Pick. Scan. Edit. Return. Pick. Scan. Edit. Return… I’ve been cataloguing my vinyl for the last week. I downloaded a cool iPhone app called MyStuff2 (I’m not sure if the 2 is important or not… I wonder what the first one was like…). The reason for this organisation is because I’ve been known to accidently buy albums that I already have. In theory it should be easy, but this sort of thing never really is. About a third of the albums seem to pre-date barcodes, and the ones that do have them always come back with weird capitalisation, or “[VINYL]” appended to the end of the names. Most of the time is spent editing the information that the barcode scanning is supposed to make automatic. Add to that the odd record label (Song, by Toad, I’m looking at you) whose barcodes refuse to scan. Damn this technology. Anyway, I’ve just finished it! And in the process discovered I’ve lost my original pressing of “Paul’s Boutique” by The Beastie Boys (£20 on eBay) but gained an extra copy of “Definitely Maybe” by Oasis (up to £65 on eBay). So at least we’re in the black. Unfortunately… I’ve still got the 7-inch singles to tackle… Edinburgh Man 91 Edinburgh Man #91 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Over and over again. I may have said during last week’s show that I already had sorted out the playlist for tonight’s show. Normally I choose the playlist a day or two before the podcast and listen to it a couple of times on my iPhone to see if the tracks go well together (see – there is some method to the madness). This time, however, as a result of selecting the tracks ages ago, I’ve listened to it over and over again. The Veronica Falls track especially. I’m addicted to it. I mean, it’s great… but I think there may be something wrong with me… Anyway, the upshot is that I ended up deciding I didn’t really like about half the tracks on the show, and set about seeking out some more and changing it all about a bit. There is perhaps a lesson there with regards to overthinking this funny little show… Edinburgh Man 90 Edinburgh Man #90 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Getting ready for this week’s podcast was a bit of a trial. I had to tidy away the Sega Saturn from the desk and get the microphone set up instead… Regular listeners to the show may be aware of my retro gaming vice. For some reason I always wanted to own a Saturn, despite the fact at the time I had the technically superior and much more game-laden PlayStation. Anyway, after many years of waiting I splashed out £30 this week for a Saturn and a whole bunch of games. I’ve been playing “Mass Destruction” continually since then. If your current “jam” could be a game, mine would be that. Anyway, after last week’s podcast of mostly artists who are favourites of the show, tonight’s podcast entirely contains artists who have never featured before. In fact, with the exception of one of the artists who I knew by name if not by music, all of them are new to me in the last 7 days. AND… we start off with some techno. Obviously. So. I got up early this morning… well, actually it was an enforced rise of sorts. I sorted out the playlist for tonight’s show and wrote this blog post. Unfortunately, on the show itself, I sort of went off the rails fairly early on and didn’t feel that I couldn’t mention it. About halfway through I decided to pour myself a large drink, and we just about managed to get through to the end, but at what cost? Anyway, music-wise there’s podcast favourites Schwervon! and The Spook School, a great new track from the Retribution Gospel Choir (if you aren’t familiar with them, it’s not what you think), and a track from the new Cancel the Astronauts single. Schwervon!, The Spook School and Cancel the Astronauts all have upcoming gigs this weekend. Schwervon! are playing tonight at the Big Snow Buffalo Lodge in Brooklyn. It’s their send off show before they move from NYC to Kansas! The Spook School are playing tomorrow night at Teviot in Edinburgh as part of the Fresh Air Festival 2012. They’re on really late… so I probably won’t make that. Finally Cancel The Astronauts are playing at Sneaky Pete’s, also in Edinburgh, on Saturday night along with Bad Books and Fuzzystar. I am planning on making it to that one. Honest. Edinburgh Man 88 Edinburgh Man #88 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. New Bleeders – “Ox Blood” (Played courtesy of Kinky Star Records / IODAPromonet) 2. A special live podcast! I know what you’re saying, the podcast is always live. Well, this time all the tracks are live tracks too. I mean, not live, live. But pre-recorded live. You get the idea. There have been a few live gigs of late that I haven’t been along to, not least the Jeff Magnum curated All Tomorrow’s Parties last week that sounded fantastic. All this has got me yearning for some live music, so I thought I’d do something a bit different tonight. Some live tracks, from some of top bands. Oops. It seems that I have hidden my “Soundcloud” label on my Gmail since the start of the year. This wouldn’t be particularly problematic if it wasn’t for the fact that people regularly send me loads of tracks though it. Whoops. So today’s show features some of those tracks, including a great track from a cassette release on Livingston’s Soft Power Recordings, Edinburgh’s Urvanovic and Glasgow’s Will Hanson. There’s also a recent track from one of my favourite bands from the 1990s – Luscious Jackson who have reformed and are self-recording a new album funded through Pledge Music, and my current jam – a fantastic new track from the upcoming EP by The Son(s) on Olive Grove Records. Payback, perhaps? The nighttime routine dictated by Edinburgh Man Jr has taken a rather random turn this last week. Possibly due to the fact Edinrbugh Man Sr had the audacity to go to a gig on Saturday night. However, as luck would have it, we managed to get a lie in this morning, until about 6.30am. Luxury. So fingers crossed the baby brain won’t effect tonight’s show as much as it did last week. About that gig then. It was PAWS / Edinburgh School for the Deaf / Sebastian Dangerfield and Jamie from Broken Records at Edinburgh College of Art. The second of two gigs curated by Stu Lewis of The Tidal Wave of Indifference blog. You know, he who complained about the chiptune a couple of weeks ago. Sadly, I didn’t get to the gig until just before PAWS came on. But it was a belter. Ending with the smashing of a guitar. Very punk… although somewhat offset by the rather plaintive tweets later that night. As ever, I digress. Tonight’s show starts of with a bit of PAWS, to satisfy any demands for three and a half minutes of punk pop. Elsewhere, however, most of the tracks are nearer 5 or 6 minutes in length! Meaning the show is probably going to be a bit longer that normal. Here’s hoping I manage to stay awake… Edinburgh Man 85 Edinburgh Man #85 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. It’s that all important podcast number eighty four! Actually, if you include all those “special” episodes that didn’t have a number, I have a feeling that this is podcast 100. What to do for such a milestone? Well, how about seven new tracks from Edinburgh and around the world, an oldie thrown in for good measure, and a load of chit-chat. That sounds about right. On today’s show: new music from Edinburgh’s PET, a top new single from London and Brighton based Shrag, and two tracks from a compilation of “weird” new music from Asheville, NC. More music besides, including that “oldie” which, it has to be said, is actually only from 2009. Edinburgh Man 84 Edinburgh Man #84 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Firstly, an apology. I seem to have been playing a few tracks by the same bands for the last few weeks, and tonight’s show is no exception. Actually, it’s only half an apology, because they are all great tracks. So if I haven’t already persuaded you to seek out Randolph’s Leap, Schwervon! and Former Babies, I’m going to have one more shot tonight. I have two other reasons for playing Randolph’s Leap on the podcast. Last night I went to the Edinburgh launch gig for their new cassette. A pretty low key acoustic affair with Adam from the band playing an acoustic guitar in Matthew from Song, by Toad’s flat. It was, however, a wonderful gig. With top quality support from David from Kid Canaveral, also doing an acoustic take on both old and new Kid Canaveral tunes. The second reason is that the Glasgow launch for the cassette is on Saturday night at the Captain’s Rest. So this is a plug, if Saturday hasn’t passed yet, get yourself along where they’ll have the full eight piece band. In the tiny Captain’s Rest! Should be fun. The second podcast of the year, and I’m starting to find my feet a little bit. Due to the pressures of time, however, we’re still flying without any notes. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. In a shocking turn of events, I’ve even been to a couple of gigs since the last show! Both free in-stores at Avalanche Records, but gigs nonetheless. Rachel Sermanni on Monday and The Twilight Sad yesterday. Edinburgh Man Jr managed to get along to both too, although the Twilight Sad one was a bit too busy for him to get inside. I also suspect those Twilight Sad chaps are responsible for the low amount of Twitter banter during the show; they were playing at the Grand Ole Opry in Glasgow tonight. I’ll let them off though, since their new album is rather splendid. Anyway, tonight’s show is a tad eclectic, albeit with a fair amount of jangly indie-pop. If you’re looking for the sort of synth-pop and electronica from last week, you’re going to be disappointed. Edinburgh Man 82 Edinburgh Man #82 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. It seems like ages since I did one of these…. I mean, it is ages. A whole month of podcast paternity leave. Last year I took January off from podcasting and returned refreshed. I’m not sure if the same can be said for this year. I’ve returned… let’s just leave it at that. I’m writing this blog entry before recording the show. Hopefully Edinburgh Man Junior (who now has a name) will have kept quiet for the duration – I do have the baby monitor right next to me – and we’ll have had some uninterrupted music and chat. On today’s show, I needed to wake myself up to get going, so some Australian chiptune happy-hardcore was required. Obviously. There’s a couple of new tracks from Edinburgh bands – podcast favourites My Tiny Robots, and 80’s synth influenced The Machine Room. Bands who also happen to share a drummer. Oh the inscentual nature of the music scene in this city. I love it. 1. Victory Road – “Success is a Sexy Mess” (Played courtesy of Victory Road / Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. Best of 2011 - Part 2
It’s the last podcast of the year, time to crack open the Champagne and listen to the second part of the best tracks of 2011, as played on the show, and as voted by listeners of the podcast. Loads of great music on the show today. I would say that, of course, but I really do mean it. The plan always was to take my top 50 and your top 50 and merge them together, and that’s how it went for last weeks show, and the first 10 or so tracks of todays show. However, by-and-large our top 15 tracks were the same, and I found it very difficult to choose between them, so the top 15 here is basically your top 15. Although, you’ll be pleased to know, I can’t really find fault with it. Let’s see 2011 out in style, with some of the best tracks from the year. Starters1. It’s Christmas! And on the podcast that can only mean one thing – it’s the best tracks of the year, as played on the show, and as voted by the listeners… and me. In fact, this year both my list and the results of the votes were quite similar. Apart from one or two tracks. Anyway, the two lists got merged in a spreadsheet blender, and out popped a top 50. I wish I could blame the technical faux pas on the live version of today’s podcast on the fact the batteries for my mouse ran out partway through, but the fact is that I muted the music and failed to unmute my microphone way before the mouse ran out of power. In fact, running out of power is a bit of a theme on today’s show. It’s earlier than normal! Recorded in the middle of the afternoon. There was a power cut in central Edinburgh today, and the office building in which we work was pretty much shutdown. As a result, it was an impromptu half day that I probably should have spent Christmas shopping, but instead I thought I’d do an afternoon podcast. A special treat for those still stuck in work! On the show, I play some tracks that aren’t in the top 30 (or maybe 50) tracks of 2011 – the poll for which closed at 8am this morning on the website. I thought I’d take the opportunity to play tracks and bands that I liked, that maybe (at least judging by the votes) no-one else did! 1. Bah. It’s too cold for this sort of thing. Why did I think it was a good idea to move the podcasting station near the window? Winter has hit, it’s windy as all hell out there, and I’m a bit chilly as I do podcast 79. Hopefully you can’t hear “Hurricane Bawbag” outside, or my teeth chattering. It’s also that time of year when new releases often seem to dry up, so I have been listening to some older stuff for the last seven days… hence a few oldies on the show today. But thankfully Edinburgh based record labels Song by Toad and Gerry Loves Records keep the new releases coming. First up is a track from the new split cassette on Gerry Loves Records. It’s a track from Field Mouse, who I have to admit I hadn’t heard before seeing him at the Gerry Loves Xmas gig on Friday night. His set was great and the cassette release, along with the Japanese War Effort, is a thing of beauty. Also on the show is a track from the Lil Daggers self titled album. It’s the last release of 2011 from Song by Toad, and it’s a belter too. Oh – and assuming that you’re listening before the 15th of December. You can still vote for your favourite tracks of 2011 as played on the show. Just follow the link at the top of the page. 1. Field Mouse – “Toy” (Played courtesy of Gerry Loves Records)2. Oh dear, oh dear. On tonight’s live podcast I manage to accidentally insult a very nice twittering listener, and the resulting tweets almost throw me off my stride (such that it is). Thank goodness for the healthy portions of dream pop on the show, which keep me calm and relaxed. I also need a bit of relaxing – the last few weeks have been a whirlwind of flat pack furniture construction and more yet more confusion. I feel just like that puzzled IKEA man on the little instruction leaflets. Anyway, on today’s show, that brilliant track by The Spook School that I promised you on last week’s podcast. There are two tracks (yes two!) from a great fun album by Los Readymade, and a brilliant track from Tyler Jack and Just Just. Lots more, as ever. And lots of dubious chat, as ever. 1. We’re back on Thursday nights! A bit later than normal, but here nonetheless. I did think that this show might end up being quite a bit shorter than normal, because most of the tracks are only a couple of minutes long… But there you go. On today’s show – loads of great music! Well, at least I think it’s all great. Two brilliant tracks from recent releases by San Diego’s Bleeding Gold Records. They may be based in sunny California but the two tracks are both by artists from the UK. There’s also a great new song from one of my favourite Edinburgh bands – The Spook School, and a new single from Darren Hayman. Lots more too, but you’ll have to listen (or read below) to find out what. Contains violence and swearing from the start! 1. David Warren – “The Knife” (Played courtesy of Bleeding Gold Records)2. HEHFU – “Winter Sun And Summer Snow” (Played courtesy of Bleeding Gold Records)3. The Spook School – “Devil Of Mine” (Played courtesy of The Spook School / Released under a Creative Commons licence.)4. Sea Lions – “Grown Up” (Played courtesy of IODAPromonet / Slumberland Records)5. Darren Hayman – “I Taught You How To Dance” (Played courtesy of IODAPromonet / Fortuna POP!)6. Wounded Knee – “Tomlinson’s Rant” (Played courtesy of Gerry Loves Records)7. Shambles Miller – “For the Would-be Woody Guthrie” (Played courtesy of Shambles Miller)8. Cinema Red And Blue – “Walkin’ To The Cemetery” (Played courtesy of IODAPromotnet / Fortuna POP!)

