host. Originally from Minnesota, U.S.A, she moved to Northern Ireland 24 years ago to be with her now husband, where she still lives with her family. Ep 250E250: “‘Whole’-istic Wellness” – Liz Rutledge and Cyrina Bullard Interview
This fascinating discussion takes us deep within the territory of mindfulness, trauma, and the slippery science of happiness. Cyrina Bullard and Liz Rutledge have run Sustainable Happiness Together since 2019 but have been friends and collaborators for much longer. Liz has taught mindfulness and meditation courses at the middle and high school levels, and Cyrina has had first-person experience using meditation to re-train her brain after two traumatic brain injuries meant she could not longer work as a pharmacist. Liz supplies the technique and Cyrina supplies the scientific metrics to show that this pursuit of happiness (via improved diet, exercise, connection with other people and with nature) has measurable effects on one’s health. It does not take them long to convince even the heartiest of skeptics, as they prove, time and time again, that in every moment, we have a choice to be present and fully engaged in our surroundings – and that does help our wellbeing, and others around us. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are measurable, scientifically proven gains to be had in our quality of life if we prioritize our own ‘happiness’. Liz’s background is in teaching mindfulness to children – partly because children are eminently more teachable because they have less baggage. While the Winning Wellness packages are designed for everyone who wants to be holistically well, their primary targets are parents for this, “ripple effect” reason. Their unique contribution to the wellness industry lies in the combination of their backgrounds and their complementary offerings: Cyrina as a certified pharmacist, and Liz as a mindfulness educator. Understanding the importance of people and connection on our energy levels; “if people are suffering around us, it affects our wellness’. BEST MOMENTS “I think that we, as humans, have to be intentional about (creating) our day.” “Wellness for me is when I feel healthy in my body, mind, AND spirit.” “(Meditation) helps increase your brain’s grey matter, helps you be more focused, helps with your pre-frontal cortex – it can help with many physiological challenges.” “Our choices have a compounding effect. …40% of our ‘happiness’ is due to our thoughts and actions, so there is a lot of room there.” ABOUT THE GUEST Cyrina Bullard and Liz Rutledge met years ago when Cyrina gave one of the “Angel Talks” at a school where Liz was spearheading a mindfulness course. Cyrina, a trained pharmacist who has also survived two traumatic brain injuries, and Liz, well-versed in mindfulness techniques as well as being the mother to three children, realized that they had a great connection and could be “stronger together”. They officially joined forces in 2019, just before the pandemic hit, so they pivoted their business model and now offer online wellness courses, under the umbrella of “Sustainable Happiness Together”. Ep 249E249: “Loving the World Forward” – Gayle Berry Interview
Gayle Berry is a certified baby massage and yoga practitioner, a business mentor to other women, the founder of a charity, and an all-around force of nature. Over the course of their conversation, she shares with Mighty Pete the strange path that took her from being a finance lawyer in London UK to becoming the founder and CEO of Blossom & Berry Baby Massage. Along the way she discusses passion and parenthood, how to find your driving force in life, and what the true definition of success might be. KEY TAKEAWAYS Understanding that growing your business isn’t always vertical, or linear. Gayle describes how it took 20 years for Blossom & Berry Baby Massage & Yoga to get to the place it is today: as her children have grown, so has her business. Her experience raising her children has informed how she runs her businesses. She believes entrepreneurship is a catalyst for connection, contribution, and community. Delegation – she advises that, as soon as you have the spare financial resources, to start removing things in your business that feel heavy, or difficult, or suck your time and energy, because you are so much better placed in your ‘genius zone’. Don’t waste your life and think “one day, I’ll do this”. She recounts how her husband and the father of her children, a previously healthy marathon runner, suddenly had a stroke at age 39. This reinforced to Gayle how none of us have control over what happens to us in life and helped her focus on her own path. BEST MOMENTS “The more you know yourself, the more you trust yourself, the more you become that authentic style of parent. Everyone is in a different place on that and there’s no judgment on that, at all, because you can only be the parent of the person that you are … you don’t suddenly become Mary Poppins, then go, ‘okay, I don’t get irritated by a two-year-old who won’t put their shoes on.’ Of course, you do! … It’s about being mindful about owning what’s yours.” “I’m very much a present moment kind of person. I don’t try to know what’s coming too much in the future, and the past is gone.” “Success is enjoying your life and having the freedom to choose what you wish to do.” “Being constantly conscious of everything that you do is not coming from a place of fixing or ego, it’s coming from a place of co-creation.” ABOUT THE GUEST Gayle Berry is first and foremost a mother of three, and she credits her experience of motherhood as the catalyst in helping her find her true path in life. In her early 20s, her first career was that of a finance lawyer in London, but she constantly felt awkward and inauthentic in that role. It was after the birth of her first child, Emily, where she discovered baby massage, as a method of trying to calm her colicky baby. That was the genesis of her company Blossom & Berry. Over the last 20 years, as she raised her children, she grew and developed her vision for her company: now she helps train other women in baby massage and yoga, she runs a charity for mothers in Malawi, and she tries to bring love and connection to everything that she does. Ep 248E248: “Whatever ‘Normal’ Is” – Dorsey Ross Interview
Dorsey Ross shares with Mighty Pete and the Fire in the Belly audience about what it’s like to live with a visible birth defect and facial deformity. His parents’ miracle baby, born in 1977 -- 21 years after their first child and 16 years after their second – he was quickly diagnosed with Apert’s Syndrome. Rather than institutionalize him as was recommended, his parents brought him home and raised him like they would anyone else. He found community early on in church youth groups: in the church he was never bullied like he was elsewhere; people accepted him for who he was and supported the vision for his life. This experience instilled a deep bedrock of faith in him and started him on the path of becoming a travelling minister. He is a proud public speaker and aims to inspire everyone he meets to doggedly pursue the life of their dreams. KEY TAKEAWAYS You can do anything you want in life if you allow yourself to figure out your own way of approaching your goals. Determination and faith are the foundation of a successful life. If you uncover your true self, the people who are meant to love and support you will find you. Being of service to others takes the guesswork out of having a good, fulfilled life. BEST MOMENTS “My parents always encouraged me to try and figure out what are the things Dorsey can do and what are the things that Dorsey can’t do. From that I learned…that there weren’t many things I wouldn’t be able to do, even if I had to adapt.” “(God) created me for a reason and a purpose.” “My gift is to encourage people…to inspire people to do what it is that God wants them to do… to push on in their life circumstances, in their life trials, the barriers that people put in front of them that they can overcome.” (Regarding what he’d like his legacy to be) “(Dorsey was) one of those people (who) never gave up, (who) who kept going on, (who) kept persevering in his life.” ABOUT THE GUEST Dorsey Ross was never meant to survive. Born in 1977 with a rare birth defect called Apert’s Syndrome, doctors initially told his parents that he was brain dead and that they should institutionalize him. His parents, though, wanted to see what he could do, and with their encouragement, Dorsey realized that he could do anything he wanted. After finding Christianity in his childhood, graduating high school, and taking college courses, he realized his true destiny was in ministry. He began calling different churches, asking if he could speak at their services. Decades later, Dorsey is still a “travelling minister” and a motivational speaker, as well as podcaster and tech aficionado. A person of devout faith who puts that faith into action, Dorsey is currently based in Pennsylvania. Ep 247E247: “It Takes a Lot of Screaming to Start a Chain Reaction” – Christina Vitagliano Interview
In this episode, Christina Vitagliano describes to Mighty Pete how certain “random” factors (having an abandoned building, needing to finance editing for a book she’d written) turned into the Monster Mini Golf franchise that she still runs over 20 years later. The book itself, while delayed until the COVID pandemic gave her space to publish it, is now out in the world and details, with harrowing honesty, the childhood sexual abuse she experienced in her family home. Christina shares with us her life journey, how she tries to advocate for others who can’t advocate for themselves and shows how honesty and integrity can get us through most of what life throws at us. KEY TAKEAWAYS After years of distance, the different pieces of her life fit together in a smooth arc: how she came from a