Sarah Hartsfield has been indicted for first-degree murder in the death of her fifth husband, Joseph. He died of complications of the toxic effects of insulin. Sarah Hartsfield calls 911 after getting no response from her diabetic husband. Hartsfield had been sleeping in another room, coping with her own health issues from a recent surgery, when she says her husband's diabetes monitor went off. At the hospital, Joseph Hartsfield's sugar levels should have responded to treatment but didn't. Hospital staff found that strange and reported suspicions to the police. An investigation revealed that Hartsfield wasn't the first of Sarah Hartsfield's romantic involvements to die, and then police learn of threats to others. Sarah Hartsfield shot and killed her former fiancé David Bragg in self-defense. Police are now re-examining the case. Hartsfield has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and is being held in lieu of $4.5 million bond. One of the bombshell pieces of evidence in the Bryan Kohberger murder case is the fact that Kohberger's DNA is a "statistical match" to DNA found on a knife sheath at the scene. Investigators found the Ka-Bar knife sheath "face down and partially under both Madison's body and the comforter on the bed." A probable cause affidavit unsealed in January stated that the DNA found had been matched to Kohberger’s father. The elder Kohberger's DNA was recovered from trash outside the family home. A short tandem repeat (STR) analysis was performed to develop a profile. That profile was compared against material from Kohberger’s cheek swab. The result of the comparison is a statistical match—meaning the profile is at least 5.37 octillion times more likely to be from Kohberger rather than an unrelated random person. The prosecutors have argued for sealing information related to the use of investigative genetic genealogy. Court documents state that is needed to protect from disclosure "the names and personal information of the hundreds of innocent relatives on the family tree, the names of the publicly available genetic genealogy services used, and certain other information." Sarah, 3, and Jacob Hoggle, 2, vanished while in the custody of their mother, Catherine Hoggle. Hoggle told police she gave her kids away, but prosecutors accuse the Maryland mom of murdering them. Hoggle, who has been in a mental health facility since her arrest soon after they disappeared, indicted for their murders and moved to a jail. The search for Ricky Griffis began two days after his last contact with his mother. When Alice Mabe texted her 46-year-old son, asking if he was coming home that night, he said "no." He didn’t come home the next night either. And then he didn’t show up for work. Griffis was seen leaving an acquaintance’s place of business on July 5th. Several texts were exchanged with the acquaintance. The next day his car was found near the Coopersville strip mines. That morning, Griffis sent his family a strange text around 9 a.m. It said he was stuck in the woods, but Griffis’ cell phone was found in the vehicle, along with his wallet. The socialite charged with shoving an elderly woman to her death may be getting a plea deal. Lauren Pazienza's attorney says the woman couldn’t possess the intent to commit the crime. Defense attorney Arthur Aidala says his client was using prescription drugs, and had imbibed up to two bottles of wine, and marijuana at the time. The victim, 87-year-old Broadway singing coach Barbara Maier Gustern, fell and hit her head, after being hit by Pazienza. She was conscious directly after the incident, but fell into unconsciousness and died from her injuries five days later. Pazienza has already turned down two plea deals from prosecutors. If convicted, Pazienza faces up to 25 years behind bars. Her next court date is July 20. Murders suspect Bryan Kohberger's defense team is asking a judge to stay proceedings in the case. Attorney Anne Taylor is calling for prosecutors to disclose more materials, including the full record of the grand jury proceedings. Taylor says the information is necessary to Kohberger's defense, intended to quote, "preserve his right to contest the indictment." While Kohberger's legal team is entitled to the transcript of the grand jury, there is a question of what other information could be handed over, such as people who were subpoenaed, or anything said off the record. This is as details are released on the probability of the DNA match from the knife sheath found at the murder scene. Court documents state that DNA collected from suspect Bryan Kohberger is a ‘statistical match’ for DNA on the sheath of the knife. Kohberger’s attorney is asking a judge for more time to decide whether to offer a formal alibi for