Sit down in a comfy chair, pour yourself a big glass of wine, and chill out to today’s relaxed podcast of indie folk tunes. Yep. A couple of days ago I hadn’t even made a playlist for the show, and when I sat down to put the music together I must of been in a pretty chilled out mood, because it’s all a bit lower tempo than normal. This is partly helped by the fact that as I was looking for the music, Edinburgh based Song, by Toad Records uploaded a brilliant sampler album to Bandcamp. Many thanks for that Matthew! There are three great tracks from Edinburgh bands in the show too! A demo by Meursault from that sampler album, a brilliant new track from The Spook School, and some laid back folk from Lindsay & The Storm. Ahhhhhh. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Song, by Toad Records, and The Spook School. All tracks are released under Creative Commons licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Lindsay & The Storm – “In The Morning” (download track free and buy album from Bandcamp) 2. The podcast is on location! Recorded in a hotel room in Athens, underneath the Parthenon, although there’s nothing very Athenian about it… except the rambling chat, and the background noise of traffic. It’s a dodgy sounding all new podcast recorded and mixed (for the most part) on my iPhone! On this show, there’s another track from the new acoustic album by J Mascis, a track from the debut album by Edinburgh’s Black International, and a track by Shambles Miller – which popped into my head while I was watching a protest march in Athens. This podcast was recorded and partially mixed using MultiTrack DAW by Harmonicdog, and tracks were directly downloaded to the iPhone and imported using Downloads – Download Manager. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, Shambles Miller, Sub Pop, and Black International.Tracks 5 and 6 are released under a Creative Commons licence. A pre-recorded show! I’m busy this week, and in anticipation of that fact I recorded this show last week! In fact, only about 48 hours after the last show. As a result, it’s light on chat. No new gigs have been attended, no new records have been purchased, so it’s a little bit more music than normal. There’s some new music – including a track by Forbidden Friends, the new project by Hutch Harris from The Thermals, and track from the latest Penguins Kill Polar Bears EP that gets a US release this week. There’s some old music too. I’ve been rummaging around archive.org recently – you may have noticed this from the Blind Willie Johnson track from a few weeks ago. Well this week, I delve into the Live Music Archive – a collection of fan made recordings by bands who allow their music to be freely recorded and traded. I pull out a live version of Low by Cracker, recorded earlier this year at Cambridge, MA. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Kill Rock Stars, Matt Norris & The Moon, IODAPromonet, Cracker, BEKO DSL and Evil Hand. Track 4 is trader friendly, and track 6 is released under a Creative Commons licence. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Forbidden Friends – “Tiny Hands” (download free and buy from Kill Rock Stars) 2. Matt Norris & The Moon – “First Light Of Day” (download track free from Bandcamp) 3. On today’s podcast… my ears seem to be returning to normal! Helped no doubt by the fact I’ve been wearing earplugs at gigs recently, including a brilliant gig with Zoey Van Goey and Withered Hand – a fundraiser for Withered Hand’s trip to SXSW in Austin next week. Hopefully by the time the podcast goes live, this will all have been sorted, but at the time of recording Dan from Withered Hand’s visa is held up as those with the power aren’t convinced that he is an artist of extraordinary ability! Of course he is, and to prove it I play a track from his brilliant debut album “Good News” which sees a US release this month on Absolute Kosher records. Elsewhere, there’s a track from the new EP by The Dum Dum Girls, a track from another new EP by Edinburgh’s Trapped Mice, and a great bit of lo-fi goodness from the new album by German Error Message. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Sub Pop, IODAPromonet / Absolute Kosher and Trapped Mice. Tracks 4 and 6 are released under Creative Commons licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Dum Dum Girls – “He Gets Me High” (download track free and buy EP from Sub Pop) 2. Withered Hand – “New Dawn” (download track free and buy album from iTunes) 3. Edinburgh Man #46
