Ep 156156: Matthew Dowse – Human Nutrition Lifestyle
Matthew Dowse Matthew Dowse is a sports science nutritionist who specialises in nutritional therapy and dietary education. We are here to improve quality of life, health, nutrition & lifestyle choices. Nutrition for athletes to find their optimal performance is a unique interest of mine, but everyday nutrition must come first. Exercise alone cannot get you into a pure fat burning metabolism. Some kind of exercise, especially strength exercises are a must for an optimal healthy lifestyle, but a bigger consideration is to get nutrition right first. I’m on a mission to ensure as many people recognise this as possible. Matthew’s Top Tips Reduce the amount of processed food you have. Add in a little bit more exercise. Wendy Armstrong Wendy Armstrong says: I have been qualified as a nurse for 26 years. The last 16 of those years has been as a practice nurse in the same practice specialising in the management of Type 2 diabetes. I had always questioned why we treat a disease of insulin resistance with drugs that increase insulin secretion or with insulin itself. In 2015 I read the 8 week blood sugar diet book and it all clicked. I started eating low carb myself having gone gluten-free after seeing a naturopath in 2017 to help reverse post viral fatigue then gradually I have transitioned to keto then 16 months ago to a more carnivore way of eating. Wendy’s Top Tips If you are carnivore, you have to eat the fats – particularly animal fats. Electrolytes are your friend and your saviour. Circadian rhythms and the sun are important – perhaps more important than diet – Get early morning, midday and late afternoon sun every day. Ep 148148: Vic Basmadjian – The Real Low Carb Beast
Vic Basmadjian Vic Basmadjian is an advocate of low carbohydrate and ketogenic diets after recovering his own poor health. At 55, he was obese, weighing in at almost 300 lbs., and had high blood pressure and sleep apnea. Over the past few decades, Vic had repeatedly attempted to lose weight through calorie restriction, and although he had often lost significant amounts, he had never been able to sustain the weight loss. It finally occurred to him that cutting out refined carbs- such as rice, potato, and pasta- seemed to help with his weight loss efforts. Soon after, his son asked Vic if he knew anything about the ketogenic diet and that led Vic to start doing his own research on the internet. Vic used the ketogenic diet to sustainably lose one hundred pounds, while improving his health and quality of life, and he has now turned much of his attention to helping others. Vic recently spoke with The Society for Metabolic Health Practitioners about his life-changing transformation and plans to earn the Metabolic Health Practitioner accreditation! Vic’s Top Tips Address satiety – see which foods give you the highest satiety. Identify your trigger foods – know your Kryptonite. Ep 146146: Geraint Hole – Heart attack survivor!!!
Geraint Hole I’m 57 and I am a husband to Louise, my rock and sweetheart. I’m a dad to our 2 grown ups kids, and a grandad (Grampy) to my daughters’ 4 beautiful children. I work as an Employment Specialist for a mental health charity supporting people with serious and long term mental health issues to find meaningful paid employment. Having been following a keto / low carb lifestyle since October 2020 and leading what I believed to be a much more healthy and active lifestyle, in January 2023 I suffered a major heart attack!!! I’d had some warning signs a few weeks earlier and had ignored them, but this was such a shock too, a literal and physical bolt from the blue!!! I was rushed to hospital and had a stent inserted into the main coronary artery, and another artery cleared with a balloon. Because the blockage was in the main artery, the heart attack affected a large part of the heart and caused a large amount of damage, and I was told I had been left with serious heart failure, which meant my heart wasn’t able to pump as much blood with each beat. I knew this was as a result of my poor lifestyle and dietary choices, together with my poor mental health issues catching up with me! In the 4 months since the heart attack I have followed my own path to recovery and chosen to not follow the standard of care from the NHS. Stephen’s Top Tips Know your Why. Plan and prepare. Ep 145145: Stephen Thomas – The Carnivore Experience
