Ep 62062: Dr Rob Cywes – The Carb Addiction Doc
Dr Rob Cywes Robert Cywes M.D., PhD is a clinically practicing doctor and surgeon in Florida and Idaho. His mission is educating the public about a carbohydrate addiction approach to treating obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Understanding the importance of replacing carbs in your diet with real food while simultaneously replacing carbs as a toxic, harmful response to emotional tension with a more effective diverse healthy set of emotion management tools for lifelong sustainability of mental and physical health, happiness and well-being. Converting people from toxic sugar burners to healthy fat (keto) burners while addressing the cause of addiction to carbs from an emotion management perspective. Sometimes using obesity surgery and devices as tools along the way, and helping people who have had bariatric surgery stay healthy and not relapseDr Rob Cywes is the ‘Carb Addiction Doc’ whose medical practice focuses on the psychology and physiology of carbohydrate addiction. He was not overweight until he moved to the USA and started to eat SAD (Standard American Diet) when the weight piled: he gained 100 pounds. He realised that his weight struggle wasn’t a problem with calories, but a dysfunctional relationship with a drug called sugar. When he treated sugar like a drug and himself as a drug addict, he was able to lose the weight and has remained stable for 22 years. He now recognises that there is a physiological component and a psychological component and for many, they have two jobs: firstly, deal with the psychological component in order to be successful in managing the emotional tensions which lead to secondly, dealing with physiological dependence of those instant gratification foods leading to carbohydrate addiction. Ep 61061: Suzanne Facer-Reeves – Living Her Best Life
Suzanne Facer-Reeves Suzanne Facer-Reeves has been obese all of her life and has tried most of the diets out there. It had resulted in a constant yo-yo effect that just made her get bigger. Her weight has caused medical problems and she was heading towards becoming diabetic, like her Mum who died in her early 60’s as a result. Something else had to change, she had always said that she felt it was like an addiction. When the press reported from medics that all obese people are advised to do is just move more and eat less, she would often say “No it’s not”. Finally, she discovered low carb and now knows that the addiction was carbs. Currently, Suzane is 11 stone lighter, very much in control of food and feeling the best she ever has. An incredible weight loss of journey of over 70kg (11st or 154lb). Suzanne had tried all the diets. She was a yo-yo dieter and each time would put on more weight. Then in her 50s she started to have health issues which meant that she needed to find a solution. Tom Kerridge’s Dopamine Diet book lead her to the Diet Doctor, which got her started and on her low carb journey and she hasn’t looked back. Ep 58058: Belinda Fettke – Uncovering the Vegetarian Agenda
Belinda Fettke For more than half a century we’ve been told to eat a diet high in grains and low in saturated fat and instead of improving health outcomes the incidence of non-communicable disease has escalated. Discovering Belinda's husband, Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Gary Fettke, had been targeted for 'active defence' by the cereal industry in 2014 and subsequently became the only medical doctor in the world - 'silenced' - from providing nutrition advice to his patients; people with metabolic disease and the complications of Type 2 diabetes, requiring debridement and even amputation of their lower limbs, was unbelievable... Belinda began her research into the vested interests and ideology shaping our dietary and health guidelines to clear Gary's name. She began asking why 'plant-based' dietary and health guidelines had become strict rule books, who was writing them and who was defending them! Incredibly she discovered... the answers were buried in the pages of history. Belinda Fettke was the voice during the time when her husband, orthopedic surgeon, Dr Gary Fettke was being silenced by the cereal industry. She uncovered deep in the history books, that our dietary guidelines, research and medical curriculum was being rewritten to remove animal protein and fat, replacing them with fruit, grains, nuts, seeds and plants as ‘God’s appointed diet for man’. This is clearly not evidence-based but ideological and religious. Now our doctors, nurses and dietician education is being influenced by the food industry and religious sects. Ep 54054: Dr Ruth Tapsell – Devon’s Real Food GP
