Edinburgh Man #137

We’re back! Not only that but summer seems to have arrived in Edinburgh. Like REAL summer. Hot and sunny and generally rather wonderful. So wonderful that I couldn’t really face being cooped up inside recording a podcast. As a result it’s one of those no doubt intensely irritatingly, badly recorded ones that I do from the streets and canals of the city. I also left you with a bit of a cliffhanger last time, as Doctor Nic was about to head off to the golden state. Well, you’ll also be pleased to know that both Edinburgh Man Jr and Edinburgh Man Sr survived being left alone for a week. Although during that time £20 managed to get lost, a copy of “Cokefloat” by PAWS was destroyed, and an iPad got left out in the rain. But apart from that, nothing went wrong. We also went on holiday to the West Highlands of Scotland, with (wait for it) NO INTERNET. Once the shakes subsided after 48 hours or so a very relaxing time was had. So your host is refreshed, and full of rambling chat for Podcast 137. Edinburgh Man #137 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. JoFranna – “Coney Island” (Played courtesy of JoFranna / Olive Juice Music) 2. Edinburgh Man #136

A pre-recorded podcast tonight! Doctor Nic is leaving the Edinburgh Men (Senior and Junior) for a while, so preparations are afoot every evening this week. As a result, instead of the regular live show there’s a pre-recorded one from atop a very sunny Calton Hill in Edinburgh. It’s also the last podcast for a couple of weeks on account of summer holidays, so luckily there’s some decent music in here, if not decent patter. We start with a great track from the upcoming album by Colour Me Wednesday, some pizza core (at least that’s what they call it) by Brighton’s Contard Delusion, and some brilliant post-punk from France’s SANDIE TRASH, out on Bleeding Gold Records next Monday. A Friday night podcast. How confusing. And how rock-and-roll. I forgot that last night was Leith Late, where shops and pubs all along Leith Walk have special events and in-stores. Actually, perhaps saying “I forgot” is somewhat incorrect. As has happened for the last three years I didn’t realise until a flood of twitter and Facebook messages about it on the day itself. Anyway, rather than do the podcast I jumped on a bus and headed to the other end of town to catch some great free music down in the Boda Bar. All of this meant that there was no Thursday night podcast. So my apologies to anyone who relies on it to spice up their Friday morning commute. At least you’ll have something to listen to on Monday. THE LAZY EDINBURGH MAN MID-YEAR REQUEST SHOW! Look at all those wires! That’s the sort of nonsense needed to do the lazy Edinburgh Man mid-year request show. Yep, for the second year in a row I’ve been really busy at the start of June. So much so that I wasn’t able to do ANY preparation for tonight’s show. So I turned the playlist over to the twittering listeners – and (thankfully) they came up with the goods. Most of the music featured has been played on the podcast throughout 2013… there may be some rogue tracks, and there’s definitely one that was rather selfishly my request. But all good stuff. Let’s see what everyone wanted to hear again… Edinburgh Man #134 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Sparrow and the Workshop – “Shock Shock” (Played courtesy of Song by Toad) 2. The irrelevant photo accompanying this week’s podcast is because I’ve been continuing to walk to work for the last month. 7 miles round-trip each day in an effort to be less fat. By-and-large this is working, although it has resulted in the destruction of two pairs of Converse, which to be fair were already passed their best. Anyway, I am now using “proper” “grown-up” walking shoes as I go to work. Upon arrival these are swapped for the less practical but ultimately cooler Converse. Shown here in their olive green variety. Anyway – that has nothing to do with the podcast. So there you go. Loads of great music on today’s show – that much for sure, including fantastic new tracks from the fantastic new albums by A Brief View of the Hudson and Just Handshakes. There’s also a track from the most recent Toby Goodshank album. He’s playing next week in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Get along people. Edinburgh Man #133 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Edinburgh Man #132