Stephen Thomas Hi there, I’m Coach Stephen, and I’m here to help you on your journey to optimal health. With a BSc (Hons) in physiology and health sciences, as well as a background in sport and conditioning science and the psychological aspects of athletic development, I’ve got the knowledge and skills to give you the tools you need to succeed. Also, as a specialist practitioner in Obesity and Diabetes, and a qualified phlebotomist, I’ve helped countless people achieve their health goals. My qualifications as a phlebotomist give me the knowledge and skills to draw blood safely and efficiently, while my specialist practitioner status in obesity and diabetes means that I have the expertise to help manage these conditions. And with over 500 five-star reviews on Revero and Facebook, and around 100 video success stories on my website and YouTube channel, I’m confident that my approach to eating gets results. Personally, I had to say goodbye to my high-carb, skim milk, orange juice lifestyle. Despite 50 years of not smoking or drinking, working out three times a week, and running three times a week, I still found myself fat, pre-diabetic, needing a colonoscopy, and with a CAC of 639. But with the right approach, you too can achieve optimal health. Stephen’s Top Tips Cut out all the junk like seed oils, refined carbohydrates, sugars and artificial sweeteners. When carnivore – don’t undereat, eat plenty of food. Don’t worry about organ meats, eat what you like, eat a variety of what you enjoy. Resources Mentioned Meat RX – Dr Shawn Baker https://carnivore.diet Richard Smith https://theketopro.com X3 Bar https://www.jaquishbiomedical.com/x3-bar/ Quotes by Stephen Thomas “Nothing beats getting older and realising actually you got it all completely wrong.” “I thought this is it, it is all genetics.” “Even though I was the poster boy for the food guidelines and the low fat, don’t have salt, don’t have any red meat, make sure you have lots of fruit and veg, which I did. I didn’t smoke, I didn’t drink, I was an absolute state when it came to health.” “If people are looking to improve their health, it all starts with that one small step.” “The best time to train is when you can do it.” “Transitioning into carnivore took me years.” “If you are having cravings for things that you used to eat, that’s normally a sign of not eating enough.” “It’s very difficult to eat too much ribeye because it’s so satiating. It is very easy to eat too much yoghurt because it isn’t satiating.” “I love ribeyes and I didn’t eat a ribeye until I was 55 and I had never even seen one.” “When you are eating this more species appropriate diet, it does seem that your allergies change or they completely go.” Connect with Stephen Thomas on social media Instagram: www.instagram.com@theukcarnivore YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CoachStephen Website Details: www.theukcarnivore.com App Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pgdjvg7q9fwv.pasvovw0lapp Apple</p

Ep 144144: Jenny Phillips – Inspired Nutrition
Jenny Phillips Jenny Phillips is a quaified nutritionist and yoga teacher, and part of the team writing five diabetes and weightloss cookbooks with Katie Caldesi and Dr David Unwin. These books really help to change lives as they provide the ‘why” – the science- plus delicious recipes. She has worked with food since her own recovery from breast cancer in 2003 (20 years ago!) where the appliance of science helped her to optimise her own health through food and lifestyle. So far she is on the right side of a predicted 50% chance of a recurrence (scary!) and has reverse aged in the process! In addition to nutrition coaching and yoga classes, she offers fabulous low carb retreats in the West country – a chill zone for healthy living. It tends to be in younger women and it tends to be really nasty. My risk of recurrence was 50%.” “As a nation we are overfed and undernourished.” “I love this idea of reverse aging.” “The nice thing about low carb is that it can be really simple.” “That gives people a lot more satiety, so they are not ravenous all the time and it is quite a revelation very often for people.” “We didn’t used to have Tescos on every corner when we were cavemen.” “One thing I see quite a lot of particularly in healthier women or women that perceive they have a healthy diet is low protein.” “I do think it is challenging if someone is excluding all animal products.” “You don’t want to spend all your time as a slave to the oven.” “People are also quite shocked, they seem to eat so much really good food and they don’t put on weight. So that’s a bit of a revelation to people.” “Think about

Ep 143143: Viv Hamilton – Low Carb Vegetarian
