Ep 884The Best Way To Know How Stress, Supplements, Sleep, Sex & More Affects Your Nervous System: The Latest News About Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Training

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/hrv2 Measuring your heart rate variability (also known as "HRV") is, in my opinion, one of the most valuable ways to begin your day with a brief three to five minute period of simple self-quantification that tells you exactly how stressed your nervous system is, how prepared your body is to train, and how everything from stress to supplements to sleep to sex has affected your body. So who is Jo Beth Dow? Jo Beth Dow is a cofounder, CTO and COO of SweetWater Health, LLC, a pioneer in the use of heart rate variability as a platform for remote monitoring and diagnostics. Dow has spent her career in high tech designing and producing state-of- the-art networking technology and building high tech companies. Dow entered the networking industry at its inception and has been at the forefront of networking technology development, including Gigabit Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and FDDI while working for Ungermann-Bass, Telebit, Network Peripherals, Granite Systems, Cisco and Dominet Systems. She founded and grew several technology companies where she honed her financial and operations expertise, including Granite Systems (acquired by Cisco), Dominet Systems, RedMedic (acquired by Blue Shield, and SweetWater Health). She also served as CFO for Content Rules, a content development firm specializing in high tech clients. During her five-years at Content Rules, Dow took the firm from $3M to $8.7M in revenue. Dow co-founded SweetWater Health LLC with CEO Ronda Collier in 2011. SweetWater Health is a mobile health software technology company with a platform that measures heart rate variability (a vital sign that reveals an individual’s state of health for a number of different conditions and applications) and facilitates continuous monitoring of stress levels via a patented algorithm. She is responsible for engineering development of the product, operations, finance and corporate strategy. Dow graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer sciences at Florida Atlantic University. Ep 883Nasal Glutathione, Psychedelics, Dynavision & More - The Concussion Repair Manual: A Practical Guide to Recovering from Traumatic Brain Injuries

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/concussionmanual Concussion is the biggest name in today's high-impact sports. And even if you haven't had a concussion, many people - due to brain inflammation, blood-brain barrier leakage, neurotransmitter imbalances and beyond - suffer from many of the same problematic brain issues caused by a concussion, such as brain fog, distraction, and ADHD-like symptoms (you can check out my own story about that, and how I fixed it, in this article I published after my brain scan at the Peak Brain Institute). As more and more high profile athletes come forward to share their stories of invisible suffering after head injuries, we as a culture are finally acknowledging this silent epidemic. Enter The Concussion Repair Manual: A Practical Guide to Recovering from Traumatic Brain Injuries, written by today's podcast guest, Dr. Dan Engle, as a user’s guide for those suffering after head traumas and those that support them. It is one-part “textbook,” packed with the leading research on medical technologies for healing the injured brain, and one-part “workbook,” offering a step-by-step method for making and tracking a personalized recovery regimen. Dr. Dan Engle's background and passion for concussion repair stem from a three-decade investigation into the many modalities for healing his own traumas. When the usual medical treatments didn’t help, he explored what was possible, found what worked and put them into this manual - "the best of the best" in the medical arena for recovering from sports related head injury. Dr. Engle is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology, with a clinical practice that combines aspects of regenerative medicine, orthomolecular psychiatry, integrative spirituality and peak performance methods. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas in San Antonio, his psychiatry residency degree from the University of Colorado in Denver and his Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship degree from Oregon Health and Sciences University. Currently, he is Medical Consultant to Onnit Labs in Austin, Texas, the Temple of the Way of Light Ayahuasca Center in Peru, Crossroads Ibogaine Recovery Center in Mexico and the True Rest Float Center in Tempe, Arizona. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How to get your own home float tank and the type of psychedelics or supplements to use before getting into the float tank...[12:55] -Where to purchase ketamine as a psychedelic on the Dark Web...[22:10] -The best way to go about hunting down a home hyperbaric oxygen therapy...[28:00] -What an interference field is and why Dr. Dan talks about it in the book in relation to hormones...[30:20] -How Dr. Dan performed what he calls "meditation on steroids"...[53:30] -What you can learn from the practice of ancient man using sharpened stones as medicine...[59:50] -Why glutathione is so important and how one administers it intranasally...[71:15] -And much more! Ep 882"If It Fits Your Macros", Is Clean Eating A Waste Of Time, Hex Bars, Can't-Miss Supplements & More With Mike Matthews.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/mikematthews Mike Matthews is a bestselling fitness author of books like "Bigger, Leaner, Stronger" and "Thinner, Leaner, Stronger". He is also the creator of the blog MuscleForLife.com and the supplement company Legion Athletics. His scientific approach to building muscle and losing fat has helped thousands of people build strong, lean, muscular, and healthy bodies, and his work has been featured in many popular outlets including Bodybuilding.com, Esquire, Men’s Health, Elle, and many more. Here's a small sampling of a few of Mike's core beliefs about getting into the best shape of your life: Lifting light weights for high reps is basically a waste of time. If your routine doesn’t revolve around heavy lifting, you’re doing it wrong. Getting lean, and even super lean, does NOT require hours upon hours of grueling cardio, or crash dieting that leaves you starving and miserable every day. If you know what you’re doing, you can gain 20-30 pounds of lean mass (yes, muscle) in your first year of training, regardless of your genetics. Pretty much every machine in the gym should be avoided, and most exercises are horribly ineffective. Which brings me to the next point… The idea that you have to constantly change your workout routine or your body will adapt and plateau is a lie. I change my routine once every 2-4 months and consistently get stronger month after month. You don’t have to exercise for more than 1 hour per day, 5 days per week to be in peak physical condition. I personally lift weights Monday through Friday for about 45 minutes, and do 3-4 cardio sessions per week, with each session running about 30 minutes. And I do the cardio mainly because I enjoy it. HOW MUCH you eat determines the effectiveness of your diet, not WHAT or WHEN. No matter what you’re doing with your diet, you can always work in cheats and indulgences and achieve your goals. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Mike now works out far less than what he used to, and gets better results...[10:45] -Mike's opinion on the research that high reps, low weight actually works for hypertrophy...[14:20 & 20:00] -Why both Ben and Mike like the hex bar for deadlifting...[32:50] -Why Mike says clean eating isn't the key to weight loss or muscle gain...[40:30] -The can't-miss components of Mike's morning routine...[53:50] -What Mike's diet and supplement regimen looks like, and the four supplements he always takes...[57:10] -And much more! Resources from this episode: -Mike's extensive library of books -Legion Supplements (Mike's company) -DNAfit Genetic Testing for Power vs. Endurance -Hex bar deadlift bar -Eat Wheat book Show Sponsors: -Casper - Get $50 toward any mattress purchase by visiting www.casper.com/ben and using BEN. -HealthGains - Text the word "GAIN" to 313131 to receive $250 off HealthGains' HGH, testosterone or sexual health services at their Aventura, Florida location. -BiOptimizers - Go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/biOpt to automatically get 10% off your order of Masszymes and P3-OM probiotic. Ep 881Runner's High: Marijuana's Surprising Effects On Athletic Performance (& Whether Weed Really Can Make You Better At Sports).

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/weedpodcast The recent controversial article featured on Greatist entitled "Why More Athletes Are Turning to Weed" starts like this... "It’s a typical Wednesday evening. After a long run, Andrew, who works in digital media in New York City, is following his standard post-run routine. Like most runners, he’ll quickly cool down, stretch, drink water, and maybe grab a post-workout snack. Unlike many runners, he’ll also smoke pot. The avid runner and cyclist, whose racing résumé includes the Umstead 100 Ultra, typically lights up immediately before his athletic activities and usually within an hour or two post-sweat session. Andrew isn’t alone in his habit—in fact, combining cannabis and sport has become an underground trend in distance-running culture. Ultra runners such as Avery Collins and Jen Shelton have admitted to running under the influence of marijuana. And former professional runner Chris Barnicle, a cannabis advocate living in Los Angeles, calls himself the “world’s fastest stoner” on Twitter. Pro-cannabis running groups, like Run on Grass in Denver, are dedicated to staying fit and educating others about cannabis, while online communities like Cannafit and NORML Athletics also promote cannabis' association with healthy living. And it's not just runners who are experimenting with weed. Bodybuilders may hit a bong to prevent soreness and sleep better, while action sports athletes such as mountain bikers, skiers, and snowboarders may light up on the lift to get in the zone, loosen up, or release their inhibitions. Even some athletes participating in niche sports such as skeleton, bobsledding, and ice hockey toke up." Last year, in my own article The Effect Of Weed On Exercise: Is Marijuana A Performance-Enhancing Drug?, I delved into whether THC, CBD, or other ingredients in marijuana actually enhance athletic performance on a molecular level. Then, just a few months ago, USA Today reported on the world's first "marijuana gym", describing a San Francisco gym called "Power Plant Fitness", where clients have the option to bring their own cannabis or order edibles, the gym’s preferred form of cannabis, while they are at the gym. A delivery service brings desired edibles to the gym within 15 minutes after clients place orders, and the gym has a designated space for those inhaling marijuana. The gym, which advertises itself as the world's first cannabis gym, touts using the drug for pain, focus and meditation. With the growing popularity of the combination of cannabis and sport, I decided it was high time to get an industry leader on the podcast to take a deep dive into whether weed really helps with exercise performance, and the current state of marijuana in the sporting industry. So my guest on this podcast is Tim Moxey, owner of botanicaSEATTLE, Tim Moxey and botanicaSEATTLE maks some of the best tasting and, in my opinion, healthiest marijuana and hemp based edibles that exist. Take, for example, the label of one of my favorite products that they produce, a tiny Altoid sized product called "Moxeys Mints", which are infused with ginkgo leaf, siberian ginseng, indian gooseberry, echinacea root, chamomile, california poppy, cinnamon, peppermint, ginger and more. Born in the Pacific Northwest, Moxey's Mints are crafted in small batches to promote wellbeing in mind and body. Each pastille is formulated with herbal synergists tailored to elevate the cannabis experience. Moxey’s herbal allies can brighten your day with Siberian Ginseng and Gingko, lower stress and allow you to kick back with California Poppy and Camomile and restore and maintain balance in mind and body with Indian Gooseberry and Echinacea. So how did Tim come up with all these ideas that spawned an enormously successful edibles company? After studying Physics at Warwick Uni, Tim joined British investment bank Barclays de Zoete Wedd, with roles on the derivatives, risk and strategy teams before getting an MBA from Dartmouth’s Tuck School in 2001. After a stint in the Australian division of strategic management consulting firm, Bain and Company, Tim left to build specialist triathlon wetsuit company ‘blueseventy’ into the leading brand in the sport. He then went on to found ‘nuun’, a pioneering hydration company which spawned a new category in sports nutrition. In 2012 Tim was living in the U.K. when he read an article in ‘The Economist’ about Washington State voting to legalize cannabis. It had a profound effect and he was convinced that the socioeconomic benefits from a legal framework far outweighed the prohibition model. He promptly relocated to the US to build a company that would set the standard in a regulated environment. Tim currently runs botanicaSEATTLE with co-founder Chris Abbott. botanicaSEATTLE (www.botanicaseattle.com) is now the leading edibles company in the most developed legal market in the world and is committed to creating innovative micro-dose products that focus on quality and responsibil

Ep 879The Plant Paradox: Are Lectins *Really* That Harmful Or Is Dr. Steven Gundry Wrong?

