Ep 1005The Go-To Self-Quantification Wristband Now Used By The Navy SEALs, Pro Sports, Top College Teams, Olympians & Beyond
It's been awhile since I've talked about the WHOOP self-quantification wristband. A few things we learned in my last podcast about this unique device, entitled "WHOOP: The Performance Enhancing Wearable That Tells You When To Sleep, How To Exercise, Your Strain Levels & More!, include: -The key defining characteristics that set WHOOP apart, including skin conductivity, accelerometer data, and continuous HRV monitoring… -Why WHOOP is the only company to measure the activity and fluctuations of the cardiac autonomic nervous system, particularly as it relates to recovery, training status, and training readiness… -The actual hard data being collected by the WHOOP, and HRV, pulse oximetry, temperature, respiration, etc.)… -Why the WHOOP uses a combination of PPG (photoplethysmography) sensors (4 LEDs and 1 Photodiode) along with 3-axis accelerometer, capacitive touch sensor, ambient temperature sensor… -How coaches and trainers can use WHOOP to monitor the sleep, training and recovery status of a large number of athletes and clients… -Why the WHOOP has 90% sleep/wake accuracy compared to gold-standard sleep labs… -How the WHOOP sleep coach automatically calculates sleep needed based on your sleep baseline, any sleep debt that has accumulated over the last few nights, and any naps taken for that day… -The technology the WHOOP uses to tell you how much sleep you need and to give you a picture of when you should go to bed based on your habitual sleep efficiency and desired wake up time… -Why athletes like LeBron James and Michael Phelps are using the WHOOP… And in the article The World On Your Wrist: How To Track Your Daily Strain, Recovery, Sleep & More (A Nerded Out Review Of The New WHOOP Wearable.), you got a complete user review of exactly how the WHOOP worked out when a member of my team put it through the ringer for sleep, activity, recovery and much more. Then in the follow-up podcast "The Reebok Crossfit Games, Half-Ironman Nutrition, Elite Athlete Diets & More: A Conversation With The WHOOP Team" we discussed how Crossfit athletes have been getting a ton of value out of the WHOOP. Today, Will Ahmed, the Founder and CEO of WHOOP, is back. At WHOOP, Will works with professional athletes across every sports league, college athletes across every conference, Olympians and the U.S. military. Ahmed has raised more than $50 million from top investors and has an active advisory board that consists of some of the world’s most notable cardiologists, technologists, marketers, and designers. He was named a 2011 Harvard College Scholar for finishing in the top 10% of his class and a CSA Scholar Athlete; he captained the Harvard Men’s Varsity Squash Team. Ahmed was recently named to Forbes 30 Under 30 and Boston Business Journal 40 Under 40. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What a WHOOP device is, and what makes it so unique...8:00 Unlock human performance. Understanding 3 core parameters about the body: Strain Recovery Sleep Focus is on collecting data: 100 mb per person per day. 100x more than other wearables. Much more accurate understanding of the body Strong focus on Heart Rate Variability (measured 24/7) Triangulating data points. Recovery is the most important measurement. What is measured in the realm of sleep. WHOOP data is comparable to PSG, considered the "gold standard" of sleep measurement. Used by the NFLPA for recovery wear. -Why there's a very dim light on the WHOOP device, and whether there's concern about it affecting quality of sleep...19:40 Blue light stimulates the IPRGC, which tell your circadian rhythm that it's daytime. Don't look at screens at night. WHOOP emits green light; less capable of stimulating those cells. If wearing correctly, you can't see the light at all. Light on the body of the U/V spectrum is problematic. Seeing light much more consequential, than light being emitted onto your skin. -About the actual electricity, Bluetooth, wifi signaling of the WHOOP...23:20 Two different things at work Frequency Power emission Low power emission has very little consequence, even with sustained exposure. Power emission is measured by level of communication. (Cell phones are very high) Bluetooth have very low power emission. WHOOP is not constantly transmitting data; every 6 minutes. WiFi is extremely high power emission. If phone is in airplane mode, WHOOP stops transmitting data. -The research WHOOP has been doing on meditation...32:10 Partnering with Head Space and Arsenal on a study. (can't discuss details) Study involving float tanks. Gives effects of sleep without sleeping. Similar to a meditation session. Monitoring HRV, respiratory rate, heart rate and motion Independent woman did a mindfulness study For 3 weeks, had no mindfulness practice. Then for 3 weeks, meditated 3-4 times per day. HRV increased while practicing mindfulness; quality of sleep improved. -WHOOP's work with Navy SEALS and Army Special Forces...35:45 Worked with Army ordinance unit. 40 participants Half could see

Ep 1004The Secrets Of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine Diet, Does A Morning Cup Of Coffee "Break Your Fast", The Best Time Of Day To Exercise & Much More!
Dr. Satchin Panda is a professor at the Salk Institute, La Jolla, California, and author of the new book “The Circadian Code: Lose Weight, Supercharge Your Energy, and Transform Your Health from Morning to Midnight”. Dr. Panda is a frequent speaker in international conferences on metabolism, exercise and chronic diseases. His research focuses on how circadian clocks regulate behavior, physiology and metabolism. His discovery of how a blue light sensor in the eyes affect sleep- wake cycle, depression and alertness is leading a new revolution in managing light to improve health. Recently he discovered that maintaining a daily feeding-fasting cycle – popularly known as Time-Restricted Eating (TRE) – can prevent and reverse many chronic diseases. Like most people, you probably wake up, get hungry for meals and doze off in bed around the same time every day. If you’ve ever experienced jet lag or pulled an all-nighter, you know that this schedule can easily be thrown off kilter. But for some people, that imbalance—difficulty sleeping at night, hunger at odd times, or sudden fatigue at noon—is a constant. If you're one of those people, Dr. Panda, one of the leading researchers on circadian rhythms, has a plan to reset your body clock. Beginning with an in-depth explanation of the circadian clock—why it’s important, how it works, and how to know it isn’t working—heoutlines lifestyle changes to make to get back on track. It's a concrete plan to enhance weight loss, improve sleep, optimize exercise, and manage technology so that it doesn’t interfere with your body’s natural rhythm. Dr. Panda’s life changing methods show you how to prevent and reverse ailments like diabetes, cancer, and dementia, as well as microbiome conditions like acid reflux, heartburn, and irritable bowel disease. During our discussion, you'll learn: -About TRE, and how it's related to the circadian code...6:25 You're mindful of your first and last calorie of the day; you want to intake calories within a set period of time each day. Why it's a time restriction, as opposed to a caloric restriction. TRE is more practical for the modern lifestyle than to restrict the food you eat with no time restrictions. Lab tests showed that mice ate the same amount of calories with TRE as without. Tests involving humans have shown that TRE has resulted in improved overall health. Good news for people who are tired of constantly being "cold and hungry" while trying to live healthy lifestyle. -The truth about Hugh Jackman's "Wolverine" Diet...10:30 Ate a lot of protein in a 8-9 hour window; resulted in putting on a lot of muscle for Wolverine. TRE is becoming a trend among Hollywood actors. Many body builders are using TRE; it's simply more practical and easier on the body. It's difficult to ascertain what is the best mode of TRE for each individual. Best to discover for yourself through trial and error. -How TRE affects endurance sport athletes...18:00 Tests have been conducted on mice, not humans thus far. Question was: will mice lose endurance when they have a small window of time for eating? Mice eating an unhealthy diet on TRE far outperformed mice with the same diet with no time restrictions on eating. -What is the optimal timeframe when utilizing TRE?...23:45 Most American adults eat more than 12, even 15 hours per day. The easiest (and healthiest) way to start incorporating TRE is to eat a later breakfast and an earlier dinner. -Why Dr. Panda believes that drinking a cup of coffee "breaks a fast"...29:30 Most people put cream and sugar in their coffee. Black coffee is preferable. A dependence on coffee to "get going" in the morning is an indication you're not getting enough sleep. By "fasting" Dr. Panda is referring more to resting your organs than not consuming calories. You can't repair a highway with traffic on it. Coffee can "reset" the circadian clock. A cup is akin to being exposed to an hour of bright light. After noon, coffee affects your ability to have deep, restful sleep at night. -About "Zeitgebers" and how you can use them to reset your circadian clock...38:30 We have "clocks" throughout the body. Light affects the "brain clock." Changing your eating schedule is a more powerful way to reset your circadian clock. Jet lag occurs more often after lunch. Eat a big breakfast, a smaller lunch or no lunch, and a good sized dinner. This may differ depending on your physical activity. -The best time of day to exercise...43:50 Late in the afternoon. Our ancestors had to get home (run) before dark. We've adapted to exercise better in the afternoon. "The circadian advantage": A West Coast based NFL team playing Monday Night Football on the East Coast has an advantage because of the time difference. -About "bi-phasic" sleep. Is it true that our ancestors would sleep, then wake up in the middle of the night, then go back to sleep?...48:00 "Common" does not equate to "normal." Our ancestors weren't as busy as modern people. We have a tighter window in which

Ep 1003Should You Or Your Kids Get Vaccinated? One Doctor’s Surprising Answer To Making The Big Decision On Vaccines.
Over the past fifty years, rates of autoimmunity and chronic disease have exploded. Currently 1 in 2.5 American children has an allergy, 1 in 11 has asthma, 1 in 13 has severe food allergies, and 1 in 36 has autism. While some attribute this rise to increased awareness and diagnosis, my guest on today's show, Thomas Cowan, MD, argues for a direct causal relationship to a corresponding increase in the number of vaccines American children typically receive - approximately 70 vaccine doses by age eighteen. The goal of these vaccines is precisely what we’re now seeing in such abundance among our chronically ill children: the provocation of immune response. In his new book Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness, Dr. Cowan looks at emerging evidence that certain childhood illnesses are actually protective of disease later in life; examines the role of fever, the gut, and cellular fluid in immune health; argues that vaccination is an ineffective (and harmful) attempt to shortcut a complex immune response; and asserts that the medical establishment has engaged in an authoritarian argument that robs parents of informed consent. His ultimate question, from the point of view of a doctor who has decades of experience treating countless children is... ...what are we really doing to children when we vaccinate them? Dr. Cowan, MD, is a veteran family physician who has studied and written about many subjects in medicine, including nutrition, homeopathy, anthroposophical medicine, and herbal medicine. He is the author of Human Heart, Cosmic Heart: A Doctor’s Quest to Understand, Treat, and Prevent Cardiovascular Disease and the new book Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness from Chelsea Green Publishing. He is also a founding board member of the Weston A. Price Foundation, and a frequent lecturer throughout the US and Canada. He's also the same doctor I mentioned in this Joe Rogan episode when I talked about how your "heart is not a pump". During our discussion, you'll discover: -Dr. Cowan's experience with a childhood friend with asthma, and how it turned him onto medicine...8:00 The child was teased by classmates. "How dare you be sick..." He was way out of the norm. Asthma is far more prevalent now than in the 60's. Increasing number of adults with autoimmune issues. A large number of people diagnosed with autism become institutionalized. -The story of William Coley's Toxins...12:50 "Give me a medicine to produce a fever, and I can cure any disease." --Hippocrates Coley was an oncology surgeon, specializing in osteosarcoma. Realized his conventional treatment of sarcoma (cancer) was not effective. Came upon a former patient who was scheduled to be treated for sarcoma. Wound up getting treated for erysypelas (induced fever); sarcoma went away and never returned. Experimented with induced fever treatment on his own patients. 40% were cured with this treatment. 40% mortality rate. Inducing fever was killing the cancer. Coley's Toxins has been banned as a practice in the U.S. since the 1960's. "When I'm treating someone for a condition who's symptoms include a fever...If we can cure that condition without alleviating the fever, I am preemptively pushing this individual away from cancer for the rest of their life." --Dr. Thomas Cowan -The two branches of the immune system...21:20 You get exposed to measles. Body is looking at infected cells. Mounts a white cell response: attack and digest infected cells and clear out of the body. Fever, rash, diarrhea. Basically what we call "being sick." "Being sick" is not the virus; it's your body rejecting the virus. If you inhibit the cell-mediated response, you can infect and even kill people. By eliminating the symptoms (fever, rash, diarrhea, etc.) you allow the virus to continue its attack on the immune system. Theory of vaccines: Purely antibody strategy. No cell-mediated immune system. Inject the virus along with aluminum, mercury, formaldehyde, etc. to force your body to produce antibodies. You end up with an accelerated antibody response. 2 problems with this strategy: You have zero possibility of developing lifelong immunity to a virus after it has passed. Every vaccine needs to have boosters. Just as susceptible as a newborn as an adult. Autoimmune disease is the situation of accelerated antibodies that are targeting your own tissues. Children who get chicken pox and measles have less major chronic disease later in life. CDC: Anyone born before 1956 is considered to be immune to measles. -Why the way current science believes cells operate in the immune system is flawed...31:30 The central paradox of mammalian cells: How does a cell live in a sodium-rich environment, yet has a sodium-poor internal milieu. Balance of sodium and potassium "charges" the cell like a battery. Lose the charge, you have a dead cell. Each cell has a "pump" that balances the sodium and potassium. Two problems with this way of thinking: Cells ar