It’s a full on Scottish music podcast this week. Well, okay, it’s a 50% Scottish music podcast. Three bands from Scotland, and three bands who aren’t. Two of the Scottish bands are from Edinburgh too! I got a bit inspired after a great gig by Kid Canaveral at the weekend as part of their SXSW fundraising kick, so I desperately wanted to play one of my favourite tracks of theirs on the show. It’s also a track that isn’t from their album, so there’s an off chance that it’s new to a few people. Kid Canaveral are going to be in New York this month en route to Austin, so if you are in or around NYC then I recommend you try and catch them live. Elsewhere on today’s show, there is a brilliant track by Dressed Like Wolves from the “A Pile of Lo-Fi #9” compilation, another track from the brilliant debut album from Come On Gang!, and a track from the debut album by The Son(s) that comes out this Monday. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, Come On Gang!, Straight To Video and Olive Grove Records. Tracks 4 and 5 are released under Creative Commons licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Bearsuit – “When Will I Be Queen” (download track free and buy album from iTunes)2. Come On Gang! – “Wheels” (buy album from Bandcamp)3. Kid Canaveral – “Stretching the Line” (buy E.P. from Bandcamp)4. Not much to say about today’s show, except that it’s a miracle I’ve managed to get it together at all. Here’s a tip for any nerds out there, if you use Filevault protection on your Mac and then upgrade the hard drive, the maximum size of your home folder is still based on the old disk! Despite having 300GB free I was unable to write any new files to my drive. Including the file for the podcast. Yikes! Anyway, after a quick clean out I’ve been able to save the file, but I supposed I should fix it properly… But not tonight. On today’s show a great blues track by Blind Willie Johnson from 1927. Surely the oldest track I’ve played on the show. There’s a shoegaze tribute to the current Doctor Who companion (yes, you heard that right), and we end with a blistering track from the new Mogwai album (do they do anything other than blistering tracks?). Lots more music besides, and unfortunately for you, chat. Also mentioned in today’s podcast… I did an interview with Chris Hynd for his Plentyside blog. If you really want to, you can read that interview here. I also mention the Kid Canaveral SXSW fundraiser with The Last Battle this Saturday night at The Wee Red Bar at Edinburgh College of Art. You can buy tickets for that online, or if you’re in town you buy them at Avalanche Records with no booking fee. Oh, and did I mention the podcast is a year old this week! No? Well it is. Happy birthday podcast… Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet and Sub Pop. Tracks 1, 3, and 4 are released under Creative Commons licences, track 2 is public domain. My ears are still ringing from the Come On Gang launch album gig on Saturday night. But I just about managed to hear enough to pull together this podcast. Outrageously, I didn’t notice the multiple “Astronaut” references in today’s show, not sure how I missed that. Anyway, there’s loads of great music, including two tracks from Edinburgh bands. A wonderful track from the aforementioned Come on Gang closes the show, and we start with a great pop song from Cancel the Astronauts. In between, lots of music including some acoustic indie folk from The Mean Faced Boy, and track from ex-Seattleite Justin Ripley‘s new Just Just album “No More Vintage”. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Cancel The Astronauts, EardrumsPop, Justin Ripley, Cakes and Tapes and Come on Gang! Tracks 3 and 5 are released under Creative Commons licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Cancel The Astronauts – “Funny For A Girl” (buy EP from Bandcamp)2. How exciting! I’ve just discovered uneaten (although slightly broken) Christmas chocolate in the cupboard, so it’s a chocolate fuelled podcast. Surely one of the best kinds. On today’s show, I’m recovering from a slightly sleepless weekend as a result of clanking hotel radiators. But there’s lots to wake me up, including another track from the upcoming Twilight Singers album, a wonderful sounding track from The Beets on Captured Tracks, and we end with a brilliant song on Cake and Tapes from Sutcliffe Catering Co. But finally, and something I totally forgot to mention in the show, is that this Saturday is the final ever gig – and the launch party for their debut album – from Edinburgh’s Come On Gang. You can still get tickets for only £5 at WeGotTickets. 1. Shugo Tokumaru – “Port Entropy” (download track free and buy album from Polyvinyl) 2. Say Hi – “Devils” (download track free and buy album from Barsuk Records) 3. The Beets – “Dead” (download track free and buy album from iTunes) 4. Achtung Hans – “Dreamdate” (download track free from Soundcloud) 5. The Twilight Singers – “Blackbird and the Fox” (download track free and buy album from Sub Pop) 6. Sutcliffe Catering Co. – “Ponderosa White” (download track free and buy EP from Bandcamp)

