Tonight the podcast may jump the shark. On last week’s show, for very little reason, I played some great tracks that have been featured on the podcast over the last almost 5 years. I was going to do something similar today because I quite enjoyed making it up as I went along, and entertaining suggestions from listeners on Twitter. However I accidentally sorted the playlist consisting of everything I’ve played by duration… So I thought, I wonder if I can make a podcast by playing every track in order of length from shortest to longest until I get to 45ish minutes. Since there are so many under 60 seconds this could end up being a mad panic. A mad panic with lots of Grindcore and Screamo. I realise this is something I probably should have saved for that upcoming 5th anniversary, but who cares. Let’s do it. Edinburgh Man #185 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. After last week’s show in which I played a track by Schwervon someone tweeted at me to say (admitting they hadn’t listened for a while) that they really enjoyed it and were keen hear more… A quick glance at my “previous podcasts” playlist in iTunes suggest they’re one of the most played artists on the show! Anyway, this got me thinking. I’ve played a lot of things on the show over the last 5is years. And I’m sure many people just dip in and out, so I thought I should do a show where I stumbled through that “previous podcasts” playlist and played some tracks that I (and maybe you) had missed or forgotten about. It’s a bit of an experiment – in that the podcast playlist is normally set in stone before I do the show. Doing this requires a technical change which I’m sure will go horribly wrong. Halloween is here, so that means processed cakes are now available only in orange – such as this mildly disgusting “fiendish fancy”. Luckily some vanilla rooibos tea with almond milk will wash the taste away… is there anything more middle class than that? Anyway, in celebration of halloween the show starts with “Swamp Thing” by Schwervon! from their brilliant 2003 album Poseur. They played a great gig on Monday night at the Wee Red Bar along with the Wave Pictures. Also featured is a track from the new album by The Son(s) which is out this week on vinyl on Olive Grove Records. Lots more, plus rambling chat and vibrating phones. Look at that view! That’s the view from my new office window. Pretty nice… I mean, aside from the tops of the buildings. You can see Calton Hill and everything. I am, however, pretty wiped tonight. Mainly because the last few days have involved carrying lots of boxes and computer equipment upstairs from our old ground floor office to the new one somewhere up in the roof. Anyway, the view is nice. Listeners to last week’s podcast will be pleased to hear that Edinburgh Man Junior has made a full recovery from his recent illness, however Edinburgh Man Senior is really missing those 1-2 hour naps that came with being unwell. Right, let’s get down to it. It’s a bit of a power-pop-punk-pop-indie-rock fueled podcast tonight. Excellent. Edinburgh Man #182 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Regular listeners will remember that my MacBook recently died. Well in the last week my iPhone has started to head in a similar way. Damn you Apple. Despite my best coaxing it’s proving impossible to copy music onto it. So that’s my new music player right there. Retro listening. I can, however, fit about three time as much music on it, so it’s not all bad. I’ve been dealing with a sick child today, so if I’m sounding a bit worn out physically and emotionally on this podcast, that’s why. Being a parent when kids are ill is no fun at all. Incredibility I went to a gig this week. Alec from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah played at Matthew from Song, by Toad’s house on Friday night. And it was a great gig. That’s the photo I accidentally took on the bus through town on the way back home. Soaking wet and fortified by Icelandic white beer. No, I don’t know either. On today’s podcast most of the tracks seem to be a few years old, including THAT song by Beat Happening, a track from the second CYHSY album, and tracks from I Believe in Sunshine and The Also-Bands. Those last two being bands I know (or knew) nothing about. There’s also some rambling chat. And a promise that the podcast will return to a regularly scheduled live slot at 8pm on Thursday nights as of next week! Edinburgh Man #180 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Cassette Store Day! What’s that all about