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/gundry Grains of all kinds, especially whole grain wheat. Corn. Tomatoes. Potatoes. Beans and legumes, particularly soy. Just about all nuts, especially cashews and peanuts. Zucchini, bell peppers, eggplant and pickles. And yes, even our dear friend the avocado. Each of these foods has one thing in common - a food component that today's podcast guest, Dr. Steven Gundry, claims may responsible for some of the world's most pressing health issues, from obesity to heart disease. In Dr. Gundry's new book The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in "Healthy" Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain", he highlights exactly what that foood component is. Dr. Gundry is a renowned cardiologist, New York Times best-selling author and medical researcher. During his 40-year career in medicine, he has performed over 10,000 heart surgeries and developed multiple life-saving medical technologies, including patenting nine cardiac surgery devices. He is a cum laude graduate of Yale University with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. After graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Dr. Gundry completed residencies in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan and served as a Clinical Associate at the National Institutes of Health. There, he invented devices that reverse the cell death seen in acute heart attacks; variations of these devices subsequently became the Gundry™ Retrograde Cardioplegia Cannula. It has become the world’s most widely used device of its kind to protect the heart from damage during open-heart surgery. After completing a fellowship in congenital heart surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, in London, Dr. Gundry was recruited as Professor and Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. There, he and his partner, Leonard Bailey, pioneered infant and pediatric heart transplantation. Together, they have performed more such transplants than any other surgeons in the world. During his tenure at Loma Linda, Dr. Gundry pioneered the field of xenotransplantation, the study of how the genes of one species react to the transplanted heart of a foreign species. He was one of the original twenty investigators of the first FDA-approved implantable left ventricular assist device (a kind of artificial heart). Dr. Gundry is also the inventor of the Gundry Ministernomy, the widely used minimally invasive approach to aortic- or mitral-valve repair, the Gundry Lateral Tunnel, a “living” tissue that can rebuild parts of the heart in children with severe congenital heart malformations; and the Skoosh™ venous cannula, the most widely used cannula in minimally invasive heart operations. One of the fathers of robotic surgery, as a consultant to Computer Motion (now Intuitive Surgical), Dr. Gundry received early FDA approval to use robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery for coronary artery-bypass and mitral-valve operations. He holds patents on devices for connecting blood vessels and coronary artery bypasses without sutures, as well as for repairing the mitral valve without the need for sutures or a heart-lung machine. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASIAO), and was a founding board member and treasurer of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS). He recently completed two successive elected terms as President of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Desert Division. Dr. Gundry has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the American Surgical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of numerous other surgical and medical societies. He is also the author of more than three hundred articles, chapters, and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals on surgical, immunology, genetic, nutrition, and lipid investigations. He has operated in more than thirty countries, including charitable missions to China, India, and Zimbabwe. Inspired by the stunning reversal of coronary artery disease in an “inoperable” patient, using a combination of dietary changes and nutriceutical supplements, in 2001, Dr. Gundry changed the path of his career. An obese, chronic “diet” failure himself, he adapted his undergraduate Yale University thesis to design a diet based on evolutionary genetic coding, which enabled him to reverse his own medical problems. In the process, he effortlessly lost 70 pounds. The equally astonishing results from following what he came to call Diet Evolution in several of his staff led Dr. Gundry to accept a position in Palm Springs where he could devote his efforts to disease reversal. No longer satisfied with repairing the damage of chronic diseases, since 2002, Dr. Gundry founded and has served as Medical Director of The Interna

Those athletes who have been involved with this process all gather around, we walk over to a central space in the room, and we begin a practice that has been performed for thousands of years. Chris Holder is the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Cal Poly in beautiful San Luis Obispo, California. Along with working with 22 Division I athletic teams and over 500 student-athletes, Chris is a Doctor of Medical Qigong (DMQ-China). Under the tutelage of world famous Qigong Grand Master Dr. Jerry Alan Johnson, Dr. Holder conducted groundbreaking research on the effects of Medical Qigong Therapy with athletes in competition, the first of its kind. With the blending of western strength training practices and eastern medical and spiritual practices, Chris co-authored a study investigating the effects of a daily Qigong practice on strength gains in collegiate aged athletes. These two pieces have spawned additional studies that are currently in progress. The first is investigating the effects of Qigong on flow induction. The second could be one of the most important studies in concussion research. Both are showing tremendous benefits to each area of study. Chris is one of only 13 Master RKC’s in the world and is known in many strength training circles as one of the first to introduce kettlebell training to collegiate athletics. Ep 877Part 2: The Official Q&A On How To Cure Yourself Of Cancer - An Epic Interview With A Man Who Defied Conventional Medicine & Cured Himself Of Prostate Cancer.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/cancerfaq This is a special Premium audio episode. Click here to activate a Premium subscription to the BenGreenfieldFitness show and access this and over 300 additional hidden audios, videos, pdf's and more! The podcast episode "How To Cure Yourself Of Cancer: An Epic Interview With A Man Who Defied Conventional Medicine & Cured Himself Of Prostate Cancer." was one of the most popular and comment-filled episodes that I've ever released on alternative methods of healing cancer. It was so popular, in fact, that I decided to approach Eric Remesperger, my guest on that episode, and propose that he address the host of comments and questions that materialized after that original show. He was kind enough to do so, and in today's special Premium episode (available as a part of 300+ additional special episodes, videos and pdf's you can access here), Eric delves into the following: [00:00] Introduction [01:57] Coffee Enemas [05:39] Using Nystatin [08:10] Wim Hof’s Breathing Techniques [12:38] Emotional Blockages [15:44] The Budwig Protocol [21:21] Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide [23:37] Acupunture [24:24] Sulforaphane [26:56] DCA [30:47] Laetrile [33:52] High Dose Vitamin C [40:26] Children With Cancer [43:19] Fitting In With The Regimen In Your Everyday Life [46:23] Cancer and Lymph Node Removal [48:08] Eric’s Diet [57:58] End of Podcast Introduction: Thank you, Ben. The questions posed will include the following: a discussion on coffee enemas, the use of Nystatin as an anti-fungal agent, Wim Hof breathing techniques and oxygenation at a cellular and tissue level, the Budwig Protocol, sulforaphane, Laetrile or vitamin B17, high-dose vitamin C, and balancing oxidative therapies with antioxidants. But before I begin, I have to make my usual disclaimer. I'm not a doctor and I don't give medical advice. I make no recommendations. All I’ve done is looked at the data, and as an attorney I kind of applied my own kind of skill set to looking at evidence, and come to my own conclusions. And I'm sharing information with you so that you can have the same perspective that I came to when you're trying to sort through and make your own decisions. Let me also mention that in the process of coming to my own theories and conclusions, I've formed what I consider to be some foundational elements for moving back from a cancering state to a healing state over and above kind of nutrition and supplementation, which obviously a lot of us spend a lot of time focusing on nutrition and supplementation, but these other elements include, there's really four of them that I kind of list down here: one is oxygenation of the cells and tissues, number two is proper cellular communication because in my view all we are are our bags of cells, and cancer are cells that are not functioning the way they should within that community of cells. And so we do really need to kind of focus on proper communication between the cells. Detoxification, which includes physical, environmental, and emotional, and energetic wellness. Those are kind of the four underlying foundational elements for all of the protocols and the pillars that you'll see if you go on my site. So let's go ahead and get started. Coffee Enemas The first question I'm going to address comes from Kathy. Kathy's concerned about whether or not coffee enemas might be contraindicated for her because she had several lymph nodes removed as part of a treatment for cervical cancer, and she asks whether she should be concerned about doing enemas without lymph nodes. And I think before answering that question, it might be useful to talk a little bit about coffee enemas generally. Let me mentioned for those of you who haven't already seen it that Ben has a great blog post on coffee enemas entitled "The Bulletproof Coffee Enema: Everything You've Always Wanted To Know About Coffee Enemas But Were Afraid To Ask". On that blog post, he goes not only into kind of how to do an enema, but why they do an enema and that sort of thing. So if you haven't or are not familiar with doing coffee enemas, I highly recommend that as a good source to go to. But just kind of briefly, enemas are traditionally done to clean out the bowels of your colon. Coffee enema, although this is an enema, it's quite different, it's done to help the liver do its job of detoxification. As we all know, the liver is not just a detoxifier, it's the ultimate multi-tasker. It does everything from converting protein into glucose, storing vitamins and nutrients, regulating hormones, making bile, et cetera. When a coffee enema is done, the caffeine from the coffee is absorbed into the system, where it goes into the liver and acts as a detoxifier. It works there because there are these entrohepatic circulatory veins that carry toxins from the sigmoid colon to the liver for the detoxification process to run. Coffee enemas also cause the liver to produce more bile, which as you probably know is stored in the gallbladder. And

Ep 874How "Machine Learning" Can Predict Your Blood, Urine, Stool, Saliva & More!