It seems to be ridiculously stormy outside in Edinburgh as I record this. I even got covered with snow on the way into work today. Crazy. Anyway, I’m tucked away in the back room, since this seems to have the least amount of wind and rain battering on the window. It still manages to distract me during the show though. Unfortunately Hipstamatic can’t really capture the full force of a stormy Scottish night, so here’s a photo of my desk in the back room instead. Complete with a Marmite brand mug of tea. On today’s show we start with a track from ex-Sleater-Kinney singer Corin Tucker, a brilliant song from Schwervon! who are currently on tour in the UK with The Vaselines, and we play not one, not two, but three tracks from Scottish bands! Including the first song off the new album by The Son(s). Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Kill Rock Stars, Olive Juice Music, Olive Grove Records, The Last of Barrett’s Privateers. Tracks 3 is released under Creative Commons licences. It’s Burns Night! Actually, that’s a lie. It was Burns Night. More specifically it was Burns Night when I recorded the show. That’s my excuse for consuming two glasses of whisky while recording this week’s podcast. That may also be the reason why it’s an hour long show. I just kept going. Playing music, drinking whisky, and talking rubbish. Anyhoo, a double length show for no reason other than I wanted to play lots of music, I think that’s okay. There’s some shoegaze sounds from Edinburgh School for the Deaf and The KVB, some lo-fi from Whiff Focker and Vincent Nifigance, some punk rock from Bratmobile, and loads, loads more. Pour yourself a whisky, and tuck into some haggis, neeps and tunes. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromoNet, Rose Parade, Edinburgh School for the Deaf, Kill Rock Stars, Music Alley, The Son(s), Baaneex, Sub Pop. Tracks 4, 7, 8 and 10 are released under Creative Commons licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. So, I’ve had three weeks to put this podcast together, and it almost fell apart at the last moment! Yesterday my hard drive died. I just amount managed to recover the most important files (the music for this show) before sitting down to record it this evening. If I hadn’t had these hard drive issues, this would have been an extra special hour long show, on account of the fact I’ve accumulated loads of music over the last few weeks that I wanted to play. In fact, it would have been even more music, if I hadn’t spent most of my spare time since Christmas playing ten year old games on my “new” Sega Dreamcast. Anyway, some great music in today’s show, kicking off with a unashamed blast of indie-rock (that like the idiot I am I keep calling indie-POP) from THE Allegroes, a ten year old track from The Polysics, and a brilliant track from Major Matt Mason USA. Lots more good stuff besides, even if I do start the show with a weird croaky voice. Welcome to 2011! Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Music Alley, Kill Rock Stars. Track 1, 4, and 5 are released under Creative Commons licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Best of 2010 - Part 2
2010 is almost over, and so is our countdown of the best tracks of the year, as voted by myself, and the listeners of the podcast. Fuelled by a glass of port and some Christmas chocolate, we listen to the tracks from number fourteen down to that all important(!) number one. Some great music in here, including at least one track that I had completely forgotten about. I also play two tracks from vinyl, for no reason other than I fancied it. Lots of Scottish bands, lots of indie-pop… but what is that top track of the year? Best of 2010 - Part 1
Is 2010 almost over already? If you’re a long time (long suffering?) listener to the podcast you’ll know that it all began near the start of 2010. During the last year some 150-200 tracks from 2010 have been played so I thought I’d pull together a “best of” list. However, I didn’t want this just to be my favourite tracks, so throughout November we had a poll, and lots of people voted. Actually, lots and lots of people voted! More people voted than listen to the show… hmm… Anyway, the votes have been counted. The gold envelopes are ready. The champagne is on ice. Get a glass of mulled wine in your hand, and let’s start the festive end-of-year proceedings off with Numbers 30 to 15, in this special hour long super show. It’s not Christmas! I was going to do a festive playlist, but went a bit “bah humbug” and you get this instead. A slightly eclectic selection of music in today’s show. We start off with an old track by Tender Trap from their debut album that came out way back in 2002. I like to keep you on your toes, so that’s followed by some Gameboy fun in the shape of “Master Dude”, the title track from Enfant Bastard’s 2010 album. There’s actually a bit more music than normal – the show is a whopping 45 minutes long! And I admit, there is a nod to the festive season too, with a track off the new single by The Last Battle. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Music Alley, IODAPromonet, Olive Grove Records, The Last Battle. Track 3, 4, 5 and 6 are released under Creative Commons licences. The snow is still here, and my voice still seems to be croaky, but I’m feeling better! So that’s a bonus. This week I apologise for last weeks podcast. I recorded it in a bit of a rush, I was still a bit under the weather, there were equipment issues, etc, etc. Anyway, this week we might still be under a foot of snow in Edinburgh, but I’m feeling better and playing with some new toys! The music is being played courtesy of a cool iPad app called djay which is great fun. Not that this stops me from making any mistakes. Quite the opposite. Music wise, two tracks from Edinburgh bands, including another track from the My Tiny Robots EP, as promised a few weeks back. There’s a great old track from All Girl Summer Fun Bands from ages ago, and more besides… Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of My Tiny Robots , Trapped Mice, Dead Bees Records, A Sunny Day in Glasgow / Mis Ojos Discos, K Records / Music Alley, The Throwing Muses. There might be two foot of snow outside, but I’m feeling a bit better than I was in last week’s cold medication fuelled show. On today show, there’s blues new and old from A Brief View of the Hudson and Son House, a great track from the new album by The Savings and Loan on Song By Toad records, and another brilliant track from the Kid Canaveral album. Also mentioned in today’s podcast are Tigercats. They have the following gigs coming up: 4th December 2010 at The Luminaire, Kilburn; 10th December 2010 at The Wilmington Arms, Clerkenwell; 11th December 2010 at The Alley Cat, 4 Denmark St; and 17th December 2010 at Nital House. Just a quickie in the shownotes department… I’m choked with the cold today, and peering at my MacBook screen through bleary eyes. Firstly, I should say a Happy Thanksgiving to all the listeners in the US. And on that note, the Thursday me is very thankful to the Tuesday me who had the foresight to record the show a few days ago just as I started to come down with the cold, rather than wait until tonight. I’m a bit croaky on the podcast, but right now I feel awful. Anyway, this time I really don’t talk as much as normal. On the plus side, there’s a bit more music to make up for it. Including… A brilliant pop song by Shy and the Fight, and wonderful track from the new honeybird & the birdies album, and we end with the new single from Asobi Seksu off their upcoming album. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, honeybird & the birdies and Polyvinyl Records. Tracks 1, 2, 4 and 5 are released under Creative Commons licences. Today I’m trying out a different audio set-up, so this may either sound brilliant, or terrible. Please let me know if it does… especially the latter. Anyway, 5 great tracks this week. Yes, only 5. Not because I talk too much… I think they’re just a bit longer than normal. First up is a great track from the debut EP by Edinburgh’s My Tiny Robots. I managed to see them twice in the last week, although I only caught one song at the first gig. The EP is brilliant, and you can be assured I’ll play one or two more tracks from it before the year is out. The first half of the podcast has a full-on indie pop vibe, culminating in a top pop song from Portugal’s Birds are Indie. There are actually two tracks by Portuguese artists in the show, the second is a bit of post-rock from Luis Costa. Saving the best for last, I play a track from the wonderful new Yusuf Azak album “Turn on the Long Wire” on Song by Toad records. If I did albums of the week, this would certainly be that. It’s quite special, and quite unlike anything I’ve heard this year. And, you can listen to Birds are Indie’s Ricardo Jerónimo’s podcast (as mentioned in the show) at http://labelthisruc.blogspot.com/ Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, My Tiny Robots / Woodthief Records, Birds are Indie and Song by Toad Records. Track 4 is released under a Creative Commons licence. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. My Tiny Robots – “Rock Bossa Nova Fourbeat Black” (buy EP from Bandcamp)2. Tigercats – “Easter Island” (buy EP from Bandcamp)3. Birds are Indie – “Kitchen Morning” (download EP free from Bandcamp)4. Luís Costa – “Wide” (buy single from Bandcamp)5. Yusuf Azak – “The Key Underground” (buy album from Song by Toad Records)

So, last week I talked too much and I did you out of a track. So this time I try and talk not quite as much so I can squeeze in the prerequisite six great slices of indie pop. It’s also a busy week gig-wise in Edinburgh (including the pictured Casiotone for the Painfully Alone) so I recorded this in a bit of a rush on Tuesday night. There is, as ever, lots of great music. Two tracks from Scottish bands – both of which are from releases that come out this coming Monday. There’s also a great track from the debut EP from Brooklyn’s Like, Mountains. What I almost mentioned in the show, but in the end totally forgot about is that you can still: VOTE FOR YOUR TOP 3 TRACKS FROM 2010 Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, Olive Grove Records, Maxwell Panther and Kill Rock Stars. Track 1 is released under a Creative Commons licence. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Like, Mountains – “Call Me A Liar” (buy EP from Bandcamp) 2. In today’s podcast I swap the alcohol for a cup of tea and things seem to go a bit better. First up we have a great track from the Kid Canaveral album. It’s one of my favourite releases from 2010 and I recommend you check them out. In fact, if you’re in or around Edinburgh on the 18th of December they are having a Christmas Party at The Lot featuring music from ballboy, King Creosote and many other great bands as well as themselves. You can get more information at the Kid Canaveral website. After the last few week’s indie-pop extravaganzas, I return to some lo-fi and shoegaze this week. Edinburgh Man #32