Ep 1002Sexual Biohacking With Scream Creams, Testosterone Replacement, Multiple Orgasms, Vaginal Stimulating Devices, Salad Dressings For Better Erections & More!
In my previous interview with Dr. Amy Killen, we discussed... ...what PRP therapy is, and how it differs from stem cells, what happens when you inject stem cells into a man’s “unit”, and why Amy injected me, why Amy injects stem cells and PRP into vaginas, and how the O-Shot improves the power and duration of female orgasms, the secrets of the vampire breast lift and other cosmetic procedures she has done, what causes hair loss, and how to fix it with stem cells, what V-Sels are and how they work and much more. Today, Amy's back, along with world renowned sexual technique adviser and the “Dear Abby of Hot Sex”, Susan Bratton. Dr. Amy Killen is a nationally recognized anti-aging and regenerative physician specializing in sexual optimization and longevity. Dr Killen merges diet, lifestyle, and integrative medicine with stem cell medicine to give her patients the most effective, cutting edge therapies currently available to help them reach their sexual potential. An international speaker, clinical practice owner, regenerative medicine instructor and frequent podcast guest, Dr. Killen believes that sexual health is not a luxury but is one of the main pillars of health that supports us in our quest for wellness and longevity. Susan Bratton's fresh approach to sex techniques and bedroom communication skills help millions of people—of all ages and across the gender spectrum—transform sex into passion. Her straight-forward lovemaking advice is rooted in her personal experience of watching her marital intimacy wither as she and her husband pursued dynamic careers. When her relationship hit a crisis point, Susan made a fierce commitment to do whatever it took to hold her family together and revive the passion in her marriage. Today, she and her husband have the kind of dream relationship most people stopped believing was even possible—until they discover her practical tips. After 15 years and over 30k hours of research, practice, teaching, and testing, Susan distilled the six simple essentials that ignite passionate lovemaking into her latest #1 international best-selling book, Sexual Soulmates. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Susan's "6 Essentials to Connected Sex"...6:50 Susan and her husband had lost the emotional connection in their marriage. Tried everything from Tony Robbins conferences to group orgasm training sessions. This caused even more tension, leading to her home training programs. People began asking her for advice anonymously, contributing to her research. The 6 Essentials: Presence Context/Environment Sexual Soulmate Pact Polarity Embodied Sexuality Erotic Playdates (the couple that plays together stays together) Learning intimacy together grows the bond between a couple. -Tips for men to enhance their sex life...18:45 Men typically want more stamina; women want more orgasms. Focus on slow, steady, deep arousal. Get the tissue to engorge; increase bloodflow. -How Amy works with women to achieve better sex...23:25 PRP injections; O shot. Stem cells. Radio frequency devices, lasers "Scream creams" increase bloodflow, along with increased sensation Active ingredients: sildenafil (generic viagra) for men; tadalafil for women. Mindset, focusing on the experience is important too. -What people can do to enhance the sexual experience after a procedure like Gainswave...27:00 Intensity device. Balance hormones. Nitric oxide. Keep relationships and stress levels manageable. -How Susan incorporates things like supplements and diet into her teaching...27:15 Did a video series with Amy: 5 causes and 8 cures for ED. Salad Dressing for ED. This type of info is given away for free; used to make people aware of the training DVD's. -The history of the GAINSWave protocol...31:15 Technology has been around for many years, for things like increasing bloodflow to the heart. Sound waves simulate blood vessel formation, nitric oxide formation, recruiting stem cells into the penis. Not recommended to do a procedure outside of a reputable clinic. -Whether or not Susan has used the GAINSWave treatment, and how she incorporates it into her practice...38:45 Recommends men get the GAINSWave treatment with the P Shot. Use the penis pump. Dr. Joel Kaplan's is what she recommends. Dr. Kaplan also has a clitoral pump. -What Susan and Amy think about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for maintaining sexual performance with age...44:40 Once you use it, it's more difficult for your body to produce it naturally; use it only when you're naturally declining sexually. The benefits outweigh the need to be on them long term. Means of use: Injections, compounding creams, pellets under the skin, trokies. Too much testosterone is not a good thing. Ensure you're under the care of a professional. Men often lose their zest for life when they allow this to continue. Treatment can renew their energy and improve their quality of life. Women should start before menopause. How does low thyroid affect sexual performance: weight gain apath

Ep 1001How To Get Your Own Vitamin and NAD IV's, The Truth About Umbilical Stem Cells, Peptide Injections & Much More With Dr. Craig Koniver
It's no secret that for quite some time I've been doing a weekly self-administered 30ml "Push IV" (fully legal for athletes, by the way) with a potent cocktail of vitamins and glutathione, along with a weekly NAD IV. And while you may not be quite willing to hunt down a vein in your arm and administer your own IV, the doctor who I've been getting these IV's from is finally making his first appearance on my podcast. I've received plenty of questions about IV's (and stem cell infusions, and NAD IV's), and he's going to blow your mind with his broad range of knowledge on these topics. His name is Dr. Craig Koniver. Dr. Koniver has been practicing Performance Medicine for over 18 years and is the founder of Koniver Wellness in Charleston, South Carolina. Not satisfied with the disease-based model of modern medicine, Dr. Koniver seeks to help his clients optimize their health and performance through time-tested, nutrient and science driven protocols that are the cutting-edge of medicine. He is the founder and creator of the patent-pending FastVitaminIV® as well as re-engineering the NAD+ IV protocols, now called Brain Refuel™. Dr. Koniver’s client list includes Navy SEALs, NFL players, PGA golfers, Hall of Fame NHL players, world-class professional athletes, Fortune 100 Executives, well-known celebrities and TV personalities. In addition, Dr. Koniver offers a comprehensive training program of the Koniver Wellness Model to physician practices across the country. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What is performance medicine, and how did you get into it?... Family medicine trained; wanted to open his own practice. Saw an opportunity to meet a need in the market by focusing primarily on IV's. Realized that people just want to feel better; focus on that, and they'll be receptive to outside the box solutions. -Why is injecting into the bloodstream more efficacious than other means of injection (oral, etc.)?... We only absorb around 20% of nutrients we take orally via food, supplements, etc. (even less with gut issues) IV's are a more sure way of ensuring the nutrients make it into the bloodstream. Pneumonia is a high cause of death; you treat it via intravenous antibiotics. Same principle applies with nutrients. -What ingredients are in the different types of IV's that you make, and what do they do?... Biggest deficiencies in people are: B vitamins Magnesium Amino acids. Craig focuses primarily on these ingredients in his "core" IV, rather than having a large variety of options to choose from. The difference between a push IV and a drip IV, and which one is more effective: A push IV gets a much more robust response. 30 cc's vs. 500-1000 cc's. Focuses more on the nutrients than the water. It's technically the only way to get a professional vitamin IV. Magnesium: Conventional wisdom says to go slow, play it safe. Craig has found the opposite to be true. Never had an adverse reaction to it. Amino acids: Whey protein, BCAA, glutamine. A total of 19 different nutrients in the 30 cc's of fluid. -How can people administer these IV's without flying to Dr. Koniver's clinic in Charleston? There's a network of certified nurses around the country. People can purchase from the nurses and administer themselves, either at a clinic or in their home. -What is the Brain Refuel? Combination of Intravaneous NAD Plus, and the Fast Vitamin. Achieves the "sweet spot" where people can tolerate the IV (length of treatment) and derive the most benefits from it. NAD can't be mixed with any other nutrient; but the Fast Vitamin IV helped transport the NAD to the mitochondryia. -How to deal with the unpleasant experience of injecting the IV... Don't do it while you're stressed out, or just finished traveling; do it while you're in a "good place" mentally and physically. Breath work; relaxing music. "This too shall pass". Just like a workout sucks while you're doing it, you feel great afterwards. An IV is basically a workout for your cells. First NAD treatment is always the worst; once you realize it's safe, it's more tolerable in the future. No adverse side effects. -Whether or not the NAD treatment is absorbable into the cells, and any proof to back it up... Article: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is transported into mammalian mitochondria Glutathione is not to be mixed with NAD. -Dr. Koniver's work with stem cell infusions... Umbilical stem cells are freshest, most potent. Mitochondria directs how stem cells work. NAD 3 day program; inject NAD 3 days prior to stem cells. Safety concerns: Cleanliness, foreign cells, etc. Umbilical stem cells are immune naive; very low likelihood of a reaction. Stem cell banks, private companies developing safer practices. Frozen in liquid nitrogen, where nothing can live. Injected immediately after thawing out. Follow a clear protocol, do your due diligence to minimize risk. Are stem cells regulated by the government? Nothing significant. Stem cell companies require thorough documentation. Doctors admin

Ep 1000How I’ve Been Able To Gorge On Delicious Gluten Filled Foods Without Feeling Like I Swallowed A Pair Of Motor-Powered Scissors Tearing Up My Intestines.
I've been getting a lot of questions lately about the mysterious molecule I consume before I eat bread and pasta - a compound that allows me to digest gluten without any of the "bathroom decommissioning" that so notoriously occurs after a hefty bout of gluten consumption. After all, I don't want to not eat bread or pasta for the rest of my life. I find them enjoyable. But due to glyphosate exposure from pesticides and herbicides, stress, a leaky gut and other modern assailants that make gluten a bigger issue than it ever has been in human history, I use a bit of better living through science to make gluten digestible. In today's podcast, I interview the inventors of Gluten Guardian - Matt Gallant and Wade Lightheart - the guys who first appeared in the podcast "Probiotic Enemas, Digestive Enzyme Myths, Breathing 10 Kilograms of Oxygen, Low-Protein Diets & More!" and later in my article "How To Take Digestive Enzymes". Matt Gallant is an entrepreneur, a poker champion, an ex-rock guitarist, a serial entrepreneur (who's built 13 companies in the last 20 years) strength and conditioning coach with a degree in kinesiology, the CEO and co-founder of a company called BiOptimizers. Wade T. Lightheart, host of the AWESOME Health Podcast, 3-time All Natural National Bodybuilding Champion, advisor to the American Anti-Cancer Institute and Cofounder of BiOptimizers. He is also the author of several books including the best-selling books, “Staying Alive in a Toxic World” and “The Wealthy Backpacker.” MARGE LINK TO WADE'S BOOKS During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Matt eats between 6-10,000 calories every Sunday...7.36 For the calorie spike. One meal per day for 6 days. A combo of healthy and regular food. Matt feels great afterwards. He takes the day off from training. -Why we should be cognizant of our gluten intake, even if we don't have celiac disease...10:30 New England Journal of Medicine listed 55 diseases that can be caused by eating gluten. Many times we're not aware of these diseases; can be immune, neurological and psychiatric. Differences between wheat germ in the gluten and gluten itself. Different type of protein. Both are resistant to digestion. Can make the gut more permeable. (Leaky gut) Amylase/trypsin inhibitors come packaged with gluten - specifically wheat. What about other factors to leaky gut such as stress and glyphosate. 4x increase in celiac disease; traced to glyphosate interrupting the digestive process. Will continue to increase due to the exposure to glyphosate. -The use of enzymes in the preparation of food to increase its palatability...18:10 In a perfect world, you'd be eating pre-digested food primarily. You use enzymes to assist with breaking food down. -Do Matt and Wade recommend any panels for evaluating gluten sensitivity or gluten cross reactivity?...20:30 Anti-tissue trans glutaminase or endomysial antibody. Recommend Cyrex. Helps you know if other foods such as coffee or quinoa are exacerbating your level of gluten intolerance. Also testing gliad and peptide antibodies. How does gluten negatively affect the brain?...24:00 Inflames the brain by causing an auto-immune response. Antibodies intended to protect your body actually attack your body. During the digestive process, gluten can be broken down into proteins similar to psychedelic drugs. Has an addictive quality. Overloads the brain with glutamate. Irritates and damages brain cells. Negative impact on your social life. -What Wade REALLY thinks about Monsanto...29:50 They were written into protection against lawsuits by federal law during the previous administration. Demonstrable evidence of their products causing damage to the body. Has been bought out by Bayer. Food has essentially been mutated, much to our detriment. Destroy livelihoods of small farmers. -The product Matt uses to pre-digest gluten before you even eat it...37:00 Dipeptidyl peptidase 4, also DPP-4. Dissolves bread placed in water in 15 minutes (watch the video below) You take it while you eat. Does DPP-4 actually mitigate symptoms of gluten intolerance? Depends on the dosage. Can be taken as late as the day after eating. Citrusy foods have been found to inhibit DPP-4 Breaks down various hormones in the body such as insulin. -Does DPP-4 have any effect on foods not containing gluten?...45:00 Milk proteins, but not milk sugars like lactose. Good idea to add DPP-4 if you have a plant-based diet. Just mix and match until you find the right combination for you, and for the right meals. Safe for children to ingest. -More on Matt and Wade's diet and workout regimen...49:50 -How do HCL and hydrochloric acid work with Gluten Guardian?...54:55 Plays a supportive role Stomach acid decreases after the age of 35 Simulates the effects of apple cider vinegar P3-OM Optimal time to take is before bed or first thing in the morning, rather than meal time. -Matt plays "myth busters" with colonizing properties of probiotics...58:41 -Special offer from Matt and Wade...1:04:

Ep 999How To Eat 1 Meal A Day, Drink A Bottle Of Hangover-Free Wine Every Night & Manifest Everything You Desire In Life.
My bio on Todd White is extremely short. Fanatical biohacker. Wears the same uniform every day. Starts every morning with 40 minutes of meditation. Eats one meal a day. Drinks a bottle of wine each night. And that's it. But this guy runs incredibly deep and in today's podcast, filmed after I did a meditation session with the entire team at Todd's Dry Farm Wines office in Napa Valley, we have a rich and meaningful conversation about meditation, manifestation, gratitude, fasting, and, of course, everything you need to know about organic wine. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The morning ritual that Todd and his team do together every morning...6:13 They start work at 10 am to allow team members to "protect their mornings." "Circle of love." Usually lasts 60-90 minutes. Meditation Breath work Gratefulness therapy It's not a day of work; it's a day of creating. Todd sees himself in the "health" business, in addition to the taste business. The warehouse workers are the most poignant example of the efficacy of this practice. Warehouse workers are typically treated as objects by leadership. Todd sees them as the center of love, energy and light. It causes them to want to contribute and create. -The stringent hiring practices Todd uses to ensure the right people are hired...12:54 BTW, Dry Farm Wines is hiring! dryfarmwines.com/jobs The job descriptions include everything about the company, including the "Peace and Profit Manifesto". First rule: "We lead with love." Life, not business, questions; essay format. Designed to be self-selecting; they want people to "opt out" if they don't see themselves as a good fit. -Some of the unconventional work practices that Dry Farm Wines uses to balance life and work....17:08 Happiness is an internal mechanism of joy. Todd sees one of his role as a mentor and guide to his employees. The actual time of production or creation is around 6 hours. Very rare "emails to all"; no "reply all" at all. Unlimited paid time off. They don't sell any domestic wines; all grapes are from small organic farms in Europe. Sharing the culture of the company is as important as promoting the actual product at events, trade shows, etc. Communal meals; great parties. -The process by which Todd came to create a company with such a unique culture...26:00 Became an entrepreneur at the age of 17. Experienced a "grand failure" before founding DFW. Senior health care; 40+ employees. Good concept, but was in it for the wrong reasons. The things we say "no" to are more important the things we say "yes" to. Led to discovering meditation. Developed a set of 18 business rules; from that became DFW. In constant ketosis due to a daily 22 hour fast. You see a difference between grapes grown on a small family farm and organic grapes at a market. -Todd's tips for eating once per day...36:12 It's more psychological than based on physical needs. Helps to be in ketosis. Adds a lot of time to the day for work. Reduces decision fatigue. It's important to be around likeminded people; creates accountability. -Todd's definition of "biohacking" and how he applies it to his own life...45:24 "The art and science of how our behavior influences our biological and neurological outcome." Proverb: "To feel is to understand" You can feel when someone is beneficial for your body. Meditation is a practice, and has an aggregate benefit over time. Began meditating twice daily. Minimum of 20 minutes. Todd attributes the success of his business to meditation. Meditation allows us to quiet the mind. We live in traumatic thought. 95% of thoughts we have are thoughts we had yesterday. Teaches us to live in the present moment; stop the trauma of thought. Attachment leads to suffering. Meditation teaches us to look past the attachment to thoughts which block the abundance we were granted at our birth. It's impossible to be grateful and fearful at the same time. Before we can do, we must be. -Thoughts on The Master Key by Charles Haanel...54:42 We're all manifesting. The question is: what are you manifesting, and are you using the tools to manifest in the correct way? Also recommended: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Doesn't offer a "prescription": It offers an understanding. Was initially offered as a weekly correspondence course delivered via mail in 1912. Words become forms, which become vibrations. (self-fulfilling prophecies.) -Why Todd started Dry Farm Wines, and what he has learned about wine since then...1:01:15 Needed a better, healthier way to drink. (DFW is low alcohol.) Couldn't drink alcohol after becoming ketotic. Discovered "natural wines" by accident. Around .1% of all wine makers are natural wine makers. Wines are grown, not made. DFW wines are sugar free. Fermented with wild, native yeast. Most wines are fermented with GMO yeast. "Organic" wine does not mean "natural" or "clean." It simply means that the grapes are grown organically. In the U.S. the FDA approves 76 additives for wine. (Here's a list of the 76 additives.