What…? WHAT…!? I’m starting off the podcast by playing some Disco (or DIYSCO to be more precise). What is going on here? Yep, it’s an upcoming release on Soft Power Records from Dublin’s Tieranniesaur. I couldn’t help it. When I first heard the track I was like, “Hmm, not sure that it really fits into the podcast” But after about the sixth listen I figured the decision had been made. Perhaps there’s some residual craving for pure unadulterated pop after the weekend’s Eurovision Song Contest. Either way, it’s not the only electronic pop in tonight’s show. There’s some synth-pop wonder from Kid Canaveral, who are playing a free gig tomorrow night at The Caves along with The Last Battle and Randolph’s Leap, and a track from the upcoming album from Capitals. Don’t worry – there’s also some indie-pop, lo-fi, slow-core and other hyphenated genres to keep you happy. I know I know that I shouldn’t… especially when there are at least two great looking gigs this Saturday night, but I can’t help myself. It’s Eurovision. Car crash television for sure. Forget about watching Doctor Who behind the sofa – this is the scary one. Terrifying song after terrifying song, terrifying presenter after terrifying presenter, terrifying satellite link-up after terrifying satellite link-up. It’s incredible. Anyway, enough about that. Tonight’s podcast wasn’t live. Not because I didn’t try. Something has gone wrong in the Intertubes, and I wasn’t able to fix it. So tonight it’s just me, and a slightly cheaper microphone. Edinburgh Man #130

Poor Edinburgh Man Junior… Last he surprised us with a late night vomit. Lovely. As a result Edinburgh Man Senior’s plans to go to the Sparrow and the Workshop launch gig tonight have been cancelled. As some sort of conciliation we start the show off with a great track from their new album. There’s also a play of the new single by Adam Stafford, both on Song, by Toad records. They really need to stop putting out such great releases, otherwise this podcast will just end up consisting entirely of their music. It’s also a pre-recorded roaming outside broadcast as I walk through the streets of Edinburgh attempting to buy a coffee from Brew Lab… Edinburgh Man #130 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Oh, man. I spent too much money on Record Store Day. Such a sucker. On the plus side I have lots of cool new vinyl to listen to, so there’s that. The day itself was good fun – starting off in Avalanche, then passing by Coda on The Mound to check out their new vinyl room, and finally heading down to Stockbridge to catch Wounded Knee on the steps of Voxbox… And all that before lunchtime! I also popped over to Vino Wine Shop in Morningside to pick up a four pack of the special edition microbrewed Song, by Toad beer. Mmmm. Only one bottle left – the Magic Eye Red Rye which I’m going to crack open while recording the podcast. Music-wise, there’s a track from the upcoming EP by Edinburgh’s Book Group, a couple of tracks from Record Store Day purchases, and a great track by A Little Orchestra featuring Ballboy’s Gordon McIntyre. Edinburgh Man #128

Another exciting early podcast. As I was recording this my throat was getting progressively croakier, but I soldiered on like a trouper. I’m sure it was only a couple of weeks ago I last had a sore throat. Kids, eh? Anyway today’s podcast has more than a little Records Store Day theme. Look, I know most of the releases are overpriced and aimed at suckers. But I like vinyl, and I’m a bit of sucker, so I’m looking forward to it. There are also some official and unofficial releases from Scottish-based labels that I played on the podcast tonight, including two tracks from Song, by Toad’s ridiculous “Beer vs Records” releases, a track from the Adam Stafford cassette on Gerry Loves Records, and a self-released track by Randolph’s Leap (also on cassette – crazy). Add in some bad chat about wind and broken record players, a brilliant track from the upcoming eagleowl album, and you have Edinburgh Man #128. Edinburgh Man #127

Right. What’s been happening this week? 1) I’ve been doing a daily podcast at junior.edinburghman.com for #30daysofbiking. Initially I thought it would be an interesting daily podcast where I cycle to glamorous locations around in Edinburgh. In fact it’s normally me speaking into my phone somewhere along my commute. 2) Edinburgh Man Junior (the real one) has been waking up early all week. Teeth related I suspect, but that doesn’t make it any better. Anyway, this is the reason why today’s podcast is another early doors one. 7pm. I wonder if anyone listened… 3) My record player is still broken. It needs a new motor. This has got me down a wee bit. On the plus side I now own a Fisher Price wind-up record player from the 1970s. This is good. Edinburgh Man #127 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Hot Dolphin – “Go Team USA” (Played courtesy of Hot Dolphin, Released under a Creative Commons licence) 2. Edinburgh Man #126