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/machinelearning I recently took a test that uses machine learning to predict biochemical test results (like blood, urine and stool) - a test called the "Elite Performance Analysis (EPA) tool". Over the last three years, the folks at Nourish Balance Thrive (Dr. Tommy Wood and Chris Kelly, both former podcast guests) who designed this test have worked with over 1,000 athletes, averaging over 100 biochemical markers collected per athlete, including: -Blood biochemistry -Urine tests (DUTCH and organic acids) -Stool tests (PCR and culture) -Subjective quality of life questions (a Health Assessment Questionnaire, or HAQ), scored on an analog scale (1-5) As well as working to optimize the performance of athletes at every level, another goal of Nourish Balance Thrive is to give more people access to the type of work they do by increasing speed of access and reducing cost. Machine learning provides for a very good way to do this. By training an algorithm based on historical HAQ and biochemical test data, they can predict five common patterns of performance killers that they regularly see in their clients, including: 1. Blood sugar dysregulation (high/low fasting blood sugar and HbA1c, or high fasting insulin) 2. Low sex hormones (testosterone in men and oestrogen in women) 3. Suboptimal hemoglobin (“low oxygen deliverability”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ep 873How To Use Boxing, Sparring & Fighting To Turn Your Body Into The Ultimate Fitness Weapon.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/boxing The last few times I've visited LA, I've had the privilege of getting my butt kicked in boxing and sparring with an English former professional boxer who won a bronze medal in the 2008 Summer Olympics, was a 7 time national champion boxer, and was undefeated in the sport all the way up to his 2012 retirement. His name is Tony Jeffries, and in this episode, you get to tune in as Tony descends upon my home in Spokane, WA to podcast in my own backyard - just after our sparring session in my basement and workout on my home obstacle course. Originally from Sunderland, England, Tony Jeffries moved to Los Angeles, California after being forced to retire from his career as professional boxer due to hand injuries. It was in LA that Tony met business partner, Kevan Watson. The pair started teaching boxing classes on Santa Monica Beach for which demand grew so much that the two are now proud owners of two of Southern California’s most prestige boxing gyms, Box ‘N Burn. Ranked number 1 gym in California by Men’s Fitness Magazine and named number 1 boxing class in LA by Time Out magazine, Box ‘N Burn provides clients – which for Tony, now includes the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Travis Barker, Tim Tebow and singer/songwriter Skyler Grey – with a highly effective, unique workout, teaching them real boxing technique through 1-on-1 mitt work. World-class athlete turned businessman, Tony, is also co-creator of the Box ‘N Burn Academy – the world’s number 1 boxing fitness and certification course for Personal Trainers and fitness enthusiasts. Tony shares his motivation and passion for both business and boxing through his weekly Box ‘N Life podcast. Hosted with Head Trainer of Box ‘N Burn Santa Monica, Glenn Holmes, the two have featured notable names from the worlds of business, fighting, and the arts on the show, including Gary Vaynerchuck, Dan Pena, Chris Shifflet and Brendan Schaub to name a few! During our discussion, you'll discover: -What Tony thinks about the upcoming Connor Mcgregor vs. Floyd Mayweather fight...[8:10] -How common TBI's are and if Tony has had to deal with concussions/concussion repair...[13:50] -What the training regimen of a professional boxer looks like...[21:20] -What the physiological requirements of boxing are...[33:00] -How the box n' burn sessions work...[36:15] -Tony's recommendations to anybody who wants to step into the ring and fight...[43:00] -What got Tony into boxing in the first place...[47:10] -How Tony came to be undefeated...[48:10] Resources from this episode: -Tony's Box n' Burn gyms -Box n' Burn academy -Teloyears podcast -Concussion Repair Manual by Dr. Dan Engle -Peak Brain Institute -Professor In The Cage book Show Sponsors: -Four Sigmatic - Go to FourSigmatic.com/Greenfield and use couple code "BENGREENFIELD" for 15% off. -HealthGains - Text the word "GAIN" to 313131 for $250 off any HealthGains treatment. -Antrantil - For all of your Bloating, SIBO, IBS, Leaky Gut issues, go to LoveMyTummy.com/Ben. Ep 872The Kratom User's Guide: What Is Kratom, How Do You Use It & The Truth Behind This Controversial Natural Herb.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/chrisbell From relaxation, to quelling appetite, to killing pain, I've recently been using an herb called "Kratom" (ever since I injured my back several months ago and I needed something other than an opioid based painkiller to stop the discomfort and allow me to sleep and engage in my normal day-to-day function). When I first used Kratom, I felt the effects within minutes - and also experienced a pleasant euphoria, and even a drop in appetite, with none of the side effects of a painkiller and none of the psychosis of something like marijuana. Advocates say the herb kratom offers relief from pain, depression, and anxiety. Scientists say it may hold the key to treating chronic pain and may even be a tool to combat addiction to opioid medications. But the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is now trying to ban this potent herb, citing an “imminent hazard to public safety.” So is kratom safe? Addictive? How do you use it? What are the different strains? What else can kratom be used for? In today's podcast with Chris Bell, you'll discover the answers to all these questions and much more. This is a must listen, in my opinion, especially since President Trump just declared the opioid crisis in America a "national emergency". Chris "Boar" Bell is an American director, producer and writer, known for his documentaries Bigger, Stronger, Faster and Trophy Kids and Prescription Thugs. He is the brother of Mark Bell and Mike Bell, both of whom were featured in Bigger, Stronger, Faster. In 1997, Bell obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Film Production from the University of Southern California. He currently resides in California, where founded his film production company Bigger Stronger Faster Inc, which is devoted to producing educational documentaries, films, and TV shows... ...Chris also happens to be an expert in all things kratom, and even claims in this video that kratom is "the cure for the opioid epidemic". During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Chris went from being in intense pain 24-7 to nearly destroying his stomach with ibuprofen and advil to being completely addicted to opioid based painkillers...[8:55] -How Chris originally discovered kratom...[20:50] -What kratom is and where it comes from...[23:45 & 25:00] -How you feel when you take kratom...[26:05] -The difference between the different kratom strains, like red, white and green...[27:25] -Whether kratom is safe on the organs...[31:15] -Where Ben and Chris get their kratom...[38:20 & 40:45] -Whether kratom is addictive or habit-forming...[42:15] -If kratom is banned by WADA or USADA...[47:10] -Whether kratom can be combined with anything to enhance its effects...[50:50, 52:50 & 54:00] -How long kratom takes to "hit your system" and how long it lasts...[59:25] -The new kratom documentary Chris is working on...[60:30] -And much more... Ep 868Are Chiropractors Really Bullsh*t?

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/chiro Last week, podcaster and comedian Joe Rogan interviewed (click here to watch or listen) a woman who calls herself the "SciBabe" (Yvette d'Entremont) about her juicy, controversial, attention-grabbing article on The Outline entitled "Chiropractors Are Bullshit". Now don't get me wrong - Yvette has some interesting ideas and I appreciate both her willingness to question some of the more radical aspects of alternative medicine and potential quackery, as well as her ability to keep us all on our feet and wary of being duped by ineffective therapies. She's even been a podcast guest on my episode "Is The Food Babe Really Full Of Sh*t?". At the same time, I see a chiropractor regularly. Some of my dear friends are chiropractors. From sacroiliac joint issues to neck pain to digestive problems, chiropractors have fixed my body many a time. So I wanted to give someone from the chiropractor community a chance to speak up on the actual science and evidence-based research of chiropractic medicine. Enter Dr. Jason Jaeger, DC, FCBP. Jason is a chiropractic physician at Advanced Spine & Posture in Las Vegas. He has practiced since 1999 and has been a chiropractic physician in Las Vegas since 2001 where he has brought his passion for health and wellness to the community that he and his family have called home since the late 1940’s. He is the Administrative Director of Aliante Integrated Physical Medicine, one of Nevada’s leading integrated physical medicine practices. Dr. Jaeger is one of only approximately 1000 chiropractors around the world trained in Chiropractic BioPhysics®, a technique which corrects and restores the spine back to alignment, and one of only 19 instructors for the CBP technique. Dr. Jaeger is also Board Certified in Nevada in CBP®. He is the developer of the Universal Tractioning System (UTS) and received the “2014 Researcher of the Year” award for the Advancement of Chiropractic Science at the Annual Chiropractic BioPhysics® Research Symposium held in New York City. Dr. Jaeger attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) during his undergraduate program and graduate school at Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS). As class representative and Student American Chiropractic Association Vice President SCUHS chapter, he successfully lobbied in Washington D.C. for such issues as Medicare and HMO reform. Dr. Jaeger participated in a rotation through Cal State Northridge’s prestigious Physical Therapy program where he successfully integrated neuro-musculoskelatal therapies on paralysis and stroke victims. Dr. Jaeger currently holds adjunct faculty positions at Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier, CA; Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, KS; Parker University in Dallas, TX; and Palmer Chiropractic University in Davenport, IA. He is the Secretary of the International Chiropractic Association’s (ICA) Research and Guidelines committee (FACTS). Dr. Jaeger is a professional speaker and has lectured throughout the United States, Europe and Australia on spinal biomechanics, research and the clinical work he has performed. He is a published author in the peer-reviewed literature on clinical biomechanics. Dr. Jaeger is a literature-reviewing doctor for the International Chiropractic Association’s Best Practices Guidelines, a guideline recognized & accepted federally by the National Clearinghouse of Guidelines. He is a past board member for the Nevada Chiropractic Association (NCA), is a current board member for the Nevada Chiropractic Council (NCC) and has been deemed an expert by the courts in the State of Nevada. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What Jason thinks of Yvette's statement that "little more than the buffoonery of a 19th-century lunatic who derived most of his medical theory from séances"...[8:00] -Whether those in chiropractic medicine actually respect Daniel David Palmer, founder of chiropractic medicine...[11:42] -Whether it is true that "The defining principle of chiropractic is that health is a state that can be either maintained or lost due to vertebral subluxations"...[13:30] -The type of chiropractic care Jason practices, and the difference between evidence based chiropractic care and "quacks"...[22:40] -What Jason's schooling looked like, and whether it is true that 100% of chiropractic docs graduate from their institution...[26:20] -How big of a problem is "quackery" in chiropractic care, and Jason's thoughts on some of the people Yvette discusses in her article, like Josh Axe, Billy Demoss, and Eric Berg...[30:40] -Where medicine and supplements fit into Jason's practice, and whether his supplements are regulated...[41:00 & 45:50] -What Jason thinks about infant chiropractic care...[47:00] -How you can know if you're getting a "good" vs. a "bad" chiropractic doc...[52:05] -And much more! Ep 867The Power of Gratitude

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/owen There is one emotion, above all, that elicits a release of the powerful feel-good hormone oxytocin, along with serotonin and dopamine. And promotes better sleep. And lower blood pressure. And decreased inflammation. And fewer aches and pains. Better relationships. Increased longevity. The list goes on and on. That emotion is gratitude. And my guest on today's podcast specialized in teaching gratitude, gratitude implementation and daily gratitude practice strategies and tactics to teachers, educators and children. His name is Owen Griffith, and he is a university level Student Mentor who supports and guides future teachers. Owen taught as an elementary educator for over a decade. Owen's first book, Gratitude: A Way Of Teaching, was published by Rowman & Littlefield and was a Top Ten Best Seller in April, 2016. This valuable book gives educators solution-based methods and research-based resources to improve classroom culture, as well as enabling schools to elevate students’ engagement and academic achievement. Grounded in scientific research, it delves into numerous integral aspects of gratitude as it relates to education. It features success stories and step-by-step instructions to successfully implement gratitude in schools. You will discover how to combat materialism and entitlement with gratitude and altruism, how to help teenagers utilize gratitude successfully, as well as encouraging the entire families of our students to embrace gratitude and make it a permanent part of their lives. He is a regular contributor to Huffington Post and his work has appeared on Edutopia and U. C. Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center’s online magazine. He earned a Master's Degree from Kennesaw State University in Educational Leadership. He is available for consulting, speaking engagements and to lead professional development in a variety of areas. He resides with his wife and son in North Georgia. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The important difference between having an attitude of gratitude and positive thinking...[8:00] -The surprising physical and physiological benefits of gratitude, including the idea of neuroplasticity, cardiac medicine and much more...[13:10 & 19:25] -The best way to pull yourself or your kids out of the vicious cycle of materialism...[24:40] -How gratitude can be used to decrease technology and smartphone addiction...[31:05] -Why Owen says that "gratitude works like a muscle", and how your brain actually changes and becomes rewired as you practice gratitude...[35:30] -The fascinating link between mindfulness, silence and gratitude...[43:00] -The best way to establish a daily gratitude practice for children vs. teens vs. adults...[49:10 & 53:50] -Owen's favorite resources, books and podcasts for learning more about gratefulness...[60:20] -And much more! Ep 866How To Take Matters Into Your Own Hands With JJ Virgin