Kohberger in this case. Taylor said in a motion that the defense team had not had sufficient time to fully review the evidence provided by the prosecution. Thousands of pages of discovery, thousands of photographs, and hundreds of hours of recordings," have been provided to the defense. Idaho law lays out 10 days for a criminal defendant to reveal whether an alibi will be offered. A judge can extend that deadline. Empire co-star Jussie Smollett is out of jail while attorneys appeal his conviction for lying to police about a hate crime attack against him. Smollett began serving his 150 day sentence, but just days later the actor was released. Smollett’s attorneys arguing that he would complete the sentence by the time the process was completed. They also cited homophobic threats received by the actor in their request for emergency release. Pamela Conyers spent the night of Oct 16, in typical teenager fashion. She went to the Friday night homecoming bonfire and pep rally at Glen Burnie High School. Afterward, her mother gave her 5 dollars and the keys to the family car to run to a nearby mall to pick up shoe dye. Conyers never made it home. Just days later, a man reports to police, that he found a 1966 Dodge in an overgrown field about 100 yards off the road. It was the car Conyers was driving. Her body is found about 300 yards from the car. Conyers was lying on her side, wearing slacks and a pullover sweater, that had been turned inside out. Her underwear, her purse and the car keys are missing. Four detectives are assigned to Pamela Conyers' case full-time. More than 200 leads are checked out. 25 suspects, were picked up interrogated and then released after their alibis checked out. Clothing, dirt and soil samples vacuumed from the car were sent to the FBI crime laboratory in Washington for analysis. No leads are generated and the case goes cold. Tiffany Valiante, 18, has graduated high school and is on her way to Mercy College in New York. Standing 6 feet 2 inches tall, Valiante is a star athlete, earning a volleyball scholarship. On July 12, 2015, Valiante left her cousin's graduation party. A few hours later, the family learns Valiante has been struck and killed by a train traveling 80mph in a secluded, wooded area just four miles from her home. The death is ruled a suicide by the medical examiner. Valiante's family is fighting that ruling over many issues. First and foremost, Valiante had an intense fear of the dark, meaning there was no way she would walk more than four miles in the dark. Her shoes were found more than a mile from her body, yet her feet were clean. A rape kit was not performed on Tiffany’s body. Two murders, weeks apart. Teen cheerleader Amie Hoffman vanished after leaving her part-time job. Two days later, her body is found floating in a retention tank at a local reservoir. Hoffman has been sex assaulted and stabbed repeatedly. Twelve days later 25-year-old Deirdre O’Brien, 25, bangs on a truck driver’s door at a desolate rest stop pleading for help. She also has been stabbed. Before O’Brien dies, she describes her attacker as tall and slender with bushy hair and some facial hair. No arrest is immediately made, but the next year, 1983, a break in the case surfaces. James Koedatich calls police, describing his escape from an attacker, who stabbed him. As emergency responders take Koedatich out on a stretcher, a responding officer sees a car that matches descriptions of a vehicle spotted at the mall the night of Hoffman's disappearance and at the rest stop where O’Brien is attacked. Casey White, the Alabama inmate freed by corrections officer Vicky White, reached a plea deal in connection with his escape. White pleaded guilty to first-degree escape in exchange for no prosecution for felony murder, meaning he will not be tried for his lover’s death. Jailer Vicky White commits suicide as cops close in on her and fellow fugitive Casey White. Authorities tracked down the Alabama outlaws to a motel in Evansville, Indiana. The pair attempted to flee when they realized police had found them, which led to a chase. A released 911 call appears to contain the last words of Vicky White. As sirens screech in the background, a woman’s voice says, "Airbags are going off! Let’s get out and run! We never should have left the hotel." Dashcam video also reveals that when the vehicle rolled over, police could see that Vicky was holding a gun to her head. “She still has the gun in her hands,” one officer says in the video, “Finger’s on the trigger.” Vicky White was hospitalized and died hours later. Casey White was extradited back to Alabama, where he has been charged with MURDER. He is already facing capital murder charges in connection with the death of Connie Ridgeway in 2015.
