Edinburgh Man #232

Well, as experiments go this one didn’t work. Firstly, let me apologise for the lack of podcasts for two weeks. I managed to sprain my neck, which doesn’t sound too bad except that it resulted in the worst headache I’ve ever had emanating from my neck and extending around my head non-stop for 10 days. Painkillers did nothing. All told it was pretty grim. And I missed lots of really interesting gigs. Dang. Anyway, this morning Edinburgh Man Junior did his usual of waking up sometime between 5 and 6am singing the Imperial March, so I didn’t fancy recording a podcast late evening. So instead I decided to rope him into it and record it before he went to bed. Hence this week’s show basically consists of him being cheeky and saying how he hated each track. Well, actually he liked one track because it sounded like The Thermals, but all the dream-pop, that got a big thumbs down. 1. typesetter – “Sideways” (Played courtesy of typesetter, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. Edinburgh Man #231

Podcast Number 231, or “Edinburgh Man and Edinburgh Man Junior’s Alternative Record Store Day”. For yes – Edinburgh Man Junior makes his proper podcasting debut on this week’s show. In celebration of Record Store Day here is a special behind the scenes insight into how the two Edinburgh Men spend this annual event. Once upon a time it used to be about queuing in the cold at 7am to buy wacky coloured repressings and crazily priced box sets. But that’s all in the past. I can’t even keep up with vinyl releases throughout the rest of the year let alone the RSD ones too. Our day involve swimming lessons, coffee and cake, play park visits, children’s birthday parties and yes – some record store related shenanigans. Oh, and hiccups. Lots of hiccups. 1. Soft Deadlines – “Triplicate” (Played courtesy of Soft Deadlines, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. Edinburgh Man #230

Apologies yet again for a late podcast. I’m addicted to “Meetup” at the moment, and last night – Thursday night – when I normally record the show I ended up at a “digital media” meetup. I thought it would mostly be about podcasting, but in the end it was more work-related than fun-filled. So I spent an hour this morning putting together the playlist for this week’s show while sitting in Artisan Roast. This is getting to be a habit isn’t it? Doing podcast preparation while sitting in a coffee shop. Although, to be honest, there are worse ways to spend a Friday morning. 1. Kaspar Hauser – “Pencil Doings” (Played courtesy of Soft Power Records)2. DTHPDL – “The Future” (Played courtesy of DTHPDL)3. Lionizer – “Bleach” (Played courtesy of Lionizer, Released under a Creative Commons licence)4. Cracked Up – “Let’s Go” (Played courtesy of Cracked Up, Released under a Creative Commons licence)5. Edinburgh Man #229

I like to try and do podcasts on Thursday nights, but yesterday was a crazy busy day so I wasn’t able to put together a playlist in time. Instead I collated the playlist this morning in Brew Lab while enjoying a (free) coffee. Actually, I suspect I drank too many free coffees this morning because within a couple a minutes of starting this show I had a blazing headache. I struggled to the end like a trouper though. Made easier by all the great music, including tracks from OhBree, King Post Kitch, Buddy Holliday Pegasissy, and more. 1. Edinburgh Man #228

Ahh… It was a lovely sunny Good Friday morning as I recorded this week’s podcast. Slightly confused chat including me embarrassingly saying that the band “Leggy” were from LA rather than Cincinnati. So many apologies to them. I’ve just realised that because it’s the morning I haven’t had my coffee yet – so that’s the defence I’m going with. Other music includes the new single “Kickstart” from Edinburgh’s Book Group, which is released today. There’s also a new track from that brilliant Adam Stafford album, and a track from the Second Hand Marching Band / Benni Hemm Hemm collaboration. 1. Book Group – “Kickstart” (Played courtesy of Book Group)2. Uniform Motion – “False Start” (Played courtesy of Uniform Motion, Released under a Creative Commons licence)3. Edinburgh Man #227