A “secret” “live” podcast this week! Normally I do the podcast live. 8pm every Thursday (put it in your diaries). This week, however, I did something a bit different. Basically getting the live podcast ready requires a bit of faffing about.. preparing this and that, getting the technology working… that sort of thing. Today, and in fact all this week, has been pretty busy so I wasn’t able to get everything ready for tonight, so instead I thought I’d pre-record the show at some point during the evening “at my leisure”. In the end I realised that if I plugged in a single wire I could make still make the show live, so with about 3 minutes notice on twitter I did a “secret” “live” podcast. I’m not sure if it was any more relaxing than normal, certainly the requisite amount of inane chat is still present. Edinburgh Man #126 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Sniff, sniff, sniff… Yet another cold thanks to Edinburgh Man Junior’s snail-like trail of snot he’s been leaving around the house. Just in time for a four day weekend too! Woohoo! As ever, I planned not to speak much in an effort to save my throat. As ever, that didn’t quite pan out like I intended. Fuelled by some Drambuie (free samples welcome) and Hershey’s Kisses (hmm… maybe not) we get through the podcast. Edinburgh Man #124

It’s one of those weeks where I feel like I’m just fighting off tiredness. There’s been a lot of those of the last year of so. To be fair, today I actually am fighting off tiredness. For the purposes of work I had to go down to London yesterday. Partly because of a general aversion to the extortionate cost, but also a general aversion to all airports we went down on the train. The 5.40am train. The day went like this: bed-taxi-train-taxi-meeting-taxi-train-taxi-bed. As I write this post and prepare the podcast I am still recovering. And still looking forward to bed. Anyway, on today’s podcast a couple of tracks from the Bushwick Book Club (that’s an actual book club, not a band), new tracks from Tear Talk and entertainment for the braindead… And maybe an oldie. Edinburgh Man #123

Thursday again! The weeks just fly by don’t they? You know, I think I’ve missed the three year anniversary of the podcast. It was sometime towards the end of February if my memory is correct… which it rarely is. Anyway, last year I think we figured out it the podcast came into being on the same day that Stu Lewis started The Tidal Wave of Indifference blog. As if that wasn’t enough of a weird coincidence, Stu and I went through to Glasgow last week to see the wonderful My Bloody Valentine at the Barrowlands. It was a brilliant gig. And loud. I mean, LOUD. My earplugs were stuck so far into my ears I could feel them at the back of my throat! Anyway, a top night all round. Although I did end up losing my keys and having to get the locks replaced in the house. So a top, expensive night all round. On tonight’s show… some new stuff, some old stuff. You can tell this one is well thought out. Let’s just get cracking. Edinburgh Man #122

The plan was to do this one live for the first time in a couple of weeks, albeit an hour earlier than normal. Basically over the last week or so Edinburgh Man Junior has been waking up in the evenings… and waking up with a certain amount of volume. As if by some sixth sense exactly 9pm too. Obviously Doctor Nic would be around, but like I say he’s a bit loud. I mean really loud. So, hopefully he won’t wake between 8pm and 9pm, hence the earlier show. It makes me realise how lucky we’ve been over the last year, so fingers crossed this is just a little blip. Anyway, today on the podcast we start with a track from the wonderful new Kid Canaveral album. iTunes tells me that I’ve played this track 35 times since David dropped off a CDR of the album before Christmas. I think that’s probably a conservative estimate. There’s also a track from one of my favourite albums on the year so far, Rick Redbeard’s “No Selfish Heart”. Lots more too, so let’s stop blabbing and get on with it. Edinburgh Man #122 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Edinburgh Man #121

