Crime Stories with Nancy Grace

The Connecticut River Valley serial killer is believed to be responsible for a string of brutal murders that occurred between 1978 and 1988 across the wooded border region of New Hampshire and Vermont. The killer targeted at least seven women, many of whom were young and found stabbed to death in remote areas.   In this episode of Zone 7, Crime Scene Investigator, Sheryl McCollum sits down with Jane Boroski, the only known survivor of the Connecticut River Valley serial killer. Attacked while seven months pregnant and left for dead after 27 stab wounds, Jane recounts the unthinkable night of her assault and the slow, painful road to healing. Amanda and Drew Bedard, Jane’s closest allies and collaborators on the Invisible Tears podcast also join the conversation. Two people were shot on the set of Alec Baldwin's movie Rust. Director of photography Halyna Hutchins died, and director Joel Souza was wounded. Reports say first assistant director David Halls picked up one of three prop guns set up by armorer Hannah Gutierrez and yelled, “cold gun.” "Cold gun" is industry slang meaning the gun does not contain live rounds. Halls gave the gun to Baldwin, who used it to rehearse a scene. According to the search warrant, Baldwin aimed the weapon at the camera when he fired, striking Hutchins and Souza. Reports suggest crew members used the weapon for target practice earlier that morning. A judge dismissed charges against Baldwin, and the actor sued. He's accused of being a serial killer, but some of his co-workers gave him a nickname, Sexy Rexy. Reportely, Rex Heuerman was the 'perfect' co-worker and 'life of the party.  Now more potential new witnesses have come forward with information connecting  Heuermann to the Long Island Serial Killer murders. One of the witnesses worked in a bank during the day and drove a taxicab at night. She signed an affidavit that she picked up Shannan Gilbert from a Sayville motel, but when she got the order from dispatch, was told the person she was picking up was so afraid she was hiding in a locked bathroom. The rider would only come out if the taxi driver flashes her lights and beeps the horn.   The cab driver says she showed up to the motel, flashed her lights, and beeped her horn but nobody came out of the motel. However, she did see "a giant man' fitting the description of Rex Heuermann come out of the motel.  When the girl finally comes out, she is crying. The driver believes this person was Shannan Gilbert Another witness claims Heuermann and his wife were swingers, and Karen Vergata took part in a party at Heuermann's home. A third potential witness contacted attorney John Ray and says she remembers being picked up by Rex Heuermann. She says he threatened her with a gun.  The fourth potential new witness claims she was a sex worker for many years, including the time the killings occurred. Logan Federico, 22, takes a break from two jobs and classes at South Piedmont Community College in Waxhaw, North Carolina, to spend a weekend visiting friends who attend USC in Columbia, South Carolina. The aspiring teacher and her friends were returning from a night out just before three a.m. The young men and women quickly disperse to their rooms, planning to sleep late Saturday morning. Unbeknownst to them, a burglar is on the prowl in the quiet neighborhood, rummaging through nearby homes. Most of the neighborhood is home to USC fraternity brothers, and with frequent late-night house parties and each roommate on a different schedule, doors are seldom locked. The burglar gains access to the neighboring home no problem—walking right through one of the doors without a sound to alert anyone of his presence. Just after 11 a.m. Saturday morning, the brothers and their visiting friends are woken with a start—a gunshot just rang out inside their home. The panicked young men and women gather in the living room, but Logan hasn’t come out of the guest room. Her friends burst through the door to check on her and find Logan unconscious, lying in a pool of blood. It appears her belongings have been ransacked. As the friends call 911 to report Logan shot, their next-door neighbor is also calling to report someone stealing his car. Still on the phone, the owner notices a shotgun is also missing from his home. Law enforcement quickly connects the dots and begins the hunt for Logan’s killer. Just a few minutes later numerous purchases are made in Lexington and Saluda County, using Logan’s debit card. Checking cameras from the businesses listed in Logan’s bank records, investigators catch their suspect on video and recognize him immediately as frequent flier Alexander Dickey. Just after midnight, the calm over the serene Montauk Yacht Club is shattered by the sounds of a man’s anguished scream. Passersby rush to a boat in the marina, where a man is standing over an unconscious woman begging for help.  