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/miracle JJ Virgin is one intimidating, yet amazing, woman. Seriously. I've had a chance to hang with JJ on numerous occasions over the past several years, and, at over 6 feet tall, strikingly beautiful, fit, muscular and with a sharp, keen intelligence and wit, she's one of those women who probably would have been a queen or, perhaps, an Amazonian warrior were she born at some other time in history. But, in fact, JJ is actually a celebrity nutrition and fitness expert and author of 4 New York Times bestselling books: The Virgin Diet, The Virgin Diet Cookbook, JJ Virgin’s Sugar Impact Diet, and JJ Virgin’s Sugar Impact Diet Cookbook. But her recent memoir, Miracle Mindset: A Mother, Her Son, and Life’s Hardest Lessons, in which she explores the powerful lessons in strength and positivity that she learned after her son Grant was the victim of a brutal hit-and-run accident, is perhaps the most meaningful and life-changing of all her titles. One of my biggest takeaways from the book was the enormous number of frustrations that JJ encountered while attempting to navigate the modern medical system, and to keep her son from dying, not recovering properly, or being seriously harmed by modern medicine, along with her extreme willingness and stubbornness in incorporating every aspect of alternative health and natural medicine into a modern hospital setting...with shocking results. If you want to be fully equipped to deal with any trauma that might land you in a modern hospital industry or having to deal with close-minded physicians and caretakers, this podcast is a must-listen for you. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The shocking story of the hit-and-run with Grant...[8:50] -The biggest frustrations JJ ran into at the hospital, and with Grant's physicians and nurses...[19:05] -How JJ got 10-20 grams of fish oil each day into Grant...[25:10] -What JJ did with essential oils...[29:20] -Why JJ would rub progesterone cream into Grant over and over again during his recovery...[31:20] -The superpowered smoothies JJ gave to Grant when his feeding tubes came out...[45:00] -How JJ used stem cell harvesting and stem cell IV's in Grant's therapy...[51:20] -The advanced biohack therapies JJ has used in combination with physical therapy, from ping pong to earthing, grounding, gardening, neurofeedback and more...[59:20] -For people who wind up being in the modern medical system having to deal with the trauma, where you can find the biggest pieces of advice from JJ...[64:55] -And much more! Resources from this episode: -Miracle Mindset: A Mother, Her Son, and Life’s Hardest Lessons -When Brains Collide: What Every Athlete and Parent Should Know About the Prevention and Treatment of Concussions and Head Injuries -The Biology of Belief -Lavender essential oils -My podcast interview with Dr. Kirk Parsley -The NatureCBD blend Ben uses every day -Stem Cell Revolution -Neurofeedback -GrantVirgin.com Show Sponsors: -Quip - Quip is an electric toothbrush that packs premium vibration and timer features into an ultra slim design, that's half the cost of bulkier brushes. Ep 865The Reebok Crossfit Games, Half-Ironman Nutrition, Elite Athlete Diets & More: A Conversation With The WHOOP Team

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/whoop2 In the podcast episode WHOOP: The Performance Enhancing Wearable That Tells You When To Sleep, How To Exercise, Your Strain Levels & More!, I introduce you to Will Ahmed, CEO of WHOOP, the first scientifically-grounded, self-quantification system worn by a growing number of professional and recreational athlete. Will launched WHOOP out of the Harvard Innovation Lab with his co-founders John & Aurelian, when as captain of the Harvard Men’s Varsity Squash team, he became deeply interested in how strain, recovery and sleep affected an athlete’s performance. WHOOP is currently used by Olympians, military, the world’s top trainers, and teams across all major U.S. professional and collegiate sports leagues. Since that podcast, Will has filled me in on how Crossfit athletes have been getting a ton of value out of the WHOOP, and introduced me to Mekenzie Riley, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist by trade who has her license through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as well as both a Bachelors and Master’s degree in dietetics from Eastern Illinois University. In 2016, she went to the Crossfit Games on Team OC3 Black, taking 5th place overall. Now in 2017, she been competing as an individual and finished third in the Atlantic Regional, punching her ticket to the 2017 Crossfit Games in Madison, WI. Will also introduced me to Seth Page, Owner and Co-Founder of Misfit Athletics (where Mekenzie trains). Misfit works with athletes of mixed modalities to prepare them to compete at the highest level in the sport of CrossFit. Seth started out in the more traditional field of fitness training in 2006 before transitioning to CrossFit in 2008, and began coaching athletes locally in 2009 as the sport began to gain traction. Since then, Seth and Misfit have worked with countless CrossFit Regionals and Games qualifiers. Seth's current focus includes experimenting with and refining programming for competitive athletes, all while training for his first Ironman race. In today's podcast, I have Will, Seth and Mekenzie all on the show together to talk all things WHOOP and self-quantification for Crossfit, Ironman and beyond, including: -Mekenzie's training protocol and qualifying strategy for the 2017 CrossFit Games...[14:30] -How Seth tracks eight different athletes each day and which parameters he looks at to make training decisions "on the fly"...[16:40 & 19:45] -How Seth differentiates between mental vs. physical fatigue...[26:30] -How Seth is using Crossfit to train for Ironman triathlon...[29:20] -Whether you need to be concerned about Bluetooth radiation or LED light signals from the WHOOP...[45:50 & 47:40] -Mekenzie's approach when it comes to Seth's diet, and why she has transitioned him from “carb backloading” to a more traditional diet for endurance athletes...[51:00] -How Seth and Mekenzie are using WHOOP to customize nutrition data...[60:00] -And much more! Ep 861How Testosterone & Hormone Injections Work (Along With Growth Hormone, Peptides, SARMs, PRP & Much More!)

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/gainswave In the podcast "The Non-Pill, Natural Alternative To Viagra That Instantly Fixes Erectile Dysfunction, Boosts Drive In Men & Women, Enhances Orgasm & Much More." I interviewed Dr. Richard Gaines about how he uses something called "Acoustic Sound Wave Therapy" in both men and women to enhance orgasms, libido, blood flow, size, sexual pleasure and much more. But Dr. Gaines specializes in much more than simply sound wave therapy, and in today's show, I invite him back to talk about testosterone injections, growth hormones, PRP, SARMs, anti-aging and beyond. If you've ever wondered how one uses injections and needles to build muscle, lose fat, defy aging or enhance sexual performance, this episode is a must-listen. Richard Gaines, MD, FAARM, ABAARM, is a leading practitioner of the rapidly evolving science of physician-guided age management. Since 1993 he has been administering hormone therapy and sexual wellness treatments, which have helped hundreds of men regain their self-confidence and live longer healthier lives! Dr. Gaines graduated from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1981, and subsequently obtained his Fellowship at Harvard Medical School. In 2005 Dr. Gaines founded HealthGAINS, an anti-aging medical practice, where he resolved to find a new approach to ageing well, particularly for men struggling with age-related sexual performance issues. Today, Dr. Gaines has published 3 books, including one specifically on erectile dysfunction. He remains at the forefront of creating innovative sexual wellness treatments, including the development of his revolutionary new treatment protocol for erectile dysfunction, GAINSWave™. Dr. Gaines understands how sexual performance can affect your self-esteem, and can impact every aspect of your relationships. Over the years he has helped thousands of men enjoy a happy and healthy sex life with his breakthrough sexual wellness treatments. Looking forward, his goal is to have men develop a deeper understanding of how and why their ability to perform changes with age. Additionally he aims to expose the many myths and misconceptions that there are about sexual wellness, and continue to lead the way in developing treatments, such as the GAINSWave™, that treat the root causes of ED and other age-related sexual issues. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The fascinating story of how growth hormone is made by bacteria in a laboratory setting...[14:20] -The difference between sermorelin (Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone) and actual growth hormone...[16:30] -What the "sweet spot" value is for levels of Insulin Like Growth Factor is (and why there actually isn't an association between high IGF-1 and cancer!)...[23:15 & 24:36] -Whether hormone therapy is "safe" and whether it shuts down the body's own natural production...[28:00] -Why Dr. Gaines recommends taking one type of growth hormone in the morning and a different type of growth hormone in the evening...[32:00] -How to keep your "balls from shrinking" when using testosterone...[39:45] -When somebody takes a testosterone injection, whether they should only inject testosterone, or take other things at the same time...[44:10] -What Dr. Gaines thinks about alternatives to testosterone injections, such as one popular supplement of late called "SARMs"...[44:30] -The "P-shot" and "O-shot" that Dr. Gaines administers in his clinic, and how they work for enhancing sexual performance...[49:25] -And much more! Ep 859The Single Missing Mystery Nutrient That Contributes To The 10 Leading Causes Of Aging & Disease Worldwide (And How Get 100-1,000 Times More Of It Than Most People Ever Eat).

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/algae2 My guest on today's podcast is Catharine Arnston, and she puts my own algae consumption to shame, eating 75 pieces of chlorella and 75 pieces of spirulina every day. She holds an MBA from Western’s Ivey School of Business, and a BA in geography and economic development from Queen’s University. She is a Board Certified Health Counselor from The Institute for Integrative Nutrition and a REIKI Master. She is also an algae expert and the CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of ENERGYbits, a sports nutrition company that sells algae in tablet form to athletes and consumers (click here and use code BEN to save 10% on any of their algae products). Catharine founded ENERGYbits eight years ago after she became aware of the health and athletic benefits of a plant based diet. When she subsequently learned that algae was the most nutrient dense plant in the world and that Asians had been growing it and benefiting from it for fifty years, she made it her life mission to bring algae into the mainstream so others could benefit from this superfood too. You may also recognize Catharine from this SharkTank episode! Anyways, Catharine makes the bold claim that a lack of chlorophyll (greens) in diet leads to the ten different leading causes of aging and disease worldwide. -What is chlorophyll? [10:50] Chlorophyll is a fat-based pigment that makes plants green. It is the substance that is responsible for photosynthesis – the usage of light energy from the sun to convert water & carbon dioxide into nutrition (glucose) for the plants. What foods are high in chlorophyll? Green foods! The darker the green, the more chlorophyll. In fact, algae has the highest concentration of chlorophyll in the world, containing 100-1000 times more chlorophyll than any other plant or vegetable (50 times more than wheat grass). Chlorophyll is a phytonutrient that oxygenates & detoxifies the blood. It is rich in enzymes and high in amino acids. It alkalizes the body, is anti-inflammatory, is an antioxidant, chelates heavy metals, been shown to repair damaged DNA and speed up the healing process of wounds. It even helps mitochondria ATP with a fuel source that is cleaner than glucose (with the addition of sunshine). The structure of chlorophyll is nearly identical to that of hemoglobin in our blood. The center atom of chlorophyll is magnesium (green) while the center atom of hemoglobin is iron (red). Magnesium is what helps alkalize the body and deliver oxygen to cells & tissues. Chlorophyll helps promote the formation of hemoglobin and red blood cells. In my article How To Eat Algae (The Ultimate Guide To Fueling With Spirulina And Chlorella) and my podcast Is This The Most Dense Source Of Nutrition On The Face Of The Planet? I introduce chlorophyll, but in today's show, Catharine and I take a deep dive into how chlorophyll intake can manage everything from excess acidity to inflammation to accelerated aging and beyond. During our discussion, you'll discover a host of new information (and a big credit to Catharine for gathering the research presented in the comprehensive shownotes below!): -How algae can reduce cellular inflammation due to its high concentration of essential fatty acids, alkaline composition and high concentration of antioxidants, including the three primary precursors to the body’s most important antioxidants – glutathione (cysteine, glycine and glutamine)...[18:00] Inflammation References: Journal of Medicinal Food Feb 16 2013 - Health Benefits of Blue-Green Algae: Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Cancer Cell International Marine - Algal natural products with anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties June 2013 Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects Edible blue-green algae reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting NF-κB pathway in macrophages and splenocytes April 2013 Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - 2012 glutathione synthesis -How algae affects damaged and decreased mitochondria, particularly via Superoxide Dismutase in spirulina...[21:55] Mitochondrial References: NutritionFacts.org Mitochondrial Theory of Aging Michael Greger M.D. FACLM December 28th, 2010 Volume 4 Linus Pauling Institute Oregon State University/Micronutrient Information Center: Chlorophyll Journal of Zhejiang Univeristy SCIENCE B, January 20, 2009 Chlorella vulgaris triggers apoptosis in hepatocarcinogenesis-induced rats* Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology Protection against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity by Spirulina in rats December 2006 Robert Thiel pHD NaturoPath Food Antioxidants are Superior to Isolated Antioxidants and importance of SOD from plants -Why you should care about ATP production in relation to disease and aging, and what effect does algae has on it...[26:40] ATP References: Journal of Cell Science 2014 Light-harvesting chlorophyll pigments enable mammalian mitochondria to capture photonic energy and p