It’s the last podcast on a Tuesday night… and in keeping with the wonderful planning and renowned consistency of the podcast, it’s on a Wednesday. After this week night classes are over, and Thursday nights become free again, so I’m moving the podcast back. To be honest, my body and mind never really got a hang of doing this on Tuesday nights. I just spent most of the week wondering what day it was. On today’s show, two new singles from Edinburgh bands. Firstly My Tiny Robots are back with a great single “Guild of Defiants”, and one of my favourite local bands PET have a new single “Middle Child Syndrome”. There’s also a track from the new album by Edinburgh’s The Stormy Seas. It’s not all new local music though, in fact, the show starts with a brilliant track from Allo Darlin’s debut album that was released in the middle of last year. It’s a top song though. So why not? 1. Allo Darlin’ – “Dreaming” (Played courtesy of Fortuna Pop / IODAPromonet)2. My Tiny Robots – “Guild of Defiants” (Played courtesy of Woodthief Records / My Tiny Robots)3. PET – “Middle Child Syndrome” (Played courtesy of PET)4. The Stormy Seas – “The Tall Ships” (Played courtesy of The Stormy Seas)5. Dad Rocks! – “Funemployment” (Played courtesy of Dad Rocks! / Released under a Creative Commons licence)6. Wounded Knee – “Love is Teasin'” (Played courtesy of Gerry Loves Records)7. Ana Threat – “Rock N Roll Jungle Girl” (Played courtesy of Ana Threat / Trash Rock Productions / Released under a Creative Commons licence)8. Mark Wynn – “World Can Wait” (Played courtesy of Mark Wynn)

The best laid plans and all that. Since moving to Tuesday nights, the podcast has rarely started at the same time. Tonight I sat down to record the podcast at the slightly later time of 9.15pm and we’re still sticking to the 8 track, 45 minute long show. In fact, at the start of the day I had about twenty tracks in the playlist for this podcast, and it’s taken me most of the day to get it down to eight. Took some doing too. On the positive side, I’ve already got a great looking playlist for next week. The show starts with a track from Portland trio Blouse off their debut self-titled album on Captured Tracks. There’s a track from one-time Moldy Peach Toby Goodshank’s brilliant new album “Truth Jump Fall”. Finally, if you’re in London this Friday then get yourself along to The Wilmington Arms for a gig with Kid Canaveral, The Understudies and The Give It Ups. To get you in mood I play a great track from The Give It Ups from their “The Give It Ups Sing…” EP. 1. Blouse – “Videotapes” 2. Toby Goodshank – “Prelude to Fire” 3. Horsecollar – “The Thrill of Never Being Satisfied” 4. The Give It Ups – “Make & Do” 5. Hollows – “Hot Sand” 6. Bottle of Evil – “The Boatman” 7. Rob St. John – “Sargasso Sea” 8. Alligator Indian – “Yesterday’s Parties”

I went to one gig in the last week. Which doesn’t seem too bad on account of the fact I’m playing my gig-going by ear at the moment, however it feels like there have been decent gigs on pretty much every night for the last two weeks, and the next week is shaping up to to be more of the same. The gig was Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard at The Third Door here in Edinburgh. But I was also excited because Seth Faergolzia from Dufus was playing a solo support set. A couple of years ago I was in NYC and picked up a flyer (picture below) in Cake Shop for the last ever Dufus gig. Unfortunately it happened to be the same day we were flying back home. So while we were sitting in Newark airport, back in the city we were missing would looked like a great gig, with special guests Adam Green and Regina Spektor, and even the New York Fire Department. A slight change on today’s show. There are more tracks than normal. Until the end of the year I’m going to try for 8 track shows. I’m going to give Mixcloud another go, and for music shows they have (for some mysterious reason) a minimum of 8 tracks. This is despite the fact the podcast never got anything more than 1% listens from Mixcloud… but maybe I didn’t tried hard enough. Enough of that, let’s talk music. We start off with a track from Austria’s Ana Threat, which blew me away when I listened to it a few days ago, not least because of a large madness factor. You’ll see what I mean when you listen to it. There’s also a brilliant track from Trips and Falls on Edinburgh’s Song, by Toad Records. It actually came out in September, but for some reason I thought I’d already played the track on the show, so when I realised I hadn’t I just had to play it. There’s loads more music too… Like I say, 8 tracks in total! Crazy. 1. Ana Threat – “I Can Only Give You Everything”2. Big Troubles – “Sad Girls”3. Laura K – “Saboteur”4. Dad Rocks – “Weapons”5. Tiger Waves – “It Could Never Stop”6. Sam Collins – “Devil in the Lions Den”7. NO FUN – “First Time”8. Trips and Falls – “This is All Going to End Badly”
Edinburgh Man #73
I’m a little bit confused at the start of this week’s show. This is because my voice seems to be coming back to me through my headphones delayed by a quarter of second. Freaky. Today’s show has a bit of the old John Peel in it. 7 years ago today John died in Peru, so I’ve flavoured the show with a few tracks that have associations with the old Peel show. Although to be honest, mostly he was about playing new music, so there’s a load of that too. 1. The Hardy Boys – “Jane”2. Jeff Lewis – “The East River”3. Conveyor – “Rosacea (Carol No. 2)”4. Washboard Sam – “Mama Don’t Allow It”5. Darren Hayman – “The Ship’s Piano”6. The Moth & The Mirror – “Closing Doors”
Edinburgh Man #72
Disaster. There is only one red bush tea bag left. In fact, by the end of the show there were none. Somehow I managed to struggle on through the show, despite the voice getting a bit croaky at times. I’m also a bit more confused than normal. This is partly because the flat is in general disarray at the moment. We’re one sofa down and waiting for a replacement, bathroom flooring is lying around the hall waiting to be laid, and there are IKEA flat-pack boxes loitering in various the rooms threatening to be built. However, there is some great music on today’s show. So that’s okay then. We start with a track from the brilliant album by Glasgow’s The Moth & The Mirror, two tracks from bands from Asheville, NC (I know!), and a great track from an album by Uniform Motion that you can buy as a name your price ON VINYL! Crazy. During the podcast I make a strange reference to animal noises (specifically those of a hamster and maybe an owl) and I threaten to explain the reference, but I never do. On twitter today I had a conversation with @eagleowlattack and @jonniecommon about playing the last track on the show. @eagleowlattack suggested monetary compensation that I eventually got down to a beer. @jonniecommon suggested I interrupt the middle of the track with the noise of a squawking eagle owl. Finally @zaphodjrham (who appears to be a twittering hamster – you heard that right) suggested augmenting the experience with a hamster noise. I’m not entirely sure what such a noise would be, but in the end I forgot all about it on the show. My brain and my mouth do have a tendency to disengage from each other sometimes. 1. The Moth & The Mirror – “Fire”2. Alligator Indian – “The New E”3. Tiny Mountains – “Bold As Lions”4. Uniform Motion – “Our Hearts Have Been Misplaced In A Secret Location”5. Ian Humberstone – “House on the Hill”6. eagleowl – “Sorry I Spoke”