then? I’m not entirely sure but I seem to have finished the day having bought more cassettes that I had done in the previous year. It’s a special outside broadcast podcast as the Edinburgh Man family make the trek from the south west of Edinburgh to Stockbridge in the north to purchase some crazy limited cassettes from Vox Box Records. Experimental recording techniques, lo-fi audio, and “found sounds” ahoy in this show. Featuring guest appearances by Darren from Vox Box and, who knows, maybe even Edinburgh Man Junior. A friend of mine used this phrase on his Facebook page recently and I’m going to shamelessly appropriate it – I’ve reached a feeling of Zen with regards to Thursday’s Scottish independence referendum. I’ve got friends on both sides of the debate, as I’m sure most of us in Scotland have, and most of them seem to have the best interests of the country at heart. The most incredible thing is to have witnessed a country galvanised by political debate. Even if just a fraction of that endures after Thursday it’ll be a hell of a legacy. Podcast-wise, everything is thrown into disarray this week after my MacBook died, so today’s playlist is basically what I was able to transfer onto my iPad without the “power” of iTunes. Thankfully no U2 album is included. Oh hello. It’s another slightly randomly scheduled podcast. I write this sitting in the garden as Edinburgh Man Junior runs around the vegetable beds. Don’t worry though, he’s not in this indie-pop biased edition of the show – I recorded it over lunchtime this afternoon as I was working from home. Well I was supposed to be working from home, but after finishing it I decided I needed some caffeine and spent the rest of the day in Artisan Roast. Anyway, I said I wouldn’t talk politics this week and I just went and did just that. Many apologies. Don’t worry, it will all be over by this time next week. What’s with the milk bottles I hear you cry. I’ve been making milk. From nuts! It’s crazy, I know. I never knew such a thing was even possible, and now I’m addicted to it. I guess it’s the same part of me that likes making beer or wine or bread or any number of things that are easier and cheaper to get from a shop. Cashew is my current favourite. That and almond. Don’t try sunflower though. That’s bogging. Anyway, on today’s show I talk politics. Apologies. If you read my blog post last week about how I’m voting ‘yes’ in the upcoming Scottish independence referendum you probably thought this was coming. If the blog post was well thought out, then this is the opposite. It’s rambling nonsense. Please don’t base your vote on anything that I say – research this yourself. If you are in Scotland then it’s probably the single most important vote you’ll ever cast – make sure you are absolutely right in your mind not just about the way you are voting, but that you are doing so for the right reasons. Not out of fear for the alternative, but out of hope for the way forward. Edinburgh Man #176 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. The Last Battle – “You & Me” (Played courtesy of The Last Battle) 2. So Edinburgh Man Junior is doing this thing at the moment where he won’t stay in his bed if he’s awake. As you can imagine this is playing havoc with the live podcasting schedule. The early evening routine basically involves me reading Julia Donaldson books in a whispery voice until he falls asleep. By which time my voice is wrecked and I need to fortify my throat with red bush tea and copious amounts of water before I can record a podcast. Anyway, this is the result. Chat today includes the normal rambling nonsense about slow toddlers on bikes without pedals, riding on hot sweaty trams, and the acoustic properties of large railway stations. Music-wise. Och it’s brilliant. Just listen. Edinburgh Man #175 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Sorrows – “Don’t Bring Me Down” (Played courtesy of Sorrows, Released under a Creative Commons licence) 2. As with many of these live podcasts, this one almost didn’t happen. Not that it probably would have mattered – no-one tweeted at me, so I don’t know if it was even working. Anyway Edinburgh Man Junior got his first bike today. Or rather it’s almost a bike. It has wheels a seat and handle bars, but not much else. But getting him off it and into bed this evening was a bit of a challenge. Luckily he stayed asleep for the whole show (although he actually woke up screaming about 2 minutes after it finished – good timing). Anyway, on this podcast great new music from Toby