Dr Ruth Tapsell Ruth is a GP in North Devon in the southwest of England. Three years ago she came across Dr David Unwin who was using lower carbohydrate diets to achieve outstanding outcomes in his patients with Type 2 Diabetes. So having tried unsuccessfully over many years to help her patients using the mainstream approach, Ruth and her team decided to offer the lower carb approach instead. Since then, they have been seeing some remarkable outcomes with many patients putting their Type 2 Diabetes into remission, losing excess weight, coming off many of their medications and benefiting from a host of additional benefits, including resolution of sleep apnoea and IBS. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought into focus the alarmingly high prevalence of poor metabolic health. The tragic collision of these 2 pandemics motivated Ruth to spread the word to other health professionals that metabolic health can improve significantly within weeks, and that this may help to improve an individual's outcome from Covid-19. To reach out to health professionals across the UK and beyond, Ruth has been delivering a series of free, unsponsored educational webinars, with her co-host, Midlands-based practice nurse Gayle Gerry. Ruth and Gayle have welcomed a terrific selection of speakers from a range of medical specialities who feel similarly passionate about sharing this good practice with other health professionals. Hopefully, as the community of low carb practitioners continues to grow, this will lead to many more patients being offered this highly effective approach and becoming empowered to regain control of their metabolic health. Dr Ruth Tapsell acknowledges that her medical school education did not cover nutrition or sleep. Even with Diabetes and Endocrinology training, it didn’t make sense that her patients were eating carbohydrate-laden food and covering it with insulin. She thought that if eating a certain way causes diabetes then by changing the way we eat it, it might be possible to reverse Type 2 Diabetes or prevent it. She didn’t discover using therapeutic carbohydrate restriction as a way to manage type 2 diabetes until three years ago. It was her husband, also a GP, who came across an article from Dr David Unwin in a medical magazine. They have started using this approach in their general practice. Dr Ruth now runs local groups for patients and webinars for health care professionals to get the word out and educate others on the use of low carb / real food way to manage their health and wellbeing. Dr Ruth featured in an article in the Daily Mail highlighting the work she is doing in helping her patients halt and reverse Type 2 Diabetes. She talks about her general practice in being a low prescribing practice and the challenges of getting others within the NHS to get on board with these life changing practices. One of Dr Ruth’s dreams is that Hartland in Devon becomes a Blue Zone, where everyone lives to 120.We talk about raising teenagers and how difficult it is in school with the food on offer and with their peers. If you are looking for the show notes on Apple Podcast please click through to the episode web page as they are not showing on Apple at the moment. Ep 50050: Netta Gorman – Life After Sugar
Netta Gorman Netta Gorman is the person behind Life After Sugar... because real life carries on even when you're sugar free. Netta has been living happily free from sugar, flour and sweeteners since July 2015 (6 years now!). She spent most of her thirties and early forties struggling with chronic constipation and digestion issues but she never thought that her love for chocolate and desserts had anything to do with it. Doctors kept telling her to eat more fibre, but this was making things worse, not better. In July 2015, she got to a breaking point where her pain and suffering was so bad that she decided to do something she'd never tried before: cut out sugar, flour and sweeteners for a temporary period of just 2 weeks. And to her complete amazement, she felt so much better that she just carried on and never looked back! One thing that still amazes her is that her tastes changed, and now she doesn't even *like* sweet tastes any more (whereas before, she was the world's #1 sweet tooth). And most of all, the one word that sums up her life after sugar is "freedom" - freedom from cravings, from energy crashes, from that love-hate relationship with sugar, from all the health issues she had. And this is why she decided to help other people to get to this place of freedom and peace with food and with themselves, with the Life After Sugar Program.Netta Gorman wasn’t overweight. She considered herself slim even if she did have a muffin top and was carrying a few extra pounds but she suffered with depression and terrible chronic constipation. She didn’t want to believe that sugar was the culprit and didn’t want to give up sugar until her pain got so bad. Her two week trial made such a huge difference that she just kept going. Netta has incorporated fermented foods into her everyday life which helps with her gut issues. I wasn't going to cut out the only thing that made me feel better. So I resisted that for the longest time.”“I went to the supermarket and just sort of wandered around aimlessly, picking things up on the shelves and putting them back again. Because I was looking at the ingredients, and they all had some form of sugar or flour.”“I finally cottoned on to the fact that real food or whole food doesn't have added sugars or grains, then I sort of had this epiphany in the grocery store. Oh, well, I'll just have fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, seafood, you know, and nuts. And I'll be fine with that.““I don’t identify myself with how I eat.”<p data-css="tve-u-17a5c7f9b1f" dir="ltr" style="t