Ep 857What Is The Bible? How an Ancient Library of Poems, Letters, and Stories Can Transform the Way You Think and Feel About Everything.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/whatisthebible I read. A lot. On an average week, I read 3-5 books, listen to 15-20 podcasts, and read several dozen research articles. And one of my secrets to this hyperproductive digestion of information is through the use of services, websites, journals, newsletters and, well, “digests” that disseminate information into readily accessible bite-size pieces that allow me to cut through the clutter and quickly get to the main summaries, takeaways and actionable items from all the content. For example, I'm a huge fan of the book reviews produced by gentleman such as Derek Sivers and James Clear and Brian Johnson. In addition, I stay up to date with health, medical and science news via the Stone Hearth Newsletters, exercise and nutrition research via the website Suppversity, cutting-edge new fitness and supplement research via the The Examine Research Digest and, for general life knowledge, the Farnham Street blog for staying up-to-date with the best recently published books and articles from around the web. Furthermore, if you visit my house, my library is massive. There are books everywhere, stacked by my bedside, strewn across the living room coffee table, and, much to the chagrin of my wife, in ever-evolving, towering, overflowing shelves of books in the downstairs office and basement. But one book rises above them all. I have more copies of this one book than any other book. That book is The Bible. So when author Rob Bell, my guest on today's podcast, released his brand new book "What Is the Bible?: How an Ancient Library of Poems, Letters, and Stories Can Transform the Way You Think and Feel About Everything", I not only stayed up until 2am to read the entire thing in a single evening, but I also realized it is the perfect book and Rob is the perfect person to help explain why I like and why I read the Bible so freakin' much. Rob is actually the author of ten books, including the New York Times Bestsellers Love Wins, What We Talk About When We Talk About God, The Zimzum of Love, and What is the Bible?. His podcast, called the RobCast, was named by iTunes Best of 2015. He’s been profiled in the New Yorker, toured with Oprah, and in 2011 Time Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. He has a regular show at Largo, the legendary comedy and music club in Los Angeles, where he lives with wife Kristen and their three kids. In this new book "What Is the Bible?", Rob takes us deep into actual passages to reveal the humanity behind the Scriptures. He addresses the concerns of all those who see the Bible as God’s Word but are troubled by the ethical dilemmas, errors, and inconsistencies in Scripture. He recaptures the Bible's magic and reaffirms its power and inspiration to shape and inspire our lives today. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why the Bible is a relevant historical book vs. simply, as many would argue, a collection of random, unverified stories mysteriously “inspired by God”...[11:10 & 17:30] - Why Rob thinks most people read the Bible wrong...[12:50] -The shocking decline of culture that occurs when the farming advice in the Bible is ignored...[19:07] -Why the Bible is a “library” and not a single book...[24:00] -How a story of Herod, Joanna and Jesus turns out to be a fascinating way to explain the depth and intrigue and innuendo in the Bible...[25:40] -How you can deal with all the "violence" in the Bible...[31:05] -How Rob accounts for all the seeming inaccuracies or contradictions in the Bible...[40:25] -Why Americans often miss the major themes in the Bible...[45:30] -The single best question to ask when you are reading the Bible...[49:15] -What to do if you want to read the Bible or learn about it, but your family and friends aren’t on board...[56:25] -And much more! Ep 856Sex, Coffee & Chocolate While Pregnant, Babies On Airplanes, Eating Placentas & More: The Mama Natural Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/mamanatural For the last half-century, control over childbirth has been in favor of doctors. Many pregnancy guidebooks are conventional, fear-based, or written by male physicians deeply entrenched in the medical model of birth. But change is underway. A groundswell of women are taking back their pregnancy and childbirth and embracing a natural way. Genevieve Howland, the woman behind the enormously popular Mama Natural blog and YouTube channel, has created an inspiring, fun, and informative guide that demystifies natural pregnancy and walks mom through the process one week at a time. Her new book, The Mama Natural Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth, is the modern (and yet ancient) approach to pregnancy and childbirth. "Natural" recognizes that pregnancy and birth are normal, and that having a baby is a wondrous biological process and rite of passage - not a medical condition. This book draws upon the latest research showing how beneficial and life-changing natural birth is for both babies and moms. Full of weekly advice and tips for a healthy pregnancy, Howland details vital nutrition to take, natural remedies for common and troublesome symptoms, as well as the appropriate (and inappropriate) use of interventions. Peppered throughout are positive birth and pregnancy stories from women of all backgrounds (and all stages of their natural journey) along with advice and insights from a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) plus a Registered Nurse (RN), doula, and lactation consultant. Encouraging, well-researched, and fun, The Mama Natural's Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth will be an essential companion for women everywhere to embrace natural pregnancy and reap all the benefits for both baby and mama. With over 60 million views on her YouTube channel, Genevieve Howland’s funny but informational videos have empowered millions of women to embrace natural pregnancy and parenting. But Genevieve wasn’t always “Mama Natural.” Once upon a time, she was a cigarette smoking junk food junkie. A sugar addict, she was 60 lbs. overweight and her health was in tatters. Through a long road of detox, Genevieve discovered the healing power of real food and natural living. This transformation spread into every area of her life – physical, emotional, and spiritual. Genevieve gave birth to her two children in a birth center supported by a midwife and doula. Today, Genevieve is on a mission to help moms and moms-to-be live happier, healthier lives. Along with her husband Michael, she runs the web’s most popular natural pregnancy blog and YouTube channel. Their work has been featured on Dr. Oz, ABC News, The Daily Mail, and more. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Whether you can really eat chocolate and drink coffee when you're pregnant (you'll be surprised at the answer)...[15:30 & 17:45] -Whether new moms really need to be eating for two (and if there some more precise way to figure out how many calories you should be eating)...[19:20] -Why Genevieve drank raw milk while she was pregnant...[23:50] -If you find out your pregnant one of the very first things that you should do to ensure that your home or body or not a toxic place for a baby…[25:30] -The surprising truth about the accuracy of home pregnancy tests...[31:00] -Whether it is really true that if you exercise while you're pregnant you will have a smarter baby...[33:45] -The best stretches or moves to prepare a woman's body to give birth...[41:30] -One of the best teas to drink for uterine health while pregnant (and some of Genevieve's top natural remedies for morning sickness)...[43:20 & 45:25] -How a new mom should treat smart technology like phones, computers and ultrasounds to protect a growing baby…[49:40] -The link between pregnancy, airplanes, flying and miscarriage...[54:45] -The intriguing evidence about having sex while pregnant (and one thing you definitely shouldn't do during pregnancy sex)…[57:50] -What Genevieve thinks about the concept of eating the placenta...[59:55] -How to mitigate the damaging effects of a C-section (and natural C-section alternatives)...[63:00] -What to expect in the child birthing industry five to ten years from now...[73:00] -And much more! https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/killercells My guest on today's podcast, Jonathan Clinthorne, PhD, has an intimate knowledge regarding the role that diet plays in immune function. Although it flies under the radar in nutrition science, the idea that certain nutrients can interact with the function of a type of cell known as a natural killer (NK) cell is very unique, an enchanting concept and certainly cutting edge, especially when you consider the role of mTOR activators such as leucine, and mTOR suppressors such as calorie restriction and intermittent fasting on NK cell maturation and function. Dr. Clinthorne is an ultra-endurance athlete who was awarded his PhD in Human Nutrition from Michigan State University. He has served on numerous medical advisory boards and has been an author or coauthor on a number of research papers covering topics such as aging, caloric restriction, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, immune function, inflammation and human nutrition. When not working as the Manager of Scientific Affairs and Nutrition Education at Natural Grocers, you can find Jonathan running, climbing or skiing in the mountains of Colorado. Jonathan happens to have an expert working knowledge of exactly to manipulate NK cell function on a daily basis to provide yourself with the most appropriate immune response for the season or around times of intense competition such as a triathlon or marathon, and during our discussion, you'll discover: -How Jonathan discovered the intriguing link between NK cells and calorie restriction while studying human nutrition...[9:30] -Why an NK cell needs to be given a "license to kill", and how that can happen...[13:00] -What keeps NK cells from destroying your own tissue...[15:20] -How the active hexose correlated compound one can find in mushroom extracts are particularly effective for NK cell activation, and the type of mushroom that works best...[22:15] -The link between intermittent fasting, caloric restriction and NK cell protection against respiratory infections in athletes...[24:30] -Whether wine or resveratrol can activate NK cell function, and why they need to be limited to ensure the hormetic response to exercise isn't blunted...[28:50] -How curcumin can be used correctly to lower the risk of flues and respiratory tract infections...[31:35] -The fascinating concept of how the bacteria in your lungs take cues from the bacteria in your gut...[34:30] -Why you should avoid folic acid and folate on the label of a multivitamin...[40:50] -And much more! Ep 853Good Carbs, Bad Carbs, High Carbs, Low Carbs & More: Clearing Up Carbohydrate Confusion With Dr. Michael Ruscio.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/gut2 I first interviewed Dr. Michael Ruscio in the podcast episode "Why Healthy People Get Broken Guts, And What You Can Do About It." In that discussion, we delve into: -Dr. Ruscio’s personal diet, and what his typical day looks like (including his meal of choice at Whole Foods)… -The surprising things that happen to your gut when you combine calories and high levels of physical activity… -Whether athletes should fast, and what happens when an exercise enthusiast “stops the flow of calories” and fasts… -How an “elemental diet” works to reduce stress on the gut… -When you actually should consider starving the bacteria in your gut… -Whether you can combat “overstressing” the gut with food by simply using things like digestive enzymes… -The biggest mistake most people make with cleanses, enemas and detoxing… -How you can heal damage to the valves passing through your gut… -If you could test anything and everything going in your gut, what you should test… -And much more! Dr. Michael Ruscio is a functional medicine practitioner, researcher, and author. His specialties include autoimmune, thyroid, and digestive disorders. He consults clients locally in the Bay Area and remotely across the country. His clinical research is focused on digestive disorders. Dr. Ruscio has been a featured speaker at numerous conferences including the SIBO Symposium, PaleoFX, Ancestral Health Symposium, and an international symposium in London. He’s also spoken for several online health summits, including Sean Croxton’s Digestion Sessions. Dr. Ruscio has collaborated with many authorities in the health and wellness industry, including Robb Wolf and Melissa Hartwig. He has been interviewed on several popular podcasts such as Sean Croxton, Robb Wolf, Ben Greenfield, and Jimmie Moore, and he’s provided clinical training for Designs for Health and the SIBO Symposium. Dr. Ruscio also conducts a very highly rated functional medicine podcast. You can visit his website and podcast here. Today, Dr. Ruscio is back with the latest research on carbohydrates and the gut, and during Part 2 of our discussion, we dive into: -Michael's take on the statement that "all carbs get converted to glucose so there is no such thing as bad carbs" and whether there is a consensus regarding the role of all carbs, good carbs, bad carbs, high carbs and low carbs...[8:11] -Why Michael doesn't like food allergy tests or use them much in his practice...[13:10] -The role of carbohydrates or carbohydrate avoidance when it comes to a digestive condition like IBS (gas, bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, lose stools)...[19:40, 21:45 & 32:10] -How the microbiota influences this and whether people with digestive conditions need to feed their healthy bacteria in order to feel better, and if so, how do they do that if they're eating low carb...[20:20 & 23:45] -Whether a low carb diet really damages your thyroid...[40:40] -The impact of artificial sweeteners on a low-carb diet and the truth about stevia...[56:15] -Whether you really need to run like the plague when a supplement or bar has, say, 10g or 20g of carbohydrates...[52:30] -The impact of a low-carbohydrate diet on testosterone levels...[64:30] -And much more! Resources from this episode: -My podcast episode with Robb Wolf -My podcast episode on stevia and Zevia -Article: Low carb diets decrease thyroid autoimmunity -A clinical trial comparing a low carb diet to a more traditional low fat diet found low carb worked better for treating type II diabetes. -Another clinical trial comparing low fat versus low carb for type II diabetes found they both work, but low carb worked better -A paleo diet has also been shown to work better than a conventional lower fat/higher grain diet for type 2 diabetes -There are many studies showing traditional low fat/high carb diets that increase fiber, fruit, vegetable and whole grain intake all help with heart disease and obesity, including: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18005489 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8941095 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20573945 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24929874 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14980987 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25552267 -A recent trial found that a paleo diet improves cholesterol levels to a greater extent than traditional heart-healthy (low fat) dietary recommendations. -Another study found consuming a paleo-type diet for only two weeks was able to improve several cardiovascular risk factors compared to a healthy reference diet (traditional low fat diet) in subjects with metabolic syndrome. -A paleo diet caused better improvements to blood sugar control and several cardiovascular risk factors compared to a diabetes diet (traditional lower fat/higher carb) in patients with type 2 diabetes. -A systematic review with meta-analysis shows the paleo diet is more effective for metabolic syndrome than standard nutritional recommendation diets which are typically lower fat and highe