Goodshank, Radiator Hospital and Siobhan Wilson, amongst others. A brilliant track from Schwervon which is now eight years old. Yikes. And a track from new Lost Map band Insect Heroes – which I introduce in the most woeful manner possible. Ah well, nothing’s changed. Edinburgh Man #174 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. I’m still under the weather this week, but like the trouper that I am I’ve done gone and made one of these podcast shows for you, albeit with a bit less chat than normal. I couldn’t resist putting that picture up there. I know that it’s two weeks in a row a train themed image has been used for the podcast artwork, but last weekend we took Edinburgh Man Junior to the steam railway at Bo’ness. I was rather sceptical but it was actually a great day out – even if the steam train was broken. Instead there was this great old British Rail diesel train which took me back to my formative years when we had a nationalised rail service in the UK. Ah, the 70’s. In music news, Edinburgh’s Meursault will soon be no more. Sob. Hence we start today’s show not with rambling by your good host, but their wonderful “One Day This’ll All Be Fields”. The podcast is back on home turf this week after a couple of weeks in Toronto. And guess what? It’s not a live one. For a number of reasons. Firstly I’m a wee bit ill, in some pain, and doped up on antibiotics which seem to be affecting my stomach in undesirable ways. You didn’t need to know that, did you? Also Edinburgh Man Junior is undergoing some “sleep training” which sounds far more regimented that the pandemonium that actually ensues come bedtime. There’s a technological issue – basically wires have become misplaced. And then there’s laziness. I’ll leave it up to you to decide the primary cause. Anyway, because of general uncomfortableness it really is a “less chat that normal” podcast. Honest. That guy from a few weeks back who asked if I normally talked that much on the show will be well happy. Edinburgh Man #172 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. The second of two podcasts recorded in Toronto, featuring an all Torontonian playlist, and more rambling chat from the palatial waterfront Airbnb condo that is the Edinburgh Man family home for the last two weeks. Edinburgh Man Junior is improving, and we even managed to do touristy things for the last few days. We went up the CN Tower and Edinburgh Man Junior was fascinated by the glass floor. Something that most of the adult visitors seemed to be a bit freaked out about. Or maybe they were just freaked about by his Chickenpox scabs. Don’t worry – we did get the okay from a Doctor that he was no longer contagious. Edinburgh Man #171 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Greetings from sunny Toronto! It’s actually been really sunny. Despite the fact that nearly every day the weather has said that it’s going to rain. Perhaps these Ontarians are a pessimistic bunch? If only this really mattered – most of the time has been spent indoors looking after a sick Edinburgh Man Junior. In terms of this week’s music it’s all from Toronto bands or artists, and it’s a rather eclectic mix too. All recorded in a palatial waterfront condo (actually, and Airbnb apartment – but it’s pretty nice). Edinburgh Man #170 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. I should have recorded this podcast on a tram shouldn’t I? I missed a trick there. Unfortunately the thought didn’t occur to me until halfway through the podcast. Never mind. There were some grumblings from various sources about last week’s (early morning) podcast that seemed to suggest it contained a bit too much rambling and uninteresting chat. So this week I try desperately not to talk as much… and to play more music. I don’t think it really worked out that way though. I’m sure I probably talked as much as normal. I think we may just have to face the fact that it’s a physical impossibility for me not to ramble at length about nothing in particular. I’m so very sorry. Last night I realised that tonight is the launch gig for the Bastard Mountain album. Oh, and tomorrow night it’s Moon Hop with Withered Hand and Meursault amongst others. So basically I could either wait until the weekend or do the podcast earlier. And when I say early I mean early. It’s a morning podcast this week on Edinburgh Man, recorded at 9.30am. Of course, thanks to Edinburgh Man Junior I was awake at 4.50am. So this is like lunchtime for me. That said, I’m going to need to coffee to kick start this one. A couple