Viv Hamilton Prior to switching to a low carb way of eating, Viv Hamilton had been obese for about twenty years and had had the usual experience of yoyo dieting. After a serious car accident in 2019, she was told by the surgeon that she would develop severe arthritis and need a knee replacement within about 3 years. After about 9 months of rehabilitation, the arthritis symptoms developed and began to rapidly worsen. Luckily Viv and her husband are patients at the Freshwell surgery. When Viv’s husband was recommended to try going low carb, she decided they would go low carb together. She thought it would help if she lost some weight before the anticipated knee replacement operation. However, there didn’t seem to be much information about going low carb as a vegetarian. Cutting out wholegrains went against the traditional advice for vegetarians who are told to combine pulses with wholegrains to obtain complete proteins from plants. Viv did her own research and found out that small seeds (flax, hemp, sesame, chia etc) are not only low carb, they have a better nutritional profile than starchy grains and they are at least as good in complementing the profile of amino acids in pulses. Switching to low carb was transformational for Viv. Within four months the arthritis symptoms had disappeared. In total she has lost over 6 stone, and is now in the healthy weight range. IBS symptoms have also gone away and she has been de-prescribed most of her blood pressure medicine. As a way of saying thank you, she volunteered to help others on their low carb journey, volunteering for Freshwell and the Colne Valley PCN and joining the charity, The Public Health Collaboration as an Ambassador. Viv’s Top Tips We are all individuals – find what is convenient that fits in with you. Fits your lifestyle as well as your metabolism. Stay away from ultra processed foods. Be aware that caffeine can dis-regulate insulin and can produce sugar spike. Steve Bennett The current decline in our nation’s health makes me frustrated, furious and fired up to create change! 133: Dr David Unwin – The Low Carb GP [Replay]
Dr David Unwin Dr David Unwin FRCGP works at the Norwood NHS Surgery in Southport near Liverpool, UK where he has cared for the same population since 1986 as a family doctor. To date 102 out of 201 of his patients with Type 2 diabetes have achieved drug-free remission. This gives a remission rate of 50% at 30 months duration of a lower carb diet, one of the best results for any clinic in the world. For the past few years, he has been a UK Royal College of General Practitioners expert clinical advisor on diabetes. Dr Unwin’s work has been covered by both BBC, C4 & C5 television, The New Scientist, The Times, The Daily Mail and The British Medical Journal. And what was I doing for them? Not a lot. So it’s very depressing.” “I have to say, I am often disappointed that the doctors are not more curious. As you know, you’d hope that being a scientific sort of mind means you’re curious.” “I often say to patients, ‘oh, your doctor must be so proud of you. Has he not asked why and how you did this?’ I’m terribly disappointed if healthcare professionals are not interested. Some of them, I think they’re so tired, as I was tired.” “I’ve had an eight-fold increase in the numbers of people with type two diabetes, but I’ve also had increases in hypertension, heart disease, obesity, and I don’t have any more doctors in the practice now than I had years ago and no more resources. So actually, being a doctor now is much tougher. It’s terrible. And I

132: Belinda Fettke – Uncovering the Vegetarian Agenda [Replay]
Belinda Fettke For more than half a century we’ve been told to eat a diet high in grains and low in saturated fat and instead of improving health outcomes the incidence of non-communicable disease has escalated. Discovering Belinda’s husband, Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Gary Fettke, had been targeted for ‘active defence’ by the cereal industry in 2014 and subsequently became the only medical doctor in the world – ‘silenced’ – from providing nutrition advice to his patients; people with metabolic disease and the complications of Type 2 diabetes, requiring debridement and even amputation of their lower limbs, was unbelievable… Belinda began her research into the vested interests and ideology shaping our dietary and health guidelines to clear Gary’s name. She began asking why ‘plant-based’ dietary and health guidelines had become strict rule books, who was writing them and who was defending them! Incredibly she discovered… the answers were buried in the pages of history. Who was THE ONE? 131: Kathy Watson – Low Carb Doesn’t Avoid Illness