I’m hungry, tired, and I have a glass of port in my hand. This can only mean that it’s time for another podcast! Today I’m still in an indie-pop mood after the weekend’s popfest in Edinburgh. There’s a track from Bearsuit who opened the Saturday at the popfest, and three tracks from bands who will be playing at Glasgow’s popfest in December. Also on the show are New York’s Schwervon! – they’re supporting The Vaselines on their tour in the US and Canada this weekend. There’s a brilliant track from Lancaster’s Lovely Eggs, and the great new single from Glasgow’s Maple Leaves. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, Schwervon!, The Maple Leaves and The Hardy Boys. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. It’s a very special show. This coming weekend is the Edinburgh Popfest. A whole bunch of great bands play top quality indie-pop at three different venues over three days. Edinburgh Man #30
Apologies. Firstly, the flat is being decorated at the moment which means my temporary podcasting set-up wasn’t quite as level as I thought. You may hear some thuds now and again. Secondly, I’m a bit more subdued than normal, but there is some great new music nonetheless. First up, a track from the new Deerhoof album. It doesn’t come out in January 2011, but there was no way I could wait that long to play the song on the show. There’s also some great lofi sounds from Vincent Nifigance and Justin Ripley, and the show ends with a track from the brilliant “Cold Seeds” collaboration between Animal Magic Tricks, King Creosote, and Meursault; making it two podcasts in a row featuring music from Edinburgh bands! Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, killrockstars, Justin Ripley and Vincent Nifigance. Track 4 is released under Creative Commons licence. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Deerhoof – “The Merry Barracks” (download track free and pre-order album from Polyvinyl) 2. Edinburgh Man #29
Lots of new music in today’s podcast, a couple of creative commons tunes, and more importantly two songs by Edinburgh bands! I also hit the beer right at the start of the show, which might account for the fact I’m a bit more excitable than normal. Anyway, the show starts with a track from the new album by Marnie Stern, which is out this week on killrockstars. There’s a wonderful demo from the Throwing Muses, a couple of bits of lo-fi acoustic by Boy Scouts and One Tough Cookie, and tracks by Edinburgh’s Enfant Bastard and The Last Battle. Thanks so much to Scott Longmuir from the Last Battle for letting me play a track from their brilliant new album on the show. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, killrockstars, and The Last Battle. Tracks 2, 3 and 5 are released under Creative Commons licences. Edinburgh Man #28
Due to a mislaid power supply, we’re running on battery power for this podcast. And my headphones almost deafened me just before the show! Not the best of starts for Podcast 28. Music-wise, there’s a bit of what I’m informed is called “Baroque Pop”. I’m not sure about that, but it’s a great track from the latest EP in the Parenthetical Girls’ “Privilege” project. There’s an instrumental track from Spain’s Nodding by the Fire. Some psychedelic/shoegaze from Beko Digital Single Label and Dead Bees, and we end with some lo-fi acoustic indie folk from Alanna Takes A Solo, who we played in last weeks show. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet and Beko Digital Single Label. Tracks 2 to 6 are released under Creative Commons licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Parenthetical Girls – “Young Throats”2. Nodding by the Fire – “Where the Hills Are Fog”3. Weed Diamond – “M. Edinburgh Man #27
A little experiment today. The Podcast was recorded on Tuesday instead of Thursday due to an unusually high number of interesting gigs in Edinburgh this week. Whether this become a regular feature remains to be seen. I often complain that by Thursday I’m too wiped out to think of interesting things to say. This podcast probably confirms that it has little to do with the day of the week. Anyway, unusually all the music in this weeks show is from 2010. And even more unusually there is a track from a Scottish band in the mix. We start off though, with Seattle’s Salmon Thrasher, there’s a great fun video game / d&d influenced track from Alanna Takes a Solo, and a track from the Procedure Club’s great “Doomed Forever” album. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet and Beko Digital Single Label. Tracks 2, 3 and 6 are released under Creative Commons licences. The Scottish Enlightenment – “St. Germain is Thick Tonight” (download track free and purchase from Armellodie Records)6. Spy Island – “Vegan Witch Food Cart” (download album from Bandcamp)
Edinburgh Man #26
