1012 Epic Dentures with Ryan McCall, DDS : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
Before founding McCall Dentures, Dr Ryan McCall was a typical Midwestern boy from Effingham, IL – a small town with a population of 12,000. Growing up in close proximity to a farm, he was sure about two things: he didn't want to live in close proximity to a farm forever and he wanted to own a red Subaru Outback! After graduating from dental school, Dr. McCall opened his first office in the super dank city of Fort Collins, CO. His initial marketing tactic was a $15 hand-painted sign in the front yard. Fifteen months later, he opened another office and then foolishly spent a full year flying from Indianapolis, IN to Denver, CO running both offices. He knew there had to be a better way for himself and future dentists. 2 years later, McCall Dentures was born and the persona of 2 Chairz took flight. Today, Dr. McCall continues to be involved with the company as Executive Chairman. He is always finding ways to encourage and support others - from making charitable donations to offering leadership advice. Beyond spending time with his wife Meredith and their four children, his two favorite past times are playing video games and posting excessively on Instagram (yes, he eventually did get that red Outback!). https://www.mccalldentures.com/

1008 The Four Horsemen of Dentistry with Colin Receveur, Founder & CEO of SmartBox : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
To know SmartBox, you have to know founder and CEO Colin Receveur, the dynamo that powers this marketing machine. Even though SmartBox was incorporated in 2001, it began inside Colin during his childhood. Colin's experience helping dentists predates search engine optimization (SEO), Google, websites and even the Internet. Colin's experience goes back to when he was a 7-year-old boy helping in his father's dental office, filing records for a nickel apiece. He worked almost every day in his father's office – and spent almost every night on the family's Compaq computer (remember those?) in the early morning hours learning how to design and code websites in the Internet's infancy. Though his dad is a dentist, Colin's mom was a top sales executive with a Fortune 100 healthcare organization. So it was only natural for him to want to monetize his interest in websites. "In the 8th grade, my mom became concerned how I came into several hundred dollars monthly, and she worried I was into 'something bad,'" Colin said. "I was doing affiliate marketing, selling banner advertising space on my website and getting commission checks!" Colin's love of websites only grew from there. He launched a business designing websites for local businesses as a sophomore in high school (all while still working in his dad's practice). As a junior, he was asked to lead his high school's initiative to develop a school website. During that project, he gave several presentations to the school board. Ultimately, he combined all of his loves into SmartBox. He built his father's first website in 1997. By 2006 he had joined forces with major consultants to service their clients' patient attraction needs. SmartBox now works with more than 550 dentists on three continents. And while Colin would be crazy to have a marketing agency that doesn't market itself, SmartBox's largest source of new dentists comes from referrals and professional partnerships. "My background in dentistry, working in the office from a young age, managing my dad's and hundreds of other practices, gives me a unique perspective into what dentists really want and how to leverage the tools available to help them reach their goals," Colin said. While it's not unusual to receive an email from Colin Receveur at 5:30 in the morning, it's not just because he's a workaholic. His kids – Benjamin, Emma, and Adelyn – are early risers too, and that helps dad get an early jump on the day. When Colin's not working with clients, he's a voracious reader of non-fiction, especially books on business and marketing. But don't think Colin is all work and no play. Colin loves to scuba dive shipwrecks, collect shot glasses from everywhere he travels, and learn about World War II. Both of Colin's grandfathers served in the big one, one as a paratrooper and the other as a medic who landed on Iwo Jima. Since this makes Colin sound like he can leap tall buildings in a single bound, it's only fitting that his favorite superhero is Superman. But there is no hiding his secret identity as a man who can get you more of the patients who want faster than a speeding bullet. "Many marketing firms just get marketing. Website design firms know how to design pretty websites. SEO firms can do SEO. The problem is, when all you have is a hammer, every problem starts to look like a nail," Colin said. "As a dentist, you don't want marketing or websites or SEO, You want MORE AND BETTER PATIENTS in your chair. At SmartBox we know how to dominate your market area to make that happen." https://smartboxdentalmarketing.com/

1006 MacPractice Update with Mark Hollis, CEO : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
In 1987, Mark Hollis, a practice management consultant in New York City, began to research practice management software for several clients and friends, including a dentist and a family practitioner. Mark determined that, thanks to their ease of use, Macintosh computers would be best for his clients. He bought a Macintosh II and began looking for suitable software for his friends. A year later, after attending numerous trade shows and seeing many demos, Mark discovered HealthCare Communications, Inc. (HCC). Mark knew that their software was the one that met his criteria, and soon MediMac, DentalMac, and ChiroMac became an integral part of his practice management consultancy. Mark Hollis had continuous experience with MediMac, DentalMac, and ChiroMac marketing, sales, training and support for the next 15 years. He and his organization supported and consulted with over 600 clients in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. 