Ep 852Ketogenic Pizza, Ketogenic Toast, Ketogenic Cornflakes, Bulletproof-Ish Coffee & More: The Ketogenic Kitchen Cookbook

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/ketokitchen Ketogenic pizza. Ketogenic toast. Ketogenic cornflakes. Yep, each of these, and many of carbalicious food items actually do exist in low-carb, high-fat nutrient dense recipes. You just have to know what to do, and you have to be willing to think outside the box of how most ketogenic eaters operate: which is basically drinking copious amounts of full-fat coconut milk, buying avocados by the dozen and going through a stick of butter every couple days. Cancer survivors Domini Kemp and Patricia Daly just put the finishing touches on the first-ever comprehensive ketogenic cookbook - a cookbook based on the latest research on nutritional approaches to the prevention and management of cancer and a ketogenic diet. But this book is chock full of delicious recipes and practical ketogenic tips that go way above and beyond just cancer management. For decades, the ketogenic diet―which shifts the body’s metabolism from burning glucose to burning fat, lowering blood sugar and insulin and resulting in a metabolic state known as ketosis―has been used to successfully manage pediatric epilepsy. More recently, it has been used by the Paleo community as a weight loss strategy. Now emerging research suggests that a ketogenic diet, in conjunction with conventional treatments, also offers new hope for those coping with cancer and other serious disease. With endorsements from leading researchers and oncologists such as Dr. Thomas Seyfried (Cancer as a Metabolic Disease), The Ketogenic Kitchen offers more than 250 recipes, as well as meal plans and comprehensive scientific information about the benefits of a ketogenic diet, with sensible advice to help readers through periods of illness, recovery, and treatment. Domini Kemp is an award winning chef, food writer, and entrepreneur. In 2013, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and since then she has shifted her focus towards healthier eating. She changed her column in the Irish Times to focus on healthier recipes and opened Alchemy Juice Co., a juice and wholefoods cafe. The Ketogenic Kitchen is her fifth cookbook. Patricia Daly is an experienced nutritional therapist and author specializing in cancer care and the ketogenic diet in particular. She has worked with hundreds of cancer patients in Ireland and abroad, lectures at the Irish Institute of Nutrition and Health, and is a well-regarded speaker at conferences and in cancer centers. After writing three eBooks, including "PRACTICAL KETO MEAL PLANS FOR ENDURANCE ATHLETES: Tips, Tricks And How To's For Optimizing Performance Using A High Fat, Low Carb Meal Plan", The Ketogenic Kitchen is her first print book. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The difference between Patricia's more "strict" diet and Domini's more "liberal" diet...[8:20] -About how many carbs should you eat to be low carb versus ketosis...[11:20 & 18:55] -The surprising dangers of excessive calorie consumption on a ketogenic diet...[23:10] -The potential dangers of whey protein, especially for certain populations...[28:20] -Why it is that both Patricia and Domini like something called Yacon syrup...[31:00] -How to make your own ketogenic bread to have low carb toast...[34:05] -How to make keto cornflakes or keto cereal...[45:25] -Patrick and Domini's favorite way to make pizza that still allows it to be ketogenic (and how the heck they do the crust)...[46:55] -How to make a simple and tasty low-carb version of the Japanese temaki recipe...[51:30] -How to make "Bullet-proofish" coffee that doesn't result in any bloating or nausea...[55:15] -And much more! Resources from this episode: -Book: The Ketogenic Kitchen: Low carb. High fat. Extraordinary Health. -Book: The Plant Paradox -Yacon syrup -Ben's cricket-shirataki pad thai recipe -Miracle Noodles Show Sponsors: Kimera Koffee - Proven to help you increase focus, power output and cognition. Ep 851The Man I Call "Scraper": Snowboard Shredding, Fascia Fluffing, Protective Chakra Energy Balls & Much More With Scott Dolly.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/thescraper I've met a lot of interesting characters and crazy cats in my life. Scott Dolly, AKA "The Scraper" (at least, that's what I call him) is no exception. I first met Scott in Costa Rica at a digital detox, hot yoga retreat and adventure getaway called "Runga". Yep, that's the same event at which I hung out with Eric, the guy I interviewed in the episode "How To Cure Yourself Of Cancer: An Epic Interview With A Man Who Defied Conventional Medicine & Cured Himself Of Prostate Cancer." and the same event founded by my buddy and Spartan racing bigwig Joe DiStefano, who I interviewed in the episode "Digital Detoxing, Travel-Proofing Your Immune System, Underground Body Weight Workouts & More With Joe DiStefano." A few months after Runga, Scott pulled up to my house in Spokane, WA in a big black SUV jam-packed with snowboarding equipment and a bag full of strange body adjusting and "scraping" tools. Our ensuing weekend together was a geekfest of biomechanics, physiology, fascia fixing, woo-woo chakra energy work and much more, and in today's episode, we take a deep dive into all that and much more. So who is Scott, exactly? Scott Dolly MS, ATC, CSCS is the owner/CEO and founder of Evolution Human Performance and Rehabilitation. He is a manual therapy and IASTM specialist who utilizes biomechanical movement analysis to locate imbalances and dysfunctions in the human body. Scott is a national and international speaker and educator in the field of sports medicine; and he has authored courses on I.A.S.T.M. and Advanced Training Science. Scott also serves as the Peak Performance columnist for Martial Arts Illustrated Magazine in the UK, through which his work reaches over a half million people worldwide. Scott has over 15 years’ experience studying and working with the human body and he works with thousands of clients every year. He resides in Winchester, Virginia. His credentials and certifications include: -Master’s Degree in Athletic Training: Shenandoah University -Undergraduate work in Biology and Physics: Shepherd University -Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist: National Strength and Conditioning Association -Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization Specialist -Reiki Master: 11 years During our discussion, you'll discover: -The truth about whether foam rolling really works, and why Scott is a big fan of "butter knives" for your fascia...[14:45] -Why Scott said I needed to do more “closed kinetic chain exercises” when he analyzed my gait...[26:40] -How Scott helped a nervous guy on the chair lift using "distance healing" and Qi Gong...[41:30] -Scott's work in sound bowls and healing frequencies, and how he aligns that with being able to run a 4:40 mile, train NFL athletes and deadlift nearly 700 pounds...[46:30 & 56:30] -The protective “bubble” Scott drew around us inside the mountain lodge when we were snowboarding...[46:20] -Scott's experience with the one-inch-punch by a Shaolin monk...[59:50] -And much more... Ep 849The Complete Guide to Fasting: How To Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/fasting Thousands of books have been written about the latest and greatest diets that will help people lose weight and improve health. But a key element in any successful nutritional health program is a tried-and-true method that most people haven’t thought about—yet it could be revolutionary for taking health to the next level. This ancient secret is fasting. Fasting is not about starving oneself. When done right, it’s an incredibly effective therapeutic approach that produces amazing results regardless of diet plan. In fact, Toronto-based nephrologist Dr. Jason Fung has used a variety of fasting protocols with more than 1,000 patients, with fantastic success. Dr. Fung earned his medical degree at the University of Toronto, where he also completed his internal medicine residency before heading to the University of California, Los Angeles, for his fellowship in nephrology. He currently practices as a kidney specialist in Toronto. He is the chief of the department of medicine at Scarborough General Hospital. In addition to clinical medicine, he is also on the board of directors of Low Carb Diabetes Association and the scientific editor of the Journal of Insulin Resistance. During the course of treating thousands of patients, it became clear to Dr. Fung that the epidemic of type 2 diabetes and obesity was getting worse. The prevailing dietary recommendations to reduce dietary fat and calories were clearly ineffective. He founded the Intensive Dietary Management Program to provide a unique treatment focus for type 2 diabetes and obesity: rather than focusing on medications, this clinic focuses on dietary changes that are simple yet effective. In The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting, he has teamed up with international bestselling author and veteran health podcaster Jimmy Moore to explain what fasting is really about, why it’s so important, and how to fast in a way that improves health. Together, they make fasting as a therapeutic approach both practical and easy to understand. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Jason and Ben have different takes on whether or not to eat breakfast...[8:25] -The five different physiological stages of fasting...[16:45] -Why growth hormone actually goes up, not down, when you fast, and how the body uses this mechanism to maintain muscle...[30:15] -Why fasting doesn't actually decrease your metabolic rate or cause you to go into to starvation mode...[33:20] -What kind of scenario would actually cause your metabolic rate to decrease with calorie restriction...[37:10] -Why most of the Biggest Loser contestants actually regained their weight after the show...[44:35] -The reason hunger gradually disappears during a fast...[49:55] -The shocking things that happen to your body when you do an extended fast...[56:35] -What refeeding syndrome is...[63:00] -And much more... Ep 848A Food Industry Expert Reveals The Shocking Truth About "Healthy" Energy Bars, Protein Bars & Paleo Bars (& How To Choose The Right Bar).