I think I’m getting back into the swing of this podcast lark after the short summer break. Lots of great music in today’s show, including two new tracks by podcast favourites Dressed Like Wolves and entertainment for the braindead. There’s also some fun surf-punk-indie-pop from Venezuela, and we start with a track from last year’s “Introducing” album by the Brilliant Colors. Chat-wise, you know the score. Today’s ramblings include The Pope, getting my album signed by Francis McKee from the Vaselines, cycling to work, and music, music, and more music! Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, Beko Digital Single Label and Poni Republic. Tracks 2-6 are released under Creative Commons licences. Edinburgh Man #25
Summer is over and the podcast is back! It felt like ages since I recorded one of these. I suppose it was, since the last three were those crazy outdoor fringe specials. It was a bit strange, but I think I figured out how to do it. At least by the end anyway. In today podcast there’s a bunch of new music, including two tracks by bands that I saw while in New York last week. Oh, and there is a great oldie by Talulah Gosh to end with. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, Music Alley, Dead Bees Records, Jamendo, Beko Digital Single Label and Olive Juice Music. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. The Brian Jonestown Massacre – La Façon dont la Machine vers l’Arrière (download track and album free from Bandcamp)2. Edinburgh Man on the Fringe #3
Featuring Delete the Banjax The third and final podcast from the Edinburgh Fringe. We’re back at the Pleasance, although the previous few weeks are begining to take their toll. It’s a more of a laid back affair as we attempt to remember, and review, all the shows we’ve seen since the last podcast. As ever, we play a variety of music to keep us awake, and there’s a chat with Dan, Caroline, Gareth and Sam from the wonderfully funny Delete the Banjax whose Delete the Banjax… and you! show is on in the Attic at the Pleasance Courtyard until the 30th of August. Reviewed in this show: Andrew Collins – Secret Dancing (now finished)The Invisible Dot Club – By The Sea (now finished)Charlyne Yi – Dances on the Moon (until 30th August – not 24th)Brendon Burns – Y’Know – Love ‘n’ God ‘n’ Metaphysics ‘n’ Shit (until 30th August)Sarah Millican – Chatterbox (until 29th August)Delete the Banjax… and you! Edinburgh Man on the Fringe #2
Featuring Dave Hill The second podcast from the Edinburgh Fringe. Gordon and I have moved next to an ice cream van, under the shadow of a giant inflatable purple cow. We talk about more fringe shows and play some indie rock! There are some rambling reviews for shows including Jean Abreu and 65daysofstatic’s Inside, Robin Ince’s Carl Sagan is Still My God and Robin Ince and Michael Legge’s Pointless Anger, Righteous Ire. We also pick out some shows that we’d like to see before the end of the festival, and talk about Gordon’s regular appearance as Audience Member Number 1 in the Collins and Herring Podcasts. But the real treat on this show is an interview with comedian and rock god Dave Hill who has two shows at the fringe: Big in Japan and the Dave Hill Explosion. Many, many thanks to Dave for taking time out from a hectic Fringe to have a chat in an attic high above the Pleasance. The Dave Hill Podcasting Incident The Collings and Herrin Podcast Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet, Music Alley and Polyvinyl records. Some tracks are also released under Creative Commons licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. Edinburgh Man on the Fringe #1
Jonny and guest co-host Gordon present the first of three special shows from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe! We struggle with background noise and a wobbly table on a wobbly floor. Every time someone walks by the microphone almost falls onto the ground, but we still play some great podsafe music. Some tracks are new, some tracks have been featured on the podcast before, and some are inspired by the Fringe itself. It’s all a bit different from normal. There’s a still lot of random chatter, although this week it is mostly all about the Fringe. We had hoped to do some interviews, maybe accost the odd Fringe performer as they passed by, but in the end we just chat and play music. If you’re in Edinburgh this month we have what might be (loosely) considered reviews, and also some recommendations. If you’re not in Edinburgh hopefully there’s still be something you might find interesting. If nothing else there’s some good music. Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Sub-Pop Records, Music Alley, IODAPromonet, killrockstars and Polyvinyl. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. 1. The Vaselines – “Sex With An X” (download track free and pre-order album from Sub-Pop)2. Edinburgh Man #24