Edinburgh Man #71
Technology conspired against me for today’s live podcast. It was supposed to be at 8pm, but there were network issues which meant the broadcasting software didn’t play ball. After an hour or so of fiddling it was sorted, so today’s podcast is a 10pm “late and live” special. Don’t expect any swearing an nudity, I’m afraid. Just rambling and sleepiness. That’s what you get. Anyway, on today’s show a track from a great EP by Alligator Indian, a track from the upcoming album by Gospel Music on Kill Rock Stars, and a track from Edinburgh band The Stormy Seas. Lots more too. It’s a bit of a mixture this week… although to be honest, isn’t it always? And the Hisptamatic is a blurry lie. The network cable was the first contender for the technical issues, but it turned out to be far more ethereal. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Alligator Indian, Kill Rock Stars, The Story Seas, Mark Wynn, Soledad Vélez and kidsounds. Tracks 1, 5, and 6 are released under Creative Commons Licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Alligator Indian – “Honey Eye Bee Leave Ewe”2. Gospel Music – “This Town Doesn’t Have Enough Bars For Both Of Us”3. The Stormy Seas – “Morbid Desires”4. Mark Wynn – “Ramblin’ Jack”5. Soledad Vélez – “Animals”6. kidsounds – “between the universe”

The podcast has moved! From a Thursday night to a Tuesday night. If you listen to the podcast via the wonders of iTunes, or on the website, then this will make very little difference. However if you listen to the podcast live… then you’ve missed it. Never mind. On the inaugural Tuesday night show we start with some rock with a capital W from Colorado based The Amends, there’s a great new track by Brooklyn’s Conveyor, and a track from the new album by Glasgow’s The Hardy Boys. Today’s Hisptamatic… well… I forgot to mention it in the show, but on Friday night I saw Adam Holmes and the Embers at the One Below in Edinburgh. It was a great night, and I also met @brucerisk from twitter, which was nice! Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of The Amends, Conveyor, The Hardy Boys, The Toothaches and Sub Pop Records. Tracks 1, 2, and 4 are released under Creative Commons Licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. The Amends – “Depraved”2. Conveyor – “Ellery (Carol No. 4)”3. The Hardy Boys – “I Want You”4. The Toothaches – “Don’t Be Lonely”5. Dum Dum Girls – “Coming Down”

Many apologies. I’ve had a bit of a persistant cough for the last week, so I’m a bit croaky on the podcast tonight. A bit less chat than normal, and some more music. I think I only coughed into the microphone once. So watch out for that if you’re listening on headphones! On today’s show, it’s got a bit of a C86 indie-pop-type-theme with two brilliant tracks on Slumberland Records – “Hazel” by Weekend, and “Bad Feeling” by Veronica Falls. There’s also a great track from the new Trips and Falls album on Song by Toad Records, and we finish off with a track from The Douglas Firs who played a top gig on Saturday night organised by Stu Lewis from the The Tidal Wave of Indifference. And… if you squint… you might be able to make out The Douglas Firs is this week’s Hispstamatic. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Zoey Van Goey, IODAPromonet / Slumberland Records, Song by Toad, IODAPromonet / Armellodie Records. 1. Zoey Van Goey – “You Told The Drunks I Knew Karate (GRNR Remix)” (download track free from Bandcamp)2. The Bleed Whites – “Eat the Spurs” (download album for ‘name your price’ from Bandcamp)3. Veronica Falls – “Bad Feeling” (download track free and buy from AmazonMP3)4. Weekend – “Hazel” (download track free and get more info)5. After a week on holiday the podcast returns with a vengeance. Sort of. Last week I was in New York, mostly just chilling out and buying some vinyl. I somehow managed to squeeze a whole load of albums into my case for the journey home, and thankfully they all survived unscathed. Anyway, as I’m still in a New York mood… or perhaps more importantly on a New York timezone, I thought I’d make an New York playlist for this week’s show. Every track is by a band (or artist) from the city. Including two tracks, yep that’s two tracks, about Coney Island. Track 1 is played courtesy of JoFranna, Track 5 is played courtesy of Schwervon! / Olive Juice Music. Tracks 2-7 are released under Creative Commons Licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. JoFranna – “Coney Island” (buy EP from Olive Juice Music)2. Like, Mountains – “Coney Island” (buy EP from Bandcamp)3. Everything is back to normal with a truly ramshackle podcast! The craziness of the Edinburgh Festival is behind us for another year, and the podcast returns to it’s normal shambolic self. On the plus side, I checked the stats the other day, and saw that listeners in the US are still just outweighing those in the UK, so it looks like I didn’t alienate too many people with a month worth of festival-centric broadcasts. So there’s that! On today’s show there are new tracks ahoy! We start with a track from the forthcoming album by Dum Dum Girls on Sub Pop Records, there’s a track from the new single by Cancel the Astronauts, and a track from the forthcoming LP by Pocketbooks on Odd Box Records. Lots more music too. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Sub Pop Records, Cancel the Astronauts, Yusuf Azak, and Pocketbooks. Tracks 3, 5 and 6 are released under Creative Commons Licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Dum Dum Girls – “Bedroom Eyes” (download track free and buy from Sub Pop Records after 27th September) 2. Cancel the Astronauts – “Seven Vices” (buy EP from Bandcamp) 3. Uniform Motion – “The Victory Of Buckets And Doors” (download album free from Bandcamp) 4. Yusuf Azak – “Soft Vision” (download EP free from Bandcamp after October the 8th) 5. Pocketbooks – “Promises, Promises” (download track free from Bandcamp and buy album from Odd Box Records) 6. szdl – “glass” (download EP free from Bandcamp)
Edinburgh Man - Retreat! Festival Special