Soon, the marina is filled with the sound of sirens, but the woman isn’t rushed to the hospital—first responders declare the woman dead on the scene.   After the East Hampton Town Police and first responders pronounce Martha dead, the county's Homicide Squad arrives on scene around 4am and takes over the investigation. The preliminary investigation and exam were inconclusive regarding the cause of death, and an autopsy was performed by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. Secret documents, including never-before-seen photos of Kohberger's victims, may be made public in the near future.  The process for unsealing the records is a lengthy process, and Kohberger's lawyers and the prosecutors will have two weeks to argue whether the items should be released or kept sealed. There are 43 items in the first batch, including photos of each of the deceased victims and a photograph of the six victims together. It is not clear if the pictures were taken before the attacks or after their deaths. The release of documents will not be random, as the judge says he is reviewing items for unsealing by taking the newest ones first and working backwards. Many documents on the first list are motions about what evidence jurors could be shown at trial, including what witnesses should testify and whether Kohberger could put forth his alternate suspect defense.  Other records pertain to whether items should be kept confidential or are rulings on what would be sealed. The process is expected to take months, as each batch must be reviewed before release. One of the remaining mysteries is why Kaylee's dog didn't sound an alarm. According to reports, Murphy started acting strangely in the months leading up to Kaylee's murder. Surviving roommate Bethany Funke and Kaylee's ex-boyfriend told similar stories to police about Kaylee seeing a shadowy figure behind the house when she walked Murphy. Murphy started running away from home and would run to the bushes behind the house and not return when called. A family trip to Florida took a dark turn for one British family when the father figure was accused of attempting to drown his daughter-in-law, as reported by authorities.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The public was already skeptical of the DOJ’s claims the footage from the SHU where Jeffrey Epstein was housed “clearly shows” Epstein is the only person who entered his cellblock the night of his death, a mysterious orange blob climbing the steps to L block has eviscerated all trust in their review. The Inspector General says the movement on the staircase around 10:40 pm is C.O. Tova Noel carrying inmate linens up to the L Block, but video analysis experts say it's more likely the figure was wearing orange, not carrying orange material.   According to independent reviews of the “raw” footage released by the DOJ, the video isn’t “raw” at all. At one point, a computer cursor flies across the screen, indicating the original file is a screen recording, not a DVR export. Metadata also reveals the footage was created from two different clips and edited in Adobe Premiere Pro on May 23 from 4:48 p.m. to 8:16 p.m. One of those clips was cut down 2 minutes and 53 seconds shorter than its original form, the cut coinciding with the beginning of the “missing minute,” at 11:58:58. When the footage resumes at midnight after the alleged “nightly reset,” the aspect ratio is also slightly different. The footage released from the MCC offers a limited view of the SHU common area and just a sliver of the staircase to Jeffrey Epstein’s cell block. Off camera, to the right of the staircase, is another entrance into the SHU. The correctional officers on duty report that a second locked door blocks that entrance. One of those doors is controlled remotely, while the other requires a key kept on the C.O.’s person. However, multiple people are seen entering and exiting while Tova Noel and Michael Thomas are nowhere near the door or not in the unit at all. While correctional officers admitted that Epstein was allowed to make an unmonitored phone call in the showers before he was returned to his cell at 7:40 p.m., C.O. Tova Noel claimed she left Epstein in the showers alone to use the restroom, and by the time she returned, someone else had already escorted Epstein back to his cell. However, it appears that Noel remains in the unit during the call and does personally walk Epstein back toward the staircase to cellblock L. Another female staffer left the unit shortly before Noel gave the escort and returned shortly after Epstein was allegedly safely returned to his cell. Senator Ron Wyden, the Democratic ranking member on the