Ep 998Is Liver Cleansing Bullsh*^t? The Pre And Post Blood Test Results of Ben Greenfield's 7 Day Liver Cleanse (& Exactly How He Did It).
Today's episode is - after the host of positive feedback I received from my last "solosode" deep dive into how to interpret your own bloodwork - another solosode. Long story short is this... ...I recently tested my liver enzymes and they were shockingly high... ...so I decided to test whether this whole "liver detox" thing actually works... ...and I walk you through exactly what I did (and the relatively shocking results) in today's show. Enjoy! In this Solosode, you'll hear... -Why I got my liver tested in the first place...5:48 When I got my blood panel done, my liver enzyme numbers were through the roof. High liver stress. Around the levels of non-alcoholic liver disease. My aspartate aminotransferase was 172. It's considered risky if it's above 40. My alinine aminotransferase was 83. Anything above 55 is considered risky. My alkaline phosphatase was also mildly elevated. High albumin levels. Inflammation was low, but had signs of significant liver stress. I wanted to test out the liver cleanses on the market. Create a doable detox that I can do at home, I can still workout, and can accomplish in a fairly short period of time. -About Liver Flushing...9:18 A liver is a central processing mechanism that cleanses 1.5 liters of blood per minute. Around 500 different biochemical reactions that occur within the liver. Division and breakdown of chemical substances: catabolism Synthesis of protein molecules: anabolism If any of the processes don't work properly, it will affect other processes' ability to work properly. Liver is more or less a purification plant for the blood. Plays a role in excreting both endogenous and exogenous compounds. Regrows rapidly, with around 10% of healthy liver tissue. Myth of Prometheus: Zeus punished him by chaining him to a rock and an eagle picks at his liver during the day. His liver would regenerate the same amount at night. Greek physician Hippocrates described "humors", one of which was yellow bile of the liver. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the liver holds your soul. Full of energy and power. Your "ki" is unable to flow when the liver is not functioning properly. Cleansing the liver involves amplifying these processes to work properly. Also assists with bile production; assists with the gallbladder. Bile in the gallbladder can condense and become "stones." If the bile isn't expelled, you can get congestion in the liver. -Some more basic terms you should know...15:05 Fatty liver: cells in the liver are saturated with fat. Intrahepatic bile ducts are full of bile but have a high concentration of cholesterol in them. The cholesterol in the liver accumulates, and you end up with excess. During a flush, the liver is encouraged to increase its excretory function to eliminate excess bile, and allow gallbladder to evacuate the bile. If you know what you're doing, you can regularly go to a liver clinic and maintain the health of your liver. Exercise can elevate liver enzymes to a certain extent, but high levels indicate more than just exercise is the problem. -The actual results of my lab test, post liver cleanse...19:21 In addition to elevated to elevated enzymes: Hormones were pretty good: free testosterone = 78. Total testosterone = 880. Sex hormone binding globulin = 84 (lower is better) GGT (gamma glutamyl transferase) is a good proxy for gallbladder health. My alinine aminotransferase dropped from 83 to 33. My aspartate aminotransferase dropped from 172 to 37. GGT was 15. Extremely low risk. Free testosterone jumped from 78 to 115; Total testosterone went from 880 to 1154. -What I ate for breakfast, lunch, dinner during my liver cleanse...25:10 Kitchari recipe for 3-4 servings: Ingredients: ½ cup split yellow mung beans 2 tablespoons coconut oil 1-inch stick of kombu (optional - I used organic, non-GMO miso instead) 4 cups homemade Kettle & Fire bone broth 2 tablespoons coconut cream Spices: 1½ teaspoons cumin seeds 1½ teaspoons fennel seeds 1½ teaspoons coriander powder 1 tablespoon ginger root freshly minced ½ teaspoon turmeric powder ½ teaspoon fenugreek seeds ¼ teaspoon black mustard seeds Pinch of asafoetida Vegetables: 2 cups of any mixed vegetables. I used bok choy, cilantro and dinosaur kale. To serve: Fresh lime A dollop of GT's Living Foods coconut yogurt Sea salt to taste Instructions: -The night before (24 hours earlier), soak the mung beans in ample filtered water. -When you’re ready to cook, drain the mung beans and rinse under running water. Place rice in a sieve and rinse till the water runs clear. Prepare vegetables by peeling and chopping them up, then set all of this aside. -Heat coconut oil over medium heat, in a heavy-bottomed pot. Add cumin, fennel, fenugreek and black mustard seeds and cook for a few minutes to release aromatics, and until the mustard seeds have popped. Add the rest of the spices and stir to combine. -Add a cup of vegetable stock, followed by mung beans, kombu or miso, coconut cream, rice and vegetables, then add the rest of

Ep 997Radical Metabolism: How To Cleanse Your Gallbladder, Increase Your Metabolism, Burn More Fat Without Exercise & Much More!
Anne Louise Gittleman was one of my first podcast guests ever. She first joined me in podcast episode #29: "How Many Critters Are Living In YOUR Gut, Making You Fat, Tired, Lazy, Bloated and Sick?" Now, she's back on the show. Ann came to my house in Spokane, WA to talk about her new, amazing book "Radical Metabolism: A Powerful New Plan to Blast Fat and Reignite Your Energy in Just 21 Days". This new book reveals the secrets to reviving a sluggish over-40 metabolism - secrets that work even faster if you're in your 20s and 30s, or you suffer from liver, gallbladder or thyroid issues. Inside the new book, you'll discover which "forbidden fats," forgotten flavors, and fat-busting beverages you can eat and drink in order to increase your metabolism, protect against autoimmunity, address gallbladder issues, type II diabetes, and other devastating health problems. The Radical Metabolism program consists of: -a 4-day Radical Intensive Cleanse designed to rest your digestive tract and detoxify your body -21-Day Radical Reboot where you'll learn exactly what combinations of foods to eat for results you can feel and see -a Maintenance Plan for a healthy life A Columbia University graduate, Ann Louise Gittleman is often called "The First Lady of Nutrition". She is a nutritionist, and internationally recognized as a pioneer in dietary, environmental, and women's health issues. As one of the world's foremost experts in functional and integrative medicine she holds an M.S. in Nutrition Education from Columbia University, has the title of Certified Nutrition Specialist (C.N.S.) from the American College of Nutrition and a Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition. Ann Louise has also served as the Chief Nutritionist of Pediatric Clinic at Bellevue Hospital and is the former Director of Nutrition at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Santa Monica, CA. She has won numerous awards, including The American Medical Writers Association Award for Excellence. In 2016 she was presented with the Humanitarian Award from the Cancer Control Society. She currently sits on the Advisory Board for the International Institute for Building-Biology & Ecology, the Nutritional Therapy Association, Inc. and Clear Passage, Inc. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why the gallbladder is such a crucial component of the Radical Metabolism program...8:40 Women in the U.S. are FFF: Fat, Forty and Fatigued. Gallbladder removal is one of the most common procedures in this country. It's not a "throw away" organ; we need to do everything we can to keep it. The "unholy alliance" between the gallbladder and the thyroid. If people do not have free-flowing bile (which they don't if they don't have a gallbladder) they can't convert successfully convert T4 into T3. Because the thyroid is so intimately connected to metabolism... People with sluggish bile are 7 times more likely to suffer from hyper thyroidism. Ben struggled with decreased thyroid activity while training for triathlons. People who do keto or paleo diets with high intake of fat are at risk; you need to be able to digest the fat and essential fatty acids. -Ann's thoughts on why the gallbladder and bile issues are so common among American women...13:00 Lack of choline. Study: 500 mg of choline 3x a day for 6 weeks will decongest a fatty liver. Choline is a lipotropic nutrient. We don't eat foods with natural lecithin; stigma surrounding soy products. Lack of bitter herbs in the diet. Natural sources of choline: Lecithin Eggs (if you're not allergic) Walnuts Sunflower lecithin supplement Bitter herbs Ann recommends: Grapefruit Diet (very popular in the 70's, with a resurgence in the 90's) Grapefruit extract influences mitochondria. Bitter melon extract. Ben's favorite cocktail: Bitter herbs, on the rocks, with a splash of gin. "Ben and Jitters" -How do we test for gallbladder function?...20:43 GGT High liver enzymes If light colored stool, dizziness, hearing problems all part of gallbladder meridian. Glutathione doesn't affect gallbladder. A bitter and resentful personality indicates gallbladder issues. Anger is associated with the liver; resentment is associated with the gallbladder. -Is Ann a fan of any of the cleanses out there to increase their bile levels?...23:00 No. Because of congested bile, they can get stuck in the gallbladder duct and create serious problems. The use of choline and bitters, then following Radical Metabolism... -What is the "correct" way to do a coffee enema?...25:25 Depends on the individual. Ensure the coffee is organic. Keep it inside you for 20 minutes; lay on your left side. Hazel Parcells: The grand dame of health. Black strap molasses. -The balance of omega 3 and omega 6 fats, and why there's such a thing as "too much fish oil"...27:45 We need a 4:1 ratio of omega 6 to omeg

Ep 996Magnesium Supplementation: Everything You Need To Know About Dosing Magnesium, Timing Magnesium, Forms Of Magnesium & More!
Magnesium deficiency is running rampant. Many experts estimate that 80% of Americans are magnesium deficient. And, a major contributing factor is the presence of excess calcium in the body mainly coming from the extreme ratio difference in common foods such as: fortified orange juice (27:1), cheese (26:1), yogurt (11:1), dairy (7:1) and the very commonly used antacids (300:1). Other common contributing factors include: -Fluoride -Processed foods -Alcohol -Coffee -Sugar -Stress -Medications When should you take magnesium? How do you test your magnesium levels or know if you have a deficiency? It’s critical to get high enough doses of magnesium to compensate for the fact that our typical diet runs low on this vital mineral. But fact is, although magnesium is an incredibly important mineral, there are many unanswered questions and confusion around magnesium, so I though it was high time to have my friend and nutrition researcher Thomas DeLauer back on the show. I first interviewed Thomas DeLauer in the episode The Ultimate Guide To Quelling Inflammation: Why Your Curcumin May Not Work, Surprising Effects Of Ginger Oil, Vegan Fish Oil Options & Much More! I then interviewed him again in the episode Does Alcohol Really Make You Fat, Which Alcohol Is Healthiest, Hidden Ingredients In Alcohol & Much More: The Ultimate Alcohol Damage Mitigation Guide. Thomas is one of the leading experts in the world of chronic inflammation as well as the response of the human body to a low-carb diet. He is noted for his personal transformation from a 280-pound overweight corporate executive to not only being on the cover of health and fitness magazines worldwide but pioneering some of the mainstream awareness of auto-immune diseases and inflammation in general! Thomas has been highlighted in over 20 magazines showcasing his transformation and has been featured worldwide on the cover of Ironman Magazine, Muscle and Performance Magazine, Natural Muscle Magazine, ICON Magazine, Platform Magazine and Ironman Japan. His background is in Sports Psychology, although it is this passion for psychology coupled with a career in healthcare as a physician recruiter and owner of an ancillary lab services company that sparked his love for nutritional science and what makes the body tick. He is currently working on a project in the 2nd phase of trials with Doctors at UCLA to identify a strain of bacteria that may help modulate inflammation within the body. Residing near Santa Barbara, California, with his wife, three dogs, two horses, and 11 month old son. Thomas promotes a lifestyle of living as close to the earth as possible to obtain the best possible results while still achieving maximum performance in every possible area of life. What form of magnesium is best, and are different forms better for different needs, like sleep vs. brain vs. digestion? In this episode, Thomas and I also discuss MagSRT®, a product Thomas is helping to develop, is the only time-release, high-potency magnesium supplement with peer-reviewed clinical trials to back up it's efficacy. MagSRT® was evaluated in the Scottsdale Magnesium Study (SMS), a placebo-controlled, human clinical trial of 91 participants. The study measured Serum Magnesium, Red Blood Cell (RBC) Magnesium, and Magnesium Deficiency symptoms. The results are published in the peer-reviewed Journal of American College of Nutrition (JACN). It is a Sustained Release Technology (SRT) magnesium in a super-absorbable, premium organic form called dimagnesium malate, along with an active form of Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) and Vitamin B6 (P5P) During our discussion, you'll discover: -Is there a way to supplement your magnesium levels without unpleasant side effects such as loose stool and "constarrhea"?...11:20 Magnesium is "hydrophilic" meaning it attracts water. It creates "passive diffusion" where it attracts water into the intestine. There's nothing to regulate how fast the water enters the small or large intestine. The type of magnesium (ex. epsom salt vs. magnesium citrate) one takes makes a big difference in how fast it will attract water. -A few of the more popular forms of magnesium, and which one is optimal for the varying functions we might like to use it...13:40 Magnesium citrate: high bio availability; creates a laxative effect. Magnesium chloride: Typically contains only 10-15% magnesium. It's used to chelate other minerals such as iron and other heavy metals. These two factors are why magnesium chloride is recommended for detoxes. Topical magnesium (epsom salt, etc.): Gets absorbed into the serum, but not red blood cells. Doesn't have the same laxative qualities. Only 1% of magnesium is ever measured, and that's in the serum and blood levels. Elevated magnesium levels in the serum means it's likely pulling it from blood and plasma, thus decreasing levels there. A high reading in magnesium can actually mean you're low in magnesium if you're only measuring it in the serum. RBC (red blood cell) magnesium