I’ve used that photo before haven’t I? Ah well. So another pre-recorded podcast this week. Basically my Thursday night was gearing up to be a night of craziness, so I recorded this early on. In the end it was fortuitous that I did because Edinburgh Man Junior (who normally doesn’t make a sound all night) kicked off big style at the normal podcasting hour of 9pm. Eventually he settled down about 40 odd minutes later, but I suspect if the podcast had been live it would have been rather swiftly curtailed. Anyway, in keeping with the last series of daily podcasts back in December and early January I thought I’d make this one all artists that were new to me and the show. It least, that was the plan until I listened to the wonderful new Conquering Animal Sound single. I mean, how could I not play it? It sends shivers up my spine. Oh, and there was a new track from Shy and the Fight , so you know… and then there’s the track that’s 85 years old. But the rest of the artists are new to me… Edinburgh Man #121 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Emmas – “The Ride” (Played courtesy of The Emmas, Released under a Creative Commons licence) 2. Oops. So I forgot that I was going out tonight. Pictish Trail and eagleowl at The Caves, no less. Unfortunately it clashed with the normal podcast time, so some rescheduling was required. I did try asking the bands via the medium of twitter if they’d be up for moving it, but sadly they weren’t. So instead there’s a prerecorded edition of the show this week. Even more excitingly I did one of those outside broadcast episodes as I walked to work. So there’s some idilic sounds of nature, punctuated by heavy breathing from yours truly. So… that experiment doing the podcast on a Tuesday night didn’t last very long. We’re back! On a Thursday! This feels more normal anyway. Oh, and it’s Valentine’s Day too. As such this week’s podcast is guaranteed 100% romance free. There’s even a track about a penis, so what more can you ask for. I’ve also got a sore throat and cough – in fact, that’s why the podcast didn’t happen on Tuesday night. In the end, my throat is the same if not worse tonight, but the intention is that this will have less chat, and more music than normal. Let’s see how that works out… Edinburgh Man #119 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. And… we’re back in the room. February 2013 already. Crazy. Another year and still no jet pacs, etc, etc. After taking my now annual “holiday”, at least from the world of podcasting and by-and-large social media, you’d think I’d be all refreshed. Well, you’d be wrong. Hopefully the paracetamol will kick in early on during the podcast and we can all enjoy some top new tunes. Scotland’s finest Randolph’s Leap and Sparrow and the Workshop kick off the show with their new singles. And in keeping with the theme of the short daily podcasts I did over Christmas, there are few bands that a totally new to me, and new the show. Exciting! Best of 2012 - Part 2

I have my party hat on, which can mean only one thing… It’s the best tracks of 2012! Numbers 25 down to (that all important) number one. Hooray! For the first three weeks of December the listeners to the Edinburgh Man Podcast have voted in their hundreds (yes, really) for their favourite three tracks that were played on the show throughout 2012. This isn’t meant to be a definitive best of the year poll, however fame and fortune (*) await the winners – just ask The Spook School who won in 2011, and The Last Battle who were 2010’s victors. Who will be crowned the king(s) and/or queen(s) of the Edinburgh Man Poll for this year and be worthy of wearing the foil crown? Well, you could probably peak at the playlist below and figure it out, but why not listen to 2 hours of the best music of the year. Trust me, there’s some pretty decent stuff in here. * This may not be accurate. Best of 2012 - Part 1

That time of year again. It’s the first half of the best tracks from 2012 as played on the podcast, and as voted by the listeners. Again I thought I’d have to combine the results of the poll with my own list, but in the end hundreds and hundreds of votes were came in. So with the exception of a few equal placed entries somewhere in the forties where I made a casting vote, this is basically your poll. I almost fell at the last hurdle too. I work up ill this morning – every time I moved I felt like I was going to throw up. Luckily I didn’t, and luckily I made it to end of the day to do the show. As a result no port is being consumed this time however. Boo. Evil Hand – “The Waves Still Come” (Played courtesy of Evil Hand) 50. Jo Mango – “Cordelia” (Played courtesy of Olive Grove Records)49. Last Friday I went to the Song, by Toad Christmas party at Summerhall in Edinburgh. It consisted of a brilliant line-up of bands and artists from the record label. As well as being the launch gig for the new EP by King Post Kitsch, there were also sets by newly the signed (announced on the night no less) Adam Stafford and Sparrow and the Workshop. It was a top evening, and much (Song, by Toad) beer was consumed. I chatted to a couple of people at the gig who really enjoyed the Edinburgh Man Junior podcasts I did throughout November, so today’s podcast borrows some ideas from those. It was recorded as I walked to work. No, really. I walked through the streets of Edinburgh talking loudly into my phone looking like a right nutter. Edinburgh Man #117 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. WITH DAVID MACGREGOR FROM KID CANAVERAL The nights are fair drawing in. On this cold, damp December evening the podcast is brightened up with a visit by David MacGregor from Edinburgh’s Kid Canaveral. Not only has he brought his sparkling wit, but also two tracks from their upcoming album, “Now That You Are A Dancer”, which comes out in March on Fence Records. The Canaveral’s new single “Low Winter Sun” is perfectly suited to this December night, and we feature the first ever play anywhere of the track “Who’s Looking at You, Anyway”. Hooray! Also on the podcast, as if that wasn’t enough, there are tracks from many of the bands playing at the sold out Baubles III, Kid Canaveral’s annual Christmas Party, which is taking place on the 22nd of December. “Wow”, I hear you say. It’s an early doors podcast! 11 o’clock in the AM. Can you believe it? As if that wasn’t already crazy enough, I’ve just finished cooking a chilli. Mad. Anyway, today is a day off. Or at least, a day off work. It’s not really a day off. I had a spare hour today and thought it might be fun to sneak in a daytime podcast. I’ve also got the gasman coming to fix the boiler (I’m writing this before the show… Will he come during it? That would be exciting), a parent’s meeting at Edinburgh Man Junior’s nursery, and “babysitting”. Does it could as babysitting when it’s your own child, not really. On the show, new music from The Spook School! Hooray! Also some more from that Blood Cave EP, shoegaze from Lontalius, and indie-pop from Cape Canaveral. Edinburgh Man #114