Senate Finance Committee, claims there is plenty to investigate from the Epstein files, including thousands of lines of Epstein’s wire transfers. Wyden points out that Epstein had to fund his sex-trafficking ring somehow and says that over the last three years, the Treasury Department has discovered 4,725 wire transfers totaling over a billion dollars flowing through just one of Epstein’s banks. They also found that Epstein had frequent dealings with a sanctioned Russian bank. Wyden claims the DOJ has financial records for Epstein and calls for them to be released to the SFC for further investigation. Authorities in western Montana are continuing their manhunt for a former U.S. Army soldier suspected in a deadly mass shooting at a small-town bar. Authorities in Tennessee are intensifying the search for 28-year-old Austin Robert Drummond, the man accused of killing four members of the same family before abandoning an infant in a remote area. A Maryland mother, once declared mentally unfit to stand trial, is now facing murder charges in the 2014 disappearance of her two young children.  In Milwaukee, a man convicted of murdering and dismembering a college student he met on a first date has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Parents of Andrew McGann's students at schools in Oklahoma and Texas say the 28-year-old suspect was a "sick pervert" and his "behavior was unusual." There were girls McGann would "tickle" at Donald Elementary School in Flower Mound, Texas. McGann would invite special girls to have lunch in his classroom while other students ate in the cafeteria. One student says McGann told her "he wished she could be his girlfriend." Parents reported McGann's behavior to Lewisville ISD and Donald Elementary staff. but "everything got swept under the rug." Parents complaints led to McGann being placed on administrative leave before his resignation letter. Parent Lindsay Polyak suggests if McGann had been terminated instead of beingt able o resign, the termination would have been on his record and might have raised some red flags for other teaching jobs. However, since he was allowed to resign, he was hired by at least two other school districts and was getting ready to start the new school year in Arkansas. McGann taught at Sand Springs until May of this year. Former student Shaelynn Brown says the black backpack shown in a picture was the same bag McGann had while he taught at Sand Springs. McGann began teaching in the 2022-2023 school year at Donald Elementary School in the Lewisville, Texas, Independent School District. The next school year, 23-24, he taught at Spring Creek Elementary with the Broken Arrow Public Schools, and then for the last school year, fall 24 to spring 25, he taught 5th grade at Spring Creek Elementary in the Sand Springs school district. For the upcoming school year, he moved schools again, this time to Arkansas, where he was preparing to begin his school year. Investigators stated that Clinton Brink, 43, was the initial victim of the attack. His wife, Cristen, 41, managed to lead their two daughters to safety before bravely heading back to support her husband. Ricky Johnson, David Harrington, and Clayton McGeeney were last seen alive on January 7, 2024, watching the final regular-season Kansas City Chiefs game at the home of their friend, Jordan Willis. Two days later, authorities found their frozen bodies outside the house. After a yearlong investigation, prosecutors charged Jordan Willis and Ivory Carson in connection with the deaths, which gained national attention. Both men face three counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of delivering a controlled substance. Police say Carson, known as "Blade Brown," supplied and sold cocaine to Willis and the victims. Investigators found Carson's DNA on a bag of fentanyl inside Willis' home. During the investigation, law enforcement initially said they did not suspect foul play. A toxicology report later confirmed that the men had cocaine, THC, and fentanyl in their systems. Police have since ruled the deaths as caused by "fentanyl and cocaine toxicity." As the case progressed, Willis moved out of the home and checked into rehab. A forensic analysis of Harrington’s phone uncovered text messages between Willis, McGeeney, Johnson, and others, linking Carson to the cocaine supply. In his 2022 memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big, Terrible Thing," Matthew Perry claimed to have been to rehab 15 times, detoxed 65 times, and spent about $7 to $9 million trying to get sober.     Two years after his near-death experience, Matthew Perry goes to a Rehab facility in Switzerland. He admitted to faking pain symptoms to get Oxycontin during COVID. He was also getting daily Ketamine infusions. Ultimately it was Ketamine that killed him.   