Ep 995The Real Truth About Genetic Testing, Why 23AndMe Is Not Enough (& The Most Advanced Genetic Test You Should Get Instead For Customizing Your Exercise, Your Diet, Your Supplements & More!).
Three months ago, I and my twin ten-year-old boys sent our saliva off to a lab in Canada for one of the most advanced genetic tests available. And I was blown away by what I learned. In today's podcast, I reveal the test that we took, exactly what we learned and how you can take the same test as we did. My guest is Dr. Karim Dhanani, who is the founder and Chief Medical Director at Toronto’s Centre for Biological Medicine, a clinic that is redefining North American naturopathic medicine for the 21st century. Dr. Dhanani’s clinic – a specially designed, ecologically sound facility set in pristine Canadian woodland – has become a global mecca for those seeking to live their lives at 100%. For Dr. Dhanani, the appeal of medicine was always the investigative aspect. He loves breaking down a tough problem, and systematically uncovering the root causes with diligence, discipline, and precision. After completing his education in biology, chemistry, and naturopathic medicine, he found his calling in German biological medicine, a branch of naturopathy that integrates cutting-edge science and precision with the millennia-old wisdom of natural healing techniques. But just learning in a laboratory setting wasn’t enough. Dr. Dhanani set off on a journey that took him from Canada to Europe to Africa and beyond, to understand what lies at the most advanced frontiers of Biological Medicine. Since establishing the Centre for Biological Medicine in 2002, he has transformed the lives of thousands of individuals, including athletes, scientists, and other doctors at the highest levels of their professions. His internationally renowned reputation – particularly in the naturopathic treatment of chronic degenerative disease – has led to research collaborations with Nobel Prize winners, and turned Dr. Dhanani into one of naturopathic medicine’s most sought-after speakers. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The fascinating history and world of biological medicine, and a German pioneer of medicine that Dr. Dhanani learned from...9:15 The goal is to identify the "root cause" of a symptom or problem. It's a combination of diagnostic tools and innovative thought processes. "We look to see what 'outside the box' is influencing what is 'inside the box.'" What is the relationship between biological medicine and bioregulatory medicine? Only substantive difference is that of vernacular. Both are looking at the body's capacity to heal; responses to symptoms, or "punches" to your body. Cell communication: we believe cells speak via biochemistry. Dr. Fritz Albert Popp: pioneer of biophotonic signaling of cells. The Baden Baden Biological Medicine conference in Germany. Energy medicine has a larger role to play than physical medicine. -The most interesting biohacks coming out of Europe, including the Mora machine for detoxification and new types of laser treatments for red blood cells...21:55 Just like we use words to communicate, certain bodies require light and sound to communicate. The Mora machine uses electronics and sound to drive specific frequencies into the system. We can increase the amount of glutathione in your body by simply giving the frequency of glutathione without injecting it. You're providing a mechanism to carry the molecule into the body energetically. Weber Intravenous Laser Therapy Different color lights (not LED) affects communication between cells. Depth of penetration of LED lights isn't as efficacious as lasers. -Where 23andme genetic testing falls short, and what Dr. Dhanani has discovered when it comes to the truth about genetic testing and genomics...29:18 You're only as good as the technology available. Tests must be 1) Accurate, 2) Reproducible and 3) Functionally relevant. 23andme uses "SNIPS" which are not functionally relevant; they're good for data collection and perhaps ancestry. For illustration: You don't assume the forest is unwell because one tree in it is unwell. Look at associations of SNIPS. MTHFR is one of many we can examine. Anywhere between 15-40% error rate with consumer tests like 23andme. CNV (copy number variance) D2C tests don't tell you whether you have one or two copies of a particular gene. You get a distorted view of your level of detox. The type of genetic testing is applicable for testing for illegal substances. 23andme also doesn't test for insertion/deletion genes. -Why Ben can't absorb Vitamin D from sunlight, and why he must supplement with Vitamin D instead...52:00 Vitamin D is actually a pro-hormone, more than an actual vitamin. 125 hydroxy vitamin D is the actual component. Some people are not genetically predisposed to absorb the 125 hydroxy from sunlight; it's necessary to transport it via supplements. Thorne Vitamin D and Vitamin K. -Why Ben and his twin boys now take glutathione every day (and why you must be very careful if you use any form of injectable glutathione)...57:30 Modern technology causes pollutants and stressors on the body that didn't exist 100 years ago. Ep 994A Deep Dive Into How To Interpret The Results Of Your Blood Testing - Ben Greenfield Reveals & Walks You Through His Laboratory Results From WellnessFX.
“How can I optimize my health and longevity?” “How can I live a long time and feel good doing it?” “What supplements should I take for peak performance?” “What should my ideal diet look like?” Honestly, without any data about your blood and biomarkers, you have no idea. This is because unless you know what your blood looks like under a microscope, there is no way for you to identify with 100% confidence what steps you should take to eat the right diet, to take the right supplements, to protect your health, to enhance your well-being, to perform at peak capacity, and perhaps most importantly, to live as long as possible with as high a quality of life as possible. Enter blood testing. Blood testing is the most important step you can take to identify and prevent life-threatening diseases before they happen to you. With your blood test results in hand, you can catch critical issues in your body before they manifest as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, or worse. Knowledge of exactly what is going on inside your body empowers you to implement a science-based disease-prevention program that can literally add decades of healthy years to your life. And if your goal is to not only stop disease, but to also perform at your peak physical and cognitive capacity, blood testing is absolutely crucial for identifying which diet, which supplements and which lifestyle steps you should take to optimize your specific and unique health parameters. But sadly, most annual medical check-ups that the average physician orders are simply routine, old-school blood tests that don't even test for the most important markers of disease risk, and that are simply designed to make sure you're “not dying”. They aren't designed to optimize longevity or to ensure your body is completely primed to perform at peak capacity. What most people don't realize is that you can skip your physician and simply manage the entire process for getting your blood work done yourself. And if you want to test absolutely every little thing that affects your organs, your energy, your hormones, your health and your longevity, then you've found the ultimate answer. I worked closely with WellnessFX, America's top laboratory for concierge blood testing and online access to all your blood testing results, to develop the Longevity Blood Testing Panel For Men and Longevity Blood Testing Panel For Women, which is the most complete blood testing package for men that money can buy. This is by far the most comprehensive blood testing package I recommend and is designed for the high performer, biohacker or anti-aging enthusiast who wants access to the same type of executive health panel and screening that would normally cost tens of thousands of dollars at a longevity institute. The panel I discuss in today's podcast dives deep into overall metabolic functioning for optimal long-term health and longevity, and includes thyroid function, stress response, blood glucose regulation, sex hormone balance, heavy metals, inflammation, organs of detoxification (liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and lungs), proteins, electrolytes, blood oxygen and nutrient delivery, immune system status, vitamin D status and much, much more, including: 25-Hydroxy-Vitamin D Apolipoprotein A-1 Apolipoprotein B Blood Lead Blood Mercury Cardio IQ Lipoprotein Fractionation Ion Mobility Complete Blood Count w/ differential Complete Metabolic Panel Copper Cortisol Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate Ferritin, serum Fibrinogen Folate Free Fatty Acids Hemoglobin A1c Homocysteine High-sensitivity C-reactive protein IGF-1 (Growth hormone surrogate) Insulin Iron, TIBC Lipid Panel Lipoprotein (a) Luteinizing Hormone Omega 3 Fatty Acids RBC Magnesium Reverse T-3 Selenium SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) T-3 Total T-3 Uptake T-4 (Thyroxine) T-3 Free T-4 Free Testosterone + Free Testosterone Thiamine Thyroglobulin Antibodies Thyroid Peroxidase AB TSH Uric Acid Vitamin A Vitamin B12 Zinc Estradiol As you can see, I've held nothing back and covered all bases with this customized blood panel. You will not find a test this comprehensive anywhere else, guaranteed. From identifying disease to optimizing longevity and anti-aging to maximizing performance, this test gives you absolutely everything you need. During this podcast, in which I cover my own results from my recent longevity panel, you'll discover: My own process of testing my blood. I had 19 tubes of blood drawn; you typically have 3-5 tubes drawn in a blood test. My motivation: What if you want the same type of blood test that would be tens of thousands of dollars at a longevity center? I wanted to advise myself with more precision than typical blood tests such as TSH. I designed a package with Wellness FX, for men and women. I do this on a quarterly basis; although once a year (or once per life) is sufficient for most people. First thing you see on the report: cardiovascular health. Basic lipid panel. Risk factors: Red (high caution); orange (pay attention); green (good to go

Ep 993The Official Edgy, Explicit & Epic Podcast With Me & The MindPump Crew: Longevity, Religion, Parenting, Biohacking, The Joe Rogan Debates, Snake Oil, Pseudoscience & Beyond.
Warning: today's podcast episode gets a bit...well edgy - even explicit. See, every so often, I get together with my fellow fitness-freak podcasting friends - the good fellas from the MindPump studios - and we take a rather rough around the edges, occasionally drug or alcohol infused, definitely entertaining and edgy foray into longevity to life to religion to parenting to biohacking and beyond. These always turn out to be incredibly popular podcast episodes, and this one promises to be just that. The hosts of Mindpump claim to “pull back the curtain on the mythology, snake oil and pseudo-science that pervades the fitness industry and present science-backed solutions that result in increased muscular development and performance while simultaneously emphasizing health.” T ake a gander at these fellas…as they seem to have the body composition and transformation equation pretty well figured out. They include… Sal DiStefano. Sal was 14 years old when he touched his first weight and from that moment he was hooked. Growing up asthmatic, frequently sick and painfully skinny, Sal saw weightlifting as a way to change his body and his self-image. In the beginning, Sal’s body responded quickly to his training but then his gains slowed and then stopped altogether. Not one to give up easily, he began reading every muscle building publication he could get his hands on to find ways to bust through his plateau. He read Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, Mentzer’s Heavy Duty, Kubrick’s Dinosaur Training, and every muscle magazine he could find; Weider’s Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Iron Man and even Muscle Media 2000. Each time he read about a new technique or methodology he would test it out in the gym. At age 18 his passion for the art and science of resistance training was so consuming that he decided to make it his profession and become a personal trainer. By 19 he was managing health clubs and by 22 he owned his own gym. After 17 years as a personal trainer he has dedicated himself to bringing science and TRUTH to the fitness industry. Adam Schafer is a IFBB men’s physique Pro and fitness expert. Adam made his entrance into the fitness world 14 years ago and has continued to send shock waves throughout the community ever since. He is a man of many talents who wears many hats. He is first and foremost a certified fitness expert who has an insatiable desire to help people in need of major lifestyle changes and daily accountable motivation. He is also incredibly driven entrepreneur and business minded individual with a vision that continually challenges his colleagues and peers to think bigger and achieve more. Justin Andrews has an incredible passion to disrupt the personal training industry and create ground breaking programs and tools that fitness professionals and clients alike can benefit from. The fitness industry in general needs a massive face lift to speak more to the generation growing up with a more advanced technology tool kit. Justin’s approach is to create programs that utilize technology as it advances and cut through the millions of options people face everyday when seeking specific information relating to their fitness needs. The great thing about where we are today is how easy it is to access information, the bad part about accessing all this information is how much misinformation is out there to weed through. As a health and fitness professional with a proven track record here in the heart of the Silicon Valley, Justin Andrews will keep working tirelessly to keep people educated and connected to quality personal trainers long into the future. Doug Egge received his first gym membership as a gift from his dad when he was 16 years old. Rocky III had just come out and he was determined to build a body like Stallone. It never happened. Despite following the advice of muscle magazines and busting his butt in the gym, Doug saw minimal gains over the next 30 years. Then he was introduced to Sal Di Stefano by his chiropractor who recommended he work with Sal to eliminate muscle imbalances that were causing lower back issues. Sal’s unique approach, often 180 degrees different from what Doug had read in books and magazines, produced more results in a matter of months than he had experienced in the 30 years prior. Doug with an extensive marketing and media production background, recognized Sal’s unique gift and perspective was missing from the fitness world and suggested that they should join forces. Doug and Sal have since produced life-altering programs such as the No BS 6-Pack Formula and MAPS Anabolic. Doug is very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Adam and Justin as Producer of MindPump. In this epic 2+ hour conversation with the MindPump guys, you'll discover: -Health hazards of the new nicotine vapor pens...7:40 Hyper-concentrated amounts of THC. Ep 998Shining Laser Lights On Your Balls & Beyond: Photobiomodulation 101 - How To Use Near Infrared & Red Light For Collagen, Thyroid, Muscle, Skin & More.
For some reason, I've gotten a reputation as a guy who "shines light on his balls". Perhaps it was this Men's Health magazine article, in which I discuss a form of light therapy called "photobiomodulation" as a way for guys to increase sexual performance, sperm count and testosterone. Or perhaps it's because I've described on multiple podcasts how I pull down my pants for 20-30 minutes a day while I'm at my desk, and "bathe my balls" in red and near-infrared light, using a device called a "Joovv". Turns out the benefits of photobiomodulation go far beyond your nether regions. Heck, this recent study even hinted at the fact that perhaps it should actually be banned as an illegal performance-enhancing drug! On today's podcast, I discuss photobiomodulation ins and outs with two experts in the field: Justin Strahan and Scott Nelson. Not just any man can take his wife's dream and make it a reality. This is just one of the reasons why Justin is so special. Justin's affinity for process and extreme attention to detail is why we are lucky to have him as head of R&D. The two words we would to describe Justin are intuitive and thorough. Prior to inventing and developing the Joovv, he spent his career as an engineer managing design and development teams. He also has six children, and can apparently play drums and trumpet like it's nobody's business. Scott is the impetus, power, and energy that set Joovv in motion. As head of commercialization, his ability to metabolize information quickly makes him an irreplaceable asset. The two words we would use to describe Scott are efficient and personable. Prior to cofounding Joovv, he spent his entire professional career in leadership positions with some of the largest medical device companies in the world, including Medtronic, Covidien, Boston Scientific, and C.R. Bard. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The intriguing history of photobiomodulation (PBM) and the JOOVV light...11:11 All types of health benefits from a wide range of wavelengths. Sunlight is optimal Red (600-670 nanometers); near infrared (800-880 nanometers) Visible Red light is considered near infrared. Far infrared is useful for heating tissue (over 3000 nanometers); you can't see it. Comparing research between red and near-infrared light. Original PBM devices were lasers. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) Difference between LED and lasers: light source itself. Laser is a specific wavelength. LED is tight range, but not a coherent beam. Photo medicine is still a niche field. Most older academics say that it's based on laser therapy, younger professionals say with newer LED light, you can deliver the same level of intensity over a much broader treatment area. How is LED light different from sunlight? Americans spend around 93% of their lifetime indoors due to their work and lifestyle. PBM harnesses specific wavelengths; restores healthy function to offset stressors such as wifi, bluetooth, etc. It's similar to supplementing our diets with a smoothie or multivitamin. It doesn't contain the UVA or UVB, blue light, etc. -The compelling research behind phototherapy for everything from testosterone to collagen to thyroid to muscular recovery and beyond...21:00 Wide-ranging benefits: skin health, muscle recovery, thyroid function. Supported by over 3,000 peer-reviewed manuscripts. Over 200 placebo-controlled trials. Restores natural skin health. Red light is studied for skin health; near infrared often used for joint pain studies. Are JOOVV lights effective for controlling acne? The effect of red lights on the eyes. Will it damage your eyes to stare at a JOOVV, or will it even help them? Proven to help degenerative eyes. Near-infrared a bit more comfortable to the eye. Begin treatment with eyes closed; then open eyes if you feel comfortable. JOOVV elite allows you to use only near-infrared light. JOOVV devices are registered with the FDA, Class 2. How red and infrared light affects collagen production. It increases collagen production, helps restore joint health. Copper and green light have been shown to enhance benefits of light therapy. Can PBM mitigate circadian rhythm or exposure to artificial light? Sun gets a "bad rap"; unfairly associated with skin cancer. Studies prove that red/infrared light increase levels of melatonin. -Is PBM effective in attaining weight loss?...41:30 Not necessarily weight loss, but there is a "slimming effect". Some studies have shown that red light helps in increasing metabolism. Red light has been shown to mitigate the effects of sleep deprivation. -Why PBM is now under consideration for classification as a "performance enhancing drug"...41:30 Meta-analysis claimed that red light builds up muscle tissue. Near-infrared waves have had a profound impact. -How PBM affects stem cells...49:30 -The effect of using PBM on your neck for thyroid issues...51:30 -The optimal amount of PBM to which you should expose yourself per day...54:23 It's difficult to test the power output of a device.