So this is a bit of an experiment… For the last couple of weeks I’ve been doing a daily podcast at junior.edinburghman.com. As part of that I wrote some nerdy scripts that automatically post the podcast from a Dropbox file. It seemed marginally successful so I’ve tried to extend it to the normal podcast. If everything goes to plan this should have all been automatically posted to both Mixcloud and the blog just a few minutes after the live podcast finishing! Of course, it almost certainly won’t go to plan, will it? If the link has been posted to Twitter 1,000 times, or if the podcast is only 2 minutes long, or if the text for this post cuts off in the middle of a word, then you know what went wrong. On the show tonight the brilliant new single from KEEL HER, fuzzy garage from Honolulu’s Blood Cave and lo-fi punk from Teeside’s Year of Birds. Folk pop from the upcoming album by Edinburgh’s Arran Arctic, and some dream pop from The Sea Life. Eclectic? I think s Edinburgh Man #114 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. After a bit of a crazy busy day at work my brain wasn’t really functioning for this podcast. In fact, I wasn’t sure if I had the energy to record one. But in the end, my body and mind was revitalised by a lovely letter from the lovely Spook School, along with their latest 7 inch single. That and the Earl Grey Redbush. That sorted me out. Not enough to write a proper blog post though. This is your lot. I’m off to bed. Oh, and check out junior.edinburghman.com for my new daily podcast! Yep, you heard that right. Daily. Mad. I knew it. I knew it. The technical issues that have been plaguing the Interweb connection at Edinburgh Man Towers finally came to a head during today’s live podcast. Actually, that’s maybe being a tad melodromatic. Massive apologies to those who listened live – the dodgy router that came from my ISP decided to reset about halfway through the show. It always comes back, but there must have been 5 minutes of downtime in there somewhere. Those of you “lucky” enough to listen afterwards won’t have this issue, due to the power of the pause button. On the podcast a brilliant track from the new Dressed Like Wolves album. Top indie pop from Dude York and Post Modern Team, some epic shoegaze from those Plastic Animals, and a brilliant indie-rock track from Schwervon! In fact, Schwervon! are playing tomorrow night in Halifax (West Yorkshire, not Nova Scotia), Glasgow on Saturday, and Aberdeen on Sunday. You should really get along and see them. Go on. I’m writing this before recording the podcast… so let’s hope it worked. Mainly because I’ve been having technical issues (as always). My router managed to pack up yesterday, so as a replacement I’m using my Raspberry Pi. This little box has been sitting on my desk for a while waiting for me to find something to do with it. Well, it’s time has come. Let’s hope it worked. Music wise, two tracks from two bands who are playing at the Tidal Wave of Indifference gig this Saturday night at the Wee Red Bar at Edinburgh’s College of Art. The tracks by The Early Morning Satellites and Fuzzystar are both brilliant and I really should have played them on the podcast before now. We’re back! Copacetic! Last week’s annoying cough and sore throat has (more or less) passed, so the podcast returns for another exciting meander through an eclectic mix of new music. Recently I’ve been trying to mix up the musical styles a little bit. In particular some more noisy stuff to keep you all on your toes. I was concerned that this would result in less people listening, but in fact the number of people downloading the show has increased! Damn! Just for that I start off the show with Toronto based punk band The Soupcans and a track from their debut LP out soon on Telephone Explosion! (That’s their exclamation mark, by the way). There’s also a track from my current favourite musical style – european surf punk courtesy of The Dark Colours Since 1685. It’s not all noisy rock though – indie-pop from The Spook School, pop-punk from Destroy Nate Allen and post-folk from entertainment for the braindead all feature in tonight’s magical musical mix. Croaky throat, sniffy nose, seeping eye. I’m a picture of health this week. As a result I try (and naturally fail) to limit the chat to the bare essentials. Who would have thought? On tonight’s podcast; punk from Germany’s Sad Neutrino Bitches, a remix of Rob St. John’s wonderful Sargasso Sea by Edinburgh’s FOUND, and a brilliant sneak preview of a track from the upcoming Adam Stafford album featuring Anna Miles from The Maple Leaves, and Matt Brennan from Zoey van Goey. Also on the show, music from WereWyatt on Georgia’s Athen’s Horse Party, Glasgow’s Randolph’s Leap on Peenko Records, The White Album (that’s the band’s name, in case you’re wondering), Chatham Rise, and podcast favourites Swearin’ (yes, again). Again with the 8pm podcast. Another early one. I think it’s safe to assume that the “usual time” for the live podcast is now 8pm UK time. That is until Edinburgh Man Jr’s sleeping patterns change again. Oh, and speaking of tales of parenthood I promise I won’t regale you tales of domesticity this week. Honest. Well, maybe a little bit. Music-wise some more lo-fi acoustic punk from Devil’s Coachwhip, indie-twee + human beat-boxing in the form of Blanket Truth, and I seem to confuse the live listeners with a bit of the old post-hardcore from Apart. Guess what? Small child nighttime activities mean it’s another rambling, shambolic, sleep deprived podcast. On top of this, I’m feeling somewhat dodgy thanks to some ill-advised “nacho” bean burgers. Mmm… Nice. No doubt I confuse regular listeners too by starting the show off with some Edinburgh hip-hop courtesy of the wonderful Stanley Odd. “Marriage Counselling” is taken from their new album Reject which came out this week. Also on the show, new singles from Meursault and entertainment for the braindead; a brilliant track from Tucson’s Devil’s Coachwhip; and another track from that P.S. Edinburgh Man Jr is adopting a new routine which clashes with the normal time of 9pm for the live podcast, so today’s show was recorded an hour earlier at 8pm. I wondered if anyone would listen… or rather, if anyone would tweet at me. But after pleading for contact, we managed to get up to 7 interacting listeners by the end of the show, so that wasn’t too bad. Music-wise, we start off with the brilliant new single by Edinburgh’s Withered Hand. There’s a fantastic tune from Dublin’s September Girls, coming out on a 7 inch single in October on Scotland’s Soft Power Records, and there’s also some dream-pop from Indoor Voices on Bleeding Gold Records and OH!Hello. Edinburgh Man #105