Kathy Watson Kathy Watson says the Summer of 1976 was a scorcher and we had a drought. I was then twelve and it was a summer of pure freedom. Freedom as a child running around without a care in the world, camping in the garden, swimming, beach days, etc etc That was before adolescence hit and my then my lifetime became a trip of going on a diet , not dieting, pigging out, going on a diet , not dieting, pigging out! dare I say more! Over and over again. But one thing back in 1976 that struck a chord with me was if you google it and see archive photos of the general public out doing their thing you will definitely notice that people in general were much thinner, children ran around with ribs showing and no they were not under nourished. They were a normal weight. It’s hard sometimes to remember that. If you now Google photos of last year’s summer you will know what I mean. My low carb lifestyle and enlightenment started four years ago. I will be 60 years young this year so work out the maths. A lot of years wasted trying to do the right thing, failing and now knowing through bad advice. Ep 128128: Varina Emblen – A Table Changed My Life
Varina Emblen I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 24 years ago. The prospect for me was very bleak indeed: a failing pancreas, high blood pressure or even toe or possibly foot amputation. The only treatment was medication or weight loss. So I chose weight loss and embarked upon a very long and dispiriting battle with my weight over the next few years. At each annual review to check my blood sugars and other aspects of being diabetic, I was encouraged to consider medication but I always refused in favour of losing weight. I had many successes over this time, but once I had achieved a healthy weight, I resolutely failed to maintain it. This was largely due to my lifestyle which included a very stressful job, with long hours and lots of travelling and two teenage children. Food, particularly sweet food was my comfort and I rarely went through a day without consuming a biscuit, cake or sweets. When I retired from work my eating habits changed and I did manage to lose a little weight, but despite all my efforts I could not get down to a healthy weight and try as I might to eat healthily, my weight loss was stalled. On the advise of my Practice nurse, I was offered an appointment with the surgery’s Life Coach and Social Prescriber, Olly. With patience and empathy, Olly shared with me the work of Dr David Unwin and the success he had had with his diabetic patients using a low carb diet. This was a lightbulb moment for me and over the coming few appointments I had with Olly, I realised that both my lifestyle and my diet had to change. Using a number of links Olly sent me to review, I drew up a plan of action, beginning with converting to a low carb diet. After a couple of months, I started intermittent fasting and then the following months I upped the amount of exercise I was doing on a daily basis. These three things: Low carb eating, intermittent fasting and daily exercise in a fasting state saw my weight fall off. I have lost over 15kg in 8 months and am still going strong. I have lost 12 cm from my waistline, have lots more energy and am sleeping like a baby every night. The data from my most recent diabetic review has been the most gratifying ever. I have blood sugars well within the normal range, my kidney function is excellent and my blood pressure is within normal levels. I have reversed my diabetes after 24 years. Low carb eating, intermittent fasting and daily exercise are now my way of life and whilst some days can be challenging, I plan meticulously and stick to my three strategies and bit by bit I am heading in the right direction. I feel very lucky to have been so well supported by the health team at my surgery, particularly Olly and I look forward to being alive and kicking for a good few years more! Varina’s Top Tips If you have been diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetic or pre diabetic, low carb works. Put yourself first, your needs are your health. Your health is important. This is a lifestyle change, it is not a diet. This is how you are going to live your life for the rest of your life. Peter Ballerstedt Peter Ballerstedt (also known as Don Pedro, the Sodfather of the Ruminati) earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Georgia and his doctorate at the University of Kentucky. He was the forage extension specialist at Oregon State University from 1986 to 1992. He currently works in the forage seed industry. Peter’s personal experience has led him to re-examine human diet and health. What he has learned doesn’t agree with the advice given for the past several