Having tried keto twice before, Christine knew that it worked but it wasn’t sustainable for her because the foods she was eating didn’t fit into her African-Carribean culture. She then set about to keto’fy Afro-Carribean foods as she knew it would mean greater success, sustainability and stop the gain-loss cycle. I would usually lose weight from exercise.”“But my thing about this time around was that I always had enough of being in that cycle of gaining-losing-gaining-losing. I wanted this to be the permanent time, where it's gone forever. It's not coming back.““I thought to myself, okay, let me just do keto, because I've done it before, but let me try and make it in a way that I can keep it consistent and keep it forever ultimately.” “I started looking at different keto pages and the keto diet, and I couldn't necessarily find one that fits into the diet that I'm used to.”“

Ep 41041: Jen Isenhart – Behinds the Scenes of Fat Fiction
Jen Isenhart Jennifer is a principal and founder of Wide Eye Productions, a Northwest digital production company that's been creating successful films since 2000. Jennifer has ushered dozens of projects from concept, through production, to completion- from Emmy Award-winning documentaries, to educational children's programs, to branded entertainment. She knows how to weave images, sound and message into memorable films. Most recently, Jennifer directed and wrote "Fat Fiction", a film about the history of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines and the miserable failure of a so-called "low fat heart healthy diet." The film is narrated by 10-Times New York Times best selling author and physician, Mark Hyman and features interviews with world class nutrition experts and science journalists. "Fat Fiction" is available to watch on Amazon Prime where more than 500 five-star reviews rank the film as one of the top nutrition documentaries on the site. As a child, Jen always thought she had an issue with sugar. This was especially true when she would crave sweet foods and then have hypoglycemic events. As an adult, she attended a “Quit Sugar” class where she learnt the effects of sugar on health and wellbeing. Now following a low carb way of eating, her digestion is better, no longer getting tired after meals, which she puts down to eliminating sugar and grains from her diet. As a film producer and journalist, Jen was motivated to learn more about nutrition, dietary guidelines and their impact on poor health outcomes. She found that we didn’t get the truth about fats, in particular saturated fats and seed oils due to flawed research, corporate and personal interests. ‘Fat Fiction’ documentary sets the record straight and is told in a clear and accessible way, something a film can do rather than another nutrition book. The documentary shows first hand how people respond to both high and low carb diets, particularly for those living with Type 2 Diabetes. Ep 37037: Dr Jen Unwin – Fork In The Road
Dr Jen Unwin Dr Jen Unwin is a chartered clinical and health psychologist. She worked for over 30 years in the NHS and now spends her time researching, campaigning and writing about sugar addiction. She is a founding member of the Public Health Collaboration, a UK charity campaigning for better public health advice. Her and her husband Dr David Unwin, a GP have been helping the patients in his practice adopt low carb diets to reverse their diabetes. This work has resulted in several published papers and numerous conference and media appearances. She has recently published a book called 'Fork in the Road' which is a guide for people with sugar/carb addiction. All profits are for the PHC. Dr Jen Unwin is a Clinical Psychologist and lifelong carbohydrate addict. She noticed that if she came off plan it was hard to get back to it. She knew about addiction in her work as a psychologist but hadn’t linked it to food. Once Dr Jen became aware that sugars and carbohydrates can truly be addictive, she looked into more. Dr Jen trained with Bitten Jonsson a holistic addiction specialist. They recognised that the same problems a person has with alcohol or drugs can also happen with sugars and carbs.Dr Jen explains that some sugar and carb addicts have to be careful with sweeteners, nuts, dairy and alcohol as they too can influence the brain pathways. After doing all that reading and the research Ally felt it was hard not to conclude that eating low carb is extremely healthy and if you have metabolic and auto-immune conditions it is a great way to prevent them from reoccurring and to heal them.Ally noticed the difference straight away, within a week his chronic heartburn had gone and the extra weight that he had melted away and stayed off.He was so amazed that he started his own company in 2017 called Paleo Canteen. He started in a nightclub serving food. Plus he would do events on the high street and at Real Food Rocks Festival. In 2019 Ally brought out a low sugar ice cream Scoundrel which is currently only available in Glasgow. Ep 29029: Graham Phillips – Seed Oils and Why They Are Bad For Us