working-class town where she heard from parents that it cost too much to take their kids to the movies: so, she aimed to create a cost-effective, family friendly experience by putting together her first Monster Mini Golf. It’s loads of fun, and the whole family takes down monsters, together. Her book took over 20 years to publish, but now she has the money to truly promote it, and the wisdom and experience to hold her ground no matter what the response. If it’s meant to, everything does happen in its own time. If she can help one other person dealing with the effects of childhood sexual abuse, it will all have been worth it. It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes an army to save one. BEST MOMENTS “How do I not let what happened to me many years ago affect who I am today?” (About writing a memoir that exposes her childhood sexual abuse) “The only thing you can do is hope that what you’ve written is exactly what I said – that somebody reads it and helps them. Or somebody reads it and says, ‘I haven’t said anything, maybe I should speak up, because this is happening, either in my house or to somebody I know.’” “I’m an adult now, I don’t have children, I’m successful with my life, so I can afford to take the time to yell, and I feel that…not everybody can, because they’re just trying to get by every day. I just want to be able to yell for other people who can’t.” “This has made me the kind of person that will speak up; if something is wrong, I will say that something is wrong. … I am the person who will take the right road (rather than the shortcut). I like that about myself.” ABOUT THE GUEST Christina Vitagliano is the founder of the mini golf franchise Monster Mini Golf, which has locations all through the United States and Canada. She is also the self-published author of Every Nine Minutes, a memoir of her childhood sexual abuse. Ep 246E246: “You’re Doing it on Purpose Because It’s Your Business” – Brandon Tracy Interview
Brandon Tracy is a real estate agent and business owner who has lived through at least two major dark nights of the soul: both of which catalyzed him to re-evaluate his life and how he approached his goals. He talks to Mighty Pete and the Fire in the Belly audience about how he lost everything in the 2009 recession, and how that experience helped show him where, and how, he was standing in his own way. As he rebuilt his real estate business through a measured approach of being vulnerable and transparent in his practices, he vowed he would help other entrepreneurs to avoid the same pitfalls that had slowed him down. In this episode of the podcast, we get to listen to Brandon’s unique story and how he created his consulting service, The Authentic Agent, and what he hopes to help others achieve. KEY TAKEAWAYS Curiosity about all aspects of life and being humble about the practice of learning new things, can fuel passion and success in your business. Taking personal responsibility for one’s actions is difficult, and often uncomfortable, but finding that path forward emotionally often yields results in your personal and professional life. Vulnerability breeds authenticity, which attracts people to you and to your “brand”. What if we spent eight hours a day, five days a week, truly dedicated to our goals – not just watching Netflix, but planning out an approach and trying to make it happen? There is a special equation that happens when we give time and strategy and consistency to what we want to have happen. BEST MOMENTS “Business is an incredible conduit for spiritual and personal growth…our businesses will grow in direct proportion to how we grow as people.” “A lot of people’s inability to move their business forward is just, simply, inconsistency. It’s such a simple thing, yet so incredibly powerful to show up for yourself and your business and your family and your goals and do it with great consistency.” “I feel a lot of solace in the action of life. It helps me to be ‘doing’.” “What causes people to fail is their inability to be vulnerable.” ABOUT THE GUEST Brandon Tracy has lived several lifetimes in his 40 years. Right after graduating from Arizona State with a degree in kinesiology, at the age of 24, he was diagnosed with a golf-ball-sized brain tumour behind his left eye. Lying in his hospital bed after emergency surgery, he realized he wanted to follow in his mother’s footsteps and become a real estate agent. After attaining a multimillion-dollar career in real estate, he lost everything (multiple homes, multiple cars, his entire fortune) after the economic recession of 2009, and was reduced to couch-surfing with friends while he re-assessed, once again, the wreckage of his life. It was at that point that he had two revelations: real estate was more important to him than he realized, and he was the main obstacle standing in his way. That day, the journey towards becoming his most authentic, transparent self, began. Now, Brandon is the powerhouse behind Authentic Agent: entrepreneurial, industry support that helps other real estate agents reach success by being more vulnerable, authentic, and transparent in their personal and business practices. Ep 245E245: “How Do I Get My Energizer Bunny Back?” – Avital Miller Interview