On October 28, Matthew Perry went to his country club to play a game of Pickleball with friends. Perry returned to his home after the game and was seen by his assistant, who was leaving the house to run errands. At 4 p.m., the assistant returned home and found Perry floating face down in the heated end of the pool.  Paramedics pulled Perry out of the pool and pronounced him dead at the scene. Jasveen Sangha, known as the "Ketamine Queen,"  sold the drug involved in Matthew Perry's death.  She remains in custody.  Court documents reveal the close ties between Sangha, drug dealer Eric Fleming, and Perry's assistant Kenneth Iwamasa. Iwamasa told Fleming he "cleaned up the scene" by disposing of ketamine vials and syringes and "deleted everything." Fleming then informed Sangha that he believed they were protected since he never dealt with Perry directly, only through Iwamasa, who would be considered Perry's "enabler." Former "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett convicted of staging a hate crime attack against himself on a cold Chicago night.  Then the Illinois Supreme Court overturned Smollett's conviction. The death penalty criminal trial was approaching for the man accused of killing four Idaho college students in the middle of the night, Ethan Chapin (20), Kaylee Goncalves (21), Xana Kernodle (20), and Madison Mogen (21), when the state offered Bryan Kohberger a plea deal in exchange for the death penalty.  The plea left some family members of the Idaho college murder victims divided. Under the plea agreement, 30-year-old Kohberger agrees to plead guilty to all counts against him in the November 2022 fatal stabbings, and the death penalty would be removed. After the agreement is reached, the injuries of the victims are made known because the gag order is lifted, and the extent of their injuries left some family and members of the public outraged at the brutality of the crime. Allegedly, some family and friends now say if they had known the viciousness of the attacks, they would not have agreed with the state on giving him a plea. A teacher is arrested for the cruel double murder of a mom and dad trying to save their two young daughters from a vicious attack during a family hike on a trail in Arkansas, known as Devil’s Den State Park, ending a five-day manhunt for the alleged predator. Clinton David Brink, 43, and his wife, Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, were hiking Saturday with their 7- and 9-year-old daughters through Devil’s Den State Park when a man attacked them on the trail around 2:30 p.m., officials say. The two young girls ran to safety as they heard their mother's screams echoing; currently, both girls are with family members and suffered no physical injuries. The parents are being hailed as heroes for saving their daughters from the vicious fatal attack.  James Andrew McGann, 28, was arrested in Springdale, Arkansas, around 30 miles from the crime scene at a hair salon. getting his hair cut, possibly shaved. McGann is charged with two counts of capital murder, according to a release from the Arkansas State Police. Manhunt underway in Arkansas after a mom and dad were killed at Devil's Den State Park in front of their young daughters in broad daylight. A violent stabbing incident occurred at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, leaving multiple individuals injured. Convicted socialite Rebecca Grossman demands a venue change in a wrongful death suit trial filed against her. The parents of two young boys killed when a drunk Grossman plowed into them  is civilly suing Grossman and her former MLB star lover Scott Erickson for wrongful death.  Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Huey Cotton threw out a motion to fast-track.  The judge’s decision means that trial won't start until the original December 1 date.  Just after 7 pm, on a September evening, Jacob and Mark Iskander, their siblings, and parents go for an evening stroll to a nearby lake.   The 6 member family is crossing in a crosswalk at a three-way intersection when mother Nancy hears a speeding car barreling their way.  The mom says her husband and daughter were father away from the street. She tries to signal to the two SUVs to slow down.  She tries to pull the children back, only managing to grab 1 of them and dive out of the way.  Jacob and Mark are hit.   Mark Iskander dies at the scene. Jacob dies later at the hospital. According to police, Mark was thrown 254 feet.   Nancy Iskander tells police that two SUVs  were  "zig-zagging with each other as if they were playing or racing.”  She says the drivers didn’t stop, at the intersection, not even when the 11-year-old was on the hood of the car. Deputies reportedly catch up with a white Mercedes with significant front-end damage a third of a mile from the scene.  