Ep 997Biohacking Alzheimers, Age Reversal, Young Blood, Stem Cells, Exosomes & More!
You've no doubt heard of it by now... In an attempt to live longer, some anti-aging enthusiasts are getting themselves injected with the blood of young humans, via a process deemed: plasmaphoresis. This podcast is about several age reversal therapies. It's also about biohacking Alzheimers. It's about all these therapies (senolytics, exosomes, gdf-11, etc) that scientists have been talking about for age reversal. The podcast is about biological aging clocks and biomarkers to measure them. You'll learn about ways that you can biohack Alzheimer's disease, how to measure your biological age, how to reverse aging, what the biggest obstacle to age reversal is, how to get more involved in the anti-aging community and more. About the Guests Mark Urdahl, is a technology entrepreneur from the Silicon Valley. He has numerous patents and has worked in big data. He began his career at IBM's medical instruments subsidiary that pioneered plasmaphoresis. Mark founded the Youngblood Institute to advance new uses for well established therapeutic plasma exchange therapies which have recently evidenced a previously undocumented potential to rejuvenate the body's own stem cells, restore aging immune systems, and prevent the onset of many age-related disease condition, so that we might live healthy as we age and ultimately live longer lives. Tom Ingloglia first appeared on this podcast in the episode "The Next Big Anti-Aging Drug: Everything You Need To Know About “NAD”." As you learn in that episode, Tom is a private investor with a master’s degree in finance. In the midst of trading, investing in technology and developing real estate in Costa Rica, Tom became very sick. He was initially prescribed antibiotics, suffered from an adverse reaction and was told that he’d have stomach problems for the rest of his life. In the years that followed, Tom also developed severe food allergies. His symptoms worsened, and he next began dealing with insomnia, anxiety, muscle pain, tendinopathies, joint pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, altered and clouded cognition and headaches. He finally had a mental breakdown in 2008. After a prolonged period of taking antibiotics, Tom began experiencing tendonitis throughout his fingers, hands, wrists and ankles and feet, so he started taking pain medications to relieve this pain. He had to give up his career in trading because his sole focus for the next eight years would be on finding a cure to his growing symptoms. His life consisted of working with physical therapists, going to the gym, going to new doctors, and trying new foods to see if it would help. Throughout Tom’s eight-year battle, he was prescribed consistently and persistently more medication. For six years, he was taking excessive amounts of Hydrocodone and Tramadol every day. Tom became obsessed with researching symptoms and treatments, and learned about the NAD+ treatment. He visited a clinic, and on Day 7 of his treatment, “It hit me. I started feeling better. I felt amazing. There was a calm that came over me. I felt safe. I just had no cravings for drugs or pain meds. There was no need for them. I just didn’t have the excruciating pain that I had before. I felt eight years of pain melting away.” Tom has nearly fully recovered, using related treatments to NAD+, and has engaged two cofounders to assist him in building out a facility to help bring this treatment to others in similar situations. In my conversation with Mark and Tom, you'll discover: -The history of The Young Blood Institute and how "heterochronic plasma exchange" works...16:00 Heterochronic plasma means simply removing old plasma and replacing it with "young" plasma. Others are experimenting with this concept. What Mark does is different from a plasma "infusion." Plasma is approximately half of our blood volume. Mark began with IBM Biomedical Systems, who had invented what we now call the "blood cell processor." -The intricate means of testing used on mice...22:15 Basically creating "siamese twins" with mice by stitching them together. Similar procedures have been conducted on humans for over 50 years. Mark wanted to recruit the best medical professionals to the Young Blood Institute. Many of them have been doing it for 30-40 years. -What, if any, are the risks of these plasma exchanges...29:10 Roughly a 4% risk of a transfusion reaction, which is akin to what you might experience donating blood. One of the safer procedures in the medical field today. You go through 6 exchanges as part of a protocol. -The network of doctors that Mark and Tom have built to do a plasma exchange...32:42 There are medical professionals all over the U.S. that can do the procedure. Submit an inquiry on the Young Blood Institute website to find a doctor that is near you. -What anti-aging biomarkers Mark is tracking at the Young Blood Institute...34:51 They have more technology testing capability than Stanford, Johns Hopkins and Harvard combined. Key technology: time of flight mass cytometry. Singl

Ep 992The Single, Most Comprehensive Stem Cell Procedure Known To Humankind: How A "Full Body Stem Cell & Exosome Makeover" Works.
What you are about to discover in this podcast is one of the most advanced, fringe, cutting-edge biohacks and forays into self-experimentation I've ever done... ...a full body stem-cell makeover at the Docere Clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah...including a little-known type of compound called an "exosome". Dr. Harry Adelson, my first guest on today's podcast, began his training in regenerative injection therapy (prolotherapy) in 1998 while in his final year at The National College of Naturopathic Medicine, in Portland, Oregon after having been cured of a rock-climbing injury with prolotherapy. During his residency program in Integrative Medicine at the Yale/Griffin Hospital in Derby, Connecticut, he volunteered after hours in a large homeless shelter in Bridgeport, Connecticut, providing regenerative injection therapies to the medically underserved while gaining valuable experience. He opened Docere Clinics in Salt Lake City in 2002 and from day one, his practice has been 100% regenerative injection therapies for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain conditions. In 2006 he incorporated platelet-rich plasma and ultrasound-guided injection into his armamentarium, in 2010, bone marrow aspirate concentrate and adipose-derived stem cells, and in 2013, fluoroscopic-guided injection (motion X-ray). Since February of 2010, Dr. Adelson has performed over 4,000 bone marrow and adipose-derived adult stem cell procedures, placing him among those most experienced in the world with the use of autologous stem cells for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain conditions. Dr. Amy Killen is also a guest on today's show. She joined Docere Medical after moving to Utah from Portland, Oregon, where she was the Medical Director of an anti-aging and regenerative medicine specialty practice. Dr. Killen’s medical training began in Dallas, where she attended medical school at UT Southwestern and received her M.D. degree, graduating in the top 10% of her class. She completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona and served as Chief Resident during her final year. After working as a board-certified emergency physician for more than 7 years, Dr. Killen began studying and training in anti-aging, regenerative, and aesthetic medicine in hopes of approaching patients’ wellness and beauty from a different perspective and with a new toolbox of innovative and effective treatment options. Advanced training has included completion of the fellowship in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine through the American Association of Anti-Aging Medicine and certification training in Age Management Medicine. Dr. Killen is certified by the National Institute of Medical Aesthetics in both basic and advanced cosmetic injections and trained with Dr. Lisbeth Roy to learn the O-Shot and P-Shot PRP procedures. Further PRP injection training was provided by PRP Life Lift and she completed the Hair Coach certification program with Dr. Alan Bauman in Florida, which taught a comprehensive approach to non-surgical hair loss. Dr. Killen learned how to extract and process stem cells as part of the U.S. Stem Cell Training Course taught by leading stem cell scientist Dr. Kristin Comella. Dr. Amy Killen has also spent many hours in the operating suite learning directly from Harry Adelson N.D. at Docere Clinics. Dr. Killen has spoken nationally about PRP and stem cell therapies and teaches a physician training course for ApexBiologix outlining current best practices for using regenerative therapies in aesthetics and sexual optimization. During my discussion with Harry and Amy, you'll discover: -How Harry got started with prolotherapy and PRP for pain management in farmers and construction workers... -The “Stem Cell Theory of Aging", which states that biologic aging is a result of loss function and population of stem cells in musculoskeletal tissues... -How Harry is harvesting stem cells from bone marrow, supplementing them with exosomes (the “currency” of stem cells, the inter-cellular communication blocks), and then injecting them into all major moving parts as well as skin of face, scalp, and penis... -Why exosomes may be the future of stem cell therapy... -Why umbilical and amniotic stem cells could potentially be dangerous due to exposing the body to foreign DNA... -What "MSC's" are, why are they different and better than other stem cell therapies, and how they differentiate into musculoskeletal tissues and have been called “medical signaling cells” because they trigger the healing of damaged tissues... -Why somebody would undergo a full body stem cell treatment, and whether is it going to "rejuvenate all of the cells in my body"... -What to expect after a full body stem cell makeover... Interview with Dr. Amy Killen: -What PRP therapy is, and how it differs from stem cells... -What happens when you inject stem cells into a man’s "unit", and why Amy injected Ben... -Why Amy injects stem cells and PRP into vaginas, and how the O-Shot improves the power