It’s a Retreat! Festival special episode of the podcast! Last weekend, at Pilrig St. Paul’s at the boundary of Leith and Edinburgh, Tracer Trails presented a two day festival to celebrate the music scene in Edinburgh and beyond. Lots of great bands played over the weekend, and Bart and Emily were kind enough to let me speak to some of the bands over the two days. So, on the show we have chats with Emily from Tracer Trails and Bart from eagleowl and The Gentle Invasion, Rob St. John, Johnny Lynch aka The Pictish Trail, Skelton Bob and Two Wings. There’s also an exclusive first play of the new single by Rob St. John, and an exclusive version of a track by Two Wings! Contain your excitement, please. Finally, if you’re in Glasgow this upcoming weekend, you really should go along to MUSIC IS THE MUSIC LANGUAGE, a two day festival organised by Tracer Trails and Cry Parrot. After all, it’s only £10! Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of The Pineapple Chunks, eagleowl, Rob St. John, The Pictish Trail, Skeleton Bob, IODAPromonet / Armellodie Records, Two Wings, Song by Toad Records. Edinburgh Man and Gordon at the Fringe 2011 – Episode 4
With Kurt Braunohler It’s the last weekend of the Edinburgh Fringe 2011. Thankfully. I’m not sure how much longer I could have kept going. This week I’ve been to shows on all but one of the days. Gordon is back, and impressively he has been to some shows too! Outrageous. It’s basically a round up of what we’ve seen, we ramble about our favourite bits of the festival, play some music, and talk about things that you could go and see in the last few days. There’s also a fun chat with comedian Kurt Braunohler, who is performing at the brilliant variety show Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen with his comedy partner Kristen Schaal. You only have a few hours left to go and see it, because it’s their last show tonight. But it’d be worth it. Finally this week’s Hipstamatic was from Withered Hand’s glorious “homecoming” gig at the Queen’s Hall on Thursday night. Hearing a massive crowd of people singing along to Religious Songs and No Cigarettes was incredible. Warning: May contain some swears. I forget to say this in the show. But then, I forget to say a lot of things in the show. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Supermarionation, Boompa Records and Olive Grove Records. Tracks 2, 3 and 4 are released under Creative Commons Licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Woodpigeon – “Invisible Friend” (buy LP from Bandcamp)6. The Moth and the Mirror – “Lights in the Sky” (download free from Bandcamp)
Edinburgh Man at the Fringe 2011 - Episode 3
With Josie Long and Shambles Miller Another podcast from the Edinburgh Fringe! We’re more than halfway through, but the fringe is really taking it’s toll. So much so that we’re one presenter down! Gordon has done a runner. The podcast and his Fringe schedule collided today, so you’ve just got me instead. Actually, that’s not true. You’ve got me, and Shambles Miller, and Josie Long! Two interviews on the podcast today. I chat to Josie Long about her brilliantly funny and politically charged show “The Future Is Another Place” which is on at the Pleasance Dome until Sunday the 28th (not the 22nd). It’s not all politics, we also talk swimming, and nerd out a little bit while chatting about Scottish indie music. Shambles Miller came over to Edinburgh last week to play a secret gig in the Blind Poet bar. We had a great chat afterwards, but beforehand, in torrential rain, Shambles played an acoustic track while sheltering in an alleyway off the Grassmarket. It’s the first ever exclusive recording for the show! And it’s re-assuringly lo-fi, with sounds of wind, rain and traffic in the background! You can see Shambles playing live during the Fringe in a real venue too. He’s supporting Jack Savoretti at Cabaret Voltaire as part of the Edge Festival. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet / Song by Toad, Sub Pop, Cancel the Astronauts, IODAPromonet / Fortuna POP!, Shambles Miller and IODAPromonet / Armellodie Records. The Scottish Enlightenment – “St. Germain is Thick Tonight” (download track free and buy album from iTunes)
Edinburgh Man and Gordon at the Fringe 2011 - Episode 2
With David MacGregor from Kid Canaveral One week into the fringe and the festival is starting to hit its stride. Gordon, of course, still hasn’t been to any shows. But no matter, I went to five in one day yesterday, and I’m feeling the strain a bit today. We’ve moved outside, lured by the promise of some sun that didn’t really materialise. The Edinburgh wind however did… as demonstrated by the buffeting on the microphone. Apologies for that. Hopefully you can still hear our ramblings. Anyway, there are reviews today, especially for some of the free fringe shows. And also a few tips for getting into the rather busy free fringe shows. Don’t say we don’t provide a public service. Finally, with massive thanks to Avalanche Records, we talk to David from Kid Canaveral. They’ve had a hectic year so far including playing SXSW along with King Creosote, and signing to Fence Records to re-release their brilliant debut album SHOUTING at Wildlife. But more importantly, in terms of the Fringe at least, they are playing at The Liquid Rooms tomorrow night along with Over The Wall and Admiral Fallow. Get your tickets here! Today’s Hipstamatic is a bit of a cheat! It’s from the Kid Canaveral in-store at Avalanche Records a few weeks back, but it seems like an appropriate image for this show. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Plastic Animals, Kid Canaveral, Olive Grove Records and The Last Battle. Tracks 2, and 3 are released under Creative Commons Licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Plastic Animals – “It Fell Apart” (buy EP from Bandcamp)2. 50FOOTWAVE – “A Rushing” (download EP free from cashmusic.org)3. Conveyor – “Sun Ray” (buy EP from Bandcamp)4. Kid Canaveral – “You Only Went Out To Get Drunk Last Night” (buy from Kid Canaveral or Bandcamp)5. Randolph’s Leap – “Deep Blue Sea” (buy album from Bandcamp)6. The Last Battle – “Viv Nicholson” (by EP from Bandcamp)
Edinburgh Man and Gordon at the Fringe 2011 - Episode 1