of years ago I used to be addicted to this little puzzle. And when I say addicted I mean I used to play it every day for about 12 months. For some time it’s been hidden away behind a pile of junk, but unfortunately today I found it. I’m a fan of Rubik’s Cubes, but they have a method to their madness. This thing, as far as I can tell, is pretty much pot luck. Anyway, you’ll be glad to know I’ve managed to put it down for 45 minutes to record this week’s exciting podcast. Inspired by a discussion with fellow passengers on the train back from Monday night’s Neutral Milk Hotel gig in Glasgow, today’s playlist is inspired by the wonderful and eclectic radio station WMFU. It’s the first podcast for a couple of weeks and I’m in a foul mood. We don’t really get to the bottom of this during the podcast – it’s either because of the ongoing rubbish internet at Edinburgh Man Towers… or maybe because I was swizzed out of free cake at Brew Lab… or perhaps it’s just the continued existence of the UKIP. Who knows? Anyway, no matter. There no sensible justification for it because there’s lots of great new music to listen to. Bastard Mountain for one – that “Swam Like Sharks” track is incredible. FURROW too – their new single on Bleeding Gold records is pretty majestic. Some fantastic epic shoegaze from Edinburgh’s Wozniak as well. Yeah, all good. Stop being grumpy you dick. So the good news is that I’ve dumped the ISP that gave me so much grief when I was doing last week’s live podcast. The bad news is that it doesn’t change over until next week… and I’m not even in the country next Thursday so that won’t be a live one then either. Also – an apology. Last week on the show I spent quite a bit of time talking about bodily fluids. Specifically with references to the toilet training of Edinburgh Man Junior. Judging by the reaction I got from at least one person I perhaps went into too much graphic detail. I didn’t realise this – I’ve become desensitised to such things over the last couple of years. Anyway, if you did “get the boke” as a result of my chat then I sincerely apologise. And no, I’m not explaining “boke” if you don’t already know what it means. That would probably just make things worse. Edinburgh Man #165 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Cat Smell – “Cheap Date” (Played courtesy of Cat Smell) 2. So for the last 5 days Edinburgh Man Junior has been toilet training. I promise I shall really try not to talk to much about bodily functions. Honest. Anyway, I tell you this in case the normally high-quality audio of the podcast is punctuated with the sound of a overworked washing machine on spin cycle. Other exciting things that happened this week include the annual wallet emptying event that is Record Store Day. I know it comes in for a lot of (often fair) criticism, but I enjoy it. Despite the cost. There are a lot of pointless releases, for sure. But there are some quirky things in there that you only really get at this time of year. And a few interesting re-pressings too. I also attempted to take Edinburgh Man Junior into a Record Store with obvious (at least with hindsight) results. Edinburgh Man #164 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. I’m totally utterly jet-lagged. I’ve just got back from a two day work trip to the US. Basically I had almost enough time to adjust to the heat and the timezone before getting back home. And since then I’ve been largely cold, broken and passing out rather than falling asleep. Anyway, as a result last night’s podcast didn’t happen at the normally scheduled time. So instead we have a daytime special podcast. I figured I’d be more likely to stay awake if I recorded it at a time where there was sun streaming through the windows. On today’s show I talk about Record Store Day, play some tracks from bands who are playing at RSD events in Edinburgh, and generally ramble. Always with the ramble. Another podcast, another series of technical cock-ups. This week on the podcast I thought I’d attempt to do a live show, however the new Internet at Edinburgh Man towers is of a lower quality than it used to be, so it was a non-advertised live show. I’m not even sure if it worked for the full 45 minutes, or if anyone listened this week. I really should figure out how I can find out that information. Anyway, no-one talked to me on the old twitter, which is probably just as well. Music-wise it’s a great eclectic mix this time. Garage-Rock from Barcelona in the form of a new single from The Saurs on Mama Vynila Records, there’s the