It’s the second day of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe… and I’m out seeing some shows and soaking up the culture. But that shouldn’t stop the podcast. Oh, no. I recorded this last night and the show kicks off with a great old track by Beat Happening that is scarily 21 years old. Don’t worry, there’s lots of new music too, including a tracks from the latest Nina Nastasia and Grass Widow albums, and a track by Cobson from the most recent Dead Bees Sampler. 1. Beat Happening -“Black Candy”2. Grass Widow -“Shadow”3. Tense Kids -“Letter To Andrew (Three Weeks In)” (download album free from CLLCT)4. Nina Nastasia -“What’s Out There” (download track free from IODA)5. Cobson -“Rubbish” (download album free from Bandcamp)6. Bloody Knives -“Hands Around My Neck” (download album free from Bandcamp)
Edinburgh Man #23
On today’s show, I rush back home from being at an in-store gig and jump straight into recording a podcast. Edinburgh band My Tiny Robots were playing a gig in Urban Outfitters of all places. But there was free cider, so I couldn’t really not go along. There’s no tracks by My Tiny Robots in the podcast, but I recommend that you check out their myspace page. They also supported the Dum Dum Girls in Edinburgh earlier on this week, and I do play a track by the Dum Dum Girls. There’s also a brilliant fun track from the upcoming Vaselines album, a great track by Nan and the One Night Stands, and lots more. This podcast is also a bit longer than normal. I think that’s because I talk to much. One of the things I talk about is the Podcast Squared podcast which I was recently interviewed for. You should check out that podcast if you want to hear my talking even more rubbish than normal. 1. The Vaselines – “I Hate the 80’s” (download track free and pre-order album from Sub Pop)2. Dum Dum Girls – “D.A.L.” (download track free and buy from album Sub Pop)3. Xiu Xiu – “This Too Shall Pass Away (For Freddy)” (download track free and buy album from killrockstars)4. Nan & The One Night Stands – “High Ceilings” (buy album from Olive Juice Music)5. Memoryhouse – “To the Lighthouse” (download track free from BEKO DSL)6. Me You Us Them – “Me You Us Them” (download track free from Bandcamp and buy album from Amazon or eMusic)
Edinburgh Man #22
Testing, testing. 1. 2. I made a DIY pop filter for my microphone and this podcast is the big test. It’s a bit shonky looking, consisting mostly of a pair of old stockings (not mine) and a bit from a homebrew wine making kit. Hopefully, this should make my voice sound a little better than normal. Not that anyone really minds… it’s all about the music, right? Today’s podcast starts with a new track of the forthcoming of Montreal album, a brilliant track by Yer Heart! a couple of oldies from Thao and Iron & Wine, and more. 1. of Montreal – “Coquet Coquette” (download track free and buy album from Polyvinyl)2. Yer Heart! – “Skeletal Xylophone” (download album from cllct)3. Marching Band – “Another Day” (download track free)4. Starparty – “This Better Get Better” (download EP free from Bandcamp)5. Iron & Wine – “Boy With A Coin” (download track free and buy album from Sub Pop)6. Thao – “Bag Of Hammers” (download track free and buy album from killrockstars)
Edinburgh Man #21
21 already. The Edinburgh Man podcast comes of age. I’ve just about recovered from the craziness of last weekend. If anyone ever asks you to help organise an international conference, then make sure you get a good amount of sleep beforehand! Anyway, we start off with the new single from The Thermals, another track off the brilliant album by Allo Darlin’, there’s also some lo-fi indie folk, and a bit of garage rock to end on. What more could you want? Nothing more, that’s what. 1. The Thermals – “I Don’t Believe You” (download free from killrockstars)2. Allo Darlin’ – “My Heart is a Drummer” (download free from IODA)3. Million Young – “Sunndreamm” (download free from Beko DSL)4. The Sarcastic Dharma Society – “Cloud Sing” (download LP free from CLLCT)5. Dressed Like Wolves – “Messengers” (download LP free from CLLCT)6. The Easter Island Statues – “Jousting Colours” (download EP free from CLLCT)
Edinburgh Man #20
I’m recording this during the daytime. In fact it is the morning… well… actually it was the morning. Very quickly it became afternoon in the middle of the first track, but the intention was there. Today there’s a bunch of shoegazey, jangly indie pop towards the end of the podcast, some lo-fi folky fun in the middle, but we start of with New York’s brilliant Schwervon! 1. Schwervon! – “Poseur” (buy from Olive Juice Music, buy from iTunes) 2. Tense Kids – “Oh Idaho” (download free) 3. The Wind Whistles – “Turtle” (download free) 4. Beach Fossils – “Vacation” 5. Sundae – “Fascículo nº 7” (download free) 6. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – “Say No To Love”
Edinburgh Man #19
This is supposed to be July? It looks horrible outside… and I got soaked on the bike today. Oh well, let’s have a bit more of an eclectic mix of music tonight on the podcast. Coincidentally all the tracks are by female artists – but that suggests there was an element of planning rather than it being largely by chance. But the music is maybe a little bit different normal. That said – it’s all brilliant. You have my promise on that! 1. Sleater-Kinney – Burn Don’t Freeze2. The Throwing Muses – Lazy Eye3. Au Revoir Simone – Through the Backyards4. Go Away Birds – Quixotic5. Wisdom Tooth and Tinyfolk – Low Tide6. Entertainment For The Braindead – Relapse