Graham Phillips Graham Phillips BPharm FRPharmS is a second generation community pharmacist. He describes himself as “The Pharmacist who Gave Up Drugs! “ Having played a very senior leadership role in the pharmacy profession he became disillusioned with the NHS one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare with its emphasis on waiting for symptoms to arise before treating (suppressing?) them with drugs. He pioneered a new approach using his scientific knowledge, clinical expertise and new technology which resulted in the ProLongevity service. The ProLongevity programme helps people who want to lose weight, improve wellbeing and avoid/reverse diabetes, by using new technology to monitor real-time blood sugar levels. We provide personalised advice based on your data to help you make changes to your diet and lifestyle. We avoid traditional approaches that treat symptoms after the damage has been done. Prevention is better than cure. Graham has two sons, one is also a pharmacist and the other a corporate lawyer. He lives with his partner, Karen (a GP also passionate about lifestyle medicine) in North London. Like Jackie, Graham is also an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration. So, I decided, well, let's have a look at this, Atkins. I went on Atkins induction for three months. And at the end of that, I had a non-diabetic blood glucose diagnosis. So essentially, the doctor said, ‘Well, it was a blip. We're not sure why but you know, it looks like you're fine. So whatever you're doing, keep doing it.’ Now, that sort of didn't make any sense to me, why would I have a blip? Why would I suddenly become diabetic and then change my diet and then all of a sudden not become diabetic?” “I semi-retired at age 40, in 2006, and came back to Australia. I was intending just to live cheaply on the beach in Australia, learn to cook, get myself fit, do some exercise, and work on myself. I had no other big plans other than that. I'd been burning the candle at both ends for 20 years in my career. And so I thought, you know, let's have time to focus on myself a little bit.” “So gradually over time, I stopped eating Atkins induction. I was adding more carbs to my diet but I was eating healthy vegetables and fruit, you know, eating, quote-unquote ‘healthy’.” “I went to the doctor in the emergency room with an ingrown toenail that had gotten quite nasty. The doctor said, ‘Well, that's really awful. It's going septic and you know, if you can't control your blood glucose, and I don't think you can, then that toe may have to come off’. That was like that’s the kind of moment that will set you back on the bottom. I thought, what a minute, I thought I'd cured myself of diabetes by eating Atkins? Well, I wasn't eating Atkins at that point.” “Everyone starts out just on Metformin, and we slowly increase the drugs that we're going to give you and try and hold off diabetes for as long as we can.” <p di

Ep 27027: Dr Michael Bazlinton – Functional lifestyle medicine
Dr. Michael Bazlinton Dr. Michael Bazlinton is a UK based Family Doctor (GP). He completed his GP training in 2006. Dr Michael has been practising as GP for the last 13 years. He saw in the surgery many diabetic patients which was concerning. In 2017 he started the Bodymapping Clinic. The aim of the clinic is to provide a service for individuals who want to apply science and technology to better understand and manage their health.Dr. Michael Bazlinton attended and completed the AFMCPUK training (Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice) in London in 2018. He now divides his time between being a local GP and working privately in the Bodymapping Clinic. While growing up in Stebbing Essex, with a dentist father and midwife mother, he had an appreciation for real food’s impact on health and wellbeing. At university, however, the demands of medical school meant that his food choices were less than optimal. This started to show up in his health. In 2014, his brother gave him a copy of Christopher MacDougall’s Born to Run which started him on his journey to health and wellbeing. Not only did he turn his health around he started helping his patients make changes to their nutrition. His GP practice took low carb on board and are now working out ways that they can help more people without burning out.Dr Michael Bazlinton shares how his low carb keto journey has informed his GP practice to actively help patients take control of their own health. He also recognises the limitations of the NHS and standard dietary advice which motivated him to set up a functional medicine private practice. Ep 26026 AMA on stalls, strict keto vs low carb, ketones, blood glucose monitoring and loose skin.