welcome return of chiptune to the podcast with the title track from Oregon’s astroskeleton’s fantastic “you are not alone”, and a wonderful new track from the new EP by Aberfeldy’s Star Wheel Press. That moody photo there is tonight’s atmospheric podcasting station. It feels strange to be starting the podcast when it’s (almost) still light outside. Hooray for daylight saving time. I must apologies yet again for 1) a croaky throat and coughing which resulted in more music and less chat, and 2) it not being a live podcast again. Another pre-recorded podcast tonight on account of Edinburgh Man Junior current avant-garde approach to sleeping. In fact it’s the second of two attempts at recording today’s show. First of all I thought it would be a great idea to record the podcast walking down the canal tow-path. This was without checking the weather, which would have shown me that there were twenty mile an hour winds at the time. Unsurprisingly the resulting recording didn’t sound too good and I aborted the whole thing after 20 minutes. The second take fared a little better. Recorded late in the afternoon before Edinburgh Man Junior was collected from nursery, all we had to contend with was the noise of next door neighbours having a bathroom fitted, the other next door neighbours small child “cleaning the stair” and vacuum cleaning going on in our flat. So nothing much then. Edinburgh Man #160 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. King Post Kitsch – “The Days Keep Coming” (Played courtesy of New Pleasure Recordings) 2. Would you believe it? Edinburgh Man Junior has gone and brought MORE lurgie into the house. MORE! This shocking turn of events has resulted in yet enough week where your struggling host is fighting back the urge to cough up all manner of nastiness over the microphone. As a result, it’s a pre-recorded podcast tonight. I knew my voice wouldn’t be able to hold out for a continuous recording. That said, there’s only a couple of edits to allow me to compose myself, but it’s just as well it wasn’t live. There was also the underlying threat that Edinburgh Man Junior may have interrupted any live show. You see he’s figured out how to get out of that bed of his. So tonight we’re trying to persuade him to stay under the covers by bribing him with stickers. Kids do seem to love stickers. Edinburgh Man #159 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. With hindsight I probably should have taken a picture of that chocolate cheesecake before I polished it off. But to be honest my brain wasn’t planning that far ahead. On that plate there used to be a bazillion calorie slice of cheesecake which I ate while playing Withered Hand’s “California” on the podcast. One of these things (or possibly both) made me come over all wobbly. Anyway, today’s podcast features some great tracks from recent or upcoming albums. There’s that fantastic Withered Hand track and a great track from KEEL HER – both albums that were released this week. A track from the recent Yellow Ostrich album which came out in February, and a brilliant track from the upcoming album by Edinburgh’s The Last Battle. In fact, it’s no wonder I felt wobbly after listening to all that. Edinburgh Man #158 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. The podcast returns from a short and unexpected break! Many apologies for the lack of show over the last two weeks. Edinburgh Man Junior brought some hideous flu-like lurgie back from nursery. He was ill for about 4 days then bounced back. I, however, spent the best part of the next week in bed, curled up in a foetal position, moaning. Even after the flu eventually passed I was left with an annoying and persistent cough. There was no way I would have been able to do the podcast last week without hacking my way through it – which wouldn’t have been much fun to listen to. Anyway, here’s hoping it has subsided enough for me to get through the next 45 minutes to an hour. On today’s show a Low cover from Edinburgh’s Meursault, the second single from the recent album by Dunedin’s Trick Mammoth, and a track from a new EP by Brooklyn’s No Kill. Loads more besides, but hopefully not much coughing. I have a bag of cough sweets at my side just in case. Edinburgh Man #157 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. If you listened to the podcast last week you will have heard me recounting recent the issues we’ve had at Edinburgh Man Towers with our telephone line being crossed with the line from one of our neighbours. Well, last week we thought it was all