Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, the government’s star witness, took the stand today for the first day of cross-examination and faced questioning by Sean "Diddy" Combs’ $10 million defense team.  She previously spent two days detailing the alleged physical, emotional, and sexual abuse she says she endured during her decade-long relationship with the disgraced rap mogul. At the center of Combs’ defense today was the claim that Ventura was never coerced into participating in "freak offs," as she testified earlier. The defense pointed to text messages, including one Ventura sent to Combs in 2009 that read, “I’m always ready to freak off lolol.” Ventura remained composed and held her ground when confronted with the explicit messages. She testified that she eventually began to feel Combs was exploiting her. Combs’ defense team is expected to continue cross-examining Ventura through Friday morning. Casandra Ventura, known as Cassie, gives her second day of testimony as the prosecution’s key witness in the sex-trafficking trial of disgraced rap mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs. Cassie, the ex-girlfriend of the rapper, tells the court that Combs asked her to get into an inflatable pool filled with baby oil. She continues to describe the abuse she endured during events she called “freak-offs,” saying Combs later used video recordings of the encounters to blackmail her. Cassie alleges she repeatedly suffered from urinary tract infections as a result of the "freak-offs," to the point that she became immune to antibiotics. She testifies that Combs forced her to perform during her menstrual cycle and took away her possessions if she upset him in any way. Combs faces charges of racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. The 55-year-old denies all charges. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. Austin Metcalf's father says he hoped he could pray with the family of his son’s alleged killer, but ended up being escorted out of a press conference by police.  During a track meet between Memorial High School and Centennial High School in Frisco, Texas, light rain begins to fall, and athletes take cover under tents with their respective teams at Kuykendall Stadium. Memorial High School athlete Austin Metcalf finds Centennial High School athlete Karmelo Anthony under the Memorial High School tent and tells him he needs to move from under his team's tent. When Anthony refuses, words are exchanged, and Anthony tells Metcalf, "Touch me and see what happens." Centennial High School's Karmelo Anthony allegedly reaches inside his bag, grabs a knife, stabs Austin Metcalf in the chest, and runs away. As Metcalf's twin brother, Hunter, comes to his brother's aid, witnesses point out Anthony to a nearby middle school resource officer, who chases the suspect down. The school resource officer confronts Karmelo Anthony, telling him to put his hands up in the air. Anthony tells the officer, "I was protecting myself," claiming Metcalf "put his hands on" him. New claims emerge in the charges against the Florida real estate brothers,  twins Oren and Alon Alexander and their older brother Tal,  as a woman reportedly texts a friend that she feared the family of the brothers, that they would have her killed.    The Alexander brothers are accused of using their wealth and influence to create opportunities to sexually assault women. More than 40 women have come forward with allegations, and investigators are urging others who believe they were assaulted to contact authorities. Attorneys for the brothers say they plan to plead not guilty. If convicted, they face life in prison. The three brothers come from a high-profile real estate background. Tal and Oren brokered a $47 million deal for their father in 2012 and a $240 million Manhattan condo sale in 2019. Alon attended law school before joining the family's private security company, Kent Security. Each brother has been accused of forcible rape by at least 10 women. All three are indicted on federal sex trafficking charges, while Oren and Alon also face sexual battery charges in Florida. The Alexanders have denied the allegations in civil cases, with their representatives suggesting the accusers are attempting to extort them. Court documents detail accounts from alleged victims. "Victim-1" claims she was raped by Tal Alexander and other men in 2021 at a home in the Hamptons. She says she felt unwell after drinking a glass of wine, then recalled Tal holding her down as another man entered the room. She later woke up in a separate room, where a camcorder was set up. Another alleged victim, referred to as "Victim-2," told investigators that Oren raped her. She says Oren gave her a cocktail, after which she felt strange and struggled to walk. Alon then took her to a bedroom to lie down. She recalls waking up to find Oren in the room. Syracuse, New York, five underclassmen on the Westhill High School lacrosse team were excited when older teammates invited them to watch a rival school's match and get dinner at McDonald’s. After the game, while driving home, the car’s driver appeared to get lost and pulled over. Suddenly, masked attackers—armed with at least one knife and possibly a gun—emerged from a wooded area and tried to kidnap the boys. Four escaped, but the masked men captured one. Outnumbered 11 to one, the boy had his hands tied and a pillowcase placed over his head before the assailants forced him into the trunk of a car at knifepoint. The kidnappers taunted him as they drove to another secluded, wooded area and left him on the ground—alone and fearing for his life. Still bound and blindfolded, the boy heard the attackers return. He didn’t know if they planned to release him or kill him. Instead, they revealed it was a prank. The attackers were upperclassmen on the lacrosse team staging a hazing ritual. The entire incident was recorded on video. The next morning, the victim’s family reported the incident to the school, as students circulated the video and rumors of the mock kidnapping sparked a social media firestorm in the community. A school resource officer reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Office, triggering an investigation. Dr. Sanford Sherman and his wife of three decades, Aliza Sherman, are going through a contentious divorce from accusations of infidelity to money changing accounts. Aliza Sherman receives another blow when she learns her attorney is suspended and she needs to hire another attorney.  