Laken Riley spent four years running cross-country track for her high school, River Ridge in Woodstock Georgia. Her love of running continues during her studies at the University of Georgia. After earning her undergraduate degree, Riley begins her studies to be a nurse. Riley sets out on a morning run. She grabs her phone, telling her roommate she’ll return after a half run at the UGA Campus intramural fields. When Riley doesn't return for hours, her roommate calls campus police 911 at 12:07 p.m. Less than 45 minutes later, Officers found the Riley's body behind Lake Herrick. She was unconscious, not breathing, and had visible injuries. Police arrest Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, charging him with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another. Ibarra is from Venezuela and came to the US illegally. He arrived in El Paso, Texas, with his wife and her 5-year-old son. Due to overcrowding at the center, the family is sent by bus to New York City, a week after crossing the border. They are given food and lodging, and Ibarra begins posting pictures on social media about living the high life in New York City. Ibarra is working Door Dash and Uber Eats, when he gets arrested for carrying his wife's 5-year-old son, without a helmet or protection of any kind on his scooter. Ibarra and his wife split up, and Jose Ibarra lives in Athens, Georgia with his brother Diego. Her apartment is a 5-minute walk from where the body of Laken Riley was found. Adam Montgomery has been convicted in the death of his 5-year-old daughter, Harmony. Her body has never been recovered. It only took the jury six hours of deliberation spread over two days, to hand down the verdict. Police said that “on or about Dec. 7, 2019,” Montgomery repeatedly struck 5-year-old Harmony “in the head with a closed fist.” New Hampshire police say the then 5-year-old vanished sometime between November 28 and December 10, 2019. Her disappearance was not reported for two years. The family of Harmony Montgomery says the New Hampshire Division For Children Youth and Families failed the little girl. According to Blair Miller, who adopted Harmony's younger brother, DCYF officials told him, Harmony had been reunited with her father. Miller had asked about the possibility of adopting Harmony as well. According to court documents, Kevin Montgomery, Adam's Uncle, called DCYF after he noticed Harmony had a black eye. Kevin Montgomery later told police his nephew, Adam, admitted to physically abusing Harmony. New claims have surfaced that Delphi murder victim Libby German was almost decapitated by her killer. What's more, some are questioning whether the real killer is behind bars. When the girls' bodies were first found on property owned by Ron Logan, he became a suspect. Police served search warrants on his property and took away his Ford Pickup truck for processing. Logan was also arrested at that time on a probation violation. Ron Logan claims he was not at home when the kidnapping and murders happened, but was 20 miles away buying tropical fish in Lafayette. Logan says he got home around 6:30 in the evening and neighbors asked for permission to look on the property for the girls. Logan was questioned by detectives at length, but ultimately police let him go and moved on to other potential suspects. Audrii Cunningham's body has been found along the Trinity River after water levels were lowered, allowing detectives access. Don Steven McDougal, 42, led investigators to the location earlier in the investigation. McDougal has now been charged with capital murder. Don Steven McDougal has been a person of interest since the first 24 hours of Audrii Cunningham's disappearance. He was arrested on an unrelated charge. In 2010, Don Steven McDougal was working in a local garage with Elic Bryan III. Bryan says McDougal seemed like an OK guy, until one night when McDougal had too much to drink and Bryan had to kick him out of his house. McDougal left, briefly, and came back with a knife, slashing tires and trying to stab Bryan. Bryan had to get his gun to try to run a drunk McDougal off his property, but it took police with police dogs coming out to track him down and take McDougal to jail. Don Steven McDougal admits he was supposed to take Audrii Cunningham to the bus stop but he has yet to tell investigators if she made it to the bus stop or not. Thursday afternoon, February 15, Audrii Cunningham doesn't arrive home at her usual time. Family members look for her, assuming she became distracted during the walk home from the bus stop. Panic sets in, then police are notified at 5:30 p.m. and an AMBER Alert is issued. Investigators start putting together a timeline of events. Police say Audrii was dropped off at her bus stop by her dad's friend, the man who lives behind their house, Don Steven McDougal. As investigators retrace Audrii's footsteps, they find that Audrii never made it to school. In fact, she didn't get on the bus. Investigators ask for security video, from various security cameras in the area and develop of Vehicle of Interest, a dark blue, 2003, Chevrolet Suburban. They also have a person of interest, the last person known to be with Audrii Cunningham, Don Steven McDougal. McDougal is arrested and placed in the Polk County Jail. Not for the disappearance of Audrii Cunningham, but on an unrelated aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge. The public now finds out that McDougal has a criminal record dating back to 2001. Authorities say he was convicted on a charge of enticing a child and was sentenced to 2 years. So far, investigators continue to search areas around Lake Livingston where a backpack believed to be Audrii's was found. Late afternoon, police announced the discovery of a body. Lauren Skerritt, 28, is a fantastic physical shape due to being an athlete and obstacle course racer. The Rhode Islander stops by a Greenville Panera Bread and drinks two and a half servings of Panera Bread's "Charged Lemonade". The next day, Skerritt is rushed to the Emergency room suffering from an irregular heartbeat. Skerritt is shocked when doctors diagnose her with a heart condition that can lead to stroke and other complications known as atrial fibrillation. Skerrit says her heart problem was caused by the popular beverage from Panera Bread that contains as much caffeine as three cans of Red Bull, according to a lawsuit. Skerrit's lawsuit is not the first, two other suits have already been filed against the restaurant chain over its "charged lemonade." Claud "Tex" McIver is convicted in the shooting death of his wife, Diane. That conviction has been reversed and now, the once-prominent Atlanta attorney takes a plea deal that will pave his way to a release. Georgia’s highest court ruled that the jury should have been able to consider a misdemeanor involuntary manslaughter charge. McIver has now pleaded guilty to lesser charges of involuntary manslaughter, conduct, and possession of a gun during the commission of a crime. He will receive credit for the time he’s already spent in custody. When his 6-year-old daughter becomes unresponsive, Jacob Weight calls 911. He tells dispatch one of his older children was bathing his 6-year-old when she went limp and suffered some type of seizure. First responders are met by Jacob at the door. He refuses to allow EMS into the house, telling them he must get his daughter dressed. He brings her outside where she can be seen. Police and first responders are taken aback by the conditions at the home. Trash is scattered about. Feces is smeared on the ground, and the smell of urine is very strong. The 6-year-old girl they have been called to treat is covered in open sores and KDKA reports she has extensive bruises and appears malnourished. Once the 6-year-old girl is at the hospital the full extent of her injuries is apparent. According to a medical report, her teeth are broken and rotted, and her feet are swollen. When she arrives at Uniontown Hospital, she is found to be hypothermic, with a body temperature registering at only 88.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Pennsylvania state troopers begin their investigation into the parents of the children in the house, after police note that doctors at the hospital state multiple times, that the little girl could have died as a result of the abuse and neglect. The doctors also say if she returns to her current environment she is likely to die of the abuse and neglect. During the investigation, Weight and Frost's teenage nephew, who lived with them, describes how the young girl's mother would zip-tie her hands and feet, lock her naked in a cage and refuse to wash her. Frost would also starve the little girl, not feeding her for days at a time. The floor under the cage was rotting from feces and urine that was never cleaned. WTAE reports that a 5-year-old child was interviewed and asked if anyone helped the girl clean up her poop and pee. The child responded, "They want her to eat it... my parents." Jacob William Weight, 37, and 33-year-old Mimi Ann Frost are charged with child abuse, involuntary servitude, and strangulation among several other offenses. They are accused of starving their daughter while making sure their other children and dogs, had plenty to eat. Childhood friends, Amber Shearer and Dongayla Dobson, have carried their friendship into adulthood with children of their own. At 31 years old, these two moms arrange a "No-Kids Trip" on the Carnival Cruise Ship Elation, where they will be on a 4-day cruise from Jacksonville Florida to the Bahamas. Arriving in the Bahamas, Shearer and Dobson go on an excursion called "Pirate's Cove Beach Getaway". The pair want to collect some special sea shells to take home to their children. At Pirates Cove, a resort staffer offers the women a two-for-one drink deal. The women order, but say the drinks are much stronger than expected. The moms decide to post a video to social media for friends and family, but immediately, Dongayla's mother, Frankie King, sees the video and calls her daughter. King says the moms are not acting like themselves, giggling, laughing, all over the place. King asks how much they have had to drink and Dongayla says not much, she hasn't finished her first drink yet. After drinking the cocktails, the pair sets out to look for seashells on the beach when they say they are approached by a male resort staff member who tells them he knows a good place to find shells. The staff member allegedly leads the women to an isolated area away from the main beach area. The next thing Shearer remembers is waking up in the middle of the alleged attack. Dobson says they were just conscious enough, or just aware enough, to know that their attackers were