fixed, but since then it’s turned out that it’s as broken as ever. So much so that the Internet is incredibly slow, and even more incredibly unreliable. Hence a pre-recorded podcast this week. And possibly pre-recorded for quite some time – apparently the problem with the line is buried somewhere between our flat and the telephone exchange more than a mile away. Wonderful. Contain your excitement. The podcast has returned. I’m sure every year a large proportion of the listeners think (or more likely hope) the podcast won’t come back after the annual January hiatus. No such luck, I’m afraid. Here it is, and it’s as rambling as ever. Prepare to be regaled with talk of telephony woes, migraines, broken headphones, and pooing in the pool. Sorry. Music-wise a new version of a great track by Meursault, shouty rock from Waylon Thorton and Despite Settlement Mechanism, and a fantastic new track from Las Lanas. Oh, and next Friday (Valentine’s night) the Edinburgh Man Podcast Roadshow will be guest DJ and the wonderful Unpop club at the Wee Red Bar in Edinburgh. 11pm until 3am. Yikes. Best of 2013 Part 2
Boxing Day 2013. I have a cold. Not just a regular cold. But one of those really annoying colds that you only ever seem to get at the Christmas holidays. Trouper that I am I’ve stocked up on drugs, menthol oils, lozenges, cups of tea and Toblerone. I reckon we should be able to make it through the two hour epic that is the BEST OF 2013 PART 2 no problem. It’s a pretty exciting list too. Eight of the top ten tracks are from Scottish bands, and while the top two were way out in front, at the end they were separated only by a single voter. The closest the poll has ever been. Anyway, get yourself a glass of mulled wine, put your feet up in front of the fire, and enjoy the 25 top tracks of 2013 as chosen by the listeners of the Edinburgh Man Podcast. It’s the last “proper” podcast of the year! And by that I mean that next week is the first of two shows featuring the results of the always exciting end of year poll. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. This week I’m beginning to feel a bit festive, helped in part by the fact Edinburgh’s ballboy have just released a great Christmas EP, and in part because Edinburgh Man Junior keeps wandering up to our Christmas tree shouting “Baubles”, “Baubles”. Anyway, because of this there is a slightly festive feel to this week’s port and mince pie fuelled show, including a track from the aformentioned ballboy EP, and a seasonal track from Toby Goodshank’s brilliant Minas Dias LP that was released early this year. Taking a break from the never-ending washing of beer bottles to record tonight’s podcast. I knew there was a reason I stopped making beer. Bottles, bottles and more bottles. It seemed like such I good idea when I started making this American-style “holiday” beer for Christmas. It’s not the boiling of sticky liquids, or syphoning beer from bucket to bucket that’s a pain. But washing 40 pint bottles, many of which have been languishing (unrinsed) in the shed for a number of years. Yuck. Anyway, on today’s podcast a track from the brilliant new single by Edinburgh’s Book Group – out this week on Gerry Loves Records. Tuesday was Low, tonight it’s Euros Childs, and Friday it MAY be Shellac… If I have any energy left. So because of all this giggage (which to be honest would have been par for the course back when this podcast first started) I thought I’d do a ‘live music’ podcast. It also may have a tiny amount to do with the fact that I didn’t have any podcast preparation time as a result of the aforementioned gigs. Anyway, all the tracks on tonights show can be downloaded for free from the Live Music Archive. Not just the tracks. The whole gigs from which they come. Exciting. 1. Yet another exciting and professional pre-recorded podcast. With tonight’s guest microphone stand: Michael Barrier’s “Hollywood Cartoons: American Animation in Its Golden Age”. After last week’s rather rambling live podcast, I’ve decided to go back to making notes before doing the show. Notes! In any event the notes are somewhat secondary, and instead we end up with meandering stories about vomiting children. It’s also a non-live live podcast. I’m trying out some new tech and despite the fact I’m out working tonight, there’s a possibility that it may have been broadcast ‘live’. I wonder if anyone listened… and I wonder if anyone thought I was ignoring them on twitter… Edinburgh Man #151 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Ramble, ramble, ramble. I’m