decades. Peter is an advocate for ruminant animal agriculture and the essential role of animal source foods in the human diet. He strives to build bridges between producers, consumers, and researchers across a wide variety of scientific disciplines – increasing awareness of metabolic health and ruminant animal agriculture’s essential role in social, economic and ecological sustainability. Peter has spoken at many different events in the US and internationally. Many of his presentations are available on YouTube. Peter and Nancy live in western Oregon with their dogs, Conor, Noni and Iris!. Peter’s Top Tips Cook ahead so you have food ready to go. Eggs are a super food. Be unconcerned about the label claims. Ep 124124: Ian Lake – Educating Doctors and Clinicians About Type 1 Diabetes
Ian Lake Dr. Ian Lake is a GP in the UK. Having Type 1 Diabetes himself, he adopted a ketogenic lifestyle 7 years ago, which he feels positively transformed his daily diabetes control to near non-diabetes levels. He runs a website dedicated to providing information about ketogenic lifestyles in Type 1 diabetes and this month is launching a comprehensive course for healthcare professionals. He self-experiments on ketogenic diets in type 1 diabetes and in 2019 he completed a 5-week solo and unsupported run covering over 700 miles on just 9% carbohydrate. In 2020 he took it to a whole new level by organising the zerofive100 project, a 100-mile team run over five days fully fasted with zero calories. Ian’s Top Tips These top tips are aimed at Type 1 Diabetics If you have injected insulin and your blood sugar isn’t coming down – do some physical activity. There are certain times of day when glucose control is harder (not food related) try skipping a meal. Ep 123123: Mark Hancock – Being Diagnosed With Type 2 Diabetes At 39
Mark Hancock I recently featured in a book written in the UK by Dr David Cavan. This was the piece which covered quite a bit of my background. In 2005, Mark left his job at a bank to become a self-employed financial adviser. He feels that the stress of the job combined with his already unhealthy lifestyle, contributed to the diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes in 2010 when he was just 39. At that time, he weighed 102kg (224 pounds). He says “I felt sluggish, overweight, tired and just felt run down. I had symptoms of diabetes such as repeated thrush and a tingly foot. I didn’t realise how bad I felt though until I got better.” When he was diagnosed, he was advised to follow the Eatwell guide and lost weight probably because he cut out all the unhealthy takeaways. He also threw himself into long distance running, joining the local parkrun and completing The Great South Run, a 10-mile road race in Portsmouth, every year. The running, together with medication appeared to keep his weight and blood sugar under control until 2016, when they both started to increase again. He was told that his condition was progressing, and he would need to increase his medication. All changed, however, when he happened to hear Dr Michael Mosley being interviewed on the radio. He explained that people with diabetes have been advised to eat the wrong foods, and that it was these foods that were leading to the condition being chronic and progressive. “As I’d been threatened with more drugs, I felt I had nothing to lose. I bought “The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet” and gave it a go. I cut out all bread, pasta, rice and sugar. No more breakfast cereals and no potatoes with my dinner. I started cooking too which was a first for me. I realised that preparing meals isn’t as difficult as I thought, and I enjoyed the reward of eating what I’d cooked rather than putting a ready-meal in the oven for 20 minutes. The changes in my weight and blood sugar levels were very quick. I didn’t find it too hard. I can be tempted to eat the wrong things and if out with friends I won’t get too anxious over what I eat, but I don’t let that allow me to “fall off the wagon” for days on end. I’m lucky like that but I think you need to know yourself and whether you can have the odd thing without undoing all your good work.” He lost nearly 20kb (44 pounds) in weight and his diabetes is now in remission. He feels much better, both mentally as well as physically. “In 2018, I was invited to parliament to speak alongside Professor Roy Taylor and Dr David Unwin and others who had found evidence for diet reversing diabetes. If you had asked me previously to stand up in front of audiences or push myself forward like that, I would have avoided it and thought of any reason to get out