Ep 991The Most Powerful Cellular Exercise Machine That Exists, How It Works & Exactly How To Use It.
On my bedside is a tiny handheld unit called a “Flexpulse”, which I consider to be a small, portable “DJ for my brain”. By adjusting the frequency emitted by the device, I can use a 3Hz frequency to lull my brain into relaxed Delta brain waves, a 10Hz frequency to generate focused Alpha brain waves or a 23Hz frequency to produce high alert Beta brain waves. The Flexpulse generates a special kind of frequency called “PEMF”, and I’ve personally found that placing the square pad of unit on the back of my head (directly on my occipital bone) for a night of sleep or a quick nap (often combined with the Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation you’ll discover later in this article), I can knock myself out in no time flat for a perfect portion of slumber. Lately, I've been experimenting with an even more affordable alternative to the Flexpulse that seems to elicit very similar results: the ICES M1, which, in particular has been shown to increase blood flow in joints for up to three years after a single use! While small, portable devices like this are a perfect introduction to the wide variety of potential therapeutic applications of PEMF, the true “Cadillac” of PEMF therapy is a very large unit – about the size of a massage table – called the PulseCenter XL Pro. Both myself and Tony Robbins, Gerard Butler, Brandon Routh, Stevie Wonder and Rick Rubin are huge fans of this massive, whole-body-treatment setup, which can be used for everything from muscle sprains to headaches to sleep induction. Lots of American Ninja Warriors, countless Nike Master Trainers, lots of professional athletes who wish to remain anonymous for fear of having their secret weapon yanked, high profile biohackers, MLB, NBA, NFL players, high profile sports team owners, motivational speakers, entrepreneurial leaders and even professional bull riders. A few months ago, a guy named Emilio Palafox came to my house to train me on this table. The guy is a wealth of knowledge on PEMF therapy so I figured I should get him on the show! Emilio is the Channel Development Manager at Pulse Centers, spreading awareness of the game-changing, disruptive Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field (PEMF) technology. Emilio looks to identify individuals, organizations and corporations that are looking for healing, faster recovery, peak performance or all of the above. Emilio speaks about being the rising tide that lifts all boats and has been collaborating with people and organizations across the world that want to help impact humanity for the better. He is extremely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Pulse Centers team, helping to lead and shift the collective consciousness of health, wellness, fitness and longevity. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How PEMF works...10:30 -How the cells respond to magnetic signals...14:45 -Why the earth has actually changed in terms of the grounding and earthing effect it's able to produce...19:00 -Why the PulseCenters table feel so much more powerful than the other PEMF devices...23:30 -The difference between PEMF frequencies, intensities, etc...28:30 -How to use PEMF to "charge" the brain or get nootropics delivered more efficiently to the brain...35:30 -How to use PEMF to treat areas like the testes, colon, heart, liver, etc...38:30 -The difference between the paddles vs. the rings vs. the chair vs. the bed...51:00 -How to use PEMF to increase stem cell production...57:00 -Whether you can overuse PEMF...1:05:15 -How the PulseCenters portable system works...1:08:00 -And much more... Ep 990Why A High-Fat, Ketogenic Diet Chock Full Of Saturated Fat, Coconut Oil & Butter Could Be Destroying Your Brain (& What To Do About It).
Several months ago, in this weekly roundup, I commented about the book "Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life", and said: "I’ve just finished reading an advance copy of this book, written by my friend and former podcast guest, Max Lugavere. At first, I figured it would be another “eggs, walnut and fish make you smarter” type of book, but instead, this manuscript took a deep, deep dive into specific genes that affect intelligence and how to pair them with food, mouthwatering recipes for everything from liver to avocado-salmon bowls, and some very good, step-by-step tips for optimizing your personal environment to enhance your cognition. It is a must read, with many pages folded over in my own copy." Max, a former podcast guest in the episode "The Surprising Facts About What Bread Does To Your Brain (And What You Can Do About It)" also created the documentary "Bread Head". In the film, he explores the impact of our diets and lifestyles on brain health. Max is a also filmmaker, health and science journalist and author. He is the host of the podcast, The Genius Life. Ep 989The Best Sexual Biohacks, Can Vasectomies Decrease Testosterone, Foods & Supplements For Boosting Nitric Oxide & Much More.
Since my big "sexual enhancement" article in the January 2018 edition of Men's Health Magazine, I've been getting plenty of questions from both men and women about how many of these so-called sexual biohacks actually work. So I decided to get an expert on the show to talk about this stuff. Dr. Judson Brandeis is a private practice Urologist in Walnut Creek, California. He has been voted by his peers as a top Urologist in the San Francisco Bay area for the past 4 years. He is a pioneer of using technology in urology and was a very early adopter of robotic surgery, lasers and MRI targeting for diagnosing and treating prostate cancer. Dr. Brandeis is now a thought leader in using GAINSWave therapy for treating erectile dysfunction and developing supplements for improving male sexual function. Dr. Brandeis has always been enthusiastic about athletic performance. He ran track and cross country for Brown University and has competed in triathlons since 1981. He brings his passion for helping men achieve their goals every day to the Pacific Urology Male Performance Center in Walnut Creek, CA. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How GAINSWave works for men, and why it's different than just "sound therapy"...11:15 -How FEMIWave works for women, and what to expect during and afterwards...16:30 -Judson's discovery of "triple therapy" to increase nitric oxide levels...21:45 -Why fermented beets do such a good job boosting nitric oxide...25:30 -The importance of L-citrulline and red beet extract, Muira Puama and Asian ginseng...33:00 -Ben's unfortunate incident with a digital penis pump...39:30 -After having done 3,000 vasectomies, Judson's opinion on the safety of vasectomies, particularly on testosterone production...43:45 -Whether a vasectomy is reversible...46:30 -How to stop a testosterone treatment once you've been on it...50:00 -What to do about erectile dysfunction from long periods of time in a bike seat...54:30 -How stem cell injections into the penis work...1:01:00 -And much more! Ep 988How To Find Your Purpose In Life In 40 Days Or Less: Dissolve the Hidden Blocks That Keep You Stuck & Finally Thrive Based On Your Life’s Unique Purpose
If you've been paying attention to my anti-aging and longevity advice of late (such as this week's article on simple and natural habits for enhancing longevity), you no doubt are aware that one of the best things you can do for yourself is to find your purpose in life. If things haven’t been going the way you’ve planned, and especially if you've felt completely stuck in life, know this: everything changes the moment you discover your life’s unique purpose. Success, love, abundance, health and well-being, and vibrant energy are all by-products of leading a purpose-filled life. But maybe you don’t know what your life’s purpose is, or you don’t believe you have one, or you thought you knew what it was and you lost it. If that’s the case, then this podcast is for you. In the latest book from today's podcast guest Mastin Kipp, you're guided on a 40-day journey, inspired by Joseph Campbell’s model of the hero’s journey, to identify and dissolve whatever’s holding you back, break free from trauma and victimhood, and transform your life. Mastin is an American entrepreneur, best-selling author, and renowned public speaker and the creator of Functional Life Coaching™. Ep 986Why You May Have A Head Injury Or Concussion (Even If You Don't Know It) And What To Do About It.
Four months ago, I was at a party in Park City, Utah that happened to be chock full of chiropractic physicians. While I was leaning against the bar mixing myself a white wine kombucha spritzer, as I'm prone to do, a doctor named Steve Geanopulos approached me and introduced himself. Sensing I was a fellow physiology geek with his science-spidey sense, he proceeded to fill me in on a fascinating paper entitled "The Potential Impact of Various Physiological Mechanisms on Outcomes in TBI, mTBI, Concussion and PPCS." He then went on to explain that this paper, which we'll discuss in today's podcast along with plenty of other neural fixing and neural enhancing topics, forms the basis of the care he provides for his chronic brain based patients (not only concussion but anyone who struggles with movement, sight, focus, attention, or other brain based issues.) We also discussed the work Steve does with professional and collegiate athletes and concussion with his colleague Ben Velazquez, and the work he's done with a guy named Guy Voyer over the past 20 years with ELDOA - a form of fascial stretching that I personally incorporate in my own training and my clients' protocols. He described his approach as a "neuro-chemical, neuro-immunological, neuro-mechanical approach". So why is this guy exactly? Dr. Steven G. Geanopulos, affectionately known as ‘Dr G’, is a speaker, writer, and leader in the world of functional neurology / functional medicine and is quickly becoming one of America’s leading experts in lifelong, optimized living. His experience and clinical approach has proven that diminished health and vitality can be reclaimed by just about any proactive person at any age. Dr G.’s principles of practice cover the 5 essential keys to resolving the underlying cause of health problems and performance concerns including; assessing the nervous system for interference, endocrine system, detoxification systems, nutrition and fitness. Dr. G has completed his postgraduate studies in the field of Functional Neurology and attained board certification through the Carrick Institute, a distinction shared by fewer than 700 people worldwide. Dr. G is a lifelong learner and has completed hundreds of hours of training in the fields of chiropractic neurology and functional medicine. The material he shares covers everything required to take control of your health, while dispelling the ever-growing number of fallacies and myths related to this subject. Dr. G’s fascinating and refreshing approach to body transformation focuses immune function, brain function, nutrition, management of our personal environment, exercise and hormone balance. Dr. G currently practices virtually with clients and sees patients from all over the world with his main practice located in New York City. His practice has 3 main areas of focus: 1. Brain health 2. Metabolic health 3. Structural and functional integrity and optimization. These 3 areas of focus are intimately connected and require Dr. G’s unique expertise. Eventually, I made it to New York City to meet with Steve and also meet his colleague there: Benjamin Velazquez Pagan. Ben's qualifications include: -Licensed Soma-Trainer (Performance Physical Therapy) -Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach -Member, International Sports Sciences Association -Member, National Strength & Conditioning Association -Member, American College of Sports Medicine -Co-Contributing Author, “Fascia – Clinical Applications for Health and Human Performance.” As a competitive athlete, Benjamin Velazquez realizes the value and potential that comes with a scientific sports program. As a Performance therapist, his goal is to bridge the gap between cutting edge science and today's athlete. Ben's professional experience includes Managing Partner and Director of Human Performance of Sports Lab NYC LLC; President of Grey Matters Sports Group LLC. He designs programs and coaches his New York clientele that ranges from elite athlete to high profile celebrity. In addition to a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Science, Ben holds several certifications, which include NCSA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, Licensed Performance Soma- Therapist, ACSM Exercise Specialist, ISSA Sports performance Nutritionist, and many more. Ben's client roster includes: -22 current and Former N.H.L. Athletes, -18 current and former M.L.B. Players -5 Division 1 NCAA Soccer Players -12 Current N.F.L. Athletes. -The Women’s 2006 Track Team at University of Texas. Ben has also worked with the Saskatoon Blades Hockey Team 1999-2000, the 2003 national champion New York Freedom Soccer Team as well as 5 Athletes at The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Ben has spent the last two years researching the use of corrective exercise in mitigating the risk factors of concussions in athletes. Along with his team at Grey Matters Sports Group, he has successfully worked with athletes from five different sports that were recovering from multiple concussions. He and his team hav

Ep 984The Hardest Hike In America, How To Train & Eat For Altitude, Dangerous Ingredients In Supplements & More With Craig Dinkel of Biotropic Labs.
In the podcast episode “Shattering World Swim Records On 25-Piece Fried Chicken Buckets, Climbing Mountains While Eating Defatted, Vegan, Grass-Fed, Argentinian Liver Anhydrate & Much More” I interviewed athlete and supplement designer Craig Dinkel about a special blood oxygenating formula called “Biotropic”. After that interview, I received an onslaught of questions about everything from grass-fed liver anhydrate to cordyceps senesis to hidden benefits of beetroots, the detoxification properties of algae, whether it’s really true you can get all the benefits of blood doping without actually blood doping and more. So Craig came back to answer those questions in "Recovery For Aging Athletes, Cross-Patterning, A New Kind Of High Intensity Interval Training, An Oxygen Boosting Supplement Called “Oxcia” & More!", then appeared once again in an episode on "How To Legally Dope Your Blood". Today's Craig's back for a fifth time. He's taking on one of the hardest hikes in America, the Sierra High Route and doing it solo, in August. It's an off the grid, roughly 200 mile difficult hike at altitude, between 9,000 and 12,000ft, with huge elevation gain and loss every day, along with zero trails, navigating solely via map and compass. It's a quite serious and rough. In this episode, you'll hear: -Ben's new breakfast bone broth concoction he's been making in the mornings...5:00 -The difference between getting attacked by a black bear and grizzly bear...16:00 -What Craig is doing to prepare for his hike, and why it's better to go into an event 10% undertrained vs. 1% overtrained...24:00 -Whether you need to worry about the following ingredients in your supplements...44:00 1) Calcium Carbonate 2) Dicalcium Phosphate 3) Microcrystalline Cellulose 4) Stearic Acid 5) Croscarmellose Sodium 6) Silicon Dioxide 7) Pharmaceutical Glaze -The exercise machine that Lebron James and the rest of Hollywood swears by...59:00 -How to train your ankles without actually running downhill (and the one tendon to address if you have tight or injured ankles)...1:02:00 -And much more! Ep 983How To Get Started With Spearfishing and Why It's So Good For Fitness & Food: The Kimi Werner Podcast
The ocean has long been a source of sustenance, inspiration and adventure for Kimi Werner. And she is a big inspiration for me when it comes to my own love for water, freediving and spearfishing! Ep 982Tapping & EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique): Pseudoscience, Quackery or Wildly Effective Healing Modality?
Does tapping really work? Tapping (also known as EFT or "emotional freedom technique") is a practice in which you tap specific parts of your body and simultaneously say an affirmation. It is supposedly a wildly effective healing modality that combines ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. My guest on today's episode - Nicolas Ortner - created and produced the breakthrough documentary film “The Tapping Solution,” which followed ten people who used tapping to overcome significant challenges, including chronic back pain, fibromyalgia, insomnia, devastating grief and more. He has also authored multiple books on tapping, including The Tapping Solution. In today's show, I put Nick in the hotseat to explore whether or not tapping really works. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The fascinating history of tapping...9:40 -A short demonstration of tapping you can do on your own...15:50 -What if you just tap and don't do any affirmations, or vice versa...33:30 -The difference between tapping and acupuncture...38:30 -Who chooses which points are supposed to be tapped, and what happens if you "forget" a point...42:00 -Whether Nick's "style" of tapping is different than other styles, and if so, how...52:30 -How tapping would look for a chronic injury or nagging pain in a joint that won't go away....55:30 -How to tap for insomnia, high cortisol or stress...57:20 -And much more! News Flashes [00:08:20] Yet another fasting study suggests it’s not about the calorie restriction, but rather just the long periods of time without shoving food into your gaping maw. A ketogenic diet with adequate calories isn’t necessarily going to *add* slabs of muscle to your body, but you can at least *maintain* muscle WHILE decreasing body fat %. Appears it’s not glycogen depletion that makes a ketogenic diet reduce power production, but rather the acid ketones produce (meaning supplements like beta-alanine or sodium bicarbonate good choices for power keto athletes). And this has been happening since high school and I am 31 now. When it happens my friends tend to joke that I am trying to out lift my potential or that I am too weak to lift the weights at hand (which is not the case). I have read that it could be from dehydration but I drink a ton of water. Do you have any idea what might be causing this or a supplement that mi