It’s the Edinburgh Festival Fringe all over again! Already! It really doesn’t seem like 12 months ago that we stood in the Pleasance Courtyard, waiting in the queue for comedy show after comedy show, trying to keep out of the rain. It also feels like this first weekend of the Fringe has been the wettest start for some time. We had hoped, just liked last year, to record the podcast sitting on a picnic table in the Pleasance, supping on some beer, and enjoying the sun. Instead, we were sheltering from the rain in the bar of the echoey Pleasance Dome. We also haven’t even been to see any shows yet! So this is very much a preview edition. Guess what, we talk nonsense, and play some music. Nothing really has changed in the last 12 months. This week’s fringe Hipstamatic is Dan Willson from Withered Hand sporting this season’s ‘double denim‘ look at the afternoon’s in-store performance at Avalanche Records. As usual, it was a blinder. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of The Spook School, PET, My Tiny Robots, IODAPromonet / Absolute Kosher Records, Song by Toad. Tracks 1, 5 and 6 are released under Creative Commons Licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. The last proper podcast for some time… The city is about to get crazy. Purple cows are being inflated, dusty cellars are being converted into overheating stand-up comedy venues, and the population of the city is swelling in size. The Edinburgh Festival (and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe) is upon us. Hopefully, just like last year, there’ll be some special episodes of the podcast recorded over the Fringe. But, just like last year, it’s already turning into a hectic looking month. Fingers crossed some special shows can be sorted out. Check out the @edinburgh_man twitter feed throughout the month for more info. I’m a tad worn out this week too. Which is no way to start the festival. Last weekend we went for a city break down in London. I’m not sure why I thought this would be relaxing. It never is. On the plus side, much vinyl was purchased, included a track featured in tonights show. Would you believe I’ve got to go down to London again tomorrow… and on a train at 5.40am too! Something tells me this is going to be a tiring month. This week’s Hipstamatic is from that trip down to London. A 60’s style image for a 60’s style building. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet / Galaxia Records, Kill Rock Stars, IODAPromonet / Slumberland Records, Gerry Loves Records. A bit more laid back than the craziness of last week’s podcast, hopefully. Although to be honest, part of me is still buzzing from this weekend’s great free in-store gig at Avalanche Records by Kid Canaveral (see this week’s Hipstamatic for details) to support the re-release of their brilliant album on Fence records (and its first release on vinyl). By some way of explanation, last week I did the foolish thing of having a clock in front of me while recording the podcast. This was because I had an appointment to keep after the show, but in the end it put me on edge and exacerbated my already fragile condition. The result was what @ArtIdiot on twitter described as “golden gonzo chat“… Well, I’m not sure about the goldeness of it, but at least one person enjoyed the ramblings. On today’s show. I try to make it more about the music, and decide not to worry about the running time. From a rocking start with Edinburgh’s Supermarionation, through to shoegaze from Australia’s COLOURS at the end, it’s a rock filled, lo-fi fuelled show. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Supermarionation, Tiger & Panda / Polite Records, Sea Birds, Gerry Loves Records, Song by Toad, Kill Rock Stars and BEKO DSL. It’s a podcast that almost didn’t happen. For some outragous reason… oh wait, I remember it’s because I’m busy at work at the moment… I’ve been getting up early the last few days. The good thing is that this has resulted in lots of work getting done. The bad thing is that it’s resulted in a blazing headache which I’ve had all day. Anyway, I’m not one to let feeling rubbish get in the way of listening to and playing some music, so let’s try and blast that headache away with paracetamol (that’s what we call Tylenol in the UK) and some great music. On today’s show… new tracks by podcast favourites Shambles Miller and The Last Battle. The Last Battle track is from their new EP which came out last week. The Shambles track is brand new… hot off the Soundcloud presses. And yes, it may be about the end of the world, but it’s a great fun track. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Cats and Cats and Cats / Function Records, Kill Rock Stars, Shambles Miller, The Last Battle, Barsuk Records. Track 1 is released under a Creative Commons Licence. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. In a rather unlikely turn of events summer seems to have arrived in Edinburgh this week. If you’re not from around these parts, what this means is that it’s sunny… slightly warmer than normal… and no-one is wearing a jacket. Not one to waste this, I wandered up Calton Hill at lunchtime. It’s a strange place, with a weird selection of buildings, including part of a replica of the Parthenon. Seemingly they ran out of money after only building a tiny part of it some time in the 1800’s. Today it was surrounded by American high-school students and office workers eating their lunches. For some reason the summery feeling has put me in the mood for noisy indie-pop, so we start off the podcast with a couple of great shouty tracks from The Lovely Eggs and The Give It Ups. The “Eggs” track is from their 2009 album If You Were Fruit, released in the US on Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records in the US, and Cherryade Records in the UK. The “Ups” track is taken from one of the 7 inch singles in the rather brilliant looking Odd Box Records single club. … let’s indie-pop! Hold on to your iPod ear-buds, it’s an hour long special of the podcast! It’s actually only special in that it’s an hour long, otherwise it’s pretty much the same as normal. Basically my list of music that I wanted to play is getting bigger and bigger, and I had some real trouble trying to whittle it down into a half our show today, so I just decided not to bother. Lots of music, and maybe a bit more chat, but that’s only to fill up the gaps between songs. Honest. Two days early! It’s an extra-special, croaky-voiced, Tuesday-night podcast! This week I seem to have got an action packed social calendar which goes gig, gig, wedding, gig. It all means that I’m out for the rest of the week, so I’m doing this podcast early. Normally I’d just record it, and set it to appear at the normal time, but Thursday night is the launch party for new The Last Battle EP, so I wanted to do a little plug for that, and if I left it for Thursday then there’d be little point! So, from the new E.P. by The Last Battle, I play the brilliant Viv Nicholson. There’s also a track from the new album by King Post Kitsch, and a track from Something Beginning with L (as featured in this week’s Hipstamatic) who played an instore gig on the Saturday before last in Avalanche Records. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of The Great American Novel, The Last Battle, IODAPromonet / Armellodie Records and Song by Toad. Edinburgh Man - Kill Rock Stars Special