in uniforms.Two hours after Frankie King talks to her daughter, King receives a text message from her daughter, it says, "Call us now, we've been drugged and raped." A Pirates Cove Staff member finds Amanda Shearer and Dongayla Dobson unconscious in a bathroom at the resort. A nurse practitioner, Ladonna Batty, is on vacation on the same Carnival Cruise and is asked to assist the women. Shearer and Dobson know they have been assaulted and police are called. A sketch of a possible suspect in the brutal Maryland murder of Rachel Morin has now been released. DNA collected at the scene linked the suspect to another assault across the country in Los Angeles. A doorbell camera captures the suspect as the left the California home, but it didn't show the suspect's face. Working with a sketch artist, investigators interviewed the witnesses of the home invasion in Los Angeles, as well as witnesses in Maryland, especially around the Ma and Pa trail. Some new information has been released about where Rachel Morin's body was found and where investigators believe her killer was hiding. Captain Andy Lane says there are drainage culverts along the trail, but most people wouldn't notice them because they are hidden by shrubbery and trees in the summertime. Standing at the scene, there is a bend in the trail near the hidden culverts. Investigators believe the killer attacked Morin in the bend on the trail, then drug her body through the weeds, trees, and undergrowth to the culverts. That is where Rachel Morin was murdered. Mariah Thomas and her 1-month-old baby, Za'Riah, live with Mariah's parents. Za'Riah's grandparents leave for work just before 8 a.m. on Friday. After 1 p.m., Mariah Thomas calls her mother at work, hysterically screaming something is wrong with the baby. Her mother tells her to call 911. Mariah Thomas reports her baby daughter is not breathing. When Mariah Thomas' father comes home, he smells smoke and runs to the baby's crib. He sees that Baby Za'Riah looks burned. He picks her up, realizing his granddaughter is dead. Mariah Thomas says she was putting Za'Riah down for a nap and thought she put her in the crib, but accidentally put her in the oven. First responders arrive to treat what they think is an infant who isn't breathing, but instead, they find the baby with what appears to be thermal injuries on various parts of her body. She is wearing a bodysuit over a diaper, but the clothing appears to have melted onto the diaper and it appears very dirty, possibly burned on the backside. A baby blanket with significant burn marks is found in the living room. Thomas has been charged for allegedly placing her child in an oven, resulting in the death of the 1-month-old child. T'Montez Hurt is a Missouri Western State University freshman, but the 19-year-old is originally from St. Louis. On Thursday, February 1, Hurt is with a friend in Kansas City when he makes an early morning phone call to his grandmother. Tecona Donald-Sullivan says she says he isn't sounding like his normal self, he sounds as if he is scared, terrified, as if he is in some mental distress. She calls Kansas City police, who can track Hurt down and take him to Saint Luke's Hospital, but he is released after a few hours of observation. According to his grandmother, Hurt is taken by Z Trip Taxi to the Greyhound bus station. The station, however, is closed when Hurt arrives just before noon. Hurt discovers he has left his phone in the Z Trip Taxi and is seen on surveillance video trying to get back into the taxi but cannot. He starts walking, south. Treveon Isaiah Taylor, Jr., is to be the first child of Jessica Ross and Treveon Isaiah Taylor, Sr. In the early morning of July 9, Jessica Ross's water broke and she went into labor at 37 weeks gestation. At 8:40 pm, after over 10 hours of labor, she was fully dilated and her doctors told her to start pushing. It was at this point during delivery that Treveon Taylor Jr.'s shoulders got stuck. Jessica Ross and Treveon Taylor Sr. asked the doctor to perform a c-section. Dr. Tracey St. Julian reportedly continues to try and force a vaginal birth and Jessica Ross continues to push. At 9:26 pm the fetal monitor showed an abnormal fetal heartbeat and the heart rate continued to decrease for the next hour and 10 minutes. By 10:36, there is no sign of a fetal heartbeat on the monitoring strips and Dr. St. Julian preps to perform an emergency c-section. At 12:11 am the baby's body and legs are delivered by c-section, but his head is delivered vaginally. The baby is decapitated during the birth process. A popular Pasadena restaurant and nightclub has been dragged into a lawsuit filed against former General Hospital star Haley Pullos. Pullos was allegedly drunk and high on pot when she caused a near-fatal car crash. The driver Pullos hit sustained a serious injury and she is now also suing the No Comment Lounge. She claims the 25-year-old actress was moonlighting in the bar that night and the actress was plied with booze and then allowed to drive herself home. Pullos is now facing driving under the influence charges after her car flew over the dividing barrier, and into oncoming traffic. She careened off one car and collided head-on with another car, that was going about 60 mph. Police reportedly recovered marijuana edibles and alcohol from the actress’ car. Firefighters had to use "the jaws