Behind the wheel is Rebecca Grossman.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff's department says they believe that vehicle was traveling over 80 miles an hour. Grossman’s breathalyzer test after the crash showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.076% according to local news reports. The legal limit in California is 0.08%.  A blood sample taken three hours after the crash registered at the 0.08% mark. Rebecca Grossman was charged and convicted of two felony counts each of second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, and one felony count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death.  Grossman was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. New assault claims against the Tate brothers.  Lauren Southern, a right-wing Canadian political influencer, writes in her Substack that she met Andrew Tate on a trip to Bucharest.  At 22, Southern approached Tate with a business proposition.  She says on that 2018 trip,  Tate choked and assaulted her while she was intoxicated. A 7-year-old girl is found locked in a closet, now the search is on for her 9-year-old sister, Ava Marie Gonzales. Austin police respond to a home in Del Valle after receiving a 911 call about a 7-year-old girl is discovered starved and locked inside a bedroom closet. Six other children are also found in the home, but police say it appears they are physically healthy. According to reports, the child was soiled and barricaded in a closet with heavy boxes blocking the door. An arrest affidavit reveals Virginia Marie Gonzales is accused of locking the 7-year-old girl in a closet for “weeks at a time.” The affidavit further states the girl’s grandmother told police that the child had trouble controlling her bladder and often ate things she shouldn’t. This allegedly led to her siblings being instructed to keep her locked in the closet. The 7-year-old was hospitalized and is now recovering. During the investigation, detectives learn about another child, Ava, who has been missing for years. Virginia Marie Gonzales, Ava ‘s mother, was arrested on a charge of serious injury to a child in connection with the 7-year-old’s case. Appalling new details of a 25-year-old son's disassembled body discovered by his own mom. Bryan Kohberger, an admitted quadruple murderer, stares straight-faced as grief-stricken parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends of the four slain University of Idaho students speak to the court through their victim impact statements. Kaylee Goncalves’s sister confronts Kohberger in a stunning statement that moves the courtroom to applaud. Alivea Goncalves says to Bryan Kohberger, “My sister Kaylee and her best friend Maddie were not yours to take. They were not yours to study, to stalk, or to silence. Authorities say they received a 911 call around 10 p.m. Saturday from a father who claimed his daughter, Melina, may have been abducted near Exit 22 on I-87. New York State Police said Melina and her father legally entered the U.S. on July 11 for a vacation from Canada. They were scheduled to return to Montreal on Sunday, July 20. Melina lives in another state with her mother. Her father and mother have been estranged since 2019, police said. Surveillance video shows Melina with her father in Saratoga Springs around 5:30 p.m., and she spoke with her mother on the phone around 6:30 p.m. On Sunday morning, authorities searched an area in the upstate town of Ticonderoga—near the Vermont border—where the father was believed to have been with Melina. The motive remains under investigation, officials said. Police noted that the father has no criminal record or history of domestic violence. They also said the vacation included stops in Connecticut and New York City. Attorney General Pam Bondi is facing pressure from all sides to release the Epstein files, receiving major backlash after a memo from the Justice Department and FBI contradicted promises she previously made about releasing Epstein’s list. She now claims the incriminating "client list does not exist," that Epstein did not blackmail prominent figures, and that he died by suicide. Mark Epstein, Jeffrey Epstein's brother, says he has no reason to believe his brother took his own life. Instead, he alleges that Jeffrey was murdered and points to the federal government’s lack of transparency as potential evidence of a cover-up. Metadata analysis suggests the “raw” Jeffrey Epstein prison video from the night of his death may have been modified. While there is no definitive evidence proving the footage was tampered with, growing suspicion surrounds the key minutes missing from the video—fueling even more conspiracy theories, including claims that Epstein may still be alive. An American woman claims she was raped by one of the suspects in Jocelyn Nungary's murder. She says the attack happened during a vacation to Costa Rica, and the government there did nothing.  