A special early evening podcast. This probably meant no-one listened live… although since I’m writing this blurb over my lunch hour on Thursday afternoon, who knows. Perhaps the technology failed and there wasn’t even a podcast at all. Then I’d look foolish. Anyway, I’m getting quite into the Paralympics this week, and as a result the podcast was recorded two hours early so I could watch the 100m T44 final at 9.15pm with Oscar Pistorius, Jerome Singleton and Jonnie Peacock. Of course, that’ll all be over by the time you read this… perhaps I should just stop babbling. On today’s podcast… a teeth related track from Brighton’s Shrag in honour of Edinburgh Man Jr’s first tooth, which is slowly making an appearance. There’s a fun Fall influenced track from the new Mark Wynn album, some indie-pop from the likes of Lightning Love and loads more too. Edinburgh Man #105 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Edinburgh Man #104

The podcast returns! And only just. I’d forgotten that I’d wiped my laptop between this show and the one a month ago. Unfortunately not only had I lost all the settings, but I also failed to even install the applications I use for recording and transmitting the show! Disaster. So it’s been a mad dash for the last hour or so as I tried to get it all back up and running. If the sound is a bit weird, that’s why. On the plus side, at least people could hear me. That’s something. Today’s musical genres: anti-folk, represented by honeybird & the birdies and the Elastic No-No Band, indie-pop courtesy of podcast favourites Zapruder Point and The Spook School, and some lo-fi garage from the likes of Paws and Mexican Slang. Hooray! Oh, and apologies… I sniff (more than normal) my way through tonight’s show. Small child germs strike again. Edinburgh Man #103