Ep 981The New Darling Supplement Of The Anti-Aging Industry (& The Truth About Whether It Actually Works)
It's no secret that I inject myself with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). It's a bit spendy and a bit uncomfortable, but I do it. Nonetheless, some claim it's not necessary and that one can get all the NAD they need from supplementation. One such supplement that seems to be the current darling of the anti-aging industry is nicotinamide riboside (NR), and find out a bit more about it, I managed to get the discoverer of this "vitamin" on the show. His name is Dr. Charles Brenner. Dr. Brenner is the discoverer of nicotinamide riboside (NR) as a vitamin and a leading expert on NAD, which he calls "the central regulator of metabolism". Originally from Boston, he is a 1983 graduate of Wesleyan University, who worked in biotech for 5 years before conducting his PhD research in Cancer Biology in the Biochemistry Department of Stanford University. He subsequently performed his post-doctoral fellowship at Brandeis University before launching his independent career at Thomas Jefferson University. He moved to Dartmouth College in 2003, where he made the seminal discovery of the NR kinase pathway to NAD, and he was recruited to the University of Iowa in 2009 as the Roy J. Carver Chair and Head of Biochemistry. Dr. Brenner has been funded by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the March of Dimes, the Beckman Foundation, the Burroughs Wellcome Trust, the Lung Cancer Research Foundation, the Roy J. Carver Trust, the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, and has won a number of awards for his research and contributions to innovative education. For example, thanks to technologies that Dr. Brenner developed, it is now possible to determine how any disease or condition interacts the NAD metabolome, which is the set of genes and small molecules that comprise the NAD ecosystem. Dr. Brenner is a founding member of the ChromaDex Scientific Advisory Board and serves as their Chief Scientific Advisor. Since conducting the first clinical trial of nicotinamide riboside in healthy adults, he has continued to conduct research on mechanisms by which NR boosts metabolism and protects against diseases and conditions of metabolic stress in animals and to participate in the safe and evidence-based clinical development of NR. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Brenner enhances his own longevity and anti-aging protocol...8:45 -Why it's best to take NR supplements twice per day...11:00 -The seven specific ways that NAD can get damaged...17:30 -How you can test your own levels of NAD...32:30 -How Dr. Brenner discovered NR as a unique, new vitamin...37:15 -Why niacin in different than NR, and why niacin is not a good way to boost NAD...42:30 -The diseases and conditions that benefit from boosting NAD...48:00 -The connection between NAD, longevity and anti-aging...53:30 -Specific foods that you can eat to increase your NAD availability...1:03:15 -Dr. Brenner's opinion on intravenous NAD and injectable NAD...1:10:15 -Whether TruNiagen is different than any other forms of NR...1:19:30 -And much more! Ep 979How Embarrassing Gas, Bloating & Constipation Happens (& How To Get Rid Of It Forever)
For the millions, including me, that have had to deal with bloating and abdominal discomfort alone or accompanied by constipation, diarrhea or both, life can get pretty miserable. New research shows that the problems start with methane producing bacteria. Left untreated, these out-of-place bacteria feed off the foods you eat and create methane gas that leaves you bloated and uncomfortable. Dr. Ken Brown, today's guest, is an expert at how to permanently fix this issue. He received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical School, and completed his fellowship in gastroenterology in San Antonio, Texas. He is a board certified gastroenterologist and has been in practice for over 15 years with a clinical focus on inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Dr. Brown declares that his mission is to bridge the gap between medical and natural science. For over a decade he has been conducting clinical research for various pharmacologic companies. Dr. Brown recognized an unmet need for something natural that could help his IBS patients find real relief. After developing the only all-natural, clinically proven answer for IBS and bloating for over 6 years, ATRANTIL (ahh-tron-teel) launched in the summer of 2015. Dr. Brown developed Atrantil to help those suffering from the symptoms of IBS which we now know are caused by bacterial overgrowth. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why bloating occurs in the first place...10:00 -The very best test to determine the source of your bloating...18:00 -The mechanism by which polyphenol would get rid of bloating, and the fascinating action of "postbiotics"...24:00 -The South American herb "Quebracho", and how it can disrupt hydrogen production and kill archaebacteria in the gut...42:00 -How horse chestnut and peppermint work together to get rid of bloating and gas, and also to heal the gut...47:30 -Whether the three ingredients in Atrantil have been studied for efficacy in the gut...52:00 -The best way for people to get Atrantil, how long to take it, and after every meal...1:03:45 -And much more! Ep 977The Best Alternatives To Popping Pills: Injections, IV's, Nebulizers & Beyond - The Dr. Lauren Noel Podcast With Ben Greenfield
Dr. Lauren Noel is the founder of Shine Natural Medicine, and one of the few physicians in the world who has injected substances into my right butt cheek (something we discuss in today's episode). She was awarded her Bachelor Degree in psychology from Biola University in La Mirada, California. During her undergraduate studies, she worked in an acupuncture clinic and discovered the beauty of natural medicine. She also developed a passion for nutrition and began pursuing a career that viewed “food as medicine.” To convert this passion into a career, Dr. Noel completed a four-year graduate medical degree at the famed National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, Oregon. During her clinical years at NCNM, Dr. Noel interned at Outside In, a clinic that focuses on the health of at-risk youth and homeless teens. As a medical student, Dr. Noel was hand-picked as a member of the Presidential Ambassadors Leadership Society (PALS), and was a nominee of the Leadership Award and the prestigious Benedict Lust award. She completed a one-year internship in naturopathic/integrative cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine under the mentorship of Martin Milner, ND. Dr. Noel uses a unique, individualized approach with her patients. She views each patient as a whole person rather than a set of symptoms and diagnoses and uses a blend of naturopathic treatments including nutritional counseling, targeted supplementation, detoxification, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, intramuscular injections, and intravenous (IV) therapy. She welcomes men and women of all ages into her practice. Dr. Noel has a passion for teaching and takes her time to ensure that each patient fully understands her approach and the treatment plans. Dr. Noel has a passion for healthcare reform and has been active in legislation at the state and national level. She has been a weekly lecturer on the topic of “food as medicine” as well as a lecturer to conventional medical doctors. Her areas of expertise include digestive disorders, hormone imbalances, and autoimmune disease. Dr. Noel is the host of the popular radio show, “Dr. Lo Radio” which rates in the Top 10 Shows for Health on BlogTalkRadio and is a popular Podcast on iTunes and has attracted approximately 1 million listens. Ep 976Forsaking A Relentless Pursuit Of A Better Body: How To Find More Purpose & Meaning In "Fitnessing" & Make A Bigger Difference In The World.
Three years ago, I read two life-changing books that completely transformed the way that I think about my own purpose and meaning in life, and whether I'm truly making a difference in the world or whether I'm simply engaged in a relentless pursuit of "fitnessing" without actually making an impact in anyone's life. The books - titled "Unfinished" and "Hole In The Gospel" - were written by author Rich Stearns, the president of a company called World Vision - a global Christian humanitarian organization that partners with children, families, and their communities to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. Within just a few weeks of reading the books, my children and I had "adopted" a little girl from Ethiopia, who we send gifts and financial support to each month. We'd also begun volunteering more in our local community and doing a better job teaching others about the importance of purpose and passion in life, love and relationships, and belief in a higher power. These are all values I highlight in my article: "Five Quotes I Live By, Three Keys To Happiness, Two Questions To Ask Yourself & One Must-Do Thought Experiment." Now, when it comes to helping care for and support others and equipping others on this planet to experience a more fulfilling life, I'm about to take things to the next level. How? By supporting World Vision's bold initiative called the "THRIVE" Economic Empowerment program. THRIVE is based on the fact that millions of people in the most impoverished parts of the world are smallholder farmers who lack access to the knowledge, capital, markets, technology, and information they need to build thriving businesses. World Vision’s fully integrated, proven approach to economic empowerment is designed to equip these hardworking men and women to move from surviving to - you guessed it - thriving. Ultimately, this helps hardworking families break the cycle of extreme poverty for good. My guest on today's podcast, Christopher Shore, is the Chief Development Officer of this entire "THRIVE" Economic Empowerment program. Now in his 20th year with World Vision, Chris works on issues which contribute to the work of THRIVE – specifically building improved and resilient livelihoods for smallholder farmers. Chris began partnering with World Vision on microfinance issues while working for the Mennonite Economic Development Associates. He joined World Vision as National Director in Romania in 1997. He moved to California to lead World Vision’s microfinance and economic development work starting in 2001, and was largely focused on microfinance. Chris founded VisionFund International in 2003 and handed leadership to Scott Brown in 2006. That same year Chris turned his attention to the non-microfinance aspects of economic development, and began World Vision’s Natural Environment and Climate Issues group, which he led full-time starting in 2008. In 2011 Chris became one of the architects of Securing Africa’s Future in Tanzania – now THRIVE. In 2013 he led that work for East and West Africa, and in 2015 moved to World Vision USA. Chris is Canadian, lives in Southern California, is married to Dr. Susan Shore, and is father to Andrew and Katrina. He enjoys cycling, gardening, and woodworking. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The shocking concept of generational poverty and how a vicious cycle persists from generation to generation in many countries in Africa, from Tanzania to Rwanda and beyond...18:15 -How THRIVE shifts mindsets to an understanding that every person has great value, and possesses the power and responsibility to move from dependency to dignity...27:30 -The "bank" that THRIVE then helps each farmer to create in their local community to create end-to-end business of farming...31:45 -The importance of natural resource management and how THRIVE helps farmers manage their on-farm soil, vegetation, and water management, and to manage and rehabilitate forests, watersheds, and grasslands...41:40 -How THRIVE teaches emergency and situational awareness and teaches the farmers how to manage investments and risks and needs information to deal with shocks, emergencies, and change around them...52:00 -The way that hardworking farmers finally have the ability to consistently feed their children nutritious food; send them to school; cover bills for basic healthcare; build a house made of brick with a metal roof instead of mud, sticks, and straw; and reinvest in their businesses...57:00 -How you can support this entire program and even visit Africa to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and see the THRIVE initiative in action...1:04:30 -And much more! Ep 975The Ultimate Guide To Beating Chronic Fatigue With Specific Vitamins, Minerals, Biohacks & More - A Conversation With Dr. Sarah Myhill.
This month, I read two of the better books I've read lately on functional medicine, chronic fatigue and health concepts that it seems not many people are talking about these days. In other words, I folded over a lot of pages in these books! Both were written by the same author: Dr. Sarah Myhill. Doctor Sarah Myhill is a British doctor running her own specialist M.E. clinic in Knighton Wales, United Kingdom. Her website is an extensive resource of articles and information based on her treatment of patients, and runs to 920 webpages with over 6 million individual visits. Dr. Myhill's view is that the disease is characterised by a cellular metabolic mitochondrial dysfunction and has published several studies. Dr. Myhill has treated in excess of 10,000 CFS/ME sufferers over her 30 year career. The first book, "Sustainable Medicine: whistle-blowing on 21st century medical practice", is based on the premise that twenty-first century Western medicine—driven by vested interests—is failing to address the root causes of disease. Symptom-suppressing medication and “polypharmacy” have resulted in an escalation of disease and a system of so-called “health care,” which more closely resembles “disease care.” In this book, author Dr. Sarah Myhill aims to empower people to heal themselves by addressing the underlying causes of their illness. She presents a logical progression from identifying symptoms, to understanding the underlying mechanisms, to relevant interventions and tests and tools with which to tackle the root causes. She writes: “It’s all about asking the question ‘why?’” Sustainable Medicine covers a wide range of symptoms including inflammation (infection, allergy, autoimmunity), fatigue, pain, toxic symptoms, deficiency symptoms, and hormonal symptoms. And Dr. Myhill includes a toolbox of treatments for specific illnesses and ailments, as well as a general approach to avoiding and treating all disease. Finally, she offers a series of case histories to show how people have successfully taken control of their health and healed even in the face of the most discouraging symptoms—all without the harmful interventions of 21st century Western medicine. The second book, "Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalitis " is just as good. In this book, details the practical application of her successful and comprehensive treatment approach for CFS/ME. Key chapters include: -The clinical picture of CFS: CFS symptoms list, medical tests for chronic fatigue -Mitochondria and chronic fatigue syndrome: energy powerhouse, mitochondrial failure, implications for major organs, vital tests -Treating mitochondrial failure -Foundations for recovery - the Dr Myhill CFS protocol with tips for CFS help: rest and pacing, vitamins and minerals, Vegepa for CFS, sleep, diet, allergies, digestion, detoxification & antioxidants -Related health issues: avoiding viral infections, hormonal disturbances in CFS, the contraceptive pill and HRT, oxygen supply, psychological aspects of CFS, the right exercise -Toxic and viral causes of CFS: chemical poisoning, chronic infections, pain -Practical CFS help: where to start (rest, nutritional supplements, Vegepa for ME, sleep, stone age diet, treating mitochondrial dysfunction, correcting hormones, detoxing, avoiding infections) During our discussion, you'll discover: -Dr. Myhill's overall philosophy of medicine...6:45 -How Dr. Myhill tests mitochondrial function, and why she feels it's so important...15:30 -What is myalgic encephalitis and how is it any different from chronic fatigue syndrome...21:10 -Why Dr. Myhill uses a fat biopsy to test for detoxification...23:30 -Dr. Myhill's infatuation with Vitamin C and how she uses it to treat chronic fatigue...26:30 -Why Dr. Myhill administers a lot of intravenous magnesium to her patients...33:00 -The fascinating link between the fermenting gut and chronic fatigue...40:15 -What allergic muscles are, and how they are linked to fibromyalgia...51:00 -At the very end of the book, Dr. Myhill has a recipe for live cultures, and why she's not a fan of probiotics...52:00 -Dr. Myhill's recipe for linseed-Paleo-ketogenic bread...54:00 -Why Dr. Myhill focuses on the acid-alkali balance...56:00 -And much more! Ep 974The Brave Athlete: Calm the F*ck Down and Rise to the Occasion
It's high time to dig into another one of the dog-eared books on my shelf - one of those titles that I folded over, highlighted and scribbled in profusely. The book, entitled, "The Brave Athlete: Calm the F*ck Down and Rise to the Occasion", claims to solve the 13 most common mental conundrums athletes face in their everyday training and in races. It's based on the idea that you don’t have one brain - you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the civilized world, and your Computer brain that runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for control all the time and that’s when bad things happen; you get crazy nervous before a race, you choke under pressure, you quit when the going gets tough, you make dumb mistakes, you worry about how you look. What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you don’t want? What if you could feel confident, suffer like a hero, and handle any stress? According to today's podcast guests and the authors of the book - Dr. Simon Marshall and Lesley Paterson - you can indeed take control of your brain so you can train harder, race faster, and better enjoy your sport. Dr. Simon Marshall trains the brains of endurance athletes and fitness enthusiasts to become happier and more mentally tough. He is former Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego and Professor of Exercise Science at San Diego State University where he was Director of the Graduate Program in Sport & Exercise Psychology. He has published over 100 scientific articles on the psychology of exercise and has been cited in the scientific literature over 10,000 times. He has served as invited expert on exercise science for the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Cancer Society. He is currently the Performance Psychologist for the BMC Racing team, an elite WorldTour professional cycling team. As the sherpa-husband of professional triathlete Lesley Paterson, he is the founding member of Team S.H.I.T. (Supportive Husbands in Training), and competes in triathlon or cycling events as the husband of Lesley Paterson. Lesley Paterson is a professional mountain biker, 3-time world champion in off-road triathlon, an Ironman® triathlon champion, endurance coach, and foul-mouthed Scots lassie. Growing up in Scotland, Lesley was the only girl on an all-boys rugby team, which is where she nurtured her love of dirt and dirty words. Banned from the team when puberty struck, she took up cross-country running and triathlon and was soon winning national titles and competing internationally. Lesley founded Braveheart Coaching to train and inspire endurance athletes to compete with passion, toughness, and an unwavering “Braveheart” spirit in overcoming obstacles. Paterson is a trained actress, a screenwriter, and personal trainer to Hollywood actors. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What made Simon and Lesley work on this book together as a dual process...8:45 -What an athletic identity is, and how to form a strong one...12:45 -How to use a self-schema process to build your identity and avoid a damaging "identity mismatch"...20:45 -Why an alter-ego for yourself is one of the most powerful things you can do to form an athletic identity...38:00 -Why rituals seem less and less common in an era of "holding your smartphone for a selfie" before the race...42:30 -Simon and Lesley's best of the best advice for getting through an injury...50:45 -Simon and Lesley's tips for getting outside your comfort zones...1:01:45 -A thumb tapping exercise for increasing your tolerance to pain and getting outside your comfort zone...1:10:15 -And much more! Ep 970How To Use Your Mind To Heal Your Body, Imagination For Healing, Defying Death, Embracing Immortality & Much More With Dr. Gerald Epstein.
After I published the podcast Should Christians Do Yoga? How To Combine Energy Medicine & Religion, Flat Earth Christianity, Transcendental Meditation, Anti-Aging & More With Pastor Toby Sumpter, one of my Jewish friends reached out to me and said: "The Christians and Yoga podcast was interesting, if you are interested in the Jewish take on that - I have summarized it below as succinctly as possible: 1. Jews believe in 5 levels of the soul. Nefesh is the lowest level and is as the Bible says resides in the blood - which while meridians don't travel exactly along with the blood, this is clearly described as an energy in the body and is consistent with chi. The second level is Ruach and means wind - there are different aspects of chi that are consistent with both of these descriptions. Above this level is when you talk about breath of life stuff in the interview, be aware that the 3rd level is called Neshama which means breath and is higher in the cause and effect ladder extending to the Divine. We believe the highest level actually resides in God. 2. Many Jews including myself believe that many of the traditions of the east originated with Abraham, it says in Genesis that he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them to the east. Most mystics believe those became the teachings of the east. Those teachings were occult in nature and some of course have degenerated into idolatry. 3. The prophets were adept meditators with remarkable meditative techniques. What many don't know is that there were schools of the prophets, most didn't just wake up and start prophesying, they studied in academy's where complex techniques using music, chanting, and certain postures were employed. 4. Hatha yoga as is commonly known is so far removed from its origins that it has essentially become sanitized in its reference to religion and so for Jews it would be ok. Chanting one needs to be careful of and the words meaning should be investigated carefully. "Om" is problematic if it is chanted in its traditional form in Hinduism which would violate the 2nd commandment. IMHO, kundalini separated from its own spiritual teachings without a qualified teacher of the tradition is dangerous and with them while deep and holding many truths are not consistent with the Bible. 5. There is debate in Jewish circles about Reiki since symbols are used but most who know the origin of those symbols say there is nothing that would contradict the Bible. 6. Masters of qi for example can help heal people of various things, this isn't spiritual though, most see it as a valid branch of medicine and so it's not uncommon for TCM doctors to have nice practices in orthodox jewish communities. 7. All the above being said - each treatment, technique, workout, and meal should be linked to God if we are to be biblical minded people. It is why Jew's say a blessing before everything - to make sure we do so with the proper intention. 8. One needs to be conscious of Matthew's saying about not serving 2 masters. Most don't realize that it echoes the 7th commandment as we believe that along with the common belief of what adultery is, it also means dilution, weakening, or mixing of any pure relationship. As my teacher Gerald Epstein, MD reminds me often health, healing, and holiness come from the same root. If it is all about tangible physical healing one can usually make the distinction fairly easily but all of these paths can, if you wish, lead to more ethereal and spiritual experiences, it is at these levels, one needs to honor the spiritual path you are on, be discerning, and not to have another Master." He then went on to introduce me to Dr. Gerald Epstein, his teacher and said that he had used Dr. Epstein's teachings and techniques in his medical practice, where he has seen it shrink metastatic tumors that should have killed his patients years ago. He then proceeded to connect me with Dr. Epstein, who is the guest on today's podcast. Gerald Epstein, M.D., has been a pioneer in the use of mental imagery for treating physical and emotional problems. With more that 40 years of training in the mind, he is a leading proponent of the Western spiritual tradition and its application to healing and therapeutics. Dr. Epstein maintains a private practice in New York City and is a clinical professor of psychiatry at New York's Mt. Sinai Medical Center. He has lectured and taught worldwide. He founded and directs the American Institute for Mental Imagery (AIMI). As a NYS Regents Chartered School, AIMI offers courses to the general public in healing and the western spiritual path as well certificate programs for licensed mental health professionals. He is a recipient of a National Institutes of Health Grant in Alternative Medicine to research the effects of mental imagery in the treatment of bronchial asthma. He has authored several mental imagery classic books and cds including: Healing Visualizations: Creating Health Through Imagery, Healing Into Immortality, The Pho