AMA on stalls, strict keto vs low carb, ketones, blood glucose monitoring and loose skin. This week’s episode is ‘ask me anything’ (AMA) which we wanted to answer questions from our listeners. Questions for our next episode can be submitted through http://fabulouslyketo.com/ama/ The following questions were asked by our listeners. Why have I stopped losing weight? I lost 30 pounds over about a year. Now I’m stuck. Still very low carb - less than 20gHomeostasis is a state whereby the body reaches a steady-state Mix things up and keep tricking your body into giving up / losing fat This can be done by tracking - that you’re not over or under eatingCarb creep from too much dairy and/or nuts Mixing things up like fasting for longer / shorter periods of time, different patterns.Watch out for the usual suspects such as stress, sleep or over-exercising.You may not be losing weight on the scale, but changing shape, so make sure you take pictures and measurements. Do you have any opinion on whether a strict keto diet is more beneficial than low carb, high-fat diet for autoimmune disease? An autoimmune disorder is one whereby the body’s immune system mounts a response to a particular type of tissue in the body Conditions such as Hashimoto’s, arthritis, lupus or MS What are the symptoms - such as inflammation, pain, energy and then you need to find your personal threshold for symptom relief Depending on the severity of the symptoms As a suggestion starting with strict keto would be a good place to start and then reintroduce carbs to your threshold symptoms using a symptom diary to see the effects/results. Conversely, the other way is equally as fine for compliance Do higher Ketones mean better weight loss?Ketones are a by-product of fat oxidation. The Phinney and Volek range is between 0.5 - 3.0 mmol/L There is no correlation between the amount of ketones and rate of fat loss Can I have more information about blood sugar and monitoring For blood glucose can use a machine like the KetoMojo or CGM Ketones can be measured in urine (dip strips), blood (monitor) and breath (Ketonix)Consider the cost of the strips into how and why you need to monitor your progress I’m worried about loose skin, can I do anything to help? A really good resource to explain what and why there is loose skin is Ken Berry’s YouTube Are ground almonds the same as almond flour? No, they are different Almond meal coarser and darker as it is made from raw and unpeeled nutsAlmond flour is finer as it is ground from peeled, blanched nuts which are softer If needing larger quantities for baking, consider buying your nuts wholesale and mill yourself Resources Mentioned Dr Boz YouTube on GKI ratiohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?

Ep 21021: Terri Lance – Being Mindful of your Emotions and Behaviours with Food Choices
Terri Lance Terri Lance comes to this LCHF/Keto arena as part of her own personal and now professional journey. She battled obesity all of her life since childhood and was diagnosed with type II diabetes in her early 30s. It wasn’t until the age of 45 that she learned that she could actually manage her weight and reverse her diabetes through her dietary approach and also fasting. Professionally, she started as a middle school teacher before attending graduate school to earn her PhD as a psychologist. She then spent about 14 years as a therapist in private practice. During her health transformation, Terri began working as a coach at The Fasting Method. She now enjoys coaching others to achieve their weight loss and health goals. Terri is still often surprised about how her life is because in her 30s her life was on a different trajectory. She was getting sick and whilst initially she thought she had time to wait until her 70s to do something about it, she soon realised that she didn’t have that luxury. The success of changing your diet is influenced by your mindset. There is a great power in understanding your behaviours and triggers. Fasting played an important role in Terri’s health and she still uses it today. Danielle Coonerty and Erika Burt Dan and Erika are a keto couple who have been together for 14 years, living in Newcastle, Australia with their 2 rescue cats. They both have struggled with losing weight in the past and tried many different options. Keto is what has worked for them and between them have lost over 90kg (14 stone or nearly 200lb). When you are dieting it is the opposite.” “[Shake diets] it is so hard, how do you adapt to any social situation, you can’t? How do you come back, you haven’t learnt anything, you haven’t made any sustainable changes apart from how to make a shake?” “It kind of just stuck, all the timing seemed right, you’re eating delicious food and you don’t feel deprived.” “Oh my gosh, I am feeling better and then obviously once you start losing weight as well, there is a lot of momentum to keep going, and this time we found something that worked for us.” “I like to say it is our ‘new normal’, eating low carb and eating keto is the normal. We are not perfectionists by any stretch of the imagination, but keto is ‘the normal’. So if we eat the occasional carb, that is the unusual, which you always come back to ‘the normal’.” <p dir="lt

Ep 19019: Graham Phillips – The Pharmacist That Gave Up Drugs