Avital Miller sits down with Mighty Pete to share with him how a serious health problem inspired her to change her life completely. Once upon a time she was a career engineer with Microsoft, but since being diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, she has dedicated her life to healing and helping others. She has studied yoga and dance, ayurvedic medicine, and the link between the subconscious mind and physical health, and shares with the audience a multi-pronged, holistic approach to better health. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes, and for some people, allopathic medicine is the right course of action, and other times, naturopathic medicine is right. The idea is to keep an open mind about what can work. Shifting subconscious habits by doing daily activities slightly differently is key to reboot our nervous and immune systems. By working with her parasympathetic nervous system through regular meditation, Avital was able to reduce the allopathic medicine she took for her Hashimoto’s disease. Human beings have an unlimited supply of energy, but when our bodies are busy “fixing something wrong”, it taxes that. BEST MOMENTS “We have a natural ability to have all the energy that we need and if we don’t have it, that means we need to change something in our life. “I believe that health issues often come about when we are going through spiritual growth.” “The thoughts that we think and how we feel about ourselves will also impact our ability to heal.” “(I think my purpose is to) help other people and have tons of fun. On a deeper level, it’s to do what I think God wants me to do.” ABOUT THE GUEST Avital Miller has been known for her extraordinary amounts of energy her entire life. She has distinct memories of waiting for nap time to be over during nursery school and being the last one to bed and first one awake in her childhood home. This all changed one year when she was on a family vacation and couldn’t stop sleeping. After returning home and after many visits to the hospital, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, an auto-immune disorder linked to the malfunction of the thyroid. She sought many paths towards treatment: she went to India to study ayurvedic medicine, she began meditating – and she realized that the more she meditated, the more her allopathic medication was reduced. This helped her change careers from being a program engineer at Microsoft and become a yoga teacher, dance instructor, author, and energy healer. She continues to use a holistic approach to healing, incorporating both allopathic and naturopathic methods, when working with her clients. Ep 244E244: “Never Say Never” – Shangrila Rendon Interview
Perhaps Shangrila’s middle name should be Phoenix, as in “risen from the ashes”. In this inspirational, hour-long conversation, Shangrila shares with Fire in the Belly how she overcame childhood sexual abuse, addiction and left her promising career as an engineer to become a professional triathlete. In 2010, she did not know how to swim, nor did she own a bike, and currently she holds two Guinness Book of World Records for running five ultra-marathons in five days. Listen to how she immigrated to California from the Philippines and went from living in her car to the pinnacle of athletic achievement through sheer grit, love, and determination. KEY TAKEAWAYS Her background as an engineer, with that facility with statistics and analysis, plus her people skills, make her an ideal coach. She has a five-point training program (physical training, nutrition, body maintenance, race strategies and mental fitness) where rest and recovery are key. Self-care is incredibly important to keep her balanced, but it must be fluid – one day it could be a cup of coffee, another some time at the beach. Stay in tune with yourself. Her best recharge tips can be distilled to self-expression, adventure, and connecting with other people. BEST MOMENTS “Just being happy helps me prioritize.” “The love that I have, taking care of myself, knowing more about what I really want and what makes me happy – I want to give that to others.” “When I work with people, my clients, I give them more than what they’re paying for, because there’s love in it.” “My ultimate goal is to help as many individuals as I can, globally.” ABOUT THE GUEST Shangrila Rendon is a powerhouse of a human being. Known as the “Feisty Fox”, she immigrated to the United States from the Philippines when she was 19 years old. Years of sexual abuse led to years of addiction issues, which she finally overcame. She was a professional engineer for over 15 years before quitting to become a professional athlete, and now she makes her living as a full-time coach, training analyst, and advocate. She is world renowned for running five ultramarathons in five days – which is incredible regardless, but especially considering in 2010 she did not know how to swim, nor ride a bike. Ep 243E243: “Getting Off Your Hamster Wheel” – Stacey Vanthuyne Interview