Well this is confusing. I thought I was being clever on tonight’s show – clever and lazy. One of the tracks I intended to play I was just going to stream from the artist’s Bandcamp page, but when I went to the page during the show they’d taken the track down! Not only that, they’d taken down all their tracks! From then on I went a bit off-piste and played some random stuff instead. This week’s show includes a cassette release from Georgia’s Sea Ghost, a track from the upcoming Adam Stafford album, and a track from the first album by The Last Battle, on account of the fact it was their farewell gig at the weekend and I’m already having withdrawals. 1. Sea Ghost – “Cowboy Hat” (Played courtesy of Sea Ghost / Z Tapes, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. Adam Stafford – “Atheist Money” (Played courtesy of Adam Stafford / Song by Toad)3. EGO – “Crowd” (Played courtesy of EGO, Released under a Creative Commons licence)4. The Last Battle – “Ruins” (Played courtesy of The Last Battle)5. Pine + Palm – “Explain (Demo)” (Played courtesy of Pine + Palm, Released under a Creative Commons licence)6. The Mountain Goats – “No Children (Live)” (Played courtesy of Mountain Goats / Archive.org)

Remember last week when I said I’d played the last single by The Last Battle? Well, I didn’t. It was the second last. Here’s the last one on tonight’s show, and it’s a belter. The single that is, not the show. The show is… well… you know… mildly acceptable. Also featured are new tracks from The Second Hand Marching Band & Benni Hemm Hemm, Little Big Bangs, and more. In fact, one of the tracks on the show has mysteriously vanished from the Internets, but since I plan these things so far in advance I’ve still got a copy… If only I’d taken down some information about the artist when I downloaded the track. 1. pine voc – “100% natural” (Played courtesy of Cardboard Future, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. Edinburgh Man #225

On the ball as ever. I recorded this podcast earlier on this evening and then totally forgot about it. Here we are, as I’m locking up the house and getting ready for bed I think – “I’m sure there was something else I was going to do tonight”… Oh yeah, upload a podcast. On tonight’s show new singles from Storm the Palace and The Last Battle. Tracks from new albums by Witching Waves and Great Thunder & Radiator Hospital. And a track from six years ago by cars & trains. 1. Witching Waves – “Twister” (Played courtesy of Soft Power Records)2. The Last Battle – “Black” (Played courtesy of The Last Battle)3. Edinburgh Man #224

A lunchtime recorded podcast this week, and another one featuring Edinburgh Man Junior as the cover star. He’s starting to get big enough to actually be useful now. Here he is shuffling snow. As I record this episode, with the sun streaming through the window in the middle of the day, it’s hard to believe there was even just a light dusting of snow a few days ago. That said, it’s still damn cold… On today’s show… no tapes I’m afraid. But some great music from Leggy, The Mountain Goats, Tiger Waves and more 1. Leggy – “Bruises” (Played courtesy of Leggy)2. The Mountain Goats – “The Legend of Chavo Guerrero (Live)” (Played courtesy of The Mountain Goats / archive.org)3. Aw man. I think this is only the second time in the history of the podcast that I recorded a show and it didn’t actually record and I had to record the whole thing again. It was already a technological juggling act because I played all the music tracks “as live” from cassette! I know, I know. Be prepared to experience wobbly music and non-Dolby hiss. 1. The Son(s) – “If I Hear You Talk Apostrophes Again…” (Played courtesy of Olive Grove Records / The Son(s))2. Tieranniesaur – “Intro” (Played courtesy of Soft Power Records)3. Edinburgh Man #222

In a change from the usual yearly routine Edinburgh Man is not taking a break for the month of January, although you’d be forgiven for not realising this since there wasn’t a show last week. Never mind, we kick the year off today with chat about retro technology and a track from a new cassette by Baker Island. Also on the show tracks from Jo Mango (with RM Hubbert), “Not” Spot Collins, and Plastic Animals. Sounds like a great start to 2016… 1. Baker Island – “Write Home” (Played courtesy of Baker Island)2. Best of 2015

It’s the Edinburgh Man Best of 2015 show! If you listened to the show throughout 2015 you’ll know that I had some issues with the regularity of the show in terms of duration, content and release dates. Normally at the end of the year I produce two shows comprising a listener voted top 50 tracks of the year. This year, I just didn’t have the time to devote to putting such a show together. However, in making the “weekly” shows I stick a rating in the comments field of the tracks – this helps me select the music for each show. So this year, instead of doing a listener selection, I just sorted all the tracks I played by my rating, and out popped a 25 track show! No more thought and preparation has gone into this show – other than pouring myself a big glass of Drambuie – so it’s likely to be as much of a surprise to me as you. 25. Edinburgh Man #221