Tonight I’m out! I’m not quite sure how I’ve managed to go so long without being out on a Thursday night. Anyway, the lure of a free bar tempted me away from the podcast, so we have a pre-recorded one instead. And it’s a special episode of the podcast devoted to music from the record label Kill Rock Stars. Founded in 1991 in Olympia Washington by Slim Moon, it’s surely not an overstatement to say that KRS is one of the most influential labels in the alternative music scene. From the early releases of seminal north west punk bands, through the riot grrrl bands of the mid-90’s to the art-rock releases from the short-lived 5RC spin-off label, there’s just so much great music to choose from. This week’s show takes us from 1994 to 2007 on a journey through the KRS catelogue, including tracks from Heavens to Betsy, The Gossip, and Deerhoof and loads more. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Kill Rock Stars. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. I know, I know… I said I wasn’t going to do a live podcast this week. But I couldn’t help it. I had planned to go down to the after-show party for today’s Leith Late, but for some reason my body seems to be rejecting gig going at the moment. This is because it has had an enforced holiday, and is getting used to playing video games and watching boxed sets. Well, it better snap out of it for tomorrow’s Edinburgh School for the Deaf album launch, that’s for sure. On today’s show, we start with a track from Cuddly Shark – they’re playing at 2pm this coming Saturday as part of Avalanche Records Armellodie day of gigs. There’s also a great titled track from the debut Pensioner album on Olive Grove Records, and lots more music and shambolic chat. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, Olive Grove Records, Quiet Lights, Plastic Animals, Adam Holmes and the Embers and This Old Machine. Tracks 3, 4 and 6 are released under Creative Commons Licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Technically this was the most ambitious podcast yet. And it didn’t work. The plan was to have a phone call chat with Brian Pokora from The Last Battle about the Wee Jaunt festival at the weekend. But it didn’t work. Instead, you get me in a very flustered mood moaning about technology and a broken bike. Sorry. If only I could have hooked up my old rotary phone to my laptop. Anyway, music-wise there’s the brilliant new single from Herman Dune, which is from their new album that came out earlier this week. Do a search on YouTube for the wonderful video featuring Jon Hamm from Mad Men. There’s also a new track from 50FOOTWAVE, and a track from the upcoming self-released album by Edinburgh’s art-rockers The Pineapple Chunks. Ah, rotary phones. Back when times were simpler… Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, Burning Building Recording, PET and The Pineapple Chunks. If you were unfortunate enough to tune in last week you’ll have heard me moaning about a broken dishwasher. Don’t worry – it’s been replaced, so there’ll be no moaning this week. However the cost of a new dishwasher seems to have put a dent in this months live music and vinyl purchasing plans, so there’ll be plenty of moans about that instead. On today’s podcast we started off in a totally self-indulgent manner with a live recording of “No Children” by The Mountain Goats. I was at a fantastic gig by The Mountain Goats through in Glasgow at the weekend, and I’ve still got their songs flying around my head. There’s also a track by the Second Hand Marching Band featuring Benni Hemm Hemm. Benni has been resident in Edinburgh for the last few years but now he’s returning to his native Iceland. His farewell gig was the same night as the Mountain Goats gig, so as some sort of consolation I fancied playing this track. It’s been very difficult, let me tell you, but I’ve managed to drag myself away from L.A. Noire (yeah – what is the score with that extra ‘E’), and washing dishes, for half an hour to make another podcast. Yep. I did it live again, but it’s probably really annoying going on about that all the time. Basically doing it live helps me with my preparation, and keeps me to a specific time for recording the show. So until I completely mess it up, I think I’ll carry on doing live podcasts. Someone on twitter today said that last week’s show was very rawky. Never one to stick to a trend I decided to play some chilled out electropop at the start of the show. Just to confuse. Don’t worry though, there’ll be your daily allowance of shoegaze, acoustic indie folk, and a bit of rock too. On today’s show, lots of great music, including a track from Edinburgh-based Zed Penguin who I caught (a bit of) live this week. There’s also another track from that Conveyor EP – it comes out next week on vinyl, so I’m playing this to remind both myself, and you, to buy a copy. Another ramshackle live podcast! Or rather it was. If you’re reading this now then it’s all over and the dust has settled. Actually, apart from the live part it was quite relaxing, with a couple of slowcore tracks making up the playlist. It’s been a busy old week or so gig-wise recently, even if I did miss Mercury Rev this evening because I didn’t get my tickets in time. On Tuesday I embarked on the always fun trip through to Glasgow on the train, this time to see Low at the Classic Grand. The gig was brilliant, although Scotrail took their time getting there. In the end I arrived during the last song of the support act, and only about 10 minutes before Low came on stage. The gig was brilliant though. And I couldn’t not play a Low track on the show. There’s also some great shoegazey noise from Procession, a track from Edinburgh’s Birdhead and lots of other stuff too. This week’s Hipstamatic is from a gig a week or so ago. One I didn’t mention in last week’s “more music, less chat” show. It’s Johnny “Huddersfield” Helm coming out from behind the drums to sing at The Wave Pictures. Edinburgh Man - K Records Special
I had lots of music for today’s podcast. Loads and loads actually. So much so that I got a bit stuck trying whittle it down. I was also going to do another live one, but in the end time, and the fact I was feeling a bit under the weather, got the better of me. So instead, I made an entirely different podcast with lots of music and very little chat. I promise I’ll sort out my playlists and get back to a proper (maybe even live) one next week, but in the meantime I hope you enjoy a K Records special. A podcast devoted to one of the most important, influential and truly independent record labels – Olympia’s K Records. Founded by Candice Pedersen and Calvin Johnson (most well-known for his band Beat Happening). Staunchly anti-corporate and supportive of DIY punk music, their motto is “exploding the teenage underground into passionate revolt against the corporate ogre since 1982”. There are just too many great artists from K Records to play in a single show – so this is just a small selection. If you want to know more about K Records, seek out the documentary “The Shield Around the K: The Story of K Records“… and pick up a copy for me while you’re at it! Edinburgh Man #55