Mighty Pete has an exciting conversation with Stacey Vanthuyne, a life coach who is passionate about changing the dialogue of our subconscious minds through positive affirmation and practicing an abundance mindset. Full of energy and drive, Stacey shares with Pete how she almost lost her fire and how she managed to save her passion for life through a series of challenges. She adheres to the idea that success isn’t a destination but a practice and is achieved by taking that first step towards one’s goal. KEY TAKEAWAYS: An abundance mindset is more of a journey than a destination; it takes practice. But we can eventually train ourselves out of scarcity thinking through goal setting and accountability. We do not need to know the “how” to achieve something. Once we act towards our goals, the how will show itself. Our subconscious mind can help us create the reality of our dreams. With discipline and a willingness to leave our comfort zone, we can train our subconscious to work with and not against us. When (we) are our highest selves, we are one with the universe.” BEST MOMENTS “We’ve been trained that wanting more is being selfish … but “better” is a good word. By becoming more, (we) can give more.” “Our subconscious mind, our self-image, is like a thermostat. It dictates what we can achieve in life.” “If we believe we are full of infinite potential, that takes care of the question, ‘Am I able?’ The question (becomes) ‘Am I willing?’” “When you say yes to yourself and yes to having a coach in your corner, then you are successful in that moment because you took the first step in achieving a goal. … I want to break the stigma that we have to do this on our own.” ABOUT THE GUEST After years in the corporate world and in a loving but unfulfilling marriage, Stacey realized that she was losing the spark inside of herself that had always fueled her. After making the leap to end her partnership and begin a second career as a life coach, she now fulfils her mission daily to empower and inspire others. Studying with the likes of Bob Proctor, incorporating lessons from her background in change management, as well as mindfulness techniques, she creates individual coaching plans for each of her clients. Stacey is a “prairies girl” through and through: she lives and raises her two daughters in Edmonton Alberta, in Canada. Ep 242E242: “Re-Inventing the Meaning of Success” – Sammy Warrayat Interview
Sammy Warrayat, founder of The Financezilla brand and host of the Successful Millennials podcast, shares his thoughts on how he became a successful entrepreneur so young. In his 20s, he planned to exit the corporate world by the age of 30, and was able to achieve that goal partly by constantly asking himself “what if?” What if he didn’t let imposter syndrome get in the way of trying new things? What if he approached success as a mindset, and not as an endpoint in a journey? By combining his analytical nature with his intuition about business, Sammy has been able to take measured risks in his career and see them pay off. He aims to help other millennials to accomplish the same thing. KEY TAKEAWAYS Routine equals discipline. If you are disciplined about the goals you have for yourself, you will achieve results. There are five tenets to success: physical and mental health, money, passion for one’s career, relationships, and overall happiness. Warrayat concentrates on his age range (24-32) because he thinks that subset of millennials is ignored by many self-development coaches. If you focus on improving your “areas of weakness”, you will see faster overall improvement in both your career and personal development. BEST MOMENTS “What topic can I narrow down…that I feel I can provide (consistent) value on?” “My fear is one thing, but my desire to help even one person supersedes that.” “One of the best things about social media is seeing that there is a lot more (than the typical 9-5) out there. Financial freedom is the new goal.” “If you chase your passion in one area, all of a sudden it opens the doors of possibilities in other areas of your life.” ABOUT THE GUEST Sammy Warrayat is a podcaster and entrepreneur based in the state of Georgia, in the U.S. After spending over five years in the corporate world where he was a statistics analyst, he knew he wanted a career that was more challenging, and where he could also inspire others to become more independent. His talent for numbers made him a natural at day trading, which led him to financial consulting and coaching. Sammy considers his success a direct result of discipline and ability to thrive under pressure, and his personal goal of continuously improving all areas of his life. When he has any spare time, you might find him travelling, playing basketball, or reading self-development books. Ep 241E241: “Everything is An Opportunity to Evolve to a Higher Consciousness” – Ullis Karlsson Interview