of it. My confidence just wasn’t there. I feel like a fog lifted from my head in 2016 and I now find myself doing all manner of things and I absolutely love it. I put this down to how I now feed not only my body but my brain too.” Mark also became an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration, and this has opened many doors to help others put their type 2 diabetes into remission. For the past 3 years he has been working with his local Primary Care Network to put on a low carb programme for patients which, combined with movement, combatting stress and prioritising a good night’s sleep, has led to some wonderful outcomes. “So far, we have run 16 groups with an average of around a dozen participants in each group. The first 20 patients alone lost an average of 9 kg (20 pounds) in weight and reduced their HbA1c by 19 mmol/mol (1.8%). It is truly heart-warming to see how happy people are, now they have a plan that works. I’m now a Health and Wellbeing Coach and employee of the NHS. I never would have believed it!” Recently I’ve been working on a project through the Public Health Collaboration to create a new running group for the real food eate

This concept is now being explored with collaborating researchers and may potentially help explain much of the phenomenon around high cholesterol on a low carb, ketogenic diet. I think the state of existence where you are having trouble parking your triglycerides in your adipocytes is a systemic state of atherogenicity.” “If I had to pick a marker that I would probably look at in succession it would probably be insulin.” “I am glad that there is more and more of a focus on metabolism in general.” “I am still shocked that insulin isn’t a part of every major blood test or even basic blood test.” “Why weren’t we testing for insulin.” “I’ve got a bright light to throw on this, which is the low carb movement itself. The low carb movement is, in my opinion, maybe one of the biggest grassroots scientific movements of it’s time, maybe in human history.” “Part of metabolic health is understanding your metabolism. It is not trying to find these exact guidelines and getting focused on that. Ep 121121: Steve Bennett – Fat and Furious
Steve Bennett The current decline in our nation’s health makes me frustrated, furious and fired up to create change! I am driven by a feeling of duty, to pass on the knowledge I have gained in turning my own health around (I was obese for over 25 years) to others. To do this, I spend most of my working days on several different approaches to health education. I am passionate about preventing and reversing, diabetes type 2, obesity and metabolic syndrome across the UK. Therefore, I spend my working days on several different approaches. I created an organisation called Health Results to help people explore, measure, and improve their metabolic health and I am a benefactor to two charities the Public Health Collaboration (PHC) and the Colourful Life Foundation. I am a dad to 7 wonderful children, 2 adorable grandchildren and husband to a great wife. My day job after the morning school run is following my passion to educate our country about metabolic health and I also executively chair several companies that I previously founded. I love adventures too, and have trekked to the North Pole, sailed across the Atlantic, undertook some mammoth Strive Challenges and more recently, along with several members of the PHC cycled 500 miles in five days with Zero calories! See “Zero five 500” on YouTube. * I have wrote several health books, Primal Cure, Britain is Sick, Primal Gourmet and more recently Fat & Furious. * In 2020 I founded Health Results to help the nation get healthier. www.healthresults.com *I am a patron and main benefactor to the charity PHC (Public Health Collaboration), which aims to put prevention at the heart of the nation’s healthcare system. Ep 120120: Graham Phillips – Turning The Tables
Graham Philips Graham Phillips BPharm FRPharmS is a second generation community pharmacist. He describes himself as “The Pharmacist who Gave Up Drugs! “ Having played a very senior leadership role in the pharmacy profession he became disillusioned with the NHS one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare with its emphasis on waiting for symptoms to arise before treating (suppressing?) them with drugs. He pioneered a new approach using his scientific knowledge, clinical expertise and new technology which resulted in the ProLongevity service. The ProLongevity programme helps people who want to lose weight, improve wellbeing and avoid/reverse diabetes, by using new technology to monitor