The night Jocelyn's body was found, Billie Jean Jackson is driving past the creek near 400 West Rankin Road and sees what she thinks might be a mannequin. The image was lifelike enough to make her turn around and check it out for sure. Getting a good look, Jackson realizes, it is not a mannequin and calls 911. On Sunday night, Jocelyn Nungaray's mother, Alexis reminds her not to stay up too late as Jocelyn is going to work with her mother in the morning.  Alexis tells Jocelyn goodnight at 10 pm and turns in for the night herself.  A little later when she is certain her mother is asleep, Jocelyn sneaks out of the house and goes to a local convenience store. It is around midnight when she calls her 13-year-old boyfriend, who says he hears Jocelyn talking to some adults before he hangs up the phone.  After talking to her boyfriend, Jocelyn is seen on camera at a local 7-Eleven convenience store.  In the pictures, Jocelyn Nungaray is seen with two other people, both adults.  It's possibly the same people with whom her boyfriend overheard Jocelyn talking. Around the same time Billie Jean Jackson is calling 911, Alexis Nungaray is preparing to wake up her 5-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter, Jocelyn Nungaray. Finding Jocelyn gone, Alexis reportedly pings her daughter’s cell phone location, which traces the phone to a creek near 400 West Rankin Road Alexis Nungaray arrives at the spot where her daughter Jocelyn's phone pings and sees police tape is up and police are canvassing the area. Alexis Nungaray tells police her daughter is missing, and she is there because this is where her phone last pinged. Officers take down information from Alexis, but it still takes an hour before she receives the call that a body has been found, and it is possibly Jocelyn. Now  Harris County District Attorney's Office is seeking the death penalty  for both men. Matthew Perry wrote about his issues with addiction to alcohol and drugs. In his memoir, he said he began drinking at 14 and was an alcoholic by 18. Perry first went to rehab and completed a 28-day program at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation after a jet-ski accident led to an addiction to Vicodin. In his 2022 memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big, Terrible Thing," Perry claimed to have been to rehab 15 times, detoxed 65 times, and spent about $7 to $9 million trying to get sober.     After years of addiction, Matthew Perry spent 5-months in the hospital after his colon burst from prolonged opioid abuse. Perry says he was in surgery for seven hours and in a coma for two weeks. Doctors told his family he had a 2% chance of survival. After leaving the hospital, Perry used a colostomy bag for months.   Two years after his near-death experience, Matthew Perry goes to a Rehab facility in Switzerland. He wrote that he faked pain symptoms to get Oxycontin during COVID. He was also getting daily Ketamine infusions. While at the facility, Perry needed to have surgery and was given propofol. When he woke up 11 hours later, he found out his heart had stopped for 5 minutes and during the long CPR process 8 of his ribs were broken. The doctor then refused more meds.   On October 28, Matthew Perry went to his country club to play a game of Pickleball with friends. Perry returned to his home after the game and was seen by his assistant, who was leaving the house to run errands. At 4 p.m., the assistant returned home and found Perry floating face down in the heated end of the pool.  Paramedics pulled Perry out of the pool and pronounced him dead at the scene. Prosecutors have already implicated Jasveen Sangha, known as the "Ketamine Queen," who sold the drug involved in Matthew Perry's death. She is also connected to other customer deaths, and prosecutors believe there are likely more victims given the volume of drugs Sangha sold. Sangha remains in custody without bond in connection with Perry's death. Drug dealer Eric Fleming, who reportedly served as a program director at the Bel-Air rehab Red Door, also had a resident die of an overdose while under his watch. Court documents reveal the close ties between Sangha, Fleming, and assistant Kenneth Iwamasa. Iwamasa told Fleming he "cleaned up the scene" by disposing of ketamine vials and syringes and "deleted everything." Fleming then informed Sangha that he believed they were protected since he never dealt with Perry directly, only through Iwamasa, who would be considered Perry's "enabler." In their communications, Sangha and Fleming refer to Perry using the code name "Chandler."