In this fascinating conversation about the ways humans can spiritually heal, Ullis Karlsson discusses the impact of trauma on the body and how it can live as an energy signature within each of us. Since a life-changing moment in the winter of 2008 when she almost died, she has dedicated herself to helping others find and release their own spiritual and physical pain through yoga, journaling, and a “the only way out is through” methodology. (Note: this episode intimately discusses suicide, so please take care when listening). KEY TAKEAWAYS You can transform pain into pleasure, you can transform fear into love, but you must go “through the body” because (trauma) is stored in the body. Incorporating properly balanced masculine and feminine energies into our lives can help us achieve a more holistic state of well-being. We all need the “black void” of experience because it’s part of our potential that we have not discovered. We are all souls living in human bodies, having human experiences, but not all of us are aligned. BEST MOMENTS “If I am grounded in my heart, in my body, then there is no way I can abuse myself, or somebody else, or this planet.” “The more you move through your darkness, the more access you’ll have to your light.” “What would the world look like if we didn’t do so many things?” “We don’t have to write books, we don’t have to change the world, we don’t have to come up with big inventions…maybe it’s all about being the best version of me I can be.” ABOUT THE GUEST Ullis Karlsson is a yogi and spiritual guide living in the Västerås area of Sweden. A certified Kundalini yoga instructor, Ullis has created several courses on how to move trauma through the body through gentle movement. In her supportive role as a spiritual coach, Ullis combines knowledge of the Akashic records, yoga, and Ayurvedic medicine to tailor an individualized spiritual awakening for each of her clients. Ullis is a single parent of two teenagers, an introvert, an empath, and most of all, a multi-dimensional being. Ep 240E240: “It’s Less About Finding and More About Listening” – Katharyn Havey Interview
Mighty Pete has a delightfully offbeat conversation with Kathryn Havey, a certified “spiritual transformation” coach. She talks about her journey from the medical field to the spiritual plane, how to surrender to the process of Life, and how her courses are geared to help each of her clients to be able to clarify their goals, turn up the volume on their intuition, and live whole, fulfilled, peaceful lives. KEY TAKEAWAYS Life is hard and we’re not taught how to navigate our emotional landscapes and how to navigate these difficult things that happen in life. (We can take) these traumas, these wounds, and change the narrative and use them as accelerants to our next higher version. Anxiety and depression can be symptoms of a much deeper dysfunction, a symptom of not being in alignment with your true self. Spiritual healing needs to have a holistic approach and encompass emotional, mental, somatic, behavioral, and unconscious motivations. BEST MOMENTS “Energetic wounds are like physical wounds. If you have a physical wound, you are more susceptible to infection…it’s the same with energetic wounds. If you have an energetic wound, you are opening yourself up to the “bacteria” of the energetic world. “Hard work does not equal success. It can, but I don’t have to work hard to be happy or successful. I don’t have to… be a 10 out of 10 in anxiety and overworking and overwhelmed to be happy.” “I know that as long as I am following the next intelligent step, I’m doing the right thing today.” “Life is not going to judge you for not participating, but it will constantly present you with opportunities to heal.” ABOUT THE GUEST Katharyn Havey is a former nurse and current spiritual transformation coach, currently based in L.A. She had long struggled with anxiety and depression, which got worse during her years as a bedside nurse in a traditional hospital setting; it wasn’t until she was fired from a temporary contract when she took a three-year-long sabbatical to reassess her life. What came next was no less than a spiritual transformation, which started her on her path to become a private coach for clients wanting more out of their lives. Ep 239E239: What Are You Waiting For?” – Phil Fraser Interview