Ep 969The Intriguing Science Of Building Biology (Along With A Complete Analysis & Surprising Results From Ben Greenfield's So-Called "Biohacked Home")
I recently hired certified building biologist Brian Hoyer to do a full day "dirty electricity" and biological health analysis of my entire "biohacked home" in Spokane, WA (the same home I write about in this book), and he found some pretty shocking and surprising issues. For example... ...when I'm inside my low EMF infrared sauna (which we tested and found was indeed low EMF), my body is getting exposed to cell tower transmissions and radio waves and being "as an antenna" to propagate those waves (we discuss solutions in the episode)... ...the master bedroom of my house is actually located over a geothermal stressor area (which causes large amounts of magnetic field exposure) and the mattress itself is propagating and magnifying this electromagnetic signal, and there are hefty amounts of radio and cell phone tower signals pouring in through the bedroom walls... ...my twin boys are being exposed to nearly twice this amount of electrical stress in their bedroom due in part to their pet dragon lizard lighting and elaborate "Christmas tree" lighting they've decorated their room with... ...my office is mostly protected - thanks in part to the dirty electricity filters I have spread throughout the office - but my so-called "biologically friendly" LED lighting is producing a heavy amount of flicker that is nothing like that of the sun... ...my Molekule air filter had an intense WiFi/Bluetooth signal emitting from it even in sleep mode. Brian disabled it. He actually owns one of these filters too and didn't realize I had one until he investigated and located the WiFi/Bluetooth source with his RF meter. ...my home security system gives off 12 RF/WiFi pulses every time the doors shut or open... ...the dish on the east side of my house is broadcasting WiFi (despite my home not having a WiFi router enabled), leading Brian to recommend putting the dish further from the house and running the cable underground and up through the wall at the same location, or mounting a metal box around it to block the signal from coming toward your home... ...there are four cell phone antennas located within a mile from me... -Ptera antenna 1 3.650 GHZ -Ptera antenna 2 3.650 GHZ -Ptera antenna 3 3.650 GHZ -Ptera antenna 4 3.650 GHZ ...and another four with higher frequencies within three miles from me... -Ptera 18 antennas transmitting at 11 GHZ to 19 GHZ -Ptera 29 antennas transmitting at 11 GHZ to 18 GHZ -T-mobile 8 antennas at 21.8 GHZ and 1 at 19 GHZ -T-mobile 10 antennas at 19 GHZ ...and there are hundreds more transmitting all around my "isolated" home in the forest. Just imagine what it's like in a city or more urban area! Brian's meter only detects up to 8 GHZ, and he doesn't know for sure where those higher frequency cell phone signals are aimed. 5G technology is going to use frequencies up to 100 GHZ, which sounds horrible but, in reality, after about 30 GHZ the waves have a much hard time penetrating solid objects. Up to 30 GHZ, however, can penetrate if there is enough power behind it, and cell phone companies have to ramp up the power going up to 30 GHZ in order to push through solid objects. This is why 5G networks will have to use the higher frequencies in conjunction with the lower ones. When it comes to shielding effectiveness against these issues, Brian highly recommended this article In the podcast, Brian also speaks about another 5G test study. See, the Telecom industry has done many tests to see what the barriers are to the networks working well that they plan to install. These are perfect to look at because technically you'd want to build or outfit your home from these materials. It also gives a good idea on how well the shielding paint will hold up against the higher 5G frequencies. Brian is convinced that the layers of T98 shield paint we discuss in this show will 5G proof my home since the third party test reports on the paint show this - as do the Telecom industry's own studies on materials that attenuate the higher 5G transmissions. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The background behind the ancestral health movement and how it inspired Brian's work... 9:00 -The equipment Brian is using to examine my house... 11:00 Goss Meter. Gigahertz Solutions NFA 30M. HF Digit Meter by Geovital Protect 1207-I NFEM Digit Meter Field Probe -Why we should avoid exposure to both dirty and clean electricity... 18:30 -Inside my gym, mostly the sauna... 22:00 Measuring radio frequencies. My body was being used as a radio antenna!!! Measuring electric fields being generated. -My Office...41:00 Measuring the magnetic fields with a NFA 30M Lights are producing a lot of "flicker." Incandescent bulbs don't have "flicker." Looking for devices with Bluetooth capabilities and wifi (spy meter). Ep 968How To Go On A Vision Quest & Embark Upon A Rite Of Passage.
I first met Tim Corcoran when I was looking for a local plant expert to teach me more about wild plant foraging. Not only did he come to my house to record this podcast episode, but we also shot a host of videos in which he taught me and my boys how to harvest plants from our land such as wild nettle, mullein, comfrey, oregon grape root, wild mint and beyond. This guy is a true wealth of wilderness knowledge. As a matter of fact, each year I send my children to attend his wilderness survival camp and also his winter adventure camp. Tim himself is a heart centered father of two brilliant boys and husband to a magnificent wife. Recently, I was talking to Tim about the concept of vision quests and rites of passage - for both youth and adults alike, and he told me about a new program he is creating to achieve just that - a program based on a concept he calls "Purpose Mountain". Tim is the founder of Purpose Mountain, where he offers Nature Based Purpose Guidance to support people with a love for wild nature who feel a deep yearning and a burning desire to discover their purpose, as well as work with resistance and fears through the Ecology of Self and Voice Dialogue. Tim also serves as co-Director of Twin Eagles Wilderness School, an organization he co-founded with his wife, Jeannine Tidwell, in Sandpoint, Idaho in 2005 dedicated to facilitating deep nature connection mentoring, cultural restoration, and inner tracking. Tim is a leader of men’s groups, holistic rites of passage for boys, and wilderness quests, guiding and initiating men and boys into the new paradigm of the mature masculine. Since 1999, Tim has dedicated his life towards consciously furthering this vision of living in balance with the Earth, community, family, and self. Healing the cultural rift between the mainstream and indigenous cultures, transformational consciousness work, the spiritual journey, ancestral work, deep nature connection, family and health are all deep commitments in his life. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why men and women these days suffer from lack of a proper transition from childhood into adulthood...10:00 -Ancestral societies that have a rite of passage, such as the Australian aborigine walkabout...12:00 -The difference between a vision quest and a rite of passage...17:45 -The right age to embark upon a rite of passage, and why adults should also do a rite of passage...23:00 -Tim's story of how a moose nearly killed him during his rite of passage but eventually became part of his growing experience...44:30 -What a rite of passage actually looks like for a boy vs. a man...55:30 -Why Tim refers to his rite of passage as "Purpose Mountain"...1:09:00 -And much more! Ep 967Barefoot Strong: Unlock the Secrets to Movement Longevity.
As one of the fastest growing areas within medicine, the anti-aging business is now a $122 billion dollar industry with researchers dedicating their careers to finding the fountain of youth. Whether it be copper peptides or acai supplements, most of the anti-aging industry focuses on limited aspects of eternal youth and vitality. But my guest on today's podcast believes it is time to apply the latest research into a new area of anti-aging medicine she calls "movement longevity". In her new book Barefoot Strong: Unlock the Secrets to Movement Longevity, Podiatrist & Human Movement Specialist Dr. Emily Splichal explores the science behind barefoot training and how this often overlooked area of health and fitness is actually the secret to youthful movement. As an internationally-renown educator on barefoot training, Dr. Emily has traveled the world exploring the concept of movement efficiency from the ground up. Through barefoot science, fascial fitness and neuromuscular conditioning, she will show you how to survive the unnatural conditions of today’s shod society and optimize your movement patterns. From barefoot activation exercises, to vitamin supplements to protect your peripheral nerves, Barefoot Strong is a go-to guide to ensure years of efficient movement – one step at a time. As a Podiatrist, Human Movement Specialist and Global Leader in Barefoot Science and Rehabilitation, Dr. Splichal has developed a keen eye for movement dysfunction and neuromuscular control during gait. Functional and Regenerative Medicine and the role of anti-aging science as it relates to movement longevity is where Dr Splichal's passion is focused and has led to her notoriety within Podiatry. Ep 966How To Test Your Nutritional Status & How To Know Which Supplements To Take: The Ultimate Cheat Sheet
Dr. Chris Masterjohn is a former podcast guest from the episode “Why Sugar Isn’t As Dangerous As You Might Think, How Your Genetics Affect Your Sleep, Liver Toxicity & More With Dr. Chris Masterjohn.” and "What Happens If You Take Too Much Creatine, A Notorious Deficiency On High-Protein Diets, How To Become A Nutrition Ninja & More With Chris Masterjohn." He earned his PhD in Nutritional Sciences in 2012 from the University of Connecticut at Storrs, served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2012 to 2014, and served as Assistant Professor of Health and Nutrition Sciences at Brooklyn College from 2014 to 2016. He now works independently in health and nutrition research, education, and consulting. Chris has authored or co-authored ten peer-reviewed publications. Chris just put the finishing touches on his Testing Nutritional Status: The Ultimate Cheat Sheet e-book, which distills all of the practical information from the confusing nutrition supplement industry and packs everything you need to know about testing and customizing your supplement regimen all into one, single document. So you never need an appointment with Dr. Google. You never need to rummage through long articles, podcast transcripts, or endless lists of links. The Cheat Sheet is published as a PDF, Kindle book, and iBook. This allows you to use your favorite devices and apps to read it in your favorite way. It means you can read it on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or mobile phone. It is threaded with links throughout. This makes finding exactly what you need always just one click away. All of the lab testing required for comprehensive nutritional screening is reduced to a single page, with hyperlinks making ordering any of the tests just one click away. In just five pages, Chris provides full instructions for lab testing, blood pressure, and dietary analysis, as well as an algorithm for quick decisions on what to do next for each marker that may be off. Over 70 pages list the signs and symptoms associated with all the possible nutrient imbalances, the potential causes of nutrient imbalances, and an action plan for correcting each imbalance. To top it off, it ends with an index of the signs and symptoms of nutrient deficiencies and imbalances. The index has 178 entries, and each entry links directly to the sections of the text where those signs and symptoms are discussed. This makes it incredibly easy to browse through the index for the things that seem most interesting or relevant to you and find exactly what you’re looking for without having to read the whole guide. During my discussion with Chris about how to test your nutritional status, you'll discover: -Why you need to care about supplements, even if you're eating a good diet... 9:45 -Whether nutritional testing is too expensive to justify... 22:00 -Three different ways to know if you have nutritional deficiencies... 33:00 -Whether someone should really do this on their own vs. asking their doctor what’s best...44:00 -How you can test for fat soluble vitamins, and why someone would be low in fat soluble vitamins...50:00 -How you can test for oxidative stress and what antioxidants are people commonly deficient in...59:00 -Why Chris says "I do not recommend high-fat ketogenic diets unless there is a demonstrated medical purpose for this diet or trial and error has proven it useful to increase well being or resolve health problems that have not been resolvable through other means"...1:07:30 -What Chris' diet looks like, and why he doesn't consume casein protein...1:11:00 -And much more!