Graham Phillips Graham Phillips BPharm FRPharmS is a second generation community pharmacist. He describes himself as “The Pharmacist who Gave Up Drugs! “Having played a very senior leadership role in the pharmacy profession he became disillusioned with the NHS one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare with its emphasis on waiting for symptoms to arise before treating (suppressing?) them with drugs. Prevention is better than cure.Graham has two sons, one is also a pharmacist and the other a corporate lawyer. He lives with his partner, Karen (a GP also passionate about lifestyle medicine) in North London.Like Jackie Fletcher, Graham is also an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration. He believes that the world has become dominated by Big Food on the one hand (makes you sick) and Big Pharma on the other (makes you 10% better). In the end the science must prevail.Community pharmacies are part of the Public Health network and they see 1,600,000 people per day for health related reasons, which is more contacts than the rest of the NHS put together. As a pharmacist he had the fundamental scientific knowledge to go back and look at the science.Graham calls it the “Tyranny of Food” he would be starving at breakfast, as he finished breakfast he would be thinking “What's for lunch?”. He would be ravenous at lunch and at the end of lunch he would be thinking “What’s for supper?”. He was hungry the whole time. Now he isn’t hungry.Having won many awards in the pharmaceutical industry Graham ended up frustrated because he felt they were locking the door after the horse has bolted. If you stop taking your hypertensive medication or diabetes medication you are still hypertensive or diabetic. Medication isn’t curing people it is suppressing the symptoms. People are ending up with more and more medication.Graham understood the hormonal response to food and energy balance and the importance of the gut microbiome combined with a Freestyle Libre constant glucose monitor (CGM) he started to help people change diet and lifestyle to make lasting changes. He was having great results which was more exciting than spooning tablets into people.Graham thinks pharmacies should be remunerated for not dispensing medication. He talks about a prevention program would ensure we would be in a better place to avoid getting COVID-19 or getting less symptoms in addition to the other benefit of being that the vaccine would work better.Graham believes we have to debate the science because that’s how things change.Sleep is also very important. Did you you know if you have 2-3 nights of bad sleep and then have a flu jab it halves the effectiveness? We go on to talk about seed oils and its history, as well as the history of Corn Flakes. We are very fortunate to be able to have Graham back on the show to follow up with other topics. Ep 17017: Siobhan Huggins – Citizen Scientist Helping to Crack the Cholesterol Code (part 2)
Siobhan Huggins is an independent researcher focused on the science of keto, carnivory, inflammation, insulin resistance and how they all interact with each other. Over the past four years she has lost 80 lbs (36kg or 5.5stone), put chronic depression into remission, and made numerous health improvements - all from going on a ketogenic (and eventually carnivorous) diet. She hopes to continue learning the science so she can share it with others, in the hopes of better understanding why ketogenic and carnivorous diets appear to work for improving so many conditions, and why people sometimes struggle even when implementing these dietary strategies and doing everything "right". She is on the board of The Citizen Science Foundation, and is a frequent contributor to CholesterolCode.com where she posts on topics like lipids and immunity, heart disease, and inflammation, as well as the results of her self experiments with diet.In this episode Siobhan continues to explain the role of insulin, cholesterol and inflammation in a low carb, keto and carnivore way of eating lifestyle. We learn about some of her self-experiments, the results of medical tests and the importance of establishing a baseline. She talks about her relationship with her doctor and how she builds that trusting and respectful relationship.Siobhan explains the lipid triangle. We have a couple of corrections from Siobhan:Two corrections on my part, though. Apparently Dr Attia only recommends Therapeutic Lipidology – looking over old blog posts on CholesterolCode, I do mention starting with this and then went on to read Clinical Lipidology right after, so that is correct. With that said, I’m not sure where I saw Clinical Lipidology recommended, but it wasn’t from Attia. Ep 14014: AMA – Christmas, Social Drinking, NAFLD and more