In this episode of Fire in the Belly, Mighty Pete has an in-depth conversation with the self-described “business sounding board” Phil Fraser, about what it’s like being a mentor for other business owners, taking risks as an entrepreneur, and how you can take advantage of the happy accidents that happen along the way. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a difference between being someone’s mentor (someone who’s been where you currently are and can help you through that process); a coach (someone who has a specific skill set to impart); and a consultant (the person who can give career specific advice) As one’s business grows, you will naturally employ people who are better at certain things than you are – the trick is to delegate properly. Sometimes, you will be the only person who sees what your business can become. Self confidence and faith in your own abilities is a key trait of any successful entrepreneur. When faced with a decision involving your business, consider three things: 1) whatever the “problem” is, you’re not alone – someone has gone through this before 2) what is the worst that could happen? 3) what is the best that could happen? BEST MOMENTS - “Bring me your problems, and I’ll give you solutions.” - “Hitting whatever target you set, whatever the goal is, if you get to that goal, that’s success.” - “It was a failure that, by accident, triggered an opportunity. … There are a lot of opportunities out there that a lot of people miss because they think they can’t do (it).” - “(A great question is) when was the last time you did something for the first time?” ABOUT THE GUEST Phil Fraser is a former advertising and marketing executive, based in Leeds. As a successful entrepreneur, he took one of his “far-fetched ideas” from a “kitchen table start-up” with limited funding to a multi-million-dollar sale 18 years later. Now, his enduring passion is to help entrepreneurs avoid some of the detours he took on his own path to success. With a storied background in marketing, advertising, and hustling, Phil wants to help others to find and achieve their own visions, by providing a range of services targeted at keeping his clients both in their business’ day-to-day and reaching towards the future. Ep 238E238: “The Win is In the Ask” – David Wood Interview
David Wood sits down with Mighty Pete to discuss the secrets of his success. David, a former consulting actuary of a Fortune 100 company, now runs the largest business consulting firm on record, serving over 12 countries. He helps high-revenue clients to double their profits by becoming 30% more courageous in their decisions. Listen to how he continues to challenge himself and take risks, both in his personal and professional life to keep himself deep in the flow of his own life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Considers himself a perpetual student of thinkers like Byron Katie and Eckart Tolle; the spiritual guides the professional. His core values can be distilled to a sense of play, authenticity/transparency, and courage Your actions need to be driven by passion. It’s not trying to get rid of the negative thoughts, it’s about trying to balance them with positive ones. BEST MOMENTS Risks sometimes do not work out, but the personal win is that the risk was taken. If you play by the lore of large numbers, you will eventually succeed. Some things you will be good at naturally; others will require hard work to attain. Have you loved something consistently? Go where that feeling leads you. Ep 237E237: “Have the Breakdown in Order to Have the Breakthrough” – Victoria Evans Interview
In this episode of Fire in the Belly, Mighty Pete has a vulnerable and intimate conversation with Victoria Evans, a business and life coach who aims to help women feel empowered to achieve their personal or professional goals. Victoria struggled for many years with eating disorders, and it was only after she asked for help that her recovery journey began – and when she began to understand that asking for help is one of the bravest things one can do. KEY TAKEAWAYS Perfection drives disconnection, when being connected with others is one of our basic needs Living in a space of frustration and shame prevents action Victoria wants to help people to understand and fast-track through their pain, so that they feel understood, seen and heard. There is a physiological science to positive self-talk – it provides a small hit of dopamine to your brain BEST MOMENTS Any human can do whatever they want to if they get out of their own way After years of struggling with eating disorders, she called a helpline and told someone else what she was feeling: which helped her realize that asking for help is such a huge moment of strength and courage. She helps her clients unpack their whys behind what they are doing so that they can release their shame and move forward. Her business model is based on what she needed to hear when she was younger. ABOUT THE GUEST Victoria Evans is currently based in Portugal, although her nomadic lifestyle has led her to Bali and all over Asia in the last few years. She is a business and life coach who offers both one-on-one coaching and group courses and is interested in the psychology and science behind why humans do what they do.