of life" to free Pullos from her car. In 1960, Lady Bird Lake was built by the city of Austin. The river-like reservoir was created as a cooling pond for Austin's then-new city power plant. The 416-acre lake is now primarily used for recreation, but many in the area are now concerned is it the hunting ground for a killer. There have been 10 deaths reported since 2022: four in 2022, five in 2023, and one in the past few days. Even though police have given no indication there are signs of foul play, social media has lit up with speculation. According to the San Antonio Current, rumors of a serial killer hunting young men and dumping their bodies in Lady Bird Lake ran rampant last April. That's when Police recovered the bodies of Jason John, Clifton Axtell, Jonathon Honey, and Christopher Hays-Clark — all between the ages of 20 and 40 and all recovered from Lady Bird Lake. Reegan Aparicio says she has no doubts that her longtime boyfriend Chris Hays-Clark was placed in Lady Bird Lake. The dental nurse says despite police assurances that there was no foul play in Hays-Clark's death, she believes he was already dead when he went into the water. That sentiment, according to DailyMail, is shared by others who have lost loved ones to the lake. Jason John’s parents also believe there is more to his disappearance and his former roommate believes he was drugged. Martin Gutierrez’s brother says he believes Martin was murdered in 2018. Despite family concerns, Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon says, "Nothing has come to light that would indicate that there is a serial killer in Austin." Jennifer Crumbley becomes the first parent in the United States to be found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for a mass school shooting committed by her son, Ethan. She was convicted of four counts of involuntary manslaughter and faces a maximum sentence of 60 years in prison. Prosecutors said Jennifer Crumbley knew her son was struggling with mental health issues. They alleged instead of getting him the help he needed, Jennifer and her husband, James Crumbley, bought Ethan the gun he later used in the attack. The prosecution also showed the Crumbleys were attempting to flee when they realized they were going to be charged with the crime. James Crumbley faces the same charges as his wife, on March 5. As the public becomes aware of Ella Jones's disappearance, the Mount Vernon Police Department receives information on a possible suspect's identity. The person was already said to be a male named "Keith" possibly. Investigators also determined that Ella Jones may have used a "RideShare" service when she left her home. RideShare services are not prevalent in Ella Jones' area, so Mount Vernon Police were able to narrow the search and locate a rideshare Jones may have used. Investigators identified a man named "Keith" who ordered a ride share for Ella and his address in South Haven Michigan. The FBI reaches out to Van Buren County Michigan Sherrif's department about a possible suspect named Keith Freerksen with an address in South Haven Michigan possibly being involved in the disappearance of a 14-year-old girl in Mt Vernon, Washington. Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott says his detectives investigated the possible suspect location and identified the car suspected of transporting the 14-year-old girl 2,000 miles from Washington to Michigan. After obtaining a search warrant, Sheriff Abbott says they waited for the suspect vehicle to return to the property before executing the search warrants. Sheriff Abbott says as the detectives watched the property, they noticed there were three homes on the property and several people were seen in the residences. The suspect was identified as one of the people in one of the residences on the property. Detectives coordinate with the local uniformed police officers in marked cars to roll in with them and execute the search warrant. Having executed the search warrant, all individuals on the property were separated so detectives could begin the interview process. The suspect immediately told detectives the 14-year-old girl was there on the property. Once the suspect was read his Miranda rights, he lawyered up and stopped talking The suspect is 30-year-old Keith Freerksen, a convicted sex offender. Sheriff Daniel Abbott says the Freerksen spoke with and groomed the victim online over an extended period before she took a ride share to the suspect's home in Michigan. Keith Freerksen was arraigned on nine charges: two counts of trafficking a minor, three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a minor, one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of accosting a child for immoral purposes, and two counts of using a computer to commit a crime. He faces up to life in prison if convicted. Early toxicology results for three friends found dead outside a Chiefs watch party, reportedly show cocaine and fentanyl in their systems. The families of David Harrington, Clayton McGeeney, and Ricky Johnson confirmed the police have the initial toxicology reports. According to a family member, who wants to remain anonymous, the level of drugs in their system is high, three times the amount of a lethal fentanyl dosage. The families confirmed to WDAF that the police have the reports and have shared some of the information with the