I just recorded this podcast about 30 minutes ago. And like a crazy person I recorded it live… and actually broadcasted it live too! And people actually listened! What I’m trying to say is that it was even more shambolic than normal. As seems to happen when you’re off work for a while, after a few days your body eventually realises that it’s time to relax and all manner of viruses and lurgies take over. So on last Saturday, after doing very little for just over a week, I came down with the cold. I’ve been pretty croaky for a few days, so had to record this week’s show at the last minute so I’d actually be able to speak! Anyway. This weekend I braved illness and went along to the (free) Grassmarket festival in the centre of Edinburgh. There were loads of great local bands, including the subject of this week’s Hipstamatic – Edinburgh School for the Deaf. Despite having a drunk Mark E. Smith lookalike dancing in front of them for much of their set (he’s the one on the right, by the way), they played a blinder. Nice and loud… so much so that a woman from the council appeared and made them turn off the PA with one more track still to play. Outragous. There’s a track from Edinburgh School for the Deaf’s new single on the show today, also music from Magnetic Island, Randolph’s Leap, and more. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Olive Grove Records, IODAPromonet / Slumberland Records, Bubblegum Records and Mike Nisbet. I’m on holiday this week. Because some uninteresting people are getting married, there’s an extra public holiday this week in the UK. Add to that the holidays for Easter and May Day, and you’d be forgiven for thinking that we spend all our time lazying around on our arses around here. Anyway, rather than go into work for a three day week this week, I decided to take an extra few days off. The result is that this is a chilled out, recorded during a sunny evening, relaxed podcast! There’s fairly eclectic mix of music too… some post-punk, twee-indie-folk, and shoegaze… and that’s just for starters. This week’s Hipstamatic… it seems like there’s been in-store gigs at Avalanche Records in Edinburgh every week for ages. On Saturday there, we were treated to pretty much a full set by Aberfeldy. If it wasn’t for the torrential rain on the bike ride back home afterwards it would have been a perfect Saturday! Last weekend was Record Store Day, and I seemed to spends lots of money on a whole stack of vinyl, and saw some great live music. It all started at some ridiculously early time of the morning, and when I got down to Avalanche Records in Edinburgh I was still the ninth person in the queue! The main thing was, I got all the records I wanted to get – including a great re-pressing of Big Star’s III. However, due to some bad planning I was a bit late getting back there to see Frightened Rabbit perform in store. This week’s Hipstamatic is my view when they were playing… from out in the street! Anyway, on today’s show there’s one track from a Record Store Day release – the Panda Bear album, and a track from 1991 by Unwound, a band featured on a great Kill Rock Stars compilation that had a 20th anniversary re-pressing. Lot’s of other great music, including Nan & The One Night Stands, and a track from the new Crystal Stilts album. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, Kill Rock Stars and Olive Juice Music. Tracks 4 and 6 are released under a Creative Commons licence. Madness. I’ve left recording the podcast to the last possible minute. So it’s about as “live” as you can get with this sort of thing. It was also a bit of a nightmare to record. I ended up recording it under a little fort, which was quite uncomfortable, so apologies if this comes across on the show. Back when I started doing the podcast I always recorded it on the Thursday night. But back then I wasn’t so fussed with doing a proper blog post, and getting the sound levels all right. So, for the last while I’ve been recording the show on a Wednesday or even a Tuesday night. But, for what ever reason I’ve been a bit slack this week and it’s all come down to the wire… anyway… let’s go! On today’s show there’s a track by Edinburgh band Sebastian Dangerfield. It’s from their new EP which has a launch party at Edinburgh College of Art on the 22nd of this month. There’s also a great fun track from the Thao and Mirah album that comes out towards the end of the month on Kill Rock Stars, and a brilliant track from Conquering Animal Sound‘s Kammerspiel album. Lots more music besides, and a bit of the old chat. Oh, and this weeks Hipstamatic is The Spook School. Who played a blinding debut gig on Sunday night at Henry’s Cellar Bar. If you haven’t already, check out the previous two episodes of the podcast – they each have a track from The Spook School. Your new favourite band. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Kill Rock Stars, Sebastian Dangerfield, Conquering Animal Sound, EardrumsPop and Dressed Like Wolves. Last week’s podcast had the most likes on Facebook so far! A whopping 16! Thankfully many more people listen to the show than “like” it, but still – I was impressed. Perhaps this is because the show was a chilled out indie folkie sort of show? Never one to stick to a formula, I’ve decided to mix it up a bit this week, with a bit more musical variety. There are two great tracks from albums that come out at the start of next week, first up the Vivian Girls, and a bit later into the podcast a track from the new Low album “C’Mon”. There’s also a brilliant track by Tri-Lambs, a band that features Toby Goodshank as well Crystal Madrilejos and Angela Carlucci from the Babyskins. If you’re not familiar with the Babyskins you might recognise Crystal and Angela’s voices from a couple of Herman Dune albums. There were also at least two great gigs in Edinburgh in the past week. Including Zoe Van Goey with support from Aidan Moffat at Electric Circus. I tried to take a Hipstamatic photo, but I guess I had the kaleidoscope lens on. Weird. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Polyvinyl Records, Tri-Lambs, Sub Pop, Song by Toad, and The Spook School. Tracks 4, 5, 6 and 7 are released under Creative Commons licences.