It’s almost Christmas… which can only mean one thing. No more Lego Advent Calendar! Hooray. Hopefully this will mean longer sleeps, and it will definitely mean a reduction in the amount of Lego construction that Edinburgh Man Junior requests at some ungodly hour every morning. The last regular podcast of the year. Next week will be a 2015 round-up. Not the normal top 50 show voted by listeners because your erstwhile host has been working up until yesterday and hasn’t had the time to pull of the organisational craziness required. So I’m just going to play a couple of hours worth of my favourites tracks of 2015. 1. Book Group – “Late Show” (Played courtesy of Book Group)2. General Sherman – “Cajun bubbles” (Played courtesy of Spooker Rekkids)3. The Paperback Throne – “No Mean Christmas” (Played courtesy of The Paperback Throne)4. Edinburgh Man #220

Isn’t this podcast a week late? Yes. Yes it is. You know how I had a cold and sore throat two weeks ago? Well less than 24 hours after getting better I came down with the lurgie all over again! Crazy. As ever I lay the blame squarely at the feet of Edinburgh Man Junior who is responsible for a new ailment back home from nursery as frequently as he brings home artwork consisting of glitter and crepe paper. Anyway, today’s show is decidedly acoustic and lo-fi, although there is at least one… if not two… festive songs in there, so you can’t say that Edinburgh Man isn’t embracing the season. 1. Randolph’s Leap – “Jingle Bells” (Played courtesy of Randolph’s Leap)2. Nick Nace – “I Can’t Take It One More Night I Can’t Take It One More Day” (Played courtesy of Nick Nace)3. Blurgh. I’m choked with the cold this week, and my throat feels like someone is poking needles in it. So basically exactly how you want to feel when you’re recording a podcast. On today’s eclectic show there are three tracks by artists who were featured last week (you can blame a combination of illness and laziness for that), a Christmassy (although perhaps not festive) tune, and a 1980’s pop song. 1. Fresh – “Passing” (Played courtesy of Fresh)2. Kansas State Flower – “Burning Up” (Played courtesy of Kansas State Flower, Released under a Creative Commons licence)3. Townhouse Woods – “Julia And The Summer Day” (Played courtesy of Townhouse Woods, Released under a Creative Commons licence)4. I’m sorry. I bet you thought you were going to get away without having to suffer a podcast again this week, but unlucky. Here it is. And after the attempted slickness of last time, we’re back to the regular “as-live” nonsense. But at least there some decent music, including great new tracks from Townhouse Woods, The Belly of Paris, Trust Fund and more. 1. Townhouse Woods – “The Sweetest Treat” (Played courtesy of Townhouse Woods, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. Surprise! It’s a podcast! Apologies for not producing a podcast for the last couple of weeks. Real work has been somewhat manic, especially on Thursdays, so the weekly rambling music fest has suffered somewhat. No matter, here it is. And it’s “properly” edited, so maybe… just maybe… a bit less mumbly and shambolic than normal. Maybe. This is because I’ve been addicted to listening to professional (or as I like to call them – real) podcasts for the last few weeks. Perhaps you can spot this by the choice of opening track… 1. Breakmaster Cylinder – “The Reply All Theme” (Played courtesy of Breakmaster Cylinder, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. Well this is a bit strange. I haven’t recorded a podcast during the hours of daylight for a while, and certainly not during the actual day. Turns out it’s just as shambolic during the afternoon as it is in the evening. I blame it on the fact I’m recording this on an empty stomach. Which reminds me… I need to put the tea on… 1. Edinburgh Man #215