so sorry. I think I probably need to start doing a bit more preparation for these podcasts. What can I say? Many apologies. In other news you’ll be pleased to know we’re still eating the candy we stole from the neighbourhood kids last week on Halloween. The massive pumpkin still hasn’t been carved (it’ll soup by the weekend). In fact he’s now been joined by a little friend. Awww. Music-wise, it’s a pretty eclectic mix. Grindcore, funk-pop, folktronica and indie-pop. All crammed into 47-and-a-half mind bogglingly rambling minutes. Edinburgh Man #150 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. A proper bedroom podcast for you tonight. It’s Halloween, and we really were going to get into the spirit. Honest. We bought a pumpkin, and bags of sweeties for the neighbourhood guisers (that’s what we call ‘trick or treaters’ in these parts), and everything. But then we realised that the doorbell ringing would wake up Edinburgh Man Junior… so tonight the front of the flat is in darkness, as we hide in the back recording podcasts and eating tiny Mars bars. All of which means that the podcast is properly recorded in a bedroom. I even had to tidy it to make enough space for recording the show! So if nothing else, that’s one chore ticked off the list. It’s very special Friday night podcast! Well, perhaps not that special. Apologies for anyone who missed their fix of the podcast yesterday. On Thursday night I went through to Glasgow to see Swearin’ and Waxahatchee. Obviously if I had planned it properly I would have pre-recorded the podcast in advance, but naturally that didn’t happen. I also drove through to the gig last night in the car. What a mistake that was. Never again. We got to the venue only about 10 minutes before Swearin’ came on after taking about 40 minutes to travel the last 2 miles. If that wasn’t bad enough the entire motorway was closed on the way back and it took even longer to get out of Glasgow! Like I say, never again. Anyway, enough about traffic, let’s play some music. Apologies to any live devotees, it’s yet another pre-recorded podcast. Interestingly, this one is recorded cross-legged on the floor in the living room. Well, actually the first half was me kneeling on the floor until I realised that I’d managed to lose most of the feeling in my legs. Enough of that rambling, perhaps a bit of garage rock vibe going on with this week’s podcast? We start off with the lo-fi punk stylings of Middlesbrough’s Year of Birds, there’s a new(ish) single from Brooklyn’s Starlight Girls, and we end with an 8 minute shoegaze anthem (yes you heard that right) from Edinburgh’s Kid Canaveral. Lots more in between. Mostly bad chat. Oh, and next week’s show will also be pre-recorded. That Waxahatchee and that Swearin’ are playing through in the West Coast so there’ll be an Edinburgh Man road trip going on. Edinburgh Man #147 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Tonight! Just a quick time-out from the nail biting anticipation of finding out which missing episodes of Doctor Who have been found to record a podcast. Actually – I was just sitting on the sofa about ten minutes beforehand thinking “I know there was something else I was going to do tonight. Oh yeah, the live podcast!”. So on this week’s show your erstwhile podcaster is rather flustered as we ramble through some new music and you have to suffer the lame chat of a 1960’s BBC Science Fiction TV fan. A poptastic pre-recorded show from Edinburgh Man towers this week with special guests Nye and Adam Todd from Edinburgh’s finest purveyors of shambling indie-pop The Spook School! We had some fun chat for just under an hour and listened to some top tunes. Both tracks from the Spook’s most recent single are featured, including “I’ll Be Honest” which is also on their new album “Dress Up” – out on FortunaPOP! this coming Monday. Also on the show are tracks from No Ditching, Just Handshakes and Finnmark! Plus Plastic Animals and Martha – both of who play the “Dress Up” launch party on Friday the 11th at Henry’s Cellar Bar. There’s also a track from Edinburgh’s Thank You So Nice who will be playing at the Unpop 4th birthday party alongside The Spook School the following Friday at The Wee Red Bar with C86 heroes The Flatmates! Anyway, let’s get on with the show. We had a great time recording this, fingers crossed it’s at least partially acceptable in terms of listening to it. For the first time in ages I’m actually going out to a gig tonight! I know! The launch gig for RM Hubbert’s new album, featuring a spoken