AMA - Christmas, Social Drinking, NAFLD and moreThis week’s episode is ‘ask me anything’ (AMA) which we wanted to answer questions from our listeners. Questions for our next episode can be submitted through http://fabulouslyketo.com/ama/The following questions were asked by our listeners. If you “come off the Keto wagon” for some treats at Christmas, how do you kick start it again and will you have to go through the “keto flu” again?! Mel It will depend on how long you have been eating low carb keto for, which means depending on how fat adapted you have become, you will likely not expect to experience ‘keto flu’ if you have a higher carbohydrate meal. Secondly, it will depend on how long you consume carbohydrate heavy food, whether it is one meal or one week. The weight gained then will be water retention associated with glycogen storage. What I would encourage is reflecting on the idea of being ‘going off’ plan as this needs to be a lifestyle choice which you can plan ahead to social events. Before heading out, why not have a meal of bacon and eggs, which means you feel fuller. If you are served carbohydrate options on your plate, eat fatty protein first, vegetables leaving the potato (for example) last. Does fat cause fatty liver disease? Charlotte No, Robert Lustig’s Bitter Truth about sugar explains that it is fructose which is attributed to fatty liver. You can watch his video at this link: https://robertlustig.com/sugar-the-bitter-truth/Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is where the excess consumption of carbohydrate is deposited in the liver as fat. This deposits create inflammation and then becomes fibrosised causing scarring which is non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The scar tissue is the same as that of an alcoholic. What to drink when socialising? Donna There is a great infographic produced by Diet Doctor which you can check here: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/alcoholAnother great resource is the website and app produced by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO). What is good about this resource is that you can search for the brand or variety of drink, and it lists the carb content. What butter is best? Amy Typically any butter which does not contain any blend of vegetable oil is best. That is, pure butter, and not the ones labeled as spreadable. When looking for pure butter, consider that those which are produced by grass fed cows have a better fatty acid profile than grain fed. In Australia and the UK, most dairy products are from grass fed cows. Just starting out, it has been 2 days, and feels like my body is craving sugar. &

Ep 13013: Nikola Howard – Getting Out of Diet Prison
Nikola HowardNikola says that she started to gain weight when she entered puberty. She put this down to good too much ice-cream and a decreasing desire to exercise. In 1999, aged 29, weighing 19st 2lbs, an Evans size 26 she was concerned about the arthritis in her right knee, both wrists and left shoulder. Having lost 3 and half stone with low fat diets, and then gaining it back again, along with the extra 4 stones, what hindsight now as a very hypoglycaemic person, the periods of being hungry and ratty on those low fat attempts were increasingly wearing. She would reach for the raisins, as a fast sugar fix, which became her saviour food. What we now know as a typical “High and crash” insulin reaction. It was a work colleague that introduced her to the “Dr Atkins’ New Diet Revolution” which he had used to lose weight and lent her the book. The principles of low-carbing changed her life. She discovered freedom from Hunger. As a confirmed carnivore, low-carbing is a way of eating (WOE) where she can eat the foods that she loves. She believes that there is no sense of deprivation, as you can still eat Curry, Chinese, Steak, and (with preparation) the ice-cream and the biscuits, finding that life is just better without the Sugar and Starch. As we will hear, her journey hasn’t always been smooth sailing, with some obstacles getting in the way and interrupting her low carb living. She has endured prolonged stalls, managing various health issues, side effects of treatments yet she found her way back to low carb and is now coaching. She now works with clients who struggle with being overweight, tired, who may feel that they suffer with shame, guilt and anxiety in order to get some space, clarity and reclaim their health. She seeks to free people from Diet Prison and wishes for the UK to stop eating itself sick by being able to disrupt the diet industry paradigm, moving away from that shame and guilt that comes with sense of victimhood associated with food and bodies. Despite being borderline obese with a BMI of 30, blood tests showing he had a fatty liver, he still considered himself to be in good health, doing the right thing with eating low fat foods and exercising. It was through his long standing academic friendship with Prof Tim Noakes, that he read Gary Taube’s ‘Good Calories Bad Calories’ that challenged the idea of the low fat diet. Embarking on his own journey, reading and self experimentation, Dr Brukner was able to see first hand the impact of eating real food. He lost weight, more energy, mentally sharper as went from eating three meals and three snacks to two meals and a small snack of a handful of nuts. Blood tests showed that his fatty liver had resolved and was completely normal. Frustrated by the mixed messages in the public space, he wanted a platform to campaign for dietary change. He founded the not-for-profit organisation ‘Sugar By Half’ as a public health campaign to promote and advocate for healthier eating by reducing sugar consumption. He authored ‘A Fat Lot of Good’, a best seller book which provides an engaging and easily accessible approach to eating real food.