20-30% of all dentists and physicians who used MediMac, DentalMac, or ChiroMac nationwide were Mark's clients, due in great measure to the superior ongoing local support he and his staff provided. During the past decades, Mark was responsible for designing and implementing a number of marketing and training initiatives for Apple Computer. For example, he authored a business plan for the Apple SBSS (Small Business Selling System) initiative creating a duplicateable reseller/developer model relationship. This model partnership leveraged the marketing and personnel strengths of each to advertise and produce over 200 Apple seminars, which Mark presented for HealthCare Communications. Mark delivered the very first vertical market seminar in the nation in an Apple Market Center. This model was followed by other HCC sales representatives throughout the US and significantly contributed to the success of HCC. At Apple's request, he developed and implemented a national training program for Apple MicroAge resellers interested in the healthcare market. He worked with an Apple Evangelist to the healthcare market to create and deliver a seminar program across the US at Apple Market Centers and SBA offices. Interested doctors who attended these activities were put in contact with local representatives. Many of Mark's sales and marketing initiatives provided the model for numerous HCC marketing programs. He was given numerous awards by HCC for his contributions and for being the top sales representative in the US. The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) requested that Mark construct and deliver a practice management course to dental students at their school, which he did for several years. Mark has also delivered several presentations at various dental and medical meetings. Mark continued to work with DentalMac customers, providing training, support, and service. He maintained a cooperative relationship with the MacHealth™ division of WebMD, and worked together with the Lincoln Nebraska staff to maintain customer satisfaction. He, along with his wife and business partner Mickey, have been steadfast in their commitment to their clients, to MediMac, DentalMac, and ChiroMac, and to the Macintosh platform. Mark found many ways to enhance what his clients were able to accomplish with MacHealth software. Mark was an Apple VAR for 12 years and participated in Apple's Science and Technology initiative. He was an Apple Product Professional, Apple Solutions Expert (ASE), a member of Apple Consultant Network (ACN), and a Macintosh Trainer for 10 years. By 2004 Mark felt the need to advance the software and support to a new level to create the next generation of Practice Management. His thinking was shared by the original programmer of MediMac, DentalMac and ChiroMac, Patrick Clyne. Together they founded MacPractice, Inc. in May 2004. https://www.macpractice.com/

984 K2 Facilitation & Dental Education with Dr. Kevin Kwiecien : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
His early curiosity around dentistry is not uncommon. His path and experience is quite unique. From the moment, he was referred to the orthodontist at eleven years old and realized that he could wear cool ties every day, he was intrigued. When he watched (suffered) as his huge "buck teeth" became a more reasonable part of his face with the help (torture) of a bionator, the dreaded head-gear, and huge uneven brackets on every tooth, he knew this was his future. It wasn't necessarily creating nice smiles that struck him. He intuitively knew that he could have a positive impact people's happiness, self-esteem and confidence (But at his young age those were not the words he would have used. He wasn't much of an accomplished reader at that time, nor did he possess a broad vocabulary). He worked in the lab of that same hometown (Reno, Nevada) orthodontist in high school and eventually managed the lab (fabricating a wide range of orthodontic appliances every day) while completing his undergraduate studies (and starting a family a bit early just to keep things interesting) until he was accepted to dental school in Oregon. His experience of the team in that practice and the intentional energy given to it laid the foundation for his future, to say the least. Once in dental school in Portland, (Oregon Health & Sciences University), he connected with the Department of Orthodontics, working on several research projects and was even published! But no, he is not an orthodontist. Crazy, right? He went back to his home town to practice dentistry, which is really where his career began to evolve in a unique way. He was an impatient associate in a practice he would purchase after a one-year associateship. He was then a young practice owner and disrespectful boss of the dentist who had owned the practice for 34 years. Yes, he has learned much the hard way, but learned he has. He focused on his team and quickly learned a new word for his vocabulary: Humility. As fate would have it, he and his family would move back to Portland, creating an opportunity for Kevin to quickly find and associate to help the transition, find a buyer for his practice, work as an associate in Portland, while looking for a new practice to purchase, all simultaneously! Yes, early in his career, he would experience almost every aspect of the dental business, a gift wrapped in unique box. The new practice in Portland had its challenges, as all practices do. This time it was a turn-key experience in a practice that needed considerable updating. Shortly after paying for (ok, financing) the improvements, it became obvious that the practice needed a better location. So, Kevin had an opportunity to experience a new building with new build-outs, new equipment, and patients that were uncertain if the drive to the new location was worth it, another gift and a weird looking package. While dealing with the crazy business side of dentistry, he was focusing on becoming a better leader, facilitator, and dentist. His many hours learning from Frank Spear, The Pankey Institute, Tucker Gold Study Club (Tom Walker), TMD Study Club (Sam Higdon), Behavioral and Occlusion Study Club (Margie Mannering and David Latz) and so many others allowed him the opportunity to create a practice with exceptional dentistry, yet always focused on his team. As some in the dental community took note of his ability to truly integrate what he was learning into his practice, he was asked to start sharing his experience in the dental school, study clubs, and several other organizations. And he loved it! Following his passion for education and facilitation, he sold his practice to pursue academia, completing a Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration (Identical coursework and pathway as the MBA Healthcare degree as a cohort), direct several clinical courses at the dental school, and direct the Faculty Dental Practice. In 2014, he was asked to join as full-time faculty at Spear Education, where he served several key roles until 2018, including Director of Spear Online, co-course-director of Facially Generated Treatment Planning Workshop, Occlusion Workshop, Dental Sleep Medicine Workshop, Exceptional Dental Team Workshop, Comprehensive Dentistry in the Digital World, Seminar, multiple Spear Online educational courses, Director of Visiting Faculty and practiced in the Faculty Practice. Kevin has practiced, learned and taught at every level. His very unique experiences and education provide him with the tools, empathy and skills to help dentists and dental teams reach appropriate goals and dreams, helping make every day in the practice a day of camaraderie, love, compassion, and empathy for each other and the patient. https://ksquaredfacilitation.com/