Gregory Moore of the Stafford Law Company takes over her case, and Aliza notices red flags from the start. Moore does not prepare for each court appearance, and he continues to ask for continuances,  until the judge finally says there will be no more continuances.  The day before their first day of trial, Attorney Gregory Moore texts Aliza Sherman  to come to his downtown Cleveland office to discuss the case. Standing outside the Stafford Law Company in downtown Cleveland, Aliza Sherman tells   Moore she is going back to wait in her car because it is too cold.  As Aliza Sherman walks back towards her car, she is confronted by a masked individual wearing dark clothing and gloves, the assailant circles behind Aliza then chases the 53-year-old and stabs her over 10 times. She is stabbed her face, neck, right ear, and eight times in her back. As the masked assailant leaves the scene, the mortally wounded nurse calls 911. A Columbia, Missouri, father receives a call from his teenage daughter’s high school, reporting she is absent after missing all her classes. He calls his 15-year-old several times. After receiving no answer, he rushes home from work to check on her. He hopes she simply overslept or missed the bus. But she isn’t there, and some of her belongings, including her phone, are also missing. The teen is immediately reported missing. Police believe she intentionally prepared to leave home. After searches turn up nothing and her phone remains unused since the day she vanished, investigators begin interviewing her friends. Fellow students say she may have been talking to someone online. More than four months later, police find the girl cowering naked in a closet in a Fort Collins, Colorado, home, where she had been forced to work in a snow shoveling business. Shari Franke's book, The House of My Mother: A Daughter's Quest for Freedom, details her discovery of the relationship between her mother, Ruby Franke, and business partner Jodi Hildebrandt. In her memoir, Shari says that after her mother’s arrest, she found messages on her laptop confirming the true nature of their relationship. The abuse the children endured came to light when a 12-year-old boy climbed out of a window and ran to neighbors, begging for food and water. The boy is the son of Ruby Franke, a popular blogger known for the YouTube channel 8 Passengers. The home belonged to Franke’s business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt. Neighbors called police. Officers said the boy appeared emaciated and malnourished. They also noted he had “deep lacerations from being tied up with rope” and duct tape around his wrists and ankles. After searching Hildebrandt’s home, police found Franke’s 10-year-old daughter in a similar condition. Both children were taken to a hospital. Franke’s parenting channel, 8 Passengers, which once had over 2 million followers, offered parenting advice. In one video, she admitted to withholding food as a form of punishment. After two people were shot on the set of  Rust, many predicted that the Alec Baldwin produced movie would simply remain unfinished.  Director of photography Halyna Hutchins died, and director Joel Souza was wounded. Reports say first assistant director David Halls picked up one of three prop guns set up by armorer Hannah Gutierrez and yelled, “cold gun.” "Cold gun" is industry slang meaning the gun does not contain live rounds. Halls gave the gun to Baldwin, who used it to rehearse a scene. According to the search warrant, Baldwin aimed the weapon at the camera when he fired, striking Hutchins and Souza. Reports suggest crew members used the weapon for target practice earlier that morning. A judge dismissed charges against Baldwin. The actor sued and launched a reality show. One of the first and most vocal women to speak out about Jeffrey Epstein's sexual abuse of young girls has died. Virginia Roberts Giuffre's family first announced she took her own life, but her father is asking for her death be investigated. He tells TMZ, Virginia said if she ever died by suicide, not to believe it. Giuffre's attorney told The Sun there were no signs she was contemplating suicide, saying, "There's suicide and then there’s misadventure." Four individuals connected to the Epstein abuse scandal are now dead, including Jeffery Epstein. He committed suicide in prison, but many still question if that's true. Epstein is alleged to have abused dozens of victims by causing them to engage in sex acts with him at his mansion in New York, and at his estate in Palm Beach, Florida. The victims - all underage girls at the time of the alleged conduct - were given hundreds of dollars in cash after each encounter either by Epstein, or by one of Epstein's employees.  The underage girls were initially recruited to provide Epstein with massages, and often did so nude or partially nude. These massages became increasingly sexual in nature, and would typically include one or more sex acts, as specified in the indictment. As alleged, Epstein also paid certain victims to recruit additional girls to be similarly abused. Scott Peterson was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn son, Conner, in 2003. He was sentenced to death, but the sentence was later overturned. He is now serving life in prison without parole. The Los Angeles Innocence Project has filed a petition to overturn Peterson’s conviction, citing new scientific evidence and witnesses who support his innocence. Attorneys with the Innocence Project argue that the break-in at the Medina home across the street from the Petersons’ and the subsequent arson of the burglars’ van were not properly investigated. They also allege potential Brady violations by the Modesto Police Department and the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office. The attorneys further claim that medical research has advanced since Peterson’s conviction and now indicates Conner’s fetal growth was consistent with a date of death later than prosecutors presented at trial. Wendy Williams’ guardianship battle intensified after sources alleged a judge told her she has no hope of