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/bar As I described just a few days ago in this comprehensive article "Dirty Little Secrets Of The "Healthy" Energy Bar Industry (& The Shocking Truth About Protein Bars, Paleo Bars & Beyond).", I used to be an energy and "health" bar addict. I'd easily consume 2-3 energy bars an hour on a long bike ride, always have some kind of satiating healthy "Paleo-ish" bar tucked away somewhere during a run or a long road trip or airplane ride, and would typically be munching on some kind of massive, forearm-sized protein bar while wandering out of the gym after weightlifting. No wonder I struggled for years with chronically elevated blood sugar, gut rot, excess protein intake, energy level roller coaster rides and toxins in my blood tests. And no wonder so many other folks who depend on health bars as a staple wind up constantly fighting an uphill battle against weight gain, poor energy levels (ironic, right?), bloating, gas, constipation and more. Why this seeming paradox? Unfortunately, most energy bars are chock full of sugar and starch, which can cause dangerous blood sugar surges and fat formation. And if the sugar gets removed from a bar, it's often replaced with nasty artificial sweeteners that can kill gut bacteria and cause neurotoxicity. Or the bar is packed with so much excess protein that you get ammonia build-up, acidity, insulin spiking and gut issues like bloating, gas and constipation. Finally, from peanuts to soy to whey and beyond, the ingredients of many bars can cause food intolerance reactions, resulting in weight gain, skin, gut and immune system problems and a host of other health issues. Finally, if a bar actually is healthy, it either tastes like cardboard, falls apart in the heat, or is like biting into tree bark in the cold, and simply hasn't been tested "in-the-trenches" by people living hard-charging lives or athletes competing under real conditions that exist outside of some whitewashed food laboratory. And I've only scratched the surface of the issues and the shocking truth about so-called "healthy" energy bars, protein bars, Paleo bars and beyond. In this interview with David Urman, food industry expert, we pull back the curtain on the healthy food industry, and you'll discover the disturbing truth about everything from "natural flavors" to IMO's to processing, preservatives and beyond. So who is David? David graduated UC Berkeley School of Law and practiced law for 10 years, then jumped into the health and nutrition industry, working initially in medical device management and the production of a cutting-edge breath ketone monitor (which I've discussed on previous shows) and eventually the production of ketogenic friendly foods. So he has a unique background in business, food development and nutrition. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How you can measure oxidative stress via a breath test...[13:12] -How David created a research device that can also measure your level of ketosis via your breath...[12:30 & 15:25] -The shocking ingredients of one of the top health bars that remains a favorite of the health-conscious...[20:00] -A notorious, hidden ingredient called "IMO" that is in most bars, and that spikes blood sugar through the roof...[24:50] -The surprising additives in a bar that are allowed to be called "natural flavors"...[29:10] -How you can make a bar shelf stable but with minimal preservatives, and not need to be refrigerated or frozen...[38:20] -How a bar can provide adequate amino acids for recovery without spiking insulin and glucose, or creating mTor, accelerated aging and longevity issues from excess protein...[43:45] -Quinoa's little known cousin "kaniwa", and the surprising list of nutrients, minerals and antioxidants in kaniwa...[48:07] -Why the fats combination of white chia seeds, chocolate liquor, cacao nibs, cocoa butter, cocoa solids, coconut flakes and almonds gives a perfect hedonistic combination of fat and taste...[52:40 & 55:00] -Why organic honey, as a rich source of antioxidants and minerals, offers a slow time-release carbohydrate-based fuel source that actually lowers appetite and increases satiety...[54:07] -How Spanish almonds, cacao nibs and the chia seeds can provide fiber without the addition of IMO's or synthetic starches...[57:38 & 59:30] -How much damage the modern pasteurization and long high-heat cooking process used on bars can destroy the nutrient content of the "superfoods" in the bar...[64:40] -The high-antioxidant capacity of organic honey, almonds, cocoa nibs, kaniwa, chia seeds and chocolate liquor, and how these combined components have very high free radical scavenging capabilities...[68:30] -Why the NatureBite bar that David and Ben developed took over two years to create and test...[71:30] -And much more! Ep 847Why You Can't Get Away From The Toxin Glyphosate (& What You Can Do About It).

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/restore My guest on today's podcast, Zach Bush, MD, is one of the few triple board certified physicians in the country, with expertise in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Hospice/Palliative care. He was introduced to me by former podcast guest Dr. Joseph Mercola, and he is an extremely, extremely intelligent dude, especially when it comes to optimizing gut health using some pretty cutting edge strategies. In 2012, Dr. Bush discovered a family of carbon-based redox molecules made by bacteria, and he and his research team have subsequently demonstrated that this cellular communication network functions as an antidote to the chemical "glyphosate", and many other dietary, chemical, and pharmaceutical toxins that disrupt your body's natural defense systems. Dr. Bush points to his own kids as the driving force behind his passion for change. He is fiercely motivated by a desire to have them experience a much brighter and healthier future. His education efforts provide a grassroots foundation from which we can launch change in our legislative decisions, ultimately up-shifting consumer behavior to bring about radical change in the mega industries of big farming, big pharma, and Western Medicine at large. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Dr. Bush stayed in school for 17 years (and what it means to be a "triple certified" board physician)...[10:00] -The discovery in soil that Dr. Bush made in 2012, and what he was looking for exactly when he found it...[11:10] -How bacteria, in the right conditions, can "talk" to each other in the same way that your mitochondria do...[18:00 ] -The method Dr. Bush used to turn carbon-based redox molecules into a drinkable liquid...[26:55 & 29:45] -How something called "lignite" can assist with mitochondrial health and longevity...[34:40] -Why the best probiotic strains still contain only 24 of the 20,000-30,00 different kinds of bacteria in your gut...[37:20] -How glyphosate wreaks havoc on the tight junctions in your gut, and why it's impossible to escape it in water, air, dirt and food...[45:20] -Why gluten can cause some of the same damaging issues as glyphosate, and why it wasn't until the 1980's that folks started to develop more gluten intolerances...[51:30] -Why it's not enough to just eat "dirty plants" or fermented foods when it comes to equipping your gut to heal from glyphosate exposure...[59:25] -And much more! Ep 846Getting Shredded For A Wedding, How To Conquer Fear Of Fruit, Lifting Heavy Stuff & More: The Laura Schoenfeld Podcast

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/fearless Laura Schoenfeld, in addition to officially being the individual who introduced me to "fried pickles" at a recent Weston A. Price Foundation conference, is a registered dietitian trained in functional medical nutrition therapy. Her philosophy on nutrition is influenced by ancestral diets, principles of biochemistry, current research, and clinical experience. Through working with hundreds of clients, she has found that under-eating, overly restrictive dieting, inappropriate exercise, and inadequate attention to sleep and stress management is rampant in those trying to solve their health concerns through functional medicine and real food. Addressing these common but overlooked diet and lifestyle issues allows her clients to live their healthiest, fittest, symptom-free life, without being consumed by thoughts of food and exercise. Her work has been featured in magazines such as Prevention, Women's Health, and Reader's Digest. You can find her at lauraschoenfeldrd.com or listen to her podcast, "The Ancestral RDs", over on iTunes. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why you shouldn't want "abs"...[8:35] -How Laura completely changed her training routine from "burning calories" to "lifting heavy stuff"...[18:00] -Why it's silly for people to be afraid of fruit and fructose...[24:45] -Why Ben personally moderates his red meat intake to just once every 2-3 days...[33:30] -What populations benefit from keeping red meat to a minimum and switching to a high-carb, high-fiber diet...[36:45] -What Laura learned from eating a Biblical "Daniel Fast" (and why the modern Mediterranean Diet is flawed)...[45:50 & 55:10] -The tool Laura uses to choose supplements and medications based on personal genetics...[63:13] -The one vitamin most people tend to be deficient in...[70:00] -And much more! Ep 845Maximize Oxygen Utilization Efficiency, Simulate High Altitude Training, Get The Cardiovascular Capacity of a Navy SEAL & More With "The Oxygen Advantage" Author Patrick McKeown.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/oxygenadvantage It's no secret that I'm somewhat obsessed with breathing. In the past years I've written articles on everything from combining ketosis, breath holds and freediving, to how to make your own hyperbaric “exercise with oxygen therapy” (EWOT) device, to Wim Hof style breathing for cold thermogenesis to underwater workouts with Laird Hamilton to making yourself high with holotropic breathwork to the use of fancy breath strips and “Turbine” devices to enhance nasal breathing during both exercise and sleep… ...and recorded plenty of podcasts with breathing experts too. Several years ago, Wim Hof appeared on the BenGreenfieldFitness show for one of his first ever podcasts, entitled “Conquer The Cold And Get Quantum Leaps In Performance In This Exclusive Interview With The Amazing Iceman Wim Hof“. He came back again for "The Iceman Returns: Wim Hof On Climbing Frigid Mountains In Underwear, Eating Only Once A Day, Activating Hormones With Breathing & More." Then there's my interview with freediving expert Ted Harty "Freediving, Breathholding, Iceman Wim Hof, Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible Training, How To Use Static Apnea Tables & More!" along with my performance breathing interview with Brian Mackenzie on "How To Hold Your Breath For Four Minutes, Training Mask Myths, Performance Breathing & More". Just a few months ago, I interviewed Dr. Belisa Vranich for the episode "Pee Strips, Power Lungs & Pulse Oximeters: How To Flip The Switch On Your Body’s Own Natural Ability To Heal Itself (& Little-Known Ways To Breathe Better)." And then there's this epic XPT performance breathing workshop you can join me at in Kauai, Hawaii Dec 7-10, where guys like me, Brain Mackenzie and Laird Hamilton will teach you every form of breathwork on the face of the planet. Today's guest is yet another oxygen expert, and the author of The Oxygen Advantage, one of the best breathing books I've read. In The Oxygen Advantage, the man who has trained over 5,000 people—including Olympic and professional athletes—in reduced breathing exercises, shares his scientifically validated techniques to help you breathe more efficiently. His name is Patrick McKeown, and in his book, you learn everything from the fundamental relationship between oxygen and the body, to how to use a Body Oxygen Level Test (BOLT) to determine how efficiently your body uses oxygen to how to increase your BOLT score by using light breathing exercises and learning how to simulate high altitude training, along with techniques used by Navy SEALs and professional athletes to help increase endurance, weight loss, and vital red blood cells to dramatically improve cardiovascular fitness. Patrick McKeown completed his clinical training in the Buteyko Breathing Method at the Buteyko Clinic, Moscow, Russia in 2002 and was accredited by the late Professor Konstantin Buteyko. Patrick has spent the last 15 years working with tens of thousands of children and adults worldwide, who experience breathing pattern disorders, sleep disordered breathing and anxiety. To date, he has written eight books on the subject, including Close Your Mouth, Anxiety Free: Stop Worrying and Quieten Your Mind, Asthma Free Naturally, Always Breathe Correctly and Sleep with Buteyko. To date, Patrick has worked with some of the top athletes in the world across a variety of sports including tennis, cycling, American Football, MMA and track and field. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why we have always thought shallow underbreathing was a health problem, but why Patrick says the opposite: that's it's chronic overbreathing that is the issue...[9:18] -The scientifically proven benefits of nasal breathing...[13:20] -The fascinating links between acidity, alkalinity, overbreathing and weight gain...[19:30] -What happens if you're breathing 'too much' for shorter periods of time, like during exercise...[22:50] -What the BOLT measurement is and why it's important that you have a long BOLT measurement...[28:56] -Why Patrick is such a fan of humming...[32:00] -The best simple exercise you can do to increase breathing efficiency and increase your BOLT score...[37:00] -The oxygen saturation percentage level you need to get to before you start getting the benefits of holding your breath during exercise...[46:40] -The sprint and track breathholding workouts Patrick implements with the athletes he coaches...[48:00] -A quick breathing trick you can use to decongest congestion from a head cold...[51:45] -A baking soda, apple cider vinegar and carbonated water hack you can use to increase your breathhold time...[55:35] -Why you may want to consider taping your mouth shut while you sleep...[58:25] -How the way you breathe actually changes the structure of your face...[60:25] -Why the naked mole rat lives so long, and what this has to do with breathing...[64:30] -And much more! Ep 842The Shocking Story Of Vaccines, The Toxicity Of Ultrasounds, Why You Shouldn't Play With Your Child & Much More With Dr. Thomas Cowan