It’s school vacation week here in Edinburgh. Which means very little for me since Edinburgh Man Junior is still at nursery, although for everyone else who I work with it means 5 days of child wrangling. So basically I’m on my own in work for a week. As such I spent much of the day “working” in Artisan Roast. This was mostly nice and chilled out. Except for the time about 20 people tried to squeeze into the place. One guy even live streamed the queue on “Periscope”. I’m not entirely sure why anyone would wish to do such a thing, let alone watch it. Although apparently people from Moscow “said hello”. So if that was you, I was the guy in the background with his head down attempting to ignore the whole thing. 1. The Repossessors – “ride” (Played courtesy of The Repossessors, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. Another hastily prepared podcast. Actually, I quite like doing this on the hoof. I can’t believe I used to spend hours finely crafting the show only to incompetently bumble my way though it anyway. I reckon this “as live recording” is as good as any other – although I do tend to babble about my new phone way more than anyone (myself included) is likely to be interested in. The thing is, and to paraphrase “Clerks”, I shouldn’t even really be here – I should have got my ass into gear and have gone to see Low in Glasgow tonight. But I didn’t. So you get this show instead. The sacrifices I make for my “art”… 1. Family Selection Box – “breaking all the pieces apart” (Played courtesy of Family Selection Box, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. Too much coffeeeeeee!!!! I seem to be speaking at a bazillion miles an hour tonight in the first podcast for a few months. The reason? I may have partaken in a late afternoon single-origin double-espresso. Oh dear. Well we’ll know for next time won’t we? I’ve made a decision too – and it’s not just the caffeine talking. The podcast is coming back! Weekly. Not live. And of arbitrary length – hopefully at least 20 minutes. But at least it’s back! Hooray! 1. Edinburgh Man #212