restarting her career. Williams appeared before Judge Lisa Sokoloff, who criticized her niece, Alex Finnie, accusing her of leaking information to the media and threatening sanctions for any future conduct. Williams said she feels like she is in prison as she fights to end her court-appointed guardianship. Almost on cue, the situation escalated when Coterie, the assisted living facility where Williams lives on the fifth floor, called police and claimed Finnie had kidnapped her. According to a report Coterie filed with the NYPD, Finnie evaded staff and took Williams out to an Italian restaurant. After police were called, Williams and Finnie cited the incident as evidence of how restrictive the guardianship has allegedly become. Speaking to paparazzi outside the facility, Finnie noted that Williams’ guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, claims Williams can come and go freely and that no family visits are blocked. Finnie challenged that, pointing out that staff escorted Williams to the elevator, yet Coterie still called police. “Clearly, they are lying to me when they say I can go out and do what I want to do,” Williams told the interviewer. Williams said she can only leave the facility’s fifth-floor memory unit with permission and an attendant to unlock the elevator. This week, a judge approved an emergency petition filed by Williams’ attorney to move her from what she called a “luxury prison” to a less restrictive environment. 11:16 p.m. Saturday. Princeton police respond to a 911 call about a dead body and a fire in an apartment building. The caller remains cryptic, refusing to answer the dispatcher’s questions about who is dead, why they are dead, or who owns the apartment. Police and first responders surround the building, but nothing prepares them for what they find inside. Matthew Hertgen, 31, answers the door. Inside, officers see a bloody, unresponsive young man with blunt force and laceration injuries covering his body. He is pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators note that one of his eyes has been removed. Nearby, they find a bloody plate, fork, and knife. Officers also discover a bloody golf club and what appears to be the charred remains of a cat. The victim is identified as 26-year-old Joseph Hertgen. Matthew Hertgen is immediately arrested for the murder of his younger brother. The discovery of the bloody plate leads police to believe that, in addition to beating Joseph to death, Hertgen ate his eye. Princeton police have not disclosed a possible motive for the attack. Hertgen is also charged with animal cruelty and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The Princeton community is stunned. Residents describe Joseph’s death as devastating and tragic. A police source says no one could have foreseen such violence. Matthew Hertgen, they say, came from what appeared to be a stable, all-American family, with no signs he was capable of such brutality—especially against his own brother. As Bryan Kohberger’s trial approaches, his defense team continues to file a series of motions aimed at removing the death penalty as a possible outcome. Sources now allege that the decision to plead not guilty came at the urging of his mother, Maryann Kohberger, who reportedly believes he should fight the charges. A conviction could put him on a path toward capital punishment. In court, an Idaho judge denied Kohberger’s request to allow defense experts to testify against the prosecution’s claims about his movements and Amazon purchase history. Prosecutors say evidence shows Kohberger bought a knife and sheath online in the months leading up to the killings. Court filings also state he searched for a replacement knife after the murders. Jaclyn Diiorio, 26, a hairstylist, and her police officer boyfriend broke up after dating for nearly a year. The relationship had been contentious, with both filing protective orders. After the breakup, Diiorio began dating again and turned to Tinder. During conversations with a match, Diiorio said she wanted her ex dead and asked if he could carry it out, noting that her ex was a Philadelphia police officer. The Tinder date was a police informant and contacted county prosecutors. Detectives notified Philadelphia police, who then informed the officer and identified him as the target. The officer told investigators he met Diiorio when she cut his hair. Ellen Greenberg was found dead in her apartment by her live-in fiancé, Sam Goldberg. She had been stabbed more than 20 times in the back, neck, and torso. Her death was initially ruled a homicide, but after a closed-door meeting, officials changed the ruling to suicide. For more than 14 years, Ellen’s parents, Josh and Sandee Greenberg, have fought to overturn that decision. Now, after settling two lawsuits, the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office will reopen the investigation. The decision follows a sworn statement from a former pathologist admitting he was wrong to change the ruling from homicide to suicide. Layla Santanello, a young mother from Tennessee, was last seen on June 27, 2023, in a field next to the Americourt Hotel. Employees and guests reported that she appeared erratic and paranoid. Surveillance footage captured Layla walking around the hotel, reportedly knocking on doors and searching for someone. The events leading up to her disappearance began on June 24, three days earlier. Jennifer Santanello, Layla’s mother, received a message from Layla’s Facebook account. The message, sent by Layla’s boyfriend, asked if Layla was in jail or the hospital, saying he hadn’t seen her in more than 24 hours. Later that night, Layla messaged her mother from the same account, writing, “I’m fine mom,” and adding, “I been with a friend. I don’t have a phone to text or call. I’m using someone else’s.” About two weeks later, a series of strange Cash App requests were sent from Layla’s account to both her stepmother, Brittany Zeitler, and her mother. One request for $100 included the subject line “twlmg.” Several more requests followed in quick succession with the same subject line. Jennifer sent $1 to the account and asked if Layla was okay. As the transactions continued, she came to believe that “twlmg” meant “they won’t let me go.” Another message allegedly read, “We have Layla.