word set by Aidan Moffat – should be a top night out. Anyway, as a result you have a pre-recorded podcast this week. It also seems to be a particular eclectic mix of music. Instrumental banjo, 80’s inspired electro-pop, country, and a track from the always unclassifiable Alligator Indian. As if that wasn’t enough I seem particularly confused for the majority of this week’s show – all alone without the crutch of the twittersphere to fall back on. Next week’s podcast will be another pre-recorded show. Apologies to any live devotees. It will also feature special guests Nye and Adam Todd of The Spook School. Hooray! The podcast returns after a brief (one week) hiatus. Apologies – last week I was in a bit of a funk so there was no show. Many many apologies for this. It doesn’t happen very often (does it?). I should really record some spare shows to put out in the event of illness, technical issues, or general laziness. Anyway on today’s show… some live recordings from Mogwai and Kimya Dawson. In fact, I go a wee bit self indulgent and play two live tracks from the same Mogwai gig. I know – but it’s Mogwai. Also on the show brilliant new music from Asthmaboy, Uniform Motion and Little Big Bangs. And our “vinyl finale” (sorry) is Felon’s Song from By Toutatis. Refreshment-wise this podcast is fuelled by Clipper Tea, Waitrose Fig Rolls, and Anchor Steam Beer. Free samples always accepted. Edinburgh Man #143 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Sea salt and cracked black pepper pretzels. Cheap gin and cheap tonic. Surely the two required ingredients for a top podcast? On today’s show I tried really hard not to ramble very much, but things didn’t turn out quite like I planned. Some great music though including the title track of the brilliant debut album from By Toutatis, a new track from Elizabeth Morris, and a fantastic tune from No Ditching who, if Bandcamp are to be believed, describe their music as “radge pop”. Well this is weird. The podcast is back! After three weeks off we return with loads of great new music. Well, mostly new music and one or two older tracks. In actual fact, while the podcast has been on a break I haven’t. For the last three weeks the Edinburgh Man podcast has been appearing in the guise of a radio show on Edinburgh’s Fresh Fringe streaming radio station as part of the Edinburgh Fringe. It’s a spin-off from Fresh Air student radio that broadcasts during the term-time of Edinburgh University. Anyway, those shows featured the same level of exciting chat as the regular podcast, with the added bonus of some pearls of wisdom from Fresh Fringe producers. You can listen to all three shows over at http://mixcloud.com/edinburghman, if you are that way inclined. But enough of that, it’s podcasting time. Edinburgh Man #141 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. I do realise that many of my podcasts contain the words “I’m shattered”, followed by some lame excuse about how I’m not going to a gig. Tonight is no exception. Remember all those podcasts I used to do where I’d review four or five gigs that I’d been to in the previous week? And now I’m just doing an early podcast so I can have a cup of tea and go to bed? On the plus side, I do really like both tea and bed. Anyway, it’s the last live podcast for the next four weeks because the Edinburgh Festival is upon us. The good news, however, is that there’ll be a live “Edinburgh Man Radio” show at 8pm every Thursday on Edinburgh’s Fresh Air Festival Radio. You don’t get out of it that easily. 1. I’m writing this blog post while at a gig… I know, I know. I should be looking at the band. It’s Matt Norris supporting The Last Battle. He probably thinks I’m on Facebook or something. Anyway, it’s terribly bad form so let’s keep this brief. It was an early podcast tonight, mainly because I’m at this gig. Two gigs in a row too. Last night was The Spook School, Woog Riots and Finnmark! also at the Wee Red Bar. In fact, there are two great tracks from Woog Riots and Finnmark! on the show. Lots more music, in perhaps a rather eclectic mix. Oh, there may be some swearing too. That’s a lower case “s”, without an apostrophe… Edinburgh Man #139 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. I was actually a little bit nervous just as I sat down to record this podcast – the first live podcast in a month or so. Luckily I had the foresight to pour a nice glass of Dalwhinnie. DALWHINNIE! I’m sure at least once I referred to it as Drambiue during the show. Ah well, that’s what happens when you drink.