real-time blood sugar levels. We provide personalised advice based on your data to help you make changes to your diet and lifestyle. We avoid traditional approaches that treat symptoms after the damage has been done. Prevention is better than cure. Graham has two sons, one is also a pharmacist and the other a corporate lawyer. He lives with his partner, Karen (a GP also passionate about lifestyle medicine) in North London. Like Jackie, Graham is also an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration. He believes that the world has become dominated by Big Food on the one hand (makes you sick) and Big Pharma on the other (makes you 10% better). In the end science must prevail. Ep 117117: Katie Caldesi – Low Carb the Caldesi Way
Katie Caldesi Katie and her Italian husband Giancarlo first came to public attention when they featured in the BBC2 series Return to Tuscany in 2006. The series, which was broadcast worldwide, followed the pair as they set up and launched a residential cookery school in Tuscany. The show climaxed with them getting married in a dreamlike Tuscan wedding. Since then they have both been frequent visitors to our screens appearing as guests on an array of foodie programmes such as BBC1’s Masterchef, Saturday Kitchen and Sunday Brunch. As business partners, they own the Caldesi Group of Restaurants and Cookery Schools with restaurants in London’s Marylebone and culinary mecca Bray in Berkshire. Their cookery school ‘La Cucina Caldesi’ was launched in Marylebone in 2005 and this year they celebrated 15 years of business at Caldesi in Campagna, their restaurant in Bray and 20 years in Caldesi in Marylebone. Katie started researching the low-carb diet when her husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and gluten-intolerance through nutritionist Jenny Phillips. She then became aware of the work of Dr David Unwin (the low-carb GP). Following advice from both Jenny and David, she began to develop low-carb dishes and soon the whole family had cut right back on the carbs. There were immediate benefits to this as the whole family had more energy, they all lost weight, Giorgio’s headaches lessened and Flavio’s skin improved. Giancarlo lost almost 4 stone in weight which led to his diabetes going into remission. Inspired by this Katie wrote her first of five low-carb cookbooks ‘The Diabetes Weight-Loss Cookbook’ which included some of the recipes she had developed for the family, a section on why low-carb works with Jenny Phillips and a foreword by Dr David and Dr Jen Unwin. The book was serialised in the Daily Mail and became an Amazon bestseller which led to Katie writing another four low-carb cookbooks. Her latest cookbook ‘The Low-carb Italian’ launches in March 2023. Her e-book ‘The Caldesi Low-carb Christmas’ is available as an e-book or paperback and includes festive low-carb, gluten-free recipes that are a treat for all the family and ideal for entertaining too. Katie has also written 12 other cookbooks covering the food of Italy, the art of preserving food as well as a compendium of salad recipes from around the world. Ep 116116: Geraint Hole – From Long Term Anxiety To Taking On Life
Geraint Hole I’m 56 and I am a husband to Louise, my rock and sweetheart. I’m a dad to our 2 grown ups kids, and a grandad (Grampy) to my daughters’ 4 beautiful children. I work as an Employment Specialist for a mental health charity supporting people with serious and long term mental health issues to find meaningful paid employment. I have struggled with my weight since I was in my 20’s. I’ve tried all the main diets – Rosemary Connelly (low fat), Slimming World, Weight Watchers, the Cabbage Soup Diet etc. And I’m sure like you, I had some successes for a few weeks or months, but inevitably they / I failed. They weren’t sustainable ways of eating and I’d go back to eating my “usual” diet and the weight would creep back on and I would end up heavier/fatter than I was before the diet!!! I hated being overweight. I always felt other people were judging me! I hated going clothes shopping and looking at myself in the mirrors from a 360 degree angle – front and back views, warts and all!!!!! I hated being sweaty all the time, especially in summer! I did have a period of success when I went into the fitness industry as a personal trainer and did a lot of activity and exercise and kept my weight at a reasonable level for me. For various reasons I stopped training and my life became a car wreck of stress and anxiety, and I piled on the pounds again. So, I thought I’d share some of the info and my insights that I’ve picked up along the way on my journey