Ah, the calm before the storm. I spent lunchtime working today in Princes Street Gardens before the craziness of the Edinburgh Festival starts tomorrow. Is it always this insane? I think it’s stepped up a notch this year, especially in terms of the corporate and advertising nonsense. There are advertising structures EVERYWHERE. And all for terrible looking shows. I hate those posters that are parodies of movie posters or something. Surely that suggests you lack imagination… why would I want to go and see a show based on photoshop skills rather than talent? That said, I’ll be doing a show on Edinburgh’s festival radio station Fresh Fringe again this year! Every Thursday at the earlier time of 6pm. 6pm until 8pm. Drive time. If an internet based radio station has a drive time. 1. By Toutatis – “Into The Woods” (Played courtesy of By Toutatis)2. Oh hello podcast listeners! Apologies that it’s being so long since the last show. Blah, blah work, blah blah chronic pain… Anyway, podcast 211 is here now, so let’s not say any more about it. That picture there is a bit of the cover of John Darnielle’s book “Wolf in White Van”. Is it any good? I haven’t read it yet, but he’s talking about it at the Edinburgh Book Festival this year so I thought I should read it beforehand. I just need to finish this shonky 1970’s Arthur C Clarke sci-fi book about enigmatic aliens that I’m currently reading. Anyway, what’s in the show? Music! Great music, and bad chat. What does that tin sign say that you can buy in every tourist trap place in the world..? “Do stupid things faster and with more energy”? I think that’s what’s happened here. I’ve foolishly increased my caffeine intake recently, and for the last few days I’ve had two long blacks each morning in place of my usual one. This seems fine while I’m working during the day, but by the time the evening comes around my body is still wide awake, while my brain is barely functional. As this podcast demonstrates. First of all, the show was recorded on my phone because I forgot to charge up the iPad. So apologies for the dodgy(er) quality. Secondly my brain was less engaged than normal, so there is a whole lot of rambling. Luckily, the music is aces. 1. Pinact – “Everybody Says” (Played courtesy of Gerry Loves Records)2. Here’s a tip for any would-be professional podcasters – if you make a playlist more than three weeks ago it’s always a good idea to listen to it again before you record the show – just in case you’ve gone off any of the tracks. As perhaps happened on this week’s show. I feel awful about it – I’ve never done that before. Many apologies – especially for the artist in question. I normally only ever play tracks that I really like. I must of been in a funny mood when I chose it. Anyway, see if you can guess which one it will be. Regarding this week’s photo – you’ll just have to listen to the show to find out what the score is with Q The Winged Serpent there. 1. Today I bunked off work in the afternoon and went to the degree show at ECA. I moaned during the podcast that it wasn’t as good as the last couple of years… but as I think about it now I reckon I was a bit unfair. There was lots of interesting work on display – I’ll have to pop back before the show finishes this weekend. Anyway, this photo was taken from the balcony in the main hall. That chap down there was singing Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”. Quite why he was singing one of the worst Stevie Wonder songs I’m not entirely sure. I didn’t want to venture nearer and find out. On the podcast itself… Well, it was rather swiftly curtailed. I’d planned for a 45 minute long show, but it turned out the new streaming service I was using only had 30 minutes left (after I’d been testing it for 30 minutes before the show). So this is a short episode. Apologies! 1. Les Frères Bandini – “Rabbit in a log” (Played courtesy of Les Frères Bandini, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. The podcast returns after a short vacation to New York City! Today’s rambling tales cover such subject matter as lactose intolerant sickness and the playgrounds of NYC. Also, many apologies if you attempted to listen to this show live. Dodgy internet issues plagued the show, and the web connection seemed to give out halfway through. Hopefully the recording will be fine. I must sort this out before attempting another live show. Music-wise, it’s definitely got a bit of a Brooklyn vibe, with tracks from Las Lanas, The Planes, Toby Goodshank and more. 1. Ahem. Look, in my defence I did say that the last podcast was going to be the last REGULARLY SCHEDULED podcast for a while. And it is, what? 9 or 10 days since the last one? So that’s irregular. Otherwise this is basically what you’ve come to expect. Rambling and music. This time the rambling is from my new standing desk contraption – aka a chest of drawers with a half open drawer and strategically placed planks of wood. There is a chance the whole thing may collapse on top of me during the show. 1. Poor Things – “No Way Jose” (Played courtesy of Gerry Loves Records)2. So this year I went off to Record Store Day with the express intention of buying one record at the most. It’s not because of some fashionable stand against the concept, more just a lack of enthusiasm for the whole thing. So I bought one record, and spent more time in the Library reading books to Edinburgh Man Junior than I spent in any record shops. How times have changed. Unfortunately, when I got home I remembered that the stylus (and cartridge – for these things aren’t separate) was broken. So I had to go back out into town and spend £80… Yes, £80(!) on a new cartridge. I have a feeling that £80 was how much the whole turntable cost me back in my student days when I purchased it via a classified advert in the back of the Edinburgh Herald and Post. So in the end I spent as much money as normal. At least the record was a nice colour. 1. OOPS – “Miss Yourself” (Played courtesy of OOPS, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. So last night I went to see Tigercats, Plastic Animals, and Fever Dream at Henry’s Cellar Bar. It was the first standing up gig I’ve been at all year! I was going to go out again tonight and see Stanley Brinks and Freschard, but more than 14 hours of standing yesterday seems to have had an adverse reaction on this old man’s back. However, earlier on today, before I’d decided to spend this evening lying down rather than tapping my foot to French anti-folk, I recorded this podcast as I walked to work. Yep – it’s one of those outside broadcasts recording on an iPhone! 1. Nixon – “Too Aware” (Played courtesy of Cath and Dad Records, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. On tonight’s podcast: 1) I use a flimsy looking iPad stand – let’s hope it doesn’t fall over halfway through with “hilarious” consequences. 