families. Police say the case remains an ongoing death investigation. Joseph Scott Morgan and Dave Mack will tell the story of a murder and why the man convicted of the murder will be put to death in a very unique way. Kenneth Eugene Smith was convicted of the 1988 murder-for-hire of Elizabeth Sennett. Pastor Charles Sennett recruited Billy Gray Williams to kill his wife Elizabeth and Williams hired John Forrest Parker and Kenneth Eugene Smith to carry out the murder. A week after the murder the Charles Sennett confessed to his family then shot himself in the head. Williams, Parker, and Smith were arrested and charged and convicted. Williams was sentenced to life and died in prison in 2020. Parker and Smith were sentenced to death. Parker was executed by lethal injection in 2010. Smith was scheduled to be executed in November of 2022 but the execution team was unable to connect the intravenous lines before time ran out. After much debate, the state agreed not to try lethal injection again on Smith but would instead use a method of execution, Nitrogen Hypoxia. Gaylyn Morris gets convicted in the death of her boyfriend after she uses an Apple AirTag to track him to a bar. She then, repeatedly ran over him in a parking lot, killing him, in front of bystanders. Andre Smith, 26, was having drinks with another woman when Morris reportedly confronted Smith and the woman at Tilly’s Pub in Indianapolis. The ensuing argument gets all three thrown out of the pub. Once outside, witnesses say Morris got into her black Chevrolet Impala and drove forward, knocking Smith down. She then reportedly put the vehicle in reverse and drove forward over him again. Medics located Smith’s body under Morris’ car outside the bar. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Morris, 26 years old at the time, was tried for murder but was convicted only of voluntary manslaughter. Morris will spend the next 18 years in prison. Rebecca Grossman is charged with two felony counts each of second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, and one felony count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death. Chad O'Melia and Bryn Spejcher are hanging out at O'Melia's home when a roommate comes home but goes to take a shower. He starts hearing noises downstairs and when he hears the sounds of things breaking, he takes a look. The roommate sees furniture toppled, the couch is flipped over and covered in blood, and O'Melia is severely wounded. O'Melia begs for help. Bryn Spejcher has attacked Chad O'Melia in a pot-induced rage. When police arrive they find Chad O'Melia dead from over 100 stab wounds, and Bryn Spejcher crying and screaming hysterically. The bloody knife is still in her hands. As officers try to disarm her, Spejcher plunges the knife into her own neck. Officers use a Taser and several baton blows before they can disarm Spejcher finally. Bryn Spejcher is charged with murder with special allegations of using a deadly weapon, a crime involving great violence, violent conduct that indicates a danger to society, and being armed with and using a weapon in the commission of the crime. Spejcher posts bail and remains out on bail over the next 5-years of delays to allow for hearings and experts to provide studies. Prosecutors reduced the charge to involuntary manslaughter after their expert psychologist agreed with defense experts that Spejcher was suffering from cannabis-induced psychosis when she stabbed O’Melia to death. When the case finally gets to trial there is no argument about whether Bryn Spejcher killed Chad O’Melia or if her psychosis was legitimate. During the trial, the LA Times reports, a medical expert testifies that Spejcher’s behavior is the result of cannabis-induced psychosis . According to the National Library of Medicine, a diagnosis of the disorder is given when hallucinations or delusions materialize shortly after consuming cannabis. According to the VC Star, Spejcher's defense attorneys claim that their client was "involuntarily intoxicated," and that O'Melia had allegedly bullied and intimidated her into smoking the last bit of marijuana. A jury finds Bryn Spejcher guilty of involuntary manslaughter in a killing triggered by cannabis psychosis, but Ventura County Superior Court Judge David Worley announced Spejcher would be sentenced to two years probation and a suspended prison sentence of four years. There will be no new double murder trial for Alex Murdaugh, even though one juror says her vote was influenced by comments made by Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill. According to Juror Z, “She made it seem like he was already guilty.” Hill allegedly made comments such as "watch him closely" and "watch his body language." During Juror Z's testimony, she was asked by Judge Jean Toal if her verdict was based entirely on the testimony, evidence, and law presented in this case. The juror answered yes. She was also asked if she heard Becky Hill make any comment about this case before your verdict. Again Juror Z answered yes, and that the comments influenced her decision. Prosecutor Creighton Waters that in her affidavit the juror had responded "I voted guilty because I felt pressured by the other jurors." After hearing all the testimony, Judge Toal ruled that the defense did not show that Hill's improper comment or question actually influenced the juror's verdict.