This seemed like a good idea at the time. Ah who am I kidding, it never seemed like a good idea. Edinburgh Man Jr has developed a rather avant garde sleeping pattern over the last week which has reduced the amount of podcast preparation to nil. So instead it’s a “listener’s choice” episode! Twittering listeners chose their favourite tracks (live) from all those featured on the podcast so far in 2012, and I tried to string it together with some chat. Like I say, it seemed like a good idea… Edinburgh Man #103 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. By Toutatis – “World’s Worst” (Played courtesy of By Toutatis) 2. After last week’s rambling debacle I tried to be more professional this week. I made notes and everything. Did I pull it off..? Well, probably not. Turns out the end result is pretty much the same with or without notes. Anyway, today’s show maybe has a bit of a garage-rock thing going on? A great track from the Spice Hound Music Co. EP kicks the show off, there’s the brilliant anthemic (yes, I know that’s not a real word) new single from By Toutatis, and a track from the new EP from Edinburgh Zed Penguin. Loads and loads of other great tracks too. Edinburgh Man #102 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Edinburgh Man #101

Ahem. A particularly rambling podcast tonight. So what’s new, you say, etc, etc. I think my brain is probably still reeling from the fantastic Meursault gig on Saturday night at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh. They open the podcast for the second week in a row with the wonderfully anthemic “Settling” from what is already one of my favourite albums of the year. Also on the show, the new single by Thomas Patrick Maguire, a wonderful track from Spooky Bubble of Alligator Indian from the “New Weird Asheville – Volume II” compilation, and track from the new Zapruder Point EP. 1. Edinburgh Man #100

Was it really just a couple of days ago that I was standing in the sun on the “Home & Away” beach some 10,000 miles away? And now here I am in a rainy (although warm and humid for whatever that’s worth) Edinburgh? Sigh. Anyway, it’s podcast 100! Except it isn’t really. Because (for whatever reason) I decided not to number the “specials” this is really podcast 116. As such, this podcast is only special in terms of the music. All of my chat is, as usual, just on the wrong side of being coherent. Edinburgh Man #100 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Meursault – “Flittin'” (Played courtesy of Song by Toad Records) 2. Edinburgh Man in Sydney

Again, apologies for the lateness of this podcast post. I’ve been way too busy enjoying myself. I’m also running on cellular data only, so let’s hope I don’t hit my limit before clicking on “save”. Today’s podcast is the second of two from Australia. This week we have moved to Sydney, land of sunny beaches and expensive coffees. But still some great music. Eight tracks by bands from the city. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go pack. 1. Edinburgh Man in Melbourne

A podcast! From Melbourne! Apologies for the slowness of getting this recorded and uploaded. Jeg-lag, season-lag, expensive and unreliable Internet connections, and small child logistics. All these and more conspired to delay the show by a few days. But here we are. Don’t expect any insights into the city or local music scene, but do expect some rambling chat. At least all the music is from Melbourne artists, so it’s almost like I’ve made some sort of effort. 1. Edinburgh Man #99

This podcast was a bit of an experiment, at least in the technical sense. I recorded and edited it on an iPhone using a new little microphone. The reason for doing this was basically to see if it would be possible. That and I don’t want to heave the laptop to the other side of the world next week, and I’d quite like to try and do a podcast from Melbourne. Anyway, I thought it prudent to do at least one test beforehand, rather than find out when I got there that it wasn’t going to fly. Obviously this means that the podcast wasn’t live, so you’ve just got me talking to myself, rather than the twitter masses. The other reason for the podcast being prerecorded was because I wanted to go to a gig tonight! It’s the launch party for the debut album by Miaoux Miaoux, with support from Conquering Animal Sound and the Mitchell Museum. This is despite the fact I saw Conquering Animal Sound on Saturday in Avalanche Records… Two gigs in one week? Surely not… Edinburgh Man 99 Edinburgh Man #99 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Edinburgh Man #98

I bit the bullet and bought a Kindle. This is mostly as a result of an impending flight and a desire to keep my carry-on baggage to a minimum. My feelings about digital downloads run hot and cold. I have an affinity for physical media, whether that’s music, video games, book, dvd/blu ray and the shops that sell them. But I also do like the space saving aspect of digital media, and the fact you can get hold of what you want straight away, at any time of the day (except, it would seem, on my PS3, which seems to be stuck in the 1998 when it comes to downloads speeds). Of course the Kindle is pretty much tied to Amazon, which isn’t something that fills me with joy either. Anyway, I put out a request on the old twitter earlier on today for music related recommendations for books to load up the Kindle with before the trip, and I got loads of suggestions back. Of course, the irony is that I’ll probably spend all of the flight trying to amuse a small child, rather than reading any of the great sounding books, but at least my bag will only be bulging with nappies (diapers for those on the other side of the pond). As usual, I digress. Lots of great music on today’s show. As with last week, a few more tracks than normal. We kick off the show with a blistering dirty blues track from Spice Hound Music Co., and we have the new single by The Last Battle – an exclusive play, in fact. You can stream “Hope is Gold” from their Bandcamp page tomorrow, and it will be available to buy on Monday. OR you can hear it on this hear podcast right now! 1. Edinburgh Man #97