since October /November 2020 into the low carb / keto world. So, why choose low carb / keto? The appeal to me is that this way of eating is what our ancestors ate like! We are humans because our ancestors ate fatty meat. If we’re carried on eating plants like chimps or gorillas we’d still be just another type of ape spending 12hrs a day eating plants, sleeping in trees. The second reason is to help maintain a lower insulin level in your body. As I understand it elevated insulin levels, which are caused by eating foods that spike blood sugar, like the high carb, highly processed diets we’re advised to eat, are believed to be the root cause of many modern chronic diseases like diabetes, obesity, heart disease, dementia and even cancer. Restricting your carb intake will help you maintain a lower and more even insulin level. For the first time in my life I feel in control of my food intake. I no longer feel like I am ruled by food or hunger. I no longer have cravings for junk fake foods like sugary drinks, sweet treats, cakes, biscuits or crisps! It has worked for me, and I’ve lost over 4 1/2 stone in since November 2020. I was obese, unhealthy, I had low energy and had to snooze every afternoon! and felt like I was on my way to some bad health outcomes. The SARS-COV-2 situation focused my mind on improving my metabolic and general health, and losing weight. So, having listened to many hundreds, possibly 1000’s, of hours of podcasts and YouTube videos/lectures, I decided to take the step to take responsibility for my health and cut out processed foods, sugar, cereals, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and seed (vegetable) oils from my diet. I started gradually and just cut bread, pasta, potatoes and rice from my diet. For me I knew I had to get rid of the starchy carbs out of the house, and therefore have less temptation to eat these addictive foods! Having my wife adopt the low carb lifestyle at the same time has been a massive help as we’re in it together and support this lifestyle change together. Over a period of weeks I gradually moved breakfast later and later in the morning, until in the end my first meal of the day was lunch at noon. I view it now through an ancestral lens. Our ancestors wouldn’t have had food available to them 24hrs a day!! They would have had periods of no food available to them and this natural “stress” on our bodies seems to have beneficial consequences accor

Ep 115115: Dorian Greenow – Keto Mojo
Dorian Greenow In 2015, Dorian Greenow weighed 210 lbs and had nearly all the markers for metabolic syndrome. He and his wife, Gemma embarked on the ketogenic lifestyle, began monitoring their glucose and ketones to dial in their nutrition choices. Within six months, Dorian had lost 47 lbs and came off all medications. The Ketogenic lifestyle changed their lives, but ketone testing was expensive and inaccessible to many in need. In 2017, Dorian successfully launched Keto-Mojo, lowering the cost of ketone testing by 75%, offering the first affordable, accurate blood glucose and ketone testing meter. With the release of the GKI (Europe) and GK+ meters, and the HIPAA and GDPR compliant MyMojoHealth, their platform now provides real time data for monitoring and compliance, resulting in better health outcomes. Dorian speaks at numerous conferences globally. Additionally, he and Gemma also founded The Ketogenic Foundation, a non-profit charity, fostering Ketogenic Education, Medical Research, and Information Sharing for the benefit of improving the health of humankind. Ep 114114: Joanne McCormack – Fat Is My Friend
Joanne McCormack Joanne McCormack is a UK doctor and former GP who first learned the powerful value of Ketogenic diets in 2014, first personally and then with her patients. She was a GP for 30 years but only started to see people reversing their obesity and type 2 diabetes once they started to use tools like Keto, low carbohydrate and intermittent fasting as ways of life. It was as if the UK “woke up to Keto” and progress was made for the very first time. She recognises that the UK “ Eatwell” Guide is potentially harmful for diabetic and overweight people (as it recommends too many carbohydrate containing foods). She helped launch the charity the Public Health Collaboration, with the dual aim of educating health professionals and the public about better ways of looking at food, and campaigning at national level for better government dietary advice. I never felt tempted to buy a box of cereal. I never felt I wanted to have some.” “That’s where the vegan space is going, it is going into processed foods.” “Nobody needs to b