2) Edinburgh Man Junior sings random lyrics to “The Farmers in the Dell” loudly from the other room. No doubt this isn’t picked up by the microphone and you probably assume it’s all in my head. 3) I have notes! On paper! And I manage to get even more confused as a result. 4) I summarily dismiss the talents of the creator of one of the seminal TV shows of the last century because of the way he ate a sandwich. 1. Time for another exciting edition of the Edinburgh Man Podcast! And again, it’s not a live show. I’ve done something to the live server so that it won’t stream for more than 5 minutes. I will fix it at some point, but not tonight because, as always, I’ve left it all to the last minute. Actually, I haven’t left everything to the last minute. I did a whole load of preparation for tonight’s show, including writing notes while I had my coffee this morning! Shocking. Will this professionalism be reflected in the quality of the show? Probably not. 1. Rough Shape – “Michigan State Hospital” (Played courtesy of Rough Shape, Released under a Creative Commons licence)2. Oh, hello. Apologies for the lack of podcasts for the last two weeks. For the first week I came down with an unpleasant dose of tonsillitis, so I thought it best to postpone. And this time last week we were off to the sick kids hospital with Edinburgh Man Junior, so podcasting wasn’t really at the forefront of our minds. Anyway, the good news is that everyone is healthy again so normal service can resume. It’s that all important podcast number 200! Except it’s not really. I suspect podcast number 177 was actually the 200th show. So on that note there’s not much special about tonight’s show. Well – other than the usual outstanding podcasting professionalism, of course. 1. The Tuts – “Do I Have to Look for Love?” (Played courtesy of The Tuts)2. No live podcast tonight I’m afraid. But there is this one… this one was recorded last night. Dr Nic was out last night and Edinburgh Man Junior seemed to be rather soundly asleep, so I thought I’d record the podcast 24 hours early. It also seems like Dr Nic and I haven’t had a night in for ages, so if I did a pre-record then we’d have Thursday evening to ourselves. I realise that sounds romantic, but to be quite honest those episodes of House of Cards aren’t going to watch themselves. 1. Cat Smell – “Revenge Song” (Played courtesy of Cat Smell)2. It’s happening. I’m getting addicted to coffee again. Look! I’ve got a full card of stamps from Artisan Roast so the next one is free! This is how they get you… Earlier on this week the soundtrack to my morning coffee in Artisan was Django Reinhardt, and as a result I felt compelled to play some on the podcast. If you’re not aware of the “78rpm and Cylinder Music Collection” at archive.org I suggest you check it out. There’s a goldmine of the most incredible music from the first half of the 20th century. Apart from the crackles and somewhat lo-fi recording they still sound fresh to this day. I could get lost in there… 1. Hmmm… The podcast is about to start in 5 minutes and it looks like Bandcamp’s website is down for maintenance. Not a problem for music but I sort of rely on it for the information about the bands and tracks I play on the show. In fact, I 100% rely on it and if it doesn’t come back then the chat is going to be pretty thin on the ground. I suppose it’s not as bad as the bands who rely on it for actually money – that’s probably a bit more annoying. Anyway, this week I have been walking up and down Edinburgh’s canal. Look – there’s a photo of it the other day after it had been snowing. Isn’t it lovely. Sigh. If that’s the quality of the banter you’re in for a tough 30 minutes. 1. Hopefully the torrential rain outside the window at Edinburgh Man towers doesn’t get picked up by the microphone on this week’s Tuesday night podcast. It’s been snowy, cold, sunny (for a short while at least), sleety and rainy today. I was supposed to pick up the scooter today from a garage out in the wilds of East Lothian. I decided not to bother. Last time that sort of thing happened it wouldn’t start by the time I did go and pick it up. Hopefully this won’t happen again. Enough rambling. Tonight’s show includes music from Colour Me Wednesday, a new single on Odd Box Records from T-Shirt Weather, and a track from the LP that’s on the Voyager space crafts. Yep. 1. The second podcast of the week! I’m not totally convinced I’ve got this thirty minute podcast thing sorted out – it feels so weird. It’s also a bit strange because it’s the second podcast using my DIY standing podcasting station – which is basically a collection of boxes stacked randomly. At any point the show may abruptly end because I’ve knocked something over in some sort of podcast jenga. Anyway, music-wise we kick off with a remix of Wozniak’s Five Star, a new track from Brooklyn’s Arm Candy, and a whole loads more besides. 1. Ahahahah. I’m already regretting this two podcasts a week lark and I haven’t even started the first one. Hopefully you didn’t listen live, and instead went to see Deerhoof in Glasgow. In a spectacular babysitting fail I’m unable to go and see one of my favourite ever bands. Organisational disaster. Never mind, there’s a packed musically eclectic podcast for you today including multiple tracks from Olympia’s G.L.O.S.S from the release of the week! 1. G.L.O.S.S. – “G.L.O.S.S. Back when I started this podcast I made it 30 minutes long. Partially because I had no idea what I was doing, but mostly because I thought that 30 minutes was a good length of time for a new music podcast. Over the years it hass grown in size to 45-60 minutes in length for a variety of reasons. However, recently I’ve been listening to lots more podcast during my commute, and I still think there is a sweet spot round about half an hour. So, as an experiment, we’re reverting to 30 minute long podcasts for a few weeks. I don’t want you to feel like you’re being short changed though, so there’ll be two a week! Starting next week. 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In other news I shaved my beard off. My chin is cold and my son laughs hysterically at me. 1. What a day. Today was the day I tried (and loved using) a standing desk. I know, I’m about two years too late to this fad, but now, as I sit (SIT!) at my normally podcasting console I wish I had a standing desk for that too. That said, I’m a bit shattered. I guess standing up for most of the day probably contributed to that somewhat. In fact, I’m really looking forward to lying down. On the podcast I talk at moderate length about standing desks, porridge (yep) and poo filled soft play areas. If only I’d stuck by my promise last week not to talk much. 1. It’s the first rambling podcast of the year… and I’m not ready for it. Firstly I couldn’t even find the cables that would allow me to broadcast live. And secondly I had at least four, maybe five, abortive attempts at starting the show. We got there in the end though. Best of 2014 Part 2