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/childcare I first introduced you to the brilliant, well-spoken and outside-the-box physician Dr. Thomas Cowan in the podcast episode entitled "How (& Why) To Eat More Vegetables, Why A Plant Is Like An Upside-Down Human, Little-Known Superfood Plants & More!". Dr. Cowan then returned to the show for the mind-blowing episode "Why Your Heart Is Not A Pump (& What Most Doctors Don’t Know About The True Cause Of Heart Disease)." On today's episode, Dr. Cowan is back, this time to delve into shocking story of vaccines and specifically what happened regarding vaccinations in the last 100 years, the toxicity of prenatal ultrasounds, childhood play (including defending his controversial comment "don't play with your children"), and many other topics from the book he co-authored with Sally Fallon Morell entitled "The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Child Care". Dr. Cowan discovered the work of the two men who would have the most influence on his career while teaching gardening as a Peace Corps volunteer in Swaziland, South Africa. He read “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration” by Weston A. Price, as well as Rudolf Steiner’s work on biodynamic agriculture. These events inspired him to pursue a medical degree and he graduated from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 1984. After his residency in Family Practice at Johnson City Hospital in Johnson City, New York, he set up an anthroposophical medical practice in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Dr. Cowan relocated to San Francisco in 2003. He has served as vice president of the Physicians Association for Anthroposophical Medicine and is a founding board member of the Weston A. Price Foundation™. During his career he has studied and written about many subjects in medicine. These include nutrition, homeopathy, anthroposophical medicine and herbal medicine. He is the principal author of the book The Fourfold Path to Healing and is the co-author of The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Child Care. He writes the “Ask the Doctor” column in Wise Traditions in Food, Farming and the Healing Arts, the foundation’s quarterly magazine, and has lectured throughout the United States and Canada. Have you ever wondered what happens when someone drips a bunch of saliva into a special tube and mails it off to a company like 23AndMe or DNAFit for genetic testing? Is there a difference between something you pay a couple hundred bucks for on a website like 23AndMe or DNAFit and the type of "full genome sequencing" people are paying tens of thousands of dollars to companies like the Human Longevity Project to do? Are there such things as "bad genes" or "bad SNPs" and if so, can you do anything about it? What is the future of genetic testing and fixing or upgrading yourself based on your gene results? We delve into these topics and many more on today's podcast. My guest on this episode is Joseph Cohen, previously a podcast guest on 32 Ways to Stimulate Your Vagus Nerve, Fine-Tune Your Nervous System & Self-Hack Your Hormones. Ep 840Porn, Sugar, Cookies, Bananas, Sweet Potato Chips & The Matrix: A Wired To Eat Book Review With Robb Wolf.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/wired The last time I had Robb Wolf on my show, we talked about nicotine gum, alactic training, binaural beats, small-scale farming and a whole lot more. This interview with Robb threatens to be no different, as we delve into his new book Wired to Eat: Turn Off Cravings, Rewire Your Appetite for Weight Loss, and Determine the Foods That Work for You. The surprising truth is that we are genetically wired to eat more and move less, the exact opposite of the advice we are often given. Robb claims to have developed a more customized weight loss solution that works with your body, a solution based not on arbitrary restriction of foods but on what works for you. A former research biochemist, health expert, and bestselling author Robb Wolf, has designed an eating program, based on groundbreaking research, that will rewire your appetite for weight loss and help you determine the optimal foods for your diet and metabolism. Ep 839The Problem With Meal Replacements, Soylent Knockoffs & A Radical New Superfood.

https//bengreenfieldfitness.com/amplepodcast I recently had a chance to taste a new superfood meal replacement powder called "Ample" (you can use code GREENFIELD for a big, fat 15% discount). It was so tasty, and such an interesting approach to the burgeoning world of dime-a-dozen meal replacement powders (it actually was the #1 food campaign of all time on IndieGoGo) that I decided to get the inventor on a podcast to ask him about it. His name is Connor Young. Connor is a nutrition nerd, fitness freak and self-proclaimed biohacker, obsessed with optimizing the human body. He graduated with a degree in biology and while studying, he found passion for CrossFit, leading him to co-found Shackle Island CrossFit in Nashville, Tennessee. After selling Shackle Island and with continued interest in medicine, Connor joined Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Johnson & Johnson's surgery division. For two years, he advised surgeons on intra-operative device usage. After becoming jaded with the reactive nature of medicine, Connor left J&J to create a physical therapy start-up Koach, a platform that allowed PTs to more effectively engage patients in home exercises. This brought Connor to San Francisco, where he moved into an entrepreneurial “hacker house” with dozens others. Connor was exposed to how easy it was for his well-intentioned but busy housemates to eat unhealthily. After conducting nutrition and cooking classes for his housemates, Connor formulated Ample as a balanced meal for those looking for optimal nutrition who refuse to sacrifice health for convenience. His vision for Ample is to strive for perfect nutrition through a scientifically grounded formula made from real foods. Ample is pretty unique stuff, really. Here's the nutrition label: It comes in a 400 calorie version, and also a 600 calorie version, as shown below: And here's the macronutrient breakdown: During my discussion with Connor, you'll discover: -How Connor went from knowing how to cook only 3 things to become the inventor of a meal replacement powder...[10:35] -The actual macronutrient breakdown of 50-60% fat, 20-30% protein and 10% carbohydrate in Ample...[22:55] -How Connor figured out how to make Ample high-fat without actually having the fats oxidized...[25:27] -The best way to mix Ample to make it as thick as possible...[31:00] -The reasoning behind the carbohydrate, prebiotic, and fiber blend in Ample...[42:10] -Why Connor chose to add the particular sweeteners that are in Ample, while still keeping sugar content extremely low...[50:15] -Whether you need to be concerned about estrogens and plastics with the plastic bottle...[54:12] -How you can get a special version Ample if you are vegetarian or vegan or lactose-free...[56:30] -The fascinating studies that are being done on Ample...[60:00] -And much more... Ep 838High-Fat Fudge Balls, The Best Fruits For Blood Sugar, Egg Allergies & More With "Fat For Fuel" Author Dr. Mercola

For over a century, we’ve accepted the scientific consensus that cancer results from genetic disease due to chromosomal damage in cell nuclei. But what if cancer isn’t a genetic disease after all? What if scientists are chasing a flawed paradigm, and cancer isn’t a disease of damaged DNA but rather of defective metabolism as a result of mitochondrial dysfunction? What if that startling truth could revolutionize our understanding of other diseases as well—and show us a radical new path to optimal health? In the groundbreaking new book Fat for Fuel: A Revolutionary Diet to Combat Cancer, Boost Brain Power, and Increase Your Energy, the first of its kind, New York Times best-selling author, one of the nation's leading natural-health practitioner, and my previous guest on this podcast, Dr. Joseph Mercola explains how nearly all disease is caused by defective metabolic processes. Then he reveals what’s really causing your metabolism to go haywire: damage and dysfunction in the mitochondria, thousands of which are at work in nearly every cell in your body, generating 90 percent of the energy you need to stay alive and well. When mitochondria become damaged in large numbers, it is impossible to stay healthy. That's his argument, at least. But in this podcast, you get to listen as Dr. Mercola and I take a deep dive in this new view of cancer and much, much more when it comes to optimizing your mitochondria. Dr. Mercola is a board certified family physician who has seen tens of thousands of patients before transitioning to a full time internet journalist, as he felt he could help far more people than he could in private practice. It turns out he was right, because every month he has ten million unique visitors and 80 million unique visitors for the year. It has been the most visited natural health site for the last 12 years and is now translated into six different languages. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why you must "eat today to control the hormones that will tell your cells what to do tomorrow." [10:35] -The problem with the popular diabetic drug metformin...[12:55] -Why Dr. Mercola lost too much weight and got too skinny...[14:10] -Why Dr. Mercola is such a fan of tracking iron levels, and what iron numbers are good to look for...[20:00] -The "selfie stick" trick Dr. Mercola uses to minimize his EMF exposure from cell phone use...[27:10] -Why berries and grapefruits are "acceptable" foods in Dr. Mercola's recommended diet...[33:50] -Why Dr. Mercola eats 1-3 avocados per day, whether you need to buy organic, how to save 50% on avocados, and a trick for transporting avocados easily...[36:00] -An extremely tasty high-fat fudge ball recipe...[36:30] -How heating eggs can make you allergic to them...[47:30] -The #1 food and macronutrient tracking tool that Dr. Mercola recommends...[54:20] -And much more... Ep 836Telomere Testing: Everything You Need To Know About A Cutting-Edge New Longevity Test That Tells You Your Cellular Age.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/telomeretest Recently, I had my telomeres tested by the company "TeloYears", which offers a simple and surprisingly affordable in-home genetic test that reveals the cellular age encoded in your DNA, specifically by using something called a quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay. Teloyears measure your average telomere length by analyzing the DNA found in the many thousands of white blood cells (leukocytes) in just one drop of blood. Then, they enter your data into a mathematical model they derived from measuring telomere length at the population level to calculate your biological age in TeloYears, or the actual age of a typical man or woman whose telomere length is similar to yours. So, for example, my chronological age is 34, but my biological age (I was shocked) was far different. You find out what it was in today's podcast with my guest Jason Shelton. Jason Shelton joined Telomere Diagnostics in 2014 with nearly two decades of start-up, medical device, and consumer healthcare experience. Most recently, Jason was CEO of EarLens Corporation where he led the company’s efforts in product development, regulatory affairs, and operational milestones. Prior to joining EarLens, he served as Vice President of Marketing, Health Policy, and Clinical Affairs for Sonitus Medical, a medical device company marketing the SoundBite™ Hearing System. While at Sonitus he helped achieve critical milestones including product design, development, clinical trials, FDA clearance, reimbursement, and commercial launch in the US and Europe. Jason also held leadership positions at BioForm Medical, Align Technology, and SmithKline Beecham, Inc. (now GlaxoSmithKline). Jason received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from The Ohio State University and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What telomeres are and why they are so important when it comes to anti-aging and longevity...[14:40] -The results of the fascinating NASA twin study on astronauts on telomere length...[18:45] -Why different people of different ages and populations have different telomere lengths...[22:05] -How you can find out your age in "Teloyears" based on a single drop of blood that analyzes your white blood cells...[24:30] -How often to repeat a telomere test to see if what you are doing is actually working...[31:05] -How a "popular" Westernized version of a Mediterranean diet may be flawed when it comes to anti-aging effect...[33:00] -The best kind of exercise to do if you want to decrease the rate at which your telomeres shorten...[49:40 & 64:00] -And much more...