Edinburgh Man #18
Apologies. I’m shattered this week. So if I sound a bit more tired than usual this is why. I’m afraid this means a bit less chat than normal too. However – just as much music as ever. There’s a track from the Dum Dum Girls album that was released back in March, another great track from the Slow Animal self-titled EP, and we end with a great live track from the Mountain Goats – courtesy of the Live Music Archive. 1. Dum Dum Girls – “Bhang Bhang, I’m a Burnout”2. Allo Darlin’ – “The Polaroid Song”3. Slow Animal – “Sanity”4. Eternal Summers – “Dye”5. The Falling Floors – “Honeybee”6. The Mountain Goats – “Song For Dennis Brown (Live)”
Edinburgh Man #17
A new podcast! I was running a bit late so ended up recording it in my smelly cycling clothes. Sorry for that. Thankfully smells don’t transfer along with podcasts. On the plus side, there’s a diverse selection of music today. A great old track from London’s Part Chimp kicks the show off. There’s also some lo-fi music from Maxwell Panther, and the great new single by Tender Trap off their upcoming album. 1. Part Chimp – “New Cross”2. Tender Trap – “Do You Want A Boyfriend?”3. Maxwell Panther – “Don’t Tell Linda”4. Maps & Atlases – “Solid Ground”5. Death and Vanilla – “Godspeed”6. Danish Daycare – “A Purpose To My Sins”
Edinburgh Man #16
I have a headache. Poor me. But I’ve cast the pain aside and made another podcast with some great music. There’s all-girl Argentinian punk band Las Vin Up, a great self-release track from Slow Animal, and a song by Edinburgh-based Withered Hand. 1. Las Vin Up – “Escobas y Cacerolas”2. Edinburgh Man #15
I’m not really here. I mean, I’m out watching Teenage Fanclub tonight. But I recorded this podcast a few days ago while making a chili. Even more importantly, I do it without any notes again. Tonights podcast features some great lo-fi music from B for Brontosaurus, some folk from Emilie Lund, and a fantastic piece of post-rock from Explosions in the Sky. And more! 1. Andalusian Dog – “Cursed Men Hymn”2. B for Brontosaurus – “Rock and Roll”3. Asobi Seksu – “Transparence”4. Emilie Lund – “Sad Blue Mountain”5. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin – “Sink/Let It Sway”6. Explosions In The Sky – “All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone”
Edinburgh Man #14
I’ve made notes! Yes, today I made some notes for the podcast. Whether this has improved things… Well, probably not… because I get the podcast number wrong right at the start. Emerald Park – “The Commonfield”

Starparty – “Cute Names for Dangerous Things”
Edinburgh Man #11
It’s election day in the UK, and I’m making podcast number 11 from a very echoey room. And I mean really echoey. So everything sounds a bit weird. If you can get passed that, there’s a bit of garage-rock from the Easter Island Statues, and great track from the new Male Bonding album, and the whole thing ends with a classic from Mogwai. 1. The Easter Island Statues – “Downside”2. Male Bonding – “Year’s Not Long”3. German Error Message – “Purposeful”4. Phantogram – “When I’m Small”5. Paean – “Empty Course”6. Mogwai – “Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home”
Edinburgh Man #10
It’s the big 1-0. Podcast number 10. I get a bit confused because I’m using different software, but it seems to come okay in the end. In this podcast there’s a brilliant track by the Go Away Birds from their new EP, some sweet lo-fi indie-folk from Wisdom Tooth, and a classic track from Los Campesinos! Oh and lots more. 1. Jaill – “Everyone’s Hip”2. Go Away Birds – “Those Bombs”3. Wisdom Tooth – “Make You Laugh”4. The Wave Pictures – “I Love You Like A Madman”5. More random chatter about vinyl LPs and some new and old podsafe music. Today we kick of with the title track from last years album by Portland’s The Thermals, there’s also an early track from The Go! Team that was released under creative commons. And how could we not play a track by a band named after a member of My Bloody Valentine! 1. The Thermals – “Now We Can See”2. The Go! Team – “Junior Kickstart”3. Magic Man – “Daughter”4. Evil Men Have No Songs – “Home Tonight”5. The Bilinda Butchers – “Tulips”6. Rilo Kiley – “Science Vs Romance”
Edinburgh Man #8
I play 30 mins of indie music on a sunny evening while peering out the windows looking for volcanic ash. Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love – “Mayfly”5. John Vanderslice – “Exodus Damage”

Another half hour of podsafe music. This time I have a croaky throat and just make it all up as I go along! Edinburgh Man #6
30 more minutes of podsafe indie music. Made using different hardware and software, so I’m slightly more confused than normal. No matter – for there is some great music in here. Mostly old stuff, including tracks by Ted Leo & The Pharmacists and Les Savy Fav both from 2007, and a British Sea Power track from 2008. We also come rightup to date with a brilliant track off the new Xiu Xiu album. 1. Les Savy Fav – “The Equestrian”2. Xiu Xiu – “Dear God, I Hate Myself”3. British Sea Power – “No Lucifer”4.