It’s the end of year podcast – the last one of 2014. As such I’m tucking into an array of left over Christmas food and drink, including a nice red ale and the remnants of a cheese selection. All the good cheeses have gone mind you, and I’m stuck with Wensleydale and Cranberry. There’s also a gingerbread house… although that’s been kicking around for a couple of weeks so I suspect it’s not a great idea to start on that. Anyway, more importantly it’s the second half of the best tracks from 2014 as voted by the listeners of the show. Some fantastic selections in there, and the number one track is absolutely spot on if you ask me. 24. Dressed Like Wolves – “Death Of Girls” (Played courtesy of Dressed Like Wolves)23. Best of 2014 Part 1

I have port (both store bought and home made) and a thumb piano. This can only mean it’s the first part of the annual Edinburgh Man end-of-year poll results show. Throughout the month of December listeners to the podcast have been voting for their five favourites tracks from 2014 that were played on the show. These votes have been counted and crunched and the resulting list will be played over two shows. This is the first one – tracks 50 down to number 25. A word of warning – I consume two glasses of port throughout the podcast and there is some rambling as a result. Next time I’ll stick to Christmas tea. Honest. 50. Ah, the last regular podcast of the year. And the good news for me is that I can now drink again. To celebrate I’ve cracked open the Aldi Tawny Port (which is rather nice) and pulled together the most chilled out, and slightly festive playlist that I could managed. In fact, I was tidying up this week and found some homemade white “port” lurking at the back of a cupboard in a demijohn. I haven’t tasted it yet, but took a whiff and if nothing else it smells fairly alcoholic. Perhaps next week’s first part of the end-of-year poll may have to be fuelled by this questionable liquid. 1. I don’t know why I’m bothering to do this podcast – it won’t be as riveting as Serial, right? You’ve been listening to Serial haven’t you? No? Well, stop reading this nonsense and go and listen to it right now. For some reason I thought there were only ten episodes of Serial so I held of starting it until they’d all been released. And this week I listened to them all while walking to and from work. Come rain or shine or snow… But I just finished episode 10 today and there are two more to go! So go and listen to them now. I need someone else to talk to about it. Meanwhile, on this podcast. Some music and stuff. Edinburgh Man #189 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Regular listeners will remember that my MacBook died recently and I’ve been having to use an antiquated computer instead. Well, the good news is that thanks to potentially counterfeit spare parts from eBay it’s back up and running! So today’s image is the Mac as it went under the knife… or the screwdriver… So it’s working – albeit with a bit more sellotape than is probably to be recommended. Music-wise, great indie-pop from Madrid’s Deers (yes, I realised I’m late to the party with regards to their brilliance), a new track from By Toutatis singer Daniel Cochran Middle Eastern project The Belly of Paris, and from Last Battle singer’s Scott Longmuir’s Beard of Truth solo project. Tonight I’ve managed to cobble up an alternative computer for broadcasting the podcast live – the result of which means I’m podcasting with a massive screen in front of me. It feels almost professional, if it wasn’t for the fact I’ve fiddled with the microphone settings and can’t get it back to the way it used to be. I spend the whole podcast sitting very still because every little bump seems to make the sound go weird. In music news I managed to go to two gigs this week. Two! Jesus and Mary Chain last Friday and Cheatahs last Saturday. My legs have just about recovered and I try and give you rambling reviews of both gigs. Edinburgh Man #187 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Another new podcast and another new cup. Perhaps I should always make the photos for the podcast a picture of my current hot drink in my most recently purchased mug. This mug is from Edinburgh’s fantastic Artisan Roast. Coffee of distinction for sure. On today’s podcast I’m a bit grumpy. There are many contribution factors from technology with in-built obsolescence to peeing toddlers. What fun. Music-wise, tracks from the wonderful Jonnie Common, Wozniak, Stanley Odd and more. At least there’s good music to cheer me up. Edinburgh Man #186 by Edinburgh Man on Mixcloud 1. Jonnie Common – “Binary 101” (Played courtesy of Song by Toad Records) 2.