Last week’s podcast was a bit of a failure, at least in technical terms. I suspect I had a brain fart that resulted in me muting my microphone WHILE TALKING. Outrageously unprofessional I know. The bit you missed was most likely me gushing about how wonderful the purple vinyl of the Alligator Indian album looks. If you don’t believe me, just take a look yourself. Their last EP was pretty swanky looking too… that’s it in the artwork for tonight’s show. Anyway, hopefully there won’t be a repeat of the technical incompetence this week (I’m writing this before recording the show). Figures crossed. Music-wise, I’ve tried to buck the trend of recent podcasts where I played bands that have featured before and you’re probably familiar with. Assuming I actually stuck to the planned playlist, then only three of the bands have featured on the show before, although one of them was quite some time ago. The other seven artists (yep, it’s a long one) are totally new to me, and hopefully to you too. Edinburgh Man 97 Edinburgh Man #97 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. The podcast is back! Again! After last week’s illness the show returns, with a technical bump. Something went wrong with the audio during tonight’s show. If you were listening live there was a 2 minute period when I was talking to myself. So what’s new you say? I’m sure I said something incredibly insightful and interesting during that time, but since it didn’t record either, we’ll never know. Spooky. Anyway, aside from the single temporal anamoly, there’s loads of great music on the podcast. Mostly from bands that have graced the show before, but what can I say, they’re just too good. Edinburgh Man #95

And we’re back! Apologies for the music repeat show last week. A 24 hour virus invaded the house and podcast duties had to be set aside for parental duties for at least a day. The slightly annoying thing was that after I had that massive cold and sore throat a couple of weeks back, I decided to record an “emergency show”. This is something I did last year with a couple of shows with tracks from K Records and Kill Rock Stars. Those shows were kicking about for ages before I pulled them into service, but this time I’ve used my backup show straight away! Anyway, there’s a bunch of new music on today’s show. Well, newish, because it’s by and large the playlist from last week’s show. As a result, if you keep up to date with other Scottish blogs or podcasts, you’ve probably already heard most of these before. I don’t care. I like them, so I’m playing them. It’s the emergency broadcast system… Something has gone wrong today. Illness or Internet probably. No matter. I had this spare podcast up my sleeve! Imagine being ill on Record Store Day. Outrageous. This can’t happen again. I spent most of the weekend and the start of the week in bed, rather pathetically with just a cold. In my defence, it was a horrible cold. But a cold nonetheless. It did make Record Store Day pretty hard going. I had hoped to do the rounds of the record shops in Edinburgh, taking in in-stores at both Avalanche and Vox Box… In the end I only managed to stumble up to Avalanche, get most of the records I wanted to buy, watch Withered Hand and some of Gordon from Ballboy, and then stumble back home to bed. Next year I need to isolate myself from the world in the run up to Record Store Day… I don’t want to go through all that again. So, it was almost a podcast with no music. Or rather, a podcast with no new music. I obviously didn’t source any tracks while ill. But in the end, as is the way of these things, lots of top new tunes appeared, and you were saved the fate of listening to me playing music that had been on the show before. I wrote the rest of this blog post the morning before the show. It’s almost as if I jinxed it with the opening sentence… Shockingly it all seems to be coming together. Since last weeks podcast Edinburgh Man Jr has slept through the night three times! On top of that, I’ve been to two gigs over the same period… In fact, one of those gigs was the Fence Records “Eye ‘O the Dug” festival in St. Andrews so really that’s like loads of gigs. To celebrate this you get some rambling reviews of both Eye ‘O the Dug, which took places insides some incredibly old (and incredibly cold) buildings at St. Andrews University, and (The) Lemonheads, who I saw last night at the Edinburgh Picture House. There are a couple of tracks from bands that played in St. Andrews, some music related to this Saturday’s Record Store Day events in Edinburgh, and more great music besides.