980 Dental Management Innovations with Patrice Bonnell & Shelly Goff : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
For more than 20 years, DMI Coaching has worked with Dentists across the country that realized, no matter how much they knew about their profession, there are a lot of areas about running a Thriving Dental Practice that they don't teach you in Dental School. There is a big difference between Knowing something and Doing something. That difference is where DMI shines. Just because you know what to do or even how to do it, doesn't guarantee you will do it. Most high-level professionals, like Dentists, know exactly what needs to happen to grow their practice, and for many, those things still aren't happening or are not happening effectively. Many of DMI's clients achieve a 40% increase in Revenue within the first year of training with their team. The secret to their success is Simple; they know how to get to the root causes of the issues holding you, your team and your practice back from True Success. Their Dynamic approach Achieves and Sustains real change and results. As part of their delivery, they work Side-By-Side with your team to provide training, standardized methodologies, customized dialogues and the coaching needed to make effective transformation happen. At the end of the day, you don't want your team to learn some things and walk away with a binder full of information they will never implement. The truly better way is when your team learns to take ownership and pride in the part they play and then they begin to perform at their peak, becoming a more Valuable Asset to you and to your patients. 969 Buy Big or Go Home with Brandon Ryff, DDS : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
Dr. Brandon Ryff grew up in Tempe Arizona, and attended the University of Arizona, where he graduated with dual degrees in Physiology from the College of Medicine, and Molecular & Cellular Biology from the College of Science. Upon graduation, Dr. Ryff then attended the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry. After Dental School, Dr. Ryff became an associate in a small group of privately owned dental practices in Arizona. Subsequently, this group was approached and acquired by a national DSO backed by private equity investors. This transition was a complex process that Dr Ryff found very interesting. Watching his father-in-law successfully serve as the President & CEO of a multibillion-dollar international corporation only further fueled Dr. Ryff's interest in business and executive leadership. Accordingly, Dr Ryff then completed a 2-year business program, earning a Professional Graduate Certificate in Strategic Management from Harvard University Extension School. Alongside completing his business program and practicing dentistry, Dr. Ryff was also appointed Vice President of Business Development within the private equity DSO group that had acquired the practice Dr. worked at. Dr. Ryff was involved in multiple acquisitions made by the DSO from 2013-2015, during which time the company ranked # 14 for the Inc 500's fastest growing companies in America. A drastic shift in executive leadership and corporate strategy at the DSO prompted a strategic transition for Dr Ryff himself. In August 2016, Dr Ryff left the corporate practice environment and acquired a private practice in Paradise Valley Arizona. During the first year, Dr Ryff applied knowledge he had gained from his tenure in business development and business school to create a unique team environment. After hearing through social media of a themed 'team-unity lunch', held in good fun to help mend wounds of the 2016 post-election divide, the Washington Post featured an article about the unique atmosphere and team at Dr. Ryff's practice. Among many factors, the leadership and management lessons Dr. Ryff acquired through his work and educational experiences contributed to a 33% growth in his new practice during the first year. Behind the scenes, Dr. Ryff negotiated improved terms with suppliers, vendors and labs with whom he had previously established positive relationships. On the front line, Dr. Ryff focused on leadership and worked to build a culture of positivity and appreciation. With the simple mission of providing clinical excellence and uncompromising service, Dr. Ryff rallied an exceptional team of focused, motivated, and accomplished professionals to take the practice to the next level. To reward their hard work and dedication, Dr Ryff also implemented a unique bonus program, which resulted in pay increases of 24%, on average, for each employee. The combined result of applied strategic management principles, his consistent focus on positive leadership, and implementing a generous employee bonus program was a 75% increase in profit dollars for his first year as owner, 2017. The journey for Dr Ryff and his team was not without some turbulence however. Months after becoming the new owner, Dr Ryff learned that his landlord had suddenly passed away, leaving the entire property to charity. A big commercial real estate developer made intentions made clear that the plan was to demolish and redevelop the property. Accordingly, Dr Ryff found a new location to continue the 60-year legacy of the practice. With the unwavering support of his loyal team and their active participation in all levels of the process, Dr Ryff and team built a brand new state-of-the-art facility, which will serve to take the practice well into